From its beginnings as a Pure Oil station that sold a few groceries, Kelly’s Market has been serving the South Side from the corner of Parsons Avenue and Williams Road for nearly 70 years! The Kelly family built the current store in 1963 and operated it until 1980, when Mr. G.M. George bought the store. The George family continues to own and operate the store today.

Kelly’s has always been known as the place to buy meats. From the beginning we have always featured custom butchered beef and pork, as well as fresh poultry, smoked meats and a large variety of packaged meats. Today the meat department is headed by Matt Devine, a lifetime South Side resident.

Jim Nichols was our Meat Manager for many years until his retirement and now assists Matt on a part time basis.

There is always a large variety of cuts in our case and you can always request anything you need from our butchers.

Ohio Dental Family Center celebrates more than 35 years and is accepting new patients When Dr. Sheldon Estreicher opened Ohio Dental more than 35 years ago; he envisioned an office that could provide a family’s dental needs from childhood to senior citizen. He also wanted the office to become a permanent fixture in the community, where families would be patients for generations.

Dr. Matthew Paulson has continued that vision into the new century. He started his career at Ohio Dental after graduating from Case Western Reserve Dental School in 1997. Dr. Paulson worked as an associate with Dr. Estreicher for three years before becoming a partner in the practice.

After Dr. E’s retirement, Dr. Paulson took the reigns, and furthered the tenants that make Ohio Dental great: treat people with kindness, provide excellent customer service and treatment plans of comprehensive dentistry. Keeping the focus on those three principles, Dr. Paulson has guided the practice through some tough economic, political and social times.

One significant person that has

helped Ohio Dental through the years is Dr. Ron Katyal. He earned his DDS degree from The Ohio State University in 2000. South Side small business owner takes pride in education

Dr. T. Ronald Sams and his wife, Barbara, saw a need for a 5-star childcare center and school on the South Side of Columbus. Ron was a full-time minister and Barbara was a working mother who needed quality, caring, educational environment for her children. Daycares were unheard of at the time. In 1972 they incorporated their business, known as Samkel Inc. d.b.a. Children’s Academy and opened the school doors in 1974. Over the next ten years, seven thousand additional square feet of school space had been built on the Obetz Road property. In 2012 another property located just east of Children’s Academy was purchased and is now the performing arts building shared with the A+ Children’s Academy Community Elementary School. Just recently, the Sams purchased three acres from the Bob Evans Corporation. This property is just west of the school and has been enclosed with a white fence and will be used as an athletic field. The school now covers eight beautiful acres; including mature trees, a pond, nature trail and five outdoor gym sets.

Dr. Sams said about the center’s purpose: “Mrs. Sams and I have always stressed that our main task is to care for your child the way we would want our own children and grandchildren cared for.”

Children’s Academy offers part time and full day programs for children 12 months to 5 years, preschool, kindergarten, and before and after school

enrichment programs for schoolage children, kindergarten through sixth grade. The creative curriculum includes goals and objectives for children’s learning in all the areas of development: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language. Through this innovative approach to childcare and early childhood development, the

children learn early that their education is essential to their success and self confidence. The school ratings by the Ohio Department of Education are “Excellent”.

Dr. Sams has been a minister in Columbus for fifty years. Seven of those years, he was the minister of the South Side Church of Christ. Dr. Sams

is a man of many talents from general contractor, farmer, small business owner and minister. His dedication to education and community service on the South Side of Columbus has been consistent since he and Barbara moved to Columbus in 1964. He has been involved in writing legislation for child care and education policies. The U.S. Senatorial Inner Circle presented Dr. Sams with the Medal of Freedom Award, the highest award the U.S. Senate can give to a citizen.

Mrs. Sams serves as the V.P. of Samkel Inc. d.b.a. Children’s Academy and V.P. of the Scioto Acedemic Management Services Co. She has served on various boards of trustees in central Ohio. Working with legislators about child care issues has always been an important concern of Mrs. Sams. One of her most noteworthy accomplishments at the national level was to see that every low income family who had a child enrolled in a day care center would be able to participate in the USDA Food Service Program. Together, Ron and Barbara have raised five children, all of which attended Marion Franklin, Wherle or Hamilton Township High Schools. Their commitment and pride of their community are rooted on the South Side of Columbus.

A+ Children’s Academy provides creative education to South Side students All students, whatever their socioeconomic, ethnocultural or linguistic background, must have opportunities to learn and to grow, both cognitively and socially. When students make personal connections to their learning, and feel secure in their learning environment, their true capacity will be realized in their achievement. A commitment to equality and inclusive instruction in the A+ Children’s Academy Community School classrooms is therefore critical to enabling all students to succeed in school, and consequently, to become productive and contributing members of society.

To create effective environments for learning, teachers pay close attention to avoid all forms of bias and stereotyping in learning activities, which can quickly alienate students and limit their learning in core subjects such as math and reading. Teachers are aware of the needs of individual students and try to provide a variety of experiences and encourage multiple perspectives, so that the diversity of the class is recognized and all students feel respected and valued. Learning activities are inclusive, providing examples and illustrations that recognize the range of experiences of students with diverse backgrounds, knowledge, skills, interests and learning styles.

Kim Lunsford, the upper elementary language arts and social studies teacher, received her Bachelors of Science in Middle School and Secondary Education. “I find teaching this inquisitive and quirky age group to be both an exciting challenge and a fun learning adventure. To see the joy on their faces when they learn a new skill is absolutely priceless and something I wouldn’t trade for the world,” she said enthusiastically. “They become my kiddos from day one and through relationship building and extensive work, we develop a family atmosphere that is very rare in today’s educational world. I can’t wait to see what the new year holds in store and what incredible adventures we can go on together.”

Scioto Community hits the mark with rehabilitation care on the South Side Scioto Community is a beautiful fullservice senior healthcare campus that is located on Obetz Road, just east of S. High St. We are the only CCRC (Continuum of Care Retirement Community) on the South Side of town. This means we offer everything from A to Z when it comes to caring for our residents, patients and families. Our services include independent living, assisted living, long-term care, dementia care, skilled nursing and both in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation.

When it comes to rehabilitation, it is hard to beat what Scioto Community offers. Our rehab unit encompasses 39 private suites, all of which have their own private bathroom with a walk-in shower. And for those rehab patients that may be with us for an extended period of time and/or find it beneficial to have a loved one at their side for added comfort, our seven transitional care suites offer 500 square feet of space. This space provides two living areas, one for our patient and the other for their loved one. Both living areas offer comfortable sleeping arrangements, flat screen televisions and tons of closet space. Plus, these suites offer a kitchenette that includes a sink, microwave, refrigerator and plenty of cabinet space.

When it’s time for your therapy, our 13 in-house therapists have got you covered! By using two large gymnasiums that house state-or-the-art equipment such as a driving simulator and

an aqua therapy unit, they’ll get you back on your feet (and back home) in no time!

Our goal is to provide our rehab patients with an upscale hotel-like

environment. Between our top notch bedside care, generous meals, healthy snacks, wireless internet and overall decor… I think you’ll agree that we hit our mark!

Children’s Academy Serves Generations On South Side Saying “Good Morning, Miss Monica” as she enters the front doors at Children’s Academy is not unfamiliar to Michelle Kyle.

She did it every day for four years from the age of 2 in 1989 until she was in kindergarten. Now, 25 years later, she is bringing her three children to Children’s Academy every day, not just for day care, but for education from an early age. Michelle remembers the arts and crafts that help the children to learn colors, shapes at the early ages. This also helps with mental awareness and memory retention, which is necessary for building good reading and math skills. She also still remembers the friends that she made in those early years that helped build her social skills, preparing her for elementary school.

“Sending my children to Children’s Academy was a no brainer.” said Michelle. “My sister will be sending her infant here in a few months. My cousin sent her children here. My whole family sent their children here. The staff is so warm and receptive.”

Michelle’s oldest child, Kaylee Lake, is 7 years old and she attended the summer day camp. “I love that she is not cooped up in the house”. The program offers a fun and safe environment for children up to the age of 12 throughout the summer until school starts. Michelle’s son, Kaden Lake, is 4 years old and attended the preschool program which is preparing him for kindergarten. Michelle also has an 11 month old infant, Koralee Bailey who she brings to Children’s Academy. “I love that my daughter is held so much throughout the day. There are never too many kids for any one teacher in any classroom at Children’s Academy”
