Jerome retains Emerald Cup

A rough stretch at midseason didn’t get in the way of one of the Dublin Jerome High School boys lacrosse team’s annual goals this year. The Celtics beat Scioto 17-0 on April 17 and built a 7-0 lead on the way to defeating Coffman 13-7 on May 15 to secure its ninth consecutive Emerald Cup trophy in the series between the three Dublin programs. From April 19-30, Jerome lost four of five, and it also lost to Cincinnati St. Xavier 8-7 on May 11 in the game before facing Coffman. “We’ve bounced back from a couple losses,” said junior attacker Mikey Bano, whose team is 12-6. “In the first half we jumped all over (Coffman).” Bano, who is the brother of 2012 graduate Joe Bano and has verbally committed to St. Joseph’s, scored five goals against the Shamrocks. Jerome lost to Buffalo (N.Y.) Timon St. Jude 19-9 in the North American Lacrosse Festival on May 18 at Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) Brother Rice but beat Cincinnati Moeller 7-5 the next day in

the event. The Celtics enter the Division I Northwest Region tournament having given up 10 or more goals just five times this season. “I think we’ve started to patch everything up and have been learning from each game,” junior close defenseman J.B. Smith said. “There was big pressure this year because we never want to be that team to lose (the Emerald Cup).” Jerome earned the top seed in the Northwest Region and opens the postseason Saturday, May 25, at home against Whitehouse Anthony Wayne or Scioto. The winner plays Sylvania Southview, Toledo St. John’s or Westlake in a regional semifinal Wednesday, May 29. The regional final is June 1. Olentangy, the second seed in the Northwest, lost to Jerome 13-5 on April 5. “I felt like we played a great first half (against Coffman) but we made some mistakes that we have to tighten up,” coach A.J. Auld said. “(Mikey Bano is) a very good player, a very tough player. It doesn’t hurt to have an older brother who played lacrosse.

Coach Greg King had the OCC-Central Division meet mapped out for his Dublin Coffman High School girls track and field team. He had an idea of which teams would be in the top three after the meet concluded May 18 at Thomas Worthington, but he wasn’t sure of the order. His Shamrocks ended up finishing a close second (140) to Hilliard Davidson (141.5), with Olentangy Liberty taking third (110). “We had the sprints and Davidson had the distance and Liberty was between the two of us,” King said. “I knew it was going to be a tough meet no matter what, and that helps get us ready for district.” Upper Arlington was fourth (97), followed byThomas (79.5), Central Crossing (49), Marysville (36) and Westland (9). Junior Beatrice Hannan won the 100 meters (12.55 seconds) and 200 (25.74) and was a member of the first-place 800 relay (1:43.41) with seniors Rylee Axner, Kaylee Taylor and McKenzie Bailey. Sophomore Oyesade Olatoye won the shot put (42 feet, 1/2 inch) and discus (138-0), Taylor won the 400 (59.02) and senior Emily Mangelson was second in the 300 hurdles (47.1) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.16). The third-place 400 relay (51.38) consisted of freshman Shannon Downie, senior Emily Barber, junior Sarah Handy and Axner. The fourth-place 3,200
