5 questions to ask yourself before signing on the dotted line (BPT) — It’s that time again — time to buy a new car. Maybe you’re excited because you’ve been dreaming of getting new wheels for a long time now.

Or maybe you’re nervous; buying a car is a big financial commitment, and you want to make sure you do your homework. If you fall into this second group, don’t worry; these five simple questions can help you find a vehicle that fits your lifestyle. s )S IT A LEMON When you purchase your vehicle, the last thing you want to do is shop for another car in a couple of years. Picking a reliable vehicle is key.

So how do you do it? Make a list of the vehicles you’re interested in and head to the Web to research previous vehicle recalls. If you are buying a used car, websites like CarFax.com and others can also show you the history of that particular car, giving you insight into

just how reliable it will be.

s 7HERE S THE VALUE Whether safety is your top concern or you want the most vehicle for your money, it’s all about value.

USAA, which provides car-buying guidance and recommendations to its members, released its fourth-annual Best Value list identifying the top vehicles for 2014.

The list includes vehicles that finished at the top of USAA’s preferred propriety rating system, which evaluates safety, reliability, cost and other factors.

There is also a list of the top 10 vehicles for teens, which you can review if you’ll soon be sharing a garage with a new driver.

Value can also exist in the miles per gallon a buyer will get with the vehicle.

“We do hear about fuel economy” when car buyers are looking, said Jimmy Snyder, general manager for Dan Tobin Buick GMC. “We don’t see a lot of volume in those types of vehicles, but there are people who migrate toward them.” See which cars have the best and worst fuel economy on the U.S. Department of

Think about yourself and who will most often ride with you. If you or your passengers are very tall, a smaller sedan may not make sense.

“People are really getting something that fits their budgets and their needs,” Snyder said. “That is why crossovers are doing so well. It’s not a van and not a sedan, but has the versatility of driving like a car.”

s 7ILL IT GROW WITH YOUR FAMILY Sure it fits your needs now, but what about next year? The year after that?

Whether it is children, pets or joining the office carpool, consider the fact that the space you need presently might not be the space you need even a year from now.

Another option for ensuring your car can meet your future needs is to lease your vehicle. “We’re seeing a real big jump in leasing because you can get more car for less dollar, and people can keep on refreshing their car,” Snyder said, adding that 52 to58 percent of shoppers are leasing from them in any given month.

Shopping for a new car can be an exciting experience, but it can be nervewracking as well. As you begin your search, remember these questions and you’ll be closer to finding the vehicle of your dreams.

USAA Preferred Best Value vehicles are typically those vehicles ranked highest in each vehicle category and obtain either the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and represent vehicles which are determined to be the best financial value using a USAA-developed proprietary statistical model.

The model relates MSRP to vehicle features (engine type, drivetrain, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, number of airbags, transmission, body additions, curb weight, horsepower-tocurb weight, height and vehicle category), fuel economy, insurance cost, additional warranty cost, depreciation, and IIHS Top Safety Pick to determine the value. In providing this analysis, USAA does not consider factors other than those disclosed.

The vehicles evaluated for USAA’s Top 10 for Teens list first had to be a USAA Preferred vehicle and have an MSRP below $26,000. "ETTER FUEL ECONOMY GETS THE GREEN LIGHT

BY CAROLYN DIX THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Buyers have several options when it comes to purchasing a vehicle. Leather seats? Yes. Wi-Fi? Sounds good. What about the latest and greatest safety features? Absolutely.

But there is another feature to consider when you are in the market for a new car — better fuel economy. It may not be the most glamorous option, but it will save you money and help the environment to boot.

Cars with better fuel economy get more mpg of gas, and they also happen to be greener — more eco-friendly — vehicles.

Better fuel economy means fewer trips to the pump, and burning through less gas translates to lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Rising fuel prices have created a

growing demand for cars with better fuel economy, and the market has delivered.

“Consumers have more choices than ever when shopping for vehicles with higher fuel economy and lower

tailpipe CO2 emissions,” according to a report* by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The U.S. government has also played a role in increasing the number of fuelefficient cars available to the consumer.

In 2007, Congress raised the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, setting tougher fuel-economy and carbonemissions standards for car manufacturers. The Obama administration raised those standards even higher.

So, just how are cars becoming more efficient and better for the environment? Electric vehicles and hybrids, innovation in conventional cars, alternative fuels and lighter-weight materials are all playing a part in creating more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Charge it: The buzz around electric cars and hybrids

BY CAROLYN DIX THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH “Charge it” has taken on a different meaning at Easton Town Center.

Look around, and you might notice security guards patrolling the streets in electric smart cars.

Search for a parking spot on a busy Saturday afternoon, and you might find yourself looking longingly at the row of Tesla chargingstation parking spots in the west garage.

Of course, having a designated parking area where you can recharge your car while you shop is not the only perk to driving an electric car.

Electric cars and hybrid vehicles are eco-friendly automotive options for car buyers. Unlike conventional vehicles that run solely on gasoline, electric vehicles run on batteries, while hybrids provide the option for either regular gasoline or an electric charge.

“The market is still very small, but it is a growing market,” said Matt Bonanno, general manager for Jim Keim Ford. The Ford Fusion is the most popular Ford hybrid, he said.

Hybrids are more efficient because they are “dividing up the task of running a vehicle” between gasoline and electricity, said Giorgio Rizzoni, director of The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research.

Having the option to run on electricity means you will not have to fill up your tank as often, reducing carbon emissions and increasing fuel economy.

If you are in the market for a hybrid, take note that the sticker prices are higher than they are for the same nonhybrid vehicle model.

The reason: “A hybrid is more expensive for a manufacturer to make,” Rizzoni said, noting there are more pieces and parts that have to go into a hybrid to run both ways.

However, Bonanno said hybrid vehicles are less expensive than electric vehicles, and they have a shorter payback period.

The payback period is the number of years it will take to recoup your investment.

When it comes time to choose, you have to decide whether you will save enough money on fuel to make up for the higher upfront cost you pay for a hybrid.

You can estimate the payback period for any hybrid based on your driving habits using the U.S. Department of Energy’s website fueleconomy.gov.

Unlike hybrids, fully electric vehicles run on battery alone. The electric smart car has a 17.5 kilo-

watt lithium-ion battery that can go about 70 miles on a full charge, said Eric Gray, sales manager at smart center Easton.

It can be plugged into a regular 110-volt outlet and takes about six to eight hours to fully charge. Have your garage wired for a 240-volt outlet (what your clothes dryer uses), and you car will be fully charged in just four to five hours.

While electric cars may be the pricier option upfront, there is a tax credit of up to $7,500 for electric car

purchases, Gray said. And, instead of spending money on gas, electriccar drivers are spending about $1 of electricity a day to charge up — without the carbon emissions.

Are battery-powered vehicles the future of automotive? Rizzoni said one day he thinks all vehicles could be hybrid. Then perhaps we can pull the plug on conventional gasoline vehicles.

Alternative fuels get behind the wheel

BY CAROLYN DIX THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH According to the U.S Department of Transportation, in 2011 there were approximately 240 million registered vehicles in the United States.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported there were a little more than 11 million vehicles using alternative fuels that same year.

Most Americans still fill their gas tanks with petroleum-based gasoline — it’s the fuel we are all used to.

But for many concerned about the environment, the popularity of our everyday gas is running on fumes.

Petroleum is a fossil fuel, and burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

“The Energy Information Association shows clearly that 30 percent of carbon dioxide emissions come from the transportation sector,” said Giorgio Rizzoni, director of The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research.

But that is not the only reason

there are concerns over petroleumbased fuel. “It is bad for the economy to be so dependent on a single energy source,” said Sam Spofforth, executive director for Clean Fuels Ohio.

Spofforth added it is also a security issue. “Very little petroleum is made here. We are exporting wealth out of Ohio and the USA to countries that don’t like us.”

So, what is the alternative for Ohioans who love to hit the open road in their cars, or at least use them to drive to work? “There are a wide range of energy resources created right here in Ohio,” Spofforth assured, and these alternative fuels can get you where you want to go.

BIODIESEL Biodiesel is an alternative fuel produced most commonly from soybeans, Spofforth said, adding that Ohio grows a lot of soybeans, making it an Ohio-renewable product.

Biodiesel has similar characteristics to petroleum diesel, so biodiesel can be blended with it and used in

any car that runs on diesel, he said.

NATURAL GAS “Most people are familiar with natural gas,” Spofforth said, because people use it to heat their homes and cook.

To get enough energy to operate a car, natural gas is usually found in a compressed form as opposed to a liquid, but it is measured as GGE — gasoline gallon equivalent.

Several fleets use natural gas because of how much cheaper it is — 30 to 70 percent cheaper, according to Clean Fuels Ohio (cleanfuelsohio.org).

Natural gas vehicles come with a higher price tag, and it can also be costly to convert to a natural gas tank, but there are government grants and incentives for fleets to switch to natural gas.

As a result, it has seen a tremendous amount of growth in Ohio, Spofforth said.

PROPANE Propane may be familiar from grilling, Spofforth said, but it is

referred to as propane “autogas” when used for your car. According to the Clean Fuels Ohio website, propane is domestically produced and cheaper than regular gasoline.

Some Ohio school buses are using propane, and “In Columbus, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities runs propane buses,” Spofforth said.

ETHANOL You may not realize it, but “people are using a 10 percent blend of ethanol at most gas stations already,” Spofforth said, adding that the blends can go up to 85 percent ethanol (E85).

Ethanol can be used in flexiblefuel vehicles (FFV), and according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), more than 100 FFV models are available.

For example, there are FFV models of the 2014 Ford Focus, the 2014 Dodge Dart, the 2015 GMC Terrain and the 2015 Audi A4 quattro, just to name a few.

Start your engines: regular cars go the distance Gasoline direct injection and variable valve timing helping to make engines more efficient

BY CAROLYN DIX THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Electric cars and hybrids certainly have their perks, but these vehicles are not necessarily right for everyone.

If you park on the street and have no garage to plug into, an electric car might not be for you.

If the upfront cost of a hybrid proves to be a budget buster, a hybrid might not be in the cards yet, either.

So are you doomed to higher carbon emissions and being on a first-name basis with the gas clerk?

Absolutely not.

According to a report* by the Environmental Protection Agency, technology has increased the number of options available for conventional gasoline vehicles to be more efficient.

This means you can still buy your regular petroleum gas-powered car and have better fuel economy and lower carbon emissions.

In fact, the report stated, “Technological innovation is a major driving force behind the recent improvements in CO2 emissions and fuel economy, and the majority of the carbon and oil savings from current vehicles is due to new gasoline vehicle technologies.”

When it comes to conventional vehicles, “Fuel economy continues to improve with the internal combustion engine,” said Matt Bonanno, general manager for Jim Keim Ford.

“We are learning how to control the processes of the combustion engine,” creating engines with more power that use less energy, said Giorgio Rizzoni, director of The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research (OSU CAR).

One such innovation is gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. GDI engines allow the fuel to go directly to the combustion chamber.

Engines without GDI get the fuel to the combustion chamber in a more indirect way, and this less-efficient method results in wasted energy — burning through more fuel unnecessarily. That means releasing more carbon dioxide into the air and shelling out more of your hard-earned cash at the gas pump.

Variable valve timing is another technological advance making internal combustion engines more efficient. The valves control the air and exhaust going in and out of the combustion chamber.

By changing the timing of these valves and how long they stay open, the engine is able to run more efficiently.

Jimmy Snyder, general manager at Dan Tobin Buick GMC, said active fuel management also plays a role in better fuel economy.

This allows the engine to deacti-

vate four of the eight cylinders based on load and power needs, using less energy and increasing fuel economy.

“GM is leading in V-8 engine fuel economy with the GMC Sierra,” Snyder said. The Sierra uses GDI, variable valve timing and active fuel management to give it an EPAestimated 23 mpg on the highway.

Engine start/stop (ESS) technology is yet another way cars are running more efficiently.

“The engine shuts off when you come to a complete stop,” Bonanno said. “You’re not wasting precious fuel.” Although this feature has been

found in hybrids for years, he said it is becoming more common in conventional vehicles.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, do not count the conventional vehicle out just yet. Cars are losing weight to gain fuel economy

BY CAROLYN DIX THECOLUMBUS DISPATCH Car manufacturers are exploring ways to give their vehicles better fuel economy, and they are putting the pedal to the metal.

Aluminum metal, that is.

As car manufacturers steer their vehicles in a more fuel-efficient direction, one of the factors they are working with is vehicle weight.

In many cases that means replacing traditional materials with lighter-weight alternatives. The process is called “lightweighting,” according to industry experts.

Giorgio Rizzoni, director of The Ohio State University Center for Automotive

Research, said it comes down to simple physics — the more mass there is, the more energy is needed to make it move. The heavier the vehicle, the more energy (or gas) will be needed, therefore lowering its fuel economy.

According to a report* by the Environmental Protection Agency, “Vehicle weight and performance are two of the most important design parameters that help determine a vehicle’s CO2 emissions and fuel economy.”

The report also said that all other factors being equal, a vehicle that weighs more and has a faster zero-to-60 acceleration would have

higher carbon emissions and lower fuel economy.

If car manufacturers want more eco-friendly cars with higher fuel economy, they need to use materials that are lighter weight but still meet the strict U.S. safety standards, Rizzoni said.

Aluminum is just one lightweight material that car manufacturers are looking to as an alternative to cast iron or steel, he said.

The 2015 Ford F-150 has high-strength aluminum body panels, said Mike Bonanno, general manager for Jim Keim Ford. “It reduced the weight of the truck by 700 pounds,” he said.

But aluminum is not the only material car shoppers will start seeing in their vehicles to make them lighter and more fuel-efficient.

“You’ll be surprised by how much plastic is in a car,” Rizzoni said.

Where car manufacturers once used steel, some are starting to use plastic as a lighter alternative, he said.

Many components of cars, such as the headlights, are created out of plastic.

Eric Gray, sales manager for smart center Easton, said the side panels of smart cars are made of plastic. In fact, the entire car is 85 percent recyclable (doing double eco-friendly duty). Between

its small size and its lighter weight components, Gray said the smart car is much more efficient, weighing in at just 1,800 pounds.

Plastic and aluminum are good options for lightweighting cars, but Rizzoni said these are the obvious ways.
