he diamond ring is followed promptly by questions from eager family and friends: When is the wedding? What is your color scheme? Where is your reception? Their excitement is wellmeaning, of course. But you’ve barely had time to toast your engagement when the decision-making begins. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of planning, you’re in good company. Within days of my husband’s proposal, my elation turned to near panic. We got engaged before Christmas and wanted to marry the following summer, meaning choices had to be made quickly. Church secretaries and venue coordinators informed us that the short planning window wasn’t nearly enough. But that didn’t deter us (or my mom, our volunteer wedding planner), and in a handful of months we managed to plan a memorable July wedding in my hometown. Looking back, though, I wish we’d allowed ourselves more time to celebrate our engagement before diving

into wedding details. More time to reflect on the meaningful milestone. And more time to relax. As I interviewed wedding professionals for this inaugural issue of Capital Style Bride, I realized that I would have benefited from even just a taste of their knowledge. The most relevant piece of advice I gathered was simple: Slow down. That’s what event planner Jo Panarello often warns the frazzled brides-to-be who call her at their breaking point. “This is an important occasion in your life,” she tells them. “Why would you try to make all the decisions in a week?” We have spent months compiling advice from her and dozens of others to give you the ultimate guide in planning a stunning, unforgettable event—and to enjoy the process, too. We also hope to introduce you to some of Central Ohio’s most talented wedding professionals who can help make that happen. (The creativity and care these folks put into their work is phenomenal!) In “30 Tips to Plan Like a Pro,” you’ll find help with maximizing your budget and prioritizing the checklist of ingredients for your big day.

In “Bliss in Bloom,” you’ll find a dozen pages of fabulous fashion, glorious flowers and delectable cakes. In “Love Stories,” you’ll find the heart of our romantic coverage: Brides and grooms shared their wedding albums—and personal tales—with us. We browsed thousands of beautiful photos before choosing a dozen local couples to showcase (and we’ll be posting fresh ones throughout the year at Capital-Style.com). In these pages, you’ll also find ideas on choosing your ideal gown, your groom’s tux, your bridesmaids’ dresses and your mother’s look. And there’s plenty more to ogle, too, from dazzling rings to chic venues. So pour yourself some bubbly, settle in, turn these pages and be inspired. Because your big day shouldn’t be the only one that’s fun; all the days leading to it should be, too. Enjoy.

budget

Think twice about ordering invitations online. Most websites doesn’t offer one-on-one attention. By shopping locally, “You’re going to have your hand held, and you’re going to have that (personal) experience.”

1

Prioritize. Decide which elements are most meaningful to you and spend accordingly. “Instead of taking a budget and dribbling it away, to me it’s more important to have one thing that everybody will remember.”

2

Need to cut costs? Consider trimming your guest list. “That’s your number-one savings. It exponentially saves you money.”

Behold the envelope! It is someone’s first impression of your event. Handwrite names and addresses, and consider using a custom monogram stamp or seal.

Hire a professional planner—even if just for the day. “The biggest mistake I see is people trying to do it themselves.”

Shop around. “Find someone who will treat your wedding like the special event that it is and not just another wedding on their books.”

Don’t assume you can’t afford a planner— most offer a range of packages and pricing. “A good planner can work within pretty much any budget, and I think the goal is always to make it seem that the budget was way bigger than it actually was.”

Listen before you sign on the dotted line, especially when hiring a live band. Video is a good place to start, but there’s no substitute for observing a band’s sound (and stage presence) in person.

Be wary of entertainers with egos. “Part of their job is to keep the spotlight and everybody’s focus on the bride and groom, and that’s a tough balancing act for groups. But the good ones know how to do it.”

Look for versatility—a blend of photojournalism along with modern portraits. “A wedding album is like a storybook. It should remind you of a handcrafted photo essay that beautifully illustrates your wedding day.”

Registry Tips

gifting Hoping for perfect presents? Registering the right way is key. Here are quick tips on making gifting a good experience for those doing the giving—and the getting. Story by: KRISTY ECKERT

I

Photos by: WILL SHILLING

Register at a few different stores to accommodate guests in different locales and those seeking varying price points. Your best bet? At least one national chain and one local boutique.

DITCH THE LIST Forget about the registry check-list. Register for what fits into your life. If you know that fine china is only

going to sit in boxes in your basement for the next 50 years, don’t feel obligated to ask for it. There are no rules.

LESS IS MORE Fewer options show guests what you really want— and give you a better chance of getting them.

GUILT, BE GONE! Love that fabulousbut-pricey silverware? Ask for it! Registries

aren’t demands; they’re wish lists. Guests who look at registries are seeking guidance, so don’t feel guilty for offering it. Your family and friends don’t want to waste their money any more than you want to re-gift something.

KEEP IT UP Ask the stores to keep your registries up through the end of the year. They can serve as helpful holiday gift guides for family.

Juliska Stoneware $18 (side plate), $34 (dessert plate), $21 (mug), $17 (saucer), $39 (dinner plate), $66 (charger) and $78 (serving dish with bowls). Available at: Rue de Lily, 32 E. Olentangy St., Powell

With her Aug. 21 nuptials months away and a gorgeous 1920s-style Vera Wang dress awaiting her, the bride-to-be signed up for a bridal boot camp

at Forever Fit. “It sounded just like a fun and challenging workout,” she said. Boot camp-style programs get their name from the highintensity training the military uses—think tire jumping and wall crawls. While camps for the newly betrothed vary, the promise of quick all-over toning and engaging camaraderie holds a particular allure. Nancy Eisenman, who runs Forever Fit’s bridal boot camp in Grandview, said the training Bride-to-be Ashlee Carver trains with Yun Fitness Boot Camps

isn’t just for brides—her clients have ranged from bridesmaids to future mothers-in-law. “I love working with the women,” Eisenman said. “We play music and it’s very upbeat. I love to see the transformation.” While many brides are looking for arm and back toning thanks to the dominance of wedding gowns that bare those features, Eisenman said most of her participants are looking for a change in lifestyle. She uses interval training that mixes cardio and strength exercises to achieve overall fitness and offers nutritional counseling, too. Jason Yun of Yun Fitness Boot Camps agrees that “it’s a quick way to get in shape. But it’s usually just overall about losing inches. They want to get more toned. ...They want to look their absolute best and look good in that wedding dress.” Yun offers special bridal packages at his Hilliard and Downtown locations and plans to expand soon into Gahanna and New Albany. His bridal boot camps particularly focus on the honeymoon aspect of a bride’s big day. Each participant gets a “Look Better Naked” DVD and nutrition manual. No matter what a bride is looking to achieve with a boot camp, Yun suggests signing up at least three months in advance of the wedding day. There might even be a hidden bonus beyond a new, sculpted shape. For Chavez, hitting the gym helped her combat stress during the last few hectic months of wedding planning. She enjoyed the boot camp so much, she said, that she still attends.

Professional fit consultants offer advice on how to find the dress of your dreams

T

here is an art to pairing a bride with her perfect wedding dress. So before stepping into the fitting room, bridal boutique consultants first set aside time to chat with their clients and assess their personality, style and body shape. The goal is to answer one important question: “How do you want to look on your wedding day?” That answer usually guides everyone in one direction— and eliminates the need (but

not always the urge) for a bride to try on hundreds of dresses. “Every bride has a picture in her mind,” said Wafa Laban, owner of Elegant Bride in Dublin. “My advice, the moment you find the right cut, the right fabric, (is to) stop.” Laban and other bridal experts say that choosing one silhouette—straight, a-line or ballgown, for example—establishes a flattering shape and helps to simplify the search. “What we try very hard to do is play up the assets that the bride wants to most show,”

said Lil Stalnaker, general manager of Wendy’s Bridal in Dublin. “Often, that could be a waistline, or maybe the shape of the hips. Every bride has something she wants to minimize and something she wants to maximize, and finding the right dress does that.” Looks aren’t the only consideration, though. Comfort is an important factor, too. Stalnaker encourages her clients to walk, sit and move around the store in their favorite dresses. “You’re hugging, dancing, posing for photos” on your wedding day, she said. “You

have to be able to function and envision all of that.” Most bridal boutiques require scheduling appointments in advance. A oneon-one approach makes for a more-personalized, lessstressful shopping experience, said Kristin Cooke, manager of Big Rock Little Rooster in the Short North. “You want to feel like you’re shopping with a friend,” Cooke said. Courtney Leister, owner of Girls in White Dresses in the Arena District, agrees: “Have fun while you’re shopping.”

P

ractice makes perfect when it comes to wedding-day hair and makeup. Beauty experts recommend scheduling trial runs with your hairstylist and make-up artist two or three weeks in advance to share your vision and experiment with different looks. “Something might look great in your head or in a photo, but as soon as you see it on, you know what works,” said Chantel Polascak, a Charles Penzone salon director. A preview doesn’t just give brides peace of mind—it also helps the professionals they’re working with to estimate how much time they’ll need to pencil in for beautification the day of the wedding.

BRIDAL BEAUTY

HAIR DOS l Share photos of styles you love with your stylist. The images will provide inspiration and ensure you’re both on the same page. l Sleek updos are a classic choice, but they aren’t the only option. Experiment with a voluminous halfup, half-down style, loose ponytail or side-swept chignon for a modern look. l Plan accordingly: Bridal hairstyles typically take 45 minutes to an hour to create. l Wash your hair the day or night before. “Your hair tends to relax a little,” Polascak said. “A little build-up is good.” l Wear a button-up shirt to keep your style intact. l Bring your veil and any hair accessories (flowers, headbands, tiaras, etc.) to the salon.

72

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM Bride 2011

SKIN SECRETS l Don’t schedule a facial the same week of your big day. “Facials are meant to bring things to the surface, so you might have one or two blemishes,” said Rachel Lordeaux, a makeup artist at Skin Perfect in Worthington. The same rule applies to waxing. l Choose a foundation with a natural, matte finish and make sure the color is well-blended.

Apply powder to control shine and don’t skimp on blush, which always looks softer in photos, Lordeaux advises. l Wear waterproof black mascara (even if you normally prefer brown). l Lip color should be glossy, not matte. l Stash a powder compact, lip liner and lipstick or gloss in your purse for touchups.

The Bridesmaids

Breathtaking BRIDESMAIDS How to pull off a polished look for your wedding party with ease Story by: DANA WILSON

I

SHOPPING

TIPS l Avoid inviting your entire bridal party to go dress hunting. “Start shopping with a maid of honor, somebody whose opinion you care most about,” said Lil Stalnaker of Wendy’s Bridal in Dublin. “Once you’ve established what you like for her, you can see whether that same dress could work for everybody.” l Consider the season of your event when choosing a fabric. Chiffon and other light fabrics work best in warm weather, while silk or satin are appropriate for cooler months. l If you allow your bridesmaids to style themselves, give them guidelines.

P

icking one dress that fits and flatters your entire bridal party isn’t a simple task. And many brides are tempted to turn their bridesmaids loose, allowing them to pick their

own dresses, shoes and even accessories. But what sounds like a stress-free idea doesn’t always turn out that way. One bridal consultant said she cautions her clients to set clear style guidelines for bridesmaids to avoid ending up with

TRENDY TOUCHES l Go short: Cocktaillength gowns always look chic, even for formal affairs.

a clashing, unpolished look. “Some brides say they don’t care, but in the end you do care,” said Lil Stalnaker, general manager of Wendy’s Bridal in Dublin. “You don’t want a little summer sundress that looks like a garden setting with an evening, sophisticated gown. You want the style of the looks to go together.” To ensure the looks mesh, Stalnaker suggests picking out your bridal gown before browsing the racks for your bridesmaids’ attire. “It’s a pretty easy way to do it,” she said. “You want it to look good with your dress and you want

it to look good on your girls.” Careful coordination doesn’t have to be boring, though. Many designers offer bridesmaid dress collections in varying styles and fabrics that can easily be mixed and matched. Color doesn’t have to be uniform, either, as long as the tones are complementary, said Lindsay Fork, owner of La Jeune Mariee bridal boutique in Worthington. She advises against setting your sights on a specific color too early because it limits your choices. Search for a style you love first, she said, then find the perfect palette.

Styling Mom

Making Mom

SHINE Story by: KRISTY ECKERT

Styling by: ELIZABETH BEAN SMITH and OLGA LITMANOVSKAYA of WARDROBE THERAPY

Yes, it’s your daughter’s day: But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t glow, too

T

oo many mothers of the bride make the same humble mistake: It’s not their day to shine, they say, so they’d rather just dress comfortably. Think again, says Columbus stylist Elizabeth Bean Smith, owner of Wardrobe Therapy, who often helps moms choose wedding looks. “This is an important day for you as well,” Smith said. “Feel glamorous. Let yourself be beautiful. Don’t be afraid to get dolled up.” That may require dressing out of a woman’s comfort zone, she noted.

“I think that (Mom) needs to look at it just like the bride and really put thought into her outfit, because she is speaking on behalf of her family,” Smith said. “She needs to look and feel great, but sometimes that means pushing yourself.” With that in mind, here are Smith’s tips: l You’re not a bridesmaid Don’t try matching the bridesmaids’ colors or styles. “A lot of times, they can begin looking too costume-y,” Smith said. Instead, Mom should wear whatever color makes her feel best. l Black is OK Many mothers believe black is against the rules, Smith said. Not so: “It’s

GUEST DRESSED Attending a wedding? You, too, should put thought into your attire. Be sure you are aware of the setting for both the ceremony and reception so that you can dress appropriately, Smith advised. If the ceremony is religious, know whether you need to cover your arms. And always consider the time of day, then dress accordingly. “I think nothing’s tackier than when I go to a wedding at three in the afternoon and the girls all look like they’re going to a club,” Smith said. “The key thing is knowing where you’re going, what type of affair it is. When in doubt, ask.” The bride, she said, will be thankful.

actually very modern now to wear black to a wedding,” she said. “It makes it very black tie.” l Consider a wrap It is a good idea for Mom to cover her arms in the church (for both religious and temperature reasons) and photos. But traditional “mother of the bride” jackets can make mom look frumpy. Wraps are elegant and stylish. Boleros or cropped jackets are also

worthy options. l Options abound Consider what bridal stores offer, but also look at traditional clothing stores or boutiques. l Wear your undergarments They’re slimming—and are especially helpful with oftenunforgiving materials like silk and chiffon. And remember: It’s not all about comfort. “Even though you want to be comfortable,” Smith said, “you still want to be appropriate.”

ome looks never go out of style, and the classic tuxedo is one of them. Grooms who choose a timeless silhouette will be following a key trend in men’s fashion. “Simple is coming back when it comes to tuxedos,” said Patrick McMeans, a professional clothier for Astor & Black, a Columbus-based custom suit company. “Men want to think ‘I can keep this

78

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM Bride 2011

tuxedo and wear it for years down the road.’ ” While grooms might think that wearing a business suit for their wedding is the easy way out, suits tend to be reserved for weddings that are more casual or held outdoors. For more lavish affairs or traditional weddings, McMeans recommends a tux. Tuxedo jackets come in varying cuts and colors, but a black jacket with two buttons and a satin lapel is consistent

with the classic look, McMeans said. “As formalwear becomes more formal, so do the tuxedos,” he said. “What we see more than anything is standard black with a nice matching vest.” Even tuxedo pants come with specifications. Stylists say to look for flat-front styles with no belt loops, and, preferably, no rear pockets. Although black is typical for tuxedos, navy, brown and gray are also sneaking onto the scene. “Gray has become the new black,” said Aaron

Roberts, general manager of Romanoff’s Classic Tuxedos. “Gray will never replace black, but it is there for someone who wants something trendy.” There has been a recent Hollywood influence of wearing bow ties instead of neckties with tuxedos, Roberts said, and colorful versions will likely make a comeback this year. Splashes of color can also be added with vests and accessories, such as pocket squares or cufflinks, to complement bridesmaids dresses and other wedding décor.

Behind the Scenes JANET REESE Owner Flowers on Orchard Lane

J

anet Reese’s uniquely creative talents have wowed people in an almost unimaginable number of ways. First, the Westerville native was an assistant portfolio manager on Wall Street. Then, she became a jewelry designer whose work

was featured in Vogue and sold in New York City’s highest-end stores, from Bergdorf Goodman to Henri Bendel. Next, she opened an upscale women’s clothing boutique in the Florida Keys. Finally, she landed in the flower business. Now back in Columbus, Reese and her husband (along with seven full-time employees) run Flowers on Orchard Lane. Weddings comprise about 90 percent of their business. Reese and her staff have even been flown to places from

California to New York to gives brides their dream décor. Sitting beside a wall full of thank-you cards from happy brides, Reese looks through albums of weddings like a proud momma, smiles, and quotes Emerson: “Earth laughs in flowers.” Flowers, she said, can set the tone for a whole wedding, making it soft and sophisticated or fun and funky. “We get excited about every wedding,” Reese said. “Because every wedding is different. Every personality is different.”

Jan Kish

JAN KISH Owner La Petite Fleur

J

an Kish is known for the impossibly extravagant, so it’s no surprise that when former University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler’s son married a Columbus girl, they called on Kish for the wedding cake. And she delivered: The reception featured intricate, three-dimensional replicas of both Ohio Stadium and Michigan Stadium. Kish, whose family is Hungarian, was a foodie from a young age. “There was always good baking going on—good food,” she said. “So I was immersed in that.” Even after she earned her English degree from the University of Oxford and spent 10 years working in Courtney Leister

cardiology, she couldn’t resist the culinary pull. So she studied at one culinary school and two pastry schools and opened a catering business that grew into two restaurants. But eventually Kish chose to focus on her passion—cakes. Her amazing creations—her most expensive fed 800 and cost $32,000—have garnered national media attention. And they’re not just pretty: Her most popular flavor recently won the best-tasting cake on TLC’s reality competition “Ultimate Cake Off.” “You eat with your eyes first,” Kish said. “(But) if the followthrough isn’t there, it’s a huge disappointment.” To top things off, Kish also performs reception sabering, which involves her slashing open a champagne bottle with a sword-like weapon. She enjoys helping make fairytale weddings a reality. “If you can do that,” she said, “you’ve achieved your mission.” Lindsay Fork

COURTNEY LEISTER Owner Girls in White Dresses

N

othing pleases Courtney Leister more than matching a bride with her dream dress. So, inevitably, one of the most stressful parts of her job is witnessing an opinionated relative or friend try to push the bride into a look that doesn’t fit her style. That’s when Leister and her staff diplomatically intervene. Leister’s advice usually goes something like this: “It’s got to be your style. This is a dress you’re going to move in and rock the whole night—you’re not just going to be standing like you are in a dressing room.” Leister is both a fashionista and a businesswoman, having worked in the corporate world as a fashion

consultant, retail buyer and purse designer before running her boutique. She always envisioned having her own shop, and loves the creative side of her work. “I’m styling the client for the most important day of their life.”

LINDSAY FORK Owner La Jeune Mariee

D

uring visits to the public library as a little girl, Lindsay Fork insisted on checking out Modern Bride and Brides magazines. She obsessed over glossy photos of wedding gowns and remembers falling so in love with a beaded St. Pucchi ballgown that she tore out a page from the borrowed magazine and saved it. “I’ve always been a hopeless romantic,” she

Kristin Cooke

said. Fork now channels that passion into selecting the sophisticated collection of gowns that line the racks at La Jeune Mariee. Though she has an eye for fashion, Fork holds a degree in entrepreneurship from Xavier University and worked in sales and marketing before taking over the boutique in 2008. “The one question I consistently get asked is, ‘Did you study fashion?’ ” Fork said. “I think you have to have a business background.” But it’s the emotional side of her business, she said—like seeing delighted brides in their chosen gowns—that’s most rewarding.

KRISTIN COOKE Shop Manager Big Rock Little Rooster

K

ristin Cooke felt like a princess on her wedding day. “I was fortunate to have the most amazing wedding, and what made it amazing was the fact that everybody was supportive every step of the way,” she said. “I was number one.” Six years later, she believes that every bride deserves to feel the same way. Cooke and shop owner Rebecca Reeder take a no-rules approach to styling their clients. “It’s whatever the bride wants,” Cooke said. “When she comes in and asks, ‘What am I supposed to do?’ our immediate response is, ‘What do you want to do?’ ” That question has led to some edgy, non-traditional looks, such as pairing cowboy boots with a high-fashion gown or forgoing white for a black cocktail dress. In the end, the decision isn’t really about the cost of the dress or the label sewn inside, Cooke said. “It’s how they look in it.” Bride 2011 CAPITAL-STYLE.COM

shley and Matthew wanted to celebrate their love in a less-thantraditional way. So, on May 30, 2010, the couple invited 40 of their closest friends to what guests thought was a Memorial Day cookout. When everyone arrived, they were welcomed to a surprise backyard wedding reception. Ashley, co-owner of Cheesecake Boutique, and Matthew, an orthopedic veterinary surgeon, had tied the knot earlier that day in a 1940s-themed private ceremony. “It was just us, and I think for me that was what really mattered,” Ashley said. “I just looked at him and everybody else just kind of disappeared.” The newlyweds continued the celebration Aug. 14 by inviting 220 friends to a more extravagant reception at the Columbus College of Art & Design. “We went all out,” Ashley said. The second reception was “big, gorgeous, glamorous and fantastic.”

Lisa & Tim Kelso

T

The Mariees De Paris gown that Lisa chose for her June 19, 2010 wedding was one of the first big planning decisions she made, and it helped set the tone for the day. Her vision to create a “timeless, classic and sophisticated” affair was carried out in every detail, down to the 1950 Cadillac the couple rented from Cardinal Transportation. The Kelso’s victory lap in the car after the ceremony was a nod to the past. “My parents and my aunts and uncles had this picture framed of all their weddings when they were in a limo, and I always loved that car picture,” Lisa said. “I wanted to have something like that.”

She pointed him out to her friends: “That’s my future husband, right there,” she joked. Four years later, the couple held the rehearsal dinner for their Sept. 5, 2010 wedding at Park Street Tavern— the same bar where Karen had first admired Chad from afar. The couple explored several urban reception venues before settling on a courtyard at COSI with a view of the city. The setting was “absolutely beautiful,” Karen said. “We have a wonderful love and wonderful relationship, and we wanted to celebrate it.”

enny, a business account manager, and Joey, a realtor, wanted the location of their wedding to reflect their love for each other—and for Columbus. When they toured the rooftop at the Renaissance Hotel Downtown, they found the perfect place to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of their marriage. But one unexpected surprise threatened to spoil the sophisticated Sept. 4, 2010 celebration—the wind. “It was the most uncontrollable thing,” Jenny said. “Our guests were troopers, and as soon as the sun set, the wind died down.” She laughs at the memory now. Weather aside, she said the day was exactly as she’d imagined.

Jenna & Ryan Wollenberg

T

he gift of her great grandmother’s diamond engagement ring inspired Jenna, an art history teacher at Columbus State, to plan a wedding as elegant as the treasured family heirloom. From her lace gown to the flowered brooch pinned in her hair, everything was centered around the ring, which also doubled as Jenna’s “something old” accessory during her June 19, 2010 wedding ceremony. One of her favorite moments that day was her husband’s tearful reaction as she walked down the aisle. “He’s in the military,” she said, “and he’s a big teddy bear.”

anielle, a personal trainer, and Edward, an operations and logistics manager, made an effort to personalize every last detail of their Aug. 21, 2010 wedding. “I think it just kind of fell into place because I felt like we knew what was us,” Danielle said. As part of a carefree theme, guests weren’t assigned table numbers at the wedding reception. Instead, they were seated with place cards that held special meaning to the couple. Each table included a framed photo and short story documenting their adventures together, such as hiking Mount Marcy in New York, running a half-marathon in Nashville, Tenn., and vacationing in Florida’s Siesta Key. The vignettes were such a hit that some guests even requested a compilation.

s a cross-country runner at Denison University, Ashley spent hours practicing and racing on her team’s home course at the Bryn Du Mansion in Granville. Her then-boyfriend Andrew cheered her on from the sidelines, and after graduation the memories there stuck with Ashley. So when it came time to plan her wedding, the mansion seemed a natural choice. “I pretty much knew it was going to be at Bryn Du all along,” Ashley said. “It’s just the perfect place. I wanted a spring or summer wedding where it could be outdoors.” Ashley, a graduate student, and Andrew, a lab researcher, married on July 24, 2010—a hot, sunny day. To keep cool, guests were offered parasols and served Whit’s Frozen Custard, a local treat.

manda initially envisioned marrying Mark in Italy—a place that holds special meaning. She had traveled there after reconnecting with Mark, an old friend who, like her, was divorced. While there, she finished her interior design degree and fell in love with Mark over e-mails and phone calls. But instead of flying abroad, the couple decided they’d rather spend the day with family. “We wanted our kids to take an important role,” Amanda said. “We were blending a family, and we took a lot of time to really work on that aspect of it.” The couple married July 3, 2010 at a historic B&B owned by Amanda’s mother. An exposed-brick interior and Tuscan-themed patio offered European flair close to home.

ob didn’t want to spoil the image of his bride walking down the aisle on her father’s arm. But Becky liked the idea of staging some photos in the gardens of Franklin Park Conservatory before guests arrived at their June 4, 2010 wedding. As a compromise, Becky and her father arrived early and waited in the Brides Garden for Rob prior to the ceremony. “Rob walked out to me and we had a few moments to ourselves,” Becky said. “When I saw him, it was just such a relief.” Their photographer captured the couple’s private first look—and the ensuing celebration.

tuffy is not their style, so Christy, a nurse practitioner, and Bryce, a medical sales executive, set out to plan a wedding that was fun and vibrant. “I love spring, and I love flowers,” Christy said. She remembers describing her vision for the day to event planner Emilie Duncan this way: “I want it to have the feeling of the first warm day of spring in college, when everybody would cut class.” With Duncan’s help, the couple achieved a casual yet classy vibe. Many of the roughly 300 guests at their April 24, 2010 wedding traveled from out of town, so they centered much of their wedding-weekend activities in the Short North within walking distance of Downtown hotels. Having so many friends at the celebration made the day memorable, Christy said.

GOWN CARE

TIPS l Avoid storing your bridal gown in the attic, basement or garage where there are extreme changes in temperature or humidity l Hang your wedding gown by loops inside the gown, never by fragile shoulder seams that can stretch or sag l Do not store your wedding gown in tissue paper or a plastic bag, which can trap moisture l When choosing a dry cleaner, ask what precautions their specialists take to protect delicate trims and decorations, and how the cleaner guards against latent stains l Ask the dry cleaner whether they will process your bridal gown themselves or send it away l Ask to personally inspect your wedding gown before it’s placed into the display container, which should be an acid-free, archival wedding chest lined with fabric or acid-free tissue

fter just a day of wear, your wedding gown might no longer be a vision of white. Even the most dainty bride usually ends up staining her dress with something— even if she can’t immediately see it. So before tucking that potential heirloom away in the closet, experts recommend having it professionally cleaned. “Hidden spills may appear later in time,” said Margaret Butler, marketing director and bridal specialist for Dublin Cleaners. “Champagne, white wine, cake icing and other clear, sugary or white substances may not be seen immediately, but will eventually appear as a brown or yellow stain.” To keep their gown looking as perfect as the moment they walked down the aisle, many brides opt for gown preservation, Butler said. Dublin Cleaners has practiced the art

for nearly 30 years and uses a rigorous process that includes wet or dry cleaning (depending on the fabric), followed by thorough inspection. Some fabrics fare better than others when it comes to removing stains, Butler said. Silk is the most fragile, while gowns made of synthetic materials are more resilient. Clothing Care, another local dry cleaner that services gowns, has even treated accidental pre-wedding stains, said general manager John Phillippi. Beyond cleaning soiled dresses, many dry cleaners are also in the business of

restoring vintage gowns and returning yellowed fabric back to its original color. “Some people bring in gowns from 60 or 80 years ago,” said Steve Smith, coowner of Columbus Lace. “We did a gown… that was 107 years old.” The typical cost to clean or preserve a gown ranges from $200 to $400. While brides should, of course, try to stay pristine on their big day, they should also know that almost anything can be fixed. “The most important thing,” Butler said, “is to focus on having a fabulous time.”
