The importance of a strong Pre-K experience While many parents are reluctant to see their little ones enter the challenging world of academia, they should consider the advantages of a full-time pre-school program. Village Academy Schools know that now, more than ever, the pre-school experience is the foundation for kindergarten and beyond. According to Tres Marangoni, Dean of Students and Curriculum Development for Village Academy Schools, “Our job is to determine how a child learns, what sparks excitement in that student, and then teach that student with those strengths in mind.” The Pre-K program, based on Mastery through Exploration is the foundation for developing a resourceful, independent thinker. Learning through real-life experience, problem solving,
self-directed, creative and innovative projects and problems, allow for the creation of real knowledge. Village Academy Pre-K students learn by doing hands-on experiments, risktaking, problem solving and cooperative learning. As a result students are better prepared for analytical and critical thinking challenges as they prepare for the next level at Village Academy, which involves Advancement through Mastery in grades K-12. Advancement through Mastery allows students to progress through various subjects by skill level rather than grade level. For information on Village Academy Schools, Pre-K through grade 12, visit the website at villageacademy.org or for a personal tour call (614) 841-0050.

A new you is waiting! I am a nurse with a passion for health, wellness and prevention! The last 12 years I have watched patients, family members and friends struggle through chronic health conditions like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Did you know that two out of three Americans are overweight? Something has to change. Our system is broken and in need of a major overhaul. A few years ago, I myself began struggling with health problems. I went to several doctors and tried many different medications. The side effects from the medication often made me feel worse. That’s when I began to look into the root cause of my problems and found a more natural approach. I started making simple changes to my diet and lifestyle that greatly improved my overall health. I couldn’t believe how simple nutrition and lifestyle changes could make such an impact. That’s when I decided to become a health coach. I have made it my mission to help others make simple natural changes to create healthy lifestyles and improve
overall health. I will help you create a completely personalized “roadmap to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences and goals. Are you ready to get started? I have a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means that I look at how all areas of your life are connected. As we work together, we will look at how different parts of your life affect your health as a whole. My approach is not to dwell on calories, carbs, fats and proteins. It is not to create lists of restrictions. Instead, I work with my clients to create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible, fun and rewarding. Let’s get started! Full range of services offered at BMV The Powell License Agency, your local Deputy Registrar Agency is an independent contractor, and as part of the division of the Ohio BMV, offers a wide range of services at a convenient community location in Powell. Located at 256 W. Olentangy St., the agency provides a range of motor vehicle related services: Driver’s License Issuance, State of Ohio ID Card, Disability Placard, Vehicle Registration and Tags and 30-Day Temporary Registration, Title Transfer and Title Services, and Abstract Driving Records. Driver’s License Issuance A driver’s license will normally expire on the fifth birthday after issuance. There is an exception for drivers between the ages of 16 and 21. A driver’s license can be renewed any time prior to its expiration date. However, if an Ohio license is renewed more than 90 days prior to its normal expiration date, the license will expire on the customer’s fourth birthday (three years plus the customer’s upcoming birthday) from the date of issuance. Once a license has expired past six months, the applicant must apply for a temporary instruction permit and then take all the necessary examinations before they can receive a permit, license or endorsement. State of Ohio ID Card In Ohio, you cannot hold an Ohio driver license and Identification Card at the same time. Ohio Identification Cards, are used for identification only. You cannot use this card for driving privileges. Ohio Identification Cards are valid for four years, expiring on the applicant’s birthday. There is no minimum age for obtaining an Ohio Identification Card. Disability Placard For individuals, the application must be accompanied with a prescription from the health care provider. The prescription must state the date, the name of the person with the disability, the health care provider’s signature, state that it is for a disability placard and state the expected duration of the disabling condition. A statement on the health care provider’s letterhead is acceptable in lieu of the prescription stating the required information. For organizations, placards are issued to organizations, public or private, which transport persons with disabilities on a
regular basis in a motor vehicle that has not been altered with special equipment for use by persons with disabilities. You may obtain two placards per application. Placards must be renewed every five years. Vehicle Registration The first time you register your vehicle you will need the original Certificate of Title or Memorandum Certificate of Title. These are the documents that prove ownership. The title must be notarized and contain the Clerk of Court’s seal. A photocopy of a title is not an acceptable document even if it is notarized or certified. An Ohio Title may be obtained at the County Clerk of Courts. Only the owner(s) or individuals with power of attorney from the owner may apply for registration of a vehicle. If the vehicle is leased, a power of attorney from the leasing company is required. Abstract Driving Records Driving records may only be obtained by qualified individuals. License agency customers may purchase driving records for themselves; for others, upon written consent; and for other individuals who qualify to receive driving record information. A driver license abstract contains an individual’s three-year record of violations and accidents. The agency also offers: BCI/FBI WebCheck Finger Printing Services and Notary Services. Through Webcheck, agencies send fingerprints and other data electronically to BCI, to be compared against a database of criminal fingerprints to determine if an individual has a criminal record. BCI then issues a background report that helps schools, hospitals, daycare centers and other employers make critical hiring decisions. Please stop by The Powell License Agency to see our full range of services, Monday through Saturday. You’re at home in Powell. Welcome home!

Fun ways to be a fit family Obesity is a global epidemic affecting people of all ages. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of Americans are considered obese, while Statistics Canada notes about 25 percent of Canadians are obese. Being overweight or obese has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer, and children who are overweight are likely to be overweight or obese adults. While eating a diet that is low in fat and high in whole-grain fiber, vegetables and lean proteins is important, exercise remains one of the key factors in maintaining a healthy weight. However, many adults and children simply do not get enough exercise during the day. An active lifestyle is often hampered by the prevalence of digital devices or sedentary jobs that encourage more screen time than fitness time. But there are ways for the entire family to get fit. Exercising together is not just a great way for families to get healthy, but also a great opportunity to spend time together. The following are a handful of ways families can work together to incorporate more exercise into their daily lives. • Tackle chores. Yes, tasks around the house can count as exercise. Working together not only gets you moving but also cuts down on the time it takes to tackle tasks around the house. Mowing the lawn, vacuuming the rugs, sweeping the floor — all of these activities can get the heart pumping. Make it fun by setting chores to music or competing against one another to see who gets their task done first or the best. • Compete in the pool. Swimming is a lowimpact activity that works many muscles in the body. Taking a dip in the pool can be both relaxing and beneficial to your health. Compete with family members to make the most of the time spent in the water. Host relay swimming races, see how long each member of the family can tread water or create any other competitions that keep everyone in the pool moving.
• Create an outdoor obstacle course. Set up a series of obstacles in your yard and host your own triathlon. You can jump through tires, climb through tubes and scale trees. Make it fun by having adults try to ride tricycles or pair up an adult with a child for sack races. The opportunities for fun are only hampered by your imagination. • Go for family bicycle rides. Traverse your neighborhood or blaze new trails by riding bikes together. Young children can be strapped into trailers that are pulled behind the bike or ride in seats attached to the bike itself. This gives everyone a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and hone their cycling skills. • Go hiking. Hiking is another fun family activity that also happens to make for great exercise. Choose a trail that may not be level and push everyone’s endurance to the test. • Stroll the beach at one of Ohio’s state parks. (MNS)

Buying local has many benefits. But while consumers may know that buying local helps grow the local economy by supporting local business owners and creating jobs, they may not realize the positive impact that buying local can have on the environment as well. Eco-conscious consumers often go to great lengths to ensure their money is being spent in an environmentally friendly way. But one of the easiest ways to be an eco-friendly consumer is to support local businesses, which tend to benefit the environment in a variety of ways. • Shopping locally reduces the environmental impact of your purchases. When buying from a large national chain store, chances are the products you’re purchasing were produced outside of your local community, oftentimes halfway across the globe. That means those products had to be shipped to reach the store shelves in your community. Such shipping leads to greater fuel consumption and air pollution. But local businesses often buy their supplies from other local businesses, cutting down on shipping and, as a result, benefitting the environment. • Local businesses often operate from the center of town. Local businesses typically need less space for their stores, which allows them to set up shop right in the
heart of town as opposed to on the town’s outskirts. That makes local businesses more accessible to community residents, who might be able to walk or take a short bike ride to smaller, local businesses. On the contrary, larger chains tend to diversify their offerings and, as
a result, need more space. This often pushes them to the fringes of towns, eliminating the possibility of walking to the store. That means consumers will have to drive to the store, increasing their fuel consumption and their carbon footprint as a result. • Shopping locally employs your neighbors, reducing their carbon footprints as well. Another benefit to shopping locally that’s often overlooked is the impact it can have on your neighbors’ carbon footprint. Local businesses often employ members of the community, which translates to shorter commutes, less highway congestion and less fuel consumption. So while shopping locally reduces your carbon footprint, it’s also helping members of your community reduce their own potentially negative impact on the environment. • Shopping locally can protect local wildlife. Many people prefer to buy locally grown foods because they feel such foods are more fresh and buying locally grown foods reduces fuel consumption. Those things are true, but buying locally grown foods also can help protect local wildlife. When local farms can afford to stay in operation, local farmers are far less likely to sell their lands to developers. That can help protect the habitats of local wildlife.

Exploring the amazing health benefits of reading It can be hard for some people to pick up a book when there are so many distractions at the ready. But while books might not be as flashy as the latest must-have gadget, they can provide benefits that might surprise even the most avid readers. In addition to the intellectual benefits of reading, indulging in a good book can also boost physical health. According to Ken Pugh, PhD, president and director of research at Haskins Laboratories, which is devoted to the science of language, when a person is reading “parts of the brain that have evolved for other functions connect in a specific neural circuit for reading, which is very challenging.” Just like muscles in the body, the brain benefits when it is pushed beyond its normal abilities, and reading is a great way to push those limits. But the benefits of reading do not stop there. Reading can help reduce stress, benefitting the body in numerous ways. A 2009 University of Sussex study found that turning to a good book can be an effective relaxation strategy when things become too stressful. Reading fiction can stimulate the imagination and distract a person from the stressors in everyday life. Choosing a humorous or uplifting story can boost mood and help people relax, particularly when reading before bedtime. Reading also can help men and women get a better night’s rest. People who are accustomed to reading books before going to bed actually train their mind and body for relaxation. Picking
up a book can send signals that it is time to settle down and get ready for sleep. Health experts often recommend developing a sleep routine to people who struggle to fall asleep at night, and reading for 30 minutes before bed each night can be an integral part of such routines. Research has shown that reading and engaging the brain in other ways, such as through intellectual games and puzzles, can stave off dementia. These activities stimulate the cells in the brain to grow and connect, increasing the power of brain tissue. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, keeping the mind active through reading can strengthen connections between brain cells and build up brain cell reserves. Mental activity might even generate new brain cells. All of these factors can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. According to a paper from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, reading can stimulate the brain to produce more white matter. White matter works together with gray matter and is responsible for sending sensory and motor stimuli to the central nervous system to stimulate a response. Healthy white matter keeps the central nervous system working effectively and may reduce risk of learning disabilities as well as impaired motor functions. The educational benefits of reading are widely known. But reading also provides a host of other benefits.

KEMBA is proud to serve Powell The Credit Union has better rates, lower fees and people who care
KEMBA Financial Credit Union opened its doors to the Powell community in October 2013, and is proud to serve this influential and growing central Ohio community. What first began as the Credit Union for Kroger Bakery employees in 1933 has since grown to be the largest credit union in central Ohio, serving more than 70,000 members and the employees of more than 150 central Ohio companies. Since its inception, KEMBA has served the community as a not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned by its membership. Simply put, KEMBA is not a bank, it is a financial partner. In general, credit unions are a smart alternative to banks because you are an owner, not just a customer. In fact, because KEMBA exists solely to serve its members (customers), not third-party stock holders, profits are returned to its membership in the form of lower fees, and better rates; and, credit unions, like KEMBA, offer all the same financial products as banks. KEMBA’s main purpose is to promote thrift and decisions are made locally and with the members’ best interests in mind. KEMBA representatives are always happy to meet with members to help them make
KEMBA’s Powell location at 4078 Powell Road the right decisions specific to their individual financial needs. A common misconception about credit unions is a lack of convenient locations. Many credit unions, like KEMBA, participate in a Shared Branching Network which allows members to conduct account transactions at more than 5,000 credit unions nationwide. Plus, members can utilize nearly 50,000 ATMs across the country without
paying a surcharge fee. As part of KEMBA’s mission to offer competitive financial services that contribute to the well being of its members and their families, KEMBA is pleased to provide free credit counseling services to its membership. Certified financial counselors can help members examine their financial situation, and recommend solutions. In addition, KEMBA provides retirement planning and investment services
to help its members create individualized plans to meet their needs. Like larger financial institutions, KEMBA also serves the small business community. Products such as checking and savings are available, but also small business loans and merchant services. KEMBA is committed to providing small business owners with the tools needed to manage their finances. Financial security is a sig-
nificant benefit of credit union membership, for both personal and business accounts. Credit union deposits are insured up to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, similar to insurance at a bank; but on top of that, KEMBA provides an additional $250,000 in private deposit insurance. Simply put, KEMBA is a safe, solid and sound financial option for central Ohio families and businesses. When you choose a credit union, you are not only choosing a better way to bank for yourself and your family, but you are also choosing to keep your money local. Credit unions pride themselves on being an asset in their communities, and KEMBA is proud to offer community support in Powell and throughout central Ohio.

How to go green at the grocery store While adopting an ecofriendly lifestyle might seem like a major commitment, many people find such an endeavor is far easier than they initially expected, as some relatively minor modifications here or there can make a substantial impact on the environment. One of the easiest ways to go green is to make more eco-friendly choices at the grocery store. Shopping for and preparing meals can be done in an eco-friendly way, and men and women will be happy to know they’re not only making changes that benefit the planet but their personal health as well. Here are some ideas for going green at the grocery store that do not require a big commitment. • Begin in the produce aisle. When shopping for produce, stock up on plenty of organic fruits and vegetables, which are now readily available at many grocery stores. Stick to organic for the “dirty dozen” foods, those which are the most likely to have high levels of residual pesticides and herbicides. Even produce that is not labeled “organic” may be organic. To determine if it is, look at the sticker codes on
Eco-friendly shoppers can focus on organic items, including produce, to decrease their carbon footprints. the fruits and vegetables. A four-digit code means it was conventionally grown, while five-digit codes starting with an eight indicate genetically modified food. A five-digit code starting with nine indicates the item is organic. While shopping, ask the produce manager if the store sells locally grown produce, and purchase only those products when they
are available. • Buy only what you need. Shoppers are often tempted to go from aisle to aisle, buying items they both need and don’t need. Caving in to such temptation can be wasteful unless items purchased have long shelf lives. Before visiting the store, make a shopping list and stick with it. Not only will you save money, but you will avoid throwing out spoiled
foods as well. • Purchase store-made items. If you’re looking for deli meats or bread for dinner, visit the stores’ bakeries, kitchens and delis, where employees cook foods right inside of the supermarket, a practice that cuts down on shipping of premade frozen foods produced elsewhere. Many stores carry their own homemade breads, cakes, doughnuts, dinner
entrees, and sandwiches. • Ask questions in the meat department. Don’t be shy about asking store butchers where the beef and chicken for sale comes from. If the meat and poultry is not locally raised and all-natural, look for alternatives in the store or shop elsewhere. • Shop only the perimeter of the store. Many stores stock dietary staples along the outer edges of the store. The interior bulk of the store contains packaged, processed foods that are not as eco-friendly. • Buy in bulk whenever possible. Stock up on staples like toilet paper and other items. Bulk items are packaged together, which reduces the amount of packaging needed. Separate meat and poultry into smaller portion sizes at home before freezing. • Bring reusable tote bags. Even though many plastic shopping bags are made from recycled materials, many of these bags end up in the trash after use. Reusable cloth bags are more eco-friendly. Just be sure to wash them frequently so you clean them of any bacteria that may accumulate over time. (MNS)
