All children can experience the thrill of falling down and getting back up Children in Westerville and the surrounding area have been coming to Buckeye Gymnastics for over 30 years.

We have had the pleasure of seeing generations of children fall down and get back up as thousands have learned the basic skills on tumbling, beam, bars, rings, and all the other apparatus.

Moreland Funeral Home has served Westerville for three generations The Moreland Funeral Home was founded in 1948 by Kenneth Moreland with help from his wife, Dolores.

Xcel teaches martial arts with discipline and respect Xcel students learn traditional martial arts the way it should be taught with discipline and respect. These qualities are a little lost these days and it shows in our local news every day. This does not mean our classes are overly structured and boring. We like to keep it interesting and fun, but students can have fun without getting out of control.

Many people come to us because they want to learn self-defense and want their children to learn self-control.

Expansion at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s began in 2009 when they added interventional cardiac care with new catheterization and electrophysiology labs, as well as a larger chest pain unit. Soon the hospital will expand its heart facilities to include two cardiovascular operating rooms and a dedicated 30-bed cardiovascular unit in the new patient tower, which will open in early 2014.

Heart care an important part of nearly-complete Mount Carmel St. Ann’s expansion Mount Carmel St. Ann’s and the Westerville community have grown together for nearly three decades, continually adapting to meet the community’s healthcare needs.

But meeting those needs now and in the future requires more than just a hospital. It requires a full-service regional medical center. Mount Carmel is investing more than $120 million in new facilities and equipment to make that vision a reality, and heart care is a big part of it.

In addition to a new patient tower with orthopedic, neurosurgery and spine inpatient care units, an expansive new hospital entrance, the newly opened Bryden Bistro and a recently completed three-level parking garage, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s is expanding its cardiovascular services.

“Without services like comprehensive cardiovascular care, many Westerville residents have had to leave the community to receive the care they need,” said Dr. John Costa, a cardiologist with Mount Carmel Clinical Cardiovascular Specialists. “This project is changing all that. Now residents will be able to receive all their care right here.”

The expansion began in 2009 when St. Ann’s added interventional cardiac care with new catheterization and electrophysiology labs, as well as a larger chest pain unit.

Westerville Crew invites local high school students to join; no experience necessary Westerville Crew is a fixture of the northeast Columbus area since 1995. Matt and Trish Chase founded Westerville Crew with the help of lots of parents and rowers, growing to more than 100 high school rowers. Based on the east side of Hoover Reservoir, it provides easy access to high school students from the New Albany, Westerville, Gahanna, Big Walnut, and Olentangy school districts.

Over the years, Westerville Crew has become a nationally competitive team, with graduates being accepted to such rowing powers as Stanford, Cal Berkeley, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Northeastern, the US Naval Academy, and many other fine schools. Graduates have gone on to win medals at the US23 World Championships and to join the US Senior National Team.

As the only rowing program in the northeast sector of Columbus, no new members know how to row and so the

first step in becoming a competitive rower is to simply join. There are no cuts or tryouts. Your first day starts with the very basics and progresses from there. Every member rows in every competition (regatta). Workouts during the spring and fall seasons are on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Almost all competitions are in Ohio and travel is confined to five weeks during the spring and fall. There are no summer competitions.

Here are some of Generations Performing Arts Center offerings: Mommy and Me Classes for students ages 1-3.

Introductory classes: Creative Movement, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop. Creative Movement is designed for the new student ages 2 1/2 to 4 years old. All other introductory classes are offered for children ages 5 years and above.

Boys classes: Exclusive Boys classes are offered in Tap and Hip Hop! Recreational Training: We offer an extensive list of classes for students who love to dance for the overall benefit of dance, and want to become skilled dancers. For students who want a more serious level of training, there are the options of Ballet Allonge’ or Competitive Training.

My favorite thing about Generations is that you value and teach each girl as an important person, not just a number. I truly appreciate how you hold the girls to task, hold them accountable, and make them work hard but you do it in a loving and kind way. I am always impressed at how much Rachel has learned each time I have the chance to observe. I feel the training is wonderful. Your recital and Christmas shows are amazing.

Your values as Christians really show through and we love that! I can’t think of a better way for my daughter to spend her time. In choosing a dance studio for a younger dancer, I’d be more interested in how dance would benefit her as a person. That being said, as she gets older, it is very impressive that you train such high quality dancers that have the opportunity to travel/perform all over.

She is learning dance, but also learning valuable life lessons. The competition was our first experience and I cannot tell you how impressed I was with our dancers and your choice of costumes, appropriate choreography, and rules of conduct. I was completely shocked to see how some of the other dance studios had their girls dressed, the dance moves they used, and their attire when walking around the hallway. It was quite a contrast to Generations dancers. It made me so happy as a parent. I truly want you to know how much I appreciate you! I will support Rachel dancing with you as much and as long as she desires!

Westerville Square owners bullish on future As the renovation of Westerville Square progresses toward completion in late summer, George Hadler, CEO of The Hadler companies, shared some thoughts on the center that was built in phases from 1968-1972 by his father, William H. Hadler, who passed in 2005.

“My Dad was one of the early pioneers during the golden age of shopping centers that began in the late 1950s through the mid-1970s,” Hadler said.

“Although many new shopping centers have since been built, few enjoy the profitability of the original centers built during the golden age. Well-located centers with grocery store and general merchandise anchor tenants were so popular that owners actually enjoyed vacancies because replacement tenants were standing in line, and willing to pay higher rents and remodel the storerooms with their own money, just to get in the center.”

He had the unique opportunity to watch his father make this happen. His father used to take him along on weekend driving trips to inspect the construction of the multiple projects he was building. “He would always show me the raw land he purchased,’ said George, “and over time I would watch it become a shopping center so popular that finding an empty parking space was challenging.”

Their first centers were built as single buildings with red brick and aluminum storefronts. As retailers became stronger, they forced developers to build their storefronts with different colored brick to stand out from one another, with red, grey, white, and yellow brick. The centers were successful, but not pretty.

As shopping centers like Polaris and Easton were built, centers like Westerville Square and Northland lost anchor tenants to the newer centers, leaving big, empty spaces in the older centers. Without the anchor, the smaller stores that depended on the anchors were forced to make difficult decisions to try to stay in business because they, too, were losing the same customers that shopped at the anchors.

In recent years, everything has changed in the retail world; shopping center design standards have changed, and numerous new centers have been built. By the early 2000s, Westerville Square had lost its

anchor tenants, and was aging badly. Hadler said that it is virtually impossible to finance millions of dollars to renovate shopping centers without anchor tenants to pay rent that offsets the mortgage payments, and today it costs 4-5 times more to renovate than the original cost to build.

“We began working on our remodeling plans in 2005 and started courting replacement anchor tenants aggressively, and approached every conceivable tenant including Walmart, Target, Kroger, and regional chains like Marc’s,” he said. “The problem was that we couldn’t meet their strict criteria nor they ours. We knew we would have to present a plan that would be acceptable to Westerville’s Planning Commission according to new established criteria for new developments and redevelopments.”

“I applaud the Westerville City Planning Commission and City Council for pushing developers and existing landlords like us to improve our buildings as opportunities permit,” Hadler said. “We agree that it is important to get it right now, and for future generations of Westerville shoppers. The project is moving forward on schedule, and our company has kept all its promises to make this one of Westerville’s premier shopping centers, and

it will certainly be the nicest looking shopping center that our company owns.

“We look forward to our new working relationship with the City for years to come.

Westerville Square depends on support from the community for it’s existence, and we, in turn, look to support the community, now and in the future.

We appreciate the public’s patience during construction, and the end is near. The center will be all new, with all the landscaping and green space. That’s what we wanted all along. Watch for our grand reopening soon. It will have been worth the wait.”
