Local mother shares her thoughts on Generations We LOVE Generations! Summer classes were a nice way to get started with a short commitment to see if she liked it. (She did!) My favorite thing about Generations is that you value and teach each girl as an important person, not just a number. I truly appreciate how you hold the girls to task, hold them accountable, and make them work hard but you do it in a loving and kind way.

I am always impressed at how much Rachel has learned each time I have the chance to observe. I feel the training is wonderful. Your recital and Christmas shows are amazing.

Your values as Christians really show through and we love that! I can’t think of a better way for my daughter to spend her time. In choosing a dance studio for a younger dancer, I’d be more interested in how dance would benefit her as a person. That being said, as she gets older, it is very impressive that you train such high quality dancers that have the opportunity to travel/perform all over.

She is learning dance, but also learning valuable life lessons. The competition was our first experience and I cannot tell you how impressed I was with our dancers and your choice of costumes, appropriate choreography, and rules of conduct. I was completely shocked to see how some of the other dance studios had their girls dressed, the dance moves they used, and their attire when walking around the hallway. It was quite a contrast to Generations dancers. It made me so happy as a parent. I truly want you to know how much I appreciate you! I will support Rachel dancing with you as much and as long as she desires!

Otterbein Summer Theatre 2017: ‘Epic Imagination. Intimate Encounters’ Otterbein Summer Theatre’s 51st season is opening with a fresh vision for the future. Newly appointed Artistic Director Lenny Leibowitz is reimagining the creative possibilities for one of central Ohio’s longest-running summer theatre programs in a season he has dubbed, “Epic Imagination, Intimate Encounters.”

“We’re beginning a new chapter in our story, and entering a new era of artistic enterprise. This season we will stage two of the most captivating musicals ever written with a dynamite company of our very own Otterbein students working both onstage and behind the scenes,” Leibowitz said.

The usual three-show season will be shortened to just two to make way for renovations to the theatrical rigging system in Cowan Hall. But it will be the start of many new, exciting changes.

The season opens with “My Fair Lady,” which will feature a resourceful cast of 11, many playing multiple roles, and a radically re-imagined scenic design that places special emphasis on actor-driven ingenuity and a joyous sense of theatricality. The production runs June 1-24 in the small, on-stage seating arrangement in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall and will be directed by Leibowitz, with music direction by Lori Kay Harvey and choreography by Stella Kane.

“I love the challenge of re-envisioning a big musical in a small space,” Leibowitz said. “It can be a thrilling, exhilarating experience for audiences and artists alike to encounter a show like ‘My Fair Lady’ in a setting much more intimate than they may be accustomed to when experiencing a large-scale musical.”

The tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant woman features one of musical theatre’s greatest scores. Songs include “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “The Rain in Spain,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Get Me to the Church on Time” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.”

Full-blooded, big-hearted story-telling are front and center in the second production of the 2017 season with a terrific collaboration between playwright Neil Simon and composer Marvin Hamlisch, two audience favorites. Set in the 1970s, “They’re Playing Our Song” is a funny, romantic show about a neurotic, established composer and his relationship with a quirky young lyricist. Creative genius, passionate personalities and a strange sense of timing, keep these two birds humming as they pen the next big hit and find true love with only a few bumps in the road along the way.

Other additions will include the introduction of a staged reading series and the continued commitment to produce big plays and musicals with great stories in a way that defies expectations and transcends conventional thinking.

Season ticket packages, which will be available for sale in April, are $61 each.

Individual tickets, which go on sale beginning May 15, will be $33 each.

Opening night performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday and Friday matinees are at 2 p.m.; and all other performances begin at 8 p.m.

The Otterbein Summer Theatre Box Office will officially open on May 15. Hours are Monday-Friday, 12-4 p.m., and one hour prior to all performances. • Wash clothes in cold water. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, heating water accounts for roughly 90 percent of the energy washing machines require to clean clothes. By washing clothes exclusively in cold water, families can drastically reduce the energy their washing machines consume, and clothes will still be clean at the end of each wash cycle.

• Wash only in full loads. Whether washing clothes or washing dishes, families who want to go green together can resolve to only run their washing machines or dishwashers when both are full. The EPA notes that only doing full loads of laundry can save more than 3,400 gallons of water each year. When washing dishes, do only full loads but avoid overcrowding

the dishwasher. Overcrowding might mean some dishes are not thoroughly cleaned, which may require running another load or washing them by hand, both of which can be wasteful.

• Turn off the faucets when brushing teeth. Another way families can pitch in to conserve energy and save money together is by turning off the faucets when they brush their teeth. Parents of young children can brush their teeth with their youngsters in the morning and at night, explaining to them how brushing without the faucet running can save untold gallons of water every year. This will conserve water and lower the monthly water bill.

• Hang energy saving curtains. Energysaving curtains reduce the amount of heat that passes through windows when the weather outside is cold, keeping more warm air inside and reducing the need to hike up the thermostat. In the summertime, heat from the outside may pass through window glass easily, but it’s far more difficult for heat to pass through fabric. By hanging energy-saving curtains together with their children, parents can explain how the curtains are more than just decorative; they are also a helpful ally in protecting the planet.

Going green together as a family can help parents save money and provide a valuable teaching opportunity that can benefit youngsters and the planet for years to come.

Straub Dance Center offers excellent dance training in Westerville

Being the oldest dance center in Central Ohio gives Straub Dance Center many advantages.

Straub’s reputation is known all over the state as well as the country. Strong technique and ethics are the hallmark of their dance training; however, the business was formed because of a love of children and dance. While the majority of students ages 2-18 take classes for enjoyment, poise, confidence, strength and team spirit, Straub has trained dozens of students who have gone on to college scholarships, dance companies and professional careers. Straub is also known for tasteful and appropriate music and costumes for dancers of all ages. They have been featured in “Dance Magazine.”

Artistic director Suzy Straub has trained three NYC Rockettes and several Broadway touring company dancers. Beth Johnson, who lives in New York, just completed her ninth Broadway show, and Barbara Bednarczuk just opened her first Broadway show, “War Paint”. Other former students include: Kathleen Voss, a former Rockette and professional U.S. Tap Company member; Melody Pomeroy, a former Miss Dance of Ohio and Joffery Ballet Scholarship winner who played Ariel in Tokyo’s Disney and also appeared in “Oklahoma,” and Jill Adler, who won the USA Tap Association Top Award and tied for third place in the World Championships in Germany.

Melynda Straub Lott danced professionally (Actor’s Equity) for seven years starting at the age of 16. One of her early shows was “Pajama Game” with Randy Skinner (a Tony-nominated choreographer) as her partner. Skinner has taught several Master classes at Straub. Melynda choreographed her daughter Christy Lott’s tap routine, which won her the title of Miss Dance of Ohio.

Christy Lott Wiegand, a favorite teacher at Straub Dance Center, has been a strong performing arts teacher, winning her students many top overall

awards. Christy attended Wright State University on a scholarship that she received as a member of the Dayton Ballet Company, as well as a scholarship from Junior Miss of Ohio.

Dr. Cara Whalen, a longtime Straub student, was chosen two years in a row to attend American Ballet Theater’s workshops. She is a physical therapist at OSU and teaches both regular classes as well as a handicapped (adaptive) class for young children at Straub Dance Center.

Straub has had five state winners in Ohio’s Junior Miss (including current Junior Miss McKenzie McGrath, who is also the current Miss Dance of Ohio). McKenzie has won more than $35,000 in college scholarship money. Other Straub winners include: Melody Pomeroy, Westerville; Barbara Bednarczuk, Zanesville; Kathleen Voss, Powell; Emi Malik, Sunbury. Universities such as Point Park, Ohio University, The Ohio State University and Troy State in Alabama have all given dance scholarships to Straub students.

Nicole Gordon was given a scholarship to study in Europe while in OSU’s dance department. Straub has had top overall winners at Dance Masters of Ohio every year since 1992 and many top in the nation.

Recently, Straub had 18 dancers recognized with dance scholarship awards at the Ohio Dance Masters state convention in Cleveland.

Elizabeth Looby, a graduate of Straub Dance Center is currently teaching jazz at Ohio University.

Straub is also proud to announce two new staff members, Drew Burgess, former Mr. Dance of America and Stefanie Thomas, former professional ballet dancer.

Janet Davis, director of the Westerville Chamber of Commerce, whose daughter danced at Straub for 12 years wrote, “We are fortunate to have a dance studio of your caliber in our community. Your dancers are noticeably well-trained.”

Create a safe and enjoyable backyard play area

H

omeowners often aspire to have attractive backyards that look like they belong in a magazine. While these can be picturesque and functional for adults, they may not be entirely practical for homeowners who have young children, especially when the majority of the yard is covered with paving stones or concrete.

When young children are part of a household, homeowners may benefit by designing yards that are both functional and fun. Incorporating safe play areas for kids is one way to unlock the potential of both big and small backyards.

As children run off to enjoy a playground, safety is the last thing on their minds. Kids are most interested in scaling ladders to treehouses or coasting down slides. That’s why adults must take it upon themselves to keep injury prevention in mind.

SafestPlayground.com indicates that playground-related injuries routinely result in severe fractures, internal injuries, concussions, and dislocations. In the majority of playground injuries to children younger than age 5, the head and face are affected. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 experience more leg and arm injuries than younger kids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states 70 percent of children’s injuries occur on home playgrounds. More than 28,000 children are injured each year on playgrounds across Canada, according to Parachute, a national injury prevention organization.

When considering playground equipment for the yard, parents need to make safety a priority. The Canada Safety Society advises parents to follow the Ò5 S’s of Playground SafetyÓ: Surface, structures, site, supervision, and safety.

• Surface: Parents should assume that children will fall. To lessen the blow of falls, choose playground equipment with a perimeter of six feet of a softer surface, such as sand, pea gravel, rubber pieces or wood chips.

This material should be between six and 12 inches deep.

• Structure: The structure of the play equipment should be built from sturdy materials. Pressure-treated lumber was once the standard, but it’s not adviseable for kids’ playgrounds, as the chemicals used in the lumber can leach and young children may actually bite or pick at the wood. Use cedar or another wood that resists decay. Once the structure is built, inspect it frequently for damage.

• Site: Look around the landscape for an ideal place to locate the playset. There should be no obstacles that children can hit while sliding or swinging. Avoid overhanging branches and do not place equipment too close to trees or fencing. Try to keep the set out of direct sunlight, which can make components heat up and scald young bodies.

• Supervision: Do not leave children alone while they are playing. Prevent children from using the playset in an incorrect manner.

• Safety: Follow the directions for installation. Make sure all posts are anchored into the ground securely. Railings should be spaced so that children cannot get stuck between them. Check that metal components have not rusted and that there is no additional excessive wear. Be sure that no tools or other dangerous items are left around the yard.

Backyard playgrounds should be built with safety in mind. Learn the rules of play equipment and yard safety.

Shade-tolerant plants help complete landscapes

lants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shadetolerant plants, shrubs and trees.

Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight.

While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.

Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics.

Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space.

Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

• Heavy shade: Heavy shade is when no direct sunlight reaches a plant. This occurs at the base of northern-facing walls or beneath thick tree canopies.

• Full sun: Areas that receive full sun enjoy direct sunlight between six and eight hours per day.

• Moderate shade: These sites have reflected sunlight that may come off of water features.

• Light shade: Plants in these areas will get partially filtered or dappled sunlight.

Those who are looking for some preliminary guidance when it comes to selecting shade-tolerant shrubs, plants or trees can consult the following list.

• Bleeding heart: Bleeding heart, or Dicentra spectabilis, is typically found in woodlands. It’s a perennial in the poppy family that produces mounded foliage and arching vine-like stems of heart-shaped flowers in the spring.

• Amethyst flower: Browallia hybrids offer star-shaped blooms of blue and violet.

These plants will billow out of hanging baskets or containers, and they prefer warm shade or filtered sunlight.

• Coleus: The coleus, Solenostemon scutellarioides, is another perennial that can have a variety of different leaf colors and striations.

• Witch hazels: These are a genus in the family Hamamelidacea, which has four different species in North America.

This shrub or small tree features arching branches with dense, multi-stemmed clumps. Witch hazel produces flowers in the late autumn when most other plants are sparse.

• Bayberry: Myrica pensylvanica can grow in partial shade as a hedge or natural property divider. The leaves of this shrub are aromatic when crushed. The shrub will produce tiny, gray/white fruits in late summer.

• English Ivy: Also known as Hedera helix, this trailing plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. It will spread easily and can become invasive.

Those searching for shade-tolerant trees can choose among Sugar maple, Black alder, Flowering dogwood, and White spruce, among others.

Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises.

Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong.

Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns.

While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated.

Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive.

Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass.

Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.
