Community members volunteered to fix up homes as part of Rebuilding Together Central Ohio’s Rebuilding a Healthy Neighborhood Project in May.

The City has invested in park improvements, such as a new play set at Robinwood Park.

The City of Whitehall, along with the COCIC and WCIC, tore down a dilapidated apartment building in August.

Whitehall community comes together to beautify city Community improvement through beautification has been a top priority of City of Whitehall officials for years.

But 2015 has shown some advancement that has gone beyond the norm.

Last month, the City, in partnership with the Whitehall Community Improvement Corporation and the Central Ohio Community Improvement Corporation, tore down a blighted apartment building at 115 Shumaker Lane, just off Hamilton Road.

The 32,000-square-foot building sat empty for nearly six years and has been the site of vandalism.

“This demolition is a major step toward revitalizing our South Hamilton Road corridor,” said Whitehall Mayor Kim Maggard. “Tackling blight and strengthening code enforcement are top community priorities.”

The demolition was funded through the COCIC land bank program and the Whitehall CIC. The demolition paves the way for future improvements to the South Hamilton Road area, where product design and development firm Priority Designs opened this year and where Wallick Communities plans to open its new senior housing facility in the location of the former Ramada Inn. The Main Street corridor also is receiving an overhaul.

Many have likely noticed the construction on Main Street near The Shops at Collingwood at the western border of Whitehall.

By the end of October, a landscaped median and streetscape improvements will be completed between Maplewood and Collingwood avenues.

This $1.2-million project will be funded through TIF (tax increment financing) funds, a special development tool that does not touch the City’s general fund.

The goal of the project is to enhance one of the most traveled areas in the City and to provide a distinctive City boundary with Columbus.

AFTER The 2015 Whitehall Home Reinvestment Program helped about 25 residents make significant improvements to their properties.

A similar gateway feature is in the planning phase for the North Hamilton Road corridor near the entrance to Whitehall Community Park.

Further park improvements, including a splash pad at John Bishop Park, will get under way next year.

Thanks to a City grant program, residents’ private homes got a spruce-up this year, too.

About 25 homeowners received funding through the City’s 2015 Home Reinvestment grant program. Qualifying and approved residents received up to 50 percent reimbursement grants for their home projects.

On June 1, residents lined up outside of City Hall for funding. The City set aside $105,000 for the program, which funds exterior home remodeling projects, such as driveway work, siding, windows, painting, doors and landscaping. Funding was granted on a

first-come, first-serve basis.

This year’s most popular projects were driveway facelifts and new windows.

This year was the second year for the grant program. In its first year, 22 residents received funding to improve their homes. As expected and desired when the program was imagined, the City’s $100,000 investment spurred significantly more than double that in private, residential improvements.

Local non-profits are also helping to rejuvenate the community through grants and giving back.

In May, Rebuilding Together Central Ohio and 700 volunteers descended on the City’s Country Club Village neighborhood to perform improvements on 25 homes as part of their 25th annual Rebuilding a Healthy Neighborhood Project.

Rebuilding Together Central Ohio focuses on helping senior and low income residents in Franklin County with emergency and life-safety home repairs. The organization, based right off Fifth Avenue outside of Whitehall, also operates the Franklin County Tool Library, which rents tools to residents and organizations for home projects.

Homeowners received assistance in the form of painting, new appliances, life/safety enhancements, electrical work and more.

Rebuilding Together approached the City in mid-2014 about bringing its annual project to Whitehall for 2015.

“We knew Rebuilding Together was an amazing organization when they approached us,” said Whitehall Community Affairs Coordinator Gail Martineau. “But we had no idea the effect the organization would have on our community. It’s so fun driving through Country Club Village and seeing the lasting impact of the organization and volunteers’ work.”

To honor the work RTCO completed in Country Club Village, the Pride of Whitehall, another Whitehall non-

profit, received a grant from the United Way of Central Ohio and the Columbus Foundation to transform a dilapidated property at the corner of Dimson Drive South and Country Club Road into a greenspace. Prior to work on the property last month, the kitchen floor and foundation of a home that had burned down on the property were still visible.

The greenspace, which will be completed later this month, will feature a seating area, landscaping and a sign commemorating the Rebuilding Together project. Volunteers from RTCO will help install the landscaping.

Cleaning up the streets of Whitehall is a major area of focus.

The City has applied to form a Whitehall chapter of Keep America Beautiful.

The charter will allow Whitehall to access hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money to continue to beautify the City.

One of the first tasks of the group will be to conduct a litter index of the City to benchmark Whitehall against other cities and municipalities that also have Keep America Beautiful charters.

The group will then move forward with plans to tackle the issue.

Even prior to that, though, the City will host its biannual Clean-Up Event at John Bishop Park on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Light refreshments will be provided after the clean-up, which targets some of the most heavily traveled areas of the City.

Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Whitehall beautification efforts span far and wide, from non-profits helping out, to the City creating programs to assist residents in their own improvement projects.

Individuals, no matter how young or old, can help make Whitehall more beautiful by taking small, yet meaningful steps, such as making sure trash cans are covered when set out at the curb, setting an example for others by not littering and taking the extra step to pick up trash on the street.

The new building, which opened in April, offers more than double the space of the former branch and tons of amazing new features –– including individual study rooms, a recording studio and a drive-up book window where you can return materials and pick up reserves without ever leaving your car. There is also plenty of parking.

A spacious children’s area is the perfect place for kids to discover great books and enjoy one of our weekly Storytimes. The space is named in honor of our good friend and longtime Whitehall Branch children’s librarian Carol Snowden, who bequeathed $750,000 to the new branch when she passed away in 2008.

Our Homework Help Center offers

K-12 students free after-school help from trained specialists and community volunteers. And a new feature, called a Ready for Kindergarten Area, gives preschool-aged children and their families a place to learn what it’s like in a kindergarten classroom.

Five flexibly designed meeting rooms offer the Whitehall community a place to gather, and a natural lightfilled Quiet Room with a gas fireplace provides sanctuary for those customers who prefer a little bit of quiet while they study or read. The new branch also has a room just for Columbus State Community College students, who can take advantage of admissions counseling, GED coursework and distance learning opportunities. Our wonderful staff will be delighted to show you and your family any of these dynamic spaces, or you are more than welcome to come explore them yourselves.

Foods may help fight cancer While no single food or ingredient can prevent people from getting cancer, research has shown a link between excess body fat and various cancers. A poor diet that’s high in fat can contribute to excess body fat, which the American Institute for Cancer Research has linked to higher risks for developing cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, colon and rectum, and gallbladder, among others.

The AICR notes that research on foods that fight cancer is ongoing, but the following are some of the foods that can play a role in cancer prevention.

Apples Apples are a good source of fiber, which can help men and women lower their cancer risk. Dietary fiber can increase feelings of fullness, which reduces the likelihood that people will overeat. Men and women who do not overeat are less likely to accumulate the excess body fat that increases their risk for various cancers. In addition, apples’ dietary fiber contains pectin, a polysaccharide that bacteria in the stomach can use to produce compounds that protect colon cells.

Broccoli Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable, and nearly all cruciferous vegetables, which get their name because their four-petal flowers resemble a cross, or crucifer, are great sources of vitamin C. Broccoli also is a great source of the B vitamin folate as well as potassium. The AICR notes that studies have shown folate helps to maintain healthy DNA and keep cancerpromoting genes inactive. But men and women should speak with their physicians

regarding how much folate to include in their diets, as animal studies have suggested that high amounts of folate may promote development of certain types of cancer, including colon cancer.

Cranberries Like apples, cranberries are high in dietary fiber and vitamin C. Diets high in foods containing vitamin C have been linked to a reduced risk for cancer of the esophagus. In addition, studies have shown that vitamin C protects cells’ DNA by trapping free radicals, which can damage the body, and inhibiting the formation of substances called carcinogens, which are capable of causing cancer in living tissue.

Legumes Legumes include kidney and black beans, yellow split peas and red lentils.

Dry beans and peas are great sources of fiber and good sources of protein, and each also make excellent sources of folate.

In addition to their ability to contribute to the protection of colon cells, legumes also contain various phytochemicals, which researchers feel may decrease chronic inflammation, a risk factor for many cancers. In addition, these phytochemicals may increase the self-destruction of cancer cells.

While there are no magic foods that can guarantee men and women won’t one day develop cancer, there are many foods that research has shown are capable of reducing a person’s risk of developing this potentially deadly disease. More information on cancer-fighting foods is available at www.aicr.org.

Holy Spirit continues to serve the Whitehall community through faith, action and hope Holy Spirit Parish has been a foundation of Whitehall for more than five decades. On February 10, 1947, the Holy Spirit Community celebrated its first liturgical worship. Five years later, in 1952, Holy Spirit School opened its doors with 164 eager students enrolled in that first class.

Today, Holy Spirit continues to serve the Whitehall community through faith, action and hope. Here, parishioners gather to worship, led by their pastor, Father William L. Arnold. Airline miles Many airlines allow customers to transfer their airline miles to whomever they choose. Revive summer-ravaged skin, hair and feet As summer draws to a close, many people will reminisce about weeks spent relaxing and basking in the sun.

Summer is typically full of fun, vacations and relaxation, but while the sun and surf may be refreshing for the mind, sometimes the body pays a price for all of those days spent soaking up some rays.

Summer can be harsh on skin, feet, hair and more. As the warm days wind down, practice some post-summer beauty tips to revive your skin, hair and feet.

However, saltwater and chemical-laden pool water can turn tresses into a mess. One pitfall that plagues people who swim regularly is a green tinge that appears in the hair, which is most noticeable on people who have blond hair. Some people blame the chlorine in the water for the green tint, but the real culprit is copper, a common element found in commercial algicides.

Pedicure treatments also can provide some relief for your feet. Soaking and massaging the feet and addressing any calluses can help feet recover. Think about also applying a deep moisturizer to the feet and then covering them with cotton socks, which can be left on while you sleep, and you may discover the following morning that you have woken up with softer, smoother soles.

Summer is a fun time of year, but one that takes its toll on the human body. A few simple tips can recharge the body and have a person looking refreshed and revitalized.

Many people now know of the damage ultraviolet rays can do to unprotected skin. In spite of that widely held knowledge, skin cancer remains the most common form of cancer in the United States, where the Skin Cancer Foundation says more than 3.5 million skin cancers are detected annually.

The best protection against skin cancer and skin damage from the sun is to use sunscreen and remain in the shade as much as possible. However, sometimes sunburns and blotchy suntans prevail.

Moisturize the skin with a penetrating product as a first recovery step. Aloe is an item found in many healing skin balms and lotions.

Although it can be tempting to tear off portions of peeling, sunburned skin, the peeling is actually a natural part of the healing process and should not be disturbed. The dead skin acts as a protective layer while fragile, tender new skin grows underneath. Use a mild soap and lukewarm water when showering.

Moisturizer can keep the damaged skin moist and make peeling less noticeable.

Some have found that spraying the skin with a solution made of vinegar and water can reduce the itching associated with peeling skin.

For more than 70 years, the DQŽ system’s recipe for success has been simple. It’s been a combination of hardworking people who own and operate restaurants, and great-tasting food and tempting treats served in our establishments.

Our phenomenal story began with the 10 cent sale of a then unnamed product on August 4, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois. A father and son partnership in Green River Illinois, had been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some time. They contacted a good friend and customer, who agreed to run the “all you can eat� trial sale at the walk-in ice cream store. Within two hours, he dished out more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert.

Back then, food franchising was all but unheard of, but the new product’s potential made it a natural for such a system. When the United States entered World War II, there were fewer than 10 Dairy Queen stores. However, shortly after the war, the system took off!
