At 6 p.m. the parade awards are being announced and the trophies awarded in Hilliard’s Station Park.

Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park is featuring live entertainment by Lt. Dan’s New Legs. They play a mixture of soul, funk and R&B combined with both current and timeless rock. A perfect blend of music and energy! They promise to bring excitement and first class musicianship to Hilliard’s 4th of July. The band begins playing at 6 p.m. on the amphitheater stage. Lt. Dan’s New Legs Band is sponsored by the City of Hilliard, Beer Barrel Pizza and the Hilliard Arts Council.

The Recreation and Parks Department is putting on a 30-minute fireworks display accompanied by a soundtrack with family-appropriate music. The fireworks show starts at dusk in Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park.

The Hilliard Family Aquatic Center is open until 9 p.m. and Hilliard East Pool is open until 8 p.m. on July 4.

Be aware of ticks when enjoying the outdoors When the weather warms, yards beckon, hiking trails look even more inviting and even a patch of grass can be a welcoming respite. Lots of fun can be had outside, but caution is needed. While this time of year is prime for outdoor frolicking, it’s also a time when tick populations explode.

Ticks are small crawling bugs in the arachnid (spider) family. There are hundreds of different kinds of ticks in the world.

The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation says there are at least 40 species of tick in Canada alone. The creature subsists on meals of blood from a host animal.

Ticks can carry bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that can cause serious disease in humans and other animals, states LymeDisease.org. Ticks feed and mate mostly on deer, but rodents, birds, lizards, and just about any other animal can be a host to these nondiscriminatory bugs. Animals carry the diseases, which are then passed through the tick to others.

Disease-spreading ticks can be extremely hard to detect because of their diminutive size, especially when they are in the larva or nymph stages. Therefore, preventing tick bites remains the single-best way to stay ahead of Lyme disease and other illnesses.

Understanding tick habitats and behavior can make it easier to avoid them.

Where to find ticks

Ticks will congregate anywhere the animals they feed upon live. Primarily they are located in wooded and grassy areas.

Adults will climb up on tall grass waiting for an animal to pass by so they can climb aboard. Nymphs and larvae will live in layers of decomposing leaves under trees.

Moisture is a friend to ticks, which are less active in sunny, dry areas. Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says removing leaf litter, clearing tall grasses and brush and mowing the lawn frequently can help. The following are additional ways to create tick-safe zones at home.

• Stack wood neatly in a dry area.

• Keep playground equipment and entertaining spaces away from trees and yard edges.

• Discourage unwanted animals with fencing.

• Prevent tick migration into yards with a three-foot-wide barrier of gravel between lawns and wooded areas.

Wearing long pants and sleeves and tall socks can discourage ticks from latching on when people are enjoying the outdoors.

• If desired, employ acaricides (tick pesticides) to reduce the number of ticks in your yard.

On the go

When enjoying the great outdoors, avoid tall grasses and stay on trails. Wear tall socks or pants during hikes to prevent ticks from latching on. A thorough inspection of the body is advisable each time people return indoors. Check hidden areas, such as behind the knees, under the arms and in other skin-fold areas, for ticks.

Tick populations grow as the weather warms. Ensure spring and summer fun is not dampened by tick-related illness.

Did you know?

Ticks spread Lyme disease to people and other animals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that, in humans, untreated Lyme disease can create an array of symptoms, depending on the stage of infection. Anyone who has spent time outdoors should be aware of the potential symptoms, which can include fever, rash (classic erethema migrans rash, also called “bull’s-eye rash”), facial paralysis, and arthritis. Some people with later stage Lyme disease may have rashes on other areas of their bodies; intermittent pain in tendons, muscles and bones; and experience heart palpitations. LymeDisease.org states that not every person suffering from Lyme disease will develop the same symptoms. The distinctive rash occurs in less than 10 percent of those who contact Lyme. If a tick bite is verified, promptly contact a physician.

Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

OhioHealth to open emergency department to address growing need In September, OhioHealth will open a freestanding emergency department in Hilliard. Construction on the 8,000-square-foot building began late last year on the northwest corner of Fishinger Road and Ridge Mill Drive.

A freestanding emergency department (FSED) is an emergency department that is not physically attached to a hospital.

“It will be a full-service emergency department, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and will be staffed with physicians specializing in emergency care,” said Mark Foran, MD, MPH, senior medical director of ambulatory care for OhioHealth. “Most patients will be treated and released and will not require transfer to a hospital.”

This FSED will contain eight bays for patient care. Additional features include imaging (CT, X-ray and ultrasound), as well as laboratory and pharmacy services.

Creating more access points for emergency care Hospital-based emergency departments around central Ohio are busier than ever.

This increase in emergency department volumes can partially be attributed to the aging population.

“Hospital emergency departments, both locally and nationally, are running at or above capacity with long wait times,” Foran said. “This can cause patient frustration and departures before receiving care. We are working to improve access for patients by bringing emergency care into the community and reducing wait times.”

I think it’s a win-win situation for both OhioHealth and our patients.”

Following up emergency visits with primary care FSEDs help to broaden options for emergency care and can handle any medical emergency that a hospital-based ED can handle. Anyone experiencing a life-threatening situation should call 911 for immediate assistance. If the situation is not-life threatening, but still requires emergency care, patients should go to whichever emergency care location is closest to them at that moment.

After an emergency visit, patients often require follow up care with their primary care physician. With both emergency care and primary care in the Hilliard community, OhioHealth can more effectively manage patients’ access to follow up care, hopefully avoiding future hospital stays.

“OhioHealth has primary care physicians in Hilliard, just over a mile and a half away from the future FSED location,” said McManmon. “Our goal is to prevent patients from ever needing to be in the hospital. If they have easy access to primary care for follow-ups after their emergency visit, they are less likely to need a hospital stay later on down the line. We’ll make this follow-up care easy by contacting the patients’ primary care physician to inform them that their patient has visited the FSED when the patient is either transferred for inpatient care or discharged from the FSED.”

Once open, those who live and work in and around Hilliard will have access to OhioHealth primary care, urgent care and emergency care, all within a few miles of each other. However, it is important to note that these services are not interchangeable. Curious about when and where to go?
