Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

O

rthodontics is a specialty of dentistry dealing with diagnosis and correction of malaligned teeth and irregular bite relationships which can cause three general types of problems for the patient:

1. Psychosocial Problems – Discrimination due to facial appearance Improvement of esthetics is often a top priority for many patients seeking treatment. Social responses conditioned by the appearance of the face and teeth can severely affect an individual’s self-esteem as well as his or her quality of life. For example, facial appearance has been proven to make a difference in teachers’ expectations and therefore students’ progress in school, in employability in the work force, and in competition for a mate.

2. Oral Function

Improper bites can affect oral function including difficulties in jaw movement such as muscle pain, jaw joint dysfunction (TMD), and problems with chewing, swallowing or speech. Most patients with bite issues find ways to adapt or compensate, making oral function more difficult and requiring extra effort, but not impossible.

3. Injury & Dental Disease

Patients with protruding front teeth are more likely to experience trauma to their teeth such as enamel chips or fractures. Deep bites can cause significant tissue damage leading to early loss of teeth and can result in severe tooth wear leading to esthetic and sensitivity issues. Teeth that are not overlapping properly can result in excessive force placed on the teeth which can lead to gum recession and sensitivity. Finally, irregular tooth alignment could contribute to both dental decay and periodontal disease by making oral hygiene more difficult. There are numerous benefits to seeking orthodontic treatment, and at Salaita & Emrich Orthodontics we want to help make your journey to a new smile a pleasurable and rewarding experience! Successful 4th Fridays events showcase rich culture of Westerville community What do orange cones, bright green sandwich boards, sidewalk chalk, a pile of clipboards and a box of khakicolored visors have in common? They are some of the basic supplies used by the Westerville Visitors & Convention Bureau to orchestrate the largest series of festivals in Central Ohio. Last year, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays drew nearly 11,000 people to Uptown Westerville each month, April through September, and another season is about to kick off on April 26th. “Our volunteers wear the visors and carry the clipboards,” said WVCB Marketing Coordinator Glenda Mihaly. “We couldn’t pull this off without them. The sidewalk chalk is used to mark vendor spaces and the bright green sandwich boards are there to remind you to bring your friends and family Uptown to shop in the shops, peruse the vendors, enjoy the entertainment and say to yourself, ‘don’t I live in a fantastic community!’” At the same time the WVCB shows people outside of Westerville why they should come here to visit, Mihaly said part of the organization’s mission has always been to show residents what is right here in their own backyard. “Westerville residents have it made for so many reasons, not just the excellent services the City provides. There’s our rich heritage, the number of events held here, the quality of those events, the personal service you get when you shop local and eat local. Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays are a combination of all of those things.” THE HISTORY Held in Westerville’s Historic Uptown District since 2000, 4th Fridays began with an Elvis impersonator and a performance by the Westerville Community Band, according to long-time building owner Charles Moon. Mihaly said the WVCB

began adding monthly themes, additional street vendors, and a variety of activities for all ages in 2003. The exponential growth in 4th Fridays began in 2007, thanks to then-Executive Director Jeff Hartnell, who passed away in August 2018. “He was so passionate about this community,” Mihaly said. “He wanted people, both residents and visitors, to be able to come Uptown, eat dinner, buy an ice cream cone, shop and visit with friends. He was always on the lookout to give them more and different reasons to come and more and different kinds of entertainment. That’s what drove us to develop the Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays you see now.” The growth and success of the events led to a major milestone in 2018. “We closed State St. in the Uptown area for 4th Fridays, to all but pedestrians.” WVCB Interim Executive Director John Olivieri said. “The response was amazing! It really added a unique feel and flavor to the events.” Olivieri said support from the City of Westerville has always been crucial to the success of 4th Fridays, especially with the manpower and equipment needed for the road closures. “They have stepped up in a huge way supporting our 4th Fridays and the community is reaping the benefits.” The 2019 season of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays will be a continuation of Hartnell’s vision, taking advantage of new opportunities to showcase the city he loved so much. The goal of 4th Fridays, according to Mihaly, is to welcome residents and visitors to Westerville’s historic Uptown district and show them a great time so they’ll come back. “There are so many reasons why they should!” THE THEMES April’s kick-off “Spring into the Arts” will feature art activities for kids sponsored by The Arts Council of Westerville, the

Artists’ Reception for the exhibit “The Joy of Spring” at David Myers Art Studio and Gallery and performances by the Capriccio Youth Choir. For May 24th’s Back to Nature event, Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks will have live animals on display. Metro Parks and Westerville Parks and Rec will have information about summer programs for all ages. Arts Alley will feature a performance by the Westerville Community Choir. In addition to their regular cruisers and trucks, Westerville Divisions of Police and Fire will have special displays and information for the June 28th Safety Fest. July 26th will be your chance to explore the world without ever leaving Westerville. World Bazaar will be a celebration of customs, cultures and cuisine and will highlight merchants, vendors, restaurants and others in our community who make Westerville such a wonderfully diverse place. Canines rule on August 23rd! For the Dog Days of Summer, you’ll find a special section of vendors that cater to pooches and their people as well as activities both will enjoy. September 27th will bring the harvest home, with Farm in the City. Whether from backyard gardening or high-tech agriculture, the Franklin County Farm Bureau will show you how food gets to you plate. SCHEDULE AND CLOSURES Each year, Mihaly said she encourages vendors and attendees to watch the calendar and not show up on the wrong week. “We always have someone who gets it mixed up,” Mihaly laughed. This year, May and September have five Fridays.” Make sure you come on the fourth one!” Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays are from 6 to 9 p.m. but street closures do start earlier.

“Side streets including E. Home St., E. College Ave., W. College Ave. and Winter St. and the adjacent parking lots close at 4 p.m.,” Mihaly said. “That’s where the orange cones come in.” There’s also no parking on State St. after 4 p.m. Westerville police will begin closing E. and W. Main around 5 p.m. to prepare for the hard closure of State St. through Uptown at 5:30 p.m. “We are asking for cooperation from everyone to make sure these areas are clear so we can begin the setup process,” Olivieri said. Olivieri added that the upcoming construction work in Uptown by both Columbia Gas and the City of Westerville will have some effect on the event. “These jobs are not easy to plan. But when you throw in a shopping and dining area and a monthly event involving street closures, we are asking a lot from the contractors and city engineers,” Olivieri said. “They are doing their best to communicate with us and we’ll locate the fun where the work is not happening and everyone wins.” Questions regarding 4th Friday can be directed to the WVCB at 614-794-0401. Public safety questions should be directed to Lt. Myers of the Westerville Division of Police at 614-901-6493. MORE EVENTS In addition to Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays, Westerville plays host to a variety of activities throughout the year. Descriptions of these events, as well as information about local attractions, restaurants, parks, lodging and meeting facilities and more can be found in the 2019 Westerville Community and Events Guide. Copies of the Guide are available at the Westerville Visitors and Convention Bureau, 20 W. Main St. or by calling 614794-0401. The digital version is available online at www.VisitWesterville.org.

How color can affect your garden Flower gardens can add color and awe-inspiring appeal to a property. The National Gardening Association notes that gardeners can find nearly every color of the spectrum in flowering perennials. So whether you prefer soft pink, are partial to bright red or want to relax in a garden and gaze at something deep blue, chances are you’ll find a perennial to tickle your fancy. The NGA offers the following breakdown of colors to help gardeners learn how their gardens can set the mood they’re looking for.

Bright colors A garden full of bright colors like red, orange, magenta, and yellow can provide a landscape with vigor and energy. The NGA notes that brightly colored flowers can withstand especially bright sunshine, meaning gardeners can marvel at their appearance even when the sun might be adversely affecting other plants and flowers.

Pastel colors Pastels, which include soft pink, powder blue, lavender, and peach, create a tranquil feeling in a garden. This makes pastel perfect for those who want their gardens to be a relaxing, peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The NGA notes that pastels may looked washed out in the midday sun, so they might be best enjoyed early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Complementary colors Complementary colors are those that are opposite one another on the color wheel. Orange and blue are examples of complementary colors. According to the NGA, complementary colors can add creative energy and vitality to a garden.

Harmonious colors These colors are those that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as orange and red. The NGA recommends harmonious colors for gardeners looking

to create a unifying feel in their gardens without resorting to a monochromatic color scheme. Harmonious colors give off a gentle feeling that can make for a relaxing garden atmosphere.

Monochromatic colors Monochromatic gardens can be aweinspiring even though they stick to a single color and don’t provide an array of awe-inspiring colors. The NGA notes that gardeners with monochromatic gardens make them interesting by using plants of various sizes and shapes. When planting a garden, gardeners can choose whichever color scheme they prefer. To learn more about the effects of color on a garden, visit the National Gardening Association website at www.garden.org.

Tip: Restore rusty tools Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegar-soaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Otterbein Summer Theatre 2018: A season of joy, drama, and hilarity Otterbein Summer Theatre invites you to experience one of its most ambitious, exciting and far-reaching seasons yet. “We are thrilled and honored to share with you three theatrical dazzlers. They all abound in joy, wisdom, hilarity, drama, heart, and the power of great storytelling.,” Artistic Director Lenny Leibowitz said. The season will open with a revival of “Smoke on the Mountain,” one of Otterbein Summer Theatre’s most-loved productions since it was first staged there in 2002. David Caldwell, a 1986 graduate of the Otterbein Theatre program, will direct the rousing gospel and bluegrass family favorite which will open May 30 and run through June 15. In this delightful tale of the Sanders Family Singers, the audience is invited to go back to 1938, and pull up a pew for an evening of more than two dozen songs, many of them vintage pop hymns, and hilarious stories delivered despite the mild protestations of the Reverend Oglethorpe. The musical will be followed with “Master Harold…and the Boys,” Athol Fugard’s acclaimed coming of age play about friendship, injustice, and reconciliation. Set in 1950s South Africa,

this is the story of Halle, a white teen who has grown up in the affectionate company of the two black waiters, both employees of his mother’s tearoom in Port Elizabeth. When he learns that his viciously racist, alcoholic father is on his way home from the hospital, his ensuing rage unwittingly triggers his inevitable passage into the culture of hatred fostered by apartheid. Exhilarating, spell-binding, and universally moving, this not to be missed production will be directed by Otterbein faculty member Melissa Lusher and will run for just five performances, June 27-30. The summer season will close with “Guys and Dolls,” which, according to Leibowitz is, “one of the brightest stars in the musical theatre galaxy,” and will feature one of the largest casts of Otterbein Summer Theatre history in a staging that is once intimate and lush. The big, brassy, and timelessly exuberant musical is rich with beloved show tunes including “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” “If I Were A Bell,” “Luck Be A Lady,” and more. “Guys and Dolls” will be directed by Leibowitz himself, with Music Direction by Samuel Clein and Choreography by Stella Hiatt Kane. Performances are scheduled for July 11-20.

In addition to the ambitious three-show subscription season, Otterbein Summer Theatre will offer for the second year a staged reading series entitled, “Rare Sightings.” The series will include three performances, including a concert style version of the Franz LeHar operetta, “The Merry Widow” on June 22, a reading of the theatrical classic “Waiting for Godot,” and one more piece yet to be announced meant just for

children. More information about these events will be available after May 1. Season ticket packages will be available for sale in April for $85 each. Individual tickets, which go on sale beginning May 13, are $25 for “Master Harold…and the Boys” and $33 for “Smoke on the Mountain” and “Guys and Dolls.” Opening night performances begin at 7:30pm; Saturday, Sunday and Friday matinees

are at 2:00pm; and all other performances begin at 8:00pm. The Otterbein Summer Theatre Box Office will officially open on May 13. Box Office hours will be Mon.-Fri. noon-4:00pm, and one hour prior to all performances.
