Last month, in our April issue, I asked readers to let us know what they think about the use of the term “special needs” when identifying children with unique medical and/ or developmental challenges. We received some wonderful responses and here are excerpts from a few of them: I read with great appreciation your “Letter from the Editor.” I appreciate that you are sensitive to “labels” and that you thought it important enough to ask parents of children with special needs what our opinion is about the term “special needs”….

I believe the term “special needs” is the appropriate evolution of “disabled” and “handicapped.” We now don’t describe our children as handicapped or disabled, which is a good thing. Our children are children first and can do a lot of the things typical children can do, they just need extra time, help and some accommodations. In those situations, we have to be able to communicate to the person “taking the restaurant or hotel reservation” that our child has special needs. It simply paves the way for a smoother experience no matter what the experience we are about to enter is. In visual situations, most of the time, no words are needed as it is obvious that [my daughter] Maria, and others like her, is special. Most people are very kind and understanding.

March saw the debut of a new interactive education

center in Powell, the Inventure! Kids’ Science Lab (10235 Sawmill Parkway). The lab offers two- to three-hour classes (register at inventure sciencelab.com) that focus on making science, technology, engineering and math relatable and fun — musical science and kitchen chemistry are just a couple of the subjects on the agenda. Most classes are around $25 per kid, and event space and party programming are also available.

Another fun Powell stop is Legacy Paper Arts. And during one Saturday afternoon a month, the paper-crafting store hosts a “Creative Cafe.” Make a $1 donation and you’ll get access to myriad cool supplies for designing and

In this production, the audience becomes part of the action on stage, from oiling the Tin Man to stuffing the Scarecrow to hiding Dorothy from the Wicked Witch in a forest of their own creation.

This is an engaging introduction to the theater for young audiences — although you might have to teach your kids that the audience won’t always be this much a part of the show! The show’s run concludes May 2-4.

Many people are familiar with the idea of the brain having left and right hemispheres, where logic and emotion respectively reside. The whole-brain child also addresses the upstairs and downstairs brain, where the more complex and sophisticated functions are upstairs business and the more primitive, fight-or-flight functions are downstairs business. Parents can use brain science to help with everything from tantrums to arguments and even to improve everyday experiences like conversations about the day: for example, instead of “How was your day?”, try “What was the best part of your day?” This approach will tap into the memory functions of the developing brain to invite more meaningful connection and conversation.

May is a great month to energize our creativity!

Our wonderful winter is behind us. Flowers and trees are budding and blossoming. Sun is brightening up our days. Creativity is about making choices, arranging things, problem solving, exploration and experimentation. Creativity is about playfulness and the courage and spirit to “mess around” with ideas and materials.

Recently after a teachers’ workshop, one of my colleagues shared this very sad story. Her 4-year-olds were painting pictures — trees, flowers, clouds, birds.

One of the parents who came to pick up her child looked at the children’s colorful works and complained, “Some of the skies are purple. Trees are NOT this color.

Is this a good idea to let the children just paint anything they want even if it doesn’t respond to reality?”

Harry Chapin’s powerful song Flowers Are Red is a perfect response to this parent’s concern. The little boy is painting flowers of all colors. His very rigid teacher admonishes him, “Flowers are red. Green grass is green.” She says there is no reason to paint flowers any other colors. The little boy tells her there are so many colors in the rainbow, in the morning sun, in the flowers and he sees every one. After a while, he is told he is disobedient and, after sitting by himself, he paints

Louie Lessons

By Joel Oliphint I said goodbye to Louie at 2 p.m. on a Saturday, holding him close and telling him what a good boy he was as he let out a big sigh and fell asleep for the last time on a pile of blankets in a small room.

Untreatable cancer took our big yellow Lab — known even in his old age as “Louie puppy” or “the puppy dog” — a month shy of his 10th birthday.

Liam, 6, and Maggie, 4, knew beforehand that Louie was going to a serious doctor appointment and that he was very sick. When I returned home with just a leash and a collar, we all collapsed into tears on the kitchen floor.

My wife, Kate, and I took the kids to The Lego Movie that afternoon to give them an emotional breather. We went out to dinner, too, because home was full of heartbreaking reminders.

When we returned that evening, Kate and I instinctually approached the gate that

keeps our yard fenced in, then realized latching wasn’t necessary. Inside, dog hair lined our hallways and the dog bowl was full of food that Louie had barely sniffed.

I held Liam on the couch as he cried, answering questions when they arose, but mostly pointing him to all the lovable, quirky things about the puppy dog — how Louie would give us his paw if we prematurely stopped rubbing his chest; how he would emit what can only be described as a dog purr; how he had the silkiest, floppiest ears but didn’t like it when you messed with them.

The kids have no memory of Louie before he had lame hind legs, but they smiled as Kate and I told them how he used to run in circles like a lunatic in the backyard.

When the communal grief got to be too much we tried to redirect the kids’ energies toward a game of Skylanders on the Wii, but eavesdropping on that was just as hard for Kate and me. Brother and sis-

ter were working through their pain aloud as they played.

“He was the best dog in the whole world. He loved everybody,” Liam said.

“Yeah, anybody,” Maggie replied.

“Maggie, you’re blinking.

You need more life.”

“Come closer! I can’t get over there, Liam.”

“We’ll never see him again.”

“Never. We can get another dog maybe.”

“Yeah, but we’ll never forget Louie though.”

“I thought we’d have good news when Louie came back from the doctor.”

“But we had bad news. Really bad news. The worst news ever.”

“I love Louie.”

“I love Louie.”

A few months ago I wrote about my kids’ lack of a relationship with our dog, describing Liam’s attitude toward Louie as “indifferent.” Turns out I vastly underestimated the connection they had. I shouldn’t have measured the

relationship by how much time Liam and Maggie spent with Louie. Death is still a somewhat abstract concept to them, so I think they operated as if he would always be there.

They never knew life without him.

Kate works at the zoo, and her boss speaks often about the positive impact pets have on kids and how much it teaches them about animals. I knew that was true for myself, but I didn’t realize how true it was for my kids.

I thought they’d take a more active role in caring for Louie, which in retrospect was an

unrealistic expectation. What I didn’t realize was how much they cared about Louie. They didn’t fill his food bowl every day or initiate games of fetch, but they loved him in ways that didn’t become clear to me until he was gone. And if I had to choose between my kids learning about responsibility or about love from Louie, I’ll choose love any day.

Actually, if I wrote a book on parenting in general, this would be its title. For good reason. Same goes in Disney.

If you are relying on overpriced ice cream treats that aren’t nearly as available as one might think to get you through this trip, you are going to regret it.

Remember who the trip is for. Again, easier said than done, because we all know you speny a pretty penny to make this the perfect vacation you dreamed it to be. But if your kid just wants to play in the hotel pool all day, or ride Pirates of the Caribbean five times in a row, or skip the

big-picture pointers on taking the 5-and-younger set: Live in the moment. This is easier said than done.

Nearly all other tips circle back to this idea.

Do not schedule anything — no breakfasts with Mickey, dinners with royalty or otherwise expensive events that require you to be at a particular place at a particular time.

There are too many landmines to do this to yourself — accidents that force you to return to your room to change clothes, bus running late, your kid’s nap schedule whackily off thanks to long drive/ flight/general excitement.

Operate on a 15-minutesor-less policy. If a line is 15 minutes or less, the ride’s a

I stood in the cafeteria line at our Walt Disney World resort, my simultaneously exhausted and exhilarated then-3-year-old gently grasping my hand.

Behind us, a woman began yelling — I’m not lying, yelling — at her bewildered husband, who she was certain picked the wrong food line to wait in first.

(Because, you know, waiting an extra three minutes in a line at Disney is totally worth screaming over.)

Almost simultaneously, a woman in front of us slapped one of her two antsy kids. (Because, you know, over-tired, over-sugared kids at Disney should be expected to behave

perfectly.)

Ah, the most magical place on Earth indeed!

I’m not any more a parenting expert than any of you, and goodness knows I still haven’t figured out how to get my now-4-year-old to sit still at dinner. But a few trips to Disney have taught me valuable lessons in how to avoid the point where you’re screaming, slapping or begging your kid to pick Epcot, where you know you can grab a good beer in Germany. (Actually, there’s nothing wrong with that third point. Lure them there with the Nemo ride and the opportunity to talk to Crush, then enjoy your drink.)

No matter where father and son Tom and Ethan Jones are going, they often stop along the way and hunt for hidden treasure. In other words, they go geocaching.

“When everyone is a kid, you dream of finding buried treasure,” said Ethan, 15. “This is the closest you can get to it.”

The Worthington pair said they pull out their Global Positioning System (GPS) units and track down coordinates for hidden treasures while running weekend errands, visiting family and, yes, even on vacation.

Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt that has become a popular pastime, likely because there is no age limit, it’s easy to do and can be done almost anywhere in the world.

Here’s how it works: Using a smartphone app or a handheld GPS unit, players use coordinates they find online to search for “caches.” Caches are basically containers as large as a tin ammunition box or as small as a tiny locket. The smallest finds are known

in the geocaching world as “micro” or “nano” caches.

Inside (or near) each cache is a log where geocachers mark their names and can also read who else has been there before them. Many caches are filled with small trinkets that range from stickers and rubber balls to bracelets and tiny figurines. The idea is to take something but then also leave something behind to add to the collection for the next person who finds it. Geocachers then register their finds online at sites such as geocaching.com.

Passionate geocachers, such as Tom and Ethan, said what drives them is the thrill of the hunt and never knowing what treasures they will find.

“If I am going somewhere,” Ethan said, “I look to see if there are any (caches) around and hunt for them if I have time.”

This includes family vacations and visits to grandma’s house in Cleveland, where the Joneses said they stop at every rest area along the way to search for caches. Needless to say, those

drives from Columbus take a little longer than two hours.

In addition to adding extra commuting time to their destinations, the father and son said it is now the norm to plan extra time while visiting someplace to search for caches in nearby parks and cities.

Vacation planning for the family means devoting almost as much time to plotting geocache coordinates as booking flights and rental cars. This summer, they plan to vacation in Seattle, which is considered the center of the geocaching phenomenon (it began 14 years ago near Portland, Ore.). Ethan already has plotted the GPS coordinates for caches he hopes to find there.

While the Joneses plan their geocaching around their vacations, some enthusiasts plan their vacations around geocaching. According to Geocaching. com, more than 6 million people worldwide are on the hunt for 2.3 million caches, and geocaching vacations are booming. Custom GeoTours in places such as British Columbia and Florida

showcase the destination through geocaching explorations. There are also official “Mega Events” around the world in which more than 500 geocachers congregate in specific destinations to search for caches. For many, collecting new geocache loggings is akin to collecting exotic new stamps in a passport.

The Joneses now have more than 170 cache finds under their belts. It all began as a family hobby two years ago when Ethan, bored on a summer day, decided to try the activity. The geocaching bug bit quickly and it has now become a special father-son experience to share.

“I had been looking for things to do with the kids,” said Jones. “In this day and age, it is hard to find family things to do that aren’t electronically linked.”

After several years, hundreds of finds, dozens of new destinations and even a Boy Scout merit badge, it is safe to say that geocaching has changed family time and family vacations for the Joneses forever.

Nelsonville Music Festival

Music festivals can be loud, crowded, even dangerous places for kids. Not the Nelsonville Music Festival. This weekendlong fest, which takes place May 29 to June 1, is located just an hour southeast of Columbus and is tailor-made for kids, who get in free if they’re 12 and under.

Organizers say making the festival family-friendly was a goal from the very beginning.

“It’s something, to be honest, we all noticed not being prevalent at other festivals,” said Brian Koscho, marketing director for the festival. “I don’t even know if we ever discussed not doing this kind of stuff. As we were planning that first weekend festival (in 2005), we wanted it to be an inclusive environment where anyone can come.”

The festival is a production of Stuart’s Opera House, a renovated 1879 theater in downtown Nelsonville. The facility has been revitalized in recent years with a steady stream of music, theater and dance performances, not to mention an education program that brings more

than 6,000 students per year through the nonprofit arts center’s doors.

The festival began nine years ago as a one-day event in downtown Nelsonville and has grown to a full weekend festival (Thursday night to Sunday evening) held on the beautiful campus of Hocking College. Performers have ranged from iconic country acts such as Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn to indie-rockers Mudhoney and Yo La Tengo, plus numerous singersongwriters and Ohio bands. Of the acts announced so far, this year’s headliners are the Avett Brothers, The Head and the Heart, Dinosaur Jr. and Jason Isbell.

Nelsonville’s kid-friendliness extends to more than harmonica workshops.

There’s an entire children’s area run by Ellen Hadley, an art teacher at Federal Hocking Secondary School in Athens County, and a bevy of volunteers.

“Over the last six years, it has grown from two high school art and drama teachers with 11 student volunteers making a mural, twirling fire and telling ghost stories,” Hadley said, “to last year

when we had 20 teachers leading 27 students in running seven activity areas with a variety of programming all of the days of the festival.”

Some of the programming for this year’s festival was still being finalized as this story went to print, but there will be age-appropriate workshops to please kids 8 years and younger (yoga, a mural, science experiments, dress-up stations, theater games) as well as older elementary up to high school ages (yoga for teens, a photo booth, video blogging, journaling and reading spots, and a “Postcards from the Festival” project).

One of the highlights each year is an all-ages parade on Saturday, and this year kids can make masks for themselves and/or help prepare giant masks for parade characters to wear.

Children can have their faces painted, interact with huge puppets and watch fire-twirlers at night — all for free. In previous years, balloon artist Dizzy Doc also set up under a tree and made free creations for kids, and the Bindlestiff

Family Cirkus put on performances with tightrope walkers and acrobatics every few hours.

When face-painted children roam the grounds shirtless with balloon jetpacks on their backs, it lends the entire festival a casual, laid-back vibe, especially during the day. (If you plan to camp, there’s also a section set aside for family camping.) Because of that safe, easygoing atmosphere, little ones don’t have to stay cordoned off in the kids’ area the entire weekend.

“Even if the parents want to watch a few bands, there’s a good way to trick the kids into chilling out,” Koscho said, laughing. “And then moms and dads can see some bands they want to see, too.”

Families often bring blankets and claim spots in the grassy field by the main stage or in the shade of the porch stage. But with dance-inducing bands such as the Latin fusion of Grupo Fantasma or the New Orleans brass/funk hybrid of the No BS Brass Band, your kids may not stay put for long.

Beyond the Festival With Hocking Hills nearby, there are numerous family-friendly activities the weekend of the Nelsonville Music Festival. Even if you hunker down the whole weekend without leaving the fest, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway (ohiobikeways.net/adena.htm) goes right through the festival grounds. With 18 miles of paved bike path, you can go many miles or a half-mile; a short walk will feel like a world away amid the beautiful woods and wildflowers.

Downtown Nelsonville’s historic arts district (nelsonvillemainstreet.com) is walkable via the bike path or a short drive, and Athens (athensohio.com) and Ohio University (ohio.edu) are about a 20-minute drive southeast from Nelsonville. Older kids might enjoy an adventure exploring Athens’ the Ridges (ohio.edu/athens/greens/theridges.html), formerly a 19th-century asylum.

Stroll through the cemeteries or visit the Kennedy Museum of Art, housed in Lin Hall at the Ridges. Be careful, though: Locals swear the old asylum is haunted.

Plenty of trail-filled attractions are an easy drive from the festival, too. Koscho recommends Ash Cave in Hocking Hills State Park (thehockinghills.org), which is the largest recess cave in Ohio. Ash Cave’s paths are ADA-accessible, also making it one of the more kid-friendly options. Old Man’s Cave and Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve are close by in the same state park.

he end of the school year is getting closer and while some kids look forward to swimming and summer camp, some kids know that summer vacation means going hungry.

“Summertime is the time we all forget. The kids are out of school for eight or nine weeks,” said Matt Habash, CEO of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. “In school they’ve had breakfast, lunch, and possibly even an afternoon snack.

All of a sudden they go home and they’re missing those opportunities to feed themselves.”

About 45 percent of Ohio’s school-aged children receive free or reduced-price meals at school, meals that disappear during summer vacation. If this is a cause that’s close to your heart, May is a great month to help central Ohio food banks and pantries meet growing need this summer. But the working mom knows that the house must get cleaned, errands need to be run and dinners have to be prepared.

Rather than try to do it all, the Clintonville mother hires people to help her and husband Scott Sears manage their household.

As a dentist who owns her own practice, Vincer Sears had a cleaning service even before her children were born.

Since the arrival of 18-month-old Scotty and 5-month-old Stella, she has added other helpers.

“It’s been gradual,” she said. “You just start to realize you can’t do it all.

You slowly figure out what help you need.”

The idea of outsourcing household chores has taken off as busy moms and dads try to manage chores, kids and work, said Cheryl Reed, director

of communications for Angie’s List, a company that offers online compilations of consumer reviews for household services.

“It is absolutely happening more,” said Reed from her office in Indianapolis. “People are realizing their time is valuable.”

Vincer Sears spends about $2,000 a month on help. She sees the money as an investment in her family.

“You have to pick what you want to do and what your priorities are,” she said.

Getting started Begin by deciding what you hope to accomplish by hiring help, Reed said: “What are you looking for? An extra hour a day? An extra day in the week?”

Once you have a goal in mind, make a list of all the chores that need to be done and determine how much time they take, suggested Julia Romanow, an editor at the proudworkingmom.com blog.

Consider hiring someone to do things that take up the most time or that you really dislike doing, said Romanow, a lawyer and mother of two in Castle Rock, Colo.

Housecleaning Cleaners are one of the most popular services people hire, Reed said.

People love coming home to a clean house, said Tanya Adair, owner of Tidy Moms Cleaning Service in Delaware.

She encourages clients to ask for whatever help they need. She will spring clean, organize drawers and closets, or do laundry.

“I try to be very flexible,” she said.

Professional cleaning costs about $120 a visit, according to Angie’s List.

Food preparation Patricia Witman was considering cutting her hours at work when she discovered Dinner Rescue Crew, a company that prepares, packages and delivers wholesome meals throughout central Ohio. Witman, a doctor at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and her husband, Richard Gumina, realized it made financial sense to pay chef Melissa Hura and her team to make meals for the family.

“We easily justified the cost,” said Witman, who was commuting from Powell to downtown Columbus and arrived home too late to start dinner. Hura’s fees were similar to eating out, and she

uses quality, fresh ingredients, said the mother of four.

“It all comes down to time management. It took a lot of stress out of my life,” said Witman, who recently moved to Bexley and uses Hura less frequently now because she arrives home from work in time to cook.

Many clients turn to Hura because they want to feed their families nutritious meals but don’t have time to prepare them, she said.

“Usually it’s the mom who is really concerned about what’s going into the kids’ bodies,” Hura said.

She customizes each family’s meals to their likes, dislikes and dietary restrictions. She also will grocery shop for her clients.

Dinner Rescue Crew’s charges vary, but a family of four could buy enough food for three nights of meals for $399.

Pet services Cleaning up after pets is another chore that Angie’s List users have begun to hire someone to do, Reed said. The company started compiling lists of pet waste removal services because so many customers were asking about them, she added.

If you or your family does not want to clean up after pets, it’s a good idea to pay a professional to do it, agreed Martin Deely, executive director of the International Association of Canine Professionals, headquartered in Lampasas, Texas.

“It can cause a hygiene problem,” he said.

The organization maintains a large list of professional services that pet owners can purchase.

Services range from dog walking to grooming to dog sitting.

Waste removal costs about $15 per week for one pet, according to Angie’s List.

After the birth of her son, Vincer Sears found it difficult to run errands. She disliked dragging the baby in and out of stores. She opted to pay one of her employees to do errands for her. It’s a relief to know things will get taken care of but to have them off her plate, she said.

“The parents are able to sit back and watch,” said Marsh, owner of Three Cheers, a children’s event planning service in Worthington.

She offers varying levels of help. She can make all the arrangements and run the party or just take on certain tasks. She usually works with parents to identify a theme and location for the party.

If parents opt to have it at home, she helps with the itinerary and activities.

“I have a time-tested flow that works really well — an order of

riving around Franklinton, you’re likely to see original works of art — many of which are created during the historic neighborhood’s Urban Scrawl.

During the annual event, to be held Aug. 23 and 24 this year, artists and community members come together to paint, dance and celebrate.

The temporary installations — often paintings on large pieces of wood — help beautify the community and celebrate the artists who have been among the first to move into the neighborhood that is in the midst of a revival.

“The artist community is often on the front lines of community revitalization,” said Jeff Mohrman, assistant director at the Franklinton Development Association.

Interest in the neighborhood, which is home to COSI Columbus, has been growing since the completion of the floodwall in 2004. The neighbor-

hood, located along the Scioto River, has experienced several devastating floods, said Brenda St. Clair, president of the Franklinton Arts District. Locals hope the floodwall project, which took nearly two decades to complete, will encourage new construction.

The best way to check out the neighborhood’s public art is to follow the Franklinton Art Walk map produced by the city of Columbus. Families will find plenty of fun throughout the West Side neighborhood, St. Clair and Mohrman said.

St. Clair steers visitors to 400 West Rich Street, a renovated factory whose address doubles as its name, which houses nearly 100 art and design studios. The facility also is home to Dinin’ Hall, an innovative approach to food truck dining. From May to November, two food trucks or a food truck and a food cart are invited to sell food in the parking lot. Diners can enjoy their meals at tables inside the building.

Dinin’ Hall also operates during the

400 Farmers Market, held the second and fourth Saturday of each month.

The market offers produce, art and other handmade items.

In the fall, Glass Axis will relocate to Franklinton. The glassblowing studio will offer classes, host exhibits and sell glass items at its new 12,500-squarefoot space.

Another exciting venue coming to the neighborhood this spring is the Columbus Idea Foundry, Mohrman said.

His organization worked with the Idea Foundry to secure a $350,000 grant to relocate the community workshop and “makerspace” to a former motorcycle dealership and shoe factory on West State Street (the move should be complete by mid-May). The Idea Foundry offers unique classes that use sophisticated equipment such as welding, woodworking or 3-D printing, Mohrman said.

It will be a nice complement to COSI, he added.

COSI spokeswoman Jaclyn Reynolds agreed.

“It’s a great thing,” she said. “We’re excited to see the changes coming into the neighborhood.”

Families will want to check out The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, on display at COSI through Sept. 1. The exhibition allows guests the chance to solve a crime, perform experiments and see artifacts related to the fictional detective.

Families have several dining options. For breakfast and lunch, check out Tommy’s Diner. The family-owned restaurant serves omelets, sandwiches and freshly made desserts.

Phillip’s Original Coney Island is another unique dining spot. The restaurant’s signature hot dog is topped with mustard, onion, Coney sauce and cheese. It also serves hand-dipped milkshakes and locally made pies.

For outdoor fun, Mohrman recommends the playground at Avondale Elementary School.

“It’s kind of our Central Park,” he said. “On nice days, it’s where the kids go and play.”

Dinin’ Hall

While working at their architecture-design studio at 400 W. Rich St. in Franklinton, Eliza Ho and Tim Lai noticed a lack of nearby dining options.

The couple enjoys eating at food trucks, but often wished the trucks offered seating.

They realized they could combine their needs and create a new business at 400 West Rich Street, the multifunctional arts complex in a converted warehouse within walking distance of Downtown.

In 2012, they opened Dinin’ Hall. From May to November, two food trucks or a food truck and a food cart park at the facility. Diners order from the vendors and then head into the cafeteria that Ho and Lai created to pay and sit at a table. Runners bring the food to customers once it’s prepared, Ho said.

“The owner of the building really liked the idea of Dinin’ Hall,” she said. “He let us have the space at a reduced rate.”

inda Resnik’s daughter celebrated her eighth birthday with a bit of pampering, dancing and plenty of giggles at Sweet & Sassy, a salon that caters to girls at Polaris Fashion Place.

It was the ideal celebration for Melanie, who loves all things “girly,” said the Columbus mother. Resnick’s daughter and her three friends got makeovers, had their nails painted, made lip gloss and walked the runway.

“The amount of giggles at the party told me it was a huge success,” said Resnick, who opted to host a smaller party to take advantage of Sweet & Sassy’s Mini-Party package.

The venue has parties at a variety of price points.

How You Do It 1. Fold the stack of blank copy paper in half from top to bottom. (Older kids can fold multiple sheets at once and younger ones may have to go one sheet at a time). Turn the sheets so they form a booklet with the spine on the left side. If you’ve separated the pages to make folding easier, make sure to restack them together.

2. The card stock sheet will be your cover. To make a clean crease, we’ll employ a butter knife and ruler.

(Professional book binders use a tool called a “bone folder” to achieve the same result.) Place the ruler in the middle of the card stock along where you want the fold to be. Run the back side of the butter knife along the ruler to create an indentation in the card stock. The indentation is your “valley” and the bump created on the other side is your “mountain.” Fold the card stock so the “valley” is on the outside.

3. Put the card stock around the pages like a cover. Cut the booklet in half to make two rectangle-shaped booklets.

4. Open the booklet to the center and use a hole-puncher to make holes about one inch from the top and bottom along the spine. If you punch pages separately, use the holes from the first page you punched as a guide to make sure they all line up!

Goodale Park The only “bathrooms” available are two nearby Porta-potties. But what makes Goodale Park a destination that will remain etched in your kids’ mental hard drives is the elephants fountain on the north end of the park. It’s just flat-out cool — and, on Sunday afternoons in warmer months, the fountain oversees the outdoor “Music in the Air” concert series (which often includes craft activities and food trucks).

The park also has plenty of picnic tables, a gazebo, tennis courts and an open-air shelter (the historic “shelterhouse”/building in the center of the park is not open to the public, but is available for rental). And there’s a magnolia grove that is wonderful for playing in.

One word of warning:

Lots of folks walk their dogs here and “direct control” rules apply, so

What would a city be without its playful oases of green? Downtown Columbus — and the Victorian Village neighborhood, to be precise — has a great oasis in Goodale Park. This 32acre, 163-year-old park sits just north of Interstate 670, which lends a soundtrack of humming traffic to the beautiful scenery in the park and the horizon of skyscrapers to the south.

Depending on how busy the park is, free parking (though not a lot of it) is available at the park’s center near the two playgrounds (one suitable for the wee ones, the other for older kids).

The drivable entrance into the park is reached on Park Street, but there is plenty of metered parking on the perimeter.

The playgrounds are nothing unusual.
