What began as a fun story for her now 12-year-old daughter, Eirann, Clintonville author Lisa McClatchy’s

children’s book Dear Tyrannosaurus Rex will be featured by Scholastic nationwide in its school book fair program starting this month. “She loved dinosaurs as a young child and would write letters to them inviting them over to our house,” said McClatchy, who is currently working on a novel for middle schoolers and two picture books.

The Gateway Film Center and the Ohio State University Nisonger Center have begun showing sensory friendly screenings of movies the second Saturday morning of every month. The movies are newly released or family favorites and shown with reduced sound levels, increased lighting and no previews.

BRADY BRINGS IT Our cover kid this month is Brady Sanford. This 6-year-old Worthington resident doesn’t just look tough: He is tough.

At the age of 4, Brady went to his parents, Dan and Jamie, complaining about a spot on his tongue that hurt when he brushed his teeth. When it also bled, they knew it wasn’t something that would go away on its own. But what no one in the medical community — local or national — expected was a diagnosis of synovial sarcoma: It’s a rare form of cancer, infamous for developing in professional athletes who have chewed tobacco.

“He’s the youngest ever (to have been diagnosed),” recounted his father. “The previous youngest on record was 22 years old.”

Very quickly during that February month in 2013, the Sanfords found themselves shuttling between Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Ohio State University Medical Center where Brady underwent 10 hours of surgery to remove the

right half of his tongue and replace it with tissue from his left forearm. By July he had completed six rounds of chemotherapy, but was able to avoid radiation treatment.

“In a 4-year-old,” said Mr. Sanford, “it would have destroyed his jaw bone and salivary glands.”

Today, Brady is healthy and very active, counting recess, gym and then math as his favorite subjects as a first-grader at Evening Street Elementary School in Worthington. His speech is unimpaired and he’s happy to demonstrate that his new tongue, marbled with the white of the transplanted tissue, works just fine.

He still gets check-ups every six months, but his dad said their goal is “to make it normal as much as possible. He’s got no restrictions.”

Brady enjoys playing baseball, basketball and soccer, and he recently began skating lessons at the OSU rink, hoping to get as good at skating as his favorite Blue

Jacket, Boone Jenner. He also participates in the Heroes program, the Blue Jackets Foundation’s pediatric-cancer research fundraising program. It has become the cornerstone project for the Foundation, raising more than $2 million to date in the fight against pediatric cancer, helping tough kids like Brady face whatever challenges life heaves at them.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Franklin County offers FREE classes for families, friends & caregivers struggling to cope with their loved one’s illness.

NAMI Basics is a 6-week course of education & support for parents or caregivers of a child under age 17 who has a mental illness to educate them on treatment options and how to advocate for their child within the school and medical settings.

Family-to-Family The Mentoring Program is a 12-week course for family members of an adult who has a mental illness to learn coping skills, Communication techniques and information on local resources.

The NAMI Mentoring Program matches family caregivers with helpful coaches who can help them deal with the realities and difficulties that often occur when caring for a loved one with mental illness. Free training is available for mentors and caregivers.

Ongoing monthly support groups for family members and a weekly group for adults living with mental illness are also available.

Sibling Revelry

By Joel Oliphint This “Good News, Dad News” column has been around for more than two years now, so I recently did a quick scan of these pieces to see if there are some glaring topical omissions I should include in the new year. Nothing jumped out, but I did notice a pattern. Much of what I talk about in these pages are the surprises — the unexpected twists and turns and highs and lows of parenting.

All of those eye-opening revelations can probably be folded into the biggest surprise of all, which should have been the most obvious: My kids are unique — physically, emotionally, intellectually. They are different from each other, from me, from Kate (their mom).

Sure, we overlap. Family resemblances and character traits get passed on. But there’s no template, no grid.

I grew up in a family of five, so this should not have been a shocker. But there’s something about parenting multiple children in the same environment with the same values and getting wildly different results that still blows my mind. I find myself constantly analyzing those differences to theorize about where they originated: Older sibling syndrome?

Younger sibling syndrome?

My tendencies handed down?

Kate’s tendencies? Classmates’ influence? TV influence? Gender differences?

Though my kids fall under the preconceived and sometimes unhelpful categories

of male/female behavior in many ways (snips and snails, sugar and spice, etc.), they also consistently upend those notions. Liam is more likely to surrender completely to his emotions and become a heap on the floor, letting it all out.

Sometimes I don’t know Maggie is upset until I look at her face and notice her blinking rapidly, fighting back tears even as her eyes begin to water.

When Liam saw Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the first time, he was up half the night. Maggie had little reaction when she saw it a few weeks later, but recently she kept asking me to come downstairs with her, pleading not to be left alone in her room. She wouldn’t say why, but finally, as I was putting her to bed one

night, I asked her if she could try to explain why all of a sudden she was scared to be alone.

“Voldemort,” she said.

Other unlearned, seemingly innate behaviors have been downright disturbing. I remember watching one of my kids, barely 2, single out another child in an indoor play area because this little boy looked different. I watched my kid stare intently from across the room, walk over to the boy, stare a second longer, then push him over. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Sometimes the surprises come in the form of non-behaviors that I had assumed were innate but actually need to be taught. To wit: Brooms should not be used to clean the dining room table; don’t come upstairs naked from your shower when guests are here; offering the downturned, limp fingers of your left hand like dead jellyfish tendrils is not the same as a handshake.

Part of me thinks I need to stop being surprised about all these behaviors and differences. Naiveté is not a parent’s friend. But this column is also a good monthly reminder that I’ll never have this parenting thing totally figured out. On my bad days, the curveballs are confounding. On my good days, I delight in the unexpected.

Your Teen “Hates” You — Now What?

By Carl Grody My buddy looked sad, angry, and bewildered all at the same time. (Yes, he had teenagers.)

“I don’t know what to do,” he said. “My oldest daughter said she hates me.”

“How old is she again?” I asked.

“Fourteen,” he gulped.

“How often does it happen?”

“At least once a week,” he said.

I patted him on the shoulder and said, “It probably means you’re doing something right.”

That might sound strange coming from a social worker who specializes in family therapy, and it’s certainly not our goal as parents to make our kids hate us. But no matter how much we hate those three little words, teens are going to say them no matter what you do. It’s just part of parenting a teenager. You do yourself a favor when you expect that it’s going to happen occasionally.

So why does it happen? Ironically, it’s often your teen’s way of making sure that you still care about them.

Teenagers’ developmental job is to start creating themselves separate from their parents (which explains sooooo much of what they do). But teens also know they’re still kids at heart, and they crave rules, boundaries and expectations from parents.

Teens see those as proof that you still love them, even though they’d eat fire ants before admitting it to you. So when they hit you with the “H word,” it’s often a test to see if you still care enough about them to make them do the right thing.

The best way to respond is not to let it get to you. Easier said than done, I know, but your teen doesn’t really hate you. If you react when they say it, they discover a button they can push to get your attention, which encourages more of the behavior. My response when my kids said that to me was simply, “I love you anyway. Now I’m going in the other room to give you some space to calm down.” And then I’d do exactly that. Avoid getting locked in a power struggle just because your feelings were hurt.

Remember that the attention principle is always involved with parenting.

Simply put, attention increases behavior. Ignore or minimize your reaction to a behavior that you don’t like, and that behavior should eventually go away.

Praise behaviors that you like, and those should eventually increase. So when your teen handles disappointment well, you can say something simple like, “I noticed that you handled that in a positive way. I’m proud of you.”

One more thing: sometimes, teens say, “I hate you!” just because they’re mad and lashing out. Ignore it then, too. It might make them madder in the short term, but they’ll learn that the phrase doesn’t have power over you.

Experts from Nationwide Children’s Hospital answer common questions about health and safety Q: My son has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Does this mean that he can’t have any sweets now? Will he outgrow it? How do I know how much insulin to give him?

A: Managing and monitoring diabetes are in your child’s best interest. It is very important to always consult your pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist about your child’s health.

Secondly, educate yourself and anyone involved in your child’s care in order to debunk any myths you hear about managing Manmohan diabetes. Here are some examples of common myths.

K. Kamboj, MD, Myth: Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.

Interim Chief of Fact: Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin in the Endocrinology at Nationwide body due to the destruction of insulin-producing cells in the Children’s pancreas. This is unrelated to sugar consumption. Type 2 Hospital diabetes results from the body’s inability to respond normally to insulin. Excessive sugar and carbohydrate consumption can cause weight gain, which could result in obesity and therefore an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. Children with diabetes can eat sweets in moderation as part of a balanced diet, but it is important to track sugar and carbs and adjust insulin accordingly.

Myth: Kids can outgrow diabetes.

Fact: Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong illness that requires lifelong treatment. Children with Type 1 diabetes will always need to take insulin as treatment. Because insulin-producing cells in Type 1 diabetes are destroyed, they’ll never make insulin again. However, children with Type 2 diabetes may see an improvement in their blood sugar levels with lifestyle adjustments or after puberty as a result of weight loss.

Myth: Kids with diabetes cannot exercise.

Fact: Daily activity helps kids manage their weight, improve cardiovascular health, boost their mood, relieve stress and control their blood sugar. This will all be helpful in managing your child’s diabetes.

Taking care of a child’s diabetes may be very different from managing diabetes in adults. In order to get the most accurate reading and manage your child’s diabetes effectively, parents should: Always know your child’s insulin dose. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Diabetes Calculator for Kids (nationwidechildrens.org/diabetes-calculatorfor-kids) is the first tool of its kind in pediatrics. This is a unique tool that can be used to help you calculate your child’s insulin dose in five easy steps.

Check blood sugar levels as recommended by your diabetes team. Before meals and before bedtime are some regular times to check. Management of Type 1 diabetes in kids needs to be done in collaboration with your multidisciplinary pediatric diabetes care team.

All carbs require insulin. Any time, and every time, all carbohydrate consumption needs to be paired with insulin.

make $45,300 or less, you’re likely eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit of about $5,000. Other families can claim a child care tax credit worth up to 35 percent of the cost of care, with a limit of $3,000 in expenses per child.

Some employers also offer child care flexible spending accounts, which would save you money by allowing you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for a portion of your child care bills.

If you’re a lower-income parent, Title XX financial-assistance programs are designed for families making up to 150 percent of the poverty level who need child care in order to work or go to school.

That is a gross income of about $2,485 a month for a family of four. The programs include Ohio Works First Child Care, Transitional Child Care and Publicly Funded Child Care. All are administered

The question therefore is — what can you do if you need to work and can’t afford care? It depends. There is no easy answer.

The Ohio Works First Child Care program provides child care assistance to those who are receiving Ohio Works First cash assistance and who are employed, in school or in approved education and workforce training programs.

The Transitional care program is for families who are no longer eligible for the Ohio Works First program but who need child care; the benefit lasts up to a year. The Publicly Funded Child Care program also serves families earning up to 150 percent of the poverty level. Families enrolled in these programs still pay part of the cost of child care but also receive financial assistance to cover the bulk of the bill.

If you make too much to qualify for state-funded programs, or you are experiencing only a temporary downswing in income due to job loss or a health crisis, your options are more limited.

Some preschools offer scholarships or temporary-assistance programs, but there is no central database outlining those programs. Sometimes you just have to ask. Certain nonprofits, such as the YMCA, operate child care programs and offer their own assistance programs.

Unfortunately, the rest of us have to make hard decisions to ensure our kids are taken care of while we pay the bills. If we’re lucky, we can occasionally rely on friends, family, neighbors or an after-school enrichment program to help cover the gap between school’s end and work’s end.

Diapers, formula, hospital bills.

We all expect new expenses once baby comes along. But there is one cost that might be a bit of a shock: the bill for child care. Most parents work, but profiting from that work becomes much harder once Junior arrives. The cost of child care has risen 255 percent since 1985 according to the Census Bureau, rising at more than twice the rate of inflation.

In Ohio, the average annual cost for full-time infant care was $7,889 in 2012, according to the nonprofit Child Care Aware. The cost was $6,376 per year for a 4-year-old and $4,732 for a schoolage child. These bills are for one child. The pain intensifies for families with more children.

To put those numbers in perspective, the average annual public college in-state tuition in Ohio in 2012 was $8,904. According to LendingTree, the average 2012 monthly mortgage payment adds up to $9,504 per year.

Friends of ours who work for an airline have had to split their work shifts so that someone is always home with their daughter. It has reduced the child care bill, but it isn’t great for their relationship: They see each other only a few hours each week. Others, myself included, have gone from full-time to part-time work to keep the child care bill for two young children in check. Still others rely on family, but extended families often

live far apart, and grandma might still be working on her own career.

The tax code offers some minimal relief for child care bills, so make sure you’re taking advantage of those tax credits. If you’re married with two children and

hen children go to day care or preschool, they are going to get sick.

“Parents should recognize the fact that young children are going to come in contact with viruses when they get in with each other,” said Dr. Robert Murray, president-elect of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Be aware — you are now, essentially, sharing viruses and bacteria with all the children in that child care center.”

Still, there are precautions that centers and parents can take to keep children healthy, he said. When evaluating centers, parents should ask questions about what policies are in place to minimize the spread of illness. Murray said a prime indicator of whether a center is focused on good health practices is its policy on hand washing.

“It’s still the single most important thing people can do,” he said.

That’s why Christ Lutheran Children’s Center requires that children wash their hands as soon as they arrive in the morning, said center director Renee Cloyd.

“It’s just a good routine,” said Cloyd, whose center is located in Bexley and serves children between the ages of 2 and up through 5 years old.

CLEANLINESS COUNTS Centers should have policies that address serving food, diapering babies and sanitizing toys.

When touring a facility, check out the “orderliness of the place,” Murray said. “Are things clearly separated? Is the food kept separate from the diaper changing area? Is that area separate from the play area?”

A good center is one that is “doing its best to optimize cleanliness and safety,” he said.

The center also should have policies about washing toys and sanitizing things children put in their mouths, added Dr. Katalin Koranyi, a professor of clinical pediatrics at Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

ADDRESSING SICKNESS

SIZE MATTERS

How a center treats sick staff members is another indicator of its efforts to promote good health, Koranyi said. She recommends asking how many sick days workers receive and whether they are encouraged to use them.

A center also should have procedures for handling children who become sick during the day, she said.

Ideally, the center should have a place where the child can be isolated from the other children but still be supervised.

Christ Lutheran Children’s Center in Bexley has such a spot. Staff are trained to watch for signs of illness, Cloyd said. Parents will be called to pick up their son or daughter if the child has a fever or vomits or has diarrhea.

She sometimes calls parents to alert them that their child is acting sick but doesn’t have a fever. That way they can keep an eye on them in the evening or be more prepared if the child becomes ill, Cloyd said.

“We like to give them a heads-up,” she said.

The number of children and the range of ages in a classroom also can make a difference, Koranyi said.

Fewer children in the room means fewer opportunities for illness to spread, she said, and it’s also helpful to separate kids by age. Older children can carry a virus without exhibiting symptoms and unknowingly expose little ones.

PARENTS CAN HELP Parents also can play a role in keeping children healthy, Murray said.

“Sleep is a critical thing,” he said. Children who aren’t well rested may be more prone to getting ill. He also recommends having children wash their hands before leaving day care to help prevent them from bringing germs home.

It’s also important that parents keep sick children home. Sending an ill child to day care puts all the other children at risk.

“Parents collectively need to be vigilant for each other,” he said.

amilies heading to the Lincoln Theatre or Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens need to leave room in their itineraries to visit some of the other attractions in the area.

The King-Lincoln District is enjoying an exciting revitalization spearheaded, in part, by $13.5 million in renovations at the Lincoln, which originally opened in 1928. The nearby Olde Towne East neighborhood also has a number of newer businesses that will appeal to families.

Restoration efforts at the Lincoln have helped shine a light on the area’s rich arts history. The area was well known for its jazz scene from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Since reopening in 2009, the theater has concentrated on bringing jazz back to the neighborhood, but is also home to a number of other arts organizations’ productions, including Columbus Children’s Theatre and the Thiossane West African Dance Institute.

Children can experience the music firsthand through the PBJ & Jazz concert series, said Suzan Bradford, general manager of the theater.

“Local jazz artists come to do jazz

with families and kids,” from November to March, she said.

The hourlong concerts are interactive and designed to introduce youngsters to the instruments and the music they make. In the warmer months, the concerts move to the Topiary Park in nearby downtown Columbus.

The Lincoln offers more than jazz. Performances range from choral groups to author appearances to plays.

It even boasts its own barbershop with the E’Voluer Barber Studio. Located next door is the dancewear boutique for the Leap of Faith Dance school, which also has its original dance studio nearby. Columbus Parent readers voted them Columbus’ Best Dance Studio in 2014.

Another important venue in the area is the King Arts Complex, which includes classrooms, theater space and museumlike interactive displays.

“We are very, very kid friendly,” said Mark Cardwell, assistant executive director. “We see kids as part and parcel of the programming we have.”

The arts facility, which focuses on building tolerance and remembering the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., offers classes, camps and special events geared to children, Cardwell said.

Visitors to the complex also can learn about Columbus folk artist

Elijah Pierce. The wood carver, who gained international attention for his art, worked at a barber shop on Long Street.

Long Street continues to play a vital role in the neighborhood, said Annie Ross-Womack, CEO of the Long Street Businessmen’s Association.

“It’s ever evolving,” she said.

Last year, city and state officials reopened the Long Street Bridge, which links the King-Lincoln District to the Discovery District. The focal point of the bridge, which includes a pedestrian walkway, is a cultural wall created by two local artists, Kojo Kamau and Larry Winston Collins. The wall uses photography and block prints to tell the history of the neighborhood.

Families will find plenty of appealing places to explore, Ross-Womack said. She recommends visiting the Homeport Gallery, which regularly exhibits artwork in a variety of mediums.

The gallery is “extremely” kid-friendly, said director Mike Fields.

“I’m usually in there drawing or painting, and they can see what artists do,” he said.

Battiste LaFleur Galleria, a familyowned flower shop, also is fun to visit.

“They make art with flowers,” Fields said.

The area is home to interesting eat-

eries. Zanzibar Brews serves a Sunday brunch and often has live music. For a more casual meal, try Los Potosinos.

The food truck is known for its grilled chicken and tamales.

Across Broad Street in Olde Towne East, there are several good dining options for families. Yellow Brick Pizza has exotic pizza toppings, an extensive beer list and the welcoming feel of a bustling neighborhood bar. The Angry Baker offers breakfast, baked goods and lunch made with local ingredients.

L’appât Patisserie & Café serves a wide array of dishes with an international flair. Owner Didier Alapini welcomes children in his cozy restaurant, said Laura Rosenthal, who regularly visits with her two boys, Linus, 3, and David, 1.

Rosenthal, who has lived in Olde Towne for seven years, has enjoyed rediscovering the neighborhood with her children. They have spent many happy hours at the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Driving Park branch, Franklin Park Conservatory and English Park, which features a newly renovated play space. The park and a newly formed moms’ group in Olde Towne have helped the family make new friends, she said.

“It’s a great community environment,” she said. “It’s very eclectic.”

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Organizers of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at the King Arts Complex want the families who attend to gain a better understanding of the civil rights movement.

The Jan. 19 day focuses not only on King but the history surrounding him, said Mark Cardwell, assistant executive director of the complex.

“If you don’t understand your history, you may be doomed to repeat,” he said. “Here at the King Arts Complex, we recognize the legacy of those that have gone before us.”

The day is intended to be “a celebration of where we came from” as well as “where we are going,” added Gale Gray, community relations coordinator for the city of Columbus. City officials see the day as an opportunity to promote cultural diversity, she said.

Many of the activities are familyfriendly, Cardwell said. Children can make crafts, work on a community art project, enjoy dance and choir performances, listen to poetry and watch videos.

The 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Day March will begin at the complex and end at the Lincoln Theatre, where social activist Julian Bond will give the keynote speech. The city will organize people along the route to hold signs bearing messages about civil rights to help set the mood, Gray said. The

march will go past the cultural wall on Long Street, which also will create a sense of history, she added.

That’s why she tries to be as flexible as possible with the party hosts who rent the Moxie’s party room attached to her Clintonville candy and gift shop. She will just rent the space or she will plan the entire party, including food, decorations and goody bags. The venue is available for everything from kids’ parties to bridal showers.

“Every time we think we should make a rule, we try to think of reasons not to,” said Rodgers. “We want to be flexible and affordable for our hostesses.”

WHAT: Moxie’s Gifts, Candy and Party Room is a centrally located venue offering custom party themes. Rodgers will work with hosts and children to develop a party around any idea. “If your child wants a garden Bubble Guppies tea, kittens in space or a dinosaur construction theme party, we will do it,” she said.

regg Dube grew up in Connecticut, a die-hard fan of the Hartford Whalers. The National Hockey League franchise morphed into the Carolina Hurricanes when they moved to North Carolina in 1997, but Dube eventually found a new team — the Columbus Blue Jackets — to cheer for when he and his family moved to Columbus in 2011.

“We bought season tickets as soon as we moved here,” Dube said. He wanted his children, 7-year-old Ryan and Emma, now 5, to experience ice hockey the way he had as a child. And that now includes going on the occasional family road trip to follow the team.

The Dube family, including mom Sue Ellen, travelled to Nashville this past March and will head to St. Louis this March. While stories of opposing fans getting harassed at football and baseball games aren’t unusual to hear, Dube said taking kids to an opponent’s home ice hasn’t been a problem.

“Maybe back east, but out here, the fans won’t hassle you,” Dube said. “You also don’t have the tailgating going on.”

A key piece of the family’s travel planning has been to tap into the resources offered by the Jacket Backers, the officially recognized fan club for the Blue Jackets. The nonprofit group, founded soon after the CBJ franchise was created in 2000, welcomes anyone to participate in their events, whether they’re duespaying members or not.

The Jacket Backers often host game-watching parties at local restaurants when the Jackets’ away games are televised, and occasionally they put together travel packages for away games. While anyone under the age of 21 can’t ride the Jacket Backers’ bus, families can take advantage of group pricing on hotels and buy game tickets, also at a group-discount rate, said Julie Maurer, the club’s president.

“Families are really welcome with us,” Maurer said.

Sitting in what Dube calls the “microcosm” of Jackets-friendly territory is part of the experience, he said, explaining that “being in a section with other Blue Jackets fans is really fun.”

Maurer added, “You definitely feel safety in numbers, but truthfully, there haven’t been problems. If you hear people using foul language, usually all you have to do is remind them there are kids present. And we have had quite a few families with us.”

Another tip Dube offers: Get to the arena early so you can find a place to have dinner and take pictures. “(The arena in) Nashville, for example, doesn’t feel as easy to get to (as Nationwide Arena),” Dube said. “There’s a lot of foot and car traffic in that area.

Hockey is not the only thing going on there.”

An added bonus for going on CBJ road trips is that many of the drive-able destinations offer opportunities for extra family fun.

“We ended up staying in the Opryland hotel in Nashville, so we spend a lot of time checking out all the sights around there and then outside the arena as well,” Dube said. “When we go to St. Louis, we’ll do the Arch and other places.”

Pack a Poncho. It will probably rain when you’re there. Stay (kind of) dry and continue on with festivities. The storm will pass.

Celebrating a birthday? An anniversary? Is it someone’s first trip to the parks? Head to Downtown Disney the day before you visit the theme parks and get a personalized button at one of the shops. Cast members will greet the button holder by name with a boisterous “Happy Birthday” or “Thanks for visiting us” throughout the trip.

Ship to Your Hotel. Put that Amazon Prime account to use, and ship necessities. Diapers, bottled water, snacks. Whatever day-to-day necessity you need, it’s overpriced in Orlando. And if you’re relying on Disney Transportation, you’ll get nowhere near a grocery store.

Your Hotel Restaurant is Overpriced. But it probably has a fridge. Over-order at Downtown Disney (Earl of Sandwich is reasonably priced) and dine on leftovers. Or order pizza. But not from room service.

FUN FOR GROWN-UPS Yes, we’re talking booze. While Magic Kingdom is dry, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are happy to pour the adults an adult beverage.

Go for the Good Stuff. While macro brews are priced high, the micro brews, such as Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA are priced close to “real world” pricing. Grab a pint at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Hollywood Studios.

Imbibe Around the World. Epcot’s World Showcase showcases more than just themed gift shops and short films.

Drink what the locals drink in each country, and don’t miss the Sake tasting in the back of Mitsukoshi Department Store, the Japanese gift shop.

Disney theme park is open for extra hours. While this seems like a good deal, avoid the parks with these days. The additional time attracts additional crowds, leaving the other three parks less than full.

Book Your Fastpass Selections Early. Every Disney guest starts the day with three Fastpass selections, which allow you to jump to the front of the line. Families staying at a Disney resort can book three attractions per day up to 60 days prior to the trip. Everyone else can do this 30 days in advance.

Download the App. The My Disney Experience App is a valuable (and free) tool. In addition to helping you find restaurants, restrooms, Anna and Elsa, it also allows users to see which rides and attractions have the longest wait at any given time.

The ones with the longest wait? Those are your Fastpass selections.

Get There Early. It’s antithetical to the idea of vacation, but sleeping in is for a different trip. Be prepared to be at the parks 30 to 60 minutes before they open. You’ll be the first ones in and will be able to visit popular attractions without a wait.

Go to the Back. When you arrive early, head straight to the back of the park and work your way to the entrance. Most people will stop at Main Street U.S.A. or Fantasyland first. Let them do the waiting.

Shop Elsewhere. Downtown Disney and the airport have nearly every souvenir you can find inside the parks and are less crowded.

ver since my first boyfriend dumped me at Disney World — you know, the happiest place on earth — I’ve had mixed feelings about the place. It truly is magical. The cast members can make even the most skeptical woman a little giddy just with the offering of a sticker. It’s clean (Disney legend has it you’re never more than 20 paces from a trash can).
