Dear Columbus Parents, The August Back-to-School issue is always a monumental undertaking and every year it feels as if we have more story ideas than we have room to publish them. This year was no different, but I also think we struck a really nice balance of interests and information.

My two favorite stories to work on were the ones about school lunches and high-risk teen behavior. The former involved working with folks from the Ohio Department of Education. The menuplanning standards that schools are now trying to hold themselves to are quite daunting. If you’ve ever tried to analyze what you feed your family and really get into the mathematical minutiae of it, it’s a very hard task. I think most of us go by intuition, seeking a balance of calories, carbs, proteins, fats and whatever else is on those nutritional guidelines, and, oh yes, fits our budgets.

Well, multiply that by thousands of school kids and you get some sense of how difficult it is to plan school menus in a school or district. Oh, and one more thing, try to make sure it tastes good enough to please those finicky palates.

I was impressed with what local schools are doing and I also encourage everyone to download the free cookbook from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that we talk about in the story (available at www.fns.usda.gov/tn/recipes-healthykids-cookbook-homes). Very tasty (and healthy) stuff in there.

The high-risk teen behavior story happened because of a dad who works for my company and has bravely used his family’s personal tragedy as a catalyst for change. Dom Tiberi, the well-known and popular sports anchor at WBNS-10TV (also part of the Dispatch media group), lost his daughter Maria last fall to a distracted-driving crash.

By spring, he was visiting local high schools, hoping to warn teens about this growing problem, and I got to watch one of those presentations.

It was powerful but, being a mother with two kids in the age group he’s try-

ing to reach, I found myself watching the students in the audience just as much as I did Dom. I wanted to see if anything he was saying was sinking in.

It sure looked as if it was. But because of that concern I felt, I decided to focus the article on not just educating people about the risks that teens face every day, but also on the psychology and neurobiology of teens. What makes them do stupid stuff in the first place and, most importantly, is there anything that we as parents can truly do about it?

The insights I gleaned from Dom and Wayne Campbell, another local dad who has turned his family’s experience with drug addiction into an agent for change, and from Dr. Fareeda Haamid, an adolescent-medicine physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, were not just fascinating but also encouraging. As Dr. Haamid said, “Adolescence is not a disease.”

So, once again, we bring you a packed August issue. Hopefully you’ll find lots of relevant, useful and hopeful information in it!

Columbus Children’s Theatre’s Summer Youth Performance Conservatory (ages 10-15) presents Into the Woods Jr., an adaptation of James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s popular Broadway musical, July 30 through Aug. 10. A baker and his wife who, upon learning they cannot have children because of a witch’s curse, set off on a journey to break the curse. Along the way, the tale intersects with the stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of ‘and the Beanstalk’ fame) and more of your favorite classic characters. Recommended for audiences age 3 and older. (And also a possible primer for the much-anticipated and discussed Disney live-action adaptation coming this winter.)

Gill, perhaps uniquely among children’s artists, is a child-development specialist, doing graduate studies with a special emphasis on the study of play. His music embodies playfulness, and his songs — he now has six CDs, the most recent being 2012’s Music Play for Folks of All Stripes — encourage audiences not just to listen but to participate in his concerts. By Joel Oliphint This school year is unexplored territory for my family.

For the first time, both kids — Liam, 7, and Maggie, 5 — will be in school full time. Maggie went to preschool three days a week last year, which still gave us lots of time together. Some weeks I was too swamped to take full advantage of that time, but usually I embraced it.

At least once a week, Maggie and I dropped Liam off at school and went straight to Northstar Café, where I handed over $6.99 for a ham-and-cheese scone and coffee. I held Maggie up so she could push the buttons to fill two glasses with ice and

water. As I filled my pre-warmed mug with coffee, Maggie waited patiently with a wooden stir stick to incorporate the cream into the java. We sat in the same booth every time and, after dividing the scone down the middle, Maggie would hollow out each half with her fingers and hand me the dissected, unwanted pieces of crust and, if I was lucky, a piece or two of ham.

We’d chat, laugh. Eventually I’d hand over my iPhone and we’d play games together; sometimes she’d play solo and I’d settle into an issue of The New Yorker.

This was our routine. It sounds mundane, but it was usually the best part of my

week. Even if she stared at my phone and I at my magazine for half the time, we were enjoying some downtime together. For that 30 or 45 minutes there were no errands, no housework, no writing, no emails (usually). No obligations.

The Oliphints love doing things as a family, but we value the divide-and-conquer strategy, too. Solo parenting can be a liberating experience; Kroger trips are easier with one kid than two. Plus, you can focus your attention on just one child, which allows you to see another side of that child.

Liam and Maggie act differently when they’re apart. Their frequent co-play brings me joy, but it also requires some refereeing. When separated, aspects of their personalities that are often smothered by a sibling begin bubbling to the surface.

In terms of socialization and academic challenges, I don’t have much anxiety about Maggie starting school. She’ll have the same kindergarten teacher Liam had, who also happens to be one of the only non-relatives Maggie has permitted to pick her up. (Unlike her brother, Maggie does not dole out physical affection willy-nilly.) She’s already friends with several of Liam’s kindergarten buddies, who often request that Maggie accompany him on playdates.

All that, along with three years of preschool experience, makes me think her transition to school days will be relatively smooth.

I’m excited for Maggie. And for me. In theory, having 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to myself every weekday means I can take on more assignments and spend fewer evenings squeezing in unfinished work.

But I have a feeling the transition will be tough, too.

It’s going to be harder to find time for solo parenting, much less weekly Daddy-Maggie dates. Unfortunately for our bank account, I’ll likely still find my way to Northstar often. But I don’t think the coffee will taste quite as good when I have to stir it myself.

larly a working mom. When it comes to the resurgence of illnesses such as mumps and measles, there is little to laugh about when you consider the danger to our children. Whether you decide to vaccinate your child is not just your business — especially if your child attends school (or child care) with other children. Surely we can learn from this outbreak and agree that information is a great equalizer and safeguard to the health and safety of children.

We do know most children infected with mumps recover fully, but the disease can occasionally cause serious, lasting problems. These include meningitis (infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord) and deafness.

It’s also important to know mumps can spread before swollen glands appear and for five days after.

In our coverage of the outbreak, we ran across school districts where leaders were hesitant to release information about the number of students who’d come down with the disease, what school they attended or where they lived. Their reticence made it difficult to keep viewers informed but, more importantly, left many parents wondering whether their children were at risk.

and Prevention reports “the MMR vaccine is a shot that combines vaccines for three diseases — measles, mumps, and rubella. The mumps vaccine protects children by preparing their bodies to fight the mumps virus. Almost all children (9 children out of 10) who get two doses of the MMR vaccine will be protected from mumps.”

Studies have shown the MMR vaccine virtually eradicated measles in our country. Yet you’ve certainly heard of people or even have friends who resist vaccinating their children, having read of the alleged link to autism. I would certainly never dare to tell anyone how to raise their children because I’m not looking for outside advice either, but I believe this recent mumps and subsequent measles outbreak speaks to how vital it is for parents and guardians to make informed and educated choices for their children.

When we reported the first cases of mumps linked to Ohio State University back in January, we thought they would be limited to the confines of the Columbus campus. After all, it was mumps — a contagious disease most people thought had gone the way of polio thanks to improved health care and vaccinations.

Before long, it was clear the contagious viral illness was making a comeback. In a matter of days, the mumps outbreak was a major news story.

Producers clamored to keep viewers posted with daily updates of the latest number of cases, which they cheekily dubbed the “mumpdate.”

By late June, Columbus Public Health reported there were more confirmed cases of mumps in Central Ohio (439) in 2014 than in the entire country in 2013 (438).

Measles and mumps outbreaks worry health officials and revive the vaccination debate Quick — can you describe what a measles rash looks like? Do you know the difference between throats swollen from mumps or tonsillitis?

If you don’t, you’re not alone.

“We haven’t seen these diseases in a long time,” said Heidi Steiner, executive director of the Ohio Association of School Nurses. “People don’t know what they look like. They don’t fear them. We need to provide a picture of what these diseases look like.”

Confronted by recent mumps and measles outbreaks, school nurses are joining other health officials in warning parents about the risks of opting out of required vaccinations for their children.

But data show more Ohio parents choosing not to vaccinate their children, often citing religious or philosophical objections.

The Current Outbreak

Nationally, measles cases are at a 20-year high, according to federal health officials.

The recent outbreaks of measles and mumps in Ohio are prompting local health departments to share details about the diseases and raise awareness about vaccinations. A case of the measles can lead to “pretty serious complications,” said Dr. Mary DiOrio, state epidemiologist with the Ohio Department of Health.

Seven people have been hospitalized due to the current measles outbreak, which had infected 374 people as of July 22 and spread to 10 counties. Watery eyes, fever and rash are the typical symptoms of measles, but about 30 percent of patients experience complications that can include pneumonia, ear infections and diarrhea. The outbreak in Ohio started among a group of unvaccinated people who traveled to the Philippines.

in January and had spread to 460 people living in 17 counties, also as of July 22.

The outbreaks illustrate the need for vaccines, DiOrio said.

Nurses also need to make parents aware that in the event of an outbreak, unvaccinated children will not be allowed to attend school until the incubation period is over, Steiner added. When health officials connected the measles outbreak to the Olentangy Local School District this spring, five unvaccinated students were banned from classes for 25 days, the incubation period of the disease. The district worked with the families so that the children didn’t fall behind academically during that time.

Children who receive the recommended two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine are “99 percent-plus protected” against measles, said Dr. Dennis Cunningham, medical director for epidemiology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“We should not have any measles,” he said.

Protection against mumps is not quite as robust, Cunningham said. The recommended two doses of vaccine protect about 85 percent of the people who receive it, he said. Preventing children from getting the mumps is important because the disease can cause hearing loss and swelling of the brain, he added.

In the 2012-13 school year, 2,241 of the state’s 142,170 incoming kindergarteners — about 1.5 percent — were not vaccinated due to their parents’ beliefs, according to data collected by the Ohio Department of Health. Ten years earlier, 710 of Ohio’s incoming 144,484 kindergarteners — or about 0.5 percent — went unvaccinated.

Some parents oppose vaccines because they fear the inoculations can cause autism (a 1998 British study that made the link has been repeatedly discredited) or overload children with too much disease too soon.

For years, Lucy Anguilano never questioned the value of immunizations. The mother of five believed they were a risk-free necessity for children.

But when her youngest daughter, Allie, developed a persistent rash last fall that ultimately covered her body in lesions, Anguilano began to wonder about vaccines. She discovered that she

disagrees with many medical practitioners about what is “safe” for children.

“To a parent, ‘safe’ is harmless,” said Anguilano of Strongsville. “To the medical industry, ‘safe’ means the benefits outweigh the risk.”

Anguilano has decided the risk is too great for her family. She and her husband, Jeff, plan to refuse all further vaccines for their children. In addition to 1-year-old Allie, they have a 5-yearold and 3-year-old triplets.

Allie developed a rash, then lesions and swelling in her hands, face and lymph nodes last November after receiving immunizations at her 6-monthold checkup. The family saw allergists, dermatologists and other doctors to determine what was causing the symptoms. Allie was prescribed antibiotics, steroids and antiviral medication but nothing cleared up the condition, Anguilano said.

Cunningham encouraged parents with questions to consult their doctor.

“Come out and say it: ‘I want to ask you about this,’” he said.

“You do need to have an open communication with your health-care provider.”

“They all rejected the idea of a vaccine reaction,” she said.

In April, Anguilano started taking her daughter to a natural healer who is treating her with herbs and changes in diet. Although Allie appears to be on the mend now, Anguilano still wants to know what caused her daughter months of pain and discomfort.

hey were exactly the kids Dom Tiberi wants to reach — the ones whose heads he wants to climb inside and be the voice they hear every time they put the key in the ignition.

“I want them to think,” Tiberi said later, “is it really that important to brush your hair, apply your blush?

Do you really need to play that latest song or send that text?”

They were juniors and seniors at Dublin Jerome High School. On an April afternoon, they sat in the school’s auditorium — a small sea of colorful T-shirts and polo shirts emblazoned with college logos and the names of their sports teams. Some nabbed a few swipes of their phone screens before Tiberi took the stage.

Most of them knew him as WBNS10TV’s sports anchor.

But many also knew Tiberi as a Dublin dad who, seven months earlier, had lost his 21-year-old daughter, Maria, to a car crash. Hilliard police, in their report, said the probable cause

was a “momentary lapse of attention or an unknown distraction.” How else to explain how a healthy, happy young woman — who wasn’t using a phone, drugs or alcohol — drove into the back of a stopped semi-trailer on an Interstate 270 exit ramp?

“If you really love your parents,” Tiberi pleaded with the young audience before him, “don’t put them through the hell we’re going through.”

Girls in the audience began wiping their eyes and pressing their hands to their faces. Boys bit their nails and swallowed hard. None of them took their eyes off the grieving father in front of them.

Tiberi had their attention that April day. But would he succeed in keeping it after they had signed cards pledging to not drive distracted?

Would he succeed in reducing the risks that teenagers court every day?

The Adolescent Brain “Risk taking is actually norma-

tive at this age,” said Dr. Fareeda Haamid, an adolescent-medicine physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “It’s not because they’re saying, ‘I’m trying to make everyone annoyed at me.’ It’s because this is the way the brain is wired.

“Adolescence,” Haamid added, “is not a disease. It’s a phase of life.”

It’s a phase divided into three stages. The early phase, Haamid said, generally occurs between ages 10 and 13 as the body begins sexual maturation. The middle phase, ages 14 to 16, is what Haamid called “the group that’s responsible for the reputation of adolescent behavior.

This is the height of it.” The late phase starts around age 17 but extends well into the 20s as brain development continues.

“This idea that we expect mature decisions out of a 14-year-old?”

Haamid said. “I tell parents it’s like asking an infant to tie their shoe.”

Wayne Campbell knows about drastic consequences. His son Tyler was a high-school football star from Pickerington, a walk-on at the University of Akron who earned a football scholarship his sophomore year. Tyler was prescribed painkilling drugs by the team’s medical staff. Less than three years later, in July 2011, he died from a heroin overdose, suffered hours after his third release from rehab. The prescription painkillers had led to a heroin addiction, making Tyler one of 1,766 Ohioans to die from an accidental drug overdose that year.

Most of those victims were young, like Tyler, and had gotten hooked on opiates.

In the aftermath of his son’s death, Campbell, like Tiberi, has taken to high-school auditorium stages, to town halls and anyplace in between that will let him talk. Along the way, he said he’s learned a lot about what it takes to get through to adolescents.

“We got a group of kids together,” he said, “and asked them, ‘What would you listen to?’ The overwhelming message was, ‘Do not tell us what to do.’”

Getting Their Attention

Campbell also asked teachers about drug-prevention programs already in existence. “‘Just Say No’ — that was 30 years ago,” Campbell said of the anti-drug program started by former First Lady Nancy Reagan in response to the growing use of marijuana. “I asked the teachers, ‘Does it work?’ and they all said, ‘No.’” So Campbell doesn’t just say no.

Instead, he and his fellow volunteer parents come at the kids from another angle: “We do something different. We’re asking them to speak up for a friend. We’re asking them to help another person.”

The nonprofit foundation Campbell formed — Tyler’s Light — provides kids and their parents with instructions to get help for someone else. If that “someone else” just happens to be themselves, all the better.

That’s why, as a part of his presentations, Tiberi asks the students — all 8,000 of them in the 16 schools he has already visited — to look at their best friends, their boyfriends and girlfriends — and then imagine the person they’re looking at is dead.

It’s the most personal connection he can think to make for them.

“It’s desperation on my part,” Tiberi admitted later, “because I want to save every kid I can.

“I keep waiting for Maria to come home. It took me six months to turn her phone off and we would still send her texts. We bring these children into this world and there is no parent I know who wouldn’t lay down their life for their kids.”

“M

ystery meat” in the school cafeteria is sooooo last millennium. Nowadays, kids are more apt to find meals made with recipes designed and vetted by trained chefs, with ingredients that represent the best of the season and with “taste profiles” — as they say on Food Network — that leave kids asking for more.

Chef Shannon Gerasimchik visited Evening Street Elementary School in Worthington earlier this spring, testing out recipes on a sampling of hungry thirdgraders. Gerasimchik, the executive chef at The Golf Club of Dublin, is not only the chair of the “Chef in the Child” program for the American Culinary Federation, but also the father of three young boys. And while Gerasimchik, who is also opening Chik’s Bare Grill soon at the Little Bear Golf Club in Lewis Center, knows the value of tabulating the net calories and the grams of fat, fiber and protein in a dish, he also knows that, with kids, you can’t fake taste.

“I’ve especially been working with schools to help them learn how to handle the whole grains,” Gerasimchik explained as he prepped his workspace in the Evening Street kitchen. “If you cook it too long, it doesn’t hold up as well. It gets gray and mushy.”

The whole grains that Gerasimchik refers to are part of the changing scene in school kitchens. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is rolling out new requirements for healthier lunches: In the future, all menu items that use grain products — staples

such as pastas, tortillas and pizza crusts — will have to be made with whole grains. The exact timetable is still up for debate at the federal level, but school districts throughout the country are beginning the transition.

Critics charge that these new nutrition standards, which also include stricter limits on the amount of calories, sugar and sodium in school food, not only will drive up costs, but also drive down school-lunch participation rates because kids simply don’t like the taste of these healthier foods.

But that’s where Gerasimchik and his student testers come in. For his visit this day, he had premade servings of three dishes that are featured in a new cookbook, Recipes for Healthy Kids. The USDA-published book features recipes that were submitted to a competition by schools around the country. And he prepared a fourth dish with the students’ assistance.

The three premade dishes included chicken Alfredo from Van Buren Middle School in Kettering, a vegetable lasagna from Liberty Elementary School in Powell and the contest’s grand-prize-winning “Porcupine Sliders” from a Minnesota school.

The sliders are prepared with ground turkey, brown rice, chopped dried cranberries and small doses of onion, garlic, celery and even spinach. Dakotta Baillaregnon, Angelo Peters and Jack Matthews eyed them carefully, then started in.

“That’s so good,” Angelo said.

“I ate mine in one bite,” said Dakotta.

When informed what the ingredients were, the boys were incredulous.

“It’s interesting ingredients,” said Dakotta, “but it’s still good.”

The lasagna was less of a hit, not so much because of the taste — thin slices of butternut squash and mozzarella cheese baked between layers of pasta — but because it didn’t “feel” like the lasagna they were used to, the children said.

“It’s the vegetables,” nodded Shelley Warner, Evening Street’s cook/manager.

“A different texture,” Gerasimchik agreed. “It’s the texture that’s throwing them off.”

Another group of children — Penelope Chalfant, Lino Paletti and Daria Bardus — then helped Gerasimchik create “Eagle Pizzas,” an Oklahoma school’s recipe for what is basically an open-face tostada.

They had fun creating the layered, colorful dish, and the end product, once baked and devoured, got 12 thumbs-ups from the six kids.

Warner observed, “Kids eat with their eyes. You don’t do something like get the pizza too dark.”

Setting Up a Back-toSchool Routine Most kids find routines comforting and even empowering. When you know what to expect, there’s less uncertainty about what to do. Here are some tips to help you and your kids create your own routines and start the new school year off on the right foot!

Bulletin boards, posted calendars and visible charts are great tools for making sure the whole family is “onboard” with routines. If kids aren’t yet readers, draw pictures instead.

Some daily activities that lend themselves to predictability are: Waking Up. Set the alarm for the same time on school days.

Washing Up and Dressing. Keep to a daily ritual of washing up, brushing teeth and getting dressed.

Eating Breakfast. Set a pattern eating breakfast (before or after getting dressed) and how or if the kids help clean up.

Making and Taking Lunch. Designate a place for ingredients and make lunchbox packing and emptying into a regular task. You could have the kids help pack their lunches the night before.

Setting Out for the Day. Make sure your kids know when it’s time to leave for school or daycare. For children who can’t yet tell time, it’s especially important to give a “five-minute signal” so they can wind down what they are doing.

Placing Items in Findable Places.

Designate a place for items (backpack, sports gear, lunchbox, notes) to be

taken to school.

Eating Dinner.

While eating together may not always be possible, try to create a predictable hour for dinner and make it a time to connect as a family.

Getting Ready for Bed. Bedtime routines are known to help kids get a good night’s sleep. Develop a ritual (for instance, bath, then a story) that leads up to an established bedtime.

Some of us have an easier time with routines than others.

Children who are disorganized benefit enormously from structure. And kids who thrive on order find routines comforting. Yet routines needn’t be rigid. Having clear benchmarks can actually allow for greater flexibility and spontaneity.

Back-to-school marks new beginnings and a fresh start for all of us.

That makes it a good time of year to establish some of those routines that we’ve promised ourselves to set in place but haven’t gotten around to yet.

Here’s to making this school year a productive, happy and healthy one for you and your family.

A: Sports physicals (Pre-participation Physical Evaluations, aka PPEs) have been established in order to promote athletic participation in a safe and healthy manner. Their purpose is Steven Cuff, not to disqualify athletes, but rather to identify conditions that M.D., is a could potentially put the athlete at risk of injury or sudden Sports Medicine death during competition.

Physician at PPEs should be scheduled at least six weeks before the Nationwide start of the season in order to provide adequate time to Children’s Hospital rehabilitate injuries or further investigate medical problems so as to minimize the likelihood of disqualification. The PPE consists of both a medical history and a physical examination. The history form should be filled out by the parent and child ahead of time. After going over the history form, the medical provider will perform a physical exam and then determine whether the athlete is cleared for participation, is disqualified or needs further evaluation before a final decision can be made.

Overall, less than 2 percent of kids are disqualified, but up to 13 percent may require further investigation before being cleared. If performed in your doctor’s office, the PPE may be done in conjunction with your child’s yearly checkup, but if completed in a different setting it should NEVER take the place of this annual visit.

Many families have little or no financial cushion — 43 percent of Ohioans have no savings to cover emergencies, and many of those make more than $50,000 a year, according to the Corporation for Enterprise Development. They’re living one hiccup away from financial disaster. A larger-thanexpected utility bill, a flat tire, or a job loss or injury can push them over the edge.

If you are one of the 43 percent, what do you do if you know you just won’t be able to pay every single bill?

“You’ve got to prioritize,” said Cara Hill, central Ohio division manager for the financial counseling firm Apprisen. The first priorities should be housing, utilities, food and medicine.

When it comes to housing, homeowners have a lot more options should money come up short. Mortgage companies have an incentive to keep borrowers in their homes and out of default, and can sometimes refer you to financial counseling services, modify the loan or grant a forbearance. “The key is to give them a heads-up as soon as you know you will be late. The earlier you contact them, the more likely they are to work with you,” Hill said.

If you’re renting, you might have some lenience from the landlord, but typically options are more limited, because their only incentive is to keep the rent checks coming. You might be eligible for emergency assistance via social service programs.

Next up are utilities, “which doesn’t mean Internet and cable,” Hill said. “You have to have the lights and water on, especially if you have elderly or children at home.”

It’s just as important not to dig the hole deeper by seeking a quick fix such as a payday loan or title loan. “It’s harder to get out of financial distress once you’ve taken that kind of loan,” Hill said.

It’s also essential to try to identify the root cause of the shortage if it’s not as obvious as a job loss or disability.

Call the utility company. “They can assess usage, check for leaks and make sure there are no billing mistakes,” Hill said. They can also set up a budget plan or repayment plan to ease the financial strain.

Also, call early and often if you can’t pay “because they will have documentation of your financial struggle and your desire to pay.”

They might also be able to refer you to emergency assistance programs that can help with the bills if you’re facing cutoff. “If you don’t reach out, no one can really help you,” Hill said.

When it comes to food, “create a plan, with three meals a week you can cook then stretch out over a few days,” Hill said. Buy bulk packs of meat and supplies, rather

than odds and ends. Seek out the local food pantry, as well as farmers’ markets “where you can get healthy foods at low costs.”

Medicine is a bit trickier. Check with your doctor, hospital and drug manufacturer to see if you can get samples. “Ask the manufacturer for a discount,” Hill said.

Check with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and websites such as NeedyMeds.org or the Partnership for Prescription Assistance Program at PPARX.org.

“It takes work,” Hill said, “but help is out there. It’s not longterm, but might get you through.”

If you’re juggling bills for more than two months, it’s time to seek free financial counseling. Contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling to find an agency in your area.

“You’ll meet with an unbiased certified financial counselor, they’ll take a detailed look at what you’re making and spending,” and help you come up with a plan to break the cycle, Hill said. They can also link you to community resources for help.

What Makes this different

Well, look at it! It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen at the Columbus Zoo before and it’s like nothing that most other zoos offer.

“First of all, it’s large,” said Emmets, “but so is Africa.

You feel very much like you’re in Africa.”

The focal point is the sprawling “savanna” on which roams a rotating cast of gazelles, cranes, giraffes, ostriches, zebras, wildebeests, kudus, lions and other birds (there’s a strategy to which animals go out when, since some of them find each other tasty, explained Emmets). It’s home to 165 animals in all.

Giving the animals this much space to wander but still making it possible for humans to get up close represents a quantum shift in zoo-management thinking. Stalf, the Zoo’s CEO, said it’s about “immersive exhibits” and “connecting people with wild life. It’s telling the story of the habitat.”

Why does it matter? Well, besides the necessity of treating animals more humanely, Stalf said it’s about educating future leaders: “We know the next Jack Hanna resides here in Ohio and she’s 5 years old.”

The Lions

Next along the pathway are the lions. You wouldn’t know it now, but at first the three lions — two females and one male — had problems adjusting to their spacious new home.

“They didn’t realize how close the people are,” Emmets said. But the lure of a bush-airplane wing that has air-conditioning running through it helped get the big cats over the initial jitters. Now they’re pros and loll luxuriously against the plate glass windows, often planting their paws on the panes, making for great photo opportunities (which the docents are always ready to help with).

A less-expected highlight of the lions’ new home is the window it provides on the animals’ “romantic” moments: In other words, you may get to witness the lions mating. Columbus’s lions “are approved for breeding,” Emmets explained, and docents will expertly narrate the proceedings when it happens, but she and fellow docent McClung, a lion specialist, recommend parents make their own choices about what they want their children to see and learn about.

Keeper Talk: 12:30 p.m. The highlight is seeing the lions let the keepers perform health checks on them.

The daily cheetah runs, which take place at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the “watering hole” viewing area (about halfway through the region), were an immediate hit and attract big crowds, so big that Emmets recommends getting yourself a spot along the railing 20 to 30 minutes early. You’ll get to see the cheetahs (Bella and Bebe) bolt out of a building, chasing a stuffed toy they’ve been trained with treats to chase. And they take their chasing work very seriously: “Sometimes they cheat and cut across,” advised Emmets. One of the zoo’s interpreters also provides a very informative narration about the animals.

Tip: If it’s raining or the ground is still muddy from a previous rain, they won’t stage the cheetah runs (it’s kind of hard to take those corners at 60 mph (their top speed) in the mud).

Another tip: If your little ones don’t have the patience for staking out an early spot on the railings, be advised that the cheetahs do plenty of running in their regular enclosure and it’s very up close and personal.

The Giraffes

Though the giraffe “shamba” is the farthest exhibit area from the entrance, Emmets advises going here first, especially if you want to feed the giraffes ($3 with feeding sessions at 9 and 11 a.m., and 1, 3 and 5 p.m.). Each feeding, except the 9 a.m. one, lasts about 30 minutes.

The first tends to last 45-60 minutes because it can take visitors a little longer to get there when the main gates open at 9 a.m. If the giraffes balk at eating, the staff won’t take your money. And another thing: don’t try to hug or touch the giraffes. “Everybody wants to,” said Emmets, “but they’re not warm and fuzzy.”

Tip: Kapawa, the youngest giraffe, is the best one to try feeding: “He’s a known eater,” said Emmets.

Groveport resident Laura Slaby has plenty of choices when it comes to planning close-to-home outings for her four daughters.

The family enjoys visiting the area’s numerous parks and attending the city’s many free or low-cost, kid-friendly events.

“They have programs frequently — very frequently,” she said. “We can’t make it to all of them.”

The city has focused on becoming “Central Ohio’s recreation destination,” said Kyle Lund, director of parks and recreation.

“With just over 5,200 residents, the city of Groveport has many amenities that many larger communities can only dream of,” Lund said.

Nonresidents can take advantage of most of the recreational opportunities in the historic community located southeast of Columbus.

The Groveport Recreation Center opened in 2004. The 67,000-square-foot facility features a fitness center, elevated track, indoor pool and a rock wall. Nonresidents can purchase a day pass for $10. Children ages 12 and younger cost $7.

The center hosts birthday parties, visits with Santa Claus and other special events throughout the year.

Across the street from the recreation

center is the Groveport Aquatic Center.

The facility, which opened in the spring of 2003, has won Columbus Parent’s Best of Columbus award the last two years for Best Outdoor Municipal Pool. The center offers a zero-depth entry pool, in-water playground, lazy river with inner tubes and two water slides. The facility’s concession stand is operated by Dairy Queen and serves many of the items on the fastfood restaurant’s menu. Day passes cost $6 for residents, $8 for nonresidents.

Groveport also is home to Motts Military Museum founded by Warren Motts.

The museum includes Motts’ collection of Civil War artifacts and military items from other eras, as well. Soldiers and their families have generously donated uniforms, ID tags and weapons from many of the wars fought by U.S. soldiers. Kids will particularly love the collection of military vehicles located behind the museum.

The Slaby girls, who range in age from 3 to 6, regularly attend the free preschool-type classes at Crooked Alley KidSpace. The drop-in play group is offered Tuesdays through Fridays from 10

to 11:30 a.m. The program, which is open to children from birth to 6 years old, focuses on movement, letter recognition and crafting, said Angela Martin, play group coordinator. Weekly themes range from space to holidays to animals.

Children — and their caregivers — enjoy the socialization the program offers, she said. Parents often ask questions and share advice, Martin added.

“It generates conversation with parents,” Martin said. “They see that they’re not alone.”

The city also offers special events and children’s classes in the facility, which can be rented for parties. Crooked Alley also features an on-your-honor lending li- brary of children’s books.

In good weather, the Slaby kids also play at Degenhart Park, Three Creeks Metro Park and Walnut Woods Metro Park.

Degenhart Park has a nice mix of new and old playground equipment: Think tall metal slide sitting in the sun and old-school jungle gym.

The park has plenty of mature trees that provide shade and a pavilion with picnic tables.

Three Creeks, so named because it is where Alum, Big Walnut and Blacklick

creeks join, offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Visitors can bike, hike, fish and canoe. Birdwatchers flock to the park, where more than 100 species of birds have been spotted.

The new play area at Walnut Woods has lots of kid appeal. The nature-themed play area includes climbing toys that look like rocks and a spider web. The park also offers a 1.5-mile monarch trail and 4-acre dog park.

If the park’s greenery inspires you to garden, be sure to check out Dill’s Greenhouse. The family-owned business sells plants, shrubs, fruit trees, statuary and much more. The greenhouse also hosts classes throughout the year and a fall festival in October.

For indoor fun, Cake Decor offers classes for kids and adults. The store, which sells cake-decorating and candymaking supplies, teaches kids to decorate cupcakes and mold chocolate.

For food you don’t have to make yourself, try Little Italy Pizza. The family-owned business serves pizza, subs and pasta.

Salads are served with homemade dressing that diners can buy by the quart.

For ice cream, locals favor Dairy Queen. In addition to the pool concession stand, the city has a full-size Dairy Queen on Main Street.

When Avery Ward’s grandparents started the family business, it was a grocery store. Chuck and Janet Ward opened Chuck’s Little Giant grocery on Main Street in Groveport in 1966.

The store flourished and the couple bought the building where it was located. When Chuck Ward saw chain grocery stores taking hold in central Ohio during the late 1970s, he decided to pursue something else.

The family opened Little Italy Pizza in 1979, said Avery Ward, whose father, Nick, currently runs the restaurant. His grandmother, Janet, still does the bookkeeping.

“We’ve kept it mostly the same,” said 17-year-old Avery, who runs the pizzeria’s website and handles its social media. “All of our dough and noodles are made in-house every day.”

Do you think the restaurant is a big part of the local community?

There’s a huge connection. We put a joke on our Facebook page on April Fools’ Day that we were closing. People came into the restaurant and said, “You can’t do that.” People always tell us their memories of going to Little Italy after football games and baseball games.

Tell us about your salad dressing.

It’s very, very popular. My grandma made the recipe when she was younger. Everybody craves our salad dressing. People come in and buy it by the quart so they can put it on their salads at home.

What do you recommend a first-time diner order at the restaurant?

You can’t go wrong with pizza but you probably should try the fettuccini. It’s made with homemade noodles and meat sauce and baked until it’s golden brown.

Have you grown up working at the restaurant?

I always came in every single day in the summer with my dad to make pizza. When I was 13, I started taking over the computer stuff. The POS (point of sales) system evolved into my hands. I do all of our online marketing.

What’s it like working in a family business?

Sometimes it’s kind of frustrating working with my dad because he’s stubborn-headed. We’ll get there.

By Melissa Kossler Dutton y children’s exposure to Harry Potter has been very different than my own.

I read the books as an adult, waiting impatiently for J.K. Rowling to finish each installment. When the movies were released, I saw a few of them but didn’t rush out each time. I was glad to have the opportunity to read most of the series before watching the films so I could conjure up my own version of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its neighboring village, Hogsmeade.

My kids watch the movie after they finish each book and have come to envision the sets and characters as they appear in the Warner Brothers’ adaptations.

That connection to the movies made their visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando all the more wondrous. They were beyond excited when we told them that during our trip to Florida, we would have the chance to visit Ollivanders wand shop and sample Butterbeer, a staple at every Hogwarts celebration.

I’ll admit I was pretty excited, too. I rushed them through Seuss Landing in Universal’s Islands of Adventure to get to the original Harry Potter attractions, located at the back of the park. (This

summer, Universal opened a Diagon Alley addition to the Wizarding World on the Universal Studios side of the park.)

The Wizarding World has a distinctly different feel than the rest of the park. It’s easy to imagine that you have arrived in a small village in the English countryside.

We were eager to check out Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a ride that lets you enter by walking through Hogwarts and viewing several iconic spots including Professor Sprout’s greenhouse and the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. Once you board the ride, prepare to soar about the castle and its grounds, reliving some of Harry’s most memorable adventures. Kids who haven’t finished the book series may be in for a couple of minor spoilers. My oldest son exited the ride asking: “When did Ron join the Quidditch team?”

Unfortunately, my youngest was not tall enough to ride this motion simulator. The park does allow non-riders to take a walking tour of the castle, which he enjoyed.

From there, we headed to the Flight of the Hippogriff, a coaster made for younger kids with only minor dips and turns.

The line winds you around Hagrid’s hut and pumpkin patch. While waiting in line, my other observant youngster pointed out that in the books Hagrid’s hut is made of wood. At Universal, however, the hut is made of stone to match the rest of the village — and the movies.

Since neither kid was tall enough for Dragon Challenge, we skipped it.

We spent a good deal of time meandering through the village. We loved the little touches like the “wanted” poster of Sirius Black and the haunted bathrooms. Butterbeer tasted as good as we had imagined.

I was a little overwhelmed by the extent of the commercialization. You can buy a wand, chocolate frog or a “Sneakoscope,” which is used to detect people who are untrustworthy. The gift shops also sell oodles of Hogwarts merchandise depicting the Gryffindor lion and other house mascots. We managed to get away with just one purchase — a $40 wand.

During our visit last fall, the Hogwarts Express was a stationary train that served as a good photo op. Now that the Harry Potter expansion has

opened, a working version of the train takes visitors from Hogsmeade to Diagon Alley, the wizarding marketplace.

My kids don’t even know about the expansion, which doubles the size of the Harry Potter attractions at Universal, and they already are planning a second visit.

For fans of the series, visiting the park is an exciting way to bring the books to life.

She used a laser pointer to draw our attention to rocks that have formed into interesting shapes. She pointed out a bear, canoe and an elephant.

We also saw living rock formations, fossils and places where human hands have damaged the natural wonder.

The boys were tickled to learn a stagecoach robber had used the caves as a hideout.

After the tour, we headed into the museum. It houses an interesting collection of fossils, Native American artifacts and geodes.

In addition to gem mining, the attraction offers miniature golf, a playground and a nature trail. Visitors are welcome to picnic at the shelter house or relax on the front porch of the extensive gift shop.

Located about 20 miles north of Columbus, Olentangy Indian Caverns is great educational and recreational day trip.

When it was time to head into the cavern, I was a little nervous because I occasionally experience claustrophobia.

The caverns were so large and well-lighted, I didn’t have any problems.

Things were different when the Wyandot tribe used the caverns in the 1600s. Back then, it would have been so dark they would not have been able to make out their hand in front of their face, the tour guide said. The tribe likely used the cave sparingly to store food, hide from enemies and escape excessive weather.

We traveled down 58 stairs to get to the caves.

Native Americans would have climbed down the original rocky shaft or thrown a tree into the opening to use as a makeshift ladder.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 50-minute tour. The tour guide was friendly and informative. She interacted with all of the children and

were thrilled when I said they could mine for gems. They ran over to the sluice, grabbed a pan and dumped out their bags. They were well-occupied until it was time for the next tour. They spent about a half-hour poring over the contents of their bags and then began investigating the leftovers from previous prospectors.

At one point, Alex shouted: “I hit the jackpot. I found gold.”

To which Nick replied, “You’re a fool.”

Indeed, Alex had turned up a piece of pyrite, aka “fool’s gold.”

he kids were excited about visiting Olentangy Indian Caverns near Delaware.

They wanted to know how the caves would compare to Old Man’s Cave in Hocking Hills and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. The underground caverns can’t compete in size to Mammoth Cave, which is the longest known cave system in the world. But the property is much more extensive than the above-the-ground recess of Old Man’s Cave that recluse Richard Rowe called home in Logan.

Paper-Bag Book Covers

While our regular columnist, Olivera Bratich, and her staff at Wholly Craft get settled into their new digs at 3515 N. High St., we here at Columbus Parent are stepping in with a Back-to-School craft project.

It seems like not many kids wrap their textbooks with Ye Olde Paper-Bag Covers anymore. But these covers are such an ingenious, environmentally friendly and cheap alternative to nylon stretchy covers — and loads of fun to customize!

WhaTyou need • One regular-size paper grocery bag (17 inches by 11.75 inches by 6.75 inches) per textbook • Scissors • Yardstick • Pencil • Drawing or decorating supplies (water-color markers, gel pens, colored pencils, crayons, stickers: Sharpie markers and glue should NOT be used as they might bleed through the paper onto the book)

HOW you do it 1. In order to get the most paper possible from a bag, gently peel the bag open

along the seam in the center (it’s lightly glued shut, so just a gentle pull will get it open without ripping). Then use the scissors to cut the bottom panel off. Once done, you’ll have a very large rectangle of material to work with.

Lay the paper rectangle (printedside up, if anything is printed on it) on a flat surface (such as a table or the floor).

Center the textbook on this rectangle so there is an equal amount of paper above and below the textbook’s top and bottom.

Use the yardstick and a pencil to mark straight parallel lines that are each about 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch above the textbook’s top and bottom edges.

Remove the textbook and fold the paper-bag material inward along those marked lines, creating two “hems.”

4.

Place the textbook (cover-side down now) with its spine parallel to the vertical center of the paper-bag rectangle and centered between the two hems, leaving that 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch clearance on either side.

5. Fold the right side of the hemmed rectangle over the textbook, then, hold-

ing the paper to the back cover of the textbook, open the back cover and slip the hemmed paper onto the cover like a sleeve. Smooth the paper and close the book cover so that the paper cover pulls flat. You can tape the sides of this sleeve together for a more secure fit.

Use the scissors to cut off enough of the left side of the paper-bag rectangle to leave about the same amount of a fold that you just slipped onto the back cover.

Then slip this “sleeve” onto front cover.

Tape it together if desired.

Decorate your book cover and you are ready to head back to school!

“I love your kids,” I told Amy while shoving pizza in my face, “but I wasn’t ready to go immediately into musical mode.” She and Eric looked at one another, eyes twinkling.

“So you’re saying that you need a break between having a job and being a mom?” asked Eric.

And as the song “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” went through my head for the 250th time, I had an epiphany. I knew right then why we were at the wine bar.

The plan: a puppet show at the Alum Creek Amphitheater in Westerville. Re-enacting Frozen on the playground equipment was just a logical extension of the entertainment. Luckily, I’d seen the movie and knew the premise. But I was a little slower than West/Elsa at conjuring up exact scenes from the plot.

Free-range kids were everywhere, all headed toward me. To my left, an army of crawlers.

To my right, a toddler who’d walk up, stare, then ask to be carried.

Everywhere, parents were chasing children. Just like Frozen Tag, but faster. They looked exhausted.

Everything ended abruptly, due to an oncoming storm. Eric carried a child under each arm as we headed to the car and, eventually, the wine shop (so Aunt Jill could have some grown-up time with Mommy). In the car, West announced that he preferred Frozen to the puppet show. To be fair, the movie has better production quality. Bigger budget, too.

I just needed a second to breathe. To do something mindless like scroll through Twitter before going into full-throttle “Aunt Jill” mode. After a late workday and 25 miles of traffic, I arrived at Amy’s place completely unprepared to handle the energy of a 6-yearold and a 4-year-old.

All students, whatever their socioeconomic, ethnocultural, or linguistic background, must have opportunities to learn and to grow, both cognitively and socially. When students can make personal connections to their learning, and when they feel secure in their learning environment, their true capacity will be realized in their achievement. A commitment to equity and inclusive instruction in the A+ Children’s Academy Community School classrooms are therefore critical to enabling all students to succeed in school and, consequently, to become productive and contributing members of society.

To create effective environments for learning, teachers pay close attention to avoid all forms of bias and stereotyping in learning activities, which can quickly alienate students and limit their learning in core subjects such as math and reading. Teachers are aware of the needs of individual students and try to provide a variety of experiences and encourage multiple perspectives, so that the diversity of the class is recognized and all students feel respected and valued. Grades 4 - 6 can be challenging for parents and teachers alike because of the child’s own belief system has begun to develop about one’s self. “By the 4th grade, it’s not uncommon to hear a child say ‘I’m no good in math’, or ‘I can’t read’, said Mindi Hardgrow, Principal of A+ Children’s Academy. She said that the most import encouragement always comes from the parents at home. She continued to say that “Our teachers support our students on a daily basis, affirming their strengths and helping them find solutions to turn their perceived weakness into opportunities for growth.”

Kim Lunsford received her Bachelors of Science in Middle School and Secondary Education. “I find teaching this inquisitive and quirky age group to be both an exciting challenge and a fun learning adventure. To see the joy on their faces when they learn a new skill is absolutely priceless and something I wouldn’t trade for the world,” she said enthusiastically. Kim continued to say, “They become my kiddos from day one and through relationship building and extensive work, we develop a family atmosphere that is very rare in today’s educational world. I can’t wait to see what the new year holds in store and what incredible adventures we can go on together.”

A+ Children’s Academy Community School will be opening its doors for its third year this fall for the 2014-1015 school year. Mount Carmel Moms2B, Moms2B is a community program working to empower women in high risk neighborhoods throughout Columbus by helping them deliver healthy babies in an effort to reduce racial disparities and infant mortality. Beginning this year, Mount Carmel’s Welcome Home Program will serve any of the women in the Moms2B program, providing a nurse who will make a free home visit after their baby is born. These visits usually happen within 14 days of discharge and will happen as quickly as
