Clintonville-based writer Wolfgang Parker has written Crime Cats, a children’s book series set in south Clintonville and featuring the community’s real-life felines. The project began as a creative gift for his 18 nieces and nephews but, said Parker, “Over the nine months I worked on it, I had found the book had grown into a full-fledged celebration of Clintonville, and I knew I wanted to share it with everyone.”

Playtime is the main character

Started by a mother-daughter team with teaching and school psychology backgrounds, the store (located at 13 E. College Ave.) emphasizes the importance of play in product — from lifelike puppets to toys for children who are blind — and in design. Visiting kids can climb an indoor treehouse or play dress-up while their parents shop.

Older kids will want to play at Game U, a video-game-making school that opened in July in Powell (9926 Brewster Lane). The business was started by Mike Kawas, a father of two with nearly two decades of experience working in the gaming industry (among

other titles, he was an art director at LucasArts and Activision). Game U is an after-school program, and its curriculum is composed of game design, 3-D modeling, programming, illustration, creative writing and more. Check out the class schedule at Game-U.com.

Does Dad need a break? Check out the meet-up group Columbus Dads, which is part of a national fathersupport organization called City Dads.

Life-Hack This

I don’t like personality tests. I don’t know if MyersBriggs would label me an ISFP or an ESTJ or a TGIF. Nor do I want to know. I’m suspicious of attempts to reduce complex concepts or topics — much less a person — into bite-size descriptions, devoid of nuance.

One of the biggest arguments I ever had with my wife, Kate, was over a website. It was toward the end of college, and though we weren’t yet engaged, we were knowingly headed in that direction. Many question marks still loomed, though, particularly regarding where we would begin our post-college life as a couple.

Kate loved the idea of a site that could, after processing the results of a brief survey, pro-

vide a list of cities best suited to your likes and dislikes.

I, however, did not love the idea. I found the concept of a stupid website’s stupid algorithms playing any role in my future location offensive. It was admittedly a little ridiculous to get worked up over it, but I nonetheless refused to participate. By the end of the debate, I had broken a set of car keys after launching them across the parking lot.

Needless to say, I have never taken a BuzzFeed quiz to determine which character I am from Saved by the Bell. It’s only after much consternation and trepidation that I reluctantly publish an annual list of my favorite albums. And when it comes to parenting, I refuse

to read the “10 Scientific Tips for Raising Happy Kids” or “5 Ways to Raise a Grateful Child” or — get this — “How to Raise a Child: 23 Steps (with Pictures).” The intro for that last one states, “If you want to know how to raise a child, follow these steps.” Sigh.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from seven years of parenting, it’s that family life is full of variation and nuance.

Even within one family unit, the pace and character of life changes drastically as kids move from one stage to the next. The ways in which one parents necessarily varies from year to year, family to family, child to child.

While there’s certainly value in gleaning wisdom from

other parents who have been through similar experiences, there are no shortcuts. Twitter offers hundreds of accounts with some variation of “Life Hacks” in the handle, as if life is something we have the power to short-circuit. Family life and parenting can’t be hacked.

So much of my own parenting is unfortunately dependent not on my kids but on everything else life invokes.

For example, if the basement floods and the carpet has to be ripped up and furniture is now displaced throughout the house, then the potential solutions to these problems will occupy much of my brain space. A predicament like that will inevitably affect the way I parent — particularly my time, focus and patience.

Not long ago, I had an early breakfast meeting that required me to leave the house before the kids awoke. It was dark. I was tired, grumpy. But

two hours later, I returned home caffeinated, fed and fully awake. In that state of mind, my kids were magically transformed from loud, needy obstacles into hilarious, wideeyed munchkins. If a dad ever asks me for my best parenting hack, I’ll just tell him to keep his blood-sugar level up and to stay adequately caffeinated.

Everything else will fall into place as you attempt to love your kids in all the disparate ways they require.

LITTLE WRITER: THE TRACING APP FOR KIDS Not to brag, but I have witnessed my 3-year-old writing her name. It’s true! With Little Writer: The Tracing App for Kids, my daughter practices forming letters, numbers, shapes and words by using easy tracing techniques and positive reinforcement. s someone whose job includes trying new restaurants, “childfriendly” restaurants are a well-understood concept — they provide a range of elements to keep a child happy and occupied during a meal. If you’re dining out with a child old enough to appreciate coloring mats, crayons, kid-friendly menus and the like, childfriendly restaurants can be a wonderful thing.

“Baby-friendliness,” however, hadn’t really occurred to me before I recently became a mother. Doing the job I do, while having my daughter during a drawn-out kitchen remodel, changed that quickly.

I came to realize that babyfriendliness is an entirely separate category, and I’ve learned that restaurants that provide it can have a profound effect on the enjoyment of dining out with an infant.

NAPPY TIME

We all wish diaper changes could wait until we get home, but they often can’t. Many new parents have had the experience of changing their wriggling infant on the floor of a restroom or in the back of their car.

It’s not fun.

Baby-friendly restaurants provide dedicated changing tables. Bonus points for making them accessible to dads, too. John Angelo, father of Amelie, told me, “As hard as it is to find a restaurant with a changing table, it’s five times as hard to find a changing table for a child in a men’s restroom. Society doesn’t really get that dads could be in charge of changing a diaper.”

HAVE A SEAT

Babies under 6 months are too young for restaurant high chairs.

Restaurants that provide slings that can securely hold an infant in a car seat offer a safer option than the typical, precariously upside-down high chairs. Booths, if wide enough, can also be great for sliding in a

car seat, and are useful for discreet breastfeeding. Restaurants in walkable neighborhoods where the tables are spaced apart and allow room for strollers are helpful, too.

JUST GOOD BUSINESS

Northstar Café co-founder and mother of two Katy Malhame explained why her business puts an emphasis on catering to families with babies: “We feel honored that a lot of families bring their babies to Northstar for their first dining experience outside of their homes. We take special pleasure in giving parents an opportunity to get out and bring their babies.”

Asian restaurants in general also seem to share that sentiment. A large number of them offer changing tables and slings, including Sunflower, SanSu, Lucky Dragon, Hong Kong House, Edamame and Akai Hana. If you’re sufficiently adept with chopsticks, there’s an additional advantage — most Asian dishes are designed to be eaten with one hand, and using chopsticks while holding a baby is much easier than eating food that has to be cut with a knife and fork.

Serving Suggestions Here are a few of Bethia’s baby-friendly picks: Belle’s Bread (1168 Kenny Centre Mall, Columbus 43220, 614-451-7110, bellesbread.com) Belle’s Bread is a charming café that has an attractive changing table positioned outside the restroom accessible to both parents.

We’ve found it to be a baby-friendly lunch spot and there are always small children there. Car seats can be squeezed into the booths.

State St. (Downtown), Columbus 43215, 614-564-6565, marketsixtyfive.com) Located opposite the Statehouse with a shady patio and lots of inside booths, Market 65 is a great choice to eat when you’re enjoying Downtown parks or museums. Market 65 has changing tables in both the men’s and women’s restrooms, healthy salads and a bar.

Northstar Café (locations in the Short North, Beechwold and Easton Town Center, thenorthstarcafe.com) All of Northstar’s restaurants have babychanging stations in the women’s room, except in the Short North, where it’s only in the men’s room. They also have kids’ booster seats and high chairs in all the cafés. We were able to fit our stroller between tables with assistance from the helpful staff.

Hills Market Downtown (95 N. Grant Ave. (Discovery District), Columbus 43215, 614-702-7900, columbusfoodmarket.com) When you need to shop, eat and change the baby, Hills Market Downtown is the place to go.

Easily navigable with a stroller, changing tables in the men’s and women’s restrooms, and an eat-in inside area plus an outside patio.

When busy, it can be a little crowded for strollers so it’s best to go off-peak for more space. The back room is a good place to sit.

The Last Getaway Babymoons are just the ticket for many expecting parents

he Babymoon: One last hurrah for parents before the baby comes on board. It has become a novelty again for new parents-to-be, earning a place in the Parenting Rite of Passage Hall of Fame alongside other playfully titled traditions, such as “Chuggies and Huggies” or “Dad-chelor” parties.

Emily Glenn, a librarian at Ohio State University and mom of 1-year-old Julia, offers a simple babymoon planning strategy.

“Do as much as you can that you can only do without children,” she said, laughing.

For Emily and her husband, James Eaton, this meant a Mega Bus trip to Chicago full of quiet museum visits, uninterrupted fine dining, CrossFit classes and taxi rides (no bueno with a stroller in tow or without a car seat).

In addition to offering a chance to try a world-renowned 16-course meal at Alinea Restaurant, the trip offered respite from the natural onslaught of concerns a future mom can face at home.

“I was worried I’d have the mothering instincts of a hamster,” Emily said.

She didn’t, of course, but the couple’s babymoon marked a time of love, excitement and twoperson solitude before a big life change.

For many mothers in central Ohio, nesting — that wonderful instinct to prepare a perfect home for a new baby — is a luxury that life has not afforded them.

They may be immigrants who just moved to Columbus with little more than the clothes they arrived wearing.

They may be women who intended to work right up until delivery, but were put on bed rest. They may be victims of domestic violence who fled the homes where newborn supplies were left behind.

But every month, for the past 33 years, a dedicated group of volunteers does what it can to help prepare the nests that will nurture the babies these women deliver.

The layette program of the Christ Child Society is the cornerstone project of this faith-based organization. The national group dates from 1887, when a Washington, D.C. woman, Mary Merrick, rallied friends and family to make and distribute clothes for impoverished infants and children. The Columbus chapter of the organization, which now includes more than 40 chapters in 18 states, was founded in 1981.

Pat Reynolds has been involved with

the Columbus chapter since 2006. And on a Monday morning in the middle of every month, she and about a dozen other women gather in the basement of St. Timothy Catholic Church’s rectory in Upper Arlington to assemble the layettes that will be delivered to 17 hospitals and clinics throughout central Ohio.

By July, they have assembled 913 layettes for the year, putting them on target to create more than 1,800 in 2014. Each layette contains blankets made by the club members, onesies, sleepers, socks, a dozen diapers, a hardboard book and other basic supplies.

Each package also contains a prayer card pledging that the women who assembled the layette will keep the child in their prayers.

“It’s sort of unbelievable that we’re touching so many people’s lives,” Reynolds said, as she stocked a workstation with supplies that would soon be sorted into bags.

Debbie Perrin, the current chairwoman of the layette program, had set up four workstations that morning.

“When I started doing it,” Perrin said, “I was shocked to find out how many ladies are bringing their babies home

with nothing. And 12 diapers is going to last, what, a day and a half?”

A Post-It note on the wall above each station stated “38 Girls” or “39 Boys.”

By 10 a.m., the powdery scent of diapers spiced the air. The project runs on about $44,000 per year, most of it raised by the club at various fundraisers.

Six-year-old Alanna Stewart, there that morning with her mother, Roberta, was in charge of putting stickers on blankets and stacking wipes.

“We’re going to take these to the hospital for people who have babies,” she explained.

“It’s very rewarding,” Reynolds said.

“We get more out of it than we give.”

But she and Perrin also confessed to curiosity about who will receive the layettes. Sometimes they receive thankyou notes that give them a glimpse into these women’s lives. Occasionally the recipients participate in other programs the group sponsors, including a Kinder Women’s Care Center and a daycare center at St. Stephens Community House.

But the vast majority of these bags, tagged with pink or blue strips of tape, disappear into lives about which they know little.

Sally Sexton is a licensed social

worker in OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital’s obstetrics department. She and her four colleagues place the layette orders each month with the Christ Child Society. Sexton gets to know the stories behind these orders, and she also gets to see the difference they make in these women’s and babies’ lives.

“When I bring the bag in,” Sexton said, “it’s like Christmas. When they find out that everything in it is brand new, they’re thrilled and amazed.”

The reasons for these families’ needs are as unique as the babies themselves, Sexton said: There are the immigrants, the bed-ridden, the domestic-violence victims and many other women facing a wide range of economic challenges.

“It makes a big difference,” Sexton said of receiving the layettes. “Many times they’re shy about affirming they could use help. This adds a sense of security for going home and knowing they don’t have to scramble to find the basics.”

hen Sarah Lagrotteria’s daughter was an infant, the professional chef started thinking about her role in introducing foods to the youngster. She was intrigued by the opportunity to make baby food and help Marlowe, now almost 2, develop her palate.

“Introducing Marlowe to solids is one of my absolute favorite memories as both a chef and a mom,” she said. “I loved shopping the farmers market with her in mind, wondering what textures and flavors she would like. She always surprised me.”

For example, Lagrotteria said that beets, which strike her as more of an adult food, “were an immediate hit. That was a great reminder that babies come to food without any preconceived notions.”

The experience also showed Lagrotteria how important first foods can be in shaping a child’s relationship with food.

“My hope is that she’ll absorb the enthusiasm I feel cooking for her and that that will set her up for a lifetime of happy, healthy eating,” she said.

She has turned her knowledge into a class that she offers at The Seasoned Farmhouse, a cooking school and boutique in Clintonville.

Lagrotteria shared with Columbus Parent her recipes for sweet potato and beet purees, which she recommends serving together as a swirl.

Note: When introducing babies to new foods, it is important to feed them one thing at a time.

Do not serve a baby the swirled dish unless they have successfully eaten sweet potatoes and beets separately.

Beet and Sweet Potato Swirl Yields about 2 cups.

INGREDIENTS • 1 sweet potato, scrubbed • 1 bunch baby beets, about 1 pound, trimmed and scrubbed

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Sweet Potato Puree: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Prick the potato in several places and place on a small, foil-lined baking sheet.

3. Place it in the oven and bake until very tender, about 45-60 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool.

4. Peel the potato.

5. Puree the potato in the food processor until smooth, adding water, breast milk or formula to achieve the desired consistency. (The potato may become so tender in the oven that you may be able to puree it in a dish with a fork.)

6. Set puree aside.

3. Place the covered dish in the oven and bake until very tender, about 45-60 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let the beets cool.

4. Put the beets in the food processor and puree until smooth, adding a little liquid as necessary to achieve desired consistency.

For the Beet Puree: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

2. Place the beets in a small baking dish and add water to come ½-inch up the pan. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.

Creating the Swirl: 1. Store the two purees separately.

2. When ready to serve, pour into same container and swirl together lightly with a spoon.

DON’T: • add fat, salt or other seasonings to baby’s food.

• attempt to introduce solid foods to a hungry baby.

• make faces while feeding baby. Remain neutral and let the child form his or her own opinions.

• think you need special equipment to make your own baby food. All it takes is an oven, steamer basket and food processor.

Experts from Nationwide Children’s Hospital answer common questions about health and safety Q: I want to make sure I’m providing enough nutrition to my newborn, but I don’t know if I’m producing enough milk. Is it safe to use herbal supplements to help?

A: Providing babies with natural nutrients that are entirely beneficial to them through breastfeeding is one thing that mothers want to do right. However, some moms become worried that they are not doing enough for their babies through breastfeeding, which leads them to seek out help from as many Michelle Ross, different sources as they can find.

RD, LD, ALC, is One of those sources is galactagogues, which are suppleProgram Manager ments used to increase milk production in mothers. Many are for Clinical Nutrition herbal, including fenugreek, goat’s rue, milk thistle and paand Lactation paya. Some mothers worry they are not producing enough milk at Nationwide for their babies, and therefore they turn to these supplements Children’s Hospital in order to increase their milk production. As well-intended as these efforts may be, there are various problems that could occur from adding these supplements to your baby’s diet.

Some supplements can cause blood sugar issues in mothers, while prescribed medicines could cause depression or mood disorders in mothers, both of which are unhealthy for babies. A healthy mother does not need additional nutritional supplements.

If you are worried that your baby is not gaining enough weight, try feeding them more often or talk to a doctor or lactation consultant. Always consult your child’s pediatrician with concerns about your child’s health.

Rather than turning to supplements, a proven and important way to increase milk production is known as “kangaroo care.” This technique, which involves holding a baby skinto-skin for an extended period of time, not only increases milk production in mothers, but also strengthens the bond between parent and baby.

To do kangaroo care, mothers should:

Prepare yourself: Avoid wearing lotions and perfumes — they can irritate your baby’s breathing. Also, do not give kangaroo care if you have an unhealed rash or open wound.

Dress for the occasion: Wear a loose shirt or a jacket that closes. Skinto-skin contact is a vital part of kangaroo care, and loose clothing will help keep your baby warm.

Get comfortable: Kangaroo care lasts as long as one hour at a time to three or four hours. Go to the bathroom beforehand, use a foot stool, have liquids to drink and stay still. Avoid rocking and talking.

There are some rules, though. First, to qualify for either, both spouses in two-parent households have to earn income. Second, the children must be 13 or younger.

Should you opt for the flexible spending account, remember you have to use all the money within the time frame set by your plan, or you lose those dollars. And there’s no doubling up. If you’re married and you both work and have access to a dependent care flexible spending account, the family limit is $5,000, whether it’s all in one plan or split between two.

As of 2013, for families earning $40,000 or less, Ohio enacted an income tax credit for child-care expenses.

Families earning less than $20,000 earn a credit worth 100 percent of the qualifying childcare expenses claimed on their federal tax return.

The credit is 25 percent for families earning $20,000 to $40,000. The state credit, though, will only reduce taxes owed and will not result in a refund.

According to the nonprofit Childcare Aware organization, the average cost — per child — for child care in Ohio in 2013 was $6,919, a number that represents 34 percent of the average annual income of a single mother, or 9 percent of a married couple’s average annual income. It’s an expense that has grown faster than wages and inflation for the past decade.

There are ways to take some of the sting out of the price tag, though.

First, there is the federal dependent care tax credit.

Then, there are child-care flexible spending accounts. You can generally only use one, and the benefits of each vary based on income.

The flexible spending account allows you to set aside up to $5,000 tax-free each year to pay for child-care costs.

The money withheld is pre-tax dollars, meaning it is free from federal, state, Social Security and Medicare taxes.

The child-care tax credit reduces the federal taxes you owe, but does not reduce your state, Social Security or Medicare taxes. You can claim up

hen Michelle Miller decided to open the kid-oriented Brickz Art and Science Studio, she was drawn to Marysville.

“It’s an up-and-coming city. You see families out all the time,” said the mother of two. She likes the community’s family-friendly vibe and enjoys exposing children to art and science.

“You can’t live without art and science,” Miller said. “People do, but they miss out on a lot.”

Miller’s classes and drop-in art and science events are just one reason to visit Union County. During October, the area boasts several locations for pumpkin picking and fall fun. Leeds Farm in nearby Ostrander offers hay rides, ziplines, pedal carts and much more.

The Maize at Little Darby Creek in Milford Center features a corn maze, pumpkin patch, pumpkin launchers and more.

Children can pick their own apples, ride a barrel train and play in the hay barn at The Orchard & Co. in Plain City.

Throughout the year, numerous out-of-town visitors head to Plain City

to dine at Der Dutchman Restaurant and shop at its extensive gift shop, Carlisle Gifts.

Uptown Marysville has interesting shops, kid-friendly restaurants and great spots for dessert. Packrat Comics opened there in late summer.

The Marysville store, much like its sister shop in Hilliard, sells comics, games and other hip merchandise. Mill Creek Cycle & Skate sells bikes and skateboard, organizes bike rides and offers plenty of customer service. The Creative Foundations studio features art created by individuals with developmental disabilities. The artists are often at the studio and are eager to chat with visitors, said activities director Tiffany Bowen.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “You see so many different mediums.”

For more traditional gifts, Goodies Galore stocks candles, home décor and gift items.

The Ribbon Box, a wonderful bakery with delicious cupcakes, also features a fun gift shop with lots of lo-

cally made items like kids’ jewelry and super hero capes.

Other tasty dining options include Bagel Island, which serves antibiotic and hormone-free meats and organic produce, Farmhouse Ice Cream Parlor, which specializes in broasted chicken and ice cream, and Hinkley’s, a new high-end eatery that focuses on local food with a southern flair.

Another dessert option is Whit’s Frozen Custard.

If you’re in the mood for pie, head to Plain City, where Der Dutchman offers several varieties made using traditional Amish recipes. The restaurant serves its made-from-scratch meals family style, but also offers individual meals as well as a popular buffet.

Plain City, which counts the Amish among its early settlers, is still home to a thriving Mennonite population. Stores and housing developments are nestled among rows of soybeans and corn.

“It’s a small town. People are friendly,” said Kary Barnes, a mother of two.

She recommends visiting Yutzy’s

Farm Market. In addition to carrying produce, bulk food and deli items, the market sells swing sets. Kids are allowed to play on the sets and also can visit Yutzy’s mini petting zoo.

Locals also visit The Cheese House for gourmet meats and cheeses, Barnes said. Her children enjoy the library.

The Plain City Public Library welcomes kids for story hour, a Lego club and other special events, said youth services librarian Amanda Warner.

“The (school) buses drop off here,” she said. “Kids stop into the library to study or use the computers.”

Kids also will want to visit Dave’s Old Time Hobby Shop, which specializes in model planes. Sports enthusiasts may want to check out the Phoenix Bat Company. The hour-long tour of the wooden bat company costs $10.

For outdoor fun, stroll the boardwalk at Glacier Ridge Metro Park, home to blue heron and turtles. Closer to Marysville is Wakeopolis, a wakeboard park that uses an overhead cable system to propel riders across a lake.

Carlisle Gifts has undergone three expansions during Debra Kingry’s 23 years working at the eclectic gift shop in Plain City. “We try to have a little bit of everything,� said the general manager of the 8,900-square-foot shop.

She strives to spread the word that the store, located under the same roof as Der Dutchman Restaurant and part the Dutchman Hospitality company, carries a wide array of goods designed to appeal to busy women and their families. “We’re not the old craft shop of 25 years ago,� she said.

She employs buyers and designers who try to present the merchandise in ways that allow shoppers to visualize how it can be used in their house, she said, adding, “We want her to see how it can be incorporated in her home.�

How often does the store’s stock rotate?

We’re getting new things every day.

It’s constantly changing. It needs to always be changing.

How does that dedication to changing over the shop impact the amount of goods that you order?

We’re more like a boutique. That’s the feeling. I buy a few pieces and once it’s gone, it’s gone. If you buy a dress here, not everybody in the community is going to have that dress.

Do you try to hit a wide spectrum of price points?

Yes. That’s important. We want you to enjoy the shop no matter what your reason to visit is, whether you are here just to relax and be inspired or whether you are shopping for something in particular. Depending on their reasons for coming that day, people want to see different prices.

How kid-friendly are you?

We’re very child- and familyfriendly. We have a children’s area with items that range in price from $1.99 to $15.

1. Use a ruler to draw a 10-inch square on the foam board. Mea-

sure in about 1 inch from each side and draw another square.

3. Use a hole punch to punch holes all the way around the frame,

every inch or so. These measurements do not have to be exact, so go ahead and put away the ruler!

4. Cut a piece of white yarn or string about 2-3 feet long. Take one end and tape it to the back of the frame. Tie a small knot in the other end as close to the edge as you can.

5. Start weaving your yarn through the different holes in the frame, creating a web-like pattern. The small knot will help you grab onto the yarn as you push it through the holes.

6. You will go through several pieces of yarn. Just be sure to tape both ends of them all on the back of the frame.

7. Cut out a spider shape from black felt and attach googly eyes or make eyes from a different color of felt. If you need to draw the spider first, draw it on a piece of paper. Cut out the paper and use it as a pattern to cut the spider out of felt.

8. Put the spider’s legs through some of the woven yarn to hold it in place. Move him around the web throughout the month!

We were eager to try Melt because it seems familyfriendly and it’s grilled cheese. Grilled cheese is a crowdpleaser! Because we are terrible planners, we ended up going on a Saturday afternoon between lunch and dinner. The wait was around 30 minutes, which I felt was reasonable on a Saturday afternoon. This place is in the Short North. I think if it was in the Polaris area, the wait would’ve been much longer.

Instead of taking your name at a hostess station, you pull a nametag from a plastic Halloween pumpkin. Our nametag said “Aslan” and the kids thought that was cool.

It was a nice quirk thrown in. We looked at a brochuresize menu of an insane amount of choices while we waited, which made the 30 minutes go quickly. The actual menu at the table was ridiculous with choices, but the server was great about telling us how it works.

I ordered the Big Popper, which is jalapeno peppers, cheddar and cream cheese on bread, then they batter and deep-fry the whole thing. (I KNOW!) I didn’t carefully read the menu so this last part was a surprise. It tasted good, but it was a lot to take. I mean, butter is delicious, but you don’t just bite into a stick of it. It was a similar feeling. I had about four bites and was stuffed.

The leftovers held up well, which is always a plus. Melt also serves Gosling’s ginger beer, my favorite. The kids ordered more wisely and thus enjoyed their meals way more.

The restrooms were clean and had a changing station for babies. The whole restaurant was clean, bright and friendly. For the four of us, it was around $50 with the tip and appetizer. I’m not sure if I would make this a regular on our restaurant rotation, mostly because the food is all cheese and deep-fried. We aren’t health-food nuts either.

We later joked that the water was deep-fried.

I was excited to go to Melt. I’ve never been there and wanted to try it. There was a big mural and it was cool, and I loved the way the restaurant looked. I ordered the Kindergartner, which is grilled cheese with tomato soup.

I loved how cheesy the grilled cheese was and that the tomato soup was in a coffee mug. Plus, it tasted good.

The service was good. They showed us the special and pointed out things on the menu and I liked that.

I would go back any time.

Going to Melt was quite an experience. I feel kind of bad to say this, but I honestly did not expect good quality food or service because it is a grilled-cheese place.

But the people and the food there definitely proved me wrong, and I’m pretty glad they did.

It looks very unique. When you first walk in, you’ll see a big mural with a bunch of characters from all things; I even found Calvin and Hobbes in there. Then, in the eating area there’s a big mish-mash of things. It’s definitely kid-friendly.

I ordered the chicken fingers and a cup of roasted garlic tomato soup with a side of french fries. Also, I had lemonade. I really liked it. The soup I think was my favorite. It was amazing.

The service was great. The lady who waited on us was very nice and polite, as was the rest of the staff we encountered. They weren’t fooling around or goofing off and things like that.

The bathrooms definitely exceeded my expectations. It was very clean and everything was fully functional. There was in fact a diaper changing station in the bathroom.

I would probably go back.

In the fall, the farm offers lanternlit wagon rides that are family-friendly but a little spooky. The farm also has a corn maze and giant slingshots for launching pumpkins. During the summer, the farm hosts chuck-wagon dinner rides. Upon arrival, guests can fish, visit the petting zoo, play with the giant slingshots and explore the farmyard. When the dinner bell rings, it’s time to gather for a barbecue dinner followed by a wagon ride through the countryside. Dessert is served at the campfire, where adults dine on homemade cobbler and kids can make s’mores.

The farm’s setting on 370 acres is a wonderful patchwork of old forest, farm fields and green meadows.

Branstrators Farm, which has been in Jon Branstrator’s family for five generations, grows asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and peaches.

Branstrator, who has traveled and worked extensively in Central America, embraces innovative farming techniques. He is dedicated to using environmentally friendly farming practices.

The farm also welcomes visitors every fall and spring for weekend festivals. The Three Sisters Harvest Festival, set for Oct. 4-5, focuses on the Native American practice of planting corn, squash and beans together for a symbiotic relationship. It features hayrides, pumpkin smashing, music and more.

The spring Strawberry and Asparagus Festival celebrates the beginning of the

growing season and includes music, vendors and more.

A&M Farm Orchard, a familyrun operation, offers pick-your-own strawberries and 15 varieties of apples.

Apples generally are available from September through Halloween.

Wallabies at Horsefeathers Farm

HORSEFEATHERS FARM (7200 state Route 350, Clarksville 45113; 937-2893504, horsefeathersfarmonline.com) Despite the name, the real attraction here are wallabies. Owner Bob Heyob raises them and loves to share his passion for the mini members of the kangaroo clan.

Heyob’s Wallaby Encounter ($6 per person with a minimum charge of $40) includes facts about the marsupials, opportunities to hold the animals and a lesson about endangered animals (some breeds of wallabies are endangered). Don’t be surprised if Heyob’s miniature deer, Dear Abby, comes by for some loving during the 45-minute

presentation. This “muntjac” or barking deer species is extremely curious about visitors.

Heyob, a retiree who breeds wallabies for numerous zoos, opens his farm to the public because he wants to share his knowledge and his wonderful property. In addition to the barnful of exotic animals, the farm includes a pond, picnic shelter and a creek bursting with fossils.

Heyob, a lifelong fossil and arrowhead hunter, also offers a presentation about the area’s early history.

His late wife, Mary, felt strongly that they should bring children to the farm to meet the animals and experience a day in the country.

“She said, ‘We’re being selfish if we don’t share this,’” he said.

When I told the boys we were going to spend the day touring farms in southwestern Ohio, they were expecting cows, pigs and chickens.

But what they got during a visit to Clinton County, where freeways and traffic lights give way to winding roads and rolling hills, was an exotic adventure. Yes, the rural area has plenty of traditional farm animals but it also is home to wallabies and alpacas. Visitors have plenty of opportunities to pick and taste locally grown produce.

Located about 60 miles from downtown Columbus, Clinton County offers families the chance to sample life in the country. You’ll need a full day or maybe two to check out all the region has to offer.

My boys don’t follow or play baseball. They’re only vaguely aware that professional horse racing exists. But it turns out you don’t have to be a fan to appreciate the craftsmanship of a Louisville Slugger bat or the majesty of Churchill Downs. Our visit to the Derby City was filled with opportunities to experience new things. Getting there is easy. Just head south on Interstate 71 for about 200 miles.

If the kids had any reservations about touring the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, they were quashed by the 120-foot steel bat outside of this downtown facility. It’s a scale replica of

the one Babe Ruth used and marks the entrance to the factory.

Once inside, visitors can see how post-shaped pieces of wood are transformed into baseball bats. They can also handle bats made for the pros and test out the merchandise in the batting cage.

The experience is very kid-friendly, and the boys absorbed a lot of history about how the Kentucky company has shaped Major League Baseball. They also really liked the miniature bats handed out at the end of the tour.

Cost: $12 adults and $7 for kids ages 6-12. Children ages 5 and younger are free.

The boys learned plenty and enjoyed exploring the museum before and after our Barn and Backside Tour. They loved the “Riders Up” exhibit — a simulated horse race where visitors compete in a Run for the Roses. They had fun trying to call the race from the soundproof announcer’s booth. The museum also shows a movie that helped the kids understand the scope and importance of the Kentucky Derby.

The outdoor tour of Churchill Downs was the highlight of the visit. The Barn and Backside Tour takes visitors to private areas of the track where they can see horses and their riders training and relaxing. You can glimpse the living quarters of man and beast. Our tour guide did a great job explaining the intricacies of racing around the track on a horse capable of going 45 mph.

Cost: $14, adults; $11 for kids ages 13-18; $6 for kids ages 5-12; and free for children younger than 5. Backside tour costs an additional $11 and is available March 15-Nov. 30. Children must be 5 or older to take the tour.

Located along the river and offering a great view of Louisville, the Indiana state park offers a rich look at the area’s history. The park features fossil beds that are more than 380 million years old and among the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world. Visitors cannot remove fossils from the park, but they are encouraged to look for them. While scampering along the former ocean bottom, the boys found plenty of interesting rocks

and shells. The interpretive center offers a good overview of the region’s early inhabitants.

The 100-year-old Mississippi River-style steamboat is a National Landmark that cruises up and down the river year-round. We opted for a lunch cruise. After an enjoyable meal, we took a stroll around the boat that included a walk through the engine room. The surprisingly tidy room offers a sense of the power the steam engines generate to turn the paddlewheel and propel the boat forward.

We even took the kids out for a fancy meal at Bourbons Bistro (2255 Frankfort Ave.). It was a Sunday evening and no one seemed to mind that we brought the boys. The sophisticated Southern food was worth the price, and the wait staff was helpful and friendly.

On our way out of town, we made a final foray into the neighborhood to buy a delicious peach pie at Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen (2232 Frankfort Ave.).

We spent an afternoon at the Louisville Zoo. The boys enjoyed watching the grizzly bears and were a little envious of their watering hole, which looked inviting on a hot day. They also liked learning about the Sumatran Tiger in the zoo’s island display. The exhibit, like much of the zoo, is designed to make visitors think about their role in animal conservation. The zoo, which includes a botanical garden, operates under the mission of “Better the Bond Between People and Our Planet” and is committed to working with endangered species.
