Dear Columbus Parents, Forgive us here at Columbus Parent as we engage in a little selfindulgent celebration. This issue marks the 25th anniversary of the magazine’s publication! That’s quite a milestone in this day and age when magazines come and go with dizzying speed.

Putting together the story about our anniversary actually started last summer when I contacted Linda Deitch, one of my favorite Dispatch librarians (The Dispatch building in downtown Columbus houses a very comprehensive library, and its staff is amazing when it comes to research. It’s also my favorite place to curl up with a stack of magazines when my brain is fried and I need a break from my magazine.).

Piecing together Columbus Parent’s history was a monumental challenge involving records searches both online and in warehouses. For starters, we found out the magazine was not launched in 1988 as we originally thought. It began as a paid-subscription magazine out of Worthington in 1989 and it was called Columbus Kids: It became Columbus Parent in 1990.

(Incidentally, offering the option of paid — and mail-delivered — subscriptions has long been on our wish list: Please let me know if you wish for it, too! Send me an email at jane.hawes@columbusparent.com and let me know what you think would be a reasonable charge for a monthly subscription.).

But then, in the research process, we started having some more fun, investigating how much parenting life has changed in the last 25 years. Now, back in 1989, parenthood was not on my radar.

Not even close! But, not too many years later, there I was with my first bambino. Suddenly words like “Snugli� and “jog stroller� were part

of my vocabulary. But I was also navigating my new life without words like “Starbucks� and “GPS� — words that new parents today probably cannot fathom living without!

So we’ve documented many of these changes, including the prices of staple foods and supplies as well as changes to local family institutions like the Columbus Zoo and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

And in this issue we also take a look at the fun of parenting today, whether it’s defined by the pets that bring love (and sometimes allergies) into our lives, the parties that are such a wonderful part of family life, or the DIY dads who, with hammer and nail, create the most fabulous playhouses and play ships!

So get out there, Columbus parents, and celebrate all that is fun and fabulous about parenting our beautiful children!

Even if the stork is a few months away, a new Columbus-based startup company will give expectant mothers even more little packages to look forward to.

My Summer (Camp) Guide

By Joel Oliphint My wife and I scheduled our kids — Liam, 6, and Maggie, 4 — for a bunch of camps this summer. Some are half days; others are full days.

Some Maggie and Liam can take together; others they’re separated by the two-year age difference.

Registering for all those camps is a hair-pulling process that I leave mostly to my wife, Kate, who emerged from the womb with planner in hand.

Sometimes, though, what make sense on paper becomes absurd in reality. We learned last year that it’s in no one’s best interest to put one kid in nature camp at Highbanks Metro Park up north the same week another kid has a COSI

camp with a similar start time downtown. Never have I cursed U.S. Route 23 as much as I did that week.

We do summer camps because they’re a great way to keep the kids’ brains and limbs active — particularly Liam, whose uncontainable energy becomes more gnat-like the greater the time span between scheduled activities. But like many working parents, the camps are also a practical necessity. While my writer gig is a part-time thing, I rely heavily on the 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. window to get words on the page and interviews on tape.

In the summer, those school days have to be manufactured somehow.

With all those camps and a couple weeks of vacation, just about every day of summer has now been scheduled, which makes it easier to know how many assignments I can take on before the fall. But the copious pre-ordained blocks of time also can strip summer of its ‌ summery-ness. My best memories of summer don’t involve camps. I think of playing baseball with neighbors and making a fort in the woods and running everywhere without ever getting winded.

Our family has a lot of traditions in the winter, particularly around the holidays. We read from an Advent book in December and go to Oakland Nursery as a family to pick

out our tree. (Every year I try to convince Kate that our tree doesn’t need to touch the ceiling.) We light the fireplace almost nightly. Kate makes chai tea. I make an Old-Fashioned.

But we have very few summertime traditions. Other than hosting a big bash to celebrate our family’s summer milestones (three birthdays and an anniversary), regular strolls to Jeni’s for ice cream and the occasional creek walk, the season is a hodgepodge of weeklong educational camps.

I feel a little guilty about this.

Of all seasons, summer is the let’s-figure-it-out-as-we-go time of year. That’s the idealized, Rockwellian version in my head, at least.

Fortunately, the kids won’t be in full-day camps every day.

We’ve got afternoons, evenings, weekends. We’ll make time for running through sprinklers and climbing trees in the backyard. Maybe we’ll join a pool. Whatever the extracurriculars, I’m going to resist the temptation to schedule them on certain days in the family calendar. It’s summer vacation, after all.

Of course we let him bring it home, thinking it would be a short stay. Ian named it “Finn.” The goldfish moved from a small bowl to an aquarium in no time and three years later is still with us and clearly right at home.

We’ve been considering an addition to our family. Let me be more specific: a four-legged addition. There is little debate it will be a dog and not a cat because of my husband’s allergies. My family has had many lengthy discussions about what kind of dog will be the best fit for us, what we will name it and, of course, who will be responsible for it.

The responsibility piece remains my biggest concern. When we initially started talking about getting a dog, Ian was a bit younger. He maintained that he would walk the dog every day, twice a day, but when asked about curbing the dog — cleaning up after it — his enthusiasm came to a screeching halt.

Instead he suggested, “Mom might be better at doing that.”

Getting Your Dander Down Allergies don’t have to rule out pet ownership

W

hen Brandy Roberts’ 6-year-old daughter asked for a pet kitten, the Grove City mother was torn.

Roberts, who developed an allergy to cats as a teen, didn’t want to become miserable in her home but she wanted to make Hayliee happy.

Realizing that some cats cause more severe allergic reactions than others, she set out to find a cat she could live with. She was willing to take the occasional allergy pill, but knew she could not stand the painful eye swelling and irritation she experienced in the presence of some cats.

Her approach is similar to what Dr. David Stukus would recommend.

The assistant professor of pediatrics, who specializes in allergy and immunology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, understands that parents or children with minor allergy symptoms might prefer treatment to giving up a family pet.

Problems would arise for people who were unable to take allergy medi-

cine or who did not experience relief from it, Stukus said. When allergies are untreatable and cause breathing or sleeping issues, he encourages patients to look at other solutions.

“It’s well established that poorly controlled allergy symptoms can impact our abilities at school or work,” he said.

Allergy symptoms can affect people’s sleep, make them more susceptible to other illnesses, decrease their activity levels and negatively impact their quality of life, Stukus said.

However, in many cases, allergy medicine combined with good housekeeping can allow people with allergies to share a home with a pet, Stukus said. Pet allergies are caused by dander — sticky, microscopic materials produced by cats, dogs, rodents, birds and other animals with fur or feathers.

All cats and dogs have dander regardless of their hair length or frequency of shedding, he said.

If symptoms can be relieved by medication, the “vast majority of people” would be fine taking medicine either daily or as needed to treat al-

When Roberts decided to get a kitten, she visited several shelters and interacted with a variety of animals to see which ones caused her the least amount of discomfort.

She shied away from cats that caused her eyes to water and swell.

While no breed is allergy-free, individuals may find they are more impacted by one breed or another, Stukus said.

When Flynn and Anna joined the household in December, Roberts made sure to regularly bathe them with baby wipes and wash her hands after handling the kittens. She has taken over-the-counter allergy medicine a couple of times, but has experienced no major reactions. She attributes it to choosing the right cat and trying to reduce pet dander.

“It’s just what people are willing to do,” she said. “My 6-year-old wanted these cats and I was going to figure something out.”

Making sure a pet is eating right also can impact the amount of dander it produces, added Rachel Finney, executive director of the Capital Area Humane Society near Hilliard. Pets with a poor diet produce more dander, she said.

The nonprofit organization often receives calls from people who discover someone in the family has an allergy to a pet. The society encourages families to contact them as soon as they discover a problem. The organization does have tips and suggestions that can help families manage the situation. If families determine they cannot keep the animal, the society can help them find alternative solutions.

If You Build It… Daring dads and their DIY play structures

hile a field of fescue is nice, backyard play structures can go a long way in staving off kids’ summertime claims of boredom. Instead of settling for a pre-fab swing set or playhouse-in-a-box, these two homeowners went the DIY route with fantastic results.

Clarke Cummings already had some DIY skills, but learning to build an entire house alongside his father-in-law through Habitat for Humanity prepared him for almost any project. Together they rebuilt a deck and even put a roof on Cummings’ first house.

When Cummings and his wife Amy decided it was time to put a play structure in the backyard of their Worthington home last spring, they knew they wanted something that would provide fun for their kids, ages 4 and 7 at the time, for years to come.

“There are a lot of different options out there,” Cummings said. “It can be challenging to figure out what’s going to work.”

Cummings found what he wanted when he came across pirateshipplay houseplans.com, which, for around $150, provided blueprints and a mate-

rials list for an 8--by-18-foot wooden pirate ship. He estimates he spent $1,250 for wood and $150 for screws, nails and other materials.

Cummings customized the plans to his liking, cutting in some angles here and there, not to mention adding a catapult. A few years ago his son, Clarke Xander (aka “CX”), had an Angry Birds-themed birthday party for which Cummings had built a 2-by4-foot wooden catapult for the kids to use. Naturally, he incorporated a spot on the deck for the catapult.

The ship boasts bottom, middle and top decks, complete with a firehouse-style pole to go quickly from one deck to another. Now that his two swashbucklers are getting bigger and older — CX is now 5 and daughter Soleil is 8 — Cummings plans to further customize the ship this year, adding a crow’s nest and some climbing holes.

For any time-consuming home project, Cummings stressed the importance of owning or renting the right tools, especially a framing nailer, for building a play structure of this size.

He also chose the ideal time to tackle the project: the week before he started a new job, which meant he didn’t have to take vacation time or spend every weekend covered in sawdust. He estimated it took about 60 hours to build.

“If I’d tried to do it over weekends, it probably would have taken me three months,” he said.

“Some neighborhood kids play on the pirate ship more than my kids,” Cummings said, laughing.

A Room with a View Rick Snowdon is no carpenter. “‘Handy’ would be the most generous description,” he said.

But Snowdon makes up for any skill deficits with a curious nature and a willingness to march into uncharted territory. “I like to figure out if I can do it,” he said.

Staring at two pine trees in the backyard of his Bexley home, Snowdon wondered if he could build a treehouse for his kids. Imagining the structure as merely an elevated shed, he looked online for some plans on how to frame a shed, then sketched a basic plan for the treehouse on a napkin.

“We’re not the kit type of family,” he said.

Snowdon started the project in fall 2012 and thought it would take him about a month to complete, but, as is the case with many DIY projects, it dragged on. His three kids — Phoebe, 10, Theo, 13, and Hank, 15 — began to doubt him. At one point, Snowdon heard Hank tell Theo, “Dad’s never gonna finish this.”

“That was like a dare to make sure I did,” Snowdon said.

Sure enough, by last summer the project was finished, complete with cedar siding, a Dutch door and corrugated metal roof, all resting 11 feet off the ground on four posts, a pair of which is attached to the two trees.

Snowdon even found a local fabricator to custom-bend a pipe to use as a firefighters’ pole on the side of the house.

It’s a popular attraction with his kids and their friends, but adults like it, too. Snowdon said he recently put a horseshoe pit below the treehouse, which now functions as an observation deck during games.

Snowdon would do a few things differently if he had to do it again.

Most importantly, he would have taken the time to make sure all the support posts were square.

The “measure twice, cut once� adage rang true. But he had no regrets about taking on the project. “I realized my kids are growing up,� Snowdon said. “I wanted to do something fun like this to capture their attention while they’re still children.�

Let neighborliness be your guide when planning. Give neighbors something they can point to and be proud of.

Make structures safe not only for your own children, but for curious kids who live nearby. Respect neighbors’ privacy, and come up with a maintenance plan to prevent the structure from becoming an eyesore if and when the kids outgrow it.

Under Ohio’s residential code, “swings and other playground equipment� are exempt from plan approval and permit requirements. Codes change every year but, for now, there are no statewide regulations on structures that fall under the wide umbrella of “playground equipment.� Columbus and most area suburbs follow the state’s lead and leave play structures to the discretion of homeowners (within reason).

Still, it’s always a good idea to call your local building department before building since guidelines vary from suburb to suburb. Bexley asks that residents adhere to the 3-foot setback requirement from property lines.

Many homeowners’ associations also have either language in their guidelines that directly addresses play structures or an approval process to be followed before construction.

Know, too, that certain structures could become home-insurance headaches.

Tip of the month Potty Training Many children are ready for potty training between 18 and 24 months of age, although it’s normal for your child to start a little earlier or later. If you and your child are ready to start potty training, consider these tips: Make time. Devote time each day to teaching your child how to use the potty chair, then eventually the toilet.

Demonstrate. Show your child how you sit on the toilet and explain what you’re doing.

Use the chair after meals. Have your child sit on the potty chair within 15 to 30 minutes after meals to take advantage of the body’s natural tendency to have a bowel movement after eating.

Praise. Praise all attempts to use the toilet, even if nothing happens. Some parents even offer small rewards when their children successfully use the toilet.

Patience. Remember that accidents will happen. Continue to be supportive and encouraging to your child.

It’s tempting to rush through a divorce to get it over with, but it pays to think through every decision carefully because a divorce decree can have long-term financial impacts: Spousal support can lead to unexpected income-tax bills, and government child-support guidelines haven’t been updated since 2001. “You need to know what (postdivorce) life will look like and if you will be in the red with the settlement,” Moussi said. “It’s easier to do it on paper before agreeing to something, than to live with it after it’s permanent.”

uby and Kent Skipper both recently retired in May 2013. Ruby was a kindergarten and first grade teacher and Kent had been a Red Roof Inn manager. They wondered what they would do next.

ancaster tourism officials want the Fairfield County seat to be known as a place where history and the arts come alive. The city, located just 35 miles southeast of Columbus, offers a mix of historical sites, art-related venues and interesting dining options.

The city’s major art event, the Lancaster Festival, will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. Slated for July 16-26, the festival includes 75 performances, many of which are free.

But all year museum operators, local artists and leaders work hard to make the arts and history accessible to residents, particularly children.

The downtown, with numerous small parks and public art pieces, is

very walkable. The Ohio Department of Transportation currently is completing road and walkway upgrades on Main Street between Memorial Drive and High Street.

Many people don’t realize Lancaster’s role in the nation’s history, said Andrea Brookover, executive director of the Fairfield Heritage Association.

Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster.

Sherman’s battlefield wins were instrumental in the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1864 and the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy. Sherman’s famous “March to the Sea” left a 50-mile-wide wake of destruction through the heartland of Georgia.

His birthplace, now the Sherman House Museum, has been a memorial to the family since 1951. The home, built in 1811, has been restored to look as it did when the Shermans lived there

and is furnished with items from the early- to mid-19th century.

Visitors particularly enjoy seeing the Sherman family cradle that was used for all 11 of the Sherman children, Brookover said.

The children’s bedroom on the second floor tends to be the “funnest room for children,” she added. The room showcases old toys, which sparks a lot of comparisons about children’s pastimes then and now, she said. Kids also are surprised to learn that in Sherman’s time, children would share a bed with two or three siblings, Brookover said.

The house also features a Civil War tent exhibit similar to what Sherman himself would have occupied during wartime.

More history is on display just outside the city limits at Rock Mill, Ohio’s largest and oldest (but no longer working) gristmill.

The heritage association also maintains the Georgian Museum, a stately brick and sandstone home built in 1832. The home features many period antiques, but children tend to most appreciate the museum’s special dollhouse and miniatures collection, which were donated by a local collector, Brookover said. Kids also enjoy the kitchen with its early toasters, apple corers and other gadgets.

The Ohio Glass Museum showcases the community’s history as a glass manufacturing town, said Kate Ervin, executive director of Destination Downtown Lancaster. The museum has rotating glass exhibits and a glassblowing studio where artists demonstrate the centuries-old skill.

Other places to view art are the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, a museum that works to promote appreciation of the decorative arts, and Art & Clay on Main, a paint-your-own pottery

The Lancaster Festival has numerous opportunities for children to see and do arts-related activities, said Lou Ross, executive director of the event. The festival focuses on classical concerts, chamber music and the visual arts, he said. He encouraged would-be visitors to check out the online event schedule, which will include performances of Disney’s Fantasia and the Atlanta Ballet this year.

When kids are ready to play, head to AHA! A Hands-on Adventure, the local children’s museum.

Another interesting spot is the doll shop Pure Imagination. The store carries a large selection of collectible dolls.

For good eats, check out The Well, Central Ohio’s newest play café. For $3, kids can explore the café’s tree house. Meanwhile, moms and dads can enjoy fresh-roasted coffee or lunch fare at the gluten-free, vegan-friendly eatery.

Shaw’s Restaurant & Inn is a local institution, renowned for fine dining, special occasions and cooking classes. An impressively renovated Elk’s Lodge has now become The Lodge in Lancaster restaurant, much loved for its mix of American and Italian cuisine. And an old family favorite, Diamond Jim’s Pizza, has returned to town.

Aaron Leu Aaron and Adam Leu have worked together for years.

The brothers, who at one time owned a painting company together, were looking for a new venture that would allow them to interact with the public.

After visiting play cafés in Columbus, they began to look for an older building to house a business that would be part play café, part restaurant and part community gathering place.

In March, the brothers — with the help of their wives and parents — opened The Well in Lancaster. The family members like working together, Aaron Leu said.

“It’s very good,” he said. “Our family is very close. We’re all committed to this.”

What made you decide to give your business a play café focus?

We had stumbled upon play cafés in Columbus. Both of us have three children. With three children, you can’t go out too much. We like that atmosphere. But ours is a lot different than other places.

How does The Well differ?

We didn’t want to exclude people in the community. We wanted it to be a gathering for everyone — not just someone with children. That’s where the food and the coffee come in. We also sell things made by artisans: handmade soaps, lotions and other goods. We’ve got bulk herbs and bulk grains. It’s a number of concepts. It’s a unique place.

Tell us about your food.

We wanted it to be very healthy.

We’ve got juices and smoothies. We have two or three things that we offer each day. We keep rotating and keep it healthy. We’re a totally gluten-free facility. Our sandwiches are served on gluten-free bread we bake here. It’s all

vegetarian. We’re very vegan-friendly.

Adam also started a coffee-roasting business so we’ve got fresh roasted coffee.

What is the play area like?

It’s simple: a three-story tree house.

There’s different levels children can climb through. It’s got built-in cubbies, a reading nook and storage areas. It costs $3 to play all day. Children under 1 are free.

Did your kids have any impact on the design?

A big part is having children, seeing what develops their creativity. Adam and I built the structure. Our two boys — they’re the oldest — were down here constantly when we were building it.

They were our guinea pigs.

Do you have any special events?

Right now we’re open 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. We might get into doing evening events here. We’re just seeing how it goes. We’re trying to get the day-to-day down.

Memphis

Having visited Memphis before, I knew the Blues City was a place my husband and I would enjoy. I wasn’t sure what our boys, ages 7 and 9, would think.

They love barbecue, knew Elvis had a mansion there and liked the idea of staying in a hotel with live ducks in the lobby, so we were off to a good start.

We opted to drive the 580 miles, splitting the trip over two days on the way down. Flush with electronics and snacks, the boys enjoyed the road trip.

WHAT TO DO Children’s Museum of Memphis 2525 Central Ave., Memphis 38104; 901-458-2678; cmom.com After being cooped up in the van for several hours, we decided our first stop would be the Children’s Museum of Memphis. The kids were immediately attracted to the FedEx Airplane

display, which features a conveyor belt for loading packages onto the plane.

From there, they darted over to the Skyscraper, an awesome wood-and-net climbing structure. They also checked out Great American Airways, an exhibit where kids feed balls and scarves into clear, pneumatic tubes to experiment with airflow. A family favorite was the CMOM-TV station, where the kids stand in front of a green screen and choose a film clip. The boys cracked themselves up reporting on a hurricane.

We spent several hours in the museum, which has exhibits geared for ages 12 and younger. It definitely provided opportunities for the kids to run around, learn a little something and be silly. It was the first of many fun-filled, educational attractions.

We really appreciate the city’s musical contributions and wanted to be sure the boys took in some of that history. During the car ride, we listened to music recorded at Sun Studio and talked about the famous people who performed there.

We decided a visit to the Smithsonian-affiliated Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum might help put things in perspective. The tour starts with a movie that offers a great introduction to the city and its music.

music — everything from songs sung by sharecroppers in the 1930s to the hits recorded at Sun Studio, Stax Records and Hi Records. (Music fans can learn even more about the region’s contributions by visiting Stax Museum of American Soul Music, staxmuseum. com, and Sun Studio, sunstudio.com.)

The Rock ‘n’ Soul museum highlights how black and white musicians came together to create a new style of music. Having just celebrated Black History Month at school, the boys appreciated the stories. It was a positive framework for discussing segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.

After the tour, we headed over to A. Schwab (163 Beale St.) for a snack.

The old-time general store has a soda fountain and a great candy counter.

Cost: $11, adults and $8 for kids ages 5-17 Hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily Beale Street In the 1920s, Beale Street was the place to be. It hummed with nightlife, clubs, theaters, gambling and live

music. It’s still a great place to soak up the flavor and history of Memphis.

There are plenty of places to hear music, shop for souvenirs and mingle with the locals. During our trip, we ran into bluesman Clyde Hopkins standing on the sidewalk star bearing his name, hawking his latest CD and reminiscing about Elvis.

No visit to Memphis would be complete without a visit to the home of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The boys appreciated the grandeur of the house and the novelty of the Jungle Room and some of the other more garish decorations.

They also were impressed with his collection of cars, motorcycles and planes.

They could have skipped a few of the specialty tours focusing on his movies and clothing.

ducks in its fountain — and they weren’t disappointed. They loved the historic hotel’s red-coated doormen and posh lobby, home to the Peabody ducks.

The ducks first arrived in the lobby fountain in the 1930s when the hotel’s general manager and a friend returned from a hunting trip with live ducks they had used as decoys. The men, who had enjoyed a little too much whiskey on the trip, thought it would be funny to put them in the fountain.

When he awoke the next morning, the embarrassed hotel manager tried to remove the ducks but the hotel guests cried foul. They wanted them to stay.

The ducks soon became a fixture.

In 1940, a hotel bellman and former circus worker offered to train the ducks to march to and from the fountain. He became the first Peabody Duckmaster, and the tradition of the Peabody Duck March began.

Every day at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., under the direction of the current duckmaster, the animals march into and out of the fountain. The well-attended event is open to the public.

We weren’t sure what to expect from this strangely named venue but since the local tour book described it as “classic field trip material,” we took a chance and visited. We were immediately intrigued by its vast natural history exhibits, chronicling everything from how animals adapt to their environment to the formation of the oceans. The museum has fabulous collections of fossils, minerals and taxidermy. We also liked the miniature circus display, the Civil War artifacts and the display about growing cotton.

We joined some local students for a show in the planetarium that explained different elements of the night sky. We could have easily spent an entire day exploring the facility, and it will be at the top of our list if we ever return to Memphis. We also had a delicious and affordable lunch of soup and sandwiches in the museum’s Bella Café.

“I have to go to the bathroom.”

It was a park day and, for once, the twins’ parents had allowed me to babysit.

It’s not a trust or comfort issue. I held the boys the day they came home from the hospital, five and a half years ago.

I’ve hosted family-wide slumber parties.

And Sarah and Ryan continually let me write about their boys. That’s trust.

Instead, the reluctance to have me babysit has to do with the fact that they feel guilty asking someone else to take care of the boys. They don’t realize, I suspect, that spending time with their kids brings me joy, no matter how long and loud Connor can scream about snacks, or how many times Evan repeats himself when reporting that his brother didn’t wash his hands for long enough. As parents, they live with a level of stress that normally eludes me, the part-time aunt.

Until, that is, about half an hour into my first solo trip to the park with the boys, when Evan announced he had some business to do. “Do you have to pee or poop?” I asked, for clarification.

“A little bit of both,” he squirmed.

And, of course, there weren’t restrooms around.

Park games aren’t just for kids.

There’s the “Don’t Lose Sight of the Boys” game, which is especially difficult when they’re running in different directions and playing “Hide and Go Seek.” There’s the “Make Sure They Don’t Get Hit in the Head by the Tire Swing” game and its sequel, “When They’re Hit in the Head by the Tire Swing, Distinguish Between ‘Hurt’ and ‘Startled.’” (Note: It’s usually “startled.”)

Life’s 11th Commandment: “When someone says they have to go to the bathroom, even if you have to go, you have to let them go first. Period.”

And then there’s “Take Two Boys from the Park for Evan’s Potty Emergency.”

This game was not to Connor’s liking.

Making Up Life’s Rules Evan spent the walk home announcing his intentions: Go to the bathroom and lock the door. I spent the time hoping I wouldn’t have to clean up “a little bit of both,” while also wondering if the bathroom door actually locked.

(It didn’t.) Connor spent the walk home planning to antagonize his brother, which was apparent as soon as I opened the front door and he raced for the restroom.

Evan’s scream was louder than the one that comes from getting surprised by a tire swing. It was during his breakdown that I was forced to deliver — with authority — life’s 11th Commandment to Connor: “When someone says they have to go to the bathroom, even if you have to go, you have to let them go first. Period.” I didn’t know if that is an official Commandment, but it sounded good. Still does.

What I Learned As much as I adore these boys, being solely responsible for them — and, sometimes, their lifelong moral lessons — isn’t always a day in the park.

2. Fold the paper towel in half. Then repeat this three more times.

3. Carefully dip each corner of the folded paper towel in the bowls of colored water. Let the excess water drip back into the bowl. Try to leave at least part of the paper towel white. Experiment with how long and how deep to dip into the dye.

4. Unfold the paper towel and set out to dry. Setting them outside on a sunny afternoon will dry them the fastest!

5. When dry, gather the paper towel in the middle and wrap a pipe cleaner around it. Twist off the pipe cleaner leaving about an inch loose on each end. Bend the ends to form antennae.

We loaded up the three kids to check out The Kitchen’s Taco Tuesday, which runs from 5-9 p.m. Although this restaurant is mainly geared to large adult dinner parties, Taco Tuesday is open to the public. The menu changes each week based on a different theme and tonight’s was Mexican-inspired. The Kitchen does not have a parking lot or valet so you need to park on the street.

The space is open and inviting and looked sturdy with its strong wood communal tables, a must with our active 4-yearold. The clientele was as communal as the space, as we held conversations with three different sets of people over the course

of our dinner. The line to order moved slowly but, once we ordered, our food came very quickly.

I love menus like the one presented at The Kitchen. With only seven main items to choose from, most at $3 a taco, the family was able to order some of each and share family-style.

The kids gravitated to what looked familiar but did try the others, such as the Mole Chicken, the Shrimp Taco, and the Chorizo and Charred Pineapple Salsa Taco. Each taco was well thought out and had something special, such as the Vegan Taco’s lime green beans for brightness or the Chili Relleno Taco’s crushed pork rinds for texture.

good but that just gets one “really.” The Phinn was a regular taco with beef and cheese. I also tried the chorizo and pineapple taco. It was sweet and spicy. I looked at the others but didn’t feel like trying them. I was too full. This restaurant looked different than other restaurants so I wasn’t sure if I got free refills. I went up and asked and the nice bartender gave me one.

The restrooms looked really cool; the sink was like a miniature waterfall. The walls and ceiling were dark blue and the floor was white tile.

They were really clean.

The kitchen had a lot of cool décor like a tiled coffee table and some flowers. I would like to go to The Kitchen again.

It was really fun and next time I go, I’ll go on a Tuesday!

When my mom told me we were going out to dinner, I was excited because I like tacos. I liked the space immediately but wished it had more color. Then I realized black goes good with black. The menu was short, so we ordered some of everything and a Shirley Temple.

I liked the part where I got to take our order from the ordering line over to the cooks in the kitchen. One thing I really liked was that the kitchen where they made the food was right out in the open.

When they delivered all our tacos, some of them looked crazy and some of them looked normal. The Phinn looked normal and so did the Quesadilla. The Quesadilla tasted really good, plus five more reallys. The apple salsa they served with it was
