Power of a positive attitude A balanced diet, exercise, genetics, and even certain medications can work in concert to make a person healthy.

But a person’s demeanor also can factor into personal health.

The Mayo Clinic says that whether or not a person is an optimist or a pessimist can affect many areas of his or her health and well-being, and those who see the glass as half-full may ultimately be healthier than those who see it as half-empty.

Positive thinking can make it easier to manage stress.

The body responds differently based on an individual’s mood, and it may produce stress hormones if a person’s outlook is negative. Such stress hormones can compromise the immune system, increase blood pressure and even reduce the body’s ability to burn fat effectively. Thinking negatively and being on edge also can increase a person’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease and aging prematurely.

Conversely, maintaining a positive attitude can be good for your health. Studies have shown that thinking positively can lower rates of depression and anxiety, increase life expectancy and provide greater resistance to certain illnesses, such as the common cold. A 2012 preliminary study from researchers at Stanford University found that daughters of mothers suffering from depression were able to witness their own stress levels go down on a real-time brain scan as they switched from negative thoughts to happy ones.

Researchers are unsure why positive thinking has such profound effects. But in addition to limiting stress-releasing hormones, positive thinking may inspire people to live healthier lifestyles that make them more likely to get routine physical activity and eat a healthy diet. Happy people also may be less likely to use tobacco products or alcohol as a coping mechanism when dealing with elevated stress

According to Bruce Gordon, MD, a professor at Harvard University and an ear, nose and throat allergy specialist, ragweed has a distinct season. Its pollen is produced in abundance between late-summer and mid-fall. In warmer climates, ragweed may continue to cause allergy symptoms into the winter.

How hosts can save some money and still throw a party to remember Hosting a party is a fun way to get together with friends and family members. When hosting at home, hosts enjoy the added benefit of not having to travel to get home once the party has ended.

But as fun as hosting can be, it’s also a significant responsibility that requires a little elbow grease and often a significant financial commitment on the part of hosts.

Many hosts find themselves stretching their budgets in an effort to throw the most enjoyable and memorable party possible. But there are ways to save money and still throw a bash no one is likely to forget anytime soon.

Make it a potluck or BYOB event Guests typically offer to bring something to parties, so hosts who want to keep their party budget in check can take visitors up on their offers to contribute something to the festivities. Casual parties can be turned into potluck affairs in which each guest brings a dish, be it an appetizer, main course or dessert, for all to enjoy. More formal affairs can still borrow from potluck dinners, but limit food requests to desserts so the meal is not held up by late arrivals.

Another way to save is the make the party a bring your own booze, or BYOB, affair. The cost of alcohol for an adults-only affair can quickly add up, but asking each guest to bring their own alcohol relieves hosts of such financial obligations.

be extra charges for nonmembers, but even when such charges are included, you might still be able to save some money.

cups half-and-half or milk large egg yolks cup sugar ounces butterscotch chips, divided cup heavy whipping cream teaspoon vanilla extract

Prepare a large bowl or pan of ice water.

In the top of a double boiler, heat the halfand-half over simmering water until steaming.

In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks until blended, then whisk in the sugar. Whisk in about half of the hot half-and-half and pour the yolk mixture into the pan of half-and-half. Stir with a silicone spatula or spoon and cook over simmering water for about 8 minutes.

Stir in 1 cup of the chips and continue stirring until blended in and the custard coats the back of the spatula, about 2 minutes more. Immediately place the custard pan in the ice bath and stir the custard occasionally until it cools to room temperature. Transfer to a container and stir in the cream and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 3 hours.

Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When the ice cream is almost frozen, add the remaining 1 cup chips and churn until blended in, about 15 seconds more. Transfer to a container, cover and freeze until firm, about 2 hours.

J.A.Z. Dance wins in South Carolina competition J.A.Z. Dance & More is starting its 20th year in business this September. We offer Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Lyrical, Tumbling, Combination, Competition and Zumba. We are located in Reynoldsburg at 7354 French Drive. We offer classes for 2 1/2 years through adults, beginning through advanced levels and for boys and girls. We are very excited this year to be adding adult Tap and Hip Hop classes. We have eight teachers on our staff with four classrooms. We have spring step flooring and every classroom has a viewing window.

We had thirty-one dancers and their families travel to Charleston, SC, for National Dance competition this past June. The dancers brought home many platinum awards and our production number was invited to perform in the Best of the Best Show. Our competition team travels every other year and it is a great team bonding trip for the students and families. We strive to be more than a dance school; we want to be an extended family.

We have many students who dance just for the fun of it and also many that are more serious dancers. We have an annual spring recital in June. This coming June will be our 20th recital, and we are so excited!

Dance class not only teaches children how to dance but it is great exercise, teaches self

confidence, discipline, creates self esteem, and also helps with social skills.

We have two open houses this year where you can meet the teachers and see the facility. Sunday, August 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, August

27 from 6 to 8 p.m.. Fall classes start September 2nd.

Our Zumba classes are a fun way to exercise! We offer classes Monday and Wednesday at 7:15 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday at 9:15 a.m., and Saturday at 8:45 a.m. It is drop-in,

no registration required — $5 per class or we sell a ten class punch card for $35.

Some of our dancers will be performing Saturday, August 16 at 10 a.m. at the Tomato Festival and we also will have a booth in the business tent

Make sure your child sees you reading to gain knowledge and for entertainment. Talk about your favorite childhood books and introduce them to your child.

• Make reading together interactive. Don’t rush to “finish” the book. Ask your child questions about illustrations and characters; encourage your child to make predictions and observations about the story; invite your child to “retell” the story; and take turns reading out loud.

• Have your child read you a book. Even pre-readers will enjoy “reading” to you if you pick a book that they know well. Turn the pages as they tell you the story, prompted by their memory and the book’s illustrations.
