INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Tradition is a common theme in holiday events schedule

We want Dublin to come to its own community parade and evening celebration ‌ It’s a good feeling when people have a reason to stay home.�

Dublin will celebrate the stars and stripes with its traditional parade, music and more.

The events lineup for the annual Independence Day Celebration in Dublin starts at 8 a.m. with the Sherm Sheldon Fishing Derby and activities continue with the traditional parade, free concert and fireworks.

Fishing derby The Sherm Sheldon Fishing Derby is a longtime Dublin tradition.

The event, in its 29th year, draws children for a friendly fishing competition to the pond outside the Dublin Community Recreation Center. “They just stocked the pond so there are a lot of fish to be had,� said Mary Jo DiSalvo, a Dublin events administrator. “We want people to come fishing.�

Inflation Celebration Events continue at 9 a.m. at Graeter’s of Dublin, 6255 Frantz Road, with the Inflation Celebration where people can watch parade balloons being inflated. “We had this for St. Patrick’s Day (at Graeter’s) and there were more people than ever,� DiSalvo said, adding she expects a bigger crowd for the Fourth of July.

A balloon sculptor and circus calliope will also be on hand at the Inflation Celebration to provide a festive environment.

DiSalvo said last week. “We have a cowgirl equestrian team and Uncle Sam’s crazy cart.�

Grand Marshal Jan Rozanski will ride in the parade with his family while former grand marshals will be on board another float.

Children can participate in the parade by decorating their bikes and riding with the bike brigade, DiSalvo said.

This year, organizers will focus on keeping the parade flowing with a traffic light. “For the first time we’re using a portable traffic light to keep gaps in the parade to a minimum,� DiSalvo said.

The light will be near the Sunoco on Bridge Street and regulate the speed of units to keep everything moving. “We’ll start with one central location for the day,� said Trish Lackey, events administrator. “It’s a pilot program and if that works well we’ll add a few more for St. Patrick’s Day.�

Evening concert Festivities continue in the evening in the Coffman High School stadium, 6780 Coffman Road.

Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with the Skyhoundz Hyperflite Canine Frisbee Disc Championship set for 5 p.m.

The Emerald City Swing Orchestra will provide music at 5 p.m., followed by rock and soul band, the Floorwalkers, at 6:15 p.m.

Scioto graduate Leah Philipp will sing the National Anthem at the concert and headliners, Earth, Wind and Fire will take the stage at 8 p.m. “Tables sold out for the second year in a row,� DiSalvo said. “People can set up in the grass around the stadium or sit in the bleachers,� she said. “We’ll have lots of food vendors on hand.�

Entrance into the evening concert is free, although all on-field tables sold out the day they went on sale in May. Bleacher seats and seating on the grass around the stadium are open and free.

Fireworks round out the day at 9:50 p.m. “People tell us this fireworks show rivals any show they’ve been to anywhere,� DiSalvo said.

With tables sold out and the holiday falling on a Friday, DiSalvo said the city is planning for an extra-large crowd for the Independence Day Celebration. “We want Dublin to come to its own community parade and evening celebration,� she said. “It’s a good feeling when people have a reason to stay home.�

Rozanski had a role in major issues that shaped city

By JENNIFER NOBLIT ThisWeekNews.com Jan Rozanski has left a mark on Dublin.

As a member of Dublin City Council from 1986 to 1993, Rozanski was involved in establishing the Dublin Community Recreation Center, the Dublin Chiller and the city’s Art in Public Places program, and he’ll be honored for those accomplishments and more as the 2014 Independence Day Grand Marshal.

“I was shocked when I got the call,” Rozanski said of learning of the honor.

“I had no clue, no idea,” he said.

“I didn’t believe the mayor when he first said it.

“I’m really honored. There are so many people that contribute to this town. To be considered is a real honor and being selected was another surprise.”

As grand marshal, Rozanski will lead Dublin’s Independence Day parade at 11 a.m., judge floats and judge the table decorating contest at the evening concert.

Rozanski, who is currently a senior building inspector for Dublin, began his service to the city with a seat on the board of zoning appeals.

He fell into the position in city government, however, after his wife secretly applied for him to become a member of the board of zoning appeals.

“I was flattered and I thoroughly enjoyed being on it,” Rozanski said. “I got to know the city better.”

After seeing his work on the BZA, a few neighbors got together a petition, campaign information and a $500 campaign donation, to convince Rozanski to run for a Dublin City Council seat.

“How do you say ‘no’ to that?”

Rozanski asked. “I ran and I won.”

During his time on council, Rozanski served as mayor for four years, and was involved in passing a bond issue to build the Dublin Community Recreation Center and he helped bring the Chiller Ice Rink to Dublin.

While Rozanski was on council,

Jan Rozanski’s longtime service to his community was recognized with the honor of being named grand marshal for the annual Independence Day Celebration. the city’s bed tax was also approved and council committed 25 percent of the funds it collected to go to the Art in Public Places program.

“Those are some of the accomplishments I’m proud to have been involved in,” Rozanski said. “It’s great to live in a community that’s growing and developing and even greater to be part of it.”

But Rozanski’s public service doesn’t end there; he coached soccer for the Dublin Soccer League and sat on the league’s board.

“I had three boys who were very athletic in soccer, football and baseball,” he said. “I helped coach and referee.”

Before his service in Dublin, Rozanski served his country in the Army and was stationed along the Czechoslovakian border in Germany during the Vietnam War. Being in the military is something of a family tradition for the Rozanskis.

Rozanski’s father was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed by the Japanese and served in the Pacific throughout the war.

Rozanski’s sons joined the

military as well; Alex joined the Marines and Nick was serving with the Ohio Army National Guard in Afghanistan in 2012 when he was killed in action.

“Alex, my youngest, was always proud of his grandfather and joined the Marines,” Rozanski said.

“And my oldest son, Nick, was so proud of his younger brother, he decided to join.

“He thought it was the family thing to do,” Rozanski said.

“He ended up as an instructor at the officer candidate training school at Rickenbacker and had a lot of influence on young officers.”

With two sons, one stepson and nine grandchildren, it’s difficult to get everyone in one place, but that will happen when Rozanski is honored as the grand marshal next month.

“I’m just so pleased and happy that all the kids will be there,” he said.

“There will be 18 of us. I’m looking forward to all of us getting together because it doesn’t happen often that we’re all in one place at one time.” jnoblit@thisweeknews.com
