Or head an hour southeast of Columbus to the

recently renovated R Adventure Park (radventurepark.com), a smorgasbord of outdoor fun. It offers a bevy of activities tailored so the whole family can enjoy them, including ATV riding, a paintball range, a mud run, a zipline rail and the country’s largest ropes course.

Have fun sans family at Playcations, a new recreational play center that offers special, planned playdates for adults. “Play” can mean a lot of things, such as drawing, doing improv, playing Wii and — get this — napping! It sounds like a mirage, but you can find Playcations at 403 W. Main St. in Westerville (hobbyhaven.org). A play session costs $50 an hour, and child care is available starting at $10 an hour.

You know all about Flat Stanley, the accidentally two-dimensional world traveler who first appeared in Jeff Brown’s 1964 children’s book of the same name. Well, you might not know about The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, brought to life in a play to be given its central Ohio premiere by Columbus Children’s Theatre and opening Sept. 18 at its Park Street Theatre. I was homeschooled for just one year. It was third grade, and my mom was homeschooling my fifth-grade brother simultaneously. We usually completed our work side by side at the kitchen table. I have mostly pleasant memories of the experience, but I remember how hard it was not to compare my own progress with my older brother’s — particularly the speed with which he completed his assignments. To a third grader, my brother was writing at lightning speed. I wanted to write fast, too. So I did. My penmanship was terrible, but I got faster. It’s a good thing

we live in a computerized world, because to this day my handwriting could be mistaken for a distracted grade-school student’s scribbles. As a parent, I’ve been surprised to learn that peer pressure starts even earlier than third grade. My son, Liam, is now in first grade, but I noticed his acute awareness of his peers the very first week of kindergarten. When we couldn’t find his Superman lunchbox and attempted to substitute a generic, navy blue lunch bag, he was devastated. When we dressed him in solidcolor T-shirts, he complained they weren’t “cool,” meaning they didn’t have any TV/

movie/video-game characters on them. At home, Liam loves to eat Go-Gurt — those squishy packets of yogurt with cavityinducing flavors like cotton candy and berry lemonade. But whenever I packed one in his school lunch, it always returned home with him. He would tell me he didn’t have time to eat it. After a while, I asked him if there was another reason he wasn’t eating his yogurt, since the whole tube takes about 9 seconds to eat. “Well...,” he said, hesitating, “I never see any of the other kids eating yogurt.” Often, like the yogurt incident, Liam is putting the pressure on himself. Other times his peers are introducing him to previously unknown aspects of the world — aspects I wasn’t ready to reveal to him quite yet. Over the summer he told me how a friend introduced him to something called

the “F-word.” Fortunately he had never heard of such a thing; to Liam, the whole idea of it sounded exaggerated and unbelievable. But seeing him wrestle with such an ugly concept put a hairline fracture in my heart. Peer pressure isn’t always bad. Last year, virtually every boy in Liam’s class was talking about and bonding over Minecraft. I still don’t fully understand the appeal of this video game. (Fortifying my own home takes enough time and energy; I have no desire to Creeper-proof a pixelated version.) But I downloaded it onto the family iPad just the same because it was relatively inexpensive, and I didn’t want to deny Liam the chance to bond with his classmates over a harmless and admittedly creative game. I’m typically not a fan of the “little people, little problems; big people, big

problems” axiom, but it probably applies to some of this. The stakes are pretty small when it comes to Minecraft and superheroes. It’ll get more serious as he grows. My hope is that Liam retains his honest disposition when our heart-toheart conversations about peer crises involve things weightier than Go-Gurt.

And eventually, so did he. I get it. I mean who can hold a candle to the dude who buys you every single fake, overpriced weapon at the most magical place on Earth? (His cache on this trip included two swords, two guns, a light sabre and a knife. I’m unsure how he even got on the plane to return.)

When their car pulled into the gas station, I was jumping (seriously; my kid is in trouble when he is old enough to be embarrassed by me). Coop took one look from his car seat, dropped his head and began to sob. “Momma, can I just have one more week with Papaw, pweeeese?” he cried. “Just one more night?” The tears flowed as we made our way back toward Columbus. Using the best reverse psychology/guilt-tripping I could muster, I looked at Coop in the rear-view mirror.

By night No. 3, I was missing my little guy. “It’s just so weird not to kiss him goodnight,” I told my husband. I knew Cooper’s crazy 4-year-old self was probably still awake, relishing time with his Papaw at Walt Disney World, high off cotton candy and the light parade, definitely not thinking of me. And that was fine. Fabulous, even. But certainly by day five — five — he would be anxious to see his Momma. I was so early to our highway meeting point, I beat my perpetually early father, who was heading south from Akron. I peeled off my jewelry and left it in the cup holder so that when my

Truth is one of the great joys of my life is watching my father with my son. They are ballplayers and superheroes, cowboys and wrestlers. They run around the house shooting invisible bad guys and know each other’s favorite movie scenes. They wear matching freckles and matching outfits, and drink matching smoothies. Your children are back in school, and you want to hear all about it. “What is your teacher like?” “Have you made any new friends?” You’re eager to hear every detail, but your kids are a bit less eager to share. If you’ve ever tried to start a conversation with your kids by asking “How was your day?” and received frustratingly short replies like “fine” or “good,” you’re not alone. Many children have difficulty summarizing an entire day’s worth of activities and, at the beginning of the school year, they may still be processing all that is new. But there are things you can do to encourage your child to open up: Using a mix of specific questions and statements such as “Was recess fun today? Tell me about the game you played” or “This is a beautiful drawing. How did you make the tree look so real?” can help kids focus on a specific aspect of their day and may get a discussion started. Talking about your day will make a conversation interactive. It is important to model the type of communication you are trying to establish with your kids by sharing your interests, friends, challenges and joys (“I worked on a really tough project at work today.”). Reciprocity is key for discussions, even with young kids. Listening without criticizing encourages kids to share their experiences. It Pays Off to Pay Off By Denise Trowbridge The average American family using credit cards is carrying a $15,799 balance, according to the credit-counseling agency Consolidated Credit. The typical Ohioan with student loans graduated with $27,713 in debt. The average new-car loan is $27,000, according to Experian Automotive. The rub: if you’re a typical middle-class American with a credit card, a college degree and a car, you’re in serious debt, and that isn’t even counting the house you live in. For families, it’s too easy to fall into debt. First, kids are expensive, but sometimes we might also be the victims of lifestylethinking, such as “if we’re middleclass, we should own a home, have two cars and a manicured lawn and go out to dinner,” said Cara Hill, a central Ohio division manager for the financial-counseling service Apprisen. All of that, plus things like smartphone data plans, maybe a vacation every year and unexpected car or other expenses, can quickly add up to a life in debt. When you’re stretching your paycheck over a lot of monthly obligations, it can put you in a precarious spot, maybe without enough cushion, and vulnerable to any financial hiccup. “Debt, excluding a mortgage, should never be more than 15 or 20 percent of your budget,” said Hill. If your debt level is higher than that or if you worry about how you are going to pay all of the bills, it’s time to come up with

a plan to reduce and eventually eliminate debt from your life. The first step to debt-free is to stop accruing more debt. “Be realistic about what lifestyle you can actually afford,” Hill said. “Do you need a TV in every room? Does

The key is breaking money habits and forming newer, more productive ones. Once you start trying to cut or change your spending habits, “give it at least 60 days. It’ll take that long to see the results of your effort,” Hill said. “You want to get to a place where you can afford what you have and what you need.” Sticking to a more realistic monthly budget can keep you from acquiring new debt and help you find extra money to pay down the debt you have. Next, prioritize your debts and make a plan to squash them. Rank debts either by highest to lowest interest rates or lowest to highest balances. A “power-play system, where you either pay off the debt with the highest interest rate or the one with the lowest balance first,” works well, Hill said. Once one debt is eliminated, you take the money you used to send to that creditor and add it to the next monthly debt payment on your list. It’s called the “debt snowball” method. As debts get paid off, the monthly payment to the next creditor increases, accelerating payoff. If you’re in a position where you’re using a credit card to pay off another debt or are taking out cash advances, your debt might be too big to tackle on your own. At that point, it’s important to seek help from a nonprofit creditcounseling agency or possibly a bankruptcy expert. Paying off debt “is not impossible, but it takes hard work and determination,” Hill said. “You have to roll your sleeves up but it will be easer to deal with now than later. It’s painful but it’s better in the long run.”

eather Bowman of Columbus cannot remember a vacation that didn’t include her extended family. Since 1994, yearly vacations to Hilton Head Island, S.C., commandeered a spot on the calendar just like a holiday. “It’s just a given that we’re going each year,” said Bowman. “It started as a regular family vacation, and then, as spouses and children came along, it expanded.” Now, Bowman, her husband, Shane, and their two children, Luke (age 6) and Lily (age 2), vacation with her sister, brother-in-law and their child along with her parents. Nine people and three generations is a lot to coordinate, but this family wouldn’t have it any other way. Little did Bowman know that her family enjoys what is coined in vacation circles as “multigeneration travel.” It is a specific kind of destination or travel experience that caters to children, parents and grandparents all at one time. Multigeneration travel is booming in popularity as busy families try to make the most of their limited time together. According to a recent AAA survey on multigenerational travel, more than one-third of travelers (36 percent) plan to take a multigenera-

tional trip in the next 12 months as a way to connect with family. That is a 4 percent increase over last year. More than one quarter of those trips will include at least three generations. “It’s definitely a bonding experience for the kids,” Bowman said. “Being able to watch my parents interact with them is great.” The trick is finding a place that can accommodate the large number of people and, more importantly, cater to the interests and needs of several generations. A place such as Hilton Head Island is perfect because large beach houses that rent by the week have enough room for several families, and there are plenty of activities all in one area. Bowman said there are always children’s activities on the beach as well as at local venues. For instance, the Salty Dog Cafe offers an activity where everyone in the family can tie-dye shirts together. “We have our routine. We go to the pool or the beach, which is fun for all ages, then we go out to dinner,” Bowman said. The payoff is family time that is precious, which is why this kind of travel is so appealing. “I like the tradition of it,” Bowman said. “This is what we’ve always done and we enjoy it.”

Planning Multigeneration Travel

1. Lodging: Find enough space that accommodates the number of people in your group and bed configurations. 2. Family input: Get input from everyone on destinations and activities before making final decisions. 3. Transportation: Instead of driving in a caravan, establish meeting points along the route (like a hotel for the night) so each family unit can travel at their own pace. 4. Food: Reference local guidebooks to get dining ideas early in the week, which makes it easier to accommodate dinner preferences. 5. Private time: Plan time for kids, grandparents and parents to do their own things during your stay. 6. Money: Discuss budget expectations early to determine individual vs. shared expenses. 7. Contingency plans: Take enough toys for each child to play inside if necessary.

Other options that cater to multigeneration travel include: Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Pigeon Forge is about a 6-hour drive from Columbus and there are plenty of multifamily cabins available in the area. Family-friendly attractions include miniature golf courses, the Hollywood Wax Museum (hollywoodwaxmuseum. com/pigeon-forge), rides and stage shows at Dollywood (dollywood.com) and outdoor activities in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park (nps.gov/grsm/index.htm). Condos and cabins have kitchen facilities, but for some good country cooking, there’s also Mama’s Farmhouse (mamasfarmhouse. com) and The Old Mill Restaurant (old-mill.com) with dining facilities that accommodate groups. There are also several dinner show theaters on the main strip. Cruises Many cruise companies are now catering to the multigeneration travel market, designing itineraries and activities that basically offer one-stop shopping for

family time together. Some cruise ships, including Disney Cruise Line’s (disneycruise.disney.go.com) Fantasy and Dream ships, Crystal Cruises (crystalcruises.com) and Aqua Expeditions (aquaexpeditions.com) have even reconfigured cabins to create adjoining family suites. Many cruises now offer flexible dining options, and some even help parents with special requests for picky eaters. Cruises offer the perfect blend of unstructured relaxation time, yet enough on-board activities to keep everyone busy. Lansing, W. Va. For the active families, you can hit Adventures on the Gorge (adventuresonthegorge.com) in 4 hours and a half-tank of gas. The resort area has several levels of lodging options, from four-bedroom deluxe cabins to vacation home rentals on secluded property. Packages are available to bundle lodging, food and activities such as whitewater rafting and ziplines.

“Don’t let go of mommy’s hand and hold on to your sword.” If there’s ever a place where it is appropriate to utter that phrase, it’s at the Ohio Renaissance Festival. Take a quick trip to Harveysburg for the festival (don’t be confused by the Waynesville address — that’s just for the GPS unit), and you’ll see your fair share of children — and adults — wielding faux weapons. The Ohio Renaissance Festival takes place this time each year, and it’s not your average hometown fair. This fest operates like a well-oiled machine, which it has to be to handle the crowds that visit each weekend between Labor Day and the end of October. Since it only takes a little more than an hour to drive there from Columbus, you can easily make the experience a day trip. You definitely don’t have to be a Renaissance-era enthusiast to make the most of the festival, which caters to all ages. Here are some of the can’t-miss highlights:

Jousting: This is probably the first thing that

pops into your mind when you think “renaissance festival,” and here you’re able to see it live and in person. Three times a day, you’ll find a full-armor jousting battle. Here’s a tip: Get to the Arena of Champions early to snag a seat. Otherwise you’ll be standing along the perimeter, where it might be tough to see over the crowd. If you have fidgety children, know that the real action doesn’t begin until a halfhour or so after the start time.

Shows: There are 11 different stages located throughout the festival grounds with dozens of shows each day. Be sure to pick up a map when you enter — there’s a complete schedule with shows and events described by stage and time. Families with older children might enjoy “The Swordsmen,” which is the Renaissance version of slapstick humor.

Food: Come hungry! The food booths and stands aren’t hard to spot, and the prices are reasonable. Most items (in

2013) cost between $5 and $10, and options included chicken tenders and fries, mac and cheese, cheesecake, and of course, giant turkey legs. Adult beverages abound for moms and dads who want something refreshing.

Souvenirs: Dressing up for the Ohio Renaissance Festival is not a requirement, but if you do want to outfit yourself and your family in themed duds, you’ll find clothing, handmade jewelry, accessories and more to rent for the day or buy and take home. Some craftsmen even make goods right before your eyes.

Some other helpful hints? We’ve got ’em: The festival grounds form a big loop, which is walkable in 15 to 20 minutes. There are also paths that cut through the middle, so you can easily get across grounds. Seating is ample to enjoy those turkey legs or if your feet just need a rest. Look for picnic tables and benches scattered throughout.

Many of the festival weekends are themed — visit the website for a full list — and include Romance Weekend and Oktoberfest Weekend. Budgetconscious families may want to visit during opening weekend. Kids 12 and younger get in free those three days only, when typically only those 5 and younger are free.

A host chooses eight, 10 or 12 meals to prepare from an extensive list of freezer recipes, which include vegetarian and glutenfree options. “You can tell these meals are deliciously homemade,” said Katie Harlor, a recent Freezer Meal Party host. Each participant prepays for the party, and then Eakins does the grocery shopping, the chopping and any cooking that needs to be done prior to assembling the meals in freezer bags. Party hosts never have to use their stove. One freezer meal serves three to four people. Pricing ranges from $128 per person for an eight-meal party to $180 for a 12-meal party. A minimum of four guests for a private party is required, and up to 10 guests can be accommodated. Public parties also are scheduled. First-time guest Kari

Irvin said the upfront cost was a hurdle she had to jump but, once she did the math and factored in all the time she was saving, she was sold. After the Freezer Meal Party, which lasts between two and three hours, each guest leaves with their complete

meals ready for the freezer, a checklist with cooking instructions and side-dish ideas to post on the fridge. But the most important benefit, agreed Harlor’s fellow partiers, was freedom from cooking on busy nights of the week. “With four kids and sports schedules, time to cook is hard

to come by,” said Stacy Taylor. “When we were done with all the meals from the first party, I knew I wanted to do it again. I missed the convenience. Plus, we saved money by not binge-spending when I wasn’t prepared,” said Freezer Meal Party veteran Kelly SmithArmstrong.

“I love how excited everyone is to go home with prepped meals,” Eakins said. “And their appreciation that it runs so smooth. The hardest thing you have to do at this party is squeeze the limes.”

In a bowl, mix together: shredded chicken, chiles, lime juice/ zest, onions, cilantro, garlic, sour cream, cumin, chili powder, cayenne, salt, pepper and 1-1/2 cups of the cheddar cheese (set aside the remaining 1 cup of cheese). 3. Spray bottom of a casserole dish with cooking spray. 4. Scoop about 1/2 cup of mixture and spread a thin layer evenly into bottom of pan. 5. Top with torn up pieces of tortilla.

6. Spread half of filling mixture on top of tortilla pieces and sprinkle with half of the remaining cheese. Repeat layers with torn-up tortillas, chicken mixture and cheddar cheese on the top. 7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 10 more minutes or until hot and bubbly. Serves 8-10. TIP: Freezing note: This can be frozen after assembly and thawed for one to two days in the refrigerator before cooking.

Transitioning into the school year can be tough. It happens every fall, yet somehow it can throw families for a loop. What if you could take making dinner off the daily to-do list, yet still have homecooked meals on the table every evening? That’s just one of the ways Stephanie Eakins, founder of Retro Dinner Diva, hopes people will use her service: “When my kids were younger and were in all sorts of sports, people were always shocked that I was still cooking at least five nights a week. I wanted to be able to share those things. Planning was the key.” Eakins has been delivering homemade fresh meals on a weekly basis to people’s doorsteps for the past year. “I began to think of ways to expand and solve more problems around getting great food on the table for your family,” Eakins said. “I know moms like to get together and have fun. ennifer Lachey sees many similarities between Lewisburg, the small Pennsylvania town where she was raised, and New Albany, where she and her husband, Ron, are raising their three children.

“Everybody supports each other and there’s a lot of giving back to the community,” she said. This month the community will rally around The New Albany Classic, an equestrian event that raises money for The Center for Family Safety and Healing. New Albany “is a small community that dreams big,” said Craig Mohre, president of the New Albany Community Foundation. “Our library, the arts center, student lecture series and our communitywide focus on health and wellness are perfect examples of what can happen when volunteers step up to champion projects,” Mohre said. “The enthusiasm of our residents is enormous, and New Albany is a truly special place to call

home as a result.” The Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts is a community asset that visitors will appreciate. The theater draws big-name acts such as Lyle Lovett and Bruce Hornsby and also provides a venue for local performing groups and students. The center hosts the community’s annual lecture series designed to stimulate discussion and enrich the school district’s curriculum. The New Albany/Charlotte P. Kessler branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library anchors one of the town’s most kid-friendly spots — Market Square. The library, which has a full schedule of story hours and special events, is a great place to visit. Local kids often head there after school to study and socialize, Lachey said. The area is home to Learning Express Toys, a store that encourages browsing. Kids and parents are invited to try out toys and games, ask questions or just hang out. “Kids are in there every day,” Lachey said. The square also has a Starbucks, a bicycle shop and an eclectic gift shop. VeloScience Bike Works wants to help

serious cyclists and recreational bikers improve their ride. Tailfeathers Boutique and Three French Hens offers a great dose of stylish clothing and home decor. The shop also has a fun kids’ section with unique gifts and playthings. Visitors will find a warm reception from shopkeepers and restaurateurs throughout the community, Lachey added. Within a few miles of the square are several more inviting shops. Bungalow Home sells furniture, wall hangings, jewelry and interesting home accessories. Vintage Restyled features an everchanging mix of antiques, refinished furniture and unusual finds. The store also offers classes for kids and adults. Classes cover a variety of topics from creating projects found on Pinterest to learning furniture-painting techniques, said owner Shannon Gabor. Previous projects for kids include wooden picture frames and flip-flops. “They used hammers and the sanding block,” she said. “We threw it all at them.” She also hosts private parties for friends who want to work on projects together.

Kids also might enjoy a stop at Oakland Nursery’s New Albany location. In addition to plants and gardening accessories, the nursery sells gift items and knickknacks. For fine jewelry and fine art, visit Hayley Gallery. To create your own masterpiece, register for a class at the Purple Dog Art Studio. For outdoor fun, Lachey suggests hitting the school playgrounds, a destination for local kids even when school is out. The New Albany-Plain Local Schools K-1 building has great playground equipment, added Gabor, a mother of two. The nearby Plain Township Aquatic Center offers warm-weather fun with waterslides, a zero-entry kiddie pool and an interactive water play pool, in addition to a lap-swim pool. Both Thompson Park and Bevelhymer Park have playgrounds and ball fields. Family-friendly dining options include Plate, whose menu features healthy comfort food made with local ingredients, and Ella Restaurant, which changes its menu seasonally and makes its own desserts.

The New Albany Classic As Abigail Wexner became more educated about the cyclical nature of family violence, the lawyer known for her philanthropic work wanted to make a difference. “I wanted to be a part of breaking that cycle,” she said, “which meant raising awareness and resources to support the development of more effective ways to break the cycle while treating victims with respect and restoring hope in their lives.” Wexner came up with the idea of hosting an equestrian show-jumping event that would raise money for the cause and serve as a family-oriented outing. Since 1998, The New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix & Family Day has raised more than $25 million to support the work of The Center for Family Safety and Healing. The people who live and work in New Albany have an exceptional track record of being involved in the community in a meaningful way. The New Albany Community Foundation, the New Albany Women’s Network, the New Albany Farmers Markets, the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts, Healthy New Albany, the New Albany Symphony Orchestra, the New Albany Walking Classic, The Jefferson Series lectures and so much more have all developed from the grassroots level. Our community is extraordinarily active and generous. This year’s event has some exciting new additions. How do you think the presence of the Carousel Works horses will impact the event? I have known about the talented craftsmen at Carousel Works in Mansfield because of the large whimsical animals they crafted for the new Nationwide Children’s Hospital and also the carousel downtown at Columbus Commons. I love their work, and it just seemed like a natural fit to have Carousel Works help us highlight the Year of the Horse at this year’s Classic.

What can families look forward to from the Columbus Children’s Theatre performers who will be making their debut at the event this year? We are so excited to have the performers of the Columbus Children’s Theatre involved in the event this year. The CCT will provide strolling entertainment and mini interactive performances on a stage designed specifically for them. We know the families are just going to love this new addition to our entertainment lineup. Any tips on how families can make the most of their visit to the New Albany Classic? Come early and stay all day! Gates open at 10 a.m. and there is a full day of entertainment with the Tween Brands Concert at The Classic presented by Justice and Brothers starting at 11 a.m. and the Grand Prix starting at 2:30 p.m. The price of admission ($23 for adults and $7.50 for children ages 4- to10-years-old) includes all the rides and other activities, plus the concert and show jumping competition.
