Diley Ridge celebrates its fifth anniversary, long-term impact The partnership between Mount Carmel Health System and Fairfield Medical Center that produced Diley Ridge Medical Center is officially five years old. And while that may not seem like a major milestone, it is when you think about what all Diley Ridge has come to mean to Pickerington, Canal Winchester, Lancaster and the rest of northern Fairfield County in that short period of time. It’s meant more than having a free-standing, full-service, 24-hour emergency department and diagnostic center in the community. It’s meant more than adding the services of a full clinical laboratory, state-of-the-art imaging center and women’s health center, too. It’s meant more than welcoming the variety of primary care and specialty physicians who practice at the campus’ 46,000-square-foot medical office building. It’s even meant more than adding the pediatric urgent care services provided at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Close to Home Center. “What it’s really meant is access,” said Diley Ridge Medical Center President & COO Jodi Wilson. “Not just access to exceptional care, but access to that care where our patients live. Liv-
ing away from the city shouldn’t mean giving up access to the care that’s available there. Diley Ridge has provided that access 24 hours a day for five years now.” “We’ve been a real model for how competitors can come together and use what each does best to create something truly special,” Wilson added, “and that’s what Diley Ridge is.” The quality of the facilities and the array of services aren’t the only things that have made Diley Ridge special. The people have played a tremendous role as well. The board-certified emergency medicine physicians, nurses, technicians and support associates aren’t just serving the community. They’re part of the community. “Our associates are so special,” Wilson said proudly. “They’re from the community and take pride in taking care of the community. It’s personal for them, because their next patient could be their neighbor or their son or daughter’s soccer coach.” Being so close to Pickerington, Groveport, Canal Winchester, Carroll, Baltimore and Violet Township has had an impact on local EMS as well. Since they can take their emergency patients to Diley Ridge instead of the Columbus hospitals, they’re back in their communities far faster, helping more people in the process. Speaking of helping more people, Diley Ridge has made ease of patient access a priority as well, embracing technologies that improve patient interactions and experiences. One of those tools is iTriage. It’s a free app that helps patients take charge of their health and make better, more informed decisions about their care. Created by emergency room physicians and reviewed by Harvard Medical School, iTriage can walk patients

through a Symptom Checker that can help quickly determine what may be wrong. In addition to checking symptoms and conditions, iTriage allows them to look up procedures and medications as well. For patients who are coming to Diley Ridge, the app can let the ER know they’re on the way, too. The check-in tool, which has an “I’m On My Way” button, allows patients to fill out, click and submit a simple form that will notify the staff so they know when to be ready and how to make patients’ trips to Diley Ridge even more beneficial. iTriage is available as a free download for iPhone™, iPad™ and Android™ devices and is accessible from any computer at www.iTriageHealth.com. Diley Ridge also has made communication easier with online tools. Patients have access to MyDileyRidge, the center’s online patient portal. It’s a secure website that allows patients to access their medical information 24 hours a day, seven days a week and privately view lab and radiology results, portions of their medical record, discharge instructions and more. It’s free to use, simple to sign-up and completely secure. Patients can enroll in MyDileyRidge at registration. “Providing exceptional care means giving patients more ways to manage and customize their experience outside the care setting,” said Wilson. “These
tools and technologies are allowing them to do just that while making the time they do spend here more valuable.” Thankfully patients spend most of their time away from Diley Ridge. But that hasn’t stopped the center from interacting with them where they are. Diley Ridge is an active member of the community and a proud sponsor of a number of popular events, including the Pickerington Chamber Annual Dinner and Awards Reception; the Diley Ridge Downtown Dash 5K at the Mount Carmel Pickerington Violet Festival; the Canal Winchester Blues and Ribs Fest and Labor Day Festival; the Canal Winchester Area Chamber of Commerce; the Freshman 101, Success and Football for Food programs in the Canal Winchester Local Schools; the renowned Lancaster Festival; and many, many more. Taken together, these facilities, people, technologies and programs have made Diley Ridge an integral and well-received member of the community in just five short years. “We were an unknown entity when we started out, but we’re so pleased with the reputation we’ve earned in such a short time,” said Wilson. “We’re here to care for the community and for our patients. I think we’ve shown that, and our patient satisfaction scores suggest our neighbors agree.”

How to make grilling more eco-friendly Few things can beat a relaxing evening spent in the yard gathered around the grill in the company of friends and family. Cooking food over an open fire dates back centuries. Despite the various modern means of cooking food, the combination of a metal grill and some flames remains one of the more tasty ways to prepare meals. Grilling is a relatively easy concept to master, but environmentalists may question if firing up the barbecue is a smart choice. Rest assured that while the environmental impact of grilling is negligible, there still are ways to make it even more eco-friendly. Grilling purists may prefer charcoal to gas, feeling charcoal more effectively produces that familiar smoky flavor, but environmental experts say that gas grills may be better for the environment. A study by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy found that gas grills generate 5.6 pounds of carbon dioxide per hour, while charcoal grills produce 11 pounds per hour. Furthermore, the charcoal briquettes used on many grills are made from more than just coal. They may contain wood byproducts, starch, chemical additives and lighter fluid.
For those who insist on charcoal, use natural lump charcoal, which is made from coal and little else. Another step to take is to invest in a quality grill. Replacing a cheap grill every few years can be harmful to the environment, especially when you consider how many components go into the construction of a grill and the packaging required for shipping long distances. Quality products last longer, and that durability benefits the planet. In addition to buying a better grill, you must take good care of the grill and maintain it so it works optimally. In certain ways, grilling is already an eco-friendly activity, as it doesn’t lend well to prepackaged foods and it enables you to turn off the stove while reducing your electricity consumption. In some instances, you may not even need to fire up the barbecue at all. If you’re spending the evening by a chiminea or a fire pit, you can skewer a couple of hot dogs and cook them right over the flames. Do not offset the benefits of grilling by creating a bigger environmental hazard in meal preparation and service. Minimize the use of disposable plates, napkins, cups and plastic cutlery at your backyard event. Rather than single-serve cans of soda or iced tea, use large pitchers or bulk-sized containers. Insist guests discard all recyclable materials in the proper recycling receptacles. Promptly wrapping up leftovers is another way to make grilling even greener. Refrigerating foods means you will have good meals for the rest of the week and will minimize spoiled food that would otherwise end up in the garbage. When shopping for foods to toss on the barbie, choose locally grown foods and sustainably raised and harvested meats and poultry. Serve generous portions of locally produced vegetables to stretch food even further. Grilling is a great way to cook in an eco-friendly way if you make a few changes for the better.
Learn the ways to make grilling an even more environmentally friendly way to cook.
How to enjoy this year’s staycation Recovery from the recession that began in 2008 has sparked renewed interest in vacation travel. Resort bookings are up, and millions will enjoy exotic vacations in the months to come. While discretionary spending is increasing, some individuals and families continue to take a conservative approach to their finances, and that approach extends to how they spend their time off. Many are still embracing “staycations,” in which families forgo travel in favor of staying home. Staycations may not be as exotic as trips abroad, but there are several ways that families can make their staycations enjoyable and memorable. • Invest in your home or lifestyle. Instead of bankrolling a trip overseas, channel those funds into improvements for your home or yard to create a relaxing atmosphere you can enjoy year-round. Install that pool or landscape the backyard to make it feel like a tropical paradise. Coasting across the water of a lake or ocean is an enjoyable pastime, so repurpose your vacation funds to buy a boat or some jet skis that you can enjoy throughout the warmer months. • Become a tourist in your hometown. Chances are you have never experienced the sights of your hometown the way a tourist might. Plan a few
days when you can act like someone visiting your town or city for the first time. Go to the top of that tallest mountain or get a tour of that local factory. Seek out and visit monuments and points of history in your community. Vacations often entail eating out, especially if meals are not included in a traditional vacation package. Use your staycation as the opportunity to dine at local restaurants you have yet to visit. Indulge the kids one night and put them in charge of choosing the meals. Forget those diet plans for a day or two and savor that triple-scoop ice cream cone. If the cost of dining out has you concerned, select restaurants that offer coupons in community mailers or value packs. • Read the newspaper or community bulletin. Its classrooms are safe, nurturing environments for children six weeks to six years, offering age-appropriate opportunities to explore and discover. At The Goddard School, every family enjoys a warm, positive experience. “We strive to provide the best quality program for each child,” says Eric Park, on-site owner of The Goddard School located in Canal Winchester, OH. “Our play-based F.L.EX.® Learning Program ensures that we meet high standards specific to early learning, development and care.” The F.L.EX.® Learning Program (Fun Learning Experience) is grounded in research on how children learn best: children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun. It’s designed to help build each child’s emotional, academic, social, creative and physical skills— including 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking (4Cs)— to provide a well-rounded experience and ensure each one becomes confident, joyful
and fully prepared in school and in life. “The Goddard School has become the first preschool program to join The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21), a national organization championing 21st century skills,” explains Eric. “Children at The Goddard Schools located in Canal Winchester not only learn the 4Cs, but also executive function skills, which include planning, organizing and strategizing.” 21st century skills also tie in directly with STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Introducing STEAM concepts early on helps to promote children’s natural curiosity in STEAM, increasing the chance that children will pursue STEAMrelated careers later on in life. “Supporting STEAM learning at the preschool level involves identifying activities children naturally do for opportunities to further guide them,” says Eric. “At The Goddard School, when children solve puzzles or play with blocks, they essentially create pathways in their brains that help with STEAM learning later on.”
Another essential aspect of The Goddard School is the importance of safety. Nothing is more crucial than the health and safety of children. That’s why, at The Goddard School, their security is the highest priority. From every detail of
the classroom and playground designs to the high standards of cleanliness—every base is covered. Diligent hiring practices ensure that the best people are hired, and the teachers are thoroughly trained in safety and wellness

Parents can take several steps to make sure school day mornings go more smoothly.
Make school day mornings easier School day mornings can be hectic, as getting kids ready for school and out the door on time is not always easy. Working parents may find school day mornings especially difficult, as their own work schedules can make mornings feel even more rushed. Fortunately, parents can employ several strategies to free up time in the morning so everyone starts their days off in a more relaxing atmosphere. • Wake up earlier. Sleep might seem like a precious commodity, but waking up just 10 to 15 minutes earlier can remove some of the stress from weekday mornings without costing you a lot of sack time. Let kids sleep in until their normal wakeup time, using your extra 10 or 15 minutes to shower or enjoy your morning cup of coffee before the house is abuzz with activity. • Tackle certain chores the night before. Delaying certain chores until you wake up makes for a hectic morning, so tackle as many morning chores as possible before you go to bed for the night. Prepare school lunches, lay clothes out for yourself and your children, and make sure kids have their backpacks packed and ready to go before they go to bed. Each of these things may only take a few minutes, but when left for the morning, they can add up to a substantial amount of time.
• Encourage youngsters to pick up the pace. Some people are morning people, while others dread setting their alarms for early morning hours. Kids who fall into the latter group may drag their feet in the morning, but parents should offer encouragement when kids are moving slowly in the morning. Allowing your frustration to show may only make kids less fond of mornings, so remind them as nicely as possible that everyone has a schedule to stick to if they seem to be dragging their feet. • Keep the television off. If watching the television is ingrained in your morning routine, try going a few days without it to see if this makes it easier to get out the door on time. Kids might grow distracted by morning cartoons, and even adults may get caught up in morning news shows or other forecasts. Eliminating television from your morning routine can save time and also may help your family grow closer, as you will have more distraction-free time to speak to one another. In addition to turning off the television, resist the urge to turn on your devices or scan work emails when getting ready in the morning. Parents know that school day mornings can be hectic. But there are several ways to make such mornings go more smoothly so everyone gets where they need to be on time.

Schedule visits to the doctor, dentist and an eye doctor so your child is up-todate upon the dawn of a new school year.
Add health screenings to back-to-school checklist As summer vacation winds down, thoughts turn from jaunts to the beach to readying for a new school year. To-do lists include many of the typical tasks that precede going back to the classroom, including shopping for new clothes, purchasing school supplies and finishing summer reading assignments. Another essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school. Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school. Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year. While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons. For a list of state vaccination requirements and possible exemptions for schools in the United States, visit www2a.cdc.gov/nip/ schoolsurv/schImmRqmt.asp. Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentation from any therapists or specialists prior
to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file. Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of vision problems that could already have been addressed. Parents of adolescents or students on the verge of adolescence may want to address the subject of bodily changes before the school year begins anew. Address which changes can be expected, including the start of menstruation for girls. This will help children better understand what is happening when they witness changes in themselves and fellow classmates and give them a chance to receive accurate information rather than gossip from their peers. Keep in mind that health screenings conducted in advance of the school year may not preclude students from school-sponsored screenings. Schools may offer their own vision and hearing screenings and may take physical measurements to ensure students are growing on schedules in line with normal development.

Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%.
Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard. ” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for our lawn.
Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a Theater Room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

How to unplug from your devices The prevalence of technology is undeniable. According to data from the Pew Research Center, as of October 2014, 64 percent of Americans owned a smartphone. In January of the same year, 42 percent of Americans owned a tablet computer while 32 percent owned an e-reader. While technology can be convenient, many people find themselves spending more time on their devices than they might prefer. Overexposure to communications technology can be detrimental to kids and adults, and some parents might be surprised to learn just how much time their youngsters are spending using different forms of media. A 2010 survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that kids spend more than seven hours per day using various forms of media. That’s especially disconcerting when considering the American Academy of Pediatrics says that overexposure to media can increase kids’ risk
of aggressive behavior and interest in alcohol and smoking, and lead to poor performance in school. So how can families who have grown accustomed to using their devices find ways to unplug? The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to reduce the amount of time they’re spending on their smartphones, tablets and laptops. • Start monitoring usage. Realizing just how much time you spend on your various devices is a great first step toward unplugging. As you go about your day, jot down each and every time you use any of your devices and what you are doing while using them, and ask family members to do the same. Do so for roughly one week, which should be ample time to provide an adequate picture of how much time you’re spending on your devices and what you are using them for. Don’t beat yourself up if the numbers shock you, just resolve to lower those numbers and continue
to monitor your device usage as you do so. • Cut out the media junk food. As you examine your device
How to save on school supplies Back to school season can be as expensive for parents as it is exciting for students. Once the initial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite subjects and participate in extracurricular activities. Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. Fortunately, there are several ways parents can do just that. • Be patient. Shopping early can save shoppers money in many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of supplies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won’t need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might email lists to parents before back to school season hits full swing. • Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward, encourage kids
to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year’s inventory that much easier to examine and assess. • Spend more now to save later. While inexpensive supplies can be hard to resist, such items likely won’t withstand the test of time, forcing you to spend time and money each year buying replacement supplies. Paying more now for certain items, including stronger backpacks and more highly rated calculators, may end up saving you money in the long run, even if the initial pill is somewhat tough to swallow. • Use technology to your advantage. Department stores and businesses that sell school supplies, such as pharmacies and office stores, may or may not discount too many items once back to school season hits full swing. But savvy parents can still find deals by using technology to their advantage when shopping for school supplies. Download apps like RetailMeNot to your smartphone and enable its updates so your phone essentially notifies you of any discounts the moment you walk into a given store. If you don’t receive any updates, search for discounts via the app or the Internet as you shop. Chances are strong that there are deals to be had, even if you don’t learn of the deals until you arrive at the store. School supplies can be expensive, but parents can employ several strategies to save on school supplies now and in the future.
usage, you may notice you are spending lots of time on fruitless activities, whether it’s catching up on the latest Internet gossip or scanning friends’ social media pages to pass the time. Eliminating these activities from your day is unlikely to have an adverse affect on your life, and you will find yourself with more time to enjoy more unplugged time with family and friends. • Schedule your media time. Many of today’s adults grew up in homes where their parents
restricted the time they were allowed to spend watching television. Today’s parents can take a similar approach by limiting the amount of time their kids spend on their devices while also placing the same restrictions on themselves. Allow yourself a certain amount of time each day to spend on your devices, even scheduling times each day when you will watch some television or catch up with friends on social media. Stick to this schedule and you will likely see your device
usage decrease dramatically. • Recharge devices outside of your bedroom. Many adults can’t resist the urge to scan work emails or social media right before going to bed, and that can increase device usage and have a negative impact on sleep. When plugging devices in at night, be sure to charge them outside of your bedroom so you aren’t tempted to indulge in some extra and unnecessary usage at the end of the day.
