An art from the Far East has drawn 65 Dublin students into its rhythm.

The Dublin City School District’s Taiko program has 65 middle and high school students from throughout the district who have learned the ceremonial drumming of Japan.

The public can check out the action and support the program by attending the seventh annual Dublin Taiko Gala at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Scioto High School, 4000 Hard Road.

The historical monument at the corner of state Route 42 and Industrial Parkway was dismantled last week and is set to be moved away from the busy intersection.

“It’s been in danger of being wiped out by a truck any day,” Jerome Township Trustee Bob Merkle said.

Debate has been going on for years over where to put the 100-year-old monument that bears the names of 400 soldiers who fought in the Civil War and other early American conflicts.

uous music. They’re so focused and it’s so choreographed,’ ” Barrett said of the usual reaction to a Taiko performance.

“Everything has to match and not many people around here can see it.”

The group is working to change that and travels throughout the district and country with performances.

“The beginners will do the Columbus Asian Festival,” Barrett said.

“The veterans are going to play at Wright Elementary’s International Festival. This year we were asked to play at the Columbus Arts Festival.”

Many of the new members of the Taiko program were attracted to the artful drumming after seeing a performance.

“I saw a performance at the Asian Festival a few years ago,” said Noah Issa-Abbas, a Davis Middle School sixth-grader.

“It turned out to be this group’s performance. I knew I wanted to join.”

Issa-Abbas is a first-year Taiko player and said the drumming that calls for large, choreographed movement takes a toll on the body.

“It’s probably 85 percent physical and 15 percent musical,” Issa-Abbas said.

“For the first few weeks after every class you have sore calves,” he said.

cise, but as you stick with it you get used to it.”

Davis eighth-grader Cheyenne Humphrey got involved with the group three years ago after watching his older sister participate.

“I like the variety of drumming and how they sound, the different pitches,” he said.

Scott Trask has also been doing Taiko drumming for three years.

“I’m in a lot of music related stuff, but I never heard of this before,” the Davis eighth-grader band member said. “It was a completely new topic.”

Taiko has quite a few differences from being in band, though.

“It’s more than just playing in a chair,” Trask said. “It’s choreographed moves.”

Taiko has takenTrask to Indiana for performances – one was televised.

“I like the people and the music and the drums,” he said.

“I like how it’s so simple, yet so complicated at the same time.”

The doors for the Dublin Taiko Gala open at 3 p.m. and the public can peruse silent auction items and concessions until the 4 p.m. show.

Tickets for the gala can be purchased at the door and are $8 for adults and $4 for students and children.

Eight of ten Dublin residents think their city is excellent.

A biennial community survey conducted by Martin Saperstein of Saperstein Associates found residents are pretty pleased with their home town.

The survey was given to a random sample of 400 registered voters within Dublin via landlines and cell phones, Saperstein told Dublin City Council members last week.

“The survey is representative of the community at large,” he said.

Residents largely reported liking life in Dublin, with 78 percent rating it an excellent place to live and another 20 percent rated it good. Only 2 percent of residents rated Dublin an average place to live.

As for working in Dublin, 60 percent rated the city excellent and 34 percent said it’s good.

Retiring in Dublin, however, is not viewed as favorably.

“Only three of 10 consider Dublin a good place to retire,” Saperstein said.

Residents also reported satisfaction with city amenities, services, police and communications, although traffic flow was rated at the bottom of the list.

“Improving traffic flow is a top priority,” Saperstein said.

While Dublin uses the community survey to check up on city amenities and services, it’s

also used to gain input about projects.

“The information is extremely valuable to tell us if we’re on the right course for our current planning efforts and in mapping out plans for the future,” Director of Community Relations Sandra Puskarcik said in a news release.

Managing traffic flow along with keeping the city safe and lowering or maintaining property taxes were among top priorities for residents surveyed.

Residents were also asked for input about nine community projects and rated improving traffic flow at the top, followed by implementing the Bridge Street district and improving the library.

Bringing more shops and restaurants to Dublin along with constructing bike paths fell lower on the priority lists of residents surveyed, while building a new city hall was rated last.

When it comes to priorities for the Bridge Street district, residents surveyed want to see more park land along the Scioto River and a pedestrian bridge, as well as more civic activity such as green space, a plaza, city offices or a new library.

Interest in expanding Dublin’s downtown to the east and adding more housing options within walking distance to Historic Dublin were rated lower.

City Council members will use the results from the community survey to plan goals and list priority projects.

Another package, for $44,000, included $19,000 for marketing, $2,000 for Presidents Cup pins and $23,000 for banners and flags to post on bridges, lamp posts and buildings.

A third option, for $204,000, included a legacy book and video for $13,000, a ceremonial motorcade through the city for $6,000 and a Presidents Cup street festival with entertainment for $70,000. The large campaign also includes $95,000 for a Presidents Cup advertisement that incorporates fivefoot golf balls, as well as a public art project that would put a piano in Historic Dublin throughout the summer for $20,000.

Council members were largely unsupportive of the plan to install 12 five-foot golf balls somewhere in Dublin to create excitement and knowledge of the Presidents Cup. “It’s not a good use of money,” Marilee Chinnici-Zuercher said.

“I’m not wild about those,” Cathy Boring agreed. “It’s too much money for something temporary.”

“LaRocca stated that (Muirfield Village Golf Club) completed an internal study regarding the fence and it is desired for several reasons including PGA TOUR requests, security concerns and certain trespassing and vandalism issues,” information from the city said.

Muirfield lies within a planned unit development and would need approval of an amended final development plan from the Planning and Zoning Commission before course officials could erect a fence, information from the city said.

Big volunteer results grow from tiny start Never underestimate the power of a small group.

In 1970, a group of doctors’ wives in Grove City wanted to raise money to help battle cancer. More women joined the cause. Many were what we called housewives in those days.

Again, don’t underestimate.

Mary Crane, of Grove City, was one of the originals. “Cancer was coming to the forefront and not going away anytime soon,” she said. “We wanted to help.” They started with fundraisers such as bake sales and card parties.

“We heard that a couple other towns were starting thrift shops to raise money,” Mary said.They followed the example and rented a little store on Broadway next to an auction house. The first year they made $500. In 2012, they donated $31,745 to the cause.

They moved a couple times for better space. In the last decade, they opted to send their monies to the Columbus Cancer Clinic, begun in 1921, and in 2005 became an agency of LifeCare Alliance, which provides services to seniors across the region.

“We met with them and were impressed and decided to go with them. The Worthington and Reynoldsburg shops decided to do the same thing,” Mary said.

The Columbus Cancer Clinic is Medicare-certified and provides education about cancer prevention and early detection, head-to-toe cancer screenings, examinations and mammograms, regardless of patients’ ability to pay. In 2011, the program served 3,469 clients providing 1,593 mammograms, 1,163 head-to-toe cancer screenings, and 713 clients with home care support services.

Linda Sharp, retired, who has been a volunteer for almost 10 years, said it feels good to give to the clinic because it helps people locally. “If someone needs a wig, because of their treatments, they can go there and get one.”

Shirley Barnes of Grove City, recruited by Mary Crane, loved working the shop for 37 years.

The second year, she was asked to be president and said they needed more help and they formed a board of volunteers.

“We didn’t even have a sign yet.”

“We hoped to find a cure but didn’t realize at the time there were so many types (of cancer), she said. “I believed in the cause.”

The Grove City Thrift Shop, located off the north side of Stringtown Road at 3684 Garden Court, is not easy to find.

But once you do, little treasures abound. It’s not just about the trinkets or clothes you might find; it’s the people who will

help you. Volunteers are what make this trip worth it.

After a little shopping, I got easy answers to my quesLIZ tion, “Why do THOMPSON you volunteer here?” The overriding answer is because cancer touched their lives. The volunteers are giving back.

Shirley says she always got more out of working at the shop than she put into it. “The stories customers would tell us about people in their lives with cancer, well I think they felt safe telling us. If we volunteered there, we must have compassion.”

Betty Lewis of Columbus, a retired school secretary with South-Western City Schools, has volunteered since 1995. Her mother and mother-in-law had cancer.

Sue Shilling, of Mt. Sterling, said her husband and mother had cancer. She was a frequent shopper there but after retirement, she wanted to contribute to a worthy cause.

Dorothy Lanch, of Orient, has a little more than a year under her belt at the shop. “I felt like I’d been here for years the moment I walked in the door as a volunteer,” she said.A friend died from cancer and breast cancer is in her family. “I wanted to do something worthwhile after working in the corporate world for 41 years,” Dorothy said. She retired from Nationwide Insurance. “It’s shattering to see someone retire and months later they are gone, just like that,” she said, referring to her friend.

Sharon Downing of Grove City, a 37-year volunteer, said, “It’s a business and there is a lot of background work these selfgiving volunteers do. We have lost some volunteers to cancer and some of our volunteers are cancer survivors.” Sharon and her family have struggled with the disease.

There are more than 50 shop volunteers with this passion to give back. I wish I could name them all, but that’s not why they do this.

Mary said, “No matter what you do, or how you do it, or when you do it, you can help fight cancer.”

Early days in Merion Village neighborhoods South of downtown Columbus is a thriving community of neighborhoods called Merion Village. Merion Village is often assumed, with a little misspelling, to be associated with Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox of Revolutionary War fame. It isn’t.

In reality, the Merions of Merion Village have their own interesting story to tell.

Frontier Franklinton had been established in 1797 on the west banks at the forks of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. It had grown so slowly at first that its founder, Lucas Sullivant, had offered free lots to early settlers on Gift Street. The home of one of the early settlers, David Deardurff, has been preserved.

A few doors down from the Deardurffs on the other side of the street, a man named Isaiah Voris opened a tavern. His wife helped promote one of the classic early settlement stories in the area. Sally Wait had come to central Ohio in 1805 with her father Jenks Wait of Johnstown, N.Y., and lived on land about a mile south of Franklinton near an old salt lick. Several years later William Merion arrived in the village and stayed at the Voris tavern. While staying at the tavern he noticed Sally Wait walking home from Franklinton one day. He approached her with a bridle in hand and said he was looking for his horse which had wandered away. Knowing horses

drifted toward the salt lick, the two walked about a mile together along the river.

A short time later, Mrs. Voris complimented Sally on her choice of attractive men. Sally noted that they were only looking for a horse. Mrs. Voris pointed out that Stewart’s horse was in the barn during that whole time. Over the next several months, Sally Wait and William Stewart saw each other many times. On Feb. 14, 1809, they were married.

After living in Franklinton for a brief time, they moved across the river and south to a large tract of land owned by William, his brother Nathaniel and his sister Millie Morrill.

The 1,800-acre parcel was part of the Refugee Tract that ran from what is now Refugee Road on the south to Fifth Avenue on the north. It had been set aside for refugees from Nova Scotia who had lost their property because of their loyalty to the cause of the American Revolution.

William Merion staked out his portion of the tract and built a log house covered with clapboards at what is now the corner of High Street and Moler Avenue. The house was rather

large for that time period with a movable partition made of boards that could be removed for large parties or other gatherings.

According to one later account, living near the edge of a large forest was quite pleasant. “Sugar maple trees furnished them their sugar. Game was plentiful. Wild grapes, plums and pawpaws were everywhere. One time a dog chased a wild turkey into the house and when it was captured it was found to weigh twenty pounds.”

William served briefly in the War of 1812 and then returned home where he continued to clear his property and develop it as farmland. In 1817, the family built a larger frame house.

With increased prosperity, they began planning for an even better house. In 1819, the brick home began to be built. Windows with panes 10 inches by 12 inches – quite large for that period – were put in place. The woodwork and the mantle in the parlor were painted pale blue and highlighted by pale white painted roses. Bricks in fireplace were painted red.

In addition to their own growing family of six children, William and Sally Merion gave homeless children a place to live as well. In a period when modern social agencies did not exist, children who had lost their parents to disease or misfortune often had no place to go.

No child was ever turned away from the Merion farm.

One of Sally Merion’s daughters, Emily Stewart, later described what life was like on the farm. “Everyone who worked on the farm at that time expected to be boarded and lodged. The school teacher boarded around. There were no cooking stoves, sewing knitting or washing machines and even the plain washboard was not used here until about 1830. ... Every garment was made from the raw material. The wool of a hundred sheep was brought in at shearing time and Sally Merion had it washed, picked, carded, spun, scoured, dried, woven and made into flannel, jeans, linsey, blankets, coverlets and stocking yarn. Then it was made into clothing. ...The milk of fifteen cows was brought in twice a day to be made into butter and cheese.”

“The long winter evenings were occupied with sewing, knitting or spinning on the little wheel. ... The mail came once a month in early times and the postage, which was not prepaid, was twenty-five cents for each letter.”

William Merion died in 1837. Sally Merion survived him by almost twenty years until her death in 1856. It was a busy life but a good one.

Simulated grades provide example of new state report card

Dublin City Schools pulled seven A’s, one B and one C on the 2011-12 state report card, according to a simulation of a new state grading process released by the Ohio Department of Education last week.

Starting in August, the state report card will carry letter grades rather than ratings such as “excellent” or “continuous improvement” and the ODE last week released preliminary information about the new rating system.

In August 2013, the state report card will give districts and schools grades in nine different measures, but there will be no overall grades for districts or schools until 2015.

Two measurements, K-3 literacy and prepared for success, were not included on the simulation but will be included on the report card in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The simulations that are subject to change gave Dublin City School District an A in performance indicators, four-year graduation rate, five-year graduation rate, value added, value added for gifted students, value added for the lowest 20 percent of students and value added for students with disabilities.

For performance index, the district earned a B and in annual measurable objectives a C. “Generally I would say people need to be very careful in taking stake in simulations,” Superintendent David Axner said.

“This is a new scoring mechanism and what has happened is they released the way the scoring mechanism will work on data almost two years old now.”

Axner is anxious to see more recent scores plugged into the new ratings as well as some other details for the new system.

“There are categories we still haven’t seen how (grades) will be calculated,” he said.

“For annual measurable objectives, we’re still waiting to see the way that will be calculated. We’re more interested in dissecting the definition of each category.”

Some of the measurements being graded by the state with letter grades exist on the most current report card released early this year.

Performance indicators, for example, measure how many students score proficient or better on state tests. The performance index score measures how well every student does on state tests.

Value added measures how much students progress from year to year by all students and in different groups.

Annual measurable objectives, however, is new.

According to information from ODE, the measurement shows any gap in achievements between different student demographics.

With the release of simulation grades for districts across the state, ODE is hoping to gain feedback and Axner said Dublin is happy to give it.

The district also will focus on edu-

cating the community on the new measurements and grades.

“The other piece is we are trying to prepare the community as they need to understand we’re getting more curriculum and more rigorous testing system and the new reporting mechanism has raised the bar,” Axner said.

“With the performance index score, we got a B, but we had one of the highest (scores) in the state.”

With new, tougher measurements ahead, Axner is not expecting many top scores for districts across the state in August.

“There won’t be many A’s,” he said.

Student-run event helps battle against cancer

The first Putt Down Drive Out Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society run last year by the Coffman High School senior went well, but organizing the May 18 event this year has been done with ease.

Guthery and Jerome High School Junior Brady Bohl took over the golf fundraiser last year from Dublin graduates Scott Reed and Thomas Dunne who created the event in 2010.

“My grandma died from cancer,” Guthery. “It was a way to honor her.”

This year Guthery was on his own as Bohl’s hectic schedule forced him out of the event.

Last year served as a great learning experience, however, and prepared Guthery for organizing the event this year.

“It went unbelievably well,” he said of the 2012 fundraiser. “We had a gift bag and people didn’t expect that. We had some great sponsors.”

Cancer fundraiser drew 44 players and raised $6,015 for the American Cancer Society.

This year, Guthery is aiming for 72 players and $8,000. The money will be donated to the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life.

Not too many changes are in store for Putt Down Drive Out Cancer this year, Guthery said. The May 18 event will be a four-player team, 18-hole scramble with a 2:30 p.m. shotgun start.

“January through March last year we were just trying to get money so we could put on the tournament,” Guthery said.

“This year we had the money, so we could

get a start on prizes.”

Guthery has also gotten a start on training his replacements. He plans to be at Ohio State University this time next year, wrapping up his freshman year.

“I still want to be involved, but we need some new leadership,” he said, adding his brother, Ross Guthery, and friend, Ryan Turk, have stepped up to help out this year and learn the ropes.

With the home stretch nearing for Guthery’s final year at Coffman High School and the Putt Down Drive Out Cancer fundraiser, the senior is looking forward to an action-packed May. “I want to finish the year with something I’m passionate about,” Guthery said. “When I’m passionate about something I work hard,” he said. “I’m really excited.

“The event is right before the last week of school. Everything came so close together.”

Dublin City Schools are preparing online infrastructure for an upcoming state requirement.

The Dublin Board of Education last week approved a $99,500 purchase for a Sophos Unified Threat Management System that will provide the district with better network security, an improved web filter and network routing capabilities.

The new system will help the district prepare for state tests that will soon be given online, said Mike Voss, the district’s chief technology officer.

“We will have to dedicate an amount of bandwidth for the test,” he said. “We need network bandwidth for that.”

“We’re actually capturing space so our students and testing isn’t interrupted,” Superintendent David Axner told the ThisWeek Dublin Villager.

“Everything else from email to things going on in the infrastructure, this will be a separate roadway for them.”

Online state testing is coming, although next year the state is giving districts the option of doing state testing on paper.

Axner isn’t sure how soon online tests will be administered statewide.

“Some districts still don’t have the infrastructure to do that,” Axner said.

“Some are still struggling to get internet in the building,” he said. “We take that for granted ... . We will be ready, but other districts will struggle to get kids on computers.”

Along with preparing the district for upcoming online testing, the new system will allow students access to more things online.

The current web filter can either block all content on

YouTube or none of it,Voss said.

“This can allow purely educational things through, while still blocking inappropriate things,” he said.

The new system will also provide more security for student records.

“It helps out with a lot of different pieces,”Voss said. “It will consolidate things and make for better ease of management.”

Other matters

In other district news, Jerome High School Head Athletic Trainer Ric Fail and Bailey ElementaryTeacher Mandy Reutzel were honored with the Golden Shamrock Award.

“Ric truly cares. That’s the theme from student athletes,” said Cathy Sankey, Jerome principal.

“He’s like a coach and counselor to injured students,” Sankey said.

Bailey Principal Garilee Ogden said Reutzel is a leader and cares for students.

“She develops amazing relationships with her students,” she said.

The district also recognized Doug Baker, coordinator of public information, for four awards from the Ohio School Public Relations Association.

Baker snagged the Mark of Distinction Award for district articles and three Mark of Excellence awards for a special purpose publication, three-year strategic plan and print newsletter Dublin City Schools Today.

Seven retiring staff members were also recognized. Bailey teacher Jo Ann Gentile, Chapman teacher Elizabeth Myers, Jerome High School teacher Christopher Bolles, bus driver Terry Shinnick and Davis Middle School teachers Virginia Kirk, Rachel Mushrush and Robert Stoll were all recognized for their service to the district.

CAS program offers Coffman students a well-rounded educational experience

By JENNIFER NOBLIT THISWEEKNEWS.COM The International Baccalaureate program can put a major focus on academics, but CAS ensures students a well-rounded educational experience.

CAS – Creativity,Action and Service – is part of the IB Diploma program at Coffman High School and allows students a respite from challenging academics.

The program doesn’t come free of challenges however, and provokes students to get involved with arts, help others and work physically to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Students were set to show off the lessons learned through the CAS portion of the IB Diploma program with art, music, presentations and food at a fair Wednesday, April 17.

Junior Jack Wills focused on the action portion of CAS for the fair. He participated in the Dublin Crew rowing team and said it helped him reach for excellence.

“IB classes are pretty strenuous,’Emily Lynch said. “Activities help you forget about other things in life.You can get away and relax.”

Part of this year’s program reflection was about the holo-

caust. Students created butterflies for the butterfly project at the Holocaust Museum in Houston. The students contributed to the museum’s effort to collect 1.5 million handmade butterflies to represent the 1.5 million children who died during the holocaust.

“We added our own personal touch (to the butterflies),” Lynch said. “One person made theirs out of wood. It was nice to see personality on the artwork.”

Students were also asked to reflect about people who have had a significant impact on their life after reading the book Tuesdays with Morrie.

One of the five tributes Eunice Kwak completed was for her parents.

“I chose my parents and family and I thank them for everything they’ve done for me,” she said.

“It was a good book,” Mona Shafiq said. “It taught us how we should appreciate what we’ve had. We don’t look back at how others have given to us very much.”

Reflection was a large part of the program as students must reflect on their activities and write down how they feel.

“You really have to think about it,” Pranav Pamidigantam said. “I volunteer at the hos-

pital and I have to really think about how I feel when I’m there.

That’s the most hard part.”

For service, students also participated in the African Library Project and helped collect 1,000 books and $500 to open a library in Ghana, Africa. Other service projects took a group of students to Wright Elementary to help out with students.

“A group of us go to Wright Elementary every Friday and do an activity with the kids,” Eleni Christofides said. “That’s been one of my favorite things to do. They call us their high school friends.”

Samira Yusuf volunteers at Riverside Hospital discharging patients and said the experience has helped her appreciate life more.

“I hear interesting stories.

One lady who had a stroke was in the hospital for a month,” Yusuf said. “She was so excited to leave.”

As Dublin high schools decreased the school day from eight periods to seven, CAS could not fit into the schedule, so students had to carve out time from their own schedules.

The extra effort was worth it, Maddie Conway said.

“We’re just becoming better people by accepting other people and accepting ourselves and

making us better,” she said. “It makes us whole as a person.”

Yshan Sethi said the program helped him step outside his usual interests.

“I think a big part of CAS is being well-rounded,” he said.

“I’m a big music guy, but this opened me up to be more active.”

A proposed development could bring 45 new homes to Dublin’s south side near Ballantrae.

Dublin City Council members last week heard the first reading of a rezoning and preliminary development plan for the 26.5-acre Links at Ballantrae development.

The potential subdivision, bordered by Rings Road to the south, Washington Elementary School and Northwest Chapel Grace Brethen to the east, Ballantrae to the north and Woods of Ballantrae to the west, needs a rezoning from rural and restricted suburban residential district to planned unit development.

Planner Claudia Husak said the 45-home development

would have about 7.08 acres of open space and have a density of 1.7 units per acre.

Dublin would maintain about five acres of the open space which includes a centrally located one-acre park, Husak said.

The development would have access to the north at Marmion Drive and off the future Rings-Cosgray Road connector at the southwest corner of the development.

A bikepath connection is also planned to Hilliard’s Washington Elementary School, which borders the eastern section of the development.

A family that owns land to the southwest of the proposed development has expressed concerns regarding the location of the south entrance, but Husak said the developer has moved the road and offered landscaping.

“The staff and applicant have been working with us,” resident David Patch said, adding he would like landscaping to buffer his residence from the future Rings-Cosgray Road connector.

The subdivision plans to offer several residences with three-car garages and Councilman John Reiner questioned the feasibility.

Ben Hale, the attorney representing developer M.I. Homes, said the lots in the proposed development have enough room for three-car garages and the market is expected to support them.

“I guarantee at least half will have that,” he said. “The market will demand it.”

The residences in the proposed development will have brick, stone, stucco and wood siding in natural earthtones and warm neutral colors, the staff report to council said. The plan also requires half of the homes to have side-loading garages.

Council is expected to vote on the development at an April 22 meeting.

and then move forward with moving (the monument) to a park-like setting away from the road,” Merkle said. “It will give visitors a chance to visit it without cars whizzing by about five feet away.”

Columbus Art Memorial dismantled the 20-foot high monument last week and took it to its facility for restoration.

In the meantime, Jerome Township will work to ready the site for the monument.

“It’ll be three or four months until the site work is done and foundation is poured for the monument,” Merkle said.

When the monument was pulled apart by Columbus Art Memorial, it was expected that a time capsule put in the memorial in 1913 would be uncovered.

Nothing was found, though.

“The lid had never been sealed on,” he said. “There was nothing of any retrievable use to speak of.”

The monument itself holds a great deal of history for the area, though.

“The unique thing about the monument is it came out of a catalogue in 1913 and cost $1,500,” Merkle said. “Mr. (Samuel) Woodburn left $250 to the trustees and they had to double that and erect a monument.

“Col. (William L.) Curry was a veteran of the Civil War and spearheaded the effort,” he added. “They raised $1,500 to erect the monument.”

The monument includes the names of local soldiers from wars up to the Spanish-American War, but the lion’s share were from the Civil War. “There were more soldiers in Jerome Township per capita in the Civil War than any other township,” Merkle said. “When

Abraham Lincoln issued a call for volunteers, the minister of the New California church held a meeting ... Forty men stepped forward that day.”

Jerome Township trustees are hoping to add names of veterans since the Spanish-American War to the monument area, Merkle said.

A rededication for the monument is anticipated for October, but final touches on the park surrounding it will take a bit longer.

“The park is a three-year project,” Merkle said. “Phase one this year is to establish an area for the monument and get it moved. Down the line, we’ll work on a parking lot and walking trail around the park and plaques.”

According to police reports, the company recovered emails from a former employee talking about a bomb.

Mentions of slashing tires also were found on the former employee’s Facebook page.

Police found no signs of a bomb at the company.

• A resident of the 7500 block of Bristol Drive reported hearing breaking glass between 8 and 8:10 p.m. April 6.

The man could not find the source, but his wife later found a window upstairs broken from what she believed was a bullet.

When police responded they found a pellet from a BB gun in the room.

• A man reported his wallet missing after going to the bank and a business at 7600 block of Sawmill Road between 12:45 and 1:15 p.m. April 3.

The man said his wallet contained $460, credit cards and other items, and was unsure where it could have fallen out of his pocket.

• A woman reported a miss-

ing purse after she accidentally knocked her purse out of her car between 7 and 7:20 a.m.

April 3 in the parking lot of a business in the 300 block of est Bridge Street.

The woman told police she called businesses in the block, but no one had turned in the purse.

• A Dublin man was arrested when police responded to a report of domestic violence in the 100 block of Blakeford Drive April 7.

A juvenile was punched in the eye between 5:40 and 5:46 p.m. after he threatened to beat up the man and pushed him.

The juvenile reported that the man was yelling at another adult at the residence.

City seeks ARB applicants

Dublin City Council is seeking two people to sit on the Architectural Review Board.

The advisory board meets about twice a month and needs an applicant who lives in the historic district for a one-year

term and another who operates a business or owns commercial property in Historic Dublin for a three-year term.

All applicants must be registered voters.
