Coffman weapons concern Davidson

Celtics’ three captains, along with seniors Maddy Ireton and Keemia Rashidi, and attends games and practices to provide support and guidance for her teammates. “That is huge for character,” coach Neal Shaffer said of Costner remaining with the team. “It shows that she’s not only in the sport for herself, she’s in it for all the people around her, too, and that just speaks wonders.” After six to nine months of recovery and physical therapy, Costner plans to resume her career with the Ohio Premier Eagles in the spring in preparation for playing at the Division I col-

Coach Mark Crabtree expects to see a familiar opponent when his Dublin Coffman High School football team plays host to Hilliard Davidson on Friday, Sept. 19, in the OCC-Central Division opener for both teams. According to Davidson coach Brian White, the Wildcats will be facing a different Shamrocks squad. “I think this Coffman team is a little more explosive than in the past few years,” said White, whose team is 10-3 against Coffman over the past 10 seasons, including 3-0 in the Division I playoffs. “Most of the time, they have one great (receiver) and couple of good ones and a couple of average ones, but this year they have a lot of weapons. They have a lot of good receivers, more than before. “They aren’t overly big kids, but they catch the ball, they are extremely fast and do a great job of blocking for each other.” The Shamrocks improved to 3-0 with a 48-0 win over Canton McKinley on Sept. 12. Wide receiver Kyle Marcinick caught three passes for 72 yards and a touchdown and wide receiver Shaun Rankin had two receptions for 62 yards and a score. Two other wide receivers, C.J. Saunders (four catches for 64 yards) and Chase Granlund (two catches for 40 yards), also had multiple receptions. Quarterback Gunnar Hoak completed 12 of 18 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 58 yards and a score on three carries.

Costner gains new perspective

Jerome senior remains part of team despite missing entire season with knee injury

By FRANK DiRENNA THISWEEKSPORTS.COM

Having earned first-team all-state honors in Division I last season, Madison Costner aspired to lead the Dublin Jerome High School girls soccer team deep into the postseason this fall. Those hopes were dashed, however, when the senior forward sustained a season-ending knee injury while playing for the Ohio Premier Eagles U19 elite team in a national club tournament in Redmond, Wash., on June 26. Costner usually plays for the Ohio

Premier Eagles U17 elite team, but was added to the roster of the U19 squad because it was shorthanded that week. The injury occurred when Costner collided with the opposing goalkeeper. Medical personnel at the tournament told her that the injury didn’t appear to be serious, but she had her left knee re-evaluated upon returning to Columbus and learned that she had torn her ACL, thus ending her high school career. “I knew I had to stay positive and it is what it is,” said Costner, who underwent surgery to repair the knee

in July. “I just have to get through it. I want to stay around the team because I’ve been a part of (the Jerome program) for three years and didn’t want to just give up on my last season. I wanted to stick around and help like a coach. I love the team. I love the players on the team and it’s good for me to see the game from a different perspective.” Costner, who has committed to play for Central Michigan University, had 24 goals and 17 assists last season. In addition to making all-state, she was named first-team all-district and the OCC-Cardinal Division Player of the Year. Despite not being able to play this season, Costner was voted one of the
