What wedding dress trends are you seeing for Spring 2024? I think that everyone can agree the bow is back! I love elegant, bold, clean lines, drop waists and body-loving silhouettes. Tea length gowns and tiers are amazing, also. And lace is never out of trend. I do see a stronger evening vibe in many collections this year. Weddings themselves have turned from one gown to entire event dressing.

Lara Knight, custom wedding gown designer

PHOTOS: HEATHER P. DAVIS-BANDAVARAM

Lara Knight is a wedding gown designer with over 20 years of experience creating custom looks for brides. Based in New York City, Lara has showcased her designs from coast to coast on thousands of clients for their special day. Whether your style is bohemian, glamorous or something in between, choosing the right-for-you wedding gown should be an exciting and magical experience. New York City-based wedding gown designer Lara Knight provided her take on trends for the season in this exclusive Q&A, hopefully giving you a nudge in the right direction on what to wear on your special day. Specializing in custom wedding gowns, Lara’s design aesthetic is bold, eye-catching and statement-making. She specializes

What did you see on the runways that you are particularly excited about seeing more of in 2024? Besides my love of the strong, bold woman, I do see many designers not only playing with but embracing all shapes and silhouettes. I see that the statement gown is being perfectly paired with playful pieces to make the entire wedding weekend an event—a party! If a bride has no idea what kind of look she wants to emulate on her wedding day, where should she start? Always start with your true (fashion) personality. Brides should look at what they love to wear (not their Saturday lounge pants) but the go-to pieces in their own closet. What neckline do you choose? What skirt shape? What about fabric? How do you style your hair? Then, I recommend brides blend those answers with how they envision themselves on the day. Ask yourself if your choices are a reflection of who you truly are. Before you shop, picture all of it. And if you’re stuck, hire a professional or ask your friends to help out.

in providing clients with unforgettable and completely personalized looks for their wedding day, a craft she has been honing for the last 20 years. While trends come and go, a bride’s core fashion personality tends to remain the same, something both designers and stylists encourage brides to keep in mind as they are searching for that perfect wedding look to complement their figure as much as their character. “I was that bride once and knew I was going to make my own gown someday,” Lara says. “But I know how it feels to be nervous in making the right choice for the day. My advice is to stay true to yourself. I cried when I saw my favorite gown at the Met Gala and knew it was my inspiration. You will know when you find yours, too. Tears or not.” SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

What about jewelry and shoe trends? I am seeing bold, big and glamorous. I see veils being replaced with hats and headbands. I see strappy heels and statement earrings. For those that are choosing veils, the blusher style is making a comeback. How can brides match their desired gown to their personalities? What tips do you have 14

for brides shopping off-therack, as well as ordering custom-made gowns? If brides have a bubbly personality but they are searching for a serious dress, I guarantee they will feel “off” when they try those types of formal dresses on. On the other hand, if brides tend to be more serious and are shopping for pink, fluffy ball gowns, they will start to question themselves.

Gowns feel different already, especially my gowns that mold to your body and support you. If brides start with their own personalities (again, ask your friends, they know

best), their questions will start to answer themselves. But, be curious! You might surprise yourself. Both off-the-rack and custom gowns should always be fun. They are very different from one another. When brides try on my collection pieces, for example, they have a chance to touch and feel them— to see the quality and feel the strength of the fabric and structure. I won’t let brides (I’m sure the many talented stylists at bridal boutiques will say the same) try on too many dresses. Keep it to a low try-on amount and make another appointment if needed. Be sure to have your ideas ready before your first appointment. The process is similar for custom gowns—be ready! Have your thoughts processed. Creating a custom gown requires more trust and communication as you are working so closely with the designer.

Pro Tip My advice is to stay true to yourself. —Lara Knight, custom wedding gown designer

What are the benefits of having a custom wedding gown? A custom gown is a journey. Most of my clients are with me for well over a year during the process. The brides get to experience the gown from start to finish, getting to see it take shape. Not only do you get to work directly with the designer, but you get to choose from quite possibly hundreds of ideas. For me, the process is first a design meeting and measurements. The designs are then discussed and chosen. A basic silhouette is picked so that the second fitting can be a base, toile fitting. Then it begins to build into that dream gown.« SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

Timelessness is the gold standard of wedding day makeup artists. That theme centered my conversations with both local and national experts as we discussed 2024 trends, as well as broader makeup advice for your big day. What’s in this year? Dewey complexions with “less drama and intensity” and an overall “back-to-basics” approach emulating a bride’s natural beauty. What’s out? Over-the-top looks with heavy strip eyelashes, exaggerated winged liner, extreme baking and “Lion King-like contour” that changes facial structures. Delcina Brown, Michelle Brown and Amber Smith—a trio of makeup artists from 614 Beauty—say brides should aim for makeup that is “dramatic enough for the wedding,” but without making you look like someone else. Award-winning, New York City-based makeup artist Amanda Gabbard echoes that notion. “The dewy, natural and neutral-toned look is in,” says Amanda, who has 15 years of makeup artistry under her belt. “In my opinion, it never went out! Think iridescence, not glitter, caramels and nude hues instead of purples and lavender.” While many may admire glamorous looks, Amanda says SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

“going back to the bridal basics” helps people look like the best versions of themselves, with a soft, glam finish. So how do you achieve that best version? A key ingredient, makeup artists say, is teamwork—and that begins with an expert who listens closely and sweats the little things. “We make sure we go over every detail, taking into account a bride’s hairstyle, the bridesmaids’ colors, everything,” says 614 Beauty’s Delcina, who has 20 years of makeup experience. Indeed, Amanda says brides must not overlook makeup trials, which offer both a chance to discuss looks and to make sure that communication is easy and energizing between the artist and the client. “We are up close and personal on the biggest day of their lives, so the bride needs to trust the makeup artist and feel comfortable,” Amanda says. 614 Beauty’s Michelle encourages brides to choose somebody who wants to be there and who wants to be a part of your day. “My goal is to make sure you feel like a princess, hug you if you’re going to cry and get you a mimosa if you need one,” says Michelle, who has 25 years experience. “I want you to feel supported and cared about.” And while intangible qualities are essential, also important are credentials, such as if they have their state licensure or certification in cosmetology. “Check these people’s backgrounds,” 614 Beauty’s Amber, who has 10 years experience as a makeup artist. “See if they are licensed, which isn’t the end-all-be-all, but they need to be professional. This is going to last you forever, through all of your pictures, so it really is that important.” Amanda advises brides to bring several inspirational photos to their initial makeup trial—looks that you like, and equally as important, looks that you don’t. “Something that looks good on Jennifer Lopez or Lady Gaga won’t necessarily look

QuickTips • Book a makeup artist at least one year in advance of your wedding day. • Choose a space with a lot of room (and air conditioning if it’s in the summer months as makeup melts). • Keep your skin healthy, hydrated and youthful by drinking water, exfoliating and wearing sunscreen. • Bring a speaker for music, along with a party atmosphere and attitude for your own happiness.

good on you,” Amanda says. “The artist’s job is to achieve a similar look that suits the bride’s individuality.” Delcina gets her makeup inspiration simply by looking at the bride’s face, saying she can “visualize what’s going to make her look her best,” using adjectives like “pretty,” “classic” and “timeless.” Her colleague Michelle is largely inspired by “clean and classic” Eastern beauty, while art inspires Amber, calling the faces of her clients her “canvas.” Often overlooked is skin care prep, which should be part of the wedding day makeup conversation. “Your skin care is just as important as your makeup application,” Delcina says. “If you have a damaged barrier, you’re not going to get the result you want.” If the skin is flaky and dry, for example, that is going to shine through the makeup application—your imperfections won’t magically disappear with makeup. The 614 Beauty team recommends dermaplaning the week of the wedding to help the makeup lay better. “The sooner you start your skincare routine, the better,” Delcina emphasizes. “It’s like going to the gym. You’re going to have much better results with your skin care and makeup if you’re consistent.” “We know the products we’re using, and that includes the science and composition of those products and how they are going to lay on the skin,” Michelle says. “Start your facials [as this gets anything out that is clogging the pores] and keep hydrated with lots of water.” Amanda says the key to transforming a bride on her big day—as opposed to, say, a dinner party—is to make sure that makeup is “ironclad”—able to withstand photography, tears of joy, dancing, eating, drinking and more—without looking overly heavy. Michelle adds one last tip for brides as they consider the look they want: “Make sure you’re looking at the eye shape and shape of their face when looking at inspiration photos—it makes expectations of what you are envisioning a little more realistic. [At 614 Beauty], we are here to customize however a bride wants to look and feel.” «

CONVERSATIONS Two marriage therapists provide insights on how couples can stay focused on each other in the midst of wedding planning challenges.

Effective communication is essential for a happy and healthy relationship. If you can establish this before embarking on your marriage journey, your relationship will be in great shape prior to, during and after you say, “I do.” It can be easy to get caught in the glitz and glam of wedding day bliss, and completely overlook why you’re having a wedding in the first place. A marriage is a momentous union between two people looking forward to spending the rest of their lives together, but this can quickly get muddled when you’re in the thick of budgeting for the event, creating the guest list and securing your date. What makes a wedding so special is, first and foremost, witnessing the love shared between two people. But when couples are deep in the wedding planning process, perhaps stressed out about family dynamics or financials, how can they remain focused on their marriage? Emilee Krupa is a licensed marriage and family therapist based in Utah but provides online services across the globe. She specializes in private practice, individual therapy, group therapy and couple’s retreats, “doing all kinds of experiential therapy” to help couples reconnect. For her newlywed and newly engaged clients, Emilee recommends premarital counseling. “It’s easier to do it at the beginning because you’re discussing your vision for the future and your shared goals and meaning and values,” Emilee says. Her recommendation? Get into therapy before you get to a point of contention and consider such questions as: What are our core values and beliefs? Where do we want to live in the future? Do we want to move to another country or another city? Do we want to have a family? What are our career aspirations? “You’re investing in your relationship,” she says. “We invest in gym memberships so we can stay healthy, we invest in vacations to take vacations from

reality—we need to be investing in our relationships.” Early in their relationships, couples often fail to understand each other’s attachment styles, Emilee says. “I believe attachment is the core of our being as humans,” she says. “Exploring a couple’s attachment style provides so much insight into how you respond to one another, understanding what your partner’s needs are.” Types of attachment styles include anxious, secure and dismissive/avoidant. If your attachment style is anxious, for instance, you need constant validation that the relationship is strong. “If we understand that and know that—because arguments and disagreements will happen—we can come to a place where one partner says, ‘I’m feeling very emotionally overwhelmed and need a break,’ instead of storming off or shutting down,” she says. Couples also should talk about specific ways they can support each other, whether they’re having a bad day at work, are stressed out about wedding details or are struggling internally with something. Emilee advises engaged couples to “connect before you communicate,” saying the practice is vital in remembering why a couple is getting married in the first place. “Simple bids of connection, like a hug when you see each other or sending a text or picture during the day, are crucial to keeping your relationship on track,” Emilee says. Having daily and monthly check-ins is also hugely important. These can be sim-

The Happy, Healthy Couple Checklist • Daily and monthly check-ins with each other. • Weekly date nights (making sure you have meaningful, intentional time with one another) • Telling yourself daily, “Our relationship matters” • Maintenance is always easier than recovery. • Share love and kindness daily. • Be prepared to grow and change and expect that from your partner.

ple, like asking your partner what they have going on during the week or sharing their highs and lows from their day. Emilee reminds couples that they are on the same team. “If I had one piece of advice for newlyweds to feel connected to one another, it would be to prioritize emotional intimacy above anything else,” Emilee says. “How to share openly and honestly with your partner, connecting before you communicate ... so that when harder conversations do come up, it’s easier to move through and overcome.” Maureen Scelza is a Columbus marriage and family therapist who has been working with couples since 2010. When working with engaged couples, the big questions she goes through with them are, “How do we communicate in a healthy manner? How do we have hard conversations?” Common discussion points include family conflict, finances, intimacy and feeling emotionally safe with your partner. “Oftentimes, it’s as simple as one partner seeing the other as a human,” Maureen says. “And that can make all the difference.” Her go-to tools for premarital couples include reflecting on what makes them feel seen and making sure they have meaningful time together. “The theme

of our sessions is centered around how a couple can communicate better and in a healthy way,” Maureen says. She likes her couples to go through such questions as: How can we grow together? How are you doing with your career? How are you doing emotionally? Am I giving you what you need at home? In addition to having difficult conversations, Maureen encourages couples to understand that their relationships are always evolving. “Our lives are growing and changing all the time,” Maureen says. “Weddings are stressful and expensive, and there is a lot of outside influence. How can you check-in with each other?” She also touches on the danger of comparison—comparing your wedding with your friend’s wedding, or your relationship with one you see on television. She considers this a “fatal flaw.” Maureen says, “Questions couples need to be asking are: What should our relationship look like? Abigayle + Jackson BY ASHLEY ALT PHOTOS BY KISMET VISUALS + CO It all started in 2014 when Jackson Westerheide asked Abigayle Barker to their senior year homecoming dance at Granville High School. They turned out to be the dates that never left each other. After graduation, they headed in different directions and started their long-distance college relationship 425 miles apart. They made it through four years of phone calls, FaceTimes and long weekend visits with absolutely no regrets, the couple says. Nine years post-college, the couple decided to officially start the rest of their lives together and share their big day with their closest family and friends. Jackson proposed to Abigayle at Ariel Foundation Park in Mount Vernon. This place holds a special place in the couple’s hearts as Jackson’s grandfather was the mayor of Mount Vernon for 24 years and has an island at the park named after him, “Mavis Island.” “Jack has always had a special relationship with his grandparents and has always looked up to his grandmother and grandfather’s relationship,” Abigayle says. “They, too, were high school sweethearts and will be celebrating 60 years of marriage in 2025.” The two got married this past summer at Oak Grove at Jorgensen Farms, spending their honeymoon afterward on the islands of Kauai and Maui in Hawaii. “The whole day was so special for different reasons,” Jackson says. “From the first look with Abby and her dad to the ceremony itself, and the reception filled with dancing and celebrating our closest friends and family, it was truly a day that will never be forgotten.” «

A near-empty student union provided the basis for the future union of Raychel Edelsberg and Gavin Fusting. In the summer of 2019, while both were students at Ohio State University, Edelsberg and Fusting happened to be killing time at the largely deserted Ohio Union. “He came up and sat near me,” Raychel says. “Our paths never would have crossed otherwise.” From there, a relationship evolved over time. The couple drew closer during the pandemic, when they stayed for a spell with Gavin’s family in Pittsburgh. “Our relationship had escalated so much during that time,” Raychel says. After a few months, they returned to Columbus. By then, the relationship that began so randomly had emerged into something solid. “My grandpa always taught me to pay it forward,” says Raychel, who lost her grandfather a year ago. “Gavin really embodies that. He’s so gracious and so kind. I knew that he was the right person for me because my grandparents loved him as much as I did.” “What really attracted us to Retreat 21 was the idea of the cabins and families being able to be on property and have that whole weekend feel. “We wanted rustic and elegant at the same time. It’s in the middle of the woods, but we wanted it to be more elegant and upscale but also relaxed ... My favorite part, besides marrying Gavin, was at the end of the night: Our last song of the night that our DJ had played was ‘Sweet Caroline,’ and everybody that was still there circled us. Gavin and I danced in the middle. It was just the most special time, looking around at everyone who traveled and loves us.” “[The death of my grandfather] was such a tragedy. We just commemorated a year without him. My grandparents are everything to me, and we had their wedding cake topper. “I wanted people to walk by the cake and know it was my grandparents’ wedding cake topper, not just a vintage look, so we had a really beautiful picture of them at their wedding day next to the cake.” «

real weddings May 5, 2023 | Idyll Reserve

Ann + Dylan BY PETER TONGUETTE PHOTOS BY DERK’S WORKS Ann Berkow and Dylan Metz were neighbors first and a couple second. About five years ago, Ann—a native of Lancaster, Penn., who had moved to Central Ohio for a job— leased a home in Clintonville from Dylan’s father. One day, she saw Dylan returning home from a run. “It was like something out of a romcom,” says Ann, a passionate runner herself. “I asked, ‘Can we run together? I don’t want to run by myself.’” Dylan said yes—and, several years later, Ann said yes to a different question at Dylan’s parents’ property in Hocking Hills. By then, the two were a couple. “It was an absolutely beautiful winter day,” Ann remembers. “The sky was the most beautiful shade of blue, and there was snow everywhere.” Going out for a walk, Dylan asked Ann to hold their dog’s leash. “He got down on one knee,” Ann says. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’” Although the couple met by chance, it turns out they complement each other in all ways. “He’s a tax accountant, so he keeps to himself and is very left-brain,” Ann says. “I’m a musician and a teacher, and I’m very right-brain. This is definitely a case of where opposites do attract.” “Idyll Reserve is right outside of Hocking Hills in Hocking County. My family lives all over the place, so we knew that we wanted to do something small in Hocking Hills because Dylan’s parents have had this cabin for a while. He grew up there, and that was very important to him. Idyll Reserve was great because everyone could have their separate space, but we could still fit the same amount of people. Last July, my grandmother died. Then, ironically, six months later in February, my mom was coming back to help look at the venue for the setup, and my grandfather had died. My grandparents both graduated from the University of Louisville, and we honored them by getting married on Derby Day, which we didn’t even plan for.” «

Although they both grew up in Powell, Lexie Salupo and Drew NeCamp would never have met were it not for the population growth in the Central Ohio suburb. “Everywhere around where I lived was cornfields and farming fields,” Lexie says. “It’s all developed now.” As it turned out, two existing middle schools were combined into a newly built one. That’s where Lexie and Drew met. “We met the first day of 8th grade,” says Lexie, who struck up a strong friendship with Drew. They dated during the last two years of high school but gave their relationship a rest through college. “While being separate, we always were in contact with each other,” Lexie says. Eventually, Drew found himself in Washington, D.C., but was drawn back to Central Ohio—and to his old pal. “His parents still say to this day: ‘He had his eye on a prize coming home!’” Lexie says. The two share many of the same values. “We’re the glue to our entire friend group,” she says. “We like to entertain, we like to get everyone together.” “We’re both Catholic, and to be completely honest, I had fallen out of the pattern of going to church consistently for years. But Drew was going consistently in D.C. and when he moved back, he wanted to find a church where the priest was relatable. We went to a mass with Father Vince [at St. Mary’s Church], who is the priest that married us, and he’s young and fun, and I feel like that was reflected in our marriage ceremony. It’s a beautiful venue. It’s one of the number one churches that are chosen for a wedding venue in Columbus. I wanted it to be timeless, bright, clean, chic. Originally, I wanted it to be all black-and-white, because I look back at photos of my grandparents or just vision boards on Instagram and Pinterest, and I was continuously drawn toward weddings that had that clean aesthetic. Then, having it in June, I thought, ‘We’re not having a black tie wedding, so I feel it’s only appropriate to introduce some bit of color.’”«

Lauren + Adam BY PETER TONGUETTE PHOTOS BY SAMUEL WALKER PHOTOGRAPHY About six years ago, Lauren Lynn experienced two devastating losses in a single month. In April 2017, the Cincinnati native lost her mother and her grandmother. “They raised me—my mom and my grandma, it was the three of us,” Lauren says. “I was an only child, and my mom was a single mom.” A year later, while working in Chicago, Lauren met Adam Robbins, a Toledo native who was also in the Windy City for business. They first connected using the dating app Bumble, but a relationship soon formed. To hear Lauren describe it, to this day it is rooted in something serious and sincere. “We take our relationship very seriously,” Lauren says. “We aren’t the type to poke fun at each other. We feel like our love and our relationship is very sacred.” When it came time to plan their wedding, Adam had a huge family to invite, but the most important people in Lauren’s life were not able to be present—at least not physically. “I knew that they were there with me, and I knew that I didn’t need to make an announcement to everyone or have some long speech about them,” Lauren says. “Anything that somebody would want to know about them, they can see through me.” Instead, Lauren chose to honor her mother and grandmother in a subtler fashion, though one even more meaningful to her. “I had [charms with their photos] on my bouquet so that they both could walk me down the aisle,” says Lauren, who also left open two seats in the front row. “I wanted them to still have seats in the front row as they would have if they were here physically,” she says. “In Adam’s vows, he mentioned something that I think holds true: We are very yin and yang. I can be exuberant and enthusiastic and impulsive, and he can be very diligent and thoughtful and calm. “He’s the one who really helped keep the train on the track and kept me focused on what we really did want to prioritize for our wedding. We both were aligned with what kind of feelings we wanted at our wedding, and what kind of environment we wanted, and who we wanted to be around us. We both knew we wanted it to be romantic and timeless and something we could always look back on fondly and remember all of the most important people to us being there.” «

Sometimes close friends know what’s best for you. That was the case with Rian Culbreth and Jeremy Thomas, whose close mutual friend kept telling them they’d be perfect for one another—but they wouldn’t listen. “She told Jeremy, ‘I think you should meet Rian,’ and Jeremy wasn’t interested. And she comes to me like, ‘Hey, I tried to put your name out there for Jeremy. I think you’d be a good match,’ but I said, ‘No, I’m not interested.’ Then we finally meet at her birthday party, and we hit it off,” says Rian. The couple laughs about this now and knows many more laughs and joyful moments lie ahead now that they’ve tied the knot. Since the couple met “the old-fashioned way”—in person—they mirrored old-fashioned elegance in their engagement and wedding details. After Jeremy proposed to Rian by a fountain in New York City’s Central Park, complete with the classic horse-drawn carriage and violinist, the couple got to work planning their wedding back home in Columbus. “We wanted something intimate with an industrial garden theme,” Rian says, which made the natural elegance of the Makoy Center the ideal venue for the big day.” Rian wore a dress from Wendy’s Bridal with all the feminine touches that made her feel beautiful, including mesh on the sides, diamond detailing on the straps and a silhouette that accentuated her curves. But the bride shouldn’t be the only one having fun with her wedding day look. Wearing a custom sky blue suit—“because I wanted to pop, too!” Jeremy says—he sang “Most Beautiful” by Maverick City Music as Rian made her bridal march. Jeremy grew up with him and his brother dancing the bachata, a social dance that originated in the Dominican Republic and is now enjoyed globally, when they decided to learn a fun, not-too-difficult dance for homecoming. It beats the typical sway of high school slow dances and made for a personal flare to the couple’s first dance. Surrounded by touches of rose gold and navy blue decorations, Phillip’s Photography and Designs captured the momentous occasion, full of smiles and laughs. With an easygoing vibe that wrapped up the night with a party on the dance floor and so much love in abundance, the Thomas’ wedding day is one the couple and their 110 guests will cherish for life.« SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

Dean Stitz and Victoria Hardesty met in the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio Human Resources Networking Group in 2018, attending meetings each month. It wasn’t until 2022 that Dean messaged Tori on LinkedIn about a job opening he thought she might be a fit for, suggesting they grab coffee sometime. “Little did I know it ended up being our first date,” Tori says. As a Valentine’s Day gift last March, Dean booked a trip to Florida for the two of them. They made a detour on the way to the airport, stopping at the Columbus Commons where Dean had a photographer ready. “He pulled out the ring and got down on one knee in the middle of the Commons, and now we get to remember it every time we go to an event or concert there.” The two got married at the Revery last August, soaking in every moment of their “rooftop wedding,” honeymooning afterward in Riviera Maya, Mexico. “We took communion during our wedding ceremony, which symbolizes the sealing of the covenant. It was such a meaningful, intentional piece of our ceremony that I will never forget. We had the chance to pray together and just have that moment with each other.” «

Miranda + Tommy BY ASHLEY ALT PHOTOS BY BRIT JAYE PHOTOGRAPHY Miranda Fisher and Tommy Gentile were set up by a mutual friend two weeks after Miranda moved to Columbus in 2018, and started dating thereafter. On December 21, 2021, Tommy convinced Miranda that the two were attending his holiday work party at Easton Town Center. After they parked, Tommy asked if they could walk by “the giant Christmas tree” since they hadn’t gotten to see any Christmas lights that season. “He stopped me as we were right in front of the tree and got down on one knee,” Miranda says. For their wedding, they knew they wanted a timeless and traditional celebration where they could look back 20 years from now and have it still look like it was in style. “A fun thing we did was a confessional video booth in place of a guest book where guests could go talk to the camera and give us well wishes or talk to us,” Miranda says. “It became really fun later in the night once people had drinks in them.” The couple mentions their wedding dance floor was something they have always looked forward to on their special day, and that the Westin Great Southern Columbus delivered. “We love dancing, especially at weddings, so that was an important part of the celebration for us,” Miranda says. “Our DJ was amazing and everyone of all ages were on the dance floor the entire reception until it ended at 12 a.m.” «

They say the third time’s the charm, and that has certainly proven true for Madeleine Crilly and Madelyn Fireman, who married after an elopement and two reimagined plans for the main celebration. Their journey included a number of snafus, but nothing could stop them celebrating their love. They met while living in New Orleans in autumn 2014. Crilly found Fireman’s profile on OkCupid; in the photo, Fireman, a Columbus native, was wearing a Nina West shirt. Though Crilly wasn’t familiar with West then, she loves drag culture and was immediately interested. After some initial hesitation over their shared name, they bonded over their Jewish heritage and the fact they’d both served, separately, in the Jewish service organization Avodah. Their first date? Drag brunch, of course. By January, they say, their mutual friends were calling them “The Maddies,” and their adventure had begun. Crilly proposed on Mardi Gras 2019 at the Columns hotel, where Fireman’s sister was waiting with the couple’s dog, Radar, who wore a tuxedo that read, “Will you marry me?” Crilly dropped to her knee and presented Fireman with a ring containing a stone that had been in Crilly’s family for five generations. Not to be outdone, Fireman later presented Crilly with a ring designed by Fireman’s cousin, a jeweler in Atlanta. The couple eloped in 2019 for insurance purposes and planned a “big, fat, Jewish wedding” for October 2021, but a COVID surge put those plans on hold. They rescheduled to the following November, still planning for a large celebration, until Radar fell ill and required expensive, life-saving care that drained their wedding budget and reduced their guest list dramatically. “A smaller wedding actually turned out to be perfect for us,” Crilly says. “We were able to spend time with everybody, and that was so meaningful to us.” They chose Wagnalls Memorial Library for its cozy atmosphere and the homage it paid to Fireman’s paternal grandmother and Crilly’s maternal grandmother, who were both librarians. The brides further honored their lineage by displaying their mothers’ and maternal grandmothers’ wedding gowns at the venue. “A lot of things went haywire along the way,” Crilly says, “but we got to do what we wanted to do. We got our families together–” “And we stayed connected,” Fireman finishes. “That’s all we wanted,” Crilly adds. “It’s really rare in our community for two people who are queer to get together and then have supportive families. And to be able to celebrate that with our most special people was just incredible.” « SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

real weddings May 13, 2023 | The Ohio Statehouse

Claire + Chris BY MANDY SHUNNARAH PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA ADAMSON Both hailing from Ohio State University, Claire Spech and Chris Bell didn’t expect to start dating and fall in love. After an engagement at the waterfall on the Cantwell Cliffs trail at Hocking Hills State Park—for which they received cheers from the hikers on the trail overlooking the waterfall—the pair got to work planning their Columbus wedding. The couple wanted timeless elegance for the big day, beginning with a ceremony at St. Joseph Cathedral and ending with a reception at the Ohio Statehouse. “When we were in college, we went to a fundraiser at the Statehouse and Chris said, ‘We need to get married, and we need to do it here,’ so I knew we’d one day have our reception at the Statehouse,” Claire says. “Both places are large and grand, old and historical, so it made for a very elegant and timeless Columbus wedding,” she adds. Wanting to accentuate the existing beauty of the venues, the couple chose a neutral color palette— white, greenery and some light blue thrown in. The music complemented the overall vibe. “There was a lot of Rat Pack music playing, and we did our first dance to Frank Sinatra’s ‘Strangers in the Night,’” says Chris. While one of the best parts about the day is celebrating alongside those you love, the couple recommends carving out space to spend time soaking in the moment with your new spouse. “During the cocktail hour, we went to a private room to spend time with each other for 30 minutes,” Claire says. “It was after the ceremony and the photos, so to spend that one-on-one time before we went into the big party was really special. You’re excited to see everyone, but to cherish the moment with your new husband is wonderful.” «

Taylor Williams and Levi Jacob both grew up in Johnstown, but an age gap meant that the pair didn’t really begin to cross paths through mutual friends until Levi moved home post-college and Taylor began attending Ohio University. Eventually, Levi gathered the courage to ask her to dinner at the former rooftop restaurant Juniper (now the wedding venue Revery at North 4th Corridor) in January 2018. Taylor fell hard on that first date–literally. She took a tumble down a flight of stairs at the very start of their evening. Fortunately, the rest of the date was filled with nonstop, easily flowing conversation. Taylor returned to OU; three months later, they made it official. “Before, I would’ve never done a long-distance relationship, but for whatever reason, we made it work,” Levi says. “It was worth it.” Eventually, Levi knew it was time to visit an old friend: Yusef Sadiq, owner of Y Sadiq Diamond in Gahanna. The pair had gotten acquainted when Y Sadiq was based in Worthington Mall, next to the toy store where Levi worked while in college. Together they designed a ring based on a previous “try-on” shopping excursion Levi and Taylor had taken. Levi popped the question in January 2022 while on a ski trip with friends in Lake Tahoe, with assistance from a member of their group who happened to be a professional photographer. At the ceremony, Taylor opted to walk down the aisle solo, as her father had passed away unexpectedly three years before. But her mother surprised her with a small pendant containing some of her father’s ashes, which she carried on her bouquet. “It was an emotional moment for us,” Taylor recalls. “She explained, ‘I knew that you wanted to walk down the aisle by yourself because you didn’t want anyone to take Dad’s place, but this is my way of letting him be there with you.’” Taylor’s wedding band also helps connect her to her late father, as it contains the diamonds from the ring he gave her mother. When they initially brought the idea of creating a ring with these stones to Sadiq, he warned them that matching vintage diamonds to the new stones in Taylor’s engagement ring might prove challenging, if not impossible. “Once I brought in the diamonds and we were looking at them, he was like, ‘I’ve never seen this before, but they’re a perfect match,’” Taylor recalls. Aside from the wedding itself, both Taylor and Levi say that getting ready that morning with their wedding party was a highlight of the day. And of course, “Seeing all the people that we love and cherish the most, all in one space, and getting to celebrate us with them,” Taylor says. The Jacobs will have more to celebrate soon, too: They’re expecting their first child in early May.« SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

Tiffany + Kevin BY MANDY SHUNNARAH PHOTOS BY SAMUEL WALKER PHOTOGRAPHY The first time Tiffany Ho saw Kevin Ying, it was his profile on the dating and social networking service, Coffee Meets Bagel. “He had terrible photos,” Tiffany laughs, so she swiped left. The second time she saw him, her friend insisted she swipe right, and it’s a good thing Tiffany listened. Kevin is now her husband. The pair only had two in-person dates before COVID lockdowns forced them apart, so they connected over watching Netflix together. One of their favorites is the Korean drama “Crash Landing On You” which the couple bonded over when they couldn’t physically be together. Two years later, after Kevin proposed by the waterfall at the new Quarry Trails Metro Park, the couple got to work planning their wedding, which included an homage to the TV show that brought them close in those early days of their relationship. “Our first dance was to one of the songs from the drama,” Tiffany says. “And we tried to copy one of the scenes,” Kevin adds. In the scene, the female protagonist is lost in a crowd and the male character holds up a candle so she can find the flame and go to him. With help from dance lessons at Emerald City Ballroom, which helped Kevin work out the kinks in his self-proclaimed “three left feet,” the couple modified the scene for their dance. Instead of having Tiffany lost in a crowd, they used smoke machines to create the illusion of her being lost in clouds with Kevin holding a candle aloft. Even beyond their K-drama-inspired first dance, the Ying’s wedding was an international affair. “One of the important things to us was having a big wedding to bring people from all parts of our life together to celebrate,” Tiffany says. “People came from Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, and all around the nation from California to New York.” The international flavor continued in their seven-tier taro wedding cake. “It wasn’t the Asian light cake. It was Western-style, heavy, dense cake with taro filling and taro cream,” Tiffany notes. Made by Kelly’s Cakery, the cake was so delicious that when the Yings didn’t get to have as much of it at the wedding as they would have liked, they commissioned the bakery to make them another one after the celebration. With their venue bedecked in dark emerald green (Tiffany’s favorite color and the connection she has to growing up in Dublin where shamrocks are ever-present in the suburb) and navy blue in the shade of the New York Yankees (since Kevin grew up in NYC and they’re his favorite team), the couple danced the night away into their beautiful forever. « 42

For Tim Breese, going on a date with Katie Wenger was an easy choice. He was smitten by their match on Bumble, and the day of their first date happened to fall on a Sunday in autumn. “I was at home watching the Browns game, and I told myself that no matter how the date went, it couldn’t be any worse than the Browns game,” he says with a laugh. The two hit it off on that first date at the Goat in Downtown Columbus, but Katie needed to get two important opinions before she could feel confident in the new relationship. She needed Will and Grace’s approval. Not the title characters from the show “Will and Grace” but her two cats, a brother and sister who are “pretty much my everything,” Katie says. “I know they’d tell me if he was the real deal or not,” Katie adds. “I introduced him and right away the girl cat loved him. The boy cat took a little longer, but they eventually both fell in love with him and now he’s a cat daddy!” Before that, of course, a proposal was in order and Tim had his own tiny being he holds dear help out. On Christmas Eve 2021, which is Katie’s birthday, the pair celebrated in Youngstown with Tim’s family. What began as a traditional holiday took a surprising turn when Tim’s mom announced that Tim’s 11-month-old nephew had a Christmas book for Katie as a birthday present, and he wanted her to read it aloud. On the last page of that custom-made storybook featuring all the things Tim’s nephew got to do for his first Christmas, it said, “And his uncle asked, ‘Katie, will you marry me?’” She looked up to find Tim on one knee. The couple married at the Fives, which was perfect for the vibe they were going for. “We were going for laid back, romantic and fun. We had a lot of people travel in for the wedding, and I wanted them to enjoy themselves,” Tim says. “The cigar bar was a huge hit, [also]” Katie says. “The weather was perfect, so Tim and my dad loved being able to go out there and smoke a cigar and enjoy their bourbon.” The couple’s first dance was to Taylor Acorn’s cover of Blink-182’s “First Date,” and they ended the night with the original. With the chorus blasting “Forever and ever / Let’s make this last forever,” the Breeses entered their forever. « SPRING 2024 Columbus Weddings

Kristen + Carson BY ASHLEY ALT PHOTOS BY COURTNEY WILDER Kristen Henderson and Carson Wedlake met while working at the Olive Garden. Carson had been interested in Kristen and finally mustered the courage to ask her out. One evening, as they were leaving work, Carson walked Kristen to her car and asked her out on a date. Kristen said “yes,” and they exchanged numbers. Their first date was Dec. 12, 2012, when they watched a meteor shower that was predicted to take place that night. As they watched the spectacular display in the sky, they talked about their interests and passions, finding out they had a lot in common. Their first date was a success, and they quickly became inseparable. Carson later introduced Kristen to fire spinning, saying “Kristen was immediately fascinated by it,” and that fascination led Kristen to become the performer she is today. Carson supported Kristen and her newfound passion for all things circus. Kristen, in turn, encouraged Carson in his glassmaking artistry. They continued to explore each other’s passions and interests, ultimately leading to successful careers and a lifelong partnership. In 2019, Kristen and Carson grew their family and welcomed their “perfect” daughter, Vera, into the world. The couple got engaged while visiting a Vincent Van Gogh exhibit in 2021. “I was pulled aside in a more private area when Carson popped the question,” Kristen says. For their wedding, they wanted to incorporate their love of art in a way that felt authentic to them. As Kristen is a full-time performer and owner of a pole and aerial studio, the couple decided to have an “elegant, circus-themed wedding,” equipped with stilt walkers, aerialists and a contortionist. “The weather was supposed to be terrible with hail in the forecast, but we got beautiful weather with even a rainbow,” Kristen says of their wedding day. “The performers did such an amazing job bringing a part of my life into the wedding as well.” «

“Garden Party” was the wedding theme for Haley Mucha and Gus Domenick. The couple met at Wittenberg University, where they both studied. “Gus had a work-study job at the gym and I would have to ask him to put the basketball hoops up so I could set up the volleyball nets for the team practice,” Haley says. After Haley’s volleyball season ended, Gus’s fraternity threw a party to celebrate the volleyball team making it to the NCAA tournament (Space Jam-themed), “and this is where we hit it off,” Haley says. “We talked and danced the night away and started dating from there.” The proposal happened in June 2021 when Haley was stationed in Washington state as a travel nurse. Gus was visiting for a long weekend, so the couple ventured to the San Juan Islands. While at the national historic landmark, English Camp, Gus asked some passerby to take their photo with the bay in the background. “There was an eagle overhead which gave Gus the chance to get down on one knee and propose,” Haley says. “We spent the rest of the day exploring, including checking out a lavender farm.” The couple recounts some special moments from their wedding including writing and reading their own vows, a handkerchief from Haley’s great grandma tied around her bouquet, and Gus renting a co2 cannon from Josh Staley Productions. “I had asked the DJ if she had an airhorn sound to play at the reception since it’s a guilty pleasure,” Haley says. “So cheesy, but so fun for the dance floor,” which was mostly filled with the couple’s college friends, along with each of their families.«

What We Believe In SPONSOR A HIGHWAY

We live and work in this community with you and we are upset about how much litter we see on our roadways as much as you are. It’s time to take action, and that is why we have partnered with Sponsor A Highway to clean up 200 miles of freeways every single month right here in our local community. We are picking up 4 tons of trash a month, literally. Please join us in keeping our community clean and safe.

WEARING PRIDE AND HONOR Katie and Evan Standerwick wed July 15, 2023, at the Darby House. The couple incorporated numerous heartfelt touches into their wedding day, many of them visible through Katie’s wedding attire. Most notably, Katie’s father passed away from cancer in July 2019, so the couple attached his wedding band to the base of Katie’s bouquet. “And I wore the tennis bracelet he bought my mother for their anniversary,” Katie says. They also had cut swatches of blue shirts from her late father and late grandfather’s closets stitched into the dress as her “something blue.” Katie’s dress was designed and built by hand from her best friend and co-maid of honor, Madi Spohn, who had recently graduated from fashion school, adding butterfly patches under her train as her own personal touch.
