Top of the Class Annual awards honor outstanding educators

Teachers have wide-ranging responsibilities when it comes to educating students. They tie shoes. They mediate disputes. They serve as role models. And they also impart academic lessons from algebra to zoology.

Educators’ influence is significant.

During the school year, children might spend more waking hours with their teacher than their family. In recognition of the vital role they play, Columbus Parent and ThisWeek Community News are proud to again partner to present the 2018 Teachers of the Year awards.

The project, in its fifth year, recognizes three outstanding educators—one each at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

We kicked off this year’s contest by mailing letters to principals and school district communications staffers, explaining the recognition program and urging them to nominate worthy teachers.

The project also was promoted on the websites and social media pages of Parent and ThisWeek.

Nominations, which were taken online from Jan. 3 to Feb. 14, came from school districts all over Central Ohio— from students, parents, colleagues, administrators and even family members.

Our editorial staffs reviewed all of the submissions, did some independent

research and narrowed the list to 15 finalists (five per category). Readers then voted online from March 5 through April 2 to determine the winners, who were recognized at surprise awards ceremonies at their schools.

Each winner received a summer fun prize basket (which included tickets to the Columbus Clippers, gift cards and other items) as well as a framed certificate and banner.

Results originally were published in the June issue of Columbus Parent and in May 24 editions of ThisWeek Community News.

Crego Embraces First-Grade Focus Reynoldsburg teacher Rita Crego’s love of books and history led to a teaching career, but a deep love for her students led to her 2018 Teachers of the Year award.

“There are a lot of things I love about my job, but first of all, I love the kids,” said Crego, a first-grade teacher at Taylor Road Elementary School. “I love teaching little first-graders how to read and seeing them grow into independent readers throughout the year. And I love exposing them to different authors.”

Crego, 48, was selected as the elementary school winner in the Columbus Parent/ ThisWeek Community News 2018 Teachers of the Year awards. She was honored at a May 10 assembly at the school.

“I was shocked to learn I had won,” she said. “I was able to keep the tears back until I saw my husband and my mom in the audience. These are the two biggest supporters in my teaching career.”

Crego is “extremely dedicated to her students,” Principal Jamie Johnson said. “She devotes many hours outside of the school day creating experiences for them that are not only rigorous academically, but create an excitement about learning.

“Each and every child she teaches leaves her room a better person and student for having had her as their teacher,” Johnson said.

Fellow teacher Kristi Calkins, whose three children have been taught by Crego, nominated her for the award.

“Kids don’t just learn from her, they are given the base for living a life of loving learning,” Calkins wrote. “She goes above and beyond in each subject she teaches to make it relevant and fun.”

Crego has taught in Reynoldsburg schools for 25 years—the past eight at Taylor Road.

She previously spent 15 years at the former Graham Road Elementary School and two years at Slate Ridge Elementary School.

She graduated from Ohio State University in 1992 with a bachelor of science in elementary education and earned her master’s in teaching and learning from Ohio State in 2003.

“I decided to become a teacher because education was always valued in my family,”

Crego said. “My mother instilled in me the love of books. She is still my greatest supplier of children’s books for my classroom.

“My father instilled a love for math,” she said. “He can still to this day compute math facts in his head faster than any of his collegeeducated children.”

Crego and her husband, Bill, live in Mary Ann Township near Newark. They have two children, Rachel, 10, and Luke, 8.

The longtime educator said her main goal is to teach her first-graders to “love their neighbor, because this transcends any subject matter.”

“Academically, my goal is to get them reading,” she said. “I want them to gain confidence in their reading skills. In math, I want them to memorize their addition and subtraction facts. It is great to have strategies for counting things out, but that will never be as good as memorizing them.”

She also enjoys lessons on American history.

“I love teaching them about the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell and Mount Rushmore,” she said. “We also try to memorize the presidents of the United States.

This year, I had 18 students memorize them.”

The job is not without its challenges, however.

“It is hard to fit in everything you need to teach in a year and still feel like you are doing it justice,” she said. “It also is challenging to try to meet the individual needs of every student.”

Crego said mentors paved her way as an educator.

“The person I consider my greatest mentor was my first administrator, the principal at Graham Road Elementary, Mary Jane Underwood,” she said. “She hired me with no experience and just a whole lot of ideas. She taught me to work hard at my job by watching her example. She also said to ‘pick your battles’ and I always remember that when an issue arises.”

Niedermeyer Inspires Colleagues, Students

Reynoldsburg teacher Rob Niedermeyer keeps science sizzling for seventh-graders at STEM Middle at Baldwin Road Junior High School, building aquaponics systems, nurturing greenhouse plants, even incubating eggs and hatching chickens.

Niedermeyer, 38, said every project begins with a “real-life” challenge.

“My favorite part of this job is seeing what the kids create and how they solve problems,” he said. “The students dive right in and come up with some amazing solutions that show their content knowledge and solve the problem.

“My goal is to challenge them with problems they might see in the real world,” he said.

Seventh-grade language arts teacher Erin Gilbert nominated Niedermeyer for the Columbus Parent/ThisWeek Community News 2018 Teachers of the Year awards. He was selected as the middle school winner.

“Rob is not afraid to try something new and continues to keep up with popular trends and new science discoveries,” Gilbert said. “He has such a calming spirit, so students really respect him and enjoy his classes. He lets students stay after school to work on missing assignments or projects they want to complete.”

Niedermeyer was honored at an April 27 assembly at the school. The sixthgrade band performed, and students read comments about his impact on them.

Gilbert told him, “You have helped me grow so much this year, whether it is helping me with curriculum, or helping me through my day by sending me a text and asking how I’m doing.”

Middle school students are Niedermeyer’s favorite age group to teach.

“These kids are just starting to develop who they are as people,” he said. “I love their personalities. They are goofy, funny and still kids—they really crack me up.”

Niedermeyer, who is in his third year at Baldwin, teaches seventh-grade science and environmental science. He also leads the STEM Outdoor Innovation Lab (SOIL), an indoor-outdoor space aimed at helping students learn about sustainability and

growth.

Before coming to Reynoldsburg, Niedermeyer taught in Pickerington Local School District, spending two years each at Tussing Elementary School and Diley Middle School.

He and his wife, Amanda, live in east Columbus near Bexley and have an infant son, Carter.

Niedermeyer earned a bachelor of science in human ecology in 2004 from Ohio State University. He graduated from the Ashland University bachelor’s plus master’s teacher licensure program in 2009, and earned a master of science in education from Ashland in 2017.

Education was not his first career choice, however.

“Both my parents were educators, and I spent a lot of time in their schools when I was a kid,” he said. “However, I originally majored in architecture and engineering at Ohio State. Then I took a few education courses and eventually ended up changing my major to education.”

Baldwin’s interim principal, Amy Gengo, said Niedermeyer is an ideal candidate for Teachers of the Year honors.

“Rob builds positive relationships with his students, creating a safe and caring environment,” she said. “He designs creative, thought-provoking lessons that engage students and challenge them to apply their knowledge, and he makes content relevant and exciting.

“This is a very deserving recognition for Rob,” Gengo said. “I am very honored that I am able to work with teachers that possess such a great passion for teaching.”

Niedermeyer said that—like any job— the education profession is not without its difficulties.

“The biggest challenge is developing curriculum that engages every student, while challenging them at their own level,” he said. “If not planned well, projects can be fun, but very easy. Or they can be very challenging, and then the student becomes distant and not engaged.

“A lot of planning and collaboration goes into a project that meets both needs,” he said.

Kunselman Challenges Classes to Think Creatively

Building relationships with students is Michael Kunselman’s favorite part of his job as an engineering teacher and FabLab adviser at Gahanna Lincoln High School.

That positive rapport played a key role in his selection as the high school winner in the Columbus Parent/ThisWeek Community News 2018 Teachers of the Year awards.

Kunselman, 33, was honored at a May 2 award ceremony at the school.

Gahanna Lincoln junior Zach Parsons, who has had Kunselman as a teacher for three years, nominated Kunselman because he’s very helpful and allows students to show their creativity in the classroom.

“He does this through computer work and hands-on activities,” Parsons wrote.

“Mr. Kunselman helps keep our school updated and looking like new through his work in the Lincoln FabLab, where students create designs for the school and community and see them come to life all around them.”

Kunselman said he enjoys building lasting relationships with students and influencing their career paths.

“The biggest challenge is getting kids to think creatively and to treat my class less like school and more like a job,” he said.

“Students often come in with the mentality they must do whatever it takes to get an A, which halts their ability to think outside the box.”

The Pickerington native cited several people who influenced his decision to become an educator, including Pete Laihr and Ken Schneider, two of his high school teachers who taught subjects similar to what he now teaches.

“My mother was also a secondgrade teacher for 30 years in AmandaClearcreek, and I always enjoyed going to school with her,” said Kunselman, who graduated from Ohio State University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in technology education.

Kunselman, who has taught in Gahanna for three years, previously spent seven years as an engineering teacher at New Lexington High School and a year

in the same role in the Worthington City School District.

The Bexley resident and his wife, Juli, are parents of an infant son, Hayes.

Kunselman said the Teachers of the Year recognition shows him the value of the unconventional educational environment he fosters in the fabrication lab, where students learn by working with laser cutters, 3D printers, a textile lab and other technologies.

“My classroom is far from typical, and I am sometimes unsure if what I’m doing is working,” Kunselman said. “This award has substantiated my efforts and relationships I’m building with kids.”

Principal Bobby Dodd said Kunselman is one of the most innovative and passionate teachers not just at Gahanna Lincoln, but in the state of Ohio.

“I previously worked with Mike, and I knew when I came to Gahanna we needed to get Mike on our team,” Dodd said. “He does a fantastic job of facilitating his classroom and lab in a way that keeps students engaged and allowing their creativity to continue to grow daily.”

What Kunselman has done with the FabLab in the short time he has been in Gahanna is truly amazing, Dodd said.

“He has helped create a program that is well-known around the country,” he

added. “Mike and a group of students will be presenting at the National Principals Conference in Chicago this summer, sharing his teaching methods and culture of quality work with administrators.

“We are extremely proud of Mike and his dedication to our students and community,” Dodd said.

When the FabLab creates projects outside the school, Kunselman puts that money toward improving the program.

“Overall, he is a great teacher that brightens up anybody’s day that he talks to and meets,” Parsons wrote. “His students have much respect for him because of how much he cares about them.”

How to help kids learn to love reading

Reading is a passion for many people. But even avid readers may not know just how far back their love of reading stretches.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who find pleasure in reading have the potential to become lifelong readers. In addition, studies have shown that reading to children can help kids become familiar with sounds, words and language, helping them in their earliest stages of cognitive development. So adults who love books might be able to trace their passion for pageturners to those times their mothers and fathers read aloud to them as youngsters.

Parents who want to their children to learn to love reading can rely on various techniques to accomplish that goal.

• Make reading a routine. Routine is a necessity for parents, helping children learn when it’s time to eat, play and go to sleep, among other things. Parents can include reading to their children as part of their daily routines. As noted, doing so will promote language skills and cognitive development while also acclimating children to books and providing valuable time for them to bond with their parents.

• Create a distraction-free reading environment. When reading to children, parents can create an environment with little to no distractions. This allows kids to focus on their parents’ voices as well as the story they’re being told. Parents can turn off the television and the radio when reading to their kids. In addition, moms and dads should leave smartphones or tablets in another room so they aren’t distracted by alerts or tempted to check for incoming messages or emails.

• Read aloud together. Some children may shy away from reading if they struggle in their initial efforts to read.

That does not mean kids won’t ultimately enjoy reading, it just means a little more effort may be required on parents’ part to help kids overcome any issues they have. Reading aloud to children can help little ones learn how to become good readers, as they will learn how to pronounce words and form sentences. Kids who know how to read can be encouraged to read to their parents, which can instill selfesteem. If kids struggle with certain words or sentences when reading aloud, parents can read those words and/

School is often a student’s home away from home. Spending an average of six hours per day and five days a week, 10 months a year in the classroom or on campus, students may feel as though they spend more time roaming school grounds than they do relaxing at home.

Lockers can be havens for students, giving them a place to store supplies and personal items and meet up with friends each day. Organized lockers may help students handle all of their responsibilities more capably.

Developing organizational habits early on is a worthwhile lesson for students, helping them avoid tardiness and keep their assignments in order.

Students typically keep a number of items in relatively small lockers, which only makes it more challenging to stay organized. The following tips can help students stay organized this school year.

• Make the most of locker space. Space is limited, but with some additions, lockers can be that much more functional. Insert a removable shelf to double the space available. Metal shelves are preferable, but adjustable plastic ones can be effective if they aren’t overloaded.

Install adhesive hooks on the door or an inside wall of the locker to hang clothing, bags and more. Invest in hooks that can hold a lot of weight.

• Organize books by class. Keep books organized by class schedule so that books can be grabbed quickly during period changes. Put folders and notebooks with the textbooks so that all related items will be together.

with magnetic accessories to liven up the space. Dry-erase calendars, pencil/pen containers, a mirror, cubbies for notes and other tools, and magnetic picture frames are some ideas.

• Keep on top of trash. Routinely clean out the locker if things become unruly.

Tucking a small waste pail in the bottom of the locker can be handy for taming garbage. Otherwise, periodically clean your locker during after-school hours, emptying it of old assignments and taking clothes home for laundering.
