Four generations of the Carfagna family proud to call Westerville home
To say, “The Carfagna family has formidable ties to the Westerville community” would be an understatement. After four generations, we can affirmatively say, with confidence, that Westerville, Ohio is where we’re from. The fourth generation of Carfagna’s were born and raised in Westerville, they went to school in Westerville, played sports in Westerville, and our families are parishioners at St. Paul’s Church. Westerville is our home, and we have long been serving the people of this wonderful northern Columbus suburb. The Carfagna’s businesses have long been centered on the north side of Columbus communities, mainly Westerville. We count on the residents of Westerville, day in and day out, as our bloodline that keeps us alive. This all started in the early 70s when we moved Carfagna’s, our long standing fine meats and Italian foods market, to 1405 E Dublin-Granville Road nestled in the north side on Columbus just off I-71. Our grandfather, whose home was in Minerva Park at the time, saw the growth of the neighborhoods in northern Columbus and set out to be a part of that. Westerville has developed into the “Best Suburb in America”, we all read that article online, and to us it was no surprise. We have been serving generations of residents in Westerville ever since that move. Everyday someone comes in and tells us their parents or grandparents have been shopping here for years, and that every Christmas, or holiday they would flock to Carfagna’s with joy and anticipation for their roasts or steaks. It truly never gets old. We love being able to grow together. Our catering business has grown tremendously over the years with the uprising of local Westerville businesses and neighborhoods. We have catered all over Westerville from business lunches and retirement parties, to family events such as graduations and weddings. We absolutely love when someone from Westerville calls us to cater their wedding, because we know those people. We have grown with them for years. They were our neighbors, or classmates. We know they will

L to R: Dino Carfagna, Mike Carfagna, Dino Jr. Carfagna, Carmen Carfagna, Sam Carfagna and Luciano Carfagna thank the residents of Westerville for their support. take care of us, so we absolutely make sure we take care of them. Eight years ago, we opened Carfagna’s Kitchen, our Italian restaurant, at 2025 Polaris Parkway. Before we opened our doors on Polaris Parkway, we looked at many locations. We were never surer of any than when the Polaris location became available. That is where we wanted to be. We knew the people of Westerville, who have supported us for decades, were the people with whom we wanted to share our handmade foods. Eight years later and counting, we are still thankful for the longevity you have given us. Two years ago, we opened our Manufacturing Facility on Westerville Road. At this location we produce
our sauces and soups you have seen at local grocers or our market, and our homemade pastas and soups we serve at our restaurant. We knew that if we wanted continued growth, we had to look towards the future. And what better place to look towards the future than on the doorstep of Westerville, Ohio? In all honesty, the main reason we wanted to share this information with you today was to say thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. As we have seen the countless generations of Westerville residents supporting our family, our only hopes are that we are able to return the favor and support you and your families. Thank you Westerville. From The Carfagna family to yours, thank you.

Tea isn’t always tea at Uptown on Main! When someone says they don’t like tea, they may be referring to black tea. They could be missing out on some wonderful beverages because they aren’t aware of other options also called “tea”. True tea comes from the camellia sinensis plant. The most familiar ones are black, oolong, pu’erh, green and white tea. Then there are “teas” from other plants, herbs and roots like peppermint, chamomile, hibiscus, echinaecea roots, sassafras bark and rooibos. Rooibos is said to be high in antioxidants and offer other health and nutritional benefits. Rooibos (pronounced roy-BOSS or
roy-BUS) is sometimes called “red tea”. It grows in the Cape Town, South Africa area and works well with different flavors to create some outstanding beverages. Most teas, including rooibos, can be iced or hot. Caramel Creme rooibos, when served hot is like cocoa only caramel flavored. Georgia Peach and Orange Spice rooibos make especially great iced tea. Try some Blue Turtle Tea & Spice “tea” that isn’t really tea from Uptown On Main at 64 East Main Street (just 500 feet east of State Street). Open Wednesday to Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Drink more tea!

Award-winning Mount Carmel St. Ann’s continues to add new patient-centered facilities, services Much of the news surrounding Mount Carmel St. Ann’s in recent years has focused on the $120 million campus expansion that changed St. Ann’s from Westerville’s community hospital into a full-service regional medical center. That expansion, which featured the addition of a new main entrance, new state-of-the-art facilities for general surgery and cardiovascular, orthopedic and spine care, and new dining and infrastructure improvements, literally changed the face of healthcare in the community. Now that it’s complete, you’d think the St. Ann’s team would have taken some time to settle in before embarking on the next big thing. But that kind of leisureliness doesn’t appear to be in their nature. Instead, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s has turned its attention to finding new ways to improve patient experiences and deepen its involvement in the community. In fact, they’ve introduced several new technologies and services and earned a number of recognitions for the patient-centered care they’ve always taken pride in providing. Among those new services is openheart surgery. St. Ann’s became the first hospital in northeast Columbus to offer open-heart when it opened its integrated cardiovascular center of excellence and expanded its overall heart care program in 2014. Mount Carmel St. Ann’s also became the first and only hospital in central Ohio to offer Automated Breast Ultrasound — the only FDA-approved breast screening technology specifically developed for women with dense breast tissue. Studies have shown it can improve breast cancer detection by up to 35% when combined with an annual mammogram. Other new technologies abound as well. PET/CT scans, which are hightech images used to determine the location and extent of tumors and check patients’ progress after treatment, are now available on campus. Each PET/ CT scan is interpreted by one of Mount Carmel’s board-certified radiologists, ensuring remarkably accurate results. And Columbus Cyberknife, which is a robotic technology offered exclusively at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s that enables nonsurgical tumor treatment, recently completed a major system upgrade to provide greater accuracy, quicker treatment times and the ability to better avoid healthy tissue during treatment. “It’s been an amazing few years here,” said Mount Carmel St. Ann’s President and COO Janet Meeks. “We’re using every new facility and technology to expand the care we provide to our patients and to enhance the experience our patients and their families have when they visit us. The campus may look different now, but the core of who we are and what we do remains true as we provide high tech, compassionate care.” What Mount Carmel St. Ann’s is and has been for some time is an awardwinning medical center. That fact was reinforced this year by a number of awards and distinctions for everything from safety to stroke care. St. Ann’s received a Hospital Safety

Score of “A” from the Leapfrog Group for its strong commitment to patient safety. The score reflects the hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. It’s the only nationally standardized and endorsed set of measures that captures hospital performance in patient safety, quality and resource utilization. St. Ann’s also received the Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Silver Quality Achievement award from the American Stroke Association, making it part of an elite group of hospitals recognized for its commitment and success in implementing nationally accepted standards and recommendations for stroke treatment and for providing patients with a higher standard of care. Mount Carmel St. Ann’s continues to maintain full accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, demonstrating the hospital’s expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria for diagnosing and treating chest pain. Being accredited or certified by the independent, not-for-profit Joint Com-
mission is a big deal for any medical facility. It’s recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. The hospital once again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with Joint Commission performance standards. By demonstrating its expertise and commitment to quality patient care and meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria for diagnosing and treating patients with stroke, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s also received Joint Commission re-certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. And in earning Joint Commission recognition as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, the hospital demonstrated excellence in accountability measure performance for evidencebased clinical processes in heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Mount Carmel St. Ann’s wasn’t just recognized for its clinical excellence. It’s received awards for creativ-
ity as well. The Mount Carmel Stroke Outreach Program received a national RAISE (Raising Awareness in Stroke Excellence) award from the National Stroke Association for community outreach efforts with elementary school students that “took stroke awareness activities to new heights.” “It’s very gratifying to be recognized by so many respected organizations for the standards we set and the work we do,” said Meeks. “But the real recognition comes in the appreciation and satisfaction we get from our patients when they feel they’ve received amazing care here. And our team delivers that remarkable care each and every day.” Mount Carmel St. Ann’s takes that commitment to caring outside the walls of the hospital, too, to create great partnerships and connections in the community. The hospital is a generous and active sponsor of a variety of local programs, and is proud to serve as the presenting sponsor of the 4th Fridays Celebrations for the next two years. St. Ann’s also supports a number of other organizations including the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (WARM) summer lunch program, Westerville Parks Foundation Bunny Hop 5K, Westerville Rotary Club Independence Day Celebration, City of Westerville Touch A Truck and Cops & Kids Day events, and the Westerville Chamber of Commerce’s annual Music & Arts Festival. “We’re proud to be a part of Westerville’s past and thrilled to be part of its future,” Meeks said. “That’s why we continue to invest in the community, not just by improving our facilities and the care we provide, but also by finding even more ways to improve the lives of our friends and neighbors here. And that’s an easy investment to make when you love something as much as we love Westerville.”

Their reputation is known all over the state, as well as the country. Strong technique and ethics are the hallmark of their dance training, however the business was formed because of a love of children and dance. They are also known for their tasteful and appropriate music and costumes. They have been featured in the national Dance Magazine. A real woman has curves has muscles is skinny …is whatever she wants to be By Sue Markovitch I found these words while browsing Facebook, and posted them on my Clear Rock Fitness page. That post was noticed by more women than any other post on my page. I think, at the root, lies the belief that we are never good enough. The world says we don’t measure up, even though we are wearing ourselves out to meet standards for our bodies, finances, families and our entire lives. But the target keeps moving. One before and after photo will say that curves make you a real women, and skinny, stick figures don’t cut it. Then we’ll read about how being tight and toned is the new standard and if you aren’t muscular, you aren’t measuring up. But wait. Isn’t being thin the ultimate reflection of a real woman? Do we really have the freedom to carry extra
weight without judgment on our worth as women? There is no physique that shields us from judgment. Even if we get judged positively, it is still judgment. Better keep up that level of curviness, muscularity or thinness or else you will fall out of grace. Yet…a real women is whatever she wants to be. Anytime I find myself in judgment of my own body, I remember I am part of a revolution that doesn’t base a woman’s worth on size and shape. I am precious and loved. I am doing my best. I share this path with all my sisters, no matter where they are on the path. If you are a woman over 40 and would like help getting fit and feeling better about yourself, email Sue Markovitch, author of I Know What to Do, I Just Don’t Do It (trainersue@ hotmail.com) or visit www.clearrockfitness.com.

Essential oils play a major role in health and wellness
If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant, and in addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils also provide plants with protection against predators and disease, and play a role in plant pollination. Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue on your hand is full of essential oils! Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. They are non water-based, and although they are fat soluble, essential oils do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. In addition to the intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Today, modern scientific study and trends toward more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications. Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications and can be used as a single oil at a time or in complex
blends depending on user experience and desired benefit. Essential oils are usually administered by one of three methods: diffused aromatically, applied topically, or taken internally as dietary supplements. Furthermore, in addition to being used to promote wellness, essential oils can also be used as safe and natural cleaning agents for floors, windows and much more! dōTERRA CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils represent the safest, purest, and most beneficial essential oils available today. They are gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world. Otterbein Summer Theatre 2015 set for June 4 to July 25 Otterbein Summer Theatre, has a season packed full of drama, laughter and good old-fashioned fun. Join the all-student ensemble onstage in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall June 4-July 25. The season will open with the 2011 Pulitzer Prize winning Clybourne Park, a wickedly funny and fiercely provocative new play about the volatile combination of race and real estate. Neighbors wage a hilarious and horrifying pitched battle over territory and legacy that reveals just how far our ideas about race and gentrification have evolved. Laughter and silliness will follow beginning with the opening of one of the funniest plays ever written, The Nerd. The action centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he’s never met but
who saved his life in Vietnam—the visitor turning out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly nerdy individual who outstays his welcome with a vengeance. Perfect entertainment for the entire family, The Nerd will have you laughing all night long. Swing’s the thing in The All Night Strut, the final production of the 2015 Otterbein Summer Theatre season. The production takes you on a journey through the Depression, World War II and the post war boom in a musical celebration of 1930’s and 40’s music by legendary songwriters such as Hoagy Carmichael, Frank Loesser, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Cab Calloway and the Gershwins. How to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at home Greenhouse gases are gases in the atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone are the primary greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, and according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, these gases are significant contributors to climate change. While climate change poses a considerable threat, itÕs important to note that much of the increase in greenhouse gases over the last 150 years can be traced to human activities. By changing certain behaviors and practices, men and women can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The following are a few simple changes men and women can make in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their homes. • Buy ENERGY STAR® products. A 2012 report from the United States Energy Information Administration noted that electricity production generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. The ENERGY STAR® label indicates products have been tested and approved as energy-efficient, meaning they consume less electricity than other similar products. The ENERGY STAR® label can be found on a host of home appliances, including lighting, heating and cooling equipment and electronics. Homeowners who want to pitch in to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also lowering their utility bills should only consider those products that have
earned the ENERGY STAR® label. • Revisit your cooling and heating habits. Home cooling and heating systems consume a considerable amount of energy, and inefficient use of these systems is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. But cutting back on these emissions does not mean you have to sweat out sultry summer afternoons or hide under the covers upon the arrival of winter. Replacing air filters according to manufacturer guidelines and using programmable thermostats so you aren’t heating and cooling your house when no one is home are some easy ways to dramatically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that emanate from your heating and cooling systems. Such efficient use of these systems also saves you money on your monthly energy bills. • Recycle. Recycling can greatly reduce your home’s greenhouse gas emissions. Many communities now mandate that residents recycle plastics, glass containers and paper goods like newspapers and magazines. Recycling can be so simple that it’s easy to forget just how beneficial it can be. When products are recycled, that reduces the need to extract resources, manufacture replacement goods and dispose of products, each of which contributes to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. If you and members of your household have yet to embrace recycling, you’re not only increasing greenhouse gas emissions, but also you
Making more efficient use of home heating and cooling systems is one way homeowners can reduce greenhouse gas emissions at home. may even be breaking the law. If your community sponsors a recycling program, simply separate recyclable items from the rest of your trash and leave them out on the curb on designated pickup days. If no such program exists in your community, separate items to recycle and periodically bring them to your local recycling center, which may even pay you for certain items. • Compost food waste. Instead of discarding leftovers in the garbage can, compost that wasted food so it does
not end up in landfills, where it will contribute to methane gas in the air. Composting food waste can improve the soil in your yard and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it also makes you feel better that you’re making use of wasted food that would otherwise go straight into the garbage can. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions may seem like a massive undertaking, but concerned men and women can employ several simple strategies to do their part to protect the environment.

OhioHealth Westerville Medical Campus: One-stop healthcare destination continuing to grow The OhioHealth Westerville Medical Campus celebrated its six year anniversary in January. Over that time, the campus has continued to grow, bringing new services and innovation to the Westerville community. There are a broad range of services and over 120 physicians who practice on-site. Current physicians and services include: • Breast Surgery • Cancer Care • Colon and Rectal Surgery • Dermatology • Emergency Services (24/7) • Endoscopy • Foot and Ankle Surgery • General Surgery • Heart and Vascular • Neurology and Neurosurgery • Obstetrics and Gynecology • Orthopedics • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation • Plastic Surgery • Primary Care • Pulmonology • Radiology • Rheumatology • Sleep Medicine • WorkHealth/Occupational Health “Since day one, it’s been our goal to be a convenient, one stop-shop for the community,” says Janet Scott, Director of the Westerville Medical Campus. “We’ve definitely accomplished that. It’s been well received by patients to have primary care, testing and specialists all in one location. It can be intimidating to leave the community and go to a hospital. We’re able to offer a broad range of services right here in Westerville.” The 24/7 Emergency Care Center was OhioHealth’s first freestanding emergency department and will mark its third anniversary this summer. Much more than an urgent care, it’s equipped to handle most any medical emergency. “The Emergency Care Center has far exceeded our expectations,” says Scott. “We pride ourselves in giving patients exceptional customer service, which includes having the shortest period of time possible between their initial assessments to the time they see a physician.” The Emergency Care Center
provides expert care by central Ohio’s largest and most experienced emergency physician group, the same physicians who treat patients at Riverside Methodist, Grant and Dublin Methodist Hospitals, right in the Westerville community. Westerville Medical Campus performed over 12,000 screening mammograms for women in 2014. This includes 3-D mammography for women with dense breast tissue. Biopsies of the breast and thyroid are able to be done right onsite. Thanks to a grant from Komen Columbus, Latina mammography days for women from all over central Ohio are held four times per year with a translator on-site.
New Services Lung Cancer Screenings This summer, patients will be able to be screened for lung cancer with a lowdose CT scan that provides the medical team with detailed, 3-D information about the patient’s lungs. This information can help doctors detect cancer early and can reduce the patient’s risk of death. Cardiovascular MRI A new, state-of-the-art scanner will also arrive this summer. “This is another diagnostic tool we’ll have on-site in our toolbox to identify disease so our physicians can develop the best treatment plans,” says Scott. An advanced
imaging cardiologist has joined the team and will be seeing patients in Westerville. Expanded ALS Clinic The ALS clinic is now seeing patients twice per month. When an ALS patient comes in for their appointment, they meet with the full ALS team all in one visit. A rotating team including a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and dietitian come in and meet with patients oneon-one. “It’s convenient for the patient because they stay in one spot and everyone comes in to see them, one at a time,” says Scott. “Instead of coming in for multiple visits, they get what they need in a couple of hours.”
New Technology On-Site Patient Registration Kiosks When patients walk in the front doors, they’ll notice new registration kiosks. Just like checking in for a flight at the airport, these kiosks are touch screen with patient convenience in mind. “Some patients, like those coming for rehabilitation, are coming in for treatment multiple times over a short period of time,” says Scott. “This is a way for patients to quickly get checked in. It’s all about patient convenience.” If patients don’t want to use the new technology, that’s ok, too. There is still a greeter at the door to get patients checked in if they prefer to use that method. Electronic Medical Records Westerville Medical Campus went live with a new electronic medical record (EMR) system in February.
“This new system means patient information is readily available to physicians and staff members across the campus and throughout the entire OhioHealth system,” says Scott. With this technology, physicians and staff will be able to communicate easily, which means better outcomes and efficient visits for patients.
Good for Westerville Partnering with Westerville City Schools The relationship with Westerville City Schools is very important to the team at the campus. OhioHealth was proud to be named the “Business Partner of the Year” in 2014 by the district. The enrollment center where families begin the school enrollment process is rented out to the school system for $1 per year. Over 20 schools in the district use this space to streamline the process to one location for enrollment. Athletically, OhioHealth physicians and athletic trainers continue to provide treatment for student-athletes at all three high schools. Community Involvement Beyond practicing healthcare, OhioHealth is proud to be involved in the community by sponsoring events such as the First on the First 5K, Field of Heroes 5K and the Westerville Arts Festival. OhioHealth associates are also involved with the Rotary and Senior Center, in addition to many other local organizations. The Westerville Medical Campus partners with Westerville Area Resource Ministry to raise food and funds every year for Thanksgiving. “We are proud to be in Westerville and look forward to improving the health of those in the community and partnering with the schools and community members for many years to come,” says Scott.

Where you start the journey makes all the difference For more than 26 years, The Goddard School® has been a trusted name among parents and families. Its classrooms are safe, nurturing environments for children six weeks to six years, offering age-appropriate opportunities to explore and discover. At The Goddard School, every family enjoys a warm, positive experience. “We strive to provide the best quality program for each child,” says Steve Powell, on-site owner of The Goddard School located in Westerville (Polaris), Ohio. “Our play-based F.L.EX.® Learning Program ensures that we meet high standards specific to early learning, development and care.” The F.L.EX.® Learning Program (Fun Learning Experience) is grounded in research on how children learn best: children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun. It’s designed to help build each child’s emotional, academic, social, creative and physical skills – including 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking (4Cs) - to provide a well-rounded experience and ensure each one becomes confident, joyful and fully prepared in school and in life. “The Goddard School has become the first preschool program to join The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21), a national organization championing 21st century skills,” explains Ray Murray, on-site owner of The Goddard School located in Westerville (County Line), Ohio. “Children at the God-
dard Schools located in Westerville not only learn the 4Cs, but also executive function skills, which include planning, organizing and strategizing.” 21st century skills also tie in directly with STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Introducing STEAM concepts early on helps to promote children’s natural curiosity in STEAM, increasing the chance that children will pursue STEAM-related careers later on in life. “Supporting STEAM learning at the preschool level involves identifying activities children naturally do for opportunities to further guide them,” says Jennifer Chambers, on-site owner of The Goddard School located in Westerville (Executive Parkway), OH. “At The Goddard School, when children solve puzzles or play with blocks, they essentially create pathways in their brains that help with STEAM learning later on.” Another essential aspect of The Goddard School is the importance of safety. Nothing is more crucial than the health
and safety of children. That’s why, at The Goddard School, their security is the highest priority. From every detail of the classroom and playground designs to the high standards of cleanliness to how the faculty responds in an emergency – every base is covered. Great Uptown Westerville location
Why uptown Westerville? At their first meeting with parents in 1999, it was asked, “What do you look for in a location?” The answers included: spacious, convenient, safety, parking, clean facility, something to do while the children are in class, and food nearby for those who dance long hours. That is why Generations made their home in Uptown Westerville

Local mother shares her thoughts on Generations We LOVE Generations! Summer classes were a nice way to get started with a short commitment to see if she liked it. (She did!) My favorite thing about Generations is that you value and teach each girl as an important person, not just a number. I truly appreciate how you hold the girls to task, hold them accountable, and make them work hard but you do it in a loving and kind way. I am always impressed at how much Rachel has learned each time I have the chance to observe. I feel the training is wonderful. Your recital and Christmas shows are amazing. Your values as Christians really show through and we love that! I can’t think of a better way for my daughter to spend her time. In choosing a dance studio for a younger dancer, I’d be more interested in how dance would benefit her as a person. That being said, as she gets older, it is very impressive that you train such high quality dancers that have the opportunity to travel/perform all over. She is learning dance, but also learning valuable life lessons. The competition was our first experience and I cannot tell you how impressed I was with our dancers and your choice of costumes, appropriate choreography, and rules of conduct. I was completely shocked to see how some of the other dance studios had their girls dressed, the dance moves they used, and their attire when walking around the hallway. It was quite a contrast to Generations dancers. It made me so happy as a parent. I truly want you to know how much I appreciate you! I will support Rachel dancing with you as much and as long as she desires! – Ashley, mother of Generations dancer

Embrace an active outdoor lifestyle Blue skies and warm weather entice people to enjoy the great outdoors. For many people, few things are more enjoyable than soaking up some rays and breathing in some fresh air. Moderate temperatures help make many outdoor activities that much more enjoyable. But even if the weather isn’t perfect, individuals can make the best of the situation and still get out of the house. As the seasons of warm weather return, those itching to get outside can explore these entertaining outdoor activities.
Hiking
Thousands of miles of hiking trails crisscross North America. These trails include rough and rugged paths blazed across natural areas and long-distance trails that stretch over portions of the country. From the Appalachian Trail in the East to the Bigfoot Trail in the west, hikers and nature enthusiasts have plenty of trails to tread. Hiking is a great outdoor activity in part because it can be enjoyed by people of any age and just about any fitness level. Hikers can work up from relatively short and flat trails to more intense vertical and varied hikes. Local parks, government preserves and rural areas offer plenty of places to walk and hike. When hiking, it’s best to go in pairs. In the event anything occurs, such as an injury, the other hiker will be able to go for help. Hikers also should alert people at home as to their itineraries. Leave a map and plot out where you will be, especially if hikes take you off
the beaten path. Remember to pack a portable snack and plenty of water. And when out in the sun, apply sunscreen and reapply as needed.
Biking
Biking is another outdoor activity ideal for people of all ages and athletic abilities. Once you’ve learned to ride a bicycle, that ability stays with you, whether you ride a bike each day or haven’t taken one for a spin in years. Many towns and cities across the country have become much more bikefriendly in recent years, clearing space for biking paths and lanes even in the busiest metropolitan areas. And mountain bikers still have plenty of trails to traverse as well. Check that your bike is in good working order and that the chain is freshly oiled. Take your bike to a local cycling shop for a tuneup if necessary. Verify the fit of helmets, especially on children who may have grown since the most recent cycling season.
Horseback riding
Nature takes on an entirely different look when you are atop a horse. Horseback riding isn’t just for country folk or cowboys, and it can be a great workout as well as a recreational retreat. It takes balance, strong legs and quick reflexes to stay in a saddle. Those interested in horseback riding should visit a stable or riding academy nearby. You likely do not need to own a horse of your own, as riding schools and stables will have animals you can work with. Remember to wear the right cloth-
ing, including long pants and boots, for riding. A hat can shade you from the overhead sun, while a helmet is adviseable for people new to the sport or those who want added protection. Always arrive early so that you can familiarize yourself with your horse and have him or her get to know you. Approach the horse from the front left side. Horses are prey animals and can
be skittish by nature, so a firm, calm greeting can reassure the animal. These are just a few of the many outdoor activities people can enjoy when the weather warms up. Try taking exercise routines outdoors, such as running on a path instead of the treadmill. Swimming, walking, gardening, and sports activities are other fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors.
Home Savings adds the personal touch The Westerville Real Estate Market Is HOT! to mortgage lending The Paul George Group By Deb Herman Advertising Director Shopping for a home mortgage can be confusing. Most banks have very similar rates and fees, so what should you look for when choosing a mortgage lender? “Look for a real person, someone you can connect with,” said Nick Linamen, Area Sales Manager for Home Savings & Loan. “A lot of banks today don’t even offer you a personal meeting, just a phone call or email contact. That’s what makes Home Savings so special,” he explained. Home Savings has been in this market for about 11 years with a mortgage office in Worthington. “We’re focusing more on reaching out to individuals who are looking for a mortgage that’s not only competitively priced, but also competently managed by an experienced loan officer with a personal touch,” said Linamen. The bank’s loan officers will meet with customers at their convenience … evenings, weekends, whenever and wherever is good for the customer. “Like most other banks, Home Savings offers the convenience of applying online, but if you want to meet with a loan officer that option is always open,” said Linamen.
Of course Home Savings offers loans for purchases and refinances, but the bank does offer a couple of programs that are unique. “We’re especially proud of our construction loan, which converts to a regular mortgage once the home is completed. Not many banks offer a construction loan anymore, so we’re filling a real need with this program, said Linamen. “And, qualified applicants can get a really low down payment, lower than most other mortgage loans.” Home Savings has a special FirstTime Buyers Program, too. The program offers low down payments (which can be gifted to the borrower), no mortgage insurance costs and no income restrictions. “This program makes it affordable for someone who’s still renting to become a homeowner,” said Linamen. As far as offering that personal touch … there are two experienced loan officers serving residents of this area. Linamen himself, along with Linda Tempesta, can be reached at Home Savings’ Worthington office via phone or email, or through the bank’s web site. Recognizing signs that an older adult needs help at home Don’t wait for a crisis to determine if older adults in your life are safe, happy and healthy at home. Instead, watch for signs that could indicate your loved ones are not doing as well as they want you to believe. The questions below can help you to determine if your loved ones need help at home.
Does your loved one: 1. Walk unsteadily, have unexplained bruises, or is tentative in walking or standing? One-third of older adults fall each year, often starting a downward spiral of hospital stays. In addition, those who fear falling often restrict activities, making them even weaker and more insecure — and more likely to fall. 2. Look thinner than normal? Many older adults have poor nutrition because they don’t plan or fix meals — and because they may not have enough food in the house. 3. Seem quiet or depressed? Feeling sad, regretful or fearful is not normal, even for older adults. Isolation and changes in health can lead to depression, a problem for 25% of older adults. 4. Have difficulty remembering major events? Memory problems can affect every area of an older adult’s life, from medication mistakes to unsafe driving, poor bedtime habits, and lack of personal care.
5. Have a large quantity of medications? Older adults face serious health risks if they don’t take their medication properly. If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should begin planning for the future of your loved one by assessing medical conditions, level of income/assets, and preferences for long-term care. Also think about your own capability for caregiving. How much time, energy and money can you contribute to your loved one’s needs? Whether it is 3 hours a day or 24, employees of Home Care Assistance make a difference in people’s lives by providing the highest level of service and allowing older adults to live safely and happily at home — where 89% of older adults want to stay. Thank you, central Ohio, for making us the premier provider of home care for older adults. We are honored by the trust so many families place in us!

Natural ways to beat seasonal allergies The arrival of warmer weather changes the landscape completely. Animals come out of hiding and hibernation while trees and flowers bloom anew. The spring season can be an exciting time for naturalists and lovers of the great outdoors because they can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of nature. But for many people, spring also marks the start of allergy season and spending time outdoors can become downright uncomfortable for them. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology says nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people in the United States. Allergic diseases, including asthma, are the fifth most prevalent chronic diseases among people of all ages and the third most common in children. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, can occur in spring, summer and/or early fall. People who experience hay fever often can attribute their symptoms to sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses, weeds, or airborne mold spores. No two allergy sufferers are alike, so medications that may work for one person may be only mildly effective for another. Many medications can cause side effects, which may be just as frustrating as the initial allergy symptoms. Treatments may target sneezing and itching but fail to clear up congestion. Drowsiness, dry mouth and nasal irritation may be side effects of common allergy drugs. People who want to avoid allergy
medication can look to natural remedies to alleviate their symptoms. Whether used alone or in concert with traditional medicine, these remedies may make spending time outdoors more pleasant. • Try probiotics. Probiotics, those friendly bacteria that reside in the digestive system, can do more than just treat an upset stomach. Naturopathic doctors say that probiotics also can influence the immune system and may help strengthen its response to common allergens. Since probiotics are good for replenishing healthy bacteria in the body anyway, many people may want to keep taking them once their allergy symptoms have come and gone. • Use neti pots or saline sprays. A small amount of saltwater can rinse away allergens, such as pollen, that get lodged in the nose. These rinses also can help clear up congestion and flush out any other irritants. • Load up on omega-3s. A German study published in the journal Allergy found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didnÕt regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s can help fight inflammation. Drinking more fluids and using spices in cooking can help flush out allergens as well. • Don’t forget vitamin C. Vitamin C is an immune-system booster and may help prevent the formation of histamine in the body, a substance responsible for many allergy symptoms.

Local auto dealer finds sales success not seen since the ’80s In the eight years since Lash Chevrolet opened its doors in Johnstown, they’ve increased sales to levels not seen at this location since Reagan was in the White House. But how have they achieved this remarkable growth in such a competitive automotive environment? I caught up with owner Eric Lash to get his take on things. “From day one, my goal was to bring new Chevy sales back to levels from the ’70s and ’80s,” says Lash. “With a growing community around us, I knew that all we needed to do was focus on one brand, offer great prices, and really take care of our customers— a modern approach with an oldfashioned touch.” With annual sales of over 500 new Chevrolets (almost 3 times greater than their first year in business), apparently his strategy has worked. The first thing you’ll notice when you visit the lot (located on Route 62, eight miles from New Albany) is the sheer number of vehicles. From Impalas to Corvettes, Silverados to Suburbans— there is an abundance of selection. Lash explains, “In our first year of business, we usually had about 100 new Chevys on the ground at any given time. Today, through a ‘turn and earn’ allocation system, we have grown to over 200. You can’t sell what you don’t have, and earning more inventory is a daily focus. We

with current rebates, before they even set foot on the lot. And we post several actual photos (not the usual “stock photos”) to give buyers a real feel for the specific vehicle. I think people appreciate the transparency.” The explosive growth of northeast
Columbus has also helped. “I grew up in Gahanna,” Lash says, “and it used to take 25 minutes to get to Johnstown. Today, I can leave our showroom and be in Worthington within 20 minutes. So that’s definitely helped us attract new customers. The idea is to get them to consider us. Because once they give us a try, they keep coming back.” One reason for this may be the personal touch you receive from Lash Chevrolet. Despite the newly remodeled showroom, Lash makes sure that his store retains a small-town feel: “I’ve been working at this location for over 20 years, and some employees have been here even longer. This year, salesman Larry Lane celebrates his 50th year at our location! Call me oldfashioned, but I think that kind of stuff still matters.” One step into the showroom and it was clear to me that he wasn’t exaggerating. No one ambushed me as I walked in, but a courteous salesman, named Brad, greeted me and answered all of my questions. He was low-key, yet professional. Turns out that he lives local and has worked at Lash for seven years. It was truly refreshing. So if you are looking for big city price and selection, with a small-town touch—check out LashChevy.com and then take a short eight mile drive up Route 62 off Interstate 161 to Lash Chevrolet in Johnstown.

This mom didn’t need a big hospital complex to solve a complex ankle emergency. From emergency care to orthopedic surgery, she found it all at OhioHealth Westerville Medical Campus. “Last January, in a kettleball class, I fell and rolled my ankle. I called my mom who said Westerville (Medical Campus) would be quicker and more efficient, rather than dealing with a whole hospital. The other options I needed — like my surgeon — were there, too. By April I started power walking a couple miles. By midsummer I could run about four miles. I was very pleased overall with my experience.” — Kate Letzelter, Gahanna, OH
