Find a safe, supportive environment at The Village at Westerville
Wide range of services includes respite, independent and assisted living We’re proud to say we’ve been keeping seniors young at heart for over 30 years. The Village at Westerville Retirement Center offers residents the luxury of aging in place through options like independent living, independent living with assistance, and assisted living. We also offer short-term respite and hospice stays. In both independent and assisted living, we provide our residents with three restaurant-style meals per day, weekly housekeeping and linen service, free transportation and a wide variety of social and cultural events. Independent living offers a safe, supportive alternative to living alone. Opportunities for making new friends and engaging in an active, vibrant lifestyle abound. Independent living with assistance is for those who are still fairly independent but who may need help with bathing, dressing, medication and other activities of daily living. These residents can extend their stay in independent living and have extra services provided to them on an a la carte basis by ComForcare Senior Services, a premier provider of non-medical home care services. And unlike some centers, our assisted living nurses are available 24 hours per day to respond to the emergency needs of independent living residents. Assisted living provides personal care and nursing services, including assistance with dining, bathing, dressing, walking, grooming and personal hygiene. In contrast to other centers, these services are offered without additional

The Village is part of HCR-ManorCare, one of the country’s largest providers of skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, assisted living facilities, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, hospice and home health care services. HCRManorCare’s skilled nursing center, Heartland of Westerville, located on the same campus, offers short and longterm health care options. Our affordable monthly rental package allows for flexibility without expensive commitments. Most services and amenities are included in one reasonable monthly payment. Generations’ Mission
In 1999, Generations opened in beautiful and convenient Uptown Westerville with this mission: “Generations is dedicated to nurturing the child’s spirit through the art of dance!” • educating through discipline, teamwork, socialization, cooperation and Judeo-Christian Principles • self-assurance through goal setting and consistent progress • instilling confidence and self esteem • making every child feel special

Great Uptown Westerville location
Why uptown Westerville? At their first meeting with parents in 1999, it was asked, “What do you look for in a location?” The answers included: spacious, convenient, safety, parking, clean facility, something to do while the children are in class, and food nearby for those who dance long hours. That is why Generations made their home in Uptown Westerville

Local mother shares her thoughts on Generations We LOVE Generations! Summer classes were a nice way to get started with a short commitment to see if she liked it. (She did!) My favorite thing about Generations is that you value and teach each girl as an important person, not just a number. I truly appreciate how you hold the girls to task, hold them accountable, and make them work hard but you do it in a loving and kind way. I am always impressed at how much Rachel has learned each time I have the chance to observe. I feel the training is wonderful. Your recital and Christmas shows are amazing. Your values as Christians really show through and we love that! I can’t think of a better way for my daughter to spend her time. In choosing a dance studio for a younger dancer, I’d be more interested in how dance would benefit her as a person. That being said, as she gets older, it is very impressive that you train such high quality dancers that have the opportunity to travel/perform all over. She is learning dance, but also learning valuable life lessons. The competition was our first experience and I cannot tell you how impressed I was with our dancers and your choice of costumes, appropriate choreography, and rules of conduct. I was completely shocked to see how some of the other dance studios had their girls dressed, the dance moves they used, and their attire when walking around the hallway. It was quite a contrast to Generations dancers. It made me so happy as a parent. I truly want you to know how much I appreciate you! I will support Rachel dancing with you as much and as long as she desires! – Ashley, mother of Generations dancer
by mail, you can download the form from the registration page or call and Generations will mail you a registration packet. Here are some of Generations Performing Arts Center offerings: Introductory classes: Creative Movement, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop. Creative Movement is designed for the new student ages 2 1/2 to 4 years old. All other introductory classes are offered for children ages 5 years and above.
Competitive training: Students may train in four levels of competition. This gives those who want to be more involved the opportunity to do it at a level that fits their life and schedule. Students who want to train to become a professional dancer would choose to train at the highest level of competition.
Call today to and find out which dance classes are the best fit for you and your family.
Boys classes: Exclusive Boys classes are offered in Tap and Hip Hop! Recreational Training: Generations offers an extensive list of classes for students who love to dance for the overall benefit of dance, and want to become skilled dancers. For

Otterbein Summer Theatre finds a new home in the Fritsche Theatre After 45 years in the basement of the Campus Center, Otterbein Summer Theatre found a new home ONSTAGE in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall in 2013 and is looking forward to opening a second season in the space. The new location provides an improved and more comfortable experience for audience members, including increased leg room, a full 12” of height between each row, a full row of seating directly on the floor for those unable to negotiate stairs, and handrails on every aisle. The vast amount of space above the heads of the audience members gives the theatre an open feel without sacrificing the intimacy Otterbein patrons enjoy during the summer productions. “It’s a black-box theatre feel without feeling boxed in!” said Al Minor, a longtime subscriber and theatre patron. The height also allows for more flexibility for scenic designs as units are able to be flown in and out of the space and the scene shop is directly behind the stage so pieces can be easily added and removed during the performance. “My wife and I have attended for more years that I can count. I was surprised when I discovered that the summer theatre had left its vintage home in the basement of the Campus Center…. but on opening night I experienced the new space, and I was very pleased with the result,” said Mike Collins, theatre patron and parent of an Otterbein Theatre graduate. “What’s not to like? The patrons are closer to the stage, have reliable air conditioning and have improved access (no stairs), more legroom, and better sight lines with

the increased riser height. Even from a technical perspective, the Cowan stage has better acoustics, better lighting, and a fly gallery to boot!” You can experience the new theatre space for yourself beginning June 5th when the 2014 Otterbein Summer Theatre season opens with The Fantasticks. Westerville Crew invites local high school students to join; no experience necessary Westerville Crew is a fixture of the northeast Columbus area since 1995. Matt and Trish Chase founded Westerville Crew with the help of lots of parents and rowers, growing to more than 100 high school rowers. Based on the east side of Hoover Reservoir, it provides easy access to high school students from the New Albany, Westerville, Gahanna, Big Walnut, and Olentangy school districts. Over the years, Westerville Crew has become a nationally-competitive team, with graduates being accepted to such rowing powers as Stanford, Cal Berkeley, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Northeastern, the US Naval Academy and many other fine schools. Graduates have gone on to win medals at the US23 World Championships and to join the US Senior National Team. As the only rowing program in the northeast sector of Columbus, no new members know how to row and so the
first step in becoming a competitive rower is to simply join. There are no cuts or tryouts. Your first day starts with the very basics and progresses from there. Every member rows in every competition (regatta). Workouts during the spring and fall seasons are on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. Almost all competitions are in Ohio and travel is confined to five weeks during the spring and fall. There are no summer competitions. Who makes a good rower? The most important attribute is the desire to compete at a high level. Westerville Crew accommodates all sizes and shapes while striving to create an endurance athlete of all of its members. Go to WestervilleCrew.org for more info and how to join. Westerville Crew (614) 565-9199 westervillecrew.org

The truth about fitness By Sue Markovitch Author of I Know What to Do, I Just Don’t Do It, Owner of Clear Rock Fitness – Specialized Personal Training for Women over 40 I hated being overweight. It was so uncomfortable. Yet I was stuck there for years, afraid to leave my “comfort zone”. I tried so many diets, but always ended up failing and feeling worse about myself. I could not understand why weight loss never worked for me, and I lost belief that it ever would. Then I learned the truth. It wasn’t that I hadn’t found the right program. I already knew what to do. I got stuck on the doing it part. I would start and stop, start and stop. And it was all or nothing for me; a restrictive diet with
frantic exercise or quitting completely. There is a better way that is rooted in peace and healing. The path to fitness, especially for us women over 40, is not another diet or program. We must restore the belief in our ability to make choices that will get us where we want to go. We must heal the lies that sabotage our best efforts, and instead become
Sue Markovitch empowered with the truth. The truth is we are all capable of honoring our body, our health and our life. We just might need a little encouragement to get there. To purchase a book, register for the seminar, or inquire about personal training for women over 40, please visit www.clearrockfitness.com or call (614) 439-6096.

Originally located in their home at 104 East College Avenue in Uptown Westerville, the Morelands moved to 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville in January 1973 to a building built specifically for a funeral home. Everything is located on one floor with ample parking and no steps. There are two large chapels and two lounges. Kenny and Dolores’ sons, Jack and Robert joined the family business; Jack in 1966, after graduating from Otterbein College and The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and Robert in 1967, after attending Otterbein College and graduating from The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Jack is past president of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. Jack’s son Tim joined the family business in 1996, after graduating from The Ohio State University and Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Now a third generation family-run funeral home serving Westerville, Galena,
Children in Westerville and the surrounding area have been coming to Buckeye Gymnastics for over 30 years. We have had the pleasure of seeing generations of children fall down and get back up as thousands have learned the basic skills on tumbling, beam, bars, rings, and all the other apparatus. Many of those children have gone on to master advanced skills as they traveled across the USA and around the world competing in gymnastics, cheerleading, and trampoline and tumbling. We are still teaching the children in Westerville today and every day. Our preschool students learn basic motor skills through gymnastics. Bars of every height, beams going up and down, trampolines, ropes, and mats of every shape and size. We use specialized preschool equipment to create action packed circuits that keep the girls and boys busy and learning. School age children master gymnastics skills in a progressive way learning the complicated moves step-by-step so that every child experiences success. We provide many pieces of equipment for our students to use so there is little time spent waiting. For the girls who make gymnastics their sport we offer the top gymnastics training opportunity in Ohio. No other team wins more state meets and has more state champions than we do at Buckeye. No one else is even close. But most of all we have fun. Because that is what gymnastics is all about... FUN Fitness. Come visit us today and take a free trial class. Residents flock to Bel Lago for dynamic flavors and wine program It was March 16, 2009 when Bel Lago opened its doors to the residents of Westerville. Since then French wine makers, New York executives and more than a few nostalgic Italians have discovered Columbus’ premier waterfront restaurant. From the wall of windows looking out onto the Hoover Reservoir it is easy to be transported to any faroff land. It is not hard to see the appeal for those passing through who find something familiar in the beautiful expanse of open water.
What the residents of Westerville notice is what is beyond the view. Unlike the casual visitor, those familiar with Bel Lago’s story appreciate the transformation that has occurred. They understand that a local business owner saw the unrealized potential of this space on the water and took a chance because he believed in creating a great restaurant for the community. Neighbors and friends do not take Bel Lago for granted. They lived through the con-
struction era, the monthslong renovations, required to transform a modest outdoor patio into a glass-enclosed, all-season veranda. They appreciate the dynamic flavors of the Mediterranean-focused menu and a culinary team that continues to exceed expectations and they love enjoying wine while taking in the view. In the past five years, Westerville residents have embraced and shaped the awardwinning wine program at Bel Lago. Today this program includes a Wine Director’s
Dinner, featuring a five course meal created by the executive chef and on-site Wine Director. Bel Lago also hosts WineOn-The-Water, a casual tasting featuring 10 wines for $10. After these tasting events, guests are welcome to stay for dinner and enjoy any featured wines at state minimum prices. The energy and enthusiasm guests have for Bel Lago’s wine offerings supported the purchase of a NapaTech wine distribution system that allows guests to enjoy world class wine by the ounce. Bel Lago is one of
very few restaurants in Ohio to have such a system. Through patience, dedication and community support Bel Lago has become a restaurant worthy of Westerville. A favorite site for celebrations, drinks after work and formal events, Bel Lago plays an active role in the local community. A generous supporter of many local charities, Bel Lago makes an effort to continue effecting positive change in the Westerville community. After all, without Westerville, Bel Lago would be merely an idea.

Make the Switch
Have you ever considered what you want from your financial institution? Maybe it’s freedom from the fees you’ve grown tired of, competitive loan rates and terms or superior service. BMI Federal Credit Union members enjoy all of those benefits and so much more. If you’re not getting the most from your financial institution, don’t settle — switch. Voted ThisWeek Community News’ Readers’ Choice for Best Credit Union (two years in a row) and Best Mortgage Provider, BMI Federal Credit Union is committed to improving the financial lives of each and every one of our members. We say members because when you join BMI Federal Credit Union, you’re not a customer – you’re an owner of the financial cooperative.
What is a credit union?
Credit unions have a long tradition of offering a unique approach to personal finance. The biggest difference between a bank and a credit union is that credit unions are founded on democratic, cooperative principles. Rather than being a for-profit corporation that answers to stockholders and investment firms, a credit union is a not-for-profit organization that is fully owned and directed by its members. The Board of Directors is composed of credit union members, elected by other credit union members. It is a system that ensures your credit union will always have your best interest in mind.

Fitness 19 brings familyfriendly, affordable fitness to the Westerville area Fitness 19 was launched in Seattle 14 years ago as an alternative to traditional health clubs with a simple, yet radical fitness club concept: family-friendly facilities that offer state-of-the-art cardio, strength and free weight equipment without the hassle of long-term contracts. The company has grown its budgetconscious business model opening 150 fitness clubs across the country. “We know that today’s potential and existing club members prefer the month-to-month option over the long-term commitment associated with a one-, two- or three-year contracts,” said Nick Wainscott, manager of Fitness 19 in Westerville. “At Fitness 19, we only offer monthto-month memberships. No one is locked into a hefty commitment.” And, the month-to-month memberships start at an attractive price. Current membership plans are as low as $7 per month. The monthly fee never increases and individuals can cancel at anytime. “That’s an important incentive for new members especially in this economy,” Wainscott said. “People are just as interested today in elevating their fitness level and healthy living as they have been for years, but they need membership rates that fit into their budget and knowing that they can cancel the membership at any time is comforting.”
Quality and convenience
Fitness 19 is focused on offering more value than most other gyms in terms of quality and convenience. Wainscott said each of its fitness centers is stocked with worldclass equipment from leading manufacturers like Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. The gyms include Mega Cardio Centers that feature more than 40 pieces of high-quality

treadmills, stair climbers, lifecycles and elliptical trainers — all with advanced ergonomics, easy-to-use consoles and sophisticated heart rate monitoring. New members are treated with a fitness evaluation from a Certified Personal Trainer on staff. The Fitness 19 gyms are also built to support active, happy families. That begins with locating the facilities in the heart of each of the communities it serves. The Westerville facility is situated in Westerville Plaza at the corner of Schrock Road and State Route 3, next to Kroger. “Our gyms are strategically located close to people’s homes and near where they shop and eat, so that going to the gym is not a big hassle,” Wainscott said. “It’s just part of their day.” In addition, each Fitness 19 site has a kid’s room, where children six months to 12 years can play and socialize in a supervised atmosphere while their parents’ exercise. Children 12 and older are encouraged to workout alongside their parents. Fitness 19 in Westerville also offers unlimited classes. Classes that are offered include: Zumba, Yoga, Bootcamp, Hip Hop, Piloxing, and many more.

Family-owned UPS Store celebrates 10 years In 2004, Bill Roebuck and his daughter Tiffany opened a new concept: The UPS Store, in the Giant Eagle Shopping Center at State Street and Maxtown Road. “It is hard to believe that it has been almost 10 years,” Bill said. “I can remember painting the store before we opened it with my son Chris, just before he left for Army Boot camp.” “Tiffany and I opened that store and began our journey into retail. Little did we know that it would be such a great adventure. Having a familyowned business in this community is much different than being just a retail store. Everyone who comes into The UPS Store is there for an important reason. “Whether it is returning shoes that don’t fit or packing a homemade baby blanket from Grandma to her new grandbaby in another state, it is always important,” Roebuck said. Having mastered the business in less than a year, the “Roebuck Team” decided to purchase the other UPS Store on the south side of Westerville, now located at 520 South State Street across street from Starbucks, in the building with Rita’s Ice. “Newer and larger with parking at the door, it is a big improvement to our customers on the south side”, said Tiffany. “Moving from the Westerville Square location during the Walmart remodel was difficult, but our customers appreciate the easy parking and expanded services at our new location.” Since starting her new family, with the arrival of Ellie, Tiffany has prepared her brother Chris to continue those per-
sonal relationships she built in her store. “Some places just don’t care about customer relationships,” Tiff said. “Not here. We have a vested interest in serving our community. That is why we added United States Postal Service products and our new Print Center. Yes, we now are able to mail and ship via the USPS First Class and Priority Mail and print just about anything.” “Chris has hit the ground running” Tiffany said. “Installing our Print Center was his first priority. Now with a new Production Print System in operation, we can print almost anything. From business cards to full color brochures, flyers, menus, posters and banners, we do it all! On time, with a smile and at a competitive price.” Private Mail Boxes continue to be a hot item with more people starting their own business. Having a real ‘Street Address’ instead of a PO Box is a big advantage when starting your own business. We offer 24-hour access to your mailbox as well as email package notification. Returning something purchased over the Internet with a Pre-Paid Shipping Label? Drop it off at The UPS Store and receive a free tracking receipt to prove your return. Yes, when it comes to shipping and packing and printing, we are your local experts! Thank you Westerville, for your continued support! Combined, our three stores ship over 80,000 packages per year, pack almost 10,000 and print almost anything you can think of. We look forward to serving you.

World-class dance instruction for all Straub Dance Center is close to ending its 46th year of serving the central Ohio community. During this time, Straub Dance Center has developed a reputation as a top dance center in the state as well as the nation. Known for strong technique and quality instruction, Straub also creates a warm, fun and friendly environment for students from ages two to adults. “We strive to build self-confidence in every student.” The studio is known for worldclass training in tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop and recently adding acrobatics. They are also always commended for their classy, conservative costumes and choreography which is appreciated in today’s world. Straub has the unique distinction of winning a top scoring overall award in the state at Dance Masters of Ohio consecutively from 1992 to 2014. They have also won top national awards at a national convention every year since 1994. Suzy Straub, Artistic Director, recently won the Top Choreography Award in both the Junior (Jazz Line “Cheetah Girls”) and Senior Divisions in (Lyrical Dance Line “Amazing Grace”) in Cleveland. She also took the entire Top Five Awards in Senior Group Competition as well as many other Overalls and Platinum Awards. McKenzie McGrath, age 15 won the Top Solo Award out of 129 soloists aged 13 to 20. McGrath also won the Top Overall Award in Scholarships in Tap, Ballet, Jazz and Acrobatics. She was awarded $225 for this achievement. Scholarship Awards were also given to Ella Niles, Cassidy Brown, Brittany Focht, Olivia Bushong, Chloe Carpenter, Emi Malik, Kelsey Ranney, Seraiah Wells, Marissa Morris, Kristina Horst-
man, Maddie Niles and Sarah Parton. Straub Dancers have been featured in Dance Magazine and many have gone on to college scholarships and professional careers including three Radio City Rockettes, dancers on Broadway and internationally in Europe and Asia. Melynda Straub Lott and Christy Lott Wiegand, a former Miss Dance of Ohio along with Suzy Straub Kiefaber head up the Performing Arts Company. Straub performs for many local events including the Harlem Globetrotters Games. Carole Straub, Director, is currently working very hard to try to save Veterans Memorial Auditorium even though the Franklin County Commissioners have voted to tear down this $43 million dollar building. She is working with several Veterans who are heading up a committee, as they are extremely upset. There will be millions spent on this project which includes a tiny zoo (if their permanent levy passes), an amphitheater, some bleachers and a few flags. Straub has used this venue for over twenty-five years and it is the perfect place with a 3,900 seat auditorium; ample, safe dressing areas and very easy access for the handicapped. It is also used for dance performances, competitions and many very large events. Columbus has nothing else like it and it could be renovated for millions less than what they are going to spend to tear it down (marble floors and all) and rebuild what they want. It is the 11th largest auditorium in the U.S. Call Straub Dance Center at (614) 891-5525 or visit www.savefcvets.org if you would like more information.

TMJD/Sleep Dentistry Therapy Center offers new treatments, technology and relief to local residents Dr. Michael Bezbatchenko founder of the Central Ohio TMJD & Dental Sleep Therapy Center was compelled to found this center in a response to the need in the community. Fondly known to his patients as Dr. Bez, he has been treating general dental conditions, TMJD and Sleep Apnea for over 30 years. He has a passion for helping his patients find relief from these often debilitating health issues. Dr. Bezbatchenko has been at the forefront finding new treatments, new technology, and new relief for those suffering with TMJD and Sleep Apnea.
The impact of Sleep Apnea According to a Harvard study, the economic impact in the United States of Obstructive Sleep Apnea is estimated to be between sixty five and one hundred sixty five billion dollars. This is greater than stroke, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. Sleep deprivation caused by unmanaged sleep apnea causes forty billion dollars in damages from traffic accidents annually and billions of dollar in lost productivity in the workplace. In addition to the economic impact, and more relative to our daily lives is the dramatic
His experience, continuing education and advanced technology enable Dr. Bezbatchenko to provide a level of care and treatments not offered elsewhere. toll that this condition takes on our health. Once thought of as only an annoying snoring habit, the often more serious sleep apnea that accompanies snoring is causing serious health issues. It has recently been learned that one third of patients with heart failure have obstructive sleep apnea. Also linked are type two diabetes, adult asthma and weight gain. Treatment commonly is with the CPAP machine; however the Harvard study also shows
that non-compliance is as high as sixty percent with this treatment. Dr. Bezbatchenko specializes in oral appliances as a solution to treat sleep apnea and has had great success with his patients. This is a mouth guard which pulls your lower jaw forward and then is held in place while you sleep. Patients report this to be quite comfortable and a much easier system than the CPAP. No electricity required, no noise and no mask to deal with as you must when wearing the CPAP
device. Central Ohio TMJD & Dental Sleep Therapy Center and Dr. Bezbatchenko have helped many resolve this problem and be able to return to getting a restful night’s sleep.
The truth about TMJD (Temporalmandibular joint dysfunction) Most treatments of TMJD related issues are really just masking the real cause of the
problem, and in some cases potentially making it worse. Masking the pain with medications, injecting the joint with botox and not truly assessing the issue at hand can be a mistake. The Central Ohio TMJD & Dental Sleep Therapy Center has sophisticated equipment that actually analyses the patients bite. Dr. Bezbatchenko can help reverse the unbalanced bite that leads to painful dysfunctions of the TMJ and dental foundation. Once the patient is evaluated it can be determined if the diagnoses is a mild, moderate, or a severe bite imbalance. They can then outline a variety of effective treatment and therapy options personalized to help the patient reverse the bite aging process. Many patients report getting their life back after undergoing treatment with Dr. Bezbatchenko. His experience, continuing education and advanced technology enable him to provide treatments not offered elsewhere.
