list of classes for students who love to dance for the overall benefit of dance, and want to become skilled dancers. For students who want a more serious level of training, there are the options of Ballet Allonge’ or Competitive Training.

Great Uptown Westerville location

Why uptown Westerville? At their first meeting with parents in 1999, it was asked, “What do you look for in a location?” The answers included: spacious, convenient, safety, parking, clean facility, something to do while the children are in class, and food nearby for those who dance long hours. That is why Generations made their home in Uptown Westerville

Ballet Allonge’: Generations’ ballet company is geared for the student who loves ballet. Local mother shares her thoughts on Generations We LOVE Generations! Summer classes were a nice way to get started with a short commitment to see if she liked it. (She did!) My favorite thing about Generations is that you value and teach each girl as an important person, not just a number. I truly appreciate how you hold the girls to task, hold them accountable, and make them work hard but you do it in a loving and kind way. I am always impressed at how much Rachel has learned each time I have the chance to observe. I feel the training is wonderful. Your recital and Christmas shows are amazing. Your values as Christians really show through and we love that! I can’t think of a better way for my daughter to spend her time. In choosing a dance studio for a younger dancer, I’d be more interested in how dance would benefit her as a person. That being said, as she gets older, it is very impressive that you train such high quality dancers that have the opportunity to travel/perform all over. She is learning dance, but also learning valuable life lessons. The competition was our first experience and I cannot tell you how impressed I was with our dancers and your choice of costumes, appropriate choreography, and rules of conduct. I was completely shocked to see how some of the other dance studios had their girls dressed, the dance moves they used, and their attire when walking around the hallway. It was quite a contrast to Generations dancers. It made me so happy as a parent. I truly want you to know how much I appreciate you! I will support Rachel dancing with you as much and as long – Ashley, mother of Generations dancer as she desires!

online registration, go to the registration page and follow the instructions. If you prefer to register by mail, you can download the form from the registration page or call and Generations will mail you a registration packet. Here are some of Generations Performing Arts Center offerings: Introductory classes: Creative Movement, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop. Creative Movement is designed for the new student ages 2 1/2 to 4 years old. All other introductory classes are offered for children ages 5 years and above. Boys classes: Exclusive Boys classes are offered in Tap and Hip Hop! Recreational Training: Generations offers an extensive

Competitive training: Students may train in four levels of competition. This gives those who want to be more involved the opportunity to do it at a level that fits their life and schedule. Students who want to train to become a professional dancer would choose to train at the highest level of competition. Call today and find out which dance classes are the best fit for you and your family.

Quality Yard & Home Maintenance offers quality service at an affordable price My name is Jeremy Nestor. My wife and I have three daughters and live in Pataskala. We attend Eagle Rock church in Pickerington. My goal with this business is to “first Honor God with our business” and then run a successful all-around company to serve customers in a small service area including and surrounding our home town. I was born and raised in Pataskala and graduated from Watkins Memorial. I am very grateful for my family, business and what God has done in my life. Our vision: Be the best company for hire by performing quality service that customers deserve, which will lead to repeat business for both our landscape and handyman departments. We are a full service lawn, landscape and home maintenance company. We

are fully insured and licensed. We offer reliable, quality lawn, landscape and home maintenance at an affordable price. Our clients are typically homeowners and business owners who outsource all of their maintenance to our one-stop shop. Are you a homeowner or business owner who doesn’t have the time and/or knowledge to handle the maintenance of your home, yard or business? Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%.

Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard. ” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for our lawn.

Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a Theater Room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

Straub Dance Center offers excellent dance training in Westerville

McKenzie McGrath, winner of many awards including “Westerville’s Got Talent.”

Being the oldest dance center in central Ohio gives Straub Dance Center many advantages. Their reputation is known all over the state, as well as the country. Strong technique and ethics are the hallmark of their dance training, however the business was formed because of a love of children and dance. While the majority of students take classes for enjoyment, poise, confidence, strength and the team spirit that is developed, Straub has trained dozens of students who have gone on to professional careers, college scholarships and dance companies. They are also known for their tasteful and appropriate music and costumes. They have been featured in the national Dance Magazine. Artistic Director, Suzy Straub has trained three NYC Rockettes, several Broadway touring company dancers as well as Beth Johnson, who is in NY appearing in her ninth Broadway Show. Anna Richardson Elliott who was in “42nd Street” and was a nine-year Rockette is currently teaching at Straub. Kathleen Voss was a Rockette and then was hired for a Professional U.S. Tap Company. Melody Pomeroy, a former Miss Dance of Ohio and Joffery Ballet Scholarship winner was Ariel in Tokyo’s Disney and also in “Oklahoma”. Jill Adler won the USA Tap Association Top Award and tied for third place in World Championships in Germany. Melynda Straub Lott danced professionally (Actor’s Equity) for 7 years starting at the age of 16. One of her early shows was “Pajama Game” with Randy Skinner (a Tony nominated choreographer) as her partner. Skinner has taught several Master classes at Straub. Melynda choreographed her daughter Christy Lott’s tap routine, which won her the title of Miss Dance of Ohio. Christy Lott Wiegand, a favorite teacher at Straub Dance Center has been a strong Performing

Arts teacher, winning her students many Top Overall awards. Christy attended Wright State University on scholarship money she received as a member of the Dayton Ballet Company, as well as scholarship money from Junior Miss. Dr. Cara Whalen, a longtime Straub student, was chosen two years in a row to attend American Ballet Theater’s Workshops. She is a physical therapist at OSU and teaches both regular classes as well as a handicapped class for young children at Straub Dance Center. Straub has had four State Winners in Ohio’s Junior Miss who have won over $30 thousand dollars in college scholarship money. (Melody Pomeroy, Westerville; Barbara Bednarczuk, Zanesville; Kathleen Voss, Powell; Emi Malik, Sunbury) Scholarships for Point Park, Ohio University, The Ohio State University, and Troy State in Alabama have all given dance scholarships to Straub Students. Nicole Gordon was given a scholarship to study in Europe while in OSU’s dance department. Straub has had top overall winners at Dance Masters of Ohio every year since 1992 and many top in the nation. Recently, Straub had 26 dancers recognized with dance scholarship awards at the Ohio Dance Masters state convention in Cleveland. Elizabeth Looby, a graduate of Straub Dance Center is currently teaching jazz at Ohio University Janet Davis, Director of the Westerville Chamber of Commerce, whose daughter danced at Straub for 12 years wrote, “We are fortunate to have a dance studio of your caliber in our community. Your dancers are noticeably welltrained.”

Safe driving techniques have changed Driving today is different than it might have been when many motorists first earned their drivers’ licenses. As a result, safe driving techniques have changed. Learning these changes and adjusting driving habits can keep motorists and their passengers safe. • Watch the clock. Older guidelines indicated keeping hands on the steering wheel at the positions of 10 and 2 if you were imagining it as a clock. New information indicates this can be dangerous to the arms and hands should the air bag deploy in a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and AAA now say you should grip the wheel at the 9 and 3 positions, which safely allows drivers to maintain control of their vehicles. • Change your turns. Air bag safety also comes into play when making turns. Rather than the formerly taught way of hand-over-hand turning, drivers should push with one hand and pull with the other to steer the wheel — safely keeping their hands away from the plastic casing and the possible release of heat and pressure from an exploding air bag. • Use hazard lights only when real hazards are encountered. Some people are very generous in their use of hazard lights, turning them

on when doubleparking, in bad weather or when they are carrying a heavy load. Various states and areas have specific laws governing the use of hazard lights, including when and when not to use them. Hazard lights may inadvertently put drivers in danger because they can override turning signals. Some other drivers have become so accustomed to seeing hazard lights that they may not take them seriously. Esurance suggests checking local laws to determine which situations warrant using hazard lights. Due to air bag safety and other factors, driving today is different than it might have been when many • Don’t block the motorists first earned their drivers’ licenses. ‘fast lane.’ The farleft lane has long will not have to speed or make adverse conditions. Mount Carmel St. Ann’s offers cutting-edge screenings, treatment for lung cancer According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women and accounts for about 27% of all cancer-related deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. The American Cancer Society estimates that there were about 221,000 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the United States in 2015. As with all types of cancers, lung cancer is most treatable when caught at an early stage. And stage 1 cancers have the best chance at being cured. In stage 1, the cancer is confined to a single area in the lung without spread to lymph nodes or other areas of the body. The problem is lung cancer can have no symptoms. That’s why annual lung screenings are so important for people at higher-than-normal risk. They can help detect lung cancer early, so that it can be comprehensively treated and, ultimately, cured. Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, right here in Westerville, offers the best screenings available – with the ability to detect even the smallest spots on the lungs. And that’s especially important for people in the highest-risk category – those between the ages of 55 and 77 who smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years.

Easy screenings Mount Carmel St. Ann’s uses

computerized tomography (CT) for lung cancer screenings, which is covered by most insurance plans. It’s an easy test that takes less than a minute and requires no specific medications or restrictions. Patients just have to hold their breath for about six seconds. When the results are in, the hospital’s Lung Program team sends them to the patient’s primary care physician along with any recommendations, follow-up instructions and any further guidance. Often, the scans show small things like lung nodules, scarring or inflammation that are not a serious concern. But in the event they uncover anything abnormal, Mount Carmel offers additional testing and access to a special Lung Nurse Navigator who can answer questions, share additional information, offer support and connect patients with other helpful resources.

Comprehensive treatment For patients who are diagnosed with lung cancer, Mount Carmel provides the highest level of care and targeted treatment, including genetic testing (which is used to look at the genetic makeup of the cancer involved and determine which treatments will work best for each individual patient), the latest minimally invasive and robotic surgery procedures, advanced radiation therapy and access to clinical trials. No matter

the treatment plan, though, the lung care team at St. Ann’s works aggressively and compassionately. Surgery is the most common treatment for early stage lung cancer. Mount Carmel offers Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (or VATS), which enables the surgeon to see inside the chest cavity using a small camera inserted through very small incisions and to remove lung masses. VATS, and minimally invasive approaches like it, are not only very precise, but also allow patients to have fewer days in the hospital and less recovery time overall. “Treatment options for lung cancer are getting better every day, and there are more now than ever before,” said Mount Carmel thoracic surgeon Dr. Kevin Radecki. “Mount Carmel’s commitment to genetic testing and the latest surgical procedures is giving our patients the best chance they’ve ever had at beating this disease.” Some patients have inoperable lung cancers or aren’t candidates for surgery. In those cases, the Mount Carmel lung care team uses chemotherapy and radiation to shrink tumors, relieve symptoms and, in some cases, even provide a cure. Others can’t tolerate surgery due to other medical problems (like lung or heart disease) or older age. For them there’s an excellent, non-invasive, highly effective, and very well-

tolerated treatment option called Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy (SABR). And it’s available exclusively at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s. SABR delivers very highdose x-ray treatment to the tumor(s) while limiting radiation exposure to the critical normal tissues nearby. In the case of stage 1 lung cancers, where the tumor is limited to a small area of the lung and hasn’t spread, SABR has proven very effective. SABR treatments are done at Columbus CyberKnife on the St. Ann’s campus using the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System. During the treatment, hundreds of highly concentrated and incredibly precise beams of radiation are targeted directly to any tumors and lesions. As the patient breathes, the CyberKnife robotic arm moves with the rise and fall of his or her body so that healthy tissue is protected. It’s a painless outpatient treatment that’s usually delivered in 3-5 separate sessions that last about an hour each. Most patients have few, if any, side effects. “Advanced treatments like SABR are giving more lung cancer patients more options and more chances to get the treatment they need,” said Mount Carmel radiation oncologist Dr. Abhay Gokhale. “Mount Carmel has always been on the leading edge of testing and treatment, and

St. Ann’s has been a big part of that. It’s an incredible resource to have in this community.”

A simple process Of course, receiving these potentially life-saving treatments depends on getting screened in time for them to be effective. For those who are at risk, a physician referral is all that’s required to have a Lung Screening CT. In addition to being easy, the screening can also be very affordable. In fact, many insurance companies cover the cost of a lung screening. Total out-of-pocket expenses can vary depending on specific insurance plans, of course, so it’s important to determine the level of coverage available in advance. For those who need treatment, though, St. Ann’s is an ideal place to get it. Mount Carmel is accredited as a Network Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons, having committed to provide the highest level of cancer care and undergo rigorous evaluations and performance reviews to ensure that care continues to be of the highest possible quality. And it’s all available right here in Westerville. 8 ways kids can go green Raising eco-friendly children is less complicated than it once was. From very early ages, today’s kids are exposed to environmental topics and how they can do their part to maintain and protect the planet’s resources. Between activities at daycare and lessons at school to information they receive from educational television programming, some kids are taking their own environmental initiatives — and involving their parents along the way. Inspiring children to be eco-friendly can be enjoyable and get those creative juices flowing. The following are eight ways children and their families can work together to protect the environment. 1. Precycle. Kids can attempt to reduce waste by recognizing products that could be wasteful and then avoiding those items. Toys or everyday items with excessive packaging that we use without thinking are just some examples of items that can be precycled. 2. Repurpose. Look at items that normally end up

in the trash and find new and fun ways to repurpose them. Children can make crafts out of junk mail, catalogs and old newspapers. Juice boxes or plastic containers can be turned into boats or accessories for dolls and action figures. Use natural materials found in the yard or on a nature walk to make a fairy garden or imaginative world for small toys. 3. Reuse. Toting lunch or snacks around can be more eco-friendly when reusable containers are part of the equation. Explore the many lunch bags, beverage cups, thermoses, Bento boxes, and other packaging available. Many are made from recycled materials as well. 4. Walk. Encourage getting around without firing up the car. Walking, jogging, biking, or scootering around the neighborhood is more eco-friendly than driving. Many adventures can unfold when seeing the world from a pedestrian’s vantage point, but things are easily missed when riding inside cars or trucks. 5. Conserve water. Lessons

Many adventures can unfold when seeing the world from a pedestrian’s vantage point. Walking, jogging, biking or scootering around the neighborhood are all more eco-friendly than driving. learned in conservation are important. Water is one resource that is crucial to human life. Kids can explore ways to cut down on water consumption or use water more efficiently. The environmental resource Green Lifestyle Changes says that a 10-minute shower with a standard shower head can

use upward of 80 gallons of water and generate up to four pounds of CO2 emissions. Simply reducing shower time can save energy and water. There are other ways to conserve as well. Make it a family project to collect rain water to use for washing cars or watering plants. 6. Rent rather than buy.

From toys to video games to movies, people have more entertainment options than ever before. And nowadays it’s easy to access a fresh supply of entertainment without making purchases that require the manufacturing of new items. Streaming rented content rather than buying packaged versions can reduce waste in a number of ways. 7. Turn off/turn down. Turn off lights, appliances, electronics, and much more when they’re not in use. Also, encourage children (of an appropriate age) to unplug certain electronics so appliances aren’t consuming electricity while in standby mode, which is called vampire power. 8. Change body care products. Introduce kids to earth-friendly soaps, shampoos, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Children are the next generation to take on the task of protecting the planet. When they begin an eco-friendly lifestyle early on, they may be more likely to employ the same strategies in adulthood. (MNS)

Simple ways to fight back against fatigued eyes Eyestrain affects people from all walks of life. Many professionals suffer eyestrain as a result of too many hours spent staring at computer screens. The same can be said for children, who might spend hours doing homework on their computers before hitting the couch for a few spirited rounds of video games. Before you can combat eyestrain, it’s best to confirm that your vision troubles are the result of eyestrain and not something more serious. Eye doctors can provide such confirmation, but you can also be on the lookout for common symptoms of eyestrain.

Symptoms of eyestrain The Mayo Clinic notes that the following are some symptoms of eyestrain that can pop up when eyes are overused. • Sore, tired, burning, or itching eyes • Abnormally watery eyes • Abnormally dry eyes • Blurred or double vision • Headache • Increased sensitivity to light • Feeling that you cannot keep your eyes open How to address eyestrain If eyestrain is causing your vision problems, then there are some ways to remedy your problems.

• Adjust lighting. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that reducing glare from the screen can reduce symptoms of eyestrain. If necessary, use a screen filter when staring at a computer screen. When you will be spending long hours at a desk, the Mayo Clinic suggests lighting your work area with a shaded light positioned in front of you. Such an arrangement can prevent light from shining directly into your eyes. • Take frequent breaks. Another way to combat eyestrain is to take frequent breaks from whatever your eyes are focusing on. When sitting at your desk, look away from your monitor. The

Mayo Clinic notes that looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes can provide the respite your eyes need. • Make yourself cry (artificially). Artifical tears are a proactive way to combat eyestrain. The AAO notes that artificial tears, which are over-thecounter products that can be found at many pharmacies, can refresh dry eyes. But artificial tears also can be used to prevent eyes from drying out. Even if your eyes feel normal, a few drops of artificial tears can keep them lubricated and prevent the onset of eyestrain.
