Vance Outdoors hits the mark with indoor shooting range

Ray Joseph, range manager at Vance Outdoors, bellowed out the warning — necessary because of the ear protection making hearing a difficult feat — to let everyone in the shooting range know that people were about to start firing their guns.

He’s right. This gun range is hot.

Since opening a year ago in Obetz, shooters of all ages and experience levels have come to take aim in the Vance Outdoors shooting range and training center, one of just a handful of indoor shooting ranges in Columbus.

The family-owned-and-operated Vance Outdoors has been the go-to store for hunting, camping, archery and outdoor enthusiasts for more than 30 years, with locations in Columbus and Hebron, but the 56,000-square-foot Obetz location is the only one to offer a gun range in addition to its retail store.

A shooting range seemed like the natural next step, allowing them to be a full-service firearms dealer, said Kimm Vance-Bush, director of sales and marketing for Vance Outdoors.

“Shooting is one of our passions,” she said, noting that both she and her brothers —Doug Vance, who runs the law enforcement division and Todd Vance, who heads up retail operations — all love to shoot, and hit the range themselves when they can find the time.

“I’m a Glock girl,” Vance-Bush said with a smile.

Vance Outdoors opened a 56,000-square-foot retail store and shooting range in Obetz last year, enabling them to be a full-service firearms dealer. and share their experience, she said.

Their experience is apparent from the moment you head to the shooting range, as instructors make it clear to customers that safety comes first.

Customers are all required to watch a safety video before entering the 24-lane shooting range, and even the doors that lead to the three separate bays — one for rifles, two for pistols — are designed so that one door won’t open unless the other doors are closed.

The range has strict rules, such as wearing protective eye and ear wear, closed-toe shoes and high-necked shirts, to keep customers from being hurt by the brass and shells. Vance Outdoors will even provide free closed-toe shoes to customers who need them.

If you bring your own firearm into the store you can bring your own ammo. However, if you rent a firearm at Vance, you must also purchase the ammo from the store. If you don’t have a gun or just want to take a shot at something new, you can rent from 120 different firearms.

Instructors will work with novice shooters or those who want help, and there is always a range officer in the shooting range monitoring everyone’s activities.

“We pride ourselves on having the experts and a super-safe environment,” Vance-Bush said.

This program capability is exclusive to Vance Outdoors’ shooting range, enabling the shooter to continue shooting without having to reset the target. “It’s where we shine,” Joseph said.

Vance Outdoors also offers classes and programs that range from welcoming new shooters to how to clean your firearm and conceal-and-carry classes, said Dick Wheeler, training coordinator and lead instructor for Vance Outdoors.

They are even creating their own online conceal-and-carry permit

course, providing additional resources to gun owners to get approved for a conceal-and-carry license, he said.

And if you think shooting ranges are just for hunters, that couldn’t be further from the truth, said Joseph, who noted men, women and children (10 years and older) all come to shoot.

There are youth leagues and ladies’ nights, and range memberships are available that allow you to add a spouse or kids for an additional charge.

“It’s not just for hunters or men,” Joseph said. “We want it to be a family affair.”

Fire away: Be prepared throughout hunting season Tips for a safe and prosperous deer hunting season

BY CAROLYN DIX THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH There are no natural predators in Ohio for white-tailed deer.

This is what makes hunting season so important, said Karen Norris, wildlife communications specialist for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

“We provide a great habitat in Ohio for deer,” she said, including crop fields and wooded areas, but without hunting, there would be economic problems from deer eating crops, as well as more deer-vehicle crashes.

Last year Ohio’s hunters harvested 175,745 deer, Norris said.

But while hunting deer will help control the population, there are rules and guidelines hunters need to follow and pointers for being prepared.

For starters, there are specific dates for Ohio’s 2015-2016 deer hunting season: • Archery: Sept. 26-Feb. 7, 2016 • Youth gun: Nov. 21-22 • Gun: Nov. 30-Dec. 6 and Dec. 28-29 • Muzzleloader: Jan. 9-12, 2016

This season, hunters can only harvest six deer and one antler deer statewide to maintain deer populations, Norris said.

And, the .450 Marlin straightwalled cartridge was added to the list of straight-walled cartridge rifles that are legal for gun and youth-gun seasons.

The following tips will also help you throughout this year’s hunting season: • Check your hunting license.

Ensure that it’s valid and covers all varieties of wildlife you intend to hunt.

Even if you’ve hunted in the same

location, check that permit requirements haven’t changed.

Regulations get updated yearly, so don’t assume that what was valid last year still applies.

• Bring the right clothing.

Depending on where you’re headed, you’ll need a light or heavy jacket, gloves, hat and layers for nights when the temperatures dip.

And don’t forget the rain gear. If in a warmer climate, you can dress down with lighter clothes, but whatever the case, don’t forget your orange hunting vest.

Camouflage clothing is necessary to hide the human outline, and because deer rely on their sense of smell, you also need to cover up the human scent, said Kenneth Hughes, manager at Vance Outdoors.

Hunters can wear scent-absorbing clothing items, or they can opt for more affordable scent cover-ups such as sprays, he said.

• Pack your bag. This tip is twofold: If you’re planning to head out of town, you’ll need a hunting permit for that state.

If you’re staying local, you should pack a bag filled with essential items that will help you survive any unexpected situation, be it weather or something more dire. These include a cell phone, GPS, first-aid kit, lighter, maps, binoculars, small rope, pocket knife, bottled water and a few highenergy snacks.

• Take any necessary accessories.

This could include extra ammunition, maps, flashlight and whistle.

If you’re hunting from a tree stand, you need a full-body tree stand harness system to stay safe, Norris said.

Get ready for camping season

(MS) — Camping is a popular outdoor activity that attracts many enthusiasts year after year. Some people camp every month while others only have time for one great excursion into the wilderness each year. This year, millions of camping trips will take place across the country.

The most important consideration is where you are going and what the weather will be, said David Noel, lead camping outfitter for Cabela’s, noting that is how you determine the right gear and clothing to bring to protect you from the elements.

Preparation is key to a successful camping trip. Here are tips to ensure your trip is as fun and safe as possible.

Gear A tent will be your first line of defense against the outdoors. Although plenty of people prefer to sleep out under the stars, a tent is a place to avoid inclement weather and insects and have a little privacy.

Your tent need not be too big, unless you plan to share it with many of your fellow campers.

Since you will be spending the majority of your time outdoors, don’t feel pressured to buy the tent equivalent of a three-room suite. A good tent should be sturdy, weather-resistant and large enough to fit the people who will be sleeping in it during your trip.

Private sites also may employ security personnel and maintenance crews to ensure the areas are clean and safe and to enforce campground rules. This may not be the case at public campsites, where conditions may be inconsistent from site to site.

Invest in a pad to place on the floor of the tent to shield you from the hard ground. The pad will make sleeping more comfortable.

If you will be sleeping during warm-weather months, you don’t have to worry about an expensive sleeping bag. An average-weight one will be just fine. Don’t forget to pack a pillow.

A cooler filled with food and drinks will tide you over for the trip. If you plan to cook, you will need to bring the ingredients for meals.

“Freeze-dried food is excellent” for camping trips, Noel

said, adding there is a wide variety available.

Where to camp Campsites may be public or private. Public campgrounds are generally funded by tax dollars and maintained by parks departments or government offices. They may be free to enter or charge a nominal fee for use. Because of the low cost involved, they may be quite popular and crowded during peak camping season.

Private campsites are run by private companies or individuals and may also feature RV hookups.

In many instances, private campsites sell memberships to interested parties, which gives access to certain private areas. They may have more amenities than public camp-

Avoid critters Animals and insects are part of the camping experience. While they are unavoidable, there are some measures you can take to reduce the propensity for bothersome bug bites or clever critters raiding the cooler.

Keeping a clean campsite is perhaps the most effective animal and insect deterrent.

Whenever possible, keep food locked away in an airtight cooler or other container.

Dry foods can be stored under lock and key in the car.

Raccoons, squirrels, birds and skunks all have been known to patrol campgrounds for an easy meal. Also, you don’t want to lure in larger predators, such as bears or wild cats.

To avoid insects, steer clear of perfumed products. Keep lights dim at night, as bright lights attract mosquitoes and other biting bugs.

Use appropriate insect repellents to help further repel bugs.

Plan

for the wetness Even if it doesn’t rain, dew

is an inevitable part of camping outdoors. Warm weather with high humidity can make dew even more plentiful. Use a shower curtain or another plastic impenetrable liner beneath your tent to reduce wetness and chilliness while you sleep.

Be sure to bring in clothes and remove items from your clotheslines before you retire for the night if you don't want them damp the next morning. Use tarps to cover anything that should not get wet.

Be sure to pack plenty of dry socks and changes of clothes and store them in zipper-top bags in the event clothing does get wet. Wet clothes can be uncomfortable and increase your risk for hypothermia.

Rain gear is important, as is appropriate footwear for weather and terrain, Noel said. “If your feet are uncomfortable, the whole trip will be bad,” he said.

In addition, be mindful of animal habitats. What you bring to the campsite, including trash, should be removed when you are done. Do not leave a mess behind.

But, considering hunting seasons can be brief, preparation helps hunters make the most of their time spent in the field.

• Purchase your license, tag or stamp. “Catch up on all the laws,” as they may change each year, advised Kenneth Hughes, a manager at Vance Outdoors. Many wildlife departments require that hunters register in advance of the season, and this registration includes securing a hunting license.

Because there is a limit to how many animals each hunter can hunt, tags for the animals they’re hunting also will be issued.

Hunters planning on going out for the season should stay apprised of when licensing and registration begins and ends so they can hunt legally.

• Scout areas. The landscape can

change from year to year depending on a host of factors, including construction, commercialization and weather.

Areas once open to hunting may now be restricted lands. Map out your potential hunting location and be aware of any new landmarks or changes.

• Check and replenish gear.

Inspect weaponry, field-dressing supplies, clothing and other supplies for wear and tear. Address any issues that need to be fixed, or replace items as necessary.

If you hunt out of a tree stand or blind, make sure it is sturdy and in good condition prior to use.

Have your bow checked by a professional every year before archery season begins, Hughes said.

“Making sure your bow is set up properly will enhance your ability to harvest a deer fast and cleanly,” he said, adding that can be the difference

between killing a deer and wounding it, which is what you don’t want to have happen.

• Get in shape.

Hunting often requires hiking in and out of the great outdoors in various terrain. It’s helpful to increase physical activity leading up to the hunt to prepare your body for the physical demands of hunting.

• Organize and pack gear. Ensure your equipment is clean, in working order and packed away in your travel bags.

Establish a system of organization and a checklist so you’re certain you

• Always hunt safely. It is quite easy to get swept up in the moment when tracking game.

Gone glamping — luxury hits the road

BY CAROLYN DIX DISPATCH MEDIA GROUP Leave the sleeping bags and tents at home. Camping has been given a serious upgrade, and glamping (glamorous camping) has become a new way to vacation among the well-to-do.

Air conditioning, microwaves, queen-size beds and even toilets are luxuries most campers do without, but for many with the means, hitching an upscale travel trailer to the back of their SUV or truck or driving a full-on recreational RV has changed all that.

So why the swift interest in hitting the open road in style?

“I think the last couple of years — with the challenges in the economy— people haven’t had the chance to go live life,” said Chris Haydocy, owner of Haydocy Airstream & RV. As the baby boomer generation hits retirement age, they are ready to travel, and many are opting for Airstream travel trailers, said Tim Maxwell, eastern regional director of sales for Airstream.

The iconic Airstream brand, recognizable by its rounded shape and aluminum siding, has been on the road since 1931.

Maxwell said it offers travelers a sense of nostalgia. “A lot of baby boomers saw them as kids. We want to relive our pasts,” he said, adding the majority of Airstream buyers are ages 60–69.

Each of the luxurious Airstream travel trailer series lets you take the comforts of home wherever the road takes you. Flat-screen TVs and Bose surround sound come standard, and buyers can choose from color and fabric options to design their contemporary interiors.

The most popular series among women is The International Serenity Airstream travel trailer, designed to have a spa-like feel, Harlan said. It features copper accents, Corian counters and Oceanair blinds.

The Land Yacht is the most luxurious of the Airstream travel trailers, starting around $145,000 and offering designer details and upgraded amenities.

Camping and road trips may always be a popular and fun way to travel, but with luxurious options like Airstream available, many people who can afford it are opting to go glamping instead.

Harlan said there’s a five- to sixmonth waitlist for these luxury travel trailers.

How to protect natural animal habitats

Though birds or other small animals may routinely gather on your property, what if you one day looked out and saw a black bear lapping up water in your swimming pool?

That’s what happened to Cheryl Pawelski of Altadena, Calif., in the hills not far from Los Angeles, during the summer of 2013. After losing interest in the water, the bear retreated to the hills.

In early 2014, a woman in Cicero, N.Y., saw three coyotes in her backyard while taking her dogs outside for their morning walk.

And while people who live near the Florida everglades are accustomed to seeing alligators, a woman in Skyesville, Md., was surprised to find one roaming in her yard in August 2013.

Stories such as these have become more common in recent years. Urban sprawl in many areas of the country and across the globe is quickly encroaching on many natural animal habitats, and wild animals are increasingly being found in close proximity to residential neighborhoods.

Removal of trees and other habitats removes natural food sources and shelter, forcing animals to forage closer to residential areas to stay alive. This is potentially dangerous to people and animals alike.

Bear, wolves, deer, ducks and many other animals are commonly struck by motor vehicles, leaving them severely or fatally injured.

According to various insurance companies, an average of 1 million automobile accidents involving deer take place each year, and hundreds of thousands

of dollars are paid out as a result of such accidents.

In normal situations, many wild animals are content to avoid human contact and actually retreat at the sight of people. But when faced with hunger or when feeling threatened, animals may become confrontational. People can take various steps to help preserve natural habitats and prevent run-ins with animals.

• Be aware of building plans in local areas. Attend meetings to find out which areas may be impacted by new housing or commercial real estate.

Speak up if the plans seem to encroach on natural habitats.

• Join a wildlife conservation organization. Become involved in spreading the message about conservation and what can be done to protect local animals.

Without the hard work of such organizations, animals may become endangered or extinct, which nearly happened with the California condor population.

• If your home abuts on a park or conservation area, be considerate of property borders and behaviors that can impact the habitat. Do not mow past the property line or dump debris and other materials in undeveloped areas. Avoid the use of chemical pesticides and herbicides.

• Keep the yard free from food or other things that may prove irresistible to wildlife. Bear-proof garbage pails can reduce the risk of bears wandering onto your property.

• Alert conservation personnel or

Man and wildlife have been able to coexist for centuries. But as more land is consumed for building and business, animals and people are crossing paths more often, and such encounters can be dangerous.

Things to consider before buying an RV (MS) — Opportunity for adventure abounds for recreational vehicle owners. With a motor home parked in the driveway, a road trip or instant family getaway is only a few steps away.

While RVs can be rented, serious road-trippers often prefer purchasing one so that it can be customized with the desired features and always be at the ready.

You can also choose to rent one before purchasing to ensure that an RV is right for you before making such a big purchase, said Mike Harlan, general manager at Haydocy Airstream and RV, where travel trailers range from $7,000$160,000. Here are a few things prospective RV owners should know before they begin shopping.

First and foremost, drivers who have not previously owned an RV or even stepped inside of one may have an inaccurate perception of these vehicles.

Today’s recreational vehicles are much more than meets the eye, and it pays to attend an RV show to become acquainted with the various types of motor homes. This way you will be

familiar with the jargon and have a reasonable idea of what you want before going to a dealership.

There are various classes of RVs, but the largest ones tend to be the most expensive. Some RVs have an engine and are driven like a bus, while other models hitch to the back of a truck or van. If you will be towing an RV, you have consider what your vehicle can safely handle, Harlan said.

Some RVs have fixed dimensions, while others expand, either manually or electronically, pushing out walls to provide even more interior room when the RV is parked. RVs have different floor plans, and there are many different models to fit a buyer’s needs.

Many RVs are equipped with no-frills furnishings, but there are models that feature top-of-the-line appliances and fixtures.

It’s possible to get granite countertops and cherry cabinets in an RV, but such accessories can increase the cost of the vehicle considerably. Upholstered sofas and dining room banquettes may be upgraded to leather. Some RVs have an additional kitchenette built into the exterior of the unit for easy access when barbecuing or cooking at a campsite.

How you plan to use the RV should also be considered prior to purchasing one.

Will you be spending time cooking meals and sleeping inside, or will it mainly be used as a storage unit for your camping gear? Do you plan on taking extended vacations and desire all the comforts of home? Defining these goals will help you find the right RV for you.

Make sure everything works before you drive the RV off of the lot. Repairs can be expensive, and you do not want to be stuck with a lemon when you’re on the road. Find out if there are any roadside assistance packages that can be negotiated to offer you peace of mind with your first RV. The decision of whether or not to purchase an RV requires ample forethought.

Comparing a number of different models and designs and weighing personal needs can give buyers a good idea of which RV is right for them.

Boats and Cottages • Always wear a personal flotation device and never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle.

• Make sure that certified carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms are properly installed outside all sleeping areas.

• When you first enter your cottage or rental cabin, take the time to carefully inspect all appliances and electrical cords for damage from rodents or insects.

• Ensure boats, cabins and cottages are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including first-aid kits and fire extinguishers.

CO and Smoke Alarms

• Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. To prevent CO poisoning, fuel-burning equipment should only be used in wellventilated areas.

• Test each unit at least once a month because the threat doesn’t take a vacation.

• Change the batteries at least twice a year. A good routine is to change them at the same time you reset your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.

• Be sure to use the correct type of batteries.

• Follow the manufacturer’s detailed operating instructions.

Camping stoves and lanterns • Fuel-burning equipment such as stoves, lanterns and cookers should only be lit outdoors and at least 9 feet from tents, combustible materials and vehicles.

• Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages or damage.

• Keep flammable clothing (and eyebrows) away from open flames, and carefully monitor children and pets around fuel burning devices.

• Before packing up equipment, make sure it is completely turned off and cool to the touch.
