Columbus International Auto Show gears up for 2015

By Carolyn Dix Dispatch Media Group It is time to get this show on the road. The Columbus International Auto Show, presented by Huntington, is returning to the Greater Columbus Convention Center March 19-22. Whether you are a gearhead looking for the latest in all things auto, are in the market for a new car or just want something fun and different to do with the family, the Columbus International Auto Show has something for everyone. “It’s a really great way to celebrate the automotive industry. It’s cool to see all the new models and technologies and to get a sneak peek of the concept cars and prototypes of the latest and greatest before they’re even available,” said Marie Gilman, marketing and events manager for the Columbus Auto Dealers Association. Looking for a new set of wheels? Rev up your car search with the convenience of a one-stop shop, with 43 manufacturers available in one location. “You can get in the car, test it out and really see how it feels,” Gilman said, adding that with so many vehicles in one place, you can compare between models and manufacturers easily and conveniently. In fact, “about 65 percent (of shoppers) end up purchasing a car within the next 12 months,” she noted. Want a more hands-on experience? This year’s ride-and-drive events from Ford and Mazda give you a chance to get behind the wheel and go for a ride in the 2015 aluminum-bodied Ford F-150, or you can choose among multiple models from Mazda including the Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda CX-9 or Mazda CX-5. Weekend warriors will have the chance to steer off the beaten track with the indoor Ram Off-Road Experience. You can take the 2015 Ram 1500 or Ram 3500 for a spin over dirt, hills, logs and the Ram “mountain” for the ultimate in off-roading. “Driving around the course shows you all the capabilities,” Gilman said. “It’s always a crowd-pleaser, and it gets bigger and better every year.” Do you feel the need, the need for speed? The Columbus International Auto Show will put you on the fast track to your racing dreams. Snap a selfie with Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s No.

This Toca-tuned Hyundai Genesis was featured at the SEMA Show in Vegas last fall, and it will be on display at The Columbus International Auto Show March 19-22.

88 Nationwide show car, and then take the wheel in the heart-pounding racing simulator. You can even win a signed replica Dale Earnhardt Jr. racing helmet. If Formula 1 is more your speed, be sure to check out the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car in the Infiniti display at the show. You can also check out the Hyundai Genesis, tuned up by Toca Marketing Group, from the 2014 SEMA Show (a premier automotive specialty products trade event), tricked out with a twin turbocharged version of Hyundai’s 5.0-liter Tau V-8 engine with 600 horsepower. Is three-wheel drive the new way to ride? Motorcycle enthusiasts can get a close-up look at the Polaris Slingshot, a hot new three-wheeled (and Batmobile-resembling) motorcycle that debuted in December. You can even get a glimpse into the future. Check out cars that will not be available until 2016, like the 2016 Buick Cascada, just revealed at the Detroit auto show, the 2016 Lincoln MKX, 2016 Ford Explorer, 2016 Honda HR-V, 2016 Acura MDX, 2016 Acura RDX, 2016 Acura ILX and 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport. You can also check out luxury vehicles like the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C and the 2015 Aston Martin DB9 Volante. Or, go back in time with classic cars like the 1940 Ford, the Buick Gran Sport, Chrysler Town & Country and Ford Thunderbird. But the Columbus International Auto Show isn’t just fun for adults. There are plenty of family-friendly activities the kids will enjoy, from the creations of Matt the Balloon Guy to the amazing face-painting feats by Jen. Kids can take the highway to the Adventure Zone to play at the COSI science spots or take on the rockclimbing wall. Your little ones can get crafty with American Girl to make

kid-sized and doll-sized travel tags, learn to play lacrosse with players from the Ohio Machine and get wild with animal visitors from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Word on the street is that the NCAA tournament will be happening at the same time as the show, so feel free to park yourself in the lounge to keep up with all the March Madness (and your bracket) with TVs showing the games and a cash bar. And Buckeye fans, be sure to stop by Saturday afternoon for a meet and

greet with former Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman. Tickets for the Columbus International Auto Show can be purchased at the box office or online at columbusautoshow.com. Tickets for adults are $10 at the box office or $8 online, and student tickets are $5 at the box office with a student ID. Tickets for seniors (55+) are $5 at the box office on Senior Day only, Friday, March 20. Children (9 and under) are free when accompanied by an adult.

GMC

Terrain

New for 2015: A standard OnStar-based 4G LTE built-in Wi-Fi hot spot for all aboard to stay connected. With GMC focused on Yukon and Sierra HD intros, the small and popular Terrain carries over with few changes. Denali model adds more appeal … and chrome. Drivetrain: A thrifty 2.4-liter four-cylinder drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, which does double duty to deliver power from the 3.6-liter V-6. All-wheel drive is available with either engine. If you think GMC’s styling is divisive on the larger

pickups and SUVs, it’s even more so on the smaller Terrain. In addition, the ultraluxurious Denali sub-brand is available on this, its smallest vehicle. More chrome on the broad grille and exhaust pipes, satin touches, unique lights and body-colored fascias and rocker moldings highlight the exterior, while softer leather for the seats, doors and steering wheel, along with “smoked” mahogany inserts differentiate the cabin from lesser trims. Unusual for a Denali, the Terrain version can be had with either the base 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder or the 301-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6. All

2015 GMC Terrain

Terrains get six-speed automatic transmissions and both engines can be had with front- or optional all-wheel drive. Base SLE models feature the usual air/tilt/power accessories along with a few unusual standard features such as a rear-vision camera and 12 months of OnStar. Every Terrain model gets a new audio system that uses a 7-inch touch screen. There’s an available safety package with forwardcollision alert, lane-departure warning and rearparking assist. Ride and drives

When it comes to the latest car models and technology, seeing is believing … but going for a test drive is much more fun. The three ride and drives by Ford, Mazda and Ram let you get behind the wheel for the full driving experience. • Ford F-150 Drive the Future of Tough The Ford F-150 has been the top-selling truck in the U.S. for more than 30 years, and now is your chance to see why. Hit the road for a test drive in the newly redesigned 2015 Ford F-150, still built Ford tough, but this year made out of aluminum, making it lighter weight and more fuel efficient. After you drive this feature-filled truck, be sure to enter to win your very own 2015 Ford F-150. • Mazda Ride & Drive You can “zoom-zoom” your way around Goodale Street in a variety of 2015 Mazda models.

Hit the road in the compact Mazda3, midsize Mazda6, Mazda CX-9 SUV or CX-5 crossover, and then hit the Mazda lounge for food, drinks and to meet with product specialists. You will even receive a Mazda gift card after your test drive. • Ram Off-Road Experience Prefer to have your driving experience on the road less traveled? Ram is offering drivers the chance to go off-roading indoors with the 2015 Ram 1500 or Ram 3500. Traverse over the Ram “mountain” and steer your way over logs, dirt and hills to see what this powerful truck can handle. Be sure to buckle up — it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

No. 88 Nationwide Show Car and Racing Simulator

You may not be able to take Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s show car for a test drive, but speed demons can get their hearts racing flying down the track at 200 mph in the exhilarating racing simulator. Be sure to grab a photo with Dale Earnhardt’s No. 88 Nationwide show car, and you can even win a signed replica Dale Earnhardt Jr. racing helmet.

The Adventure Zone

Heading to the auto show? Bring the whole family along for the ride. There are plenty of fun-filled activities for kids at the Adventure Zone.

PHOTO BY JOHN KNOUFF The Ram Off-Road Experience, as seen from last year’s show, gives drivers the chance to traverse a simulated mountain, logs and dirt to get a feel for how this truck handles.

• COSI science spots Kids will have plenty of hands-on fun as they learn and explore at the COSI science spots kiosks. • Rock climbing Sometimes even a car cannot get you where you want to go, especially when where you want to go is straight up. Kids can get in the spirit of adventure and test their skills on the rock-climbing wall. • American Girl Kids ages 8 and up can get crafty with American Girl. Inspired by American Girl Grace’s travels, kids can create luggage tags for themselves and doll-sized tags for their

dolls, the perfect way to keep track of everyone’s luggage when on the go. • The Ohio Machine Children can meet the players of Columbus’ Major League Lacrosse team, the Ohio Machine, and they can learn how to play. • Matt the Balloon Guy Matt the Balloon Guy has been creating balloon works of art since he was a freshman in high school, and his skills have taken him throughout the U.S. and across the ocean. When it comes to balloons, Matt the Balloon Guy is the real deal. Ask him to create a balloon of anything

your heart desires, and he is up to the challenge. • Face Doodles by Jen Jen will help kids put their best painted faces forward with everything from fullface artwork to smaller face doodles. • Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Animals Things have a way of getting wild when furry and feathered visitors arrive from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Your kids can come and learn about the zoo animals on Saturday and Sunday from 1-2 p.m.

The Columbus Automobile Dealers Association

Celebrating 100 years of service Since 1915, the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) has served as a liaison for franchised new-car dealers and the surrounding community. The association answers consumer inquiries, holds educational and legal seminars, bonds dealers for sales tax, monitors legislation and tracks new- and used-vehicle registrations in Franklin County. The CADA also promotes dealership interests and charitable endeavors with its “Drive Columbus” feature in The Columbus Dispatch. The Columbus Automobile Dealers Association works diligently to actively promote a positive image for its members, their employees and the automotive industry. The 85 dealerships in the Greater Columbus area have a significant impact on the local economy. These dealerships sell more than 81,000 new vehicles per year, lending to retail sales of $3.3 billion. Even though dealerships make up less than 5 percent of total retail establishments, dealerships contribute almost 20 percent of all retail sales in the Columbus area. Car dealers employ 5,400 employees and have a payroll of $250 million

each year. The State of Ohio has more than $135 million in sales tax collected and paid that can be attributed to the Columbus franchised automobile industry. The CADA not only makes substantial contributions to the economic strength of central Ohio through sales and employment, but also many of the dealerships make voluntary contributions to their local communities as well by donating time and financial resources to many different organizations. This year, the annual Auto Show Charity Gala will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio, St. Stephen’s Community House and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Membership with the CADA creates the opportunity to expand business markets through the Columbus International Auto Show, and it unifies a family of dealers and business people who are constantly striving for ways to broaden their horizons as salespersons, business owners and members of the Greater Columbus community. Thank you for a great 100 years, Columbus — on to the next 100!

Sixteen percent of Ohio residents will definitely buy a car in 2015, according to Huntington Bank’s 3rd Annual Midwest Economic Index. That’s twice as many as last year. Forecasts are for a solid year for the automotive industry and a banner year for buyers according to Greg Swain, regional manager of Huntington’s auto finance division. “It’s still a great time to buy,” Swain said. “Consumers are benefitting from low interest rates, high trade-in values and a wide range of manufacturer incentives. “Add to that enthusiasm for an outstanding 2015 model year, falling gas prices and the ongoing economic recovery, and we’ll continue to see strong buyer demand throughout the year.” Huntington is now in its eighth consecutive year as the presenting sponsor of the Columbus International Auto Show. The bank draws its strength, in part, from continued advancements in underwriting precision and from dealer loyalty. Huntington’s auto financing division makes financing easy. “Huntington continues to be a clear choice in auto financing as it has been for over 60 years,” said Bobby Dawes, 2015 Auto Show Committee chairman for the Columbus Automobile Dealers Association and co-owner of the Bob-Boyd Auto

PHILLIP KUMAR The Columbus Dispatch

GREG SWAIN Huntington National Bank

Twice as many Ohioans expect to buy cars this year Family. “Huntington has also been a tremendous partner in helping the Columbus Auto Dealers Association bring one of the best auto shows in the Midwest to the Columbus Convention Center March 19-22.” The automotive industry has now experienced five consecutive years of growth in the number of vehicles sold and is poised for a sixth in light of increased consumer optimism about the U.S. economy. In line with this growth, Huntington experienced its fifth consecutive year of record loan production in 2014. With loans totaling $5.2 billion, Huntington financed more cars than any other time in its history. During the year, Huntington added hundreds of dealers to its network, which now totals more than 3,800 dealers in 17 states. Huntington serves auto dealers locally and consistently delivers 70 percent of indirect loan decisions within three seconds or less. For more information, visit Huntington.com.

The ugliest one wins

At right, Jacey Deitrich, whose 1995 Dodge Neon Sport (above) won the Ugliest Car in Columbus Contest, reacts to winning a 2014 Honda Civic at last year’s show.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which car is the ugliest of them all? The popular Ugliest Car in Columbus Contest sponsored by Central Ohio Honda Dealers has triumphantly returned for a second year. Car owners submitted photos of their ugly cars online, and the public voted on which were the ugliest of the bunch. The three cars that received the most votes will be on display at the Columbus International Auto Show, and attendees will have a chance to vote for which car is indeed the worst looking one in the bunch. The owner/winner of the ugliest car will be announced on Sunday, and the winner will receive a 2015 Honda Accord LX.

Chevrolet

2015 Chevrolet Trax

Trax

New for 2015: The Trax is part of a growing niche of compact tall wagons that deliver on style, decent-sized passenger and cargo space and modest fuel consumption. Drivetrain: Chevy’s small-car turbo four-cylinder is pressed into action, as is a six-speed automatic transmission; AWD is optional. The Trax is an affordable solution for those desiring a small wagon with space for five, available all-wheel drive and a strong aversion to fuel pumps. Front seating is on the cozy side, but there’s more shoulder room in back if you limit the rider count to two. With the rear 60:40 bench

and front passenger seat folded flat there’s stowage space for plenty of bulky stuff, up to 8 feet in length. The only engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder borrowed from Chevy’s Cruise and Sonic models making 138 horsepower and 148-pound-feet of torque. It’s backed by a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls. The starting-point LS model comes with 10 airbags, including rear side-impact and front-knee inflatables plus an introductory subscription to GM’s OnStar. Air conditioning, a rearview camera, roof rack, deluxe seat covers and 16-inch aluminum wheels are also included. Stepping up

to the LT gets you a backup warning system, six-way power driver’s seat, remote starter and Chevrolet’s MyLink 7-inch touch-screen communications and infotainment system with a Bose premium audio package. The premium LTZ arrives with 18-inch wheels, leatherlike seat coverings (heated in front), auto-dimming rearview mirror and fog lights. The available all-wheeldrive system engages when the vehicle accelerates from a stop, but reverts to front-wheel drive once the car gets rolling. Wheelbase Media

Mileage (city/hwy): 26/34 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front-knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (lb.): 3,000

2015 Ford F-150 Base price (incl. destination): $26,600 Type: 2-/4-door pickup

Ford

F-150 New for 2015: Stronger, faster, lighter best describes the new aluminum-bodied F-Series; retooled from top to bottom, from bumper to tailgate and under the hood. Overview: The world’s best-selling pickup looks to hold on to its title despite General Motors and Ram charging hard to catch up. It’s the truck category that leads the way these days in technology advancements, and Ford’s adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 is one heck of a game changer. The big news is Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels, saving as much as 700 pounds in the process, depending on whether you’re talking about regular, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually lighter. That reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? Base trucks now come with a 3.5-liter V-6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while an equally new twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from last year are two of Ford’s workhorse power plants: a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 producing 365 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-liter V-8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque (up from 360/380). That leaves out last year’s 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 that was standard in the way-off-road-capable SVT Raptor (its replacement is expected to arrive by mid-2015). Inside, the cabin has been transformed and on uplevel models approaches luxury-car standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims. The FX4 off-road option package (firmer suspension, skid plates and a locking rear axle) can be added to most 4x4 models. Wheelbase Media

GMC

Canyon New for 2015: A midsize companion to the Sierra joins the GMC fleet. It’s similar to the Chevrolet Colorado, but with a bit more base content. Drivetrain: Base four-cylinder and optional V-6 available with all cab styles, as is four-wheel drive. When it comes to trucks and sport utility vehicles, General Motors tends to do things in pairs. Both the Chevrolet and GMC divisions share many similar, but moderately restyled vehicles wearing different name-

plates, including the new-for-2015 Canyon and its Chevy iteration, the Colorado. Each style can be ordered with a 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 305-horsepower V-6. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the V-6. All Canyons come with a power driver’s seat, corner steps built into the rear bumper, locking tailgates

Chevrolet

Silverado HD New for 2015: Chevy follows up on the new-for-2014 Silverado by launching a similar-looking, but beefier, 2015 Heavy Duty edition. Drivetrain: Total carryover under the hood; base 6.0-liter gas V-8; bifuel version can be switched from gasoline to natural gas; 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8 is big on torque. Chevrolet’s 2500- and 3500-series heavy-duty trucks are intended to be hard-working commercial rigs. The usual cab styles return, but the extended-cab is replaced by a new double cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. Both the 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes have been strengthened, and the rear bumper has built-in recessed steps at each corner for easier access. All HD power trains return unaltered for 2015. The base 6.0-liter gasoline V-8 puts out 360 horsepower and 380 poundfeet of torque. Chevrolet also offers a bi-fuel version of the 6.0 that can be switched from gasoline to natural gas, although power drops to 301 horses and 333 pound-feet of torque. Both engines use six-speed automatic transmissions. A GM-developed Hydramatic comes with the 6.0; and the turbo diesel employs an Allison-built unit. Chevy includes its “smart exhaust brake system” to the turbodiesel that, when coasting, holds compressed exhaust gasses inside the engine’s cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. The result is less wear and tear on the brake hardware and greater control for the driver. Included is a stability program that reduces the trailer’s tendency to wobble about, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an incline. For the 2015 model year, the HD’s maximum hauling capacity has increased to 7,374 pounds from 7,222 and conventional towing capacity has similarly increased to 19,600 pounds from 18,000. Fifth-wheel-capacity is up to 23,200 from 22,500 pounds. Since the uses for an HD pickup vary greatly, the standard and optional HD equipment on the WT (Work Truck), LT and LTZ trim levels is tremendous. And with the luxurious new “High Country” trim level, you can outfit the HD from bare-bones basic to over-the-edge luxury. Wheelbase Media

Technology 2015 It used to be just four tires, a seat and a steering wheel By TODD D. BURLAGE WHEELBASEmedia.com Cars that stop themselves, cars that talk to themselves, cars that suggest shortcuts and cars that can even drive themselves. It all sounds like something from a futuristic fantasy movie. But it’s closer than you think with some of these finding their way into the new 2015 models. According to a recent study by J.D. Power, a leading automotive trend and research analyst, vehicle reliability and fuel efficiency continue to reign as the primary criteria for new-car buyers. But with industry dependability at an all-time high and fuel prices seemingly stabilized, other kinds of technology are quickly climbing the priority list. Study results showed many modern commuters spend three hours or more behind the wheel every day, making connectivity and entertainment more of a need than a want. “That’s a lot of time staying captive in your capsule,” said Mike VanNieuwkuyk, J.D. Power global automotive executive director. “So consumers are looking for the time being spent in the vehicle to be more than transportation. It’s about being sort of a living experience, so the space now becomes much more personal and much more valuable.” And every major manufacturer is taking notice and trying to gain an industry advantage in technology, while not losing sight of dependability and efficiency demands. Following are the more notable advancements for the 2015 model year.

Staying connected The evolution of interactive technology has been steady and not so dramatic. But finally, some popular

Most of General Motors’ 2015 cars will be mobile “hot spots” where you can connect to the Internet with your various wireless devices. The fee you pay for that depends on your data usage. Automakers have all kinds of new ways to make money off of you.

In-car traffic alerts and construction notices have been around for years. But the technology found in the 2015 Honda Accord is welcoming in a new era of navigation and going off the beaten path to get a driver from Point A to Point B. Rather than simply showing only what lies directly ahead for a driver — that’s so 2014, after all — Honda’s modern satellite system monitors traffic flow throughout the area and is able to suggest shortcuts or a scenic route, the latter if there is no rush getting to Point B. This technology is expected to someday include alerts for everything from a stray critter or animal carcass on the road to upcoming patches of black ice.

Stop and Go Cars are designed to go, but manufacturers are also paying close attention and millions in research-anddevelopment dollars for when they’re stopped. To give drivers more cabin freedom during extended

The top-of-the-line 2015 Volvo XC90 is called the T80 and mixes a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. It can be driven around town in full electric mode.

models are offering buyers a Eureka moment with mobile Wi-Fi access that allows passengers to wirelessly enjoy web surfing, online gaming and Internet videos as if their moving vehicle were a basement office. The GMC Canyon, Cadillac ATS coupe and Audi A8 are a few of the 2015 models offering this hot spot service. Mobile Wi-Fi is not the only technological advancement. The 2015 Genesis and other Hyundai models include cellular telephone apps that operate systems such as remote start, auto lock-unlock and vehicle location. Navigation improvements are also an important highlight of the 2015 lineup.

stops, the 2015 Acura TLX features an Automatic Brake Hold system that keeps the vehicle at a standstill — even with the foot off the brake — until the gas pedal is again depressed. This brake-lock convenience gives drivers more mobility during an extended stop to find a dropped phone, rummage through the glove box or set an unruly child straight. The stop-start engine option is also being added to many 2015 models, including the Chevy Impala, Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler 200. This technology completely shuts off the engine when the car comes to a stop, and then refires it upon acceleration.

The Acura TLX has an available nine-speed transmission. For the Chrysler 200, it’s nine across the line.

This system diminishes both noise and air pollution and fuel consumption. It might seem like no big technical deal, but keeping all the systems running while the car is stopped (such as climate control) takes a lot of electricity. In fact, reports are that Audi will switch to a 48-volt system from the usual 12-volt system to aid start-stop tech.

Body and Soul In-car gadgets are appealing, yes, but manufacturers understand that a less-glamorous kind of technology is what truly inspires buyers. Moving further away from the bigger-and-badder-isbetter philosophy of yesteryear, engine size and vehicle weights continue to shrink while fuel efficiency continues to grow through turbocharging, lighter construction materials and other engineering advancements. The top model of the upcoming 2015 Volvo XC90 tall wagon (called the T80) uses an unprecedented combination of a small engine, supercharging, turbocharging and an electric motor. The results are passing power, electric-only efficiency around town and thrifty highway cruising. But engines are only half of the power train story. Who could have guessed about 20 years ago that anything more than a four- or five-speed automatic transmission would become standard equipment? Well, guess what, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray as well as the Chevy Silverado and Sierra 2015 models all offer an eight-speed automatic, and Acura has a ninespeed in its new TLX as does Chrysler for its 200 sedan. The idea is to keep the engine as close as possible to its most efficient operating speed range. “This (model) year really shows that manufacturers are listening to what consumers want,” VanNieuwkuyk said. “If they don’t pay attention, they’ll quickly be dismissed. There are a lot of good options out there.”

10 top rides for 2015

Some are hot, some are important and some are groundbreaking. And all of them are new. By todd D. burlage wheelbasemedia.com From luxury off-roaders to hightech electrics — and from new entries to old standards — the 2015 model year will offer new-car buyers just about anything and everything. Whether it’s the raw power of the revamped Ford Mustang, or the sheer style of the new Lexus NX, automakers are answering the needs of a picky public with new designs and fresh models. Of the 30 or so brand-new offerings for 2015, we’ve picked 10 notables that are grabbing headlines.

BMW i3 In an effort to blend eco-consciousness with creature comfort, BMW launched this stylish and lightweight electric vehicle that provides the cabin space of a 3 Series sedan while carrying a 115-mile range in ECO PRO mode. It also has a battery that can be fully recharged in 30 minutes. Well aware of potential buyers’ range worries, BMW offers an optional backup gasoline generator engine with a 2.4-gallon gas tank. Pricing starts at $42,275. Cadillac ATS Coupe Cadillac has put forth a sexy new ATS coupe for 2015. The differences are subtle between the two- and fourdoor models; the coupe is slightly wider, shorter in height and a bit longer than its two-year-older brother. Powered by a redesigned 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, Caddy vows the ATS coupe will run much smoother than the larger CTS coupe that it is essentially replacing. Base price starts around $30,000. Chrysler 200 It is perhaps interesting that cars intended to appeal to the widest possible swath of customers have less excitement going on. This is where the new midsize Chrysler 200 appears to separate itself from the pack. It’s an important car for Chrysler, one that’s rather pretty, powerful (when properly

Chrysler 200

bmw i3

cadillac Ats coupe

ford mustang equipped) and can be ordered with all-wheel drive. Two engine options — the standard 173-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 283-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 — produce performance near the top of this segment. A base price of $21,000 is also enticing.

Ford Mustang Arguably the most hyped of the 2015 models, Ford is all in, making major updates to its iconic Pony Car. The new four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine produces 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. The all-new independent rear suspension, which is a first for the Mustang as standard equipment, promises to bring noticeable handling and performance improvements to this 50-year-old nameplate. Pricing starts at $23,600. Jeep Renegade Smaller and perhaps not as rugged looking as other Jeep models,

Lexus NX Renegade is still designed to handle anything from smooth highways to tough terrain. Designed in America and built in Italy to be sold around the world, it’s no coincidence that this Jeep is tiny. It has to be to gain worldwide traction. It also happens to slot in nicely below the new Cherokee in the lineup here. Its smallish stature still offers adequate cabin comfort and storage space, and it also helps keep cost down ($17,000 to start) to lure a younger demographic. Base models come with a 160-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder.

Lexus RC Not unlike Cadillac’s endeavor with its ATS coupe, the RC is a scaled-down spinoff of the popular Lexus IS sedan. The two-door RC will sacrifice some rear headroom compared to a traditional Lexus, but it will not skimp on umphh, carrying the same 306-horsepower V-6 as the IS line. A high-performance RC model will feature a V-8 that turns 460 horsepower. Lexus NX In a blossoming compact luxurytall-wagon market, Lexus is offering a vehicle aimed at buyers who want something smaller and less costly, but still want the nice stuff. Built off what is essentially a Toyota RAV4 platform, the NX features a new turbo engine, the first in a Toyota/Lexus product since the Supra sports car from 20 years ago. This 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 235 horsepower, rivaling models such as the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5. Expect pricing to start around $40,000. Lincoln MKC

The MKC compact tall wagon continues to be called a Ford Escape in fancy clothing because of the shared platform. Lincoln adamantly dispels this comparison, emphasizing a luxurious all-leather interior, all-wheel drive, and fresh technology. The MKC carries two engine options, the beefiest being Ford’s 2.3-liter “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder that makes nearly 300 horsepower. It’s the same engine offered in the new Ford Mustang. Pricing starts at about $34,000.

Porsche Macan The hot new Macan compact tall wagon appears to be a seven-eighthscale version of the highly successful Cayenne sport utility vehicle. Porsche expects the Macan to cut into the market share of similar models such as the Audi Q5, which, not coincidentally, provides the Macan’s basic architecture. All models come with all-wheel drive and some sort of turbocharged V-6. The larger Cayenne doesn’t. The Macan S, starting at $49,900, carries

a 340-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6. For a whopping $23,000 more, the soupedup V-6 in the Turbo model makes 400 horsepower.

Subaru WRX STI Talk about changes, this racy machine has a new platform, updated suspension and a roomier and more comfy cabin. This is essentially an entirely new vehicle, sans the standard six-speed manual transmission and the 2.5-liter turbo-four-cylinder engine that produces 305 horsepower, propelling this light ride to 60 mph from rest in 5.3 seconds. Performance was Subaru’s mission, and it hit the mark with what is being called the best-handling WRX STI ever produced. Pricing starts at $34,495. Note: Vehicles in article may or may not be at the Columbus International Auto Show. jeep renegade

2015 Chevrolet Equinox

Chevrolet

Equinox New for 2015: With so much attention being paid to Chevrolet’s full-size SUVs, the strong-selling Equinox remains unchanged for 2015. Drivetrain: A 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder or an optional 3.6-liter V-6 is available in the midrange and top-line models. Optional all-wheel drive is available across the range. Although it has been a couple of years since Chevrolet added a larger optional V-6 engine and some additional content, the company figured that that was more than enough to keep its potential Equinox customers happy. Even after five years, it’s obviously “just right” for plenty of folks. Clever touches abound in the design, like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-up height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body area.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. It’s simply gorgeous and includes dual gloveboxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an 8-inch range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder reigns as a base engine with its 21/32 mpg city/highway fuel-economy rating. The optional 3.6-liter V-6 with 301 horsepower outclasses every other compact tall wagon in the segment. It earns a 17/25 mpg rating, which is pretty solid given the power level. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/ locks/mirrors, etc.) comes in base versions, as does a 7-inch touch screen to work the standard audio system. Moving up into the top-line models adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18- or 19-inch wheels — the larger of which are chromed on LTZ models — extra trim and premium audio. The only new feature for 2015 is an OnStar-based in-car Wi-Fi hot spot that’s standard with a three-month trial. Wheelbase Media
