Holbrook & Manter’s BSST Team assisting a growing number of local business owners By Molly PensyL Business Development Manager

Now in its 95th year, Holbrook & Manter, CPAs has evolved into so much more than a place to have your taxes done or to perform your financial statement audit. A growing list of central Ohio business owners are turning to the professional services firm, with offices in Marysville, Columbus, Dublin and Marion, to assist them with the day to day obligations that go along with running a business. Holbrook & Manter’s Business Services and Solutions Team, otherwise known as BSST, are committed to lightening the load for their clients. A business that works with the BSST has a full suite of professional services to choose from. Some business owners simply want their payroll prepared or their bank deposits recorded. Others turn to the team to handle their collection efforts up to fully addressing all of their accounting needs. Others even seek assistance with new business planning and startup efforts. No matter what services they utilize, the client selects only those that they feel they need. The BSST can help a little, or a lot.

“

Anything I might need is addressed by Holbrook & Manter in a very timely manner.” — FRED NEUMEIER Benny’s Pizza

Holbrook & Manter CPAs works with all types of businesses, a host of them in the Marysville area. Business owners appreciate working with the firm’s BSST as it gives them the peace of mind in knowing that the financial aspects of their business are being handled locally, by professionals that are always available to assist them and are invested in their success. Fred Neumeier with Benny’s Pizza uses the BSST for many services and shares, “Anything I might need is addressed by Holbrook & Manter in a very timely manner.” In today’s economy, not every business is equipped to hire in-house accounting and financial staff. This is where the BSST can step in and provide expert level assistance. “We save the cost of a CFO’s salary, fringe benefits and office space,” says Nancy

Westfall of Forum Manufacturing, Inc. “Avoiding these costs really helps us control overhead. What they do for us is invaluable. We couldn’t afford to hire somebody full-time to do what they do for us.” Many businesses have some financial staff and practices in place but could use additional support. The BSST can seamlessly integrate with what a business is already doing, often times bringing a new level of expertise to the table. The BSST is comprised of Certified Public Accountants, QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisors and specialists in programs such as Peachtree. The BSST can even train in-house employees on important financial software to gain efficiencies or to better leverage the software package. Some clients enjoy having the BSST Team assist them onsite at their place of business,

while others prefer the team work remotely. Just as with the menu of services they select from, that is totally up to the business owner. Many BSST clients are looking to stay as present as possible in the day to day operations of their business, but not in the accounting aspects of it, “It’s nice to know when you walk through that door that you don’t have to worry about the financials,” says client Mike Miller. Holbrook & Manter CPAs is committed to providing all of their clients, not just those that work with the BSST, with practical ideas that will help them grow financially. They value their partnerships with

those in the community and the feeling is mutual according to Dr. Frank Raymond who retired from Marysville OB/GYN, “Holbrook & Manter is simply a great firm to work with- I would recommend them to anyone.” Call Lisa Decot at (937) 644-8175 to learn more as well as how H&M can help you grow your business.

Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) causes hardship for many Americans With the implementation of Obamacare, some Americans benefit and many are hurt. Expanding Medicaid, providing subsidies for lower income families, covering pre-existing conditions so no one can be turned down, the inclusion of maternity, pediatric dental and expanded wellness benefits – are all good things. Unfortunately, adding these benefits have skyrocketed the cost of health insurance. Many who already had coverage lost their insurance as a result of Obamacare. The equivalent Obamacare plan is sometimes 200300% more than their original plan. Another issue is that many of the carriers now offering Obamacare have narrowed their network of providers and hospitals. One of the largest hospital and doctor systems in central Ohio is not in network for the majority of the plans offered in the marketplace. Many Americans Jim Roesch that went to healthcare.gov and signed up for President, Creative Financial a plan without the help of a trusted advisor were unaware of this. Healthcare reform creates unique problems for employers With the Affordable Care Act came much confusion and unrest for employers. Ever-changing legislation, concern over the impending Employer Mandate, looming economic issues and the drastic increase in premium cost have all contributed to staffing and budget planning problems, particularly for small to medium sized businesses. 7th Annual Covered Bridge & Bluegrass Festival expands to three days, Sept. 19-21 The annual Covered Bridge and Bluegrass Festival in North Lewisburg announced the addition of Sunday to the weekend festival commemorating Union County’s historic covered bridges. The festival, which includes bluegrass and folk performers, the popular pie baking contest, arts, crafts, antiques and wagon rides runs Friday, Sept. 19 for the reservation-only Dinner on the Bridge event, Saturday, Sept. 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 21, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the festival is free, parking is $5 per vehicle and good for the entire weekend. history, children’s activities will include pony rides, demonstrations, horse drawn wagon rides, a mini farm and more. Also new for 2014 is a historical interpreter portraying covered bridge builder Reuben Partridge who lived in Marysville and built more than 125 bridges in Ohio in the 19th century. The festival takes place at the current day site of the Pottersburg Bridge Partridge built in 1868. Union County boasts four original Partridge covered bridges, plus two modern covered bridges. Visitors will be able to talk with Partridge to learn how important bridges were to communities and why the covered bridge became so popular. Local studio offers unique classes with dance, fun and fitness for all ages When most people think of dance, they think of young girls in pink tutus tip-toeing across a stage. While young girls greatly benefit from both the sport and art of dance, did you know that dance offers challenges and advantages to any person in every walk of life? For the very young child, creative movement class taken with a parent stretches both the mind and the growing body. Motor skills, both gross and fine, balance, stretch and rhythm are all encouraged in the class. While ballet teaches posture, strength and balance, did you know that tap helps improve a person’s memory? Tap dancing, with its rhythm and repetition, creates intricate footwork patterns that must be memorized by the performer. This strengthens the studentÕs mind, which pays off not only in the dance studio but also the classroom. Dance is for boys too! Male presence

Revitalize fundraising efforts through charitable gaming partnerships with bars and other local businesses It has been just over two years since the Governor signed HB 386, allowing bars and other businesses in Ohio to sell instant bingo tickets (pull tabs) for charities and receive up to 6% of the gross receipts of the game, much like the Lottery program. One of the biggest challenges has been getting the word out that this is a profitable way to fundraise without adding additional volunteers. With the State’s changing mindset on gaming and adding Lottery, Casinos and Racinos, many charities are embracing this concept as a new funding source to meet the increased demands on their organizations from their communities. For both charities and bars, getting started with selling instant tickets can be a learning experience and many have turned to All-Star Gaming (ASG) for help. Two of the biggest names in charitable gaming, Lancaster Bingo Company and Nannicola, Inc. have teamed up to form ASG for the specific purpose of bringing bars and charities together.

“

The ASG program makes it all very easy, says Sims. Charities get their profits from the bars upfront, so there is no waiting on payment or tracking down money.” — WES SIMS Charity Organizer

ASG helps to simplify the complexity of State regulations, streamline the process of requesting product and paying the bars & businesses. ASG has set up a system that allows bars to request product from their partnered charity utilizing a 24/7 website (www. charitypulltabs.com) and then have product delivered directly to their door. Charities in the ASG program are benefiting from having multiple bars and businesses selling on their behalf. Many have seen an increase in their fundraising profits without having to add volunteers. Charity organizer Wes Sims of the Lancaster Police Athletic

League in Lancaster, Ohio says that since joining the ASG program last year, his charity has seen profits of over $65,000. The ASG program makes it all very easy, says Sims. Charities get their profits from the bars upfront, so there is no waiting on payment or tracking down money. How profitable is it for bars to sell pull tabs on behalf of charities? In the last 18 months, Ohio bars and businesses have received over $1,100,000 through the ASG program. David George, President of the Ohio Coin Machine Association and President of Akron-based Bell Music, says it can be very profitable.

Some businesses require a lot of support tools . . .

According to George, “The bars that are embracing the best practices for selling pull tabs are doing well. Those that are having the greatest success have a few things in common. They promote pull tabs and incorporate fun and winning into their bar cultures and involve their wait staff and bartenders in getting patrons excited about the games.” Besides the obvious benefit of increased cash flow, bars and businesses are seeing other benefits as well. These include: • Increased loyalty. Patrons love winning and winning creates loyalty. • Increased spend. Prizes are paid only at the location that sold the ticket, which means it is spent there also. • Making a positive impact in their communities. Money stays local and benefits a charity in their county. Some bars have been slower to take advantage of the 2012 legislation citing concerns that selling pull tabs will take away from money spent on other

types of games they might offer. When asked about this concern, George says he has heard this concern too, but offers reassurance that his members are experiencing just the opposite. Charitable gaming partnerships are good for charities and bars & businesses. In this day and age when charities have a tough time finding volunteers, charities and their Board members are remiss in not seriously considering a charitable gaming partnership. Bars too benefit from the opportunity to build another revenue stream, offer something new and exciting for patrons, and differentiate themselves. If you are associated with a charity in Union County and are looking for ways to increase your fundraising dollars, look for our ad in this publication and give ASG a call at (855) 772-4646. We currently have four (4) bars/businesses in Union County that are ready to sell pull tabs and are just looking for a charity with which to partner.
