Dublin has twice been named a top seven Intelligent Community, and more honors are coming next month when a city staffer receives honors from the Intelligent Community Forum.

Because many of the ramps being built in the first phase are new, traffic will be maintained on the current cloverleaf configurations, ODOT Planning and Engineering Administrator Thomas Slack told council.

But it won’t mean zero closures.

“We could have closures of 15 to 30 days or just overnight,” Slack said.

Construction of the first phase is expected to take two years and start in 2014.

The improvements planned include adding four lanes of traffic each way from the inter-

change to the Avery-Muirfield exit.

I-270 south to U.S. 33 west will have a new two-ramp exit, but traffic heading south on I270 will continue to use the current ramp to go east into Historic Dublin.

Heading east on U.S. Route 33 to I-270 is expected to get easier as two ramps will be built to ferry traffic north and south.

The two lane ramp will split, with one leg headed south on I-270 and another going over I270 and then under U.S. Route 33 to merge with traffic headed north on I-270.

Traffic headed west on U.S. Route 33 will use a new ramp to go north on I-270 and will

no longer have to battle cars leaving I-270.

Vehicles that want to get on southbound I-270 from U.S. Route 33 eastbound will follow a new ramp under U.S. Route 33, over I-270 and merge with southbound traffic.

“Phase one handles immediate problems,” Slack said, adding the solution is both innovative and cost-effective.

The solution will alleviate weaving at the ramps, he said.

With construction expected to cost $77 million, $7.5 million will also be needed for rightof-way acquisition as well as funding for engineering.

A traffic signal is planned on U.S. Route 33 between the interchange and Frantz Road for traffic getting off I-270 northbound.

Construction of the second phase is expected to cost $25 million along with $500,000 for right-of-way acquisition.

While ODOT is working on obtaining funding for the project, Dublin has already committed $17.25 million.

Ahmed said the funding and help from Dublin staff has been helpful and is not often seen.

“There’s a great partnership between ODOT and the city of Dublin,” he said. “I wish we had more partnerships like that.”

Dublin Irish Festival

City keeping tabs on alcohol serving, consumption

Guinness will be on tap at this year’s Dublin Irish Festival for the first time, but visitors shouldn’t celebrate too much.

Even though several Dublin City Council members voiced concerns about underage drinking and alcohol abuse at the annual festival, they approved Killian’s Irish Red and Guinness as sponsors.

Although a Dublin Irish Festival Stout has been offered at previous festivals, the Aug. 2-4 event will be the first time Guinness has been offered in the 26 years of the festival.

Council members were happy to have the new offering on tap, but things were a little foamy when it came to behavior seen at previous festivals.

Cathy Boring said underage drinking was her primary concern and Mayor Tim Lecklider said he’s seen inebriated people who should not have been served more alcohol at the festival.

Vice Mayor Amy Salay said the festival has a good record of not serving alcohol to those under age, but they can drink before the festival.

“The issue is drinking offsite and folks over consuming,” she said.

“We make sure servers do not over

serve,” Police Chief Heinz von Eckartsberg said, noting that sometimes someone else will buy a round for someone who has had enough.

Sneaking alcohol into the festival has also been a problem.

Gates have bag checkers to ferret out alcohol, but sometimes it still makes it onto festival grounds.

“For a festival this size we have very few issues,” von Eckartsberg told council.

“It is a well-run event,” Councilman John Reiner agreed.

Arrests have increased over the past few years at the Dublin Irish Festival.

In 2010, there were five adult

arrests and four were alcohol related.

One juvenile arrest in 2010 was alcohol related, said information from the city.

Alcohol-related arrests for adults in 2011 decreased to three, while alcohol-related juvenile arrests increased to four.

Last year, police arrested 13 adults and 12 were alcohol related. Only two alcohol-related juvenile arrested were made in 2012.

To stop alcohol-related incidents, von Eckartsberg said volunteers will use Operation 21 to make sure no one underage is served.

“This program provides civilian personnel, trained by the police divi-

sion, who patrol the festival grounds watching for signs of underage alcohol possession and/or consumption,” a memo to council from von Eckartsberg said.

“Beginning this year, we will enhance this capability by utilizing our Citizen Police Academy alumni to us with these efforts.”

Dublin Events Manager Alison LeRoy said the festival will also work to start engaging kids in middle school and keep them involved through high school and out of trouble.

Staff is looking into different options such as music or a virtual graffiti wall.

Sawmill and Hard roads

Dublin, Columbus cooperate to buy rights of way

Dublin will work with Columbus on improvements in the Sawmill and Hard Road area.

Dublin has been planning improvements at the Sawmill and Hard roads intersection and will time the work with the final phase of Columbus’ improvements to Hard Road between Smokey Row and Sawmill Road.

Dublin City Council members last week approved an agreement to work with Columbus on right-of-way acquisition.

Both entities need property from the same owners and will work together on getting land for the projects.

“We thought it made sense to bring both projects together,” Dublin City Engineer Paul Hammersmith said.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2015, Hammersmith said.

Although the majority of the intersection is in Columbus, Dublin has been planning the project for a few years, because Columbus had no plans for improvements there, Hammersmith said.

Developments within Dublin also generated a lot of the traffic there, he added.

“What caused the improvement of the intersection is the development of Lifetime Fitness and the Kroger Center,” Hammersmith said, noting that both businesses have contributed to a fund that will help pay for the improvements.

Council members Michael Keenan, Cathy Boring and Mayor Tim Lecklider, however, questioned spending money to improve an intersection that is not in Dublin.

Marilee Chinnici-Zuercher said Dublin often gets stuck paying the larger share when it works with other jurisdictions, but the intersection does serve Scioto High School.

Once Emerald Parkway is completed, it will also generate traffic at the intersection, she added.

“It concerns me,” Chinnici-Zuercher said. “I don’t see relationships going in both directions.”

Lecklider also cited concerns over fixing the intersection when traffic buildups are seen at the Sawmill Road exit from Interstate 270. Traffic headed north toward Hard Road often backs up, he said.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has been looking at ways to improve the exit, Hammersmith said, and is considering widening Sawmill north of the exit.

“There is no time frame, but they’re trying to move it along,” he said.

Other improvements could come to the Hard Road area this summer.

Council members last week approved the donation of land from Washington Township for two different projects.

Land at the corner of Riverside Drive and Hard Road was donated so Dublin could install a right-turn lane at Hard Road. The project is expected to be done this summer.

WashingtonTownship also donated land for part of a sharedused path that will be constructed on the south side of Brand Road between Muirfield Drive and Earlington Parkway.

Public officials’ actions prompt head-scratching

The Boston tragedy held us in thrall for a week, dramatically resolving in a manner encompassing the best of any television who-done-it.

During the same period, actions of both Ohio legislators and our national Congress left much to be ashamed of. Our General Assembly received a budget from the governor denying promised funding to a third of our school districts, then introduced legislation to disenfranchise women’s reproductive rights and refuse health exchange funding made possible

by Obamacare, seemingly wanting to put $400 million of Ohio’s own tax monies into Medicaid, rather than receive federal help amounting to $13 billion.

On the national level, the entire carefully worked out gunbuyer background check compromise was eviscerated.

Both federal and state actions seemed prompted mainly by dislike of the president.A majority vote would have passed the background checks in the Senate, but the supermajority need for 60 votes, fell six short. Even with the latest polls showing 90 percent of the population in favor, including 85 percent of gun owners, political courage fell short – very short.

Needless to say, our junior senator, Rob Portman, voted with his party against the need for background checks, apparently buying the timeworn excuse this might lead to gun registration, which was expressly forbidden in the bill.

Since we effectively register every car sold in this country, require training in how to use them, plus a license to drive, I fail to see this as a problem.

I applauded Mr. Portman’s decision to make public his son’s homosexuality, and certainly approve of Mr. Kasich’s desire to take federal funding, neither a decision that was taken lightly.

Now we see a “right to work” bill introduced in the Ohio legislature, after a similar one was resoundingly defeated in 2011.

Presumed gubernatorial candidate Ed Fitzgerald has already pointed out that in other states without worker representation, earnings average is $6,500 dollars below that of Ohio. The move toward more sales tax in order to abolish the income tax is mistaken; any economist in his administration will explain the difference between regressive and progressive taxes, if the governor asks.

Never would I call the now existing health care law perfect, but something like this has been needed and called for at least since World War II days. Instead

of unanimous rejection, why was Republican leadership not working to make it better?

I was delighted to BILL see Watterson alumni rise up MCNUTT in wrath at the administrative decision to fire a 19 year tenured teacher because she has a same-sex partner. At least younger church members are coming more progressive, unlike the leaders of their church. Two-thirds of church members do not oppose same sex partnerships, and would allow them to marry, while almost 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies who provide health insurance provide reproductive health coverage.

Conspicuously absent are church hospitals and educational institutions that refuse to allow such health care provision.

Best estimate is this type of health coverage is now self-paid by a supermajority of female church members who work in these institutions. I doubt even the Curia in their Vatican headquarters can find any Biblical sanction of such action, except possibly the writings of St. Paul about the general inferiority of women, probably as valid as the mandate for clerical celibacy in order to emulate the single state of Jesus, who appeared to dignify women rather than treat them as subordinates.

I have a good friend, a very much lapsed Catholic, who blogs that allowing married men to be priests would fill the seminaries now so in need of students. Whether this was because of a true vocation or a desire to leave home, he did not say.

Bishop Campbell’s recent statement equating “immoral behavior” with a lesbian relationship skates perilously close to church doctrine being interpreted as replacing secularrelated legislation that forbids such action, not to mention the constitutional call for separation of church and state (render to Caesar and to God that which belongs to each).

I note that Ms. Hale is Methodist, and those of us in that denomination have our own battles to fight. We have not, and show few signs of adapting our own church to modern times, at least as regards the sinfulness or lack of it in enrolling members or staff who profess such a life style.

Memorial Day shapes up as family day

It was a pleasant sunny day on Friday, May 30, 1913, and most of Columbus took the day off to celebrate Memorial Day for the 47th time. Originally held to remember the sacrifice of Union Army soldiers in the American Civil War, the holiday with the passage of time became an opportunity to remember all of the people who had provided military service to their country.

Often called Decoration Day, the holiday was observed with a parade through downtown Columbus which ended with parade participants and observers alike taking streetcars to Green Lawn and Mt. Calvary cemeteries. In the days before Memorial Day, the school children of Columbus had collected an immense quantity of peonies, early roses and other flowers. Gathered into more than 3,000 bouquets, the flowers were placed with a flag on the grave of every veteran in the two cemeteries. By the time the streetcars full of people arrived for memorial services, the veterans’ sections of both cemeteries resembled large gardens of flowers and flags.

After the services at the cemetery, most people returned to downtown Columbus and arrived just in time to witness the latest addition to Memorial Day. At twelve noon, the church bells of Columbus rang for five full minutes. With businesses, schools and public offices closed for the day, the residents of Columbus had several different options at their disposal to conclude the holiday. For many veterans and their families, the memorial aspect of the day continued with afternoon programs and exercises at Memorial Hall, Franklin Park and Union Cemetery.

For other people, Memorial Day was increasingly becoming not so much a commemorative event as a simple vacation day from work or school. Downtown restaurants and theaters were open and did a brisk business with both afternoon and evening offerings. The great amusement parks – Olentangy and Indianola – were open as well with a new season of swimming, boating and other diversions beginning on Memorial Day. The amusement parks were in some sense a response to a change in how people got around the city. Columbus had had streetcars on its streets since 1863.

But they were horse drawn, hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The electrified streetcar changed all of that. Now streetcars could be heated in the winter and move fast enough to make their own breeze in the summer. The arches that carried power to the cars gave the city its nickname – the Arch City. And the speed and inexpensiveness of the cars led directly to the rise of “streetcar suburbs” some distance from downtown.

But the success of the streetcar company was limited. People rode them in the morning and evening back and forth to work. The cars were not used all that much at other times. To remedy the problem, the streetcar company sponsored the construction of attractive and alluring amusement parks at the end of the streetcar lines.

The strategy worked and both the street car company and the amusement parks prospered.

Columbus of a century ago, Memorial Day was becoming a more private family holiday.

Increasingly people visited local cemeteries and placed flowers on the graves of family members whether they were veterans or not. Following a visit to the cemetery, family reunions at home took place all across the city.

A flag was displayed and the family gathered on the porch as the afternoon moved toward evening.

Columbus was a city of spacious porches in those days. And on Memorial Day the porches were filled with people.

As the daylight faded, younger folks might travel to an amusement park or a theater.

But for most of Columbus, a perfect Memorial Day ended where it began – at home.

A new research and development facility will locate in Jerome Township, bringing 77 new jobs to the area. G-Tekt North American Corp. announced last week it will invest $28.6 million in the central Ohio area as it brings manufacturing to West Jefferson and a research and development facility to Jerome Township.

The new Jerome Township facility will develop, design and work with G-Tekt’s other North American facilities on the introduction

and improvement of projects for the U.S. market, a news release from Columbus 2020 said.

“The Columbus Region rose to the top of our location search because of its strategic proximity to automotive companies like Honda, and convenient access to a skilled workforce fit to staff our manufacturing and R&D operations,” Toshitsugu Kikuchi, president of G-Tekt Corp., said in the release.

The G-Tekt Corp. is headquartered in Japan and the company makes auto body frame parts, dies and welding equipment. The company has six North American facilities.

Dublin Vintage Bike Night scheduled June 3

Dublin Vintage Bike Night will continue June 3 in Historic Dublin with a gift for the first 100 riders.

The new event, held the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. by the Dublin Village Tavern, 27 S. High St., will offer free Vintage Bike Night T-shirts to the first 100 riders.

Organizer David Call said a lot of buzz has been generated over the new Historic Dublin event. It aims to bring vintage motorcycle owners

together each month. The May event drew 30 to 35 riders despite rain, he said.

“I’ve gotten awesome response,” he said.

The Dean Insurance Group in Historic Dublin offered to sponsor T-shirts for the new group, Call said.

June 15 run/walk helps fund memorial scholarships

About 50 scholarships have been given out in the name of two Dublin Scioto High School students who died in a car accident in 2009.

The Lyndsey and Kyle 5K that raises funds for the Lyndsey Rice and Kyle Colello Memorial Scholarship Funds is slated for June 15 at Scioto High School, 4000 Hard Road.

Kyle’s mother, Holly Colello said it’s nice to return to a place where her son spent so much time.

“We’re all very grateful that Scioto will let us have the race beginning and ending at their school and the city of Dublin for helping us make it a successful day,” she said. “The kids went to school there and spent so much of their time there, so it’s nice to go back.”

Lyndsey was a 15-year-old sophomore when she died in the Nov. 28, 2009 accident.

The youngest of seven children, Lyndsey was a varsity football and basketball cheerleader, a member of the track team and was very involved in her church.

“Lyndsey was such a sweetheart,” said her mother Joanie Rice. “I wish everyone had known her.”

At a glance The Lyndsey and Kyle 5K will start at 9 a.m. June 15, with registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. at Scioto High School, 4000 Hard Road. People can walk or run on the course.

Kyle, the oldest of two boys, was a senior at Scioto who enjoyed football, lacrosse, snowboarding and paintball. He was also very involved in his church and wanted to become a mechanical engineer.

The annual 5K offers an opportunity to see friends of Kyle and Lyndsey and supportive community members.

“It’s wonderful to see their friends and all the different families that come out,” Colello said.

“To see the race get bigger and better each year and it see it help get other kids through college is the best part,” she said.

Both current and former Scioto students participate and Colello said last year 450 were in attendance.

“A lot of their friends still come if they’re able to,” Rice said. “They’ve been very good and very supportive ... .They’ll never forget Lyndsey.”

The 5K benefits scholarships awarded

to Scioto seniors each year. Between both funds, Rice estimated about 50 have been given out in the past four years.

“What we look for is a student who works hard, is involved in their school and involved in sports,” Colello said.

“They have to play sports two years,” she said. “They also need to be involved in faith and show a different random act of kindness they’ve done throughout the year.”

Rice said the scholarship that honors Lyndsey is more character based.

“We’re looking for somebody who is a friend,” she said.

“Family is important (and) school, community and church,” Rice said. “Lyndsey gave to all that.”

The Lyndsey and Kyle 5K will start at 9 a.m. June 15, with registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. at Scioto High School, 4000 Hard Road. People can walk or run on the course.

A one-mile memory walk is set for 9:05 a.m.

Local musicians hope their jingle wins contest

By JENNIFER NOBLIT THISWEEKNEWS.COM Acting grumpy in the morning wasn’t a stretch for most of the members of Soul Monsters when they filmed a jingle video for a Folgers coffee contest.

The performance by the band that includes four Dublin graduates must have been convincing, because the group made it to the top 10 in the national contest and has a chance to win $25,000

and a mentoring session with Gavin DeGraw.

The video that receives the most online votes will win.

“The general idea of Hiro (Passalacqua) being all happy and everyone else being grumpy, that’s like it is anyways,” said Alan Becker, a 2007 Dublin Coffman High School graduate who filmed and produced the video for the band.

“He’s always happy.”

“I’m a terrible actor,” Passalacqua agreed.

Soul Monsters, which includes 2010 Centennial High School graduate Passalacqua, 2010 Coffman graduate Chris Culbertson, 2011 Dublin Scioto High School graduate JoeYamakawa and Tatsumi Suenaga, who graduated from Coffman last year, has been together for more than two years, although the last year has been spent without a drummer.

The Dublin Free Summer Lunch Program will start its third year June 17 in a Dublin City school for the first time.

The Monday-through-Thursday program that offers activities and lunch for children ages 1-18 will be held at Daniel Wright Elementary, 2335 W. Case Road, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 17-Aug. 8.

The program will be led by Wright teachers Sheryl Hardin and Josie Stewart. It draws volunteers from the school, but needs many more to sustain the program during the summer.

About 20 volunteers are needed each day from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

“The first hour is activities,” Stewart said.

“There’s an arts-and-crafts room, a science room, a reading room, gaming room and sports outside or in the gym.,” Stewart said.

Lunch is served from noon to 12:30 p.m.

“The volunteers usually sit with the kids and eat with them and help the little ones eat,” Stewart said.

Volunteering is really casual, and adults and responsible teens are accepted, she said.

“It’s just playing with the kids and interacting with them at lunch,” Hardin said.

Groups are also needed to sponsor activities for the children each day.

“They come in and decorate cookies, make a birdhouse or play soccer,” Hardin said of previous activities, adding that the Columbus Crew did a soccer camp with the children.

“Our music teacher did a music program ... We’ve had magicians, dentists (and) the fire department.”

The summer lunch program is funded federally, meets USDA guidelines and serves no pork. It’s basically an extension of the lunch program during the school year.

“It’s just about feeding kids,” Hardin said. “We want to give them something to do over the summer. It’s seamless summer feeding.

“Since we supply free and reduced-price lunches during the school year, it flows right from the school year into the summer.”

Last year, 2,235 lunches were served, an increase over the 1,780 served in the first year.

“Alan went home and edited it.”

The band also appointed Becker the leader for the project.

He received the call from Folgers about making the top 10 while he was in class.

“I was trying not the freak out in class,” he said.

Band members attend Columbus State Community College and Ohio State University, and keep busy with music and work.

Culbertson said he’s been working to promote their Folgers jingle full time and even filmed a jingle about the jingle.

“I emailed (OSU President) Gordon Gee,” he said. “He posted it on Facebook and Twitter. He emailed me back.”

Culbertson and Passalacqua won a Dublin Idol contest in 2010 with a performance.

Culbertson is hoping to see that repeated with the Folgers contest.

“I hope the Dublin community will support us,” he said. “You can vote once a day.”

“We know each other because we go to church together,” Culbertson said.

“Hiro and I started playing music with each other five or six years ago. Joe and Tatsumi also had a band and we came together for an open-mic night.”

The band meets once a week at Passalacqua’s residence in northwest Columbus to practice and often plays together at church.

They also play occasional gigs, including an upcoming show June 28 at the Basement.

The band includes guitars, a bass and ukulele and its members play alternative rock.

At shows, the group performs some original songs and covers of the Strokes, Black Keys and Incubus.

Yamakawa heard about the Folgers jingle contest on a commercial and the band decided to go for it.

The song was written in three sessions and recorded, then the video was shot.

“We recorded the song five or six times and used the track we liked,” Culbertson said.

Two Dublin schools earn Shaw awards Jerome High School and

Sells Middle School were recognized at State Science Day. The state science competition held earlier this month at Ohio State University awarded the two Dublin schools with the Harold C. Shaw Outstanding School Award for student achievement.

The award goes to schools that have at least four students who earn a superior rating or schools that have at least 80 percent of students on the team earn a superior rating.

At State Science Day, more than 1,200 students in grades 5-12 exhibited science, technology, engineering and math projects.

The school participated in Power of the Penny at Veterans Memorial recently, as 43 elementary schools from Dublin, Columbus, Worthington and Upper Arlington gathered to celebrate raising more than $41,000 in pennies.

Each school gave the money collected to charities. Olde Sawmille Elementary chose three charities to benefit from the $2,362 they raised.

Kids N Kamp, a group that supports the families of children who are affected by cancer, got $472.

The school gave $1,063 to Paws for Ability, an organization that trains service dogs to help people with disabilities.

Sundays at Scioto free concerts kick off June 9

By JENNIFER NOBLIT THISWEEKNEWS.COM The 30th year of the Dublin Arts Council’s summer concert series will see a more festive atmosphere.

The Sundays at Scioto summer concert series will run June 9 through July 28, offering up food trucks, ice cream and music.

The free concerts run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Sunday in the Scioto Park amphitheater, 7377 Riverside Drive.

“I think the most notable thing is we have food carts this year,” said David Guion, the Dublin Arts Council’s executive director. “They’re bringing in a new element in addition to Jeni’s Ice Cream.”

June 23, the Hadden Sayers Band will bring blues to Scioto Park and Yumbambe will follow June 30 with Latin music.

July 7, a 16-piece big band will bring on the sounds of the past when Swing’s the Thing plays tunes from Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington.The Reaganomics will cover 1980s hits July 14.

By JARROD ULREY THISWEEKSPORTS.COM During the Dublin Jerome High School boys lacrosse team’s 16-2 win over Whitehouse Anthony Wayne in the first round of the Division I Northwest Region tournament May 25, the last name Barco could be found in the scoring column five times.

The fact it was three brothers who scored in the same game made it memorable for the Celtics and the Barco family.

Senior attacker Tanner Barco and freshman attacker Connor Barco each had two goals while junior close defender Spencer Barco had one.

The same situation could occur next year if Hunter Barco, an eighth-grade lacrosse player at Grizzell Middle School, ends up on the Jerome boys team.

Carter Barco, who is in fifth grade, is the youngest of the five lacrosse-playing brothers.

“The thing is that it would be different if two of us scored, but Connor is only a freshman and Spencer plays defense,” Tanner said. “That was definitely something cool.

(Lacrosse) is just like a family thing now.”

Coffman girls again win district title

The Dublin Coffman High School girls track and field team won its third consecutive district championship.

The Shamrocks scored 141 points in the 16-team Division I, district 3 meet that concluded May 25 at Hilliard Darby, finishing well ahead of runnerup New Albany (86).

The top four finishers in each district event qualified for the regional LACROSSE >> B6 meet that began May 29 and concludes

Friday, May 31, at Pickerington North.

The top four finishers in each regional event advance to the state meet June 7 and 8 at Ohio State.

Coffman advanced all four of its relays, with the 800-meter relay of Rylee Axner, Beatrice Hannan, Kaylee Taylor and McKenzie Bailey (1 minute, 43.04 seconds) and 1,600 relay of Axner, Bailey, Taylor and Rachel Weber (3:59.21) winning district titles.

Also winning titles were Oyesade Olatoye in the discus (128 feet, 10 inches) and shot put (42-1), Hannan in the 100 (12.4) and 200 (25.98), Emily Mangelson in the 100 hurdles (15.2), Weber in the 800 (2:15.2) and Bridgette Widmyer in the high jump (5-0).

Placing second were Sana Qamar in the 3,200 (11:27.9) and the 400 relay of Shannon Downie, Emily Barber, Sarah Handy and Bailey (50.43), and

finishing third were Taylor in the 400 (59.4) and the 3,200 relay of Weber, Qamar, Anna Weber and Kaylen Chang (9:47.15).

Jerome coach is pleased with season

Although his team fell short of two goals, Dublin Jerome High School baseball coach Chris Huesman was proud of what the Celtics accomplished.

They came up short in their pursuit of a Division I district title, losing to fourth-seeded and eventual district champion Thomas Worthington 5-2 in a semifinal May 21 at Hilliard Davidson.

Jerome finished 19-8 overall, falling short of its goal for a 20-win season.

But the Celtics did manage to win their first outright league championship by going 12-2 in the OCC-Cardinal Division.

“We fell short of our second goal of winning 20 games by one game and fell two games short of winning the district title,” said Huesman, who was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

“We felt like we were one of the better teams in the Central District.”

In the OCC-Cardinal, Jerome finished ahead of Hilliard Darby (11-3), Westerville South (8-6), Westerville North (7-7), Scioto (5-8), Hilliard Bradley (5-9), Westerville Central (4-9) and Worthington Kilbourne (3-11).

Against Thomas, Jerome took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on junior Tyler Bookmyer’s groundout, which scored shortstop Masashi Sakamoto.

The Celtics made it 2-0 in the fourth on Sakamoto’s leadoff single and pitcher Jason Johnson’s sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals scored their five runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by right fielder Nick Highley’s two-run triple.

After a first-round bye, ninth-seeded Jerome scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat 24th-seeded Whetstone 4-3 in the second round of the district tournament May 15.

Johnson and Sakamoto were first-team all-league and second-team all-district.

Sakamoto, who will play at Akron, was 9-3 with a 2.14 ERA, 50 strikeouts and five walks in 55 2/3 innings.

Johnson, who will play at Dayton, was 4-3 with a 2.05 ERA, 58 strikeouts and 14 walks in 58 innings.

Sakamoto hit .321 with 14 RBI and Johnson hit .294 with 13 RBI. Senior catcher Kyle Lento was first-team all-district and second-team all-league after hitting .300 with 15 RBI. Senior infielder Colin Seely was honorable mention allleague and all-district.

Saunders happy with team’s development

Coffman coach Tim Saunders was pleased with his team’s improvement this season.

After beginning OCC-Central play 1-3, the Shamrocks went 7-3 to finish 8-6 and tie Upper Arlington for fourth behind Thomas (11-3), Olentangy Liberty (9-5) and Marysville (9-5) and ahead of Davidson (6-8), Central Crossing (5-9) and Westland (0-14).

Dublin’s lightweight 8 boat earns trip to nationals

By JARROD ULREY THISWEEKSPORTS.COM What the members of the Dublin high school club rowing team’s boys lightweight 8 experienced after they crossed the finish line in the Midwest Junior Rowing championships May 19 was “palpable energy,” according to Scioto senior Luke Neuroth.

The boat’s third-place finish on Harsha Lake in Bethel and qualification to the Youth National regatta June 7 and 8 on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., wasn’t something that

seemed likely to Neuroth or his teammates about three weeks ago.

Coach Joe Lambert was expecting to enter two lightweight 4 boats in the Midwest regatta until one of his coxswains was out sick during a practice in early May. With the desire to have both lightweight 4s practicing, Lambert put the boats together into a lightweight 8 and was stunned by the results.

The lightweight 8 immediately rowed times that Lambert believed could make it a contender for a national berth, and

his athletes didn’t disappoint by finishing in 6 minutes, 25.37 seconds in the Midwest meet.

“We’re super excited,” Lambert said. “What happened in one of our practices was that we decided to put our two lightweight 4s together and immediately we saw how well they jelled together with everyone together. We decided to do (2,000 meters) on the water and really didn’t have to coach them too much. I knew our first lightweight 4 was quick, but when I put the first and second boats together it was like lightning on the water.”

“One day our coxswain was sick so we had to put our two lightweights together, and (Lambert) said, ‘Surprise, we’re going to do (2,000 meters),’” said Neuroth, who sits in the 7 seat. “Our times kept dropping.”

Evan Taylor is expected to be in the stroke seat with Keegan Graham, Johan McGwire, Sam Gugliemotto, Brennan Kelly, Ian Stamm, Thomas McCabe and Jon Coyle also on the boat at nationals.

The top three boats in the boys lightweight 8 advanced from the Midwest meet, with Dublin finishing behind the

Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club (6:10.57) and Detroit Boat Club (6:11.14).

Also advancing to a grand final in the Midwest meet but failing to move on for Dublin was the boys lightweight 4 stroked by Taylor (fifth, 7:35.15). The first varsity 4 stroked by Brian Smith was sixth (7:21.31).

Westerville sends boat to nationals

St. Charles senior Patrick LeCorgne and Westerville Central senior Ryan Kesselring will be making their third respective appearances at youth nationals for the Westerville club team.

LeCorgne and Kesselring row on the first varsity 4 that took second (7:04.21) in the Midwest meet. Joining them on the boat at nationals will be DeSales senior Cody Sarisky, ColumbusAcademy junior Brad Luckett and Westerville Central sophomore coxswain Kate Malone.

Last season, LeCorgne and Kesselring rowed on the lightweight 4 that finished a program-best third at youth nationals.

“We didn’t have quite the quality of lightweight rowers that we’ve had in the past, so we thought we were better off going with a heavyweight boat,” LeCorgne said. “The best part about (competing at nationals) is the camaraderie it brings.

There’s nothing better than to be with guys that are killing it for you.”

Also reaching grand finals at the Midwest meet but failing to advance to nationals for the Westerville boys were its first varsity 8 (sixth, 6:20.22), its lightweight 8 (fourth, 6:35.57), its lightweight 4 (sixth, 7:47.35) and its first varsity 2x (sixth, 7:46.97). “(The first varsity 4) is a tight group and enormously trusting of one another,” coach Matt Chase said. “At the championship level when you get to grand finals, it’s a battle to be in the top three. This was really a down year for our club in terms of numbers, and (the first varsity 4 race) was close to the last (race at the Midwest meet), so I was just thrilled that they qualified.”

UA sends five boats to SRAA nationals

it had five boats qualify for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America nationals for high school programs held May 25 and 26 on Lake Lanier in Camden, N.J. In the Midwest Scholastic championships May 11 and 12 on Lake Dillon in Nashport, the Golden Bears finished third (146.25) behind Chicago New Trier (362) and Rockford (Ill.) Crew (205.5) as 42 teams scored.

Advancing for the girls team were its varsity 8 (fourth, 6:03.68), its junior 8 (third, 5:48.64) and its freshman 8 (second, 6:05.1).

Competing on the varsity 8 boat were seniors GraceTucker, Chloe Capuano,Ashley Holden and coxswain Maura Griffith, juniors Bridget Schodorf, Hannah Johnston and Grace Saalman and sophomores Genevieve Johanni and Olivia Balcerzak.

Competing on the junior 8 were juniors Ashley Cameron and Kaitlyn Roberts, sophomores Marissa Donadio, Caroline Bair, Haley Haxton, Hoda Khamis, Alexis Sturtz and Elly Cooper and freshman Emily Song.

Competing on the freshman 8 were freshmen Julie Adams, Remi Chohan, Allison Mellor, Katie Meyers, Annabelle Pan, Jordan Popson, Sarah Schulz, Kendall Trudeau and Aletheia Yami.

“We’re very excited,” said Tucker, who competed at SRAA nationals for the third consecutive season. “It’s nice because we only have 16 varsity rowers this year but we were still able to qualify three boats to nationals.”

The boys team advanced to SRAA nationals in the junior 8 (first, 5:06.5) and the lightweight 4 (fourth, 5:37.37).

Competing on the junior 8 were juniors Nick Kochanek, Cole Overcash and coxswain Jacob Walsh and sophomores Peter Bruce, Zach Dickinson, Ben Perez, Houston Burcham, Isaac Margard and Bryan Gardiner.

Competing on the lightweight 4 were seniors Will Byrd and coxswain Will Berg and juniors Ian Briggs, Nick Hemleben and John Masters.

“This will be my last race ever, so I’m really excited,” said Berg, who made his third appearance at SRAA nationals.

Jerome boys, girls sweep 3,200 relay

The Jerome boys and girls teams won their respective 3,200 relays in the district 2 meet.

Brooke Boyle, Ashleigh Sherman, Erin McAuliffe and Kaitlyn Willette combined to win the girls 3,200 relay in 9:36.56, as the Celtics finished fifth (59) of 17 teams, behind champion Gahanna (141.5).

Also winning a district title for the girls team was freshman Tiffany Hill, who finished first in the 1,600 (5:18.88). The Celtics' other regional qualifiers were Sherman in the 1,600 (second, 5:18.99), Carly Davis in the 3,200 (third, 11:36.8) and the 1,600 relay of Devin Sadler, Taylor Elder, Casey Nitschke and Hannah Kayuha (fourth, 4:08.73).

Commentary

State’s high school sports system working just fine It’s regional tournament weekend for most high school sports, and state weekend for boys tennis.

Don’t tell anybody, but there are some private schools represented.

The tournaments are going on as scheduled, so that must be a good sign.

That the most recent competitive balance proposal failed by 19 votes May 16 wasn’t a huge surprise. That 191 schools did not vote was an intolerable show of apathy toward a referendum so important to the future of prep sports in this state.

That this process of finding supposedly needed “balance” will continue seemingly ad nauseum is almost as bad.

Studies repeatedly have shown that around 40 percent of Ohio High School Athletic Association state championships are won by the 17 percent of schools that are private. That means public schools win 60 percent of the titles. While nothing is perfect,

Sure, it’d be intriguing to see the likes of DeSales, Hartley and Watterson in Division I for all sports, which might have happened with the multiplier system included in the most recent and failed proposal. For the

For many families, sending children to private schools doesn’t come from a desire to win championships.

Lots of families whose children attend our area’s private schools aren’t the first of their relatives to do so, or even the first of their siblings.

Who is anyone to tell a family they can’t send their children to private schools? It’s their money and their belief system.

Is that to say going purely for sports does not happen? Of course it does, but not as much as you’d think.

Turner had 52 goals and 15 assists and Minnick had 37 goals and eight assists.

Other states have toed a harder line than Ohio, including Texas. Until 2003, no private schools competed in the University Interscholastic League, their equivalent of the OHSAA, because most non-public schools there belong to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. But that year, on the heels of their leagues disbanding and TAPPS complaining that the two had become too large to compete against other member schools, Dallas Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit sought and gained entry into the UIL. A condition of their joining was that both would compete in Division 5A, the highest possible classification.

It took seven years for either school to win a state championship. In the 2010 5A boys soccer final, Dallas Jesuit edged Strake 1-0 in a shootout.

Neither school has won a state title since.

Kent Seitz was a district qualifier in singles last season, but he and 2011 graduate Sean Stein reached the second round at state in doubles in 2011 after placing fourth at state in 2010.

“Sean and I went to state as the No. 3 seed and still finished fourth there, so it shows that seeding isn’t everything,” Kent Seitz said. “This is my senior year, so I’m going to do everything I can to win matches at state. We’re going to stay with what we’re doing, but we need to have better footwork at state.

I had problems with my serve at district, so we’re working on our serves so they don’t come back to bite us like they did (at district).”

Also competing at district for Jerome was the doubles team of Patrick Liu and Pranav Kaza, who lost to Coffman’s Tyler Buchan and Leon Cai 63, 6-2 in the first round.

“Pranav didn’t even play varsity tennis last year, so he’s come a long way,” Stephen said. “Patrick and Pranav both played well and gave Coffman a fairly competitive match.”

Jerome wrapped up its dualmatch schedule last week. The Celtics lost to Pickerington North 3-2 on May 20 and fell to UA 3-0 in a Division I OTCA district semifinal May 21 to finish 14-5 overall.

NFL player organizes camp

NFL player and Marysville native Chase Blackburn will hold a youth football camp June 22 at Marysville High School to benefit his foundation, Blackburn Chasing the Cure.

“We played OK, but we still have room for improvement,” Cai said. “Our match with New Albany was tight, but we pulled Coffman’s Buchan, Cai through. The Hush Sound enjoying newfound freedom and fun The Beat caught up with Greta Morgan, singer/keyboardist/songwriter for The Hush Sound, following a sound check and at the start of a five-hour or so break before show time.

She planned to put the time to good use, reading and getting coffee and maybe making a purchase at a local Barnes & Noble.

Morgan and her mates have mastered the art of making the best of time off.

In 2009, the Chicago-based quartet was an emerging darling of the indie-pop scene, offering up songs quirky and charming, when the members decided collectively that there were other things they wanted to get done and they were young enough yet to do them.

The time apart was beneficial all around. For Morgan in particular, who started jamming with cofounder Bob Morris when she was just 14 and was 17 when the band’s debut CD, So Sudden, was released, it was an opportunity to become a better musician and a better writer, she said.

“I read that the choreographer Martha Graham said, ‘In order for a dancer to have freedom, they must first have discipline,’and that’s what I found in those years,” she explained.

“I’ve made more records and done hundreds of shows, put in so many hours, and I feel like I have some of that freedom.”

The Hush Sound co-headlines the A&R Music Bar Wednesday, June 5, with Hockey. River City Extension, Genevieve (from Company of Thieves) and Lucas Carpenter open. Tickets are $20. Visit promowestlive.com.

The friends never totally abandoned The Hush Sound, playing shows annually – or more often – in their hometown while pursuing other options, be they other bands (Morgan in Gold Motel, Morris in Stamps) or finishing school. The topic of a full-time “reunion” was often broached, but the time never felt right.

“Being in a band, it’s like being one-third friend, one-third creative partner and one-third business partner. You have to have all of those three, and it seemed we only had one or two at any point in time,” she told The Beat.

“It always felt like we picked right

up where we left off, but when we’d talk about playing and touring together again, there would always be a project or a semester that needed completed.”

According to Morgan, it was when the band stopped trying to have fun that it started to have fun.

And when she and Morris stopped trying to write songs that sounded like The Hush Sound, the songs began to sound like ones they wanted to make with The Hush Sound.

The newfound freedom and fun have found their way into the band’s live shows, increasingly so as they’ve been out on the road

together once again.

“Our playing is more spontaneous, and the banter ... It’s like a comedy act,” she said, adding, “We’re like a bunch of siblings, goofing around and picking on each other.”

There’s a certain spontaneity within their set lists as well, fueled by social media and the band’s desire to engage its fans.

“We get lots of requests on Twitter and Facebook, songs that maybe we hadn’t been playing as often.

But when you hear someone tell you they’ve been waiting five years to hear a certain song, you want to do something that people are going to enjoy.”

Morgan hopes audiences will enjoy the new songs The Hush Sound is releasing as well. The band has two new singles – Not a Stranger and Scavengers – and Morgan hopes to continue the pattern.

“If I was a fan, what I would want is less music more often,” she explained.

Borgata Pizza Cafe turning into hidden gem

Borgata Pizza Cafe is an underthe-radar restaurant that should be brought up in “hidden gem” discussions.

Skillfully catching floppy, hightossed dough-discs for nearly four years now, this hard-working family operation doesn’t cut corners – not when slicing its pizzas into pie pieces, not when scratch-making its own crusts, sauce, meatballs, pastas and so on.

Located in a strip mall just off state Route 161, Borgata occupies a gleamingly clean space that’s considerably roomier and more airy, modern and inviting than you’d think based on its nondescript storefront.

Inhabiting pride of place is a big open kitchen with a wrap-around bar equipped with about a dozen frontrow seats onto the tossing and cooking action. Borgata also has a handful of extra-large tables, a few fourseaters and a flat-screen.

After ordering a $3 beer (go bottle of Stella or 16-ounce can of Yuengling) that you’ll happily dump into a tall frosted mug, try a palatepunching starter such as the terrific – and terrifically messy – Spicy Sausage Stuffed Peppers ($8).

Kicky Cubanelles (similar to banana peppers) are generously mounded with “unsheathed” lumps of good, juicy sausage.

These get broiler-blasted with chunky and oregano-scented marinara sauce plus gobs of gooey mozzarella.

Dainty it ain’t, especially eaten

quaintly off – as everything is here – an aluminum pizza pan “plate.”

The big and meaty wings are also worth a shot ($9/pound, or about 10; served with celery and the kind of good blue cheese sauce everyone should offer).

Instead of being greasy after frying, they are sort of rotisserie-broiled in a contraption with a rotating basket.

This results in an attractive chargrilled flavor if not exceedingly crispy exteriors. Go with the thick, fruity and incendiary housemade Pineapple-Habanero BBQ sauce.

Borgata likely serves the best deals on “nonna”-style (Italian granny) homemade pasta dishes in town ($7.25, with crusty and cheesy garlic bread).

Whether the marinara-sauced cavatelli or spaghetti with pesto (my preference), Borgata’s irregularshaped, rib-sticking pasta is strongly recommended.

So is the Calzone ($10) – but not if you’re dining alone. Arriving welloiled and flagrantly garlic, Borgata’s hardly low-cal ’zone is approximately the size of a Fiat.

It’s also better than most you’ll ever try.

enveloping crust is thin and crispy and embraces a cheese-head’s dream of creamy ricotta melded to footlongstrand-forming melted mozzarella.

Dunk-buddy tomato sauce (bold, chunky, oregano-y) comes on the side.

This brings us to Borgata’s thincrusted, NYC-style pizzas (huge 16-

inchers start at $13.50).

Their mildly sweet, blistered-on-the-toastyedged crusts sport a crispiness that diminishes toward the superthin tips.

Lots of high-grade toppings and topping combos are available, but be careful.

For example, while I quite liked the Mediterranean Roasted Vegetable pizza (big chunks of eggplant, zucchini, sweet peppers, caramelized onions and spinach) and the whole-hog Supreme (sausage, pepperoni, peppers, onions, mushrooms and more), they both weighed down and deliquesced the bready base.

Therefore crust-lovers should stay minimalist with just one or two addons – such as rich, pliant and classic sliced meatballs plus spinach.

Borgata’s portions are enormous, so plan on leftovers.

But don’t forget to (paraphrasing the great Godfather movie) leave a tip and take the cannoli ($2) home, because you’ll want that crispy, pipedto-order, better-than-any-in-the-city dessert tube later.

My favorite was the wonderful pistachio-graced version, but since you’re right here right now, spring for a chocolate chipper, too.

Clintonville food truck returns to previous location In an age when food trucks seem to be on every corner, it seemed many people still lamented the loss of Yerba Buena.

Carlos and Carolina Gutierrez, who owned the mobilefood enterprise perennially parked in Clintonville, putYerba Buena Latin Grill on hiatus for a year while they opened a second brick-and-mortar restaurant and welcomed a baby, Mia. But plenty of customers noticed.

“I did get a lot of phone calls and a lot of comments on Facebook,” Mrs. Gutierrez said.

Three weeks ago, Yerba Buena returned its roost at 4490 Indianola Ave., between East

Beaumont and Garden roads.

“People really like our food,” Mrs. Gutierrez said. “They embrace us pretty well.”

The food truck specializes in casual, inexpensive Venezuelan and Colombian cuisines, including the signature dish, the arepa – a type of sandwich using grilled cornmeal cakes to hold lettuce, pico de gallo, avocado and a choice of chicken, beef, pork

or grilled vegetables.

Another specialty is the patacon, sweet deep-fried plantains with a number of garnishes and also a choice of meat or vegetables.

The menu delves into Mexican territory with quesadillas and tacos.

One option is the fish taco, batter-fried cod topped with lettuce, corn salad, avocado and a ubiquitous chipotle sauce.

There also are a number of sides and salads. Prices are between $2 and $7.

The truck made its debut in May 2011 at the corner of Glenmont Avenue and North High Street.

But after numerous complaints to the city about the truck being parked overnight and a new landlord taking over the property, the Gutierrezes moved the truck four months later.

It was open another two months on Indianola before the Gutierrezes closed it to make way for their second restaurant, Arepazo Tapas & Wine in Gahanna, which opened in March 2012.

It followed the opening of El Arepazo, a quick-casual restaurant that opened Downtown seven years earlier.

Yerba Buena will be open warm-weather months throughout the year. It is open 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Speaking of food trucks, mobile food purveyors Matt Heaggans and Rosa Huff are both consolidating and expanding.

In brief Run for the Rainbow to benefit hospital

Circle of Friends, a volunteer organization supporting Nationwide Children’s Hospital, will host its 10th annual Run for the Rainbow 5K Run/ Walk and Kids Fun Run Friday, June 14, at New Albany Market Square, 180 Market St., New Albany.

Proceeds benefit pediatric cancer research in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s.

The event this year features the addition of a butterfly dedication prior to the race and many other pre- and post-race family fun activities.

Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. with races beginning at 7 p.m. (Kids Fun Run) and 7:15 p.m. (5K Competitive Run/ Walk).

Registration fees are $20 for the Kids Fun Run and $35 for the 5K Run/Walk.

Awards will be given to the top finishers in each race.

Run for the Rainbow also has activities including food and beverages, booths and activities, mascots and more.

Sustainable farming focus of summer tour

The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) has announced its 2013 series of free public tours of Ohio sustainable and organic farms.

Sixteen farm operations will be highlighted from June through November. For more than 30 years, OEFFA has offered this series so that Ohioans can learn more about how farmers are meeting the growing demand for sustainably produced food.

Consumers interested in local foods, farmers and market gardeners who want to learn from each other's successes and mistakes, aspiring and beginning farmers and anyone interested in learning more about the production and marketing techniques of sustainable farmers in Ohio are invited to attend.

The tour begins the weekend of June 8-9 in Meigs and Athens counties.

Central Ohio farms on the 2013 tour include: Northridge Organic Farm, Johnstown, “Organic farm growth and transition tour,” Sunday, July 21; Sunny Meadows Flower Farm, Columbus, “Sustainable cut flower farm tour,” Sunday, July 28; and Brandt’s Farm, Carroll, “Innovative cover crop farm tour,” Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Other featured stops include poultry production in Circleville, an organic dairy farm in Millersburg, a local food farm-to-plate in Hamilton County and specialty crops in Wooster.
