A Coastal Journey Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline offers abundant natural wonders.

STOP 1: TOLEDO Set out from Columbus on a two-hour drive to Toledo to spend the day at the Oak Openings Preserve, the largest Toledo Metropark, with more than 5,000 acres of wetlands and prairies. The Metropark is home to more than 100 species of rare plants and insects like the endangered Karner Blue butterfly. Add to the natural immersion by staying overnight at the Cannaley Treehouse Village, the only public treehouse village in the U.S. 48

STOP 2: MAUMEE BAY Before heading 10 miles northeast to Maumee Bay, start your morning at Schmucker’s Restaurant in Toledo, enjoying a hearty breakfast while sitting on one of the 13 chrome counter stools that date to the family-owned restaurant’s 1948 opening. After your meal, head to Maumee Bay State Park, part of the Lake Erie Birding Trail, one of the country’s best birdwatching regions. The 1,336-acre park includes observation lookouts for viewing some of the 300 species of birds that live or migrate through the area, renowned for its spring warblers.

Nearby, you can make stops at the Mallard Club Wildlife Area, Howard Marsh Metropark, Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Black Swamp Bird Observatory and the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. These Lake Erie green spaces make up more than 12,000 acres of wildlife habitat and draw nature lovers to the area each spring for the Biggest Week in American Birding, a 10-day birding festival.

Ohio’s greatest natural resource sits at its northern border—the nearly 200-mile shoreline along the southern edge of Lake Erie. This stretch, of course, includes two of the Buckeye State’s largest cities, Toledo and Cleveland, and iconic tourist attractions, such as Cedar Point and the Put-in-Bay bar scene. But nature lovers also have much to explore, including caves, rare wildflowers, glacial grooves and migratory birds. A meandering road trip is a perfect way to see this often underappreciated natural wonderland.

South Bass Island

STOP 4: MARBLEHEAD Just 20 minutes from Port Clinton is the small town of Marblehead and its magnificent Marblehead Lighthouse. Make your way to the Lakeside Daisy Nature Preserve to see one of the only places where the rare and endangered lakeside daisy grows. If you visit from April to mid-May, you can see the tiny yellow flower in bloom in the quarry limestone.

STOP 5: CLEVELAND/INDEPENDENCE Your next stop is the Cleveland region of the Lake Erie Birding Trail. (Before your visit, order a birding trail guidebook from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website to help you 50

identify specific species.) The trail includes 84 birding spots in the area, but one of the best is the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve, with its Perimeter Loop Trail that takes you past a lake overlook and many wildlife habitats.

Before heading back to Columbus, take a quick side trip from the coast and visit the Cleveland suburb of Independence. There, you can catch the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad for a lovely ride through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The 3.5-hour round trip is a relaxing way to experience Ohio’s only national park.

STOP 3: LAKE ERIE ISLANDS Less than an hour’s drive from Toledo is Port Clinton, where you can catch the Jet Express ferry to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, exploring its parks, caves, trails and nature preserves. Go below ground into Perry’s Cave and Crystal Cave, then above ground to the top of Perry’s Monument for the best bird’s-eye view of Lake Erie.

If you visit in the spring or summer, set aside some time to tour Stone Laboratory, Ohio State University’s freshwater research center on Gibraltar Island just north of Putin-Bay, or the lab’s Aquatic Visitors Center on South Bass Island. Hike at Coopers Woods Preserve, which has 18 acres of trails, and be sure to visit the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center for a look through the wildlife viewing window and to admire the center’s geology and birding collections.

Neighboring Kelleys Island is the home of the glacial grooves, a geological landmark created by the slow-moving glaciers that also birthed the Great Lakes. You can enjoy the island’s hiking trails at North Shore Alvar, North Pond Preserve, Kelleys Island State Park and East Quarry or take a guided bicycle, golf cart or kayak tour with AdvenTours. After taking the ferry back to Port Clinton, plan a lunch stop at Jolly Roger Seafood House for a memorable Lake Erie perch sandwich or a walleye and chips basket.

Out of the Past Discover architectural gems, a moving 9/11 memorial and George Washington’s pistols in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands.

Before the Revolutionary War, George Washington led a regiment of troops through Pennsylvania in 1754. The future president sought to control the Forks of the Ohio, where the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers join to form the Ohio River, and ward off French adversaries in what is now the city of Pittsburgh. Today, you can retrace Washington’s journey through the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania and the great Youghiogheny River, which enabled passage through Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains.

And that’s just one element in a history-themed voyage through western Pennsylvania, which can encompass everything from a powerful 9/11 memorial to some of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural landmarks.

STOP 1: LAUREL HIGHLANDS Your trip begins with a four-hour drive to Stoystown in rural Pennsylvania, where picturesque rolling farmland and charming small towns define the Laurel Highlands region. The first stop is the Flight 93 National Memorial, where you can spend an afternoon exploring the hallowed grounds where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Walk the trails around the park or just sit quietly and listen to the Tower of Voices ring out in remembrance of the 40 passengers and crew members who died that terrible day.

A 25-minute drive from Stoystown takes you to Fort Ligonier, which played an important part in American history during the French and Indian War. Walk the fort grounds and see rare artifacts, including George Washington’s memoirs and his Washington-Lafayette pistols.

After a night’s rest in quiet southwestern Pennsylvania, head out for a day of architectural history focused on two Frank Lloyd Wright homes.

Fallingwater in Farmington is one of Wright’s most intriguing designs. Book tour tickets in advance, especially during the peak months of July, August and October. You can grab lunch at the Fallingwater Café, either reserving an outdoor table on the property or grabbing a to-go lunch as you 52

While most of your Nashville experiences can be spontaneous, you should plan a tour at the historic RCA Studio B or Hatch Show Print, where you can see decades’ worth of woodblock print posters for bands and performers. You will want to get a taste of the sights and sounds of Nashville’s famed entertainment districts, where neon lights and music spill into the streets. Lower Broadway, SoBro and Printer’s Alley are brimming with restaurants and bars like the Listening Room Café, where you can enjoy free live music and grab a bite to eat. In an increasingly polarized time, the country can still agree on at least one thing: Dolly Parton is a treasure. The queen of country music earned widespread acclaim in 2021 for two new albums, a book, her first perfume and—oh yeah—the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which she helped fund.

While it will be tough to top those accomplishments this year, it’s still a wonderful time to spend a few days learning more about Parton and the musical heritage of her neck of the woods, both in her home state of Tennessee and in neighboring Alabama.

Start your visit at the recording studios that were the heart of the Muscle Shoals scene. Tours through Hall’s Fame Recording Studio, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio (founded

by The Swampers, the famed Muscle Shoals rhythm section) and the Cypress Moon Studio (the second location of Muscle Shoals Sound, in neighboring Sheffield) can fill a day.

Also be sure to schedule a few hours to tour the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, with exhibits that showcase the accomplishments of native Alabamians W.C. Handy, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette and more.

Another option is to take the Roots of American Music Trail cellphone tour. It includes directions to the top venues and side stops, along with information about the melodic influence of the Tennessee River on American music.

You can work in food stops to Champy’s World Famous Fried Chicken, Swampers Bar & Grille and Rattlesnake Saloon or just follow your sense of smell to a random roadside barbecue restaurant that has likely been in business for decades.

woods surrounded by the serenity of the Smoky Mountains. Your Pigeon Forge visit will focus on the influence of Dolly Parton, one of country music’s most profound and influential entertainers, who was born in this area in 1946.

During your stay, sample some of Parton’s themed entertainment, including the Dollywood theme park, where you can see some of the behind-the-scenes memorabilia of Parton’s life and music career in the Chasing Rainbows Museum and step inside a replica of her two-room childhood home, which had no running water or electricity. Many local attractions center around Parton, like Dolly Parton’s Stampede, with equestrian performances and a four-course meal.

Plan some browsing at the historic Old Mill Square that has shops with local artisans and

the boutique Old Forge Distillery, where you can pick up a jar of chocolate moonshine. The Old Mill restaurant is a must-visit for breakfast, a chicken dinner or an afternoon slice of homemade pecan pie. In operation since the 1830s, the mill is where Parton’s father used to get corn for the family.

Spend one day at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in nearby Gatlinburg. As the most visited national park in the country, there is a lot to do, from hiking the trails, soaking in the views from scenic overlooks or driving through Cade’s Cove, where you can see native wildlife.

Spend your last night enjoying the regional sounds of bluegrass music under the dark Tennessee skies as you pull up a chair on the plaza at The Island in Pigeon Forge before heading back to Columbus.

The Call of the Gorge Explore rugged West Virginia—and the country’s newest national park— by raft, bike, zip line and more.

The country’s newest national park is an ideal and accessible getaway for Columbus outdoor adventurers. Encompassing more than 70,000 acres in southern West Virginia, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, elevated to national park status in December 2020, features rolling mountains, steep valleys and abundant natural scenery. The rugged landscape found here and in the surrounding area lends itself to hiking, zip lining, caving, falconry, rock climbing, worldclass white-water rafting and more. A road trip through this area is sure to result in unforgettable adventures to feed your inner daredevil.

STOP 1: LANSING Start with a drive to Lansing, just under four hours from Columbus. Be sure to take in the scenery along the way and absorb the dramatic views from lookouts like Long Point and Diamond Point.

Plan to spend one to three days in Lansing at Adventures on the Gorge, an outfitter and adventure resort along the northern tip of the park. Here, you can package a variety of lodging options with a white-water rafting trip on the New River, as well as other experiences. Choose from a gentle, family-friendly float on the Upper New River to a challenging excursion on the Gauley River, which boasts more than 100 rapids on a 26-mile stretch, including nine Class V rapids.

After a good night’s sleep in the woods, spend a half day getting a bird’s-eye view of the Appalachian forest via the TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour. This attraction features 10 zip lines, sky bridges, rappelling and the Gravity Ziplines, which span 1.5 miles, 200 feet above ground, with a view of three counties on a clear day.

Also not for the faint of heart is the bridge walk on the New River Gorge Bridge. The harnessed, guided tour on a 24-inch-wide catwalk provides an up-close glimpse of the iconic man-made structure, the longest steel arch bridge in North America, as well as an unparalleled view of the river valley 850 feet below. Rafting on the Lower New River

goes past overlooks, cliffs and lush forestland. Also not to be missed is the boardwalk to Sandstone Falls, the largest waterfall in the New River at 1,500 feet wide. If you like quirky finds, be sure to locate the abandoned remnants of Nuttallburg, one of dozens of coal mining towns that cropped up along the New River in the 1800s.

STOP 3: WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS Continue your adventure at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, about 60 miles east of the New River Gorge.
