Columbus Children’s Theatre presents the hilarious The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Nov. 28-Dec. 21 in its Park Street Theatre. Follow a well-meaning couple attempting to stage a church Christmas pageant while working with the Herdman family, possibly the most inventively awful kids in history. And then CATCO/ CATCO is Kids presents the holiday classic A Christmas Carol Dec. 3-21 in the Riffe Center’s Studio One Theatre. This unique adaptation features live actors and puppetry in a delightful display of holiday cheer.

When Kate and I moved into our Clintonville home nine years ago, the place seemed so big. We were moving into a three-bedroom house from a Delaware County rental that had two rooms total. Even after inheriting some well-loved furniture from friends and relatives, the new house still felt empty.

Following in the footsteps of countless other young, house-poor couples with halfempty homes, we made our way to the closest Ikea, which, in those days, was a threehour drive to Pittsburgh. We didn’t have much of an eye for cohesive design aesthetics yet,

but we did our best, packing my father-in-law’s minivan with a couch, coffee table, bookshelves and two chairs, one of which we precariously strapped to the top of the van.

I spent most of the drive home checking my rearview mirror and praying our new corduroy recliner wouldn’t cause a 20car pileup on I-70.

I still love living in Clintonville, and I still love our home. But it no longer feels big now that we’re a family of four. Even after an extensive basement renovation, space is tight. This becomes especially true over the holidays, when generous relatives bestow enough gifts on our kids to last a decade. Every December,

all the baskets and bins and closets begin rumbling with volcanic activity, eventually spewing forth in a violent, tripping-hazard eruption.

And so it was that Kate and I recently found ourselves en route to Ikea once again in search of space-saving designs at prices so cheap you almost forget that every piece will come in a cardboard box and require Allen wrenches, a master’s degree in pictorial interpretation and a supernatural restraint for littering obscenities in front of your children.

(Also those $1 cinnamon rolls are amazing.) The trip helped stymie the entropy; I’m hopeful we can keep the volcanoes dormant this year.

Accumulating possessions to the point we run out of space is a first-world problem if ever there was one. I’d bet that when our house was built in the 1940s, a family of five could have lived there quite comfortably (and probably did), even without Swedish furniture. A tendency toward American excess is part of the reason we’ve remained in our small home. I like that it makes us live more simply. I like that we’re forced to get rid of stuff before our basement resembles an episode of Hoarders. I like that there’s no wing to retreat to when family relationships become strained; arguments have to be resolved before long, because avoiding each other just isn’t an option.

I grew up in small houses, and I’m sure that influences my thinking, too. As a kid, most of my friends had larger homes with huge rec rooms

and un-shared bedrooms, but they often commented that they liked coming to my house because it felt cozy and homey — especially over the holidays, when my mom always had gingerbread cookies and spiced tea on hand for guests.

My hope is that, with a little help from my Swedish friends every few years, my house can feel the same way.

Closing doors and turning off heat to rooms you aren’t using, cleaning and replacing the furnace filter once a month, and adding more insulation to the attic and walls also are effective.

Sometimes cutting usage to the bone still isn’t enough. If the bill comes and there just isn’t any money to pay it, there are options. The first step is to “call the utility company and see what they say,” DeMatteo said. They may be able to sign you up for a level-billing program, which spreads the cost of higher bills over the entire year and creates a more stable monthly payment. They also may sign you up for a bill-forgiveness program or direct you to local agencies that provide heating assistance.

The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel is the central spot to look for heating-assistance programs: Check out their website (www.occ.ohio.gov) or call their hotline (1-877-742-5622) for help. They can help with information on programs such as the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP Plus) or the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and can help with the paperwork needed to qualify for those that require medical certification, DeMatteo said.

If you need help, pursue it. “Heat isn’t something you can do without,” DeMatteo said. “A $400 emergency is enough to send most families over the brink. Every winter is terrible if you are on that bubble. (The bills) are enough to send families spiraling into trouble.”

Stay out of trouble. As with all money matters, calling your provider and asking for help sooner rather than later yields better results.

Dec. 22 marks the official start of winter, and the memories of last year’s polar vortexes and the heating bills that came with them probably still sting.

If there is any silver lining, it’s that the U.S. Department of Energy expects this winter to be milder, and homeheating costs to be 5 percent lower for homes that heat primarily with natural gas; 15 percent lower for heating oil; 27 percent lower for propane; and 2 percent lower if heating with electricity.

Winter utility bills can still bite, though. Luckily, there are many low- and no-cost ways to lower utility bills, and there are places to turn for help if the bill is astronomical and there is just no way to pay it.

First, set out to lower the bill. For starters, turn down your thermostat.

The U.S. Department of Energy said you can shave up to 1 percent off your heating bill for each degree you lower your thermostat. They recommend setting it at 68 degrees while you are home and lower (by as much as 10 to 15 degrees) when you are at work or school. The notion that any energy savings are erased when the furnace kicks on to heat up the house again is false.

Another free tip is to keep “curtains open during the day to let the sun in, then close them at night to prevent heat loss,” said Betsy DeMatteo, a consumer educator with Ohio State University Extension.

She also recommends low-cost solutions such as sealing air leaks around doors, windows and outlets: “Anything you can do to block air, even putting plastic over windows, will reduce heat loss.”

Balancing Grief and Joy Loss of a loved one leaves a void at the holidays

y husband lost his courageous, nearly yearlong fight against stage IV pancreatic cancer in September 2013, leaving behind three beautiful children, ages 7 to 13. In less than four months after his passing, each one of us celebrated a birthday, I acknowledged a wedding anniversary and we all marked two major holidays.

For the sake of my children, and in honoring my husband, I made a conscious decision to make the holidays more than “just something to get through.” However, if canceling the holidays this season best suits you and your family as you grieve the loss of a loved one, that’s OK, too. Grief journeys are as unique as the individuals grieving. Choosing to have a quiet holiday at home with your immediate family this year doesn’t mean you won’t be ready to join the crowds for the annual gatherings next season.

Let others know what you need

Friends and family desperately want to be there for you but may not know how to help. Taking time to let those around you know what you need allows them to feel helpful and for you to

receive the support that’s most beneficial at the time. It may be as simple as asking a friend to join you in putting up decorations, wrapping gifts or baking the cookies your children said they can’t live without. Don’t hesitate to ask someone to take the kids for a day so you can simply rest, too.

Do not set expectations

Unfortunately it’s natural to set great expectations for what the holidays will be, only to be disappointed when they don’t quite reach perfection.

After the loss of a loved one, planning your holidays without expectations is wise. You may find more joy and laughter than you expected. Or maybe the holiday season is more difficult for you or your children than you anticipated and it’s necessary to alter plans and events. That’s OK. Flexibility will be the new theme in your days.

Seek input from Your children

Children grieve differently than adults. It is imperative to ask how they would like to spend a particular holiday or special occasion. The family should discuss together what, if anything, they would like to change about the day.

Children need to know and feel they are an important entity in the family unit.

They need their thoughts and feelings validated by those around them.

Enjoy traditions, old and new

There is great comfort for children and adults alike in keeping with tradition. Your family might prefer the same activities, foods and gatherings as in the past because so much has already changed in your lives. You may opt for a change of venue for the holiday meal or invite others along on special outings to help fill the void. If you had always talked about doing something different in the past, now might be a great time to implement the change.

Honor your loved one

There are several ways you may choose to honor your loved one. Lighting a special candle next to your loved one’s picture can acknowledge they remain with you. Making or purchasing a special ornament in memory of your loved one has been a favorite of many.

Attending a memorial service is another way to remember your loved one. A donation to his or her favorite charity is yet another way to pay tribute.

Simplify, simplify, simplify

Life can be turned upside down after the loss of a loved one. You may be more exhausted than energized. The seven types of cookies and candies you prepared every year are no longer real-

istic. Putting up five of the 20 boxes of decorations will suffice. There is room to simplify in every aspect of our lives.

A variety of resources, both local and online, are available to assist adults, children and families in grief:

Rehearsals are scheduled for Sundays through Thursdays most weeks. On Sundays, Goldsmith writes a schedule for the week to come based on which scenes need the most work. He also doesn’t hesitate to stop work on a scene.

“You have to be careful not to overwork a scene and lose the spark,” he said.

On the evening of Oct. 26, two weeks into the process, the entire cast gathered at CCT’s downtown Columbus home for its first “rough-thru,” a stop-and-start practice of the entire 55-minute play during which the actors can still use scripts and Goldsmith can adjust the blocking (i.e., movement patterns).

Sam Blosser, who plays the minister’s beleaguered son Elmer Hopkins, is a first-timer in CCT productions, though he has performed in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever before with a home-school performing arts group.

The 10-year-old Clintonville resident later confessed he’s had to resist the temptation to memorize all his lines right away.

“Bill tells us at the first rehearsal to not memorize your lines because they might change,” Sam said. But the hardest part, he added, has been the stage directions — not learning them but writing them down.

“There’s no flat surface to write on,” Sam said.

The rehearsals fluctuate between entire-cast sessions and evenings when just a handful of actors are needed.

The six young actors playing the Herdmans probably have the most demanding schedule, but Ellie said the cast’s camaraderie makes it doable.

“It helps me relax,” she said, “knowing we’re all in this together.”

And then the shows begin. The cast will work without understudies. Yet, despite the grind of 27 shows over 24 days, sometimes with three shows on one day, the actors — young and not-as-young — rarely miss a show, Goldsmith said.

“I think it’s adrenaline,” said Ellie.

“And we know we can rely on each other because everyone in this cast is so strong.”

Ellie Levine, a 16-year-old from New Albany, performed in the 2012 production as one of the well-behaved Sunday school choir members. This time, when she showed up to audition, she sensed pretty quickly that Goldsmith had his eye on her for one of the lead roles — Imogene, the oldest of the six Herdmans, who leads her siblings with a trigger temper and an iron fist.

“It was a little bit of a surprise,” Ellie said, “because I didn’t know if I could be that mean.”

Ellie got the part, and rehearsals began Oct. 12, a Sunday evening.

Goldsmith created a firm but flexible schedule for the seven weeks of preparations. When working with minors, as he has for 26 years at CCT, Goldsmith said he accommodates academic obligations and other extracurricular activities but also expects his cast members to function like young professionals. It starts with how they address each other.

“We’re first names only,” Goldsmith said. “I’m ‘Bill’ to them. It empowers a kid to call an adult by their first name.”

First published as a magazine story, then as a book in 1971, American author Barbara Robinson’s tale of the rough-hewn Herdman kids taking over a Sunday school Christmas pageant was adapted for the theater in 1982 and has been performed thousands of times since then. Robinson, who was born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away last year at age 85. According to the Samuel French organization, which licenses productions of the play, 211 troupes in the U.S. and Canada, along with one church group in Hong Kong, will perform The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in 2014.

This year, Columbus Children’s Theatre stages its 10th production of this now-classic tale of redemption. CCT performed its first Pageant in 1995 and repeats it every two to four years.

“It’s perfect theater,” said CCT’s artistic director Bill Goldsmith. “You laugh, you cry, you go out feeling good about life.”

The show opens Nov. 28 for a run of 27 performances through Dec. 21.

“This is a great place,” Shaw said. “I really appreciate the safety of the community, the support and the resources.

That library is amazing. You can go three times a week, and the kids won’t get bored.”

Neither will visitors to this scenic village located about 35 miles east of Columbus in Licking County. Granville, which was laid out by settlers from Massachusetts, has a vibrant downtown full of interesting shops and great restaurants. It’s home to Denison University, the original Whit’s Frozen Custard and

several Christmas tree farms (Homestead Christmas Tree Farm, M&M Tree Farm and Timbuk Farms).

When the weather’s nice, families will enjoy walking to various shops on Broadway, Granville’s main drag. Kussmaul Gallery has a fun mix of jewelry, art and gifts, including unique items for little ones. Green Velvet stocks everything from clothing to housewares.

Petali Teas sells locally made, handblended teas — including some that are caffeine free and full of vitamin C. “They’re great for kids,” said owner Joy Wujek.

Children also will enjoy visiting the town’s two chocolatiers, Goumas Candyland and Goumas Confections.

For more substantial eats, the familyowned Elms Pizza Parlor serves pizza, stromboli and subs. Brews Cafe offers pub-style food and a wide selection of beer on tap or by the bottle. For healthier fare, try Alfie’s Wholesome Food. The cozy eatery’s menu includes vegetarian options, frittatas, salads and

sandwiches.

A few blocks from downtown, visitors can grab a cup of java and a homemade scone at River Road Coffeehouse. The coffee shop is located near the Going Green Store — a business dedicated to helping customers get toxins out of their home and diet.

It sells a wide array of environmentally friendly items including food produced within 50 miles of Licking County, recycled and up-cycled goods and chemical-free cleaning products.

In addition to the eclectic shopping and dining options, the area — which includes the county seat of Newark — also has several venues for family fun. Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark features CoCo Key Water Resort, an indoor water park with slides, interactive children’s area and more. For outdoor fun, Dawes Arboretum has numerous habitats for kids to explore.

The 1,800-acre park includes a pond, Japanese garden, wetlands and woods.

The Works: Ohio Center for History,

Art & Technology is a wonderful hands-on learning center. Families can perform science experiments, check out art and history exhibits or watch artists blow glass during a visit to the one-of-a-kind museum.

Kids who like to make art will want to visit the Granville Studio of Visual Arts. The studio, located on the grounds of historic Bryn Du Mansion, offers classes, workshops and camps for kids. Children are encouraged to follow their imagination while creating projects at the studio, which routinely hosts exhibits of the students’ work, said Lee Anne Faler, executive director of the nonprofit organization.

Another outlet for creative expression in Granville is Ohio’s Youth Entertainers Stage Show, a vaudeville theatrical revue. The stage show, which hosts tryouts in January, showcases child actors, singers, musicians, magicians, comedians and more. The troupe performs at festivals and fairs throughout the summer.

Granville will ring with holiday cheer Saturday, Dec. 6, during the community’s annual Candlelight Walking Tour.

The decades-old event features caroling, carriage rides and other family-oriented activities. Broadway, the village’s main street, will be lined with decorated Christmas trees.

The festivities start at 1 p.m., while Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at dusk in a fire truck. Children can visit with Santa from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Every child receives a free photo.

The holiday festival, which is sponsored by the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce, is designed to bring together families and local business owners, said Steve Matheny, executive director of the chamber.

“The focus is on the traditional aspects of the holiday,” he said.

Children can make crafts, check out an exhibit of gingerbread houses

and watch ice-carving demonstrations, added Lisa Englefield, who chairs the event. The event features indoor and outdoor activities, which parents appreciate if it is a cold day, she said.

“It’s our favorite event. It’s a great day. It’s a Christmas wonderland,” Englefield said. “We try to make it bigger and better every year.”

She suggests checking in at the Village Hall, 141 E. Broadway, for a schedule of events.

Visitors also can download the Granville app that will be launched that day and provide details about the event and the community.

Many of the local stores serve small snacks and have special sales.

“It’s a way for the local business to give back to the community and say thank you,” Englefield said.

The Kid Says ‌ I was excited to try Pie’s Gourmet Pizza Bistro because it meant we got to eat pizza on a school night. Usually, Friday is pizza night at our house.

I like cheese so the fried mozzarella sounded really good to me.

Turns out, I was onto something.

The appetizer came with this tomato sauce that made it taste like cheese on tomatoes. It was scrumptious.

I know most kids would think Brussel sprouts sound bad, but I usually like them. At Pies, I especially like them because they are fried and crunchy — just the way I like them. They were prepared with salt, oil and cheese, which I thought was a great combination.

I was really looking forward to tasting the Il Giardino Pizza because it comes with all the toppings I normally order. (We did have them add pepperoni.)

Even though I have ordered pizza with these toppings on it at other places, this pizza was special.

The crust was thicker than what you get at most Columbus pizza

joints. Also, the toppings seemed fresh like when we put tomatoes from our garden on our homemade pizza.

Normally, I’m not a fan of cheese pizza because I really like the taste of pepperoni and it doesn’t have any on it. However, the Quattro Formaggi Pizza was a different story. It tasted like multiple different cheeses — and I’m big on cheese.

I really liked the flavor of the sauce and cheese on the Meatball Pizza, but I wasn’t crazy about the meatballs. I think they would be good with spaghetti but I didn’t like them on pizza.

I really liked the bread pudding. I had never had that dessert before. I was expecting bread with pudding in it, which I thought sounded good. I was surprised that there was no actual pudding on it. Even though it wasn’t what I thought it would be, it was delicious. The cake-like dessert was served warm and topped with chocolate chips, ice cream and butterscotch sauce. The way the ice cream melted into the bread was so good.

I enjoyed my meal and the setting. There weren’t very many kids at the restaurant but our server was very nice. It was crowded when we visited but not too loud.

We could talk to each other in our normal voices. The bathrooms weren’t anything special. They were clean.

I think Pies is a good option when you want to go out for pizza rather than have it delivered to your house.

The Mom Says ‌ I think our other son Alex summed up our visit to Pie’s Gourmet Pizza Bistro the best. After stuffing himself with appetizers, pizza and dessert, he grabbed his stomach and declared, “I’m full but I want to eat more.â€?

We started with fried mozzarella ($8). The cheese was lightly breaded and served with a tomato sauce so tasty that Nick poured it on his plate and lapped it up with a spoon.

We also shared one of the house specialties — crispy fried Brussel sprouts ($7). We’d been to Pie’s once before and I credit this dish with making Brussel sprouts a staple in our home. The kids love the sprouts because they are not soft and mushy like the frozen ones you buy at the grocery.

Despite all that wonderful food, we were still eagerly awaiting our pizza. We had ordered the Meatball Pizza ($10), the Quattro Formaggi (four cheese) Pizza ($10) and the Il Giardino Pizza ($11 for a mix of mozzarella and provolone cheeses, green and red peppers, red onion, tomato, black olives, fresh basil, a sprinkle of Asiago cheese and we replaced the green peppers with pepperoni). They were all delicious and the toppings were fresh and flavorful.

We all agreed we had just enough room to share one dessert and decided on the Maple Bourbon Bread Pudding ($9) with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream ($1). It was another mouthwatering choice.

There weren’t many kids dining there the day we visited but everyone was friendly and welcoming to the boys. The roomy, one-person bathrooms did not have changing stations or suitable stand-ins.

The restaurant was a great pick for our family of fairly adventurous eaters but I can see even picky eaters enjoying the Quattro Formaggi while mom and dad sample some of the more sophisticated choices and enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine.

It didn’t sound too difficult.

Especially the sleeping part. For four years, my only adult time with Connor and Evan’s parents came in the form of beers and games after the boys were put to bed. “Keep them happy, keep them busy, keep them alive,” was my mantra for their first overnight stay at my house.

First Steps: Supplies Hosting two 4-year-old boys required purchasing some supplies and hiding others. In preparation for my evening with the twins, I stocked up on snacks (red licorice) and entertainment (the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory). And then I hid things. Things that I don’t remember seeing in any of the homes of my friends with children. I hid candles and lighters, glass ornaments and family heirlooms. I stored tiny things, expensive things and sharp things.

And then I got to the kitchen sink.

Right there, three feet from the ground, was a treasure chest of cleaning chemicals. Powders, bleach and even sprays meant distinctly for killing.

How do parents of small children keep their houses clean while keeping their children alive? I decided to trust that Connor and Evan had been trained not to drink wasp spray and kept it all asis, with hope in my heart.

The Movie

“They won’t sit through a full movie,” Sarah warned when I told her about my purchase. I decided to try it anyway. This whimsical film with beautiful scenes of candy was sure to draw their attention.

Their attention and their terror, it turns out. While Evan cozied up to me on the couch, Connor loudly voiced his opinion — especially in the psychedelic tunnel scene — that he did not like this movie.

(Surprising, given his father’s fondness for Phish and the Dead.)

I sent the movie home with the boys, to commemorate their first fulllength feature film. The Veruca Salt song-tantrum remains a favorite scene.

Bedtime, Step One I set up a makeshift bed for them in the finished basement of my split level, just steps from my room and the bathroom. When they’re at home, bedtime is predictable. They talk to one another for a bit, then fall asleep. I expected something similar. My lack of a night light (they use a Lite-Brite at home) proved to be an issue for Connor, who protested less than a minute after I turned off the light.

The Solution The relocation process happened quickly, as I could think of no other option. They slept on the floor at the end of my bed, in the one room I didn’t childproof. Note the “they.” They slept, I did not. Every snort, cough, yawn made me think something bad was happening. And, like a neurotic parent of a newborn, when I couldn’t hear them at all, I was convinced of the worst. The 6:30 a.m. wake-up was a tough one and, hours after they left, Aunt Jill took a rare midday nap.

Lesson Learned Exposing children to Gene Wilder’s disturbing and somewhat psychopathic portrayal of Willy Wonka? This calls for a night light.
