ant to know how relevant data centers are to your life? Try getting through a day without some part of your existence being touched by the gigabytes of information stored about you and your activities in a data center somewhere in the world.

All of this became strikingly apparent to me recently as I was attempting to get from point A to point B on an airplane being held on the ground by heavy snow and ice. Data, and the ability to access it quickly, became of prime importance as my sister and I sat in Columbus, suddenly realizing our chances of getting on a cruise ship before it left the dock with another sister and our mother were diminishing.

But my phone still worked. And my phone had an airlines app and a Twitter account. I had learned in earlier dealings that airlines are especially responsive to Twitter messages, even more so than by phone. And the necessary brevity of tweets makes the conversations a bit less frustrating.

We were still sitting on the plane to nowhere while fellow passengers waited on hold, or squirmed in their seats—anxious to get back in the terminal and wait in line for gate agents— when I sent a tweet for help and was soon in touch with the airline. By the time they ushered us off the plane to continue our four-hour wait, my sister and I were rebooked to our destination and were on standby for two earlier flights, thanks in part to the data that enabled my swift communication via Twitter.

I was already looking forward to Kitty McConnell’s comprehensive story on data centers for this month’s issue.

My travel experience made me even more curious about why Columbus has become a fertile market for new data centers—and just what are they, anyway? If you have wondered, too, our cover story provides a lot of answers.

It turns out location, infrastructure, power capabilities, workforce and

lower business costs combine to make central Ohio especially attractive for the siting of data centers—as they do for many business operations.

Another theme we explore this month is how business and education increasingly combine forces to reach common goals. We share three strong examples—of higher education customizing classes for business executives, of vocational education working with manufacturers and the building trades to produce the skilled workforce they need, and of business executives lending support to train a new generation of school building principals.

BRIGHT New Leaders for Ohio Schools is an especially promising initiative of the Ohio Business Roundtable, with plenty of opportunity for Columbus business leaders to get involved.

PASSiON PlAY Devotion to his dream of serving must-have barbecue has guided Rick Malir’s operation and the steady expansion of City Barbeque.

C

ity Barbeque has 25 restaurants in four states, but company President and Co-founder Rick Malir never forgets the humble way it all started.

That’s clear as Malir affectionately taps one of the original wood tables in City Barbeque’s flagship restaurant off Henderson Road in Upper Arlington.

It’s where he and fellow barbecue aficionados Jim Budros, Mike Taylor, John Kean and Frank Pizzo launched the business 15 years ago.

“How do you like this table?”

Malir asks. “Well, John Kean actually helped me build these tables in my garage one afternoon. A new table would have cost $125, and we could build this one for $25. I think that’s great symbolism. When I interview new team members, I sit them down at these tables and say, ‘Let’s not forget where we are’ …This is where the true blood, sweat and tears were shed to get this thing going.”

Malir, a former Kansas farm boy who had been rising in the management ranks at John Deere & Co., says he was the only partner “crazy enough to quit my day job” to start the business. But boosted by the support of his wife, Bonnie, and the backing

by his other business partners, Malir has done what he set out to do—run a barbecue joint that keeps customers coming back for more.

He recently shared the City Barbeque story with Columbus CEO. How did you learn how to smoke meat?

My friends in my college fraternity (at Kansas State University) introduced me to real barbecue back in the early 1980s. I remember my first slab of ribs off their Weber smoker. I can taste it to this day. That was when I started to love real barbecue.

How did you meet the other City Barbeque founders?

I had already researched the barbecue business when I met the “Barbeque Boys” cooking team—John Kean, Jim Budros and Mike Taylor.

Frank (Pizzo) came in just a little bit later. A lot of the recipes and cooking techniques we use today are the Barbeque Boys’ techniques.

So I had a meeting with them and talked about what I wanted to do, which was to have a barbecue joint.

They said they would love to be involved... and they became the original investors and my original partners.

They’re still involved as investors.

What inspired you to leave your corporate career and launch a barbecue restaurant?

I had always been very entrepreneurial-minded and wanted to start my own company. I was fascinated by restaurants and loved serving people.

I loved barbecue, and my whole marketing plan was that there had to be 400 guys in this town who like barbecue like I do. My friends tried to talk me out of it. They thought I was crazy… (but) I just really believed in it, and my wife supported me.

Have you ever had doubts about your decision to do this?

There was a moment before we opened that I was brining chickens at 3 in the morning in my garage. It was for a catering event, and I needed the money. I was all into this thing at that

point, and I started to think, ‘What did I just do?’ The biggest thrill was when we swung these doors open and we had people coming in to buy our food.

But there were still some times that were pretty hairy. I learned a big lesson after we were in business for a year. I was cocky and thought we could do a second (restaurant) right away. It lost so much money it almost took down the company. It was a

I learned a lot of lessons from that… We had to figure out how to run our business first before we could (expand).

How has City Barbeque become what it is today?

We never started this thing with the grandiose vision that we would have multiple locations. We just wanted to serve a great, true barbecue that we could be proud of. My years with John Deere were a great model. I got to watch their dealers every day, and I would see a common theme with the successful ones and the not-so successful ones.

So we went into this with the idea that we would be relentlessly obsessed with focusing on our guests and taking care of them. We found they liked our barbecue and what we were doing…

That allowed us to build more (restaurants).

We work to pay the most we can.

Of all the employees we have, only two (make) minimum wage.

You use the term ‘our way” in how you operate City Barbeque. What does that mean?

Part of it is the way we build our team compensation programs. We work to pay the most we can. Of all the employees we have, only two (make) minimum wage, and they’re 16-year-old kids who just started with us. But I’m not altruistic about it. I just think it’s a good way to run a business. (Employees) can afford their car payments and have a better life. We have a better-running restaurant and our customers have a better experience when they come in.

We also have scholarship programs for our (workers) who are in college and for children of employees. We offered health benefits pretty much from the day we opened… And from day one we wanted to be part of the community. We give away roughly

10 percent of our profits to charity.

Our ownership hasn’t changed much over the years. We haven’t gone out and brought in a big pool of new investors. It’s pretty close to the same group of core people. We’re still running this.

It’s still our family.

What role does your wife have with the company?

She supported me the first several years because I couldn’t pay myself.

She worked in her own career (selling pharmaceuticals and biotech) until about a year ago. Now she works parttime for City Barbeque, doing a lot of community outreach and charity work.

She’s my biggest ‘balancer.’ I come to her with whacky ideas, and she gets my head back on straight.

How has City Barbeque’s trajectory of the past 15 years lined up with your dreams for what you wanted the restaurant to be?

We just wanted to have a great barbecue company… Other than that first year when I had some sleepless nights when we expanded too fast, we’ve stayed within ourselves. We’ve focused more on improving our current restaurants than on how many more we can build. Our focus is on how we make our food and service better every day.

Where do you see City Barbeque five years from now?

It probably will be bigger. We have three restaurants we are opening this year that are confirmed and probably one more yet this year. We’ve stayed at the same rate of growth since we started. It may accelerate a bit but only if we can do what we need to do in our current restaurants.

How has being based in Columbus contributed to or created challenges for the success of your business?

There haven’t been any challenges from being in Columbus. It’s a restaurant incubator-type of town and a test market. It’s been a tremendous city from that standpoint. Some of it has been luck. We happened to do our first restaurant in Upper Arlington, which has really embraced barbecue. That was a catalyst for doing more things.

Central Ohio has been great for us.

We’ve been blessed.

tRUE to thE gAME Bat maker equips big-leaguers and rec leaguers alike with good wood.

T

he industrial park headquarters for the Phoenix Bat Co. lacks the hallowed atmosphere of iconic baseball venues such as Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Boston’s Fenway Park. But what the company does there—make custom-crafted wood baseball bats—is the essence of what General Manager and Co-owner Seth Cramer calls “real baseball” that’s in tune with the history of the game.

“Our niche is creating a high quality bat,” he says. “That’s what we build our business on.”

That business has been growing.

Phoenix Bats produces about 15,000 bats a year, up from 3,200 when Cramer joined the company in 2007. The employee count has risen from two to nine during that span. They work in an expanded 3,700-square-foot building that includes the bat-making operation, offices and showroom.

Cramer, whose business background includes stints with McGraw-Hill Education, Limited Brands and several startups, says he has spent much of his time boosting Phoenix Bats’ marketing and sales efforts, including development of a national network of 40 independent sales representatives.

But the company stays true to its roots when it comes to bat-making. That’s due to the fact that Phoenix Bats founder Charley Trudeau continues to oversee bat design and be involved in other aspects of the business whose roots go back to 1996.

Back then, Trudeau was restoring houses in central Ohio and owned a small wood shop. He also played for the Ohio Village Muffins, a 19th century baseball team organized by the Ohio Historical Society.

“The Historical Society knew Charley was a really good wood craftsman,” Cramer says, “and it’s not like you’re finding 1860s baseball bats in a catalog. The Historical Society said, ‘We need some bats.’ Charley said, ‘Sure, I’m up for the task.’ It just grew from there.”

The company continues to make those vintage bats, but its main focus

is on bats used by today’s professional, amateur and youth players.

Cramer says about 20 percent of sales are to professional players, including current major leaguers Adam Eaton of the Chicago White Sox, Angel Pagan of the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankee Didi Gregorius.

“It’s an interesting market to say the least,” he says. “You sometimes forget that these are guys in their late teens or early 20s, and a lot of them are still lemmings. Even when they get to the big leagues, there is a kind of hierarchy where veterans say (to younger players), ‘Hey, what are you swinging?’

“By the same token, some of them are great to work with. We win with those guys because of service. We are going to take care of them, promote them through social media and make sure they have the right bat.”

The wood bat business is not for the faint of heart. Phoenix Bats competes with several dozen small companies as well as industry giant Hillerich & Bradsby Co. and its famed Louisville Slugger brand.

“What it truly boils down to for us is wood quality,” Cramer says. “A large company like (Hillerich & Bradsby) owns its own forest, which is a plus and minus. Obviously the costs are lower, but the inherent flaw is they only have a few select woods to choose from versus us buying logs from anywhere on the East Coast.”

Cramer says the bats, which range in price from $57 to $125, appeal to what he calls “weekend warriors” who play in wood bat leagues and remain Phoenix Bats’ core customers. They include some of the players in the Columbus Senior Men’s Baseball League and Central Ohio Men’s Adult Baseball League.

Wood bats made by Phoenix are also being used as a training tool for youth players, including in a wood bat league for kids from 5 to 8 years old in Dublin.

“I am a firm believer that younger players can learn to be better fundamental hitters by using woods bats,” says Randal Rust, founder and coach of the Dublin Bats Baseball Club. “The bats are durable and perform well, but players really need to use their body to drive the baseball with a wood bat.”

Rust says the quality of Phoenix bats is excellent, and the company is extremely supportive of his baseball program. He also gets a kick out of what he hears from grandfathers of players in the wood bat league.

“They tell me how much they like the league because it reminds them of how the game was played when they were young,” Rust says. “It’s about nostalgia for them.”

I

t’s not much to look at today, but the west end of Nationwide Boulevard in the Arena District could be quite the showpiece five years from now.

By then, the century-old Municipal Light Plant complex is expected to have been restored as an office and specialty retail site through a partnership between Connect Realty and Schiff Capital Group.

The city of Columbus’ Street Maintenance Central Outpost site will have been redeveloped as the corporate headquarters of Borror Properties and Ruscilli Construction Co. along with some additional offices and multifamily residential units. In addition the vacant area that once was the location of Jaeger Machine Co. and Union Fork & Hoe Co., and later the proposed site for Hollywood Casino Columbus, may be filled with apartments and condominiums developed by Nationwide Realty Investors Ltd. And just up the street at 400 W. Nationwide Blvd., Nationwide Realty will have redeveloped the old industrial buildings in the Buggyworks complex into 133,000 square feet of Class A office space.

“You’ll see a great mixed-use area of our city,” predicts Nationwide Realty President Brian Ellis. “There will be all new infrastructure, a mix of offices and a neighborhood dominated by a lot of great residential choices. It will be a very exciting place to live with lots of amenities and access to green spaces and a trail along the (Olentangy River).”

Scioto River toward the end of 2014, while NRI is getting closer to finalizing its plans for the Jaeger Machine/Union Fork & Hoe site. Demolition work on part of the Buggyworks site is underway, with the project expected to be completed by early 2016.

The redevelopment of West Nationwide Boulevard, plus Nationwide Realty’s plan to build an upscale condominium complex at Neil Avenue and Spring Street just west of McFerson Commons, will push the Arena District closer to completion.

Ellis also has high hopes for a site that NRI owns along Spring Street south of the office building anchored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After that, only some smaller sites will

“We can’t sustain the level of (development) activity we’ve had the last few years or that we’ll have in the next few years,” Ellis says. “But like any area of the city, the Arena District will continue to evolve and there will be opportunities to improve it.”

The recent activity that Ellis mentioned includes the completion last year of a six-story building at Neil Avenue and Nationwide Boulevard that is the new headquarters for Columbia Gas of Ohio. Columbia Gas was the latest in a long line of high-profile businesses that have moved their offices to the Arena District. They want to be part of an area that has undergone a remarkable transformation in the past 15 years during which the old Ohio Penitentiary site has been turned into a destination neighborhood of offices, restaurants, condos, apartments and entertainment venues led by Nationwide Arena and Huntington Park.

company Founder Jeni Britton Bauer got her start in the ice cream business in 1996. That played into the company’s decision to move to the Arena District, as did the building’s proximity to creative services firms such as Resource Interactive and treetree, says Jeni’s CEO John Lowe.

“We want our creatives to be around other creatives,” he says. “Good things happen when great talent bounces ideas off each other. That made the Arena District and Downtown very appealing to us.”

The district’s proximity to the Short North also helped drive the move, with Lowe saying those in the Millennial and Generation Y demographic groups want to live in cool neighborhoods and be able to walk to work.

“It’s a great recruiting tool for us,” he says. “We want to be in a place where we can compete with the best companies in the world to attract talent.”

The Arena’s District urban vibe was also one of the reasons that Schiff Capital Group decided to partner with Connect Realty on the Municipal Light Plant project, says Michael Schiff, principal of the Columbus-based real

estate and investment firm. He sees the project as a natural extension of his company’s involvement in a number of other projects in the Downtown and Short North.

“The whole urban thing has gotten hot in Columbus and nationally,” Schiff says. “People like the activity and pulse, and there is a lot of that in the Arena District.”

That didn’t happen by accident. The success of the Arena District is the result of “very careful and thoughtful planning” by Nationwide Realty and its parent company, Nationwide Insurance, says Steve Schoeny, development director for the city of Columbus.

“They’ve always taken the long view and focused on maintaining quality and their vision for that area,” he says.

“They understood probably better than anybody (about) the return of the urban environment and that we’re seeing a generational shift to a mixed-use residential and office projects. They believed they could be successful if they built a quality product in that environment.”

mazon is bringing its data to town.

The city of Dublin approved plans for the development of a data-processing center and will soon be seeking building permits, the Columbus Dispatch reported. As of early March, the e-commerce and cloud services giant had yet to confirm Dublin as one of three Columbus-area sites in the development of a $1 billion data center for subsidiary, Vadata.

The project will receive roughly $81 million in state tax incentives. Dublin

will provide a $6.8 million land parcel in its West Innovation District technology research park, plus a half-million dollars in performance incentives. In addition to the financial lures, Dublin and a second Vadata-owned site in Hilliard share the competitive advantages of Columbus’ electric and broadband infrastructure. Amazon’s will be the latest of many large commercial and corporate data facilities that have stealthily cropped up in central Ohio over the past decade.

Emerson Network Power is a leading provider of data center power, thermal management and monitoring equipment. With $6.2 billion in sales in FY 2013 and 45,000 employees in 42 manufacturing and over 255 service centers globally, nearly every major or medium-sized data center in North America deploys their systems, says Scott Barbour, executive vice president for Emerson and business leader for Emerson Network Power.

The company services data centers owned by Fortune 500 companies, cloud providers and commercial operators. “The explosion of data is causing a lot of innovation and a lot of demand for our types of products and services,”

ing firm, which has an office in Columbus. Pavlak also chairs the standards committee of TC 9.9 Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces and Electronic Equipment. The international committee of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Cooling Engineers develops standards related to the design, operation, maintenance and energy usage of data centers.

Heapy’s design services include mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire systems as well as network, rack and cable planning for data centers. The firm’s portfolio includes Cincinnati’s 911 Emergency Response data center, AT&T’s Chicago data center and AEP’s transmission operation data center.

Heapy’s large financial industry clients include non-disclosure agreements in their data center contracts.

“Any of these big hacks can disrupt the economy, so technically they’re considered terrorist threats,” says Pavlak. Telecom clients are equally as secretive about their mission-critical facilities. “They don’t want too much data out there.”

Heapy is in the process of creating a data center master plan for an unnamed international company. Heapy designs centers for a 15- to 20-year life—quadruple the lifecycle of the servers housed in their reinforced walls. “It isn’t because in three to five years the server burns out like a light bulb. It’s because they’re obsolete,” says Pavlak.

Barbour says. “If you walk down Wall Street in New York City, which is a great area for us, every one of those major firms would have some piece of Liebert equipment.”

Proximity to service and equipment suppliers is one of several factors that make the Columbus region appealing for data center operators.

SECURITY

The secrecy surrounding the data industry is a byproduct of its traffic in sensitive information. Network security, power redundancy and controlled, mirrored environments are crucial—and federally regulated

in certain industries—standards for companies that depend on computing systems. For small, medium or large businesses, a failure in data processing or storage could have direct financial costs, as well as negative repercussions on a business’s reputation. But the consequences of a failure in the critical systems of major financial, healthcare, telecom or electric providers, for example, could be catastrophic on a massive scale.

“At these higher levels, we’re not talking about hacking bank accounts.

We’re talking about actually being able to move financial markets,” says Rick Pavlak, president of Dayton-based Heapy Engineering design and consult-

Chips in servers generate more heat as they become more effective in their computing capacity. More heat means more cooling is needed to maintain optimal temperature and humidity levels in a data facility. To achieve that environment, data centers use power loads equal to those of large manufacturers.

ouring Cologix data center in north Columbus is like going behind the security barriers at an international airport. A double-doored “mantrap” keeps you from entering the warehouse-style building without security clearance. The lobby is filled with large flat-screens streaming weather feeds, cooling alarms, operating center monitors, and charts indicating the flow of bandwidth traffic to the servers on the data center floor.

A thick door, a locked cage and two bioscanners requiring a warm palm print and a 7-digit PIN code stand between the lobby and the data center floor. Key fob access is required to enter the subdivided cages on the floor. Once inside, only the center’s clients hold the keys to their private server racks. Guards monitor the facility 24/7, with closed-circuit cameras watching all activity at the 86,000-square-foot facility, including the comings and goings of clients and auditors on the 37,000-square-foot data center floor.

“Security is a huge part of what we do here,” says Kim Gerhart, general manager of Cologix in Columbus. “We have companies that locate their entire IT infrastructure here: all of their servers, all of their data. Every piece of their business is located here.”

Cologix is a carrier-neutral colocation center, meaning companies can locate their servers alongside other companies’ servers, all of which may use different Internet service providers. Cologix is the largest convergence of carriers in Ohio. Over 40 broadband providers including Time Warner, AT&T, XO, Frontier and WOW have points of presence in the Cologix meet-me-room. The closer a tenant is to a provider’s rack, the faster their data delivery, making the Cologix meet-me-room a major competitive advantage.

Cologix was originally built as a facility housing AEP’s automated outage reporting system. That robust electric infrastructure still powers the facility’s redundant—and abundant—energy load. As servers generate tremendous heat, cooling units keep the air at a steady 68 degrees. AEP delivers 12

megawatts to the data center, which has 30 megawatts in reserve for extensive growth.

The data center has the capability to provide 18 kilowatts per square foot.

“For each square foot of our data center, we can power 15 average American homes,” says Gerhart. Cologix is building an adjacent 100,000-square-foot data center, which will be online by December 2015.

The cost to power and cool servers is a large budget item for companies that maintain enterprise data centers. In-house data centers also place a huge demand on the power grid.

To improve efficiency and decrease utilization, AEP incentivizes companies to colocate in commercial data centers. Bob Evans recently moved data operations from its New Albany headquarters to Cologix.

Despite the benefits of colocation, some Fortune 500 companies still choose to build their own data centers, says Jim Hayes, president of AFCOM Central Ohio, an association for data center management professionals. In the last 24 months, Hayes says Nationwide, L Brands, Abercrombie & Fitch, Discover and Citigroup have all opened data centers in central Ohio.

“Why would they build a new data center as opposed to colocation facilities? Because Columbus has the data connectivity that they need. We have geographic security, and we’re becoming more of the Midwest hub,” says Hayes. Hayes is the chief technical officer of Metro Data Center in Dublin. The carrier-neutral facility is connected to the city’s DubLink infrastructure.

Hayes works closely with many of the region’s CIOs and CTOs. Among his peers, discussion centers on the growth of Columbus’ data center market. “We’re already discussing how that’s going to affect the technology mindset in Columbus,” says Hayes.

Data center rates may go down and the IT talent pool may grow with the rise of the industry locally, Hayes adds. “Columbus is on a pure upswing on growth inside data centers and growth of technology utilizing colocation facilities.”

a power load of three-times that per square foot, says Pavlak. Luckily for local data center operators, Columbusbased American Electric Power has more miles of extra-high-voltage transmission lines that any other electric provider in the country.

Mark James is AEP’s vice president of economic and business development. He founded AEP’s Qualified Data Center Site certification program three years ago. The program analyzes hundreds of characteristics to determine potential data center sites within AEP’s 11-state footprint from Michigan to Texas. Data facility operators James works with in commercial hubs like New York and Chicago tell him that the power ring serving Columbus is “one

of the stiffest they’ve seen anywhere.”

AEP’s system is built to service the industrial-sized power loads utilized by manufacturers. Data centers are the industrial clients of the 21st century; their high-energy usage is just denser per square foot, compressed into a smaller footprint than a large manufacturing operation.

“A lot of these data centers require redundancy. In our world, redundancy means their supply comes from two different substations. Central Ohio is very well positioned in that we have substations,” James says. “If you have a problem, you’re still maintaining service to the facility. It’s not just adequate supply: it’s highly redundant as well.”

James says more companies have

been asking about AEP’s data center capabilities. Data centers were once a coastal activity, clustered around the tech giants out west and the financial houses to the east. In recent years, “natural disaster risk (and) increasing data need—health records going to the cloud, more and more data computational need for us as individuals—created opportunity for noncoastal places to compete for large data centers,” says James.

AEP has seen growing data center demand from Columbus companies as well as large companies looking to move away from the coast. Data center development begets stronger infrastructure development and attracts broadband carriers. That in turn spurs

“The central Ohio community has been looked at by the five top-name technology companies you would think of because there’s success here.

There’s a redundant electric supply and the fiber dimension,” he adds.

FIBER & CONNECTIVITY Digital information moves over fiber optic cable networks at the speed of light. The more distance between the server processing data and the end user, the longer it takes for a broadband carrier like AT&T or Time Warner to transmit that data. For Netflix watchers, that delay in loading time is an annoyance; for financial traders and online retailers, millions can be lost in those milliseconds.

“For nonfinancial activity, (Columbus is) actually very well located to be close to where you need to be to get maximum access to the network,” says Ram Sastry, AEP’s vice president of infrastructure and business continuity.

Sastry is overseeing AEP’s migration of its customer support, distribution, transmission and generation operations from its downtown headquarters to a data center in New Albany.

“We have a good ten or 15 applications that absolutely need to be up and running for the protection of and providing service to our customers,” says Sastry. Continuing to house those mission-critical operations in a downtown high rise next to a river and a rail line was too much risk for AEP. The New Albany data center, which is built to the secondhighest standard possible in data center construction, was the first step to mitigating risk to the company’s crucial systems. The second step will be a mirrored data center, expected to come online after 2017.

Years ago AEP built a transmission operation center in New Albany and, with it, the electrical and networking infrastructure that today make the area what Sastry calls “fertile ground for data centers.”

Network connectivity is important to computing environments. New Albany has excellent Internet connectiv-

ity, says Sastry. “There’s a lot of fiber we own and there’s fiber that a lot of telecom companies own. They’ve got points-of-presence in this location. It just sort of organically happened.”

AEP partnered with the city to construct NewAlbanyNet fiber optic network, which is managed

by Bluemile, a carrier-neutral ISP. NewAlbanyNet connects directly to the Ohio Academic Resources Network, a broadband fiber-optic system funded by the Ohio Board of Regents.

K-12 schools, government agencies and hospital systems, and interfaces with commercial data centers.

OARnet also connects directly to the Internet 2 international non-profit research and academic network.

OARnet was an Internet network created in 1987 to connect the Ohio Supercomputer Center, located on the Ohio State University campus, with other research institutions across Ohio. “OARnet was the only game in town in 1987 besides something known as CompuServe,” says Pankaj Shah, executive director of OARnet and OSC. Founded in Columbus in 1969, CompuServe provided the first commercial email and network chat capabilities to the American public. Thanks to companies like

CompuServe, the Internet became ubiquitous in homes and businesses.

In answer to that increasing demand, private broadband providers began installing network infrastructure in central Ohio.

OARnet serves as a state incubator for public-private Internet technology development and commercialization. In partnership with JobsOhio, OARnet offers new employers access to Ohio’s research connections and allows private sector data centers to transfer data over OARnet’s 100-gigabit-per-second network.

“Everything is crisscrossed. Universities use private data centers, private data centers have a need to sell their services to universities, and there are backups that state government will move to private data centers,” says

Shah. Ohio has a good mesh of public-private network assets, he says.

OARnet is the nation’s broadband leader, says Shah. No other network is as densely populated, as far reaching and fast. At 100 Gbps, you could transfer 80 million file cabinets of data daily, simultaneously download e-books for Ohio’s 1.8 million school children in two minutes, or transmit 8.5 million electronic medical records in 60 seconds. Smartphone data on OARnet can be sent 50,000 times faster than average mobile data.

“When you sell Ohio outside to the private sector, to bring industry into Ohio, to attract them, these assets are helpful,” says Shah.

A few years ago, Shah says, there was a data center shortage in the state. Today, the data center market in Ohio has grown tremendously.

Per capita, Ohio leads the nation in fiber optic broadband. Central Ohio, in particular, has an added infrastructure benefit. Columbus FiberNet is an underground fiber conduit system that circles the city of Columbus.

FiberNet allows broadband providers to lay fiber optic cable without the expense of installing ductwork in the public right of way.

It’s a feature that has increased competition in the Columbus carrier market. Columbus FiberNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fishel Company. The city of Columbus uses the duct system for its network between buildings, traffic signals and other municipal facilities.

Columbus FiberNet becomes DubLink in north Columbus. Bill Verhoff is operations manager for both conduits. Access to providers or access to fiber at a lower rate because of a cable-ready infrastructure is a huge draw for large enterprises and data centers, Verhoff says.

“Our route was strategically built to pass by the major data centers and the major business parks,” says Verhoff. During his three years in the position, he’s seen the Columbus data market grow stronger.

“I think of it as a great economic development tool, because data on a daily basis continues to be more and more important,” says Verhoff. “Being close to that data and having an infrastructure to handle all the data that’s needed on a day-to-day basis is important.”

Business Lessons R The Ohio Business Roundtable teams up with OSU’s Fisher College of Business to create a new generation of school principals trained as turnaround agents for highpoverty schools.

ichard Stoff has been searching for solutions to reform public education for years, and the best prospect yet is a bright idea his organization, the Ohio Business Roundtable, is preparing to launch to create next-generation school principals.

“Nobody is doing this anywhere in the country,” says Stoff, president and CEO of the BRT. Fueled by $3.5 million in state funding, BRIGHT New Leaders for Ohio Schools is reviewing applicants for an intensive training and education fellowship that will produce 30 to 40 business-trained principals for highpoverty urban schools across Ohio.

BRIGHT fellows will begin working side-by-side this summer with accomplished school principals while simultaneously studying leadership at the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. With successful completion of the fellowship, they will have a tuition-free MBA, be fast-track licensed as Ohio school principals and placed in schools that need strong leaders.

“This is not only worth doing, but we have to do it,” Stoff says.

The concept for BRIGHT stems from a study BRT commissioned in 2012 with OSU and the Ohio Department of Education and revealed in a report, “Failure Is Not an Option.” The study looked at nine “unexpectedly highperforming” Ohio public schools where poverty rates of more than 50 percent might have predicted poor school outcomes. Instead, the schools produced above-average results that in each case were traced back to exceptional leaders.

The results confirmed in an education setting what business executives have long known: good leadership is key to producing results, and good

leadership is transferable.

BRIGHT now is seeking to create a new generation of school principals who will commit to serving at least two years in high-poverty urban Ohio schools. The pilot project will test the premise that giving business leadership training to individuals with a passion for serving children can result in growing more unexpectedly high-performing schools.

In addition to seeking better-performing schools, Stoff says the business leaders he represents are also concerned about a supply issue in the state’s public schools. As educators take early retirement made available by pension reforms, schools are losing “way too many” good building principals, he says.

Five sectors are being mined to produce prospects for the BRIGHT fellows: education, business, nonprofits/philanthropy, military and government.

In one recruiting move, Stoff reached out recently to leaders of professional services firms across the state. He encouraged them in an email to share the fellowship application with associates who are high-performers but are restless in their current work and looking for an opportunity to give back.

The ideal candidate is “somebody who’s demonstrated they’ve closed achievement gaps,” Stoff says. He likens the work to the Peace Corps—“the toughest job you’ll ever love”—and says it is more of a calling than a career choice.

“Being a great classroom teacher doesn’t assure success of being a great leader; there is a little different DNA and skill set,” he says. Those without an education background will be bootstrapped during the fellowship to enable them to effectively lead classroom teachers.

Corporate executives who are members of the BRT have been vocal in their call for higher-performing schools to help meet their needs for a skilled and educated workforce. BRIGHT will give business leaders in Columbus and other urban areas the opportunity to help support the initiative financially and by being mentors to the fellows.

“Business needs to have skin in the game on this,” Stoff says. As the class of fellows is formed and individual members are assigned to work with proven performers in schools in Columbus and other Ohio metros, busi-

ness leaders will also be lined up to provide financial support and professional development guidance.

The state grant supports the fellows’ education from the Fisher College along with a three-day stay each month at the Blackwell Inn and Pfahl Conference Center on the OSU campus, but Stoff will be asking businesses across Ohio to contribute nearly $1 million to provide monthly stipends of $2,500 for fellows as well as helping to mentor fellows in their communities.

Working with Stoff as co-creator of the BRIGHT initiative is Tony Rucci, clinical professor of management at the Fisher College.

A national search conducted by Chicago executive search firm Heidrick and Struggles landed Thomas G. Maridada II to lead the program forward. Starting as BRIGHT president in March, Maridada “has done every job there is in education in some goodsized districts,” Stoff says.

Maridada comes to BRIGHT from a position as national director of education policy, practice and strategic initiatives for the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington D.C. He worked previously in Michigan schools and was named “Michigan Superintendent of the Year” by the National Association of School Administrators.

A new recruit to the BRIGHT board is Mark Real, president of KidsOhio.

Good adds, “On-the-job training, coupled with the philosophical and theoretical preparation, presents our best opportunity to redefine how Instructional Leaders are developed. I anticipate successful ‘graduates’ of the program that comprise a cohort of new leaders for Ohio’s schools.”

Ohio BRT member John McEwan, managing partner of the Columbus office of Deloitte & Touche, is an enthusiastic BRIGHT proponent whose own company has a similar national initiative to create what it calls Courageous Principals. Piloted in Columbus with help from Battelle for Kids, Deloitte’s “From Insight to Action” exposes principals across the country to Deloitte’s leadership development curriculum with a focus on relationship-building, communication and influence. The idea of Deloitte’s program is that connecting school principals with leaders in business, government and nonprofits will help them lead better and share leadership lessons with teachers, “creating a ripple of leadership into the community,” according to a website description.

In his recent email to business leaders, Stoff tells them, “In all the years the BRT has been trying to reform education, we have concluded that the singularly most important factor, certainly the most leverageable, on whether kids move forward or not, is the quality of the building leadership.”

In an interview, Stoff summarizes BRIGHT succinctly, “This is about as right a thing as we’ve ever done.”

Area universities craft courses to meet changing needs of business executives and managers.

partnership between Nationwide Insurance and Otterbein University highlights a common direction higher education and industry are taking to address workforce needs.

It began when an Otterbein advisory board member suggested a non-traditional approach to fill an industry need.

“He said people don’t always need an MBA, but they do need particular skills,” says Eric Lloyd, the university’s MBA director, “and a need for speed.”

The two are collaborating on a non-credit course that exposes IT professionals to a new way of approaching software development and testing, which are skills in demand by employers in fields such as financial services.

The six-month weekly class got underway in February and students are immersed in a software development learning method called Agile in which they collaborate in eclectic and continuous exploration versus confinement to rote processes.

These development teams can be likened to how basketball coaches approach a game. They might have their teams play a zone defense to begin the contest, but through their on-court observations are flexible enough to adjust their approach as the facts dictate.

A complementary course designed

by Otterbein and taught by its instructors focuses on predictive modeling, which in the insurance world means managing risk and measuring the risk and purchasing behavior of consumers using deep analytics. It began in earnest at the start of the 21st century and is now integrating throughout the insurance domain.

employees, and interest has been expressed by most of the major insurance companies in Columbus, although the course is open to anyone, Lloyd says. “[For Nationwide,] it gives them a leg up on the competition. What it came down to was they have a need, and we have the expertise in those topics,” says Lloyd, adding that Otterbein faculty in actuarial sciences, marketing and psychology are among those who teach the course.

The insurance industry is a good jumping off point for why higher education institutions such as Otterbein are dipping their toes into more defined collaborations with partners like Nationwide.

Like many sectors of the economy that are worried about a future labor shortage, the insurance industry is faced with a graying talent pool and a number of jobs that will need to be filled. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the number of available jobs nationally for claims adjusters, actuaries, underwriters and sales agents will increase by 63,000 by 2022 compared with 2012 figures.

Accentuating the demographic

realities, complementary workforce strategies from the Columbus Foundation and JPMorgan Chase highlight the talent gap businesses are facing in central Ohio. To wit: There are 30,000 youths between 16 and 24 who are not working and not attending school; and there are another 145,000 people without a high-school diploma or the skills to find a job in the region’s most promising business sectors.

How central Ohio higher-ed schools are helping to fill those gaps varies.

Ohio Dominican University, for instance, provides a niche course aimed at project management.

Aptly called Project Management Boot Camp, the nine-week, weekly course, prepares participants to take and pass the Project Management Professional Exam or Certified Associate in Project Management exams.

And those are big deals, says Ohio Dominican instructor Adam Frumkin, who is also a director with Quick Solutions, an information technology consulting company based in Westerville.

Having either of those designations can increase the salary of someone al-

ready working as a project manager by $10,000 to $20,000 Frumkin says.

“A lot of companies need project managers, but there is not a formal education process for project management. Adding a certificate illustrates that not only are people good at their craft, but that they manage it well,” he says.

Karen Gray, the school’s executive director of adult education, says companies might request ODU to embed into curriculums facets that align with their particular industry. It’s somewhat of a new phenomenon, she says, driven partly by an expected decline in the number of traditional students over the coming years.

“One major contributing factor is that the number of non-credit students has doubled in the past 12 years,” Gray says. “The strategy is pretty straightforward: We look at employment trends and new technologies and identify the gaps in the market when it comes to education. We then use that information to feed the development of noncredit or certificate courses.”

Partnerships between industry and education have a long history, but as Jennifer Day-Haeger notes, the needs of companies and employees are becoming more complicated.

“The workforce needs accessibility to high quality education with measurable results, says the executive director of Franklin University’s Center for Professional Training and Development.

“Companies no longer have the luxury of hiring for degree only. They want to see proof; they want to see a person’s skills.”

The center takes a comprehensive approach in enhancing the skills of executives, managers and line employees, and those of entire organizations. Training ranges from developing certificate test preparation for jobs in the medical fields to creating online marketing schools for businesses that are accompanied with tools to measure results.

universities and colleges in Ohio, the U.S. and overseas. The Ohio Supreme Court, for instance, had the center create an online training program for its parole officers. Day-Haeger says they were given a bag of videos and translated and developed that into an online training product.

Among the MBAs and undergrad degrees, the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University also customizes training for corporate executives within its Executive Education offerings.

Its client list reads like a Who’s Who of regional powerhouse companies.

Interim director of the department Martin Schwalbe says the advanced training is mined down to the specific needs of a company; each with its own nuances. The goal of training is helping companies grow—period.

“The reality is when business grows, society grows,” he says.

Part of the equation those providing education and training to business must contend with is the quickness in which companies make decisions. It is, as ODU’s Gray says, much faster than in the academic world.

tal says that the dynamic is understood in their approach when training corporations to use social media platforms in ways that will resonate with their audiences.

“When we first started our firm, we offered three-day, intensive social media workshops called FastForward Camps,” co-founder Debra Jasper says.

“But we’ve since shifted much of that technical training into 15-minute, online courses that you can watch on your phone or tablet. Why? Because people want to take courses that are fast, fun and always available, anytime 24-7.”

The training industry, she says, is “ripe for disruption” and must shed boring webinars or on-site sessions where the training entails the instructor reading PowerPoint slides to the audience.

“Today’s digital audience is more sophisticated. At home, we’re playing interactive games, watching actionpacked movies packed with mindblowing special effects. Why can’t training be like that?”

Manufacturers and contractors collaborate with vocational schools to draw high school students into a surplus of tech-heavy jobs with promising career paths.

E

ric Phillips knows how valuable manufacturing and construction jobs are to a community’s success.

As executive director of the Union County Economic Development Partnership, Phillips sees firsthand how his county’s 1,600-plus manufacturing companies impact the local economy.

Manufacturing jobs pay well and create other jobs. It’s estimated that 100 manufacturing jobs generate 57 additional support jobs.

He also can imagine how devastating it would be if companies were unable to fill the county’s nearly 44,000 manufacturing jobs as older workers retire. More than 50 percent of the industry’s existing workforce in Union County will likely retire in the next 10 years, Phillips and area manufacturers estimate.

“There’s a lot of conversation about workforce development—making sure we have the workforce for tomorrow,” he says. “It’s a critical issue to us.”

He and other local leaders have begun to look to area technical schools as potential partners. The high schools, which have a long tradition of graduating students who are seeking to enter the workforce, are eager to assist.

But first, the partners must address some of the challenges career and tech schools face, say those who are working to build relationships between industry and education. The schools need clear directives about what skills businesses want, access to the equipment that manufacturers use, internship opportunities for their students and help attracting students with the right aptitude for the work. Everyone also agrees that something needs to be done about the stigma that has long been associated with vocational education. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our career centers are poised to really help out,â&#x20AC;? Phillips says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not there yet.â&#x20AC;?

according to a 2013 survey organized by the Manufacturing Leadership Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Governors, an organization comprised of senior executives and industry experts at leading manufacturing, academic and research organizations around the world. Workforce shortages are â&#x20AC;&#x153;the biggest issue facing manufacturers today,â&#x20AC;? says Eric Burkland, president of the Ohio Manufacturersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association.

Half of Ohio companies reported having a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hard timeâ&#x20AC;? filling professional and craft worker positions in a survey by the Associated General Contractors of America released in January. The skills needed range from engineering and operating equipment to developing software for robotics in manufacturing and welding, Ashley and Burkland say.

A BUSINESSES PROBLEM Manufacturers need to play a role in helping fill the workforce shortage, Burkland says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This problem is the manufacturersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; problem. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the ones that need to solve the problem,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Building connections with educators is a good start, Burkland says. Businesses need to view career schools as their potential partners and help them improve the level of training offered, he adds. Career centers are very receptive to input from business, says Chuck Speelman, superintendent at Tri-Rivers Career Center in Marion. The schools also have the flexibility to develop classes or add certification programs to meet the needs of local employers, he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We understand what it means to move at the speed of business,â&#x20AC;? Speelman says.

Instead of donating obsolete equipment to career centers for a tax writeoff, businesses need to help them purchase the latest machinery and assist with creating curriculum around how to run it, he adds. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening at Tri-Rivers. In partnership with Marion Technical School and The Ohio State University at Marion, Tri-Rivers has created the Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative. The RAMTEC facility offers high school students and adults seeking job training opportunities to learn advanced manufacturing practices, including working with industrial robots.

The lab is so well-equipped several area manufacturers, including the local Whirlpool plant, have been sending employees there for certifications and advanced training. Eight more labs are in the works. They are being funded with a state grant totaling almost $15 million.

Mitsubishi Electric, which specializes in helping plants automate their assembly lines, provided equipment at a hefty discount to Tri-Rivers. The company constantly hears customers lamenting about the lack of skilled workers, says Ted Hemmelgarn, a dis-

tribution sales manager based in Cincinnati. Company leaders saw value in putting its equipment in the hands of students who could later go to work for its customers, he says.

“Now’s a good time to be proactive,” he says.

Companies also can help by providing opportunities for students to work in their buildings and gain on-the-job experience, adds Kim Wilson, superintendent at Tolles Career & Technical Center in Plain City. When local authorities granted Autotool a tax abatement, company leaders asked to meet with Tolles officials to see if they could support the school in other ways. The company, which has hired several Tolles welding students, now offers internship opportunities.

“For us, even when we lose that potential revenue due to abatements, we still see benefits,” Wilson says. “It creates a stronger business community.

In the case of Autotool, we were able to develop a strong partnership that has led to internship and employment opportunities for our students. Those relationships have economic benefits for us, our students and the business.”

FILLING CLASSROOMS Businesses aren’t the only ones that need to become more open to the potential of career centers. Students and their parents also need to see the value of a technical education, local leaders and educators say. Many families don’t realize that today’s career tech students need high-level math, science and problem-solving skills, Speelman says. Career tech is no longer an easy alternative to earning a high school diploma, he adds.

“We are not just training for blue collar jobs but also what I call the new ‘gray collar’ jobs,” he says. “They’re not white collar jobs, but they’re high tech and high pay.”

Businesses are working to make middle and high school students more aware of quality job opportunities that begin at career tech schools. Members of the commercial construction industry recently launched www. buildohio.org to promote the industry as a potential career. The website is designed to educate students and their parents about various constructionrelated jobs and the paths to train for

them, says Chris Runyan, president of the Ohio Construction Association.

The site touts the number and variety of jobs available in construction and that the average annual salary is $52,000.

“We’re getting up to speed on how to reach out and touch the younger generation and promote construction careers,” he says.

The exciting thing about many of these careers is that young people can get on-the-job training while in high school and then pursue specialty certifications, an associate’s degree or a four-year college degree to enhance their skills, he adds. “It is definitely not the end of their professional training.”

Convincing students and their parents that college is not the only path to career success is a challenge, adds Jill Harris, manager of human resources at Corna Kokosing. The Westerville construction company has its own apprenticeship program. She’s encouraged by efforts at career schools to align their programs.

Seventh annual rating features new tool for identifying central Ohio’s premier lawyers and their practice specialties.

By MikE MahOnEy Interventional radiologists have emerged from X-ray labs into operating rooms, using minimally invasive techniques to treat hard-to-reach parts of the body and turning a low-profile specialty into a burgeoning surgical field with its own clinical and outpatient services. In the process, they’re reducing costs, shortening recovery times and easing pain.

“Interventional radiology is perhaps the most interesting medical field that a lot of folks haven’t heard about,” says Dr. James Spain, chief of interventional radiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

“We invented minimally invasive.

We rarely make an incision over a quarter of an inch—just a nick in the skin—and we put a Band-Aid on at the end.”

“If you think of the human body as a complex geography of tissue, blood vessels, neurons and bones, the equipment of today’s interventional radiologists acts like the body’s GPS system,” says Dr. Brad Mullin, director of neurosurgery at Mt. Carmel East Hospital and adjunct assistant professor of neurosurgery at Ohio State.

Interventional radiology specialists are opening outpatient clinics to see patients and provide radiation, chemo, burn and cryo therapies. “Our direct interaction and treatment of patients has evolved quickly,” said Dr. John Lippert, an interventional radiology and vascular specialist at Riverside Radiology and Intervention-

This transformation follows the development of ever-smaller probes, catheters and instruments, with a breakthrough in reducing probe size in 2011. “We had been freezing tumors since the ‘60s, but the probe was as big as my finger. Now the technology means probes just a little bigger than an IV needle,” Lippert says.

Significant dividends have been realized. The field has expanded the range of minimally invasive surgery now available, minimizing risks of

infection from open surgery and limiting damage to healthy tissues surrounding a tumor, blockage or fragmented bone.

That means many interventional radiology procedures are available on an outpatient basis and typically don’t involve general anesthesia. Those factors hasten recovery time, helping patients return to work and home. It yields productivity benefits for employers and savings for the healthcare system.

“We’re talking about recovery times that in some cases are down to

Again, the key instruments include small catheters guided by radiologists. + Cryoablation kills cancer cells by freezing them. today’s smaller catheters

avoid frostbite complications as the cryo probe enters the surface of the skin. + Radiofrequency Ablation uses RF energy to kill malignant or malfunctioning cells. + In vertebroplasty/osteoplasty, surgeons use imageguided catheters to deliver medical-grade bone cement to reinforce deteriorated or damaged spinal tissue and discs. + Angiography employs a catheter to enter the blood vessel and inject dye to make arteries or veins visible by X-ray.

For cancer patients, miniature probes and catheters deliver radiation or chemotherapy, or alternatively provide precision burning or freezing of tumors to destroy malignant cells, avoiding nearby muscles, blood vessels and nerves. Specialists recently introduced TARE (trans-arterial radioembolization) via TheraSphere, a branded process of delivering microscopic glass particles filled with yttrium-90 directly to liver tumors, Spain says.

“In many cancers, particularly renal carcinoma where the kidney can get very large, there would be substantial blood loss if they take the kidney out, but not so much if we embolize it,” says Spain. “So we release things into the artery feeding the kidney to cause it to be blocked. It could be a coil or small particles, each smaller than a grain of sand, and ultimately they stop the flow of blood to the capillaries.”

ration procedures, Mullin now uses a fully portable BodyTom CT scanner in the operating room at Mt. Carmel East, the only one in central Ohio to do so.

The BodyTom feeds real-time information to a new spine mask by Stryker— another first—that displays detailed LED images of the spine, surrounding tissue and surgical instruments.

Pairing the devices in the operating room eliminates inaccuracies as patients change position from X-ray table to the OR. “It’s like the difference between television and high-definition television,” Mullin says.

In the future, new techniques will deliver microwave therapy by catheter, as well as minimally invasive techniques to treat benign prostate tumors while preserving sexual response, Spain says.

And interventional radiologists hope to guide connections between the brain and artificial limbs. “You need to do that minimally invasively, with computer technology and scans that are four generations from what we have today,” Mullin says.
