Chi Thai Restaurant continues support of New Albany’s youth and community! When restaurant owner, Steven Yee, moved to New Albany over 10 years ago with his family, he had a vision of opening a restaurant that would be a part of a community and not “just another place to eat .” Ten years later, Chi Thai has been in business for seven years and continues to grow each year. “I think a large part to Chi Thai’s success is the fact that we have always supported the local schools and all of the sports teams. Parents like to give back to the local businesses that support their children and youth” said owner, Steven Yee. Chi Thai is a Top 10 Best Restaurant Winner in Columbus Monthly

magazine. Its dine-in location is on 5577 North Hamilton Road in New Albany. Chi Thai is known for its exceptional quality of authentic Chinese and Thai food, as well as the value and culture that’s put into the entire Chi Thai experience. With all of these ingredients, plus catering, banquets, full bar and carry out, what’s not to like? For the past five years, Chi Thai and restaurant owner, Steven Yee, sponsors over 100 youth sports teams and 1,000 kids with not only monetary donations for team uniforms, trips and camps, but also meals, catering and more. Some of the youth sport teams included are the New Albany youth baseball teams, football and lacrosse. Yee also served as the Vice President for the New Albany Athletic Boosters, which is the organization responsible for raising money for the New Albany sports through donations and fundraisers. Yee was also a PTO member for second through fifth grade, and the middle school as well. The restaurant gives back not only the children, but also to the festivals and events within the community. Chi Thai sponsors New Albany’s July 4th parade, New Albany Founder’s Day, the spring Egg Hunt and countless organizations within the community. Yee believes it’s an important for business owners to be philanthropic and make a meaningful impact to the local community and work well with those around them. All Tails ‘R’ Waggin‘ has a new look! All Tails ‘R’ Waggin‘ has completed a recent expansion that includes a huge Doggie Daycare & Training wing, 12 Exclusive Patio Deluxe Suites, and a fantastic upscale SelfService Pet Salon. The recently opened Daycare and Training wing is a favorite amongst customers and the staff! “Everyone loves it”, Nichols exclaims. The socialization and exercise that Doggie Daycare provides is an important aspect for a wellrounded furry friend. All Tails is open for daycare every day. Going shopping, having a party, or watching the game? Drop them off at All Tails! Need Training? “We have a variety of packages for every budget and issue. Daycare equals a happy, tired pooch. Training equals a happy, relieved pet owner!” Nichols states. Their new Self Service Salon has a walk-in shower for larger breeds, 2 raised tub stations, high powered dryers and professional grooming tables. Customers are given a tote filled with towels, brushes, grooming tools and great-smelling cologne. We visited other basic “dog wash” facilities, and wanted people to have an upscale experience coming to All Tails. Don’t want to “do it yourself,” you can always call upon

their professional grooming team. Their highly qualified groomers are ready to provide your pet with a fabulous grooming experience. Compared to other kennels, All Tails has very spacious accommodations, starting at just $20 a day. The most economical lodging is their 4 ft x 14 ft run, which includes three exercise/potty breaks a day. They currently boast 30 Private Deluxe Suites that are catered to only the most spoiled pets. These are secluded away from the main kennel area, making your pet’s experience a little more home-like and quiet. You can choose one with or without a patio, but all suites come with a TV, toddler bed, window and four outdoor breaks a day. “We truly do have the best suites,” Nichols states. The owner, Renee Nichols, graduated from Ohio State in 1993, and shortly thereafter decided to follow her love of animals. She started her grooming business in late ’94, then moved to the current location and again expanded in 1999 by building the original pet care center. The following year, she designed the first “Deluxe Suites” of their kind in Ohio. Unlike the big chain facilities, she prides herself on working and running her own

Meet the team at The Diamond Studio

Children’s boutique now offering tween sizes Fourteen years ago, I went to a baby shower in New Albany, and bought a special gift from a boutique I had visited while on vacation. Everybody went nuts over it because most of the other gifts were off the registry and were not very exciting. It was at that moment that I decided to open a specialty children’s boutique on the east side of Columbus. Over the course of the last fourteen years, I have had so many wonderful experiences. We have won countless awards and honors, and we have hosted many charity fashion shows. We have started family traditions with our annual photo session with Santa and live bunnies. The only difficult part of owning a children’s boutique is that eventually all my sweet little customers grow up and

outgrow my clothes. It was for this reason that I asked my longtime friend (and customer) Pamela Romanoff to join me as a business partner. Pamela has three darling girls, one who is fourteen and a set of twins that are eleven. We decided to add a tween department, and Pamela and her girls were perfect for this! They provide a fresh perspective and a keen sense of style and taste to the store. With this vision, AveryLane was created. Thank you for your continued support over the last fourteen years, we look forward to many more. Belles & Beaux is located in Stoneridge Plaza in Gahanna, Ohio Both Kathleen Gibbons and Pamela Romanoff are New Albany residents and invite you to stop by the shop.

Study finds concierge medicine reduces hospital utilization and healthcare costs For patients hoping a better relationship with their primary care doctor will make them healthier and keep them out of the hospital, the evidence is in. A landmark new study of personalized, preventive primary care medicine finds that concierge medicine, such as that offered by Dr. Jeff Milks of Personal MD in New Albany, can significantly reduce hospital visits and medical costs. In addition, many patients say it also improves their overall quality of life. The two-year study, which appeared in the August 2014 issue of American Journal of Managed Care, explored preventive healthcare’s ability to improve patient outcomes by creating a closer, personalized physician-patient relationship and focusing on disease prevention. The study showed that patients who transitioned to a concierge-based medical practice such as Personal MD received better-managed and more preventive care, especially for chronic diseases. Moreover, the study also concluded that patients of concierge medical practices enjoyed greater healthcare savings than their counterparts in traditional primary care practices. One concierge practice model examined in the study reported $3.7 million in reduced medical costs over two years; a savings of $86.68 per patient per month in year one, and $47.03 per patient per month in year two. In addition, there was a 20% to 25% reduction in emergency room visits and a 19% decrease in the number of hospital admissions for

Quality Yard & Home Maintenance offers quality service at an affordable price My name is Jeremy Nestor. My wife and I have three daughters and live in Pataskala. We attend Eagle Rock church in Pickerington. My goal with this business is to “first Honor God with our business” and then run a successful all-around company to serve customers in a small service area including and surrounding our home town. I was born and raised in Pataskala and graduated from Watkins Memorial. I am very grateful for my family, business and what God has done in my life. Our vision: Be the best company for hire by performing quality service that customers deserve, which will lead to repeat business for both our landscape and handyman departments. We are a full service lawn, landscape and home maintenance company. We

are fully insured and licensed. We offer reliable, quality lawn, landscape and home maintenance at an affordable price. Our clients are typically homeowners and business owners who outsource all of their maintenance to our one-stop shop. Are you a homeowner or business owner who doesn’t have the time and/or knowledge to handle the maintenance of your home, yard or business? Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%.

Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard. ” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for

our lawn. Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a Theater Room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

Benefit from nutritious turkey even after Thanksgiving If turkey is not normally on your lunch or dinner menu, come the holiday season it’s bound to show up in abundance. As soon as the weather cools and the crispness of late autumn is in the air, thoughts turn to more hearty meals, and of course, the fall pièce de résistance: Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey takes center stage on many Thanksgiving dinner tables, even though history suggests it likely wasn’t served at the first Thanksgiving. Despite this historical discrepancy, turkey and all the trimmings continue to be traditional fare for big holiday dinners. Much more than just delicious and filling, turkey boasts many nutritional benefits, making it a worthwhile addition to your diet regardless of the season. • Protein: Turkey is often overshadowed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low-fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell walls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness. • Low-fat: A serving of turkey is only 161 calories and contains just four grams of fat, which is low in saturated fat. • B-vitamin benefits: Turkey is an excellent source of B vitamins, including B3, B6 and B12. Having enough B3, also known as niacin, is important for overall health, and higher levels of niacin can improve cholesterol levels and lower a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. B6 is also called pyridoxine. It’s involved in the process of making certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin and norepinephrine, which transmit signals in the brain. Impor-

Turkey is low in fat and full of protein and other nutrients, making it a worthy addition to your diet no matter the time of year. tant for neurological health, B12 helps decrease levels of homocysteine, which can contribute to cognitive decline. • Immune system effects: People may not know turkey contains selenium, which is key to healthy thyroid function. It also helps boost the immune system by playing a role in the body’s antioxidant defense system. Selenium may help eliminate free radicals in the body that would otherwise contribute to cancer risk. • Relaxation: Many people are aware of turkey’s ability to induce feelings of relaxation, particularly when eaten in abundance at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan, which plays a role in triggering production of serotonin. Serotonin can induce feelings of relaxation and sleepiness. Turkey is lean, full of essential nutrients and low in saturated fat, making it a worthy addition to your diet no matter what time of year it happens to be.

How to maintain workout routines during the holidays

Daily exercise need not fall by the wayside during the hectic holiday season.

Between decking the halls, visiting family and attending holiday parties, it may seem like there is little time to maintain a workout routine during the holiday season. While the holiday season is an especially busy time of year, men and women who plan and stay dedicated to their routines do not need to let their health fall by the wayside until January. Several studies show that people can gain anywhere from one pound to a few pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although that might not seem like a lot of weight, a report in The New England Journal of Medicine noted that many people never lose the weight they put on during the holidays. Those who struggle to keep the weight off understand the importance of maintaining both a consistent fitness schedule and healthy eating habits. This may be challenging when the rich foods and parties synonymous with the holiday season are around to threaten healthy habits. Here’s how to stay on course. • Establish a regular exercise date.

Treat exercise as any other obligation on the calendar. Make it a necessity and not a luxury. Schedule time for workouts, even if it means removing something else from your agenda. • Don’t worry about the length of your workouts. If you’re accustomed to an hourlong workout but cannot fit in more than 20 minutes on some days, don’t skip the workout simply because it’s shorter. Make the most of that time by targeting larger, core muscles. • Change your schedule. You may need to alter your daily schedule to fit in gym workouts or other exercise. Try getting up earlier and heading out prior to work or school. This will open up time throughout the rest of your day, and you can use that time to meet the demands of the holiday season. • Get a trainer or a workout buddy. It’s far easier to blow off a workout when you go it alone. However, if you have a workout partner who is counting on you

Establish a reasonable bedtime so that your child will be well-rested and ready to learn in the morning. • If your child has specific worries about the first day of school, listen to her, offer reassurance and brainstorm together for solutions; • When dropping off your child, be loving, be direct and leave promptly. Don’t say you’ll miss him; instead, say you can’t wait to hear about his day; • Visit the classroom, playground

and/or building with your child before school starts to help familiarize her with a new environment, easing any anxiety she might have; At The Goddard School, highly trained teachers nurture children into respectful, confident and joyful learners. Additionally, their F.L.EX.® Learning Program, or Fun, Learning Experience, provides child-focused, play-based lessons that encourage a lifelong love of learning. Daily extracurricular programs include American Sign Language, Yogaroo®, Musical Preludes®, Mandarin taught by a Chinese teacher as well as a biweekly music class taught by Ms. Annie Hawe for each and every preschooler.

The Goddard School® is happy to announce that they have been given approval to proceed with building two additional classrooms on the back of the building. One will provide them with a dedicated classroom/ gym for the school age children. These are the Elementary School children in Kindergarten - 5th grade. It will also provide an indoor play area for the younger children when weather does not permit going outside. The second classroom will provide more space for toddlers and/ or preschool children to help with their wait list. They welcome you to visit them at The Goddard School located in New Albany. How to make your holiday party unique Entertaining season is in full swing, and many people’s social calendars are filled with parties, dinners and family gatherings. For those serving as host or hostess, setting your event apart from others can be challenging but not impossible. Explore these ideas to breathe new life into holiday parties. • Choose a creative date. The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day tend to be the busiest of the holiday season, so think about hosting your event outside of this four-week span. A pre-Thanksgiving party or something in mid-January may be more amenable to busy guests. Parties that fall outside of the usual time period may be a welcome

change for guests who are simply stretched too thin during the heart of the holiday season. • Choose an unusual party time. Cocktail parties are the norm come the holiday season, so switch things up for your soirée. Host a brunch or luncheon, which figures to be less expensive than cocktail or dinner parties. • Invite children to the event. For a departure from the more typical adults-only holiday parties, include children in the festivities this year. Seeing the magic of the holidays through the eyes of children can add life to your party, and it can save you and your guests the cost of childcare. • Create a photo montage. Collect images of your guests from the

last year and create a slide show. Guests will likely enjoy reliving the previous 12 months and look forward to making some memories in the year to come. • Throw a party you would love to attend. Instead of thinking of ways to make your party the best or the most unique for guests, figure out your likes and what makes you comfortable. If you are relaxed and enjoying yourself, there’s a good chance that demeanor will rub off on your guests. The holiday season is littered with parties, many of which are difficult to distinguish from one another. But party hosts can take several steps to set their shindigs apart from other holiday gatherings.

New Albany Children’s Ballet Theatre creates holiday fun for the entire family This holiday season, the New Albany Children’s Ballet Theatre is creating holiday magic for the entire family to enjoy! The nonprofit arm of the prestigious New Albany Ballet Company, the New Albany Children’s Ballet Theatre (NACBT) is a 501(c) (3) organization with a mission to create an environment where children can learn the value of artistic expression. To support this mission, NACBT hosts two events during the holiday season, in addition to four performances of The Nutcracker. In 2013, NACBT raised approximately $40,000 through the support of corporate and individual sponsors, and community partners. NACBT is also a grant recipient of the Ohio Arts Council. The annual FatherDaughter Ball, in its 12th sold out year, kicks off the holiday fun Friday, Nov. 21 at Winding Hollow Country Club. The Father-Daughter Ball is an opportunity to allow and encourage fathers to participate in their daughter’s dance program while bringing a classical tradition of elegance to the NACBT season. The

event is a key fundraiser of NACBT, and provides a unique opportunity for fathers and daughters to enjoy an evening of dinner, dancing, and memory making while helping fund the NACBT mission. On the heels of the FatherDaughter Ball are four enchanting performances of The Nutcracker. Since its composition in 1892 by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker has been retold and performed on stage countless times, and plays an essential role in the magic of the holiday season. Each year, over 3,000 people from New Albany and the surrounding communities gather at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts to experience the delightful orchestral sounds, colorful costuming and graceful dancing of over 220 youth and professional dancers with the NACBT’s production of The Nutcracker. In 2014, NACBT’s performance of The Nutcracker will once again transport audiences to a world of parties and dreams on December 12 (7 p.m.), December 13 (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and December 14 (2

AimHi boasts a modern, upscale range with professional instructors As you first enter the doors of AimHi Family Firearms Center, you notice that this modern, upscale, indoor range and retail store looks nothing like what is portrayed in the movies. A family-owned business in operation for over 18 years, New Albany’s AimHi staff understands the community’s need for access to not only a place to purchase or shoot firearms, but also the need for a place to learn the basics of shooting, how to handle firearms safely. With professional instructors versed in teaching classes for new shooters, ladies, teens, people who would like to get a CCW license, and those interested in firearms for defense or fun, AimHi offers everything you need. AimHi’s professional, experienced staff will immediately put you at ease and make your visit purely enjoyable. Their clientele includes everyone from single moms to seniors and day laborers to doctors. Today we are speaking with the president of AimHi, Captain Claire Marvin. Q. Why did you decide to build a Family Firearms Center in New Albany? A. That is an easy question to answer. After spending

20 years in the Marine Corps I understood the need for a community to have a place to learn to safely handle firearms. The Marines have a saying “Nobody likes to fight, but someone has to know how.” I have modified that a little into the saying, “not everybody wants to have a firearm, but everyone should know how to make them safe.” Q. What do you mean by that? A. Here is the scenario I like to use in our beginner classes: Imagine you are at the park, having a fun picnic just relaxing there with your children, when up runs little Johnny waving around a loaded gun, that he found in the bushes. What are you going to do? As an adult you can’t just duck and run. You have a responsibility to entice that gun out of Johnny’s hands, make sure it is unloaded and if it is not, to unload it and make it safe so no one gets injured. You can’t do that if you have never touched a firearm or know how they function. Q. That scenario sounds a little scary. Could that really happen? A. Certainly, it not only could but also does more frequently than people realize.

We like to say “Firearm Safety Is No Accidents.” But it is hard to achieve that goal when there are adults out there who don’t take the time to learn how to handle a firearm safely or teach their children firearm safety. Q. So, what is AimHi’s approach to solving this problem? A. Well, it is all about education and along those lines we have developed a number of classes for people of all skill levels, ages and backgrounds. AimHi has Ladies First Shots, a fun and risqué class for women only where they learn about firearms in a laid back, friendly, fun atmosphere. We also have a First Shots Class that is coed, along with our Basic Handgun Class, which goes into a little more depth on safety, and the basics of

shooting a firearm. These are our most popular classes along with our CCW Classes that are known across the state as the best CCW classes in Ohio. Q. It sounds like you really have something for everyone. Is there anything you would like to leave our readers with before we close out the interview? A. Yes, I would like everyone to know that firearms are not the evil instruments portrayed in the media. They are tools or instruments, or whatever you wish to call them, and they are everywhere. If you have not learned firearm safety, if your parents, spouse or children have not learned firearm safety, you should consider getting some training. Just to give you an idea of how our students feel about our train-

ing, here is a short testimonial: Just wanted to thank you again for teaching the women’s gun class last night. I had such a great time and feel so much more comfortable around guns. Being a single mom, I thought it was important to learn how to handle and use a gun in case I ever have to protect my son or myself! You made the class entertaining and enjoyable. When I heard the class was three hours I was honestly a little nervous. I even thought it might be a little boring! It definitely WAS NOT! You did a great job at interacting with the students, and allowing plenty of hands on time! I look forward to your second class, and once I complete that I hope to buy my first gun! As soon as my son is old enough, he’ll be in for the kids class! I was very impressed with your professionalism and the facility! What a great time! Thanks again! Q. Just a quick follow-up question Captain Marvin. How does one go about getting this training? A. Easy, just call AimHi at (614) 939-4867 and talk to any of the staff. Email us at sales@ nasr.com or visit our website where all our classes are listed at www.NASR.com.

“Small houses” at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices are forerunners in caring for elders and rehab guests Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices is currently the largest provider of a revolutionary skilled nursing home model that is changing the way America cares for elders and rehab guests. The “small houses” are a unique concept designed to de-institutionalize traditional skilled nursing home care. Otterbein is pleased to have brought this model to Ohio and effectively meet the unique needs of seniors for long-term care and/or rehabilitation. Small houses are not designed from a hospital approach, like many nursing homes are. The neighborhood includes five small houses in a residential setting. Each small house is home to 10 residents, and each includes private suites, a large communal living room, dining and

kitchen area with home-cooked meals, a schedule that is up to the resident, and rehab care that is exceptional, all in a home-setting close to everything residents need. An Otterbein small house equals a big difference. Mechelle Wallace, an elder assistant at the Otterbein Skilled Nursing & Rehab Neighborhood in Springboro, shared her personal experience with seeing the daily difference in residents who live in these neighborhoods. She came to Otterbein from a traditional nursing home where she had to care for 20 to 30 people by herself. That was five years ago. She has fallen in love with the concept of small houses, and considers her work at Otterbein her calling. “I feel Otterbein is a bright shining

star of the future and I hope we continue to grow until there is an Otterbein small house in every city, every state,” she said. The newest skilled nursing neighborhood is located in New Albany at 6127 Harlem Road. Otterbein New Albany is now accepting applicants for long-term care. Medicare and Medicaid are both accepted. The Otterbein neighborhood in New Albany is one of two new locations in Columbus. A second location in Gahanna is set for completion in 2015. Otterbein serves more than 3,300 people annually, and is related to the East Ohio and West Ohio Conferences of the United Methodist Church. Its humble beginnings began in October 1912 when Dr. J. M. Phillippi’s bold dream of his church, the United Brethren, estab-

lishing a home for the aged and orphans materialized. Eventually, the non-profit health and human service ministry turned its sole focus on senior living. Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices currently maintains five full-service lifestyle communities (Lebanon, Cridersville, North Shore, Portage Valley and St. Marys); six skilled nursing and rehabilitation neighborhoods (Maineville, Springboro, Middletown, Monclova, Perrysburg and New Albany; with three in development in Gahanna, Union Township and Loveland); and a southwestern Ohio-based home health and hospice agency. For more info about the neighborhoods or to submit an application call Nikki at (614) 981-6854, or visit www.otterbein.org/neighborhoods.

Kitchen gift-giving made easy with personality profiles Those names on your holiday gift list are more than just people - they’re personalities. This simple shift in perspective can go a long way to help narrow down gift selections. For example, someone who likes to keep things simple might be called the Solution Seeker. Become a great gift giver by paying attention to the broader personality traits of your gift receivers. Read on for several examples of kitchen personality profiles, along with suggestions for the perfect gifts. The All-Season Foodie During the holiday season, everyone becomes some kind of foodie. From Thanksgiving through New Year’s, there is simply so much food to enjoy. However, your list of names may contain a genuine year-round gourmet Ñ the All-Season Foodie. This kind of foodie probably already owns, uses, and loves quality gourmet nonstick cookware, so consider a specialty pot or pan to round out a collection. The Anolon Nouvelle Copper 8-Quart Covered Stockpot is an ideal choice, starting with hard-anodized aluminum construction that is twice as hard as stainless steel. A layer of copper in the pot’s base further boosts and balances heat conduction throughout the entire stockpot. The All-Season Foodie on your list will utilize this large-volume stockpot for homemade stocks, broths and soups, of course. She or he can also take advantage of its size and cooking performance to prepare delicious midwinter braises and summer seafood stews. From boiling water for soup or pasta, to simmering succulent soups, stews and more, a top-quality stockpot lets any home chef cook more creatively. East Meets Best The wok is one of the oldest type of pans in the world, and one of the most efficient. First, the bowl-like shape helps distribute heat evenly. Then, like a satellite dish, the rounded side helps focus all that heat toward the center of the pan, so ingredients sear and cook more efficiently and flavors build more rapidly. In Asia, of course, wok cooking is enough of a special skill and technique to be considered an art. The All-Season Foodie on your list may already love wok cooking and Asian cuisine. Give her or him even more reason to love them (and appreciate you at the same time) with a gourmet nonstick wok. Anolon Nouvelle Copper makes a 12” Covered Wok with an elegant, high-domed stainless steel lid that helps beautifully seal heat and moisture inside. The wok’s interior also features the innovative Anolon Unity SurfaceTM with Easy Clean Rivets. This design eliminates the “speed bump” effect sometimes found in pans with exposed rivet heads, so home chefs can keep wok tools in constant motion throughout the cooking. Every home cook can appreciate top-quality gourmet nonstick cookware, so put a stockpot, wok or other specialty pan after his or her name. The All-Season Foodie is sure to make the most of its capabilities, and you’re likely to reap the benefits of their creative cooking. The Total Tea Lover Next to water, tea is the world’s most popular beverage. In the United States it runs second to coffee, but tea consumption has been on the rise here for several years running, and that trend is expected to continue. Odds

are therefore good that your gift list includes more than a few tea drinkersand probably a Total Tea Lover or two. Steeped or iced, Earl Grey or herbal, tea is ideal for them, and so is the tearelated present. The Total Tea Lover enjoys hot tea at home, at work, and anywhere else a fresh cup can be made and savored. Find the Total Tea Lover the perfect stocking stuffer with the compact, portable Teas in a PodTM Tea Infuser from BonJour. Crafted from heat-safe stainless steel and silicone, in a variety of fun, friendly colors, the reusable, pod-shaped infuser holds enough loose-leaf tea or tea blend. The silicone cap pops off and on for easy use and care. Since the Total Tea-Lover drinks tea at home, work, and anywhere else a fresh cup can be made and savored, why not give a Teas in a Pod Infuser for each location? Let the Sunrise In The Total Tea Lover is sure to appreciate a bright, new kettle with clean, modern lines. There’s no reason to call a teakettle black when you can choose among vibrant shades like elegant Capri Turquoise, classic Navy Blue, and sunny Mustard Yellow offered in the Circulon Sunrise Teakettle collection. Boiling water becomes downright joyful with these stylish kettles, featuring durable construction and an easy to clean high-gloss exterior finish. The teakettle’s well-designed squeeze-andpour handle helps keep hands and fingers away from hot steam and water. The Easy-Going Entertainer Like guests, hosts and hostesses come in a wide range of types, from the Mealtime Micromanager to the Panicking Party-Giver. That’s why everyone loves the Easy-Going Entertainer. From initial invitation to final farewell, he or she puts guests at ease, making them feel cared-for and comfortable. You’re sure to stay on their guest list with a thoughtful gift, so utilize your profiling skills for something special. The Easy-Going Entertainer always appreciates an extra serving bowl or platter, especially one with versatility and personality to spare. Consider going beyond basic white or metallics with a solid, sturdy piece that sets a tabletop, buffet or sideboard in style. Rachael Ray epitomizes the Easy-Going Entertainer, and brings that stylish sense home with her Cucina Serveware and Dinnerware collection. Durably constructed, with warm, inviting rustic-modern touches, the collection includes beautiful serving bowls, platters and dinnerware. The relaxed palette of single-color ceramic glazes and handpainted antique-look details give each piece plenty of character, with the microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe convenience you’d expect from Rachael Ray. In the Mixology Cocktails are back, although some say they never went away. The EasyGoing Entertainer always refreshes dinner and party guests in a special way, with fresh fruit and an herb garnish to perk up a simple glass of ice water, or by making one-of-a-kind drinks to order. Give the budding bartender or any entertainer more reason to celebrate, with the festive Rachael Ray 4-Piece Party Plate Set. Each of the lunch plates features a different refreshing cocktail depicted in full color against sturdy, bold white stoneware. The

actual cocktail recipes are printed on the reverse side of the plates, so the set is sure to inspire any mixologist, from beginner to experienced. When an Easy-Going Entertainer and a beautiful, durable serveware or dinnerware gift are on your list, you’re sure to be on theirs, every time. The Convenience Cook In just a few generations, the microwave evolved from new-fangled “science oven” to an appliance found in over 90 percent of U.S. households. With time, space and energy at a premium in modern life, microwaves come in handy for everything from heating water and melting butter to making popcorn and even complete meals. The frequent-microwaver on your list might be considered a Convenience Cook - someone who wants to save kitchen time and effort yet still loves food and flavor. Luckily, kitchenware has caught up to this ever-growing need for convenience, with numerous new tools, utensils and cookware made especially for microwave use. One great product that belongs in every kitchen is the SilverStone Microwave Pressure Cooker. This ingenious cooker combines the principles of an old-fashioned stovetop pressure cooker with microwave-safe design. Ideal for stews, soups and braises, the pressure cooker is versatile enough to make delicious dishes for any meal and any occasion, and comes with a booklet of easy-tofollow recipes. Getting Steamed Another ingenious kitchen tool for the Convenience Cooker on your list is the Circulon Silicone Steamer Insert. This clever, heat-safe silicone steamer stands upright for hands-free cooking prep and fits a standard size pan. The Convenience Cooker can easily move the filled steamer insert from counter to sink to pot and back again, making it perfect for healthy veggies, draining larger pasta shapes, and more. It’s even handy as a temporary fruit bowl, and collapses for convenient, spacesaving storage. Creative Convenient Cooks will quickly discover their own favorite

WORKOUT Continued from page 10 and vice versa, you may be less inclined to miss a workout, even when you’re not especially motivated to hit the gym. • Try new activities. Workouts need not be limited to exercises in the gym. Plenty of activities work the body and burn calories. Sledding, ice skating, skiing, and snowboarding are just a few winter sports that can help you stay in shape. • Choose a hotel with a pool or gym. If holiday travel is on your itinerary, select a hotel that has fitness equipment. This way you can keep up with your routine. Even swimming a few laps in an indoor pool can provide a cardiovascular workout while you’re on vacation. Remember, it only takes a two-week break from exercise to experience a fitness regression, and you will only have to work harder to get back to your current fitness level if you let exercise slide too long. • Add short, high-intensity exercises. Burn more calories in less time with high-intensity workouts. This way you won’t need to schedule as much time for

uses for this versatile, time- and spacesaving piece of kitchenware. Give them means to do so, and they’ll likely find delicious new ways to say thank you. The Solution Seeker Closely related to the cook seeking convenience is the one in constant search of solutions. The Solution Seeker on your list may be easy to spot - look for crossword and Sudoku puzzles on their smartphone and similar clues. The solution-seeking home cook craves something more than just another gadget to add to the utensil drawer, however. One gift-giving solution for this kind of cook is SilverStone CXi Ceramic Nonstick Cookware. On the cookware exteriors, bold, fresh color provides a refreshing splash of on-trend kitchen style, with color-matching handles rubberized for wrist and hand comfort. Each pot and pan in this collection features innovative, bright-white ceramic nonstick for effortless food release with easy cleanup. Practiced or beginner, the result-oriented cook is sure to love this colorful, high-performing nonstick cookware. If the solution-seeking cook also loves results-oriented baking, or if there’s simply a baker on your list in need of his or her own gift, SilverStone Hybrid Ceramic Nonstick Bakeware provides one answer. SilverStone Bakeware features cutting-edge ceramic nonstick for beautiful baked good release with quick and easy cleaning. Like its coordinating cookware, this carbon steel bakeware also comes in bright, on-trend contemporary colors to give the kitchen a fresh, friendly vibe. So take a moment to do a little personality-digging with the names on your holiday gift list, and you can easily detect their kitchen characters. From there to the perfect gift becomes as simple as matching gift and personality. For more help with kitchen gifts for all the personalities on your list, and more information about all these products, please visit anolon.com, circulon.com, cakebossbaking.com, bonjourproducts.com, and potsandpans.com.

workouts but will still get the benefit of exercise. • Transform chores into exercise opportunities. See that vacuum cleaner, rake or broom as a piece of exercise equipment. While cleaning up for holiday company, turn on the radio and get your heart pumping, too. Do leg raises while you’re preparing meals or do some pushups off of the kitchen counter. • Use your bodyweight. Even if you can’t make it to the gym, rely on your own body resistance for a thorough workout. Pushups, squats, burpees, mountain climbers, jumping rope, and lunges are some exercises that rely on bodyweight for effectiveness. • Periodically exercise during the day. If you have a few free moments here and there during the day, use these opportunities to exercise. By the end of the day, you may find you squeezed in an entire workout’s worth of exercise over the course of several 10-minute intervals. Exercise and fitness do not have to play second fiddle to other holiday activities. Make time for workouts, and you will be ahead of the game come the new year.

Going full steAm ahead! Greetings, friends! It is season seven for the New Albany Symphony Orchestra, and we couldn’t be prouder to call this fabulous community home. New Albany is fortunate to be surrounded by a vibrant arts scene that values collaboration and partnership. We are also proud that New Albany values the arts in education. In schools across the country STEM is all the rage – science, technology, engineering, and math have risen to the forefront of every curriculum. As important as this acronym is for our future, one letter seems to be mistakenly left off over and over – the A for ARTS. As we plan our programming each year, we strive for creativity and collaboration. The arts connect us all as human beings – the values of collaboration, empathy, creativity, and innovation all “stem” from the arts. If you have these tools, your life becomes full of passion for whatever it is that you are doing – and what could be more important than that? New Albany is making a commitment to the arts, and all of us at the New Albany Symphony are excited for what the future holds. We opened this season with hometown sweetheart – violinist Ariel Horowitz, who won our Student Concerto Competition in 2009. Since then, her career has

flourished, and we were thrilled to welcome her and 19-year-old composer Jake Landau to the McCoy last month in a concert that included the Capital University Chapel Choir as we celebrated the great contributions of Jewish composers and musicians. Ariel’s appearance included an in-school performance and Q&A session with over 350 New Albany students. In December, our Holiday Spectacular performance will feature New Albany Art’s Council’s new children’s choir, Center Stage Singers, in a sing-along that will put you in the holiday spirit. Don’t forget to arrive early to take part in the preconcert Holiday Gift Basket Fundraiser! In February, we will pay homage to our veterans in an All-American concert combining music and dance, and in April we will treat you to a special evening of “pairings.” Music, art and wine will be paired perfectly as you enjoy this Gala evening with friends and the fabulous musicians of the New Albany Symphony Orchestra. We invite you to think about what it is that sparks your creative side and to take the time to enjoy all that our vibrant community arts scene has to offer. Thank you for placing value on the arts and for joining us in leading the way to turn STEM into STEAM!

Local auto dealer finds sales success not seen since the ’80s In the eight years since Lash Chevrolet opened its doors in Johnstown, they’ve increased sales to levels not seen at this location since Reagan was in the White House. But how have they achieved this remarkable growth in such a competitive automotive environment? I caught up with owner Eric Lash to get his take on things. “From day one, my goal was to bring new Chevy sales back to levels from the ’70s and ’80s,” says Lash. “With a growing community around us, I knew that all we needed to do was focus on one brand, offer great prices, and really take care of our customers— a modern approach with an oldfashioned touch.” With annual sales of over 500 new Chevrolets (almost 3 times greater than their first year in business), apparently his strategy has worked. The first thing you’ll notice when you visit the lot (located on Route 62, eight miles from New Albany) is the sheer number of vehicles. From Impalas to Corvettes, Silverados to Suburbans— there is an abundance of selection. Lash explains, “In our first year of business, we usually had about 100 new Chevys on the ground at any given time. Today, through a ‘turn and earn’ allocation system, we have grown to over 200. You can’t sell what you don’t have, and earning more inventory is a daily focus. We even contact struggling

Lash Chevrolet is located on Rt 62, eight miles from New Albany, visit their website at LashChevy.com to see their current inventory. dealers and purchase their excess inventory.” In addition, Lash says that the dealership’s online strategy has also boosted sales: “We keep it simple. Customers can visit LashChevy.com to see the price of every new vehicle

with current rebates, before they even set foot on the lot. And we post several actual photos (not the usual “stock photos”) to give buyers a real feel for the specific vehicle. I think people appreciate the transparency.” The explosive growth of northeast

Columbus has also helped. “I grew up in Gahanna,” Lash says, “and it used to take 25 minutes to get to Johnstown. Today, I can leave our showroom and be in Worthington within 20 minutes. So that’s definitely helped us attract new customers. The idea is to get them to consider us. Because once they give us a try, they keep coming back.” One reason for this may be the personal touch you receive from Lash Chevrolet. Despite the newly remodeled showroom, Lash makes sure that his store retains a small-town feel: “I’ve been working at this location for over 20 years, and some employees have been here even longer. This year, salesman Larry Lane celebrates his 50th year at our location! Call me oldfashioned, but I think that kind of stuff still matters.” One step into the showroom and it was clear to me that he wasn’t exaggerating. No one ambushed me as I walked in, but a courteous salesman, named Brad, greeted me and answered all of my questions. He was low-key, yet professional. Turns out that he lives local and has worked at Lash for seven years. It was truly refreshing. So if you are looking for big city price and selection, with a small-town touch—check out LashChevy.com and then take a short eight mile drive up Route 62 off Interstate 161 to Lash Chevrolet in Johnstown.

New Albany Arts Council brings art to life in community

Way back in 1993, we were just a gleam in the eye of local resident and artist, Harold Cooper, when he gathered together a handful of art enthusiasts and formed the New Albany Arts Council with the mission of promoting an appreciation for, and, more importantly, providing actual opportunities for our residents to participate in the arts. From our humble beginnings those many years ago, we started building art programming with a summer and fall arts festival, plus a summer art camp for children. We soon added a year-round vocal chorus for teens through adults, followed by our highlyacclaimed summer musical theater program for area kids, a year-round community band, and a youth music competition. Wedged in between all that, we present two musical concerts every year, Concert on the Commons in the summer and Night Moves Concert in the fall, and proudly produced New Albany Shines for the grand opening of the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts. All of this is made possible through the dedicated work of volunteers, financial support of local business, grant opportunities from the New Albany Community Foundation and City of New Albany, and the continued support and participation of our membership. We’ve been here through it all,

watching the area grow from a sleepy Village to a vibrant City, and while the demographics and population are ever changing, our programming changes with it. In 2014 we added Broadway Beginners, a musical theater workshop for primary age children, and Center Stage Singers, a youth choral group for children ages 9 through 15. In 2015, we will be working with local artists to establish visual art programs for our vibrant artist population. No matter the programs, the love for the arts and appreciation for its positive effect on

the quality of life remain the same for our citizens. We are proud to be a major player in the New Albany community and can’t wait to see what artful “happenings” occur in our town’s future as we bring art to life ! Will you be a part of the arts in our community? Join the New Albany Arts Council today or find out more about our programs and events at www.newalbanyarts.org You might just find one that’s a perfect fit for your artistic talent!

Real Deals offers treasures for your home Granville business owner Michele Koester wants everyone to be allured by their home, wherever they live. In January 2012, Koester opened Real Deals on Home Décor in Granville, at 75 Westgate Drive (near Route 16 and Cherry Valley Road). Customers travel many miles to this “shopping destination” to find treasures for their home, especially during the holidays. Real Deals is a furniture, gift, boutique and home décor store that sells all new merchandise, though the goods here seem to have the patina of history and more interesting character than mass-produced products. It’s the way Real Deals sets itself apart. Coming into Real Deals and getting to see and touch our collection of products is like a little vacation for people

who are looking for that special something for their home,” says Koester. Items here are displayed in tableaus that allow shoppers to actually see how furniture, lamps, pillows and wall art complement one another. “We help pull the look together, whereas in a big box store you may see a row of the same picture frame or an aisle of candlesticks that are not with anything else.” Koester’s location is brimming with the bold, bright and beautiful at every glance. “We do our best to keep prices as low as possible, so you don’t have to feel married to the things in your home and can keep current with trends without the burden of high cost to do so,” said Koester. “That’s really important to us.” Therefore, she noted, the shop is located off the beaten path to keep operating costs low and is only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays creating a shopping destination. The cost savings from those careful operating decisions are reflected back to customers in the reasonable prices of Real Deals’ goods. Sometimes customers come into the store with a definite style or motif in mind, while others are a blank slate and want suggestions all along the way. Koester’s crew is there to assist at every level. Some clients email photographs of an existing space, seeking ways to spruce up, modernize or decorate for the season. “We’ll pull things together and bring it all to them. Sometimes people get mental blocks in their own homes, but we can come in with a fresh eye, and that can really help when someone is struggling with their own space.”

Tapping Real Deals product team, Koester stays up-to-date on trends through home decor vendors and their showrooms in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Dallas. Vendors certainly help to provide the leading trends but more often, she is inspired by customers’ ideas and requests. “You have to listen to what people are looking for,” said Koester. “Some people who come in are very creative.” It is fun to stage the store’s vignettes, she added, but mindful placement keeps displays interesting and inviting, yet simple for customers to picture in their own abodes. Most of what is sold can be given as tasteful gifts, and one section of

the store includes jewelry, scarves, and other bling for wearing instead of hanging on the walls. New merchandise comes in each week, so inventory changes frequently and stays on-trend. Weekly deals are offered on the shop’s Facebook site, at www.facebook.com/ GranvilleRealDeals. For those decorating a new home or a long-established one, those in need of fresh ideas to make old favorites feel modern again, or those just hoping for a colorful way usher in each new season, Real Deals is the place where one can dwell at length. “We are retail therapists,” said Koester. “We just want people to enjoy where they live.
