Chill away the pain with Cryotherapy Cryotherapy is a localized or whole-body exposure to subzero temperatures used to cool the surface of the body in order to stimulate the bodies’ natural antiinflammatory response, release endorphins, reduce muscular pain and spasms, boost cellular survival and promote one’s overall health. During our signature cryofacial treatments, liquid nitrogen vapors are applied to the face to stimulate the production of collagen and decrease pore size. Through this process, the skin becomes tighter, more even-toned and blood circulation is improved. Over time, skin becomes more elastic due to the increase in collagen. Cryotherapy is not a medical procedure, but a non-invasive alternative for individuals seeking a faster recovery time, a mood-enhancing endorphin release and younger, more healthylooking skin tone. 1075 Beecher Crossing Suite D Gahanna (614) 656-7372 chillcolumbus.com

Innovations in early childhood education Remember your own preschool days? Posters covering the walls, brightly painted classrooms, crafts, circle time with alphabet flashcards and worksheets as part of the daily routine? If you plan on sending your preschooler to any of today’s top quality preschools, you’re highly unlikely to find anything listed above. As a leader in early childhood education, Ready Set Grow implements HighScope in all of their classrooms. HighScope revolutionized early childhood education with a new approach to teaching and learning. Research based and child focused, the HighScope Curriculum uses a carefully designed process—called “active participatory learning”—to achieve powerful,

positive outcomes. As teachers, parents and educational researchers have discovered, the HighScope Preschool Curriculum not only helps young children excel in language and cognitive learning but also promotes independence, curiosity, decision-making, cooperation, persistence, creativity and problem solving—the fundamental skills that help determine success in adult life. 1 “It’s simply a natural way of learning,” says Amy Eick, Director of Administration at Ready Set Grow, “When a child is curious about something and is allowed to explore it, encouraged by the adult community, he or she is most likely to master the concept

or the skill. Our teachers encourage this curiosity to help students grow as individual, unique children.” This is the philosophy that Ready Set Grow tries to embody every day in their curriculum and approach to early childhood education. Ready Set Grow’s approach is unique in New Albany and it is known for remaining ahead of the educational curve. Their large, three-building campus has sunshine in every classroom, large play areas, modern natural decor, and a staff that is specially trained to provide a rich, individualized and child-centered experience for every child. ‘The Cooperative Difference’ The Energy Cooperative, a notfor-profit energy enterprise founded in 1936, is headquartered in Newark and serves more than 62,000 electric, natural gas and propane members in 14 counties throughout east-central Ohio. It is under the direct control of its member/consumers who elect directors to oversee cooperative operations. From its inception, The Energy Cooperative has been guided by one strategy throughout—an emphasis on people, not profit. It’s that strategy which makes the cooperative difference and allows local people to ensure for themselves the best possible rates and service quality to meet their needs. The foundation for the success of The Energy Cooperative can be found in the Seven Principles that are the framework for doing business: 1. Voluntary and Open Membership 2. Democratic Member Control 3. Member’s Economic Participation 4. Autonomy and Independence 5. Education, Training and Information 6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives 7. Concern for Community The cooperative has more than 165 employees with a wide variety of experience and talent. These employees support the principle framework by being committed to providing safe and reliable energy to our member/owners with highly-responsive service. The Energy Cooperative strives to ensure that the communities we serve are enhanced due to our presence. The cooperative continues to expand its reach with electric and natural

gas service to meet the energy needs of consumers in western Licking County. The Energy Cooperative recently completed the construction of The Smith’s Mill Substation near the intersection of Jug Street and Beech Road in New Albany. This substation

currently serves 670 members with the potential to serve more residential, commercial and industrial members in the New Albany and Johnstown areas. At the same time the cooperative is expanding its natural gas service in the Johnstown area and is now fueling

Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices neighborhood is located at 6127 Harlem Road.

A new approach to rehab and nursing care in New Albany NEW ALBANY, OH - In 2014 Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices opened a new neighborhood in New Albany, Ohio. Now, almost a year later that neighborhood is home to many elders. When family and friends visit loved ones at the New Albany Otterbein Neighborhood, they pull up to something they did not expect when they heard the term “nursing home”. New Albany is one of many Skilled Nursing and Rehab neighborhoods featuring the small home concept pioneered by Otterbein. Otterbein invested

in the small house model as early as 2007, and is the leading provider in the United States today. “The small house model is one of the most exciting concepts for skilled nursing that exists today, and represents the future of long-term and rehab care. The model is designed to get away from institutional nursing home environments and provide something better—a model with self-directed work teams and resident-centered care, all in a truly home-like environment,” said Nathan Gruber,

vice president of small house neighborhoods for Otterbein. An Otterbein small-house neighborhood consists of five homes, each with 10 occupants in a residential setting. Each home includes private, customizable suites for residents as well as a common living room and dining, kitchen and spa/salon areas. The “great room” concept means that residents have short walks to wherever they’d like to go. Care delivery is personcentered; residents determine their own schedules, and their preferences are honored. Re-

hab is done in a home-like setting, helping short term guests to get back to their everyday activities and get home sooner. There are specific houses in each neighborhood dedicated to rehab care only, and each house acts as its own therapy gym with exercises that mimic regular everyday activities and encourage recovery and independence. Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices currently maintains five full-service lifestyle communities (Lebanon, Cridersville, North Shore, Portage Valley and St. Marys);

six skilled nursing and rehabilitation neighborhoods (Maineville, Springboro, Middletown, Monclova, Perrysburg and New Albany; with three in development in Gahanna, Union Township and Loveland); and a southwestern Ohio-based home health and hospice agency. The New Albany neighborhood accepts traditional insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. For more information or to reserve your private suit please call Nikki at (614) 981-06854.

Local auto dealer finds sales success not seen since the ’80s In the eight years since Lash Chevrolet opened its doors in Johnstown, they’ve increased sales to levels not seen at this location since Reagan was in the White House. But how have they achieved this remarkable growth in such a competitive automotive environment? I caught up with owner Eric Lash to get his take on things. “From day one, my goal was to bring new Chevy sales back to levels from the ’70s and ’80s,” says Lash. “With a growing community around us, I knew that all we needed to do was focus on one brand, offer great prices, and really take care of our customers— a modern approach with an oldfashioned touch.” With annual sales of over 500 new Chevrolets (almost 3 times greater than their first year in business), apparently his strategy has worked. The first thing you’ll notice when you visit the lot (located on Route 62, eight miles from New Albany) is the sheer number of vehicles. From Impalas to Corvettes, Silverados to Suburbans— there is an abundance of selection. Lash explains, “In our first year of business, we usually had about 100 new Chevys on the ground at any given time. Today, through a ‘turn and earn’ allocation system, we have grown to over 200. You can’t sell what you don’t have, and earning more inventory is a daily focus. We

Lash Chevrolet is located on Rt 62, eight miles from New Albany, visit their website at LashChevy.com to see their current inventory. even contact struggling dealers and purchase their excess inventory.” In addition, Lash says that the dealership’s online strategy has also boosted sales: “We keep it simple. Customers can visit LashChevy.com to see the price of every new vehicle

with current rebates, before they even set foot on the lot. And we post several actual photos (not the usual “stock photos”) to give buyers a real feel for the specific vehicle. I think people appreciate the transparency.” The explosive growth of northeast

Columbus has also helped. “I grew up in Gahanna,” Lash says, “and it used to take 25 minutes to get to Johnstown. Today, I can leave our showroom and be in Worthington within 20 minutes. So that’s definitely helped us attract new customers. The idea is to get them to consider us. Because once they give us a try, they keep coming back.” One reason for this may be the personal touch you receive from Lash Chevrolet. Despite the newly remodeled showroom, Lash makes sure that his store retains a small-town feel: “I’ve been working at this location for over 20 years, and some employees have been here even longer. This year, salesman Larry Lane celebrates his 50th year at our location! Call me oldfashioned, but I think that kind of stuff still matters.” One step into the showroom and it was clear to me that he wasn’t exaggerating. No one ambushed me as I walked in, but a courteous salesman, named Brad, greeted me and answered all of my questions. He was low-key, yet professional. Turns out that he lives local and has worked at Lash for seven years. It was truly refreshing. So if you are looking for big city price and selection, with a small-town touch—check out LashChevy.com and then take a short eight mile drive up Route 62 off Interstate 161 to Lash Chevrolet in Johnstown.

Blended families present unique estate planning challenges Thanks to changes in state and federal estate tax law, the vast majority of people do not need a complex or expensive estate plan. The Federal Estate tax exemption now stands at $5.43 million per person, which is indexed to inflation and no longer has a sunset provision meaning that law is on auto-pilot unless Congress changes it. Ohio has eliminated its estate tax. Cumulatively, these changes have allowed estate planning to shift focus from taxavoidance to objectives such as family harmony. Family disharmony can arise in any estate planning situation but the blended family is the most common source of potential angst. In a traditional family, the children may have competing interests, but the parents rarely do. They generally want to provide equally for their children. In a blended family the children and the parents often have competing interests in providing for children from the current marriage as opposed to children from previous marriages or relationships. The use of a trust is the most common method for balancing the competing interests in blended families. The best way to view the trust is as a bucket that holds your assets. The bucket has instructions,

called the trust document, which you create with the help of an attorney. The instructions specify who gets what and upon what conditions. The instructions may say that a beneficiary must use the money only for school or a home down payment. The instructions may say that a beneficiary must remain employed, or drug-free, or just about anything one could imagine. The bucket also has a person to carry it and carry out the instructions, called a trustee. The trustee can be a person or an institution such as a bank or trust company. Without a trust, the children of the second spouse to die will usually end up with the vast majority of the assets. However, when assets are placed in the trust “bucket” those instructions can be drafted to provide for the surviving spouse during his or her lifetime and later pass to the deceased spouse’s children. Most people understand the importance of an estate plan but put it off because they are concerned about the time commitment and cost. For those who have decided to address their estate plan, Cooke Demers addresses both time and cost concerns with flat fee pricing and a system to complete the estate plan with minimal interruption to your work schedule.

Chi Thai Restaurant practices corporate responsibility When restaurant owner, Steven Yee, moved to New Albany with his family, he had a vision of opening a restaurant that would be a part of a community and not “just another place to eat .” Eleven years later, Chi Thai has been in business for nine years and continues to grow each year as an Asiantaste favorite for New Albany. “I think a large part to Chi Thai’s success is the fact that we have always supported the local schools and all of the sports teams in the community. Parents like to give back to the local businesses that support their children and youth” said owner, Steven Yee. Chi Thai is a Top 10 Best Restaurant Winner in Columbus Monthly magazine. Its dine-in location is on 5577 N. Hamilton Road in New Albany. Chi Thai is known for its exceptional quality of authentic Chinese and Thai food, as well as the value and culture that’s put in to the entire Chi Thai experience. With all of these ingredients, plus catering, banquets, full bar and carry out, what’s not to like? Chi Thai’s recipe for success is a combination of service, quality and business responsibility or sometimes referred to as corporate responsibility. That means

supporting local area by buying local, donating and giving back to local charities and helping those in the community. Yee believes it’s important for business owners to be philanthropic and to make a meaningful impact to the local community. Chi Thai donated meals to 18 human trafficking victims for over 3 months because the victims, from China, were unable to adjust to American food. They also provided gift cards to Target for clothes, assisted with rent and even help some of them find jobs in the communities, something the Central Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force or Salvation Army never asked for. Chi Thai refused compensation for their generosity. “I just hope we were able to make a difference and help get those girls a fresh start” Yee said. Chi Thai continues to improve upon their alreadydelicious menu and has some of the finest selections of Szechuan, Hunan, Mandarin and Thai cuisines for lunch, dinner, banquets or outside catering. However, the building’s true claim to fame is the 40 year history as a retail flower shop which has served all of central Ohio. For a time, their daughter, Edith Steffan took care of the shop until she passed it over to Tina and Dennis Willard whom have

New Albany Ballet Company offers training to students of all levels As young children enter New Albany Ballet Company (NABC), they are invited to explore the experience of what it means to be a ballerina. From the time NABC was founded in 1999, its mission has been to develop a children’s program that is enjoyable and expressive while maintaining strict discipline and structure. Today, under the direction of Tara Miller, Artistic Director and Owner, NABC has become one of the premier training ballet academies in the state and one of the most respected dance programs in the Midwest. NABC offers training in ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to students of all levels. Over the past sixteen years, NABC has grown to include over 600 students, and a strong, extensively trained faculty who works very closely with students to instill the correct training of ballet and a passion for dance that will continue to grow with their dedication. A unique approach to training each dancer, combined with immense attention to detail and highly skilled faculty, truly sets the institution apart from others in the area. NABC has developed a

children’s program that is fun and expressive, as well as disciplined and structured. Furthermore, NABC faculty work very closely with each student to not only push them to the next level, but to instill passion for ballet even at a young age. As students reach their teenage years, many make the decision to further their training in dance, and NABC has developed two programs for these dancers. One is the pre-professional level though which individuals take several ballet classes a week as well as explore both modern dance and jazz classes that are structured to support the ballet dancer. An alternative path advanced dancers take is one that will allow them to achieve successful auditions into college dance departments. These dancers are placed into a program at NABC consisting of ballet classes taught especially to the college requirements and advanced level, as well as the modern and jazz techniques universities require for acceptance. On both advanced levels, NABC guides students to seek out auditions, summer programs to enhance their training, as well as

Drift into a world of parties and dreams with the New Albany Children’s Ballet Theatre production of

opportunities to learn repertoire and perform on the pre-professional level. Pre-professional dancers from New Albany Ballet Company have had the opportunity to study with the American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Chautauqua, Orlando Ballet, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and the North Carolina School of the Arts. In addition, several NABC graduates have been accepted into dance programs at The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati, and Indiana University. That being said, NABC understands not all students

are seeking such high levels of commitment, and is aware that a majority of students take a ballet, tap, jazz, or modern class for fun! NABC supports this, and encourages all children, teenagers, and adults to do so. The nonprofit arm of the prestigious NABC, the New Albany Children’s Ballet Theatre (NACBT) is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to create a positive environment where children can learn the value of artistic expression. Additionally, NACBT realizes the commitment and dedication it takes to successfully produce local youth dance productions and has a vision to lay a foundation for annual performances in the community during the holiday season, and recently has expanded its season to include a spring production as well. This holiday season, the New Albany Children’s Ballet Theatre will once again performing the Nutcracker for three days in December (December 11-13) at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Furthermore, the pre-professional students will also perform a Spring

Repertoire Concert on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the McCoy Center. The Repertoire Concert showcases a unique combination of classic ballet and original works by local and renowned choreographers. Tickets for the performance will be available through Ticketmaster after the beginning of the year. Finally, NABC is extremely excited about the brand new, state of the art 20,000 square foot performing arts building slated to open Summer 2016. This new facility will house NABC, NACBT and an upcoming professional ballet company. In addition, this new building will allow NACBT to expand its season, and also provide meeting and event space to community organizations. Although the NABC will still hold classes for the entire 2015-2016 Season in their current building, they welcome guests to stop by the lobby and check out the rendering of their new home, located just across the street from their current space! New Albany Arts Council brings art to life in community Back in 1993, we were just a gleam in the eye of local resident and artist, Harold Cooper, when he gathered together a handful of art enthusiasts and formed the New Albany Arts Council with the mission of promoting an appreciation for, and, more importantly, providing actual opportunities for our residents to participate in the arts. Two of our programs for children, the Junior Musical and Center Stage Singers, found great success in 2015. In January, the cast of My Son Pinocchio, Jr. travelled to Atlanta for the 10th annual Junior Theater Festival for the first time. While they were there they met Broadway stars, participated in workshops, and performed for theater professionals in a condensed version of our show. Out of 101 groups from all over the world, our kids were named one of eight Outstanding Productions! This honor included an opportunity for the cast to perform in front of a group of almost 5,000 people! Due to the success of the program, we developed the Rose Run Players, which will encompass all of our theatrical programs as we begin to create even more opportunities for participation in the arts around New Albany. The Center Stage Singers, a choir made up of children 9 years and older, also had a remarkable year. In October, they participated in the “Remembering Marvin Hamlisch” concert with the NASO. The concert featured his greatest songs and people who worked with Mr. Hamlisch throughout his distinguished career. And one month later, they

were given the opportunity to perform alongside the multi-platinum selling group, The Tenors. Both concerts gave our singers once-in-a-lifetime experiences they will treasure for years to come. All of our programs are made possible through the dedicated work of volunteers, financial support of local business, grant opportunities from the New Albany Community Foundation and City of New Albany, and the continued support and participation of our membership. We are proud to be a major player in the New Albany community and can’t wait to see what artful “happenings” occur in our town’s future as we bring art to life!

Will you be a part of the arts in our community? Join the New Albany Arts Council today or find out more about our programs and events at www.newalbanyarts.org. You might just find one that’s a perfect fit for your artistic talent! New Albany Arts Council P. O. Box 151 39 E. Main Street New Albany, OH 43054 (614) 775-6222 www.newalbanyarts.org

AimHi boasts a modern, upscale business with professional staff As you first enter the doors of AimHi Family Firearms Center, you notice that this modern, upscale, indoor range and retail store looks nothing like what is portrayed in the movies. A family owned business in operation for over 18 years; AimHi’s staff understands our community’s need for access to a safe, comfortable, welcoming business to learn the basics of shooting and how to handle firearms safely. AimHi’s professional, experienced staff will immediately put you at ease and make your visit purely enjoyable. Their clientele includes people from all walks of life. Today we are bringing you an interview with the president of AimHi, Captain Claire Charles Marvin. Q. Why did you decide to build a Family Firearms Center in New Albany? A. That is an easy question to answer. After spending 20 years in the Marine Corps I understood the need for a community to have a place to learn to safely handle firearms. The Marines have a saying “Nobody likes to fight, but someone has to know how.” I have modified that a little into

the saying, “not everybody wants to have a firearm, but everyone should know how to correctly handle one, if for nothing else than to make them safe.” Q. What do you mean by that? A. Here is the scenario I use in our beginner classes: Imagine you are at a park, having a fun picnic just relaxing with your children, when up runs little Johnny waving around a loaded gun, yelling “Look what I found in the bushes.” What will you do? As an adult you can’t just run away. You have a responsibility to get that gun out of little Johnny’s hands, make sure it is unloaded and make it safe so no one gets injured. However, you can’t do that if you have never touched a firearm or know how they function. Q. That scenario sounds a little scary. Could that really happen? A. Certainly, it not only could happen but also does happen more frequently than people realize. We like to say “Firearm Safety Is No Accidents.” But it is hard to achieve that goal when there are adults who are to afraid or to busy to take the time to

learn how to handle a firearm safely or teach their children firearm safety. Q. So, what is AimHi’s approach to solving this problem? A. Well, it is all about education. We have developed classes for people of all skill levels, ages and backgrounds. For instance our Ladies First Shots class is a fun and slightly risqué class for women only where they learn about firearms in a laid back, friendly, fun atmosphere. We also have a First Shots Class that is coed for couples wishing to learn about firearms. We also have a class called Teens on Target where teens get the chance to learn firearm safety and a chance to shoot a handgun. These are

our most popular classes along with our CCW Classes, which are known throughout Ohio as the best CCW class in the state. Q. It sounds like you really have something for everyone. Is there anything you would like to leave our readers with before we close out the interview? A. Yes, I would like everyone to know that firearms are tools or instruments, or whatever you wish to call them, and they are everywhere. If you have not learned firearm safety, if your parents, spouse or children have not learned firearm safety, you should consider getting some training. Just to give you an idea of how our students feel about our training, here is a short testimonial: “Just wanted to

thank you again for teaching the women’s gun class last night. I had such a great time and feel so much more comfortable around guns. Being a single mom, I thought it was important to learn how to handle and use a gun in case I ever have to protect my son or myself! You made the class entertaining and enjoyable. When I heard the class was three hours I was honestly a little nervous. I even thought it might be a little boring! It definitely was not! You did a great job at interacting with the students, and allowing plenty of hands on time! I look forward to your second class, and once I complete that I hope to buy my first gun! As soon as my son is old enough, he’ll be in for the kids class! I was very impressed with your professionalism and the facility! What a great time! Thanks again! Q. Just a quick follow-up question Captain Marvin. How does one go about getting this training? A. Easy, just call AimHi at (614) 939-4867 and talk to any of the staff. Email us at sales@goaimhi.com or visit our website where all our classes are listed at www.goaimhi.com.

Recognizing signs that an older adult needs help at home Don’t wait for a crisis to determine if older adults in your life are safe, happy and healthy at home. Instead, watch for signs that could indicate your loved ones are not doing as well as they want you to believe. The questions below can help you to determine if your loved ones need help at home.

Does your loved one: 1. Walk unsteadily, have unexplained bruises, or is tentative in walking or standing? One-third of older adults fall each year, often starting a downward spiral of hospital stays. In addition, those who fear falling often restrict activities, making them even weaker and more insecure — and more likely to fall. 2. Look thinner than normal? Many older adults have poor nutrition because they don’t plan or fix meals — and because they may not have enough food in the house. 3. Seem quiet or depressed? Feeling sad, regretful or fearful is not normal, even for older adults. Isolation and changes in health can lead to depression, a problem for 25% of older adults. 4. Have difficulty remembering major events? Memory problems can affect every area of an older adult’s life, from medication mistakes to unsafe driving, poor bedtime habits, and lack of personal care.

5. Have a large quantity of medications? Older adults face serious health risks if they don’t take their medication properly. If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should begin planning for the future of your loved one by assessing medical conditions, level of income/assets, and preferences for long-term care. Also think about your own capability for caregiving. How much time, energy and money can you contribute to your loved one’s needs? Whether it is 3 hours a day or 24, employees of Home Care Assistance make a difference in people’s lives by providing the highest level of service and allowing older adults to live safely and happily at home — where 89% of older adults want to stay. Thank you, central Ohio, for making us the premier provider of home care for older adults. We are honored by the trust so many families place in us!

New Albany Community Foundation’s Jefferson Series brings the world to New Albany Fueled by generous donors, The New Albany Community Foundation developed The Jefferson Series as one of its many initiatives promoting lifelong learning. Now in its third season, this well regarded series has presented notable leaders, authors and thinkers that have filled The McCoy with New Albany residents, students and guests from throughout the central Ohio region. T. Boone Pickens, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Fareed Zakaria, Michael Pollan, Charlie Rose and John Glenn have been a part of the series, which has regularly sold out each lecture. The 2015-16 Jefferson Series season recently debuted with a two-day visit by actress and mental health advocate Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway. In addition to her Jefferson Series presentation at The McCoy with WOSU Public Media’s Ann Fisher, Hemingway met with nearly 1,000 high school students from New Albany and nearby districts plus Columbus mental health professionals. Her call to action was very powerful and prompted the development of The Mariel Hemingway Project, a collaborative effort between Healthy New Albany, New

New Albany High School students Redd Ingram and Blake Canowitz with Mariel Hemingway Albany School District and the Foundation that will result in additional programming to support the mental health of adolescents in the New Albany area. In reflecting on New Albany’s willingness to encourage community-wide dialogue about substance abuse and mental health, Hemingway said, “I am honored to have been invited

to New Albany to talk about these issues. Having the courage to tell our own stories is an invitation for others to tell theirs and you might save a life. It is incredible that this community is really focused on that.” A limited number of tickets are currently available on Ticketmaster.com for the balance of The Jefferson Series season which includes Michael

Sandel on January 28. Sandel is one of Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers, a Harvard political philosopher and best-selling author of “Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do?” Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Jon Meacham will appear on May 11 and focus his remarks on lessons from the American Presidency, a topic Meacham is uniquely qualified to discuss

as the author of biographies on Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and George H.W. Bush. The season wraps up with an appearance by two time Pulitzer Prize-winner, National Book Award Winner and President Medal of Freedom recipient David McCullough. His June 8 lecture will mark his third visit to New Albany. His two previous visits were to support the Foundation’s efforts to raise funds for the book collection and then to dedicate the New Albany branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Jefferson Series tickets are $25 and $35 each with student and senior tickets available for $10 each. The Jefferson Series is a program of The New Albany Community Foundation made possible through the support of Speaker Sponsors including Nationwide, Ruscilli Construction Co., the Keith and Cindy Berend Family Fund and by Premier Sponsors Accel Inc., American Electric Power, Kaufman Development, Kendal at Granville, Lynne and Martyn Redgrave and the Christine and Jeffrey Rodek Fund. Holiday Spectacular goes to the movies! The New Albany Symphony Orchestra, now in its eighth season, proudly provides innovative outreach for the community and a unique yearly series of performances at the state-of-the-art McCoy Center for the Arts. Recent high profile events such as the sold-out season-opening “Remembering Marvin Hamlisch” weekend performances attracted audiences not only from Ohio, but from New York City, Pennsylvania and North Carolina! A consistent audience favorite since the very first season, Holiday Spectacular has proven a beloved New Albany family tradition. This year, Holiday Spectacular is going to the movies! “We are always thinking of ways to engage new audiences,” remarked Executive Director Heather Garner. “Holiday movie music is traditional and timeless, and a common thread to the American holiday experience. We thought that a concert of holiday movie music would be a terrific way to celebrate the season in a very familyoriented way.” There will be something for everyone at this performance, from the young to the young-at-heart. The elementary school set will easily recognize tunes from Polar Express, Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. Those audience members with a more mature pedigree will appreciate hits like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” first sung in 1944 by Judy Garland in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis and “Jingle Bells” from Miracle on 34th Street.

Quality Yard & Home Maintenance offers quality service at an affordable price My name is Jeremy Nestor. My wife and I have three daughters and live in Pataskala. We attend Eagle Rock church in Pickerington. My goal with this business is to “first Honor God with our business” and then run a successful all-around company to serve customers in a small service area including and surrounding our home town. I was born and raised in Pataskala and graduated from Watkins Memorial. I am very grateful for my family, business and what God has done in my life. Our vision: Be the best company for hire by performing quality service that customers deserve, which will lead to repeat business for both our landscape and handyman departments. We are a full service lawn, landscape and home maintenance company. We

are fully insured and licensed. We offer reliable, quality lawn, landscape and home maintenance at an affordable price. Our clients are typically homeowners and business owners who outsource all of their maintenance to our one-stop shop. Are you a homeowner or business owner who doesn’t have the time and/or knowledge to handle the maintenance of your home, yard or business? Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%.

Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard.” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for

our lawn. Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a Theater Room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

Organize your Thanksgiving holiday A large meal is customary come Thanksgiving. Planning an impressive Thanksgiving menu can be enjoyable for many people, while others get a little nervous when tasked with such an undertaking. But getting a head start and staying organized can make planning a Thanksgiving meal much easier than it looks. Begin by jotting down ideas of which dishes you want to make this year. Traditional foods like turkey and candied yams may be expected, but it’s perfectly acceptable to think outside the box as well. If you won’t be hosting a large crowd, you may want to serve more manageable Cornish hens in place of a larger turkey. Root vegetables and squash are seasonal foods that can add some autumn flavor to your Thanksgiving dinner table. Potatoes, corn, turnips and parsnips can be served baked or turned into soups

and casseroles. Thanksgiving is a great time to celebrate local foods as well. If certain items are native to your area, such as grains or game, incorporate these foods into the planning. Rather than spending all of your time cooking the night before the dinner, mashed potatoes and casseroles can be prepared and frozen, then reheated on Thanksgiving. Some foods actually taste better when flavors have had an opportunity to meld. Even some baked goods can be made in advance and refrigerated or frozen until use. Think about preparing batters for cookies or cakes and then storing them in the refrigerator before finishing them on Thanksgiving. Any work you can handle in advance will save you time in the kitchen come the big day. Timing can be challenging on Thanksgiving. Whenever possible, free up your oven

for side dishes and desserts so that you will have ample space inside. A turkey can take up valuable real estate in the oven, so you may want to consider investing in a rotisserie or a deep-fryer so the turkey can be cooked more efficiently elsewhere. Then you will have plenty of oven space for heating side dishes and desserts. Dense foods should be placed in the oven first to enable them to heat thoroughly. Finger foods and appetizers may only need brief heating. Do not underestimate the power of the outdoor barbecue for quickly heating up foods if you are short on space in the kitchen. Delegate some of the work to others on Thanksgiving so you and your family can better enjoy the holiday. Encourage guests to bring their favorite items to serve buffet- or potluck style for Thanksgiving. This not only cuts down on the

amount of work for the host and hostess, but gives guests an opportunity to showcase their culinary skills as well. Desserts are often laborintensive elements of entertaining. Precision in measuring and preparing helps guarantee success. If you do not have the time to bake this Thanksgiving, serve store-bought cakes and save yourself the hassle, or ask

guests to bring desserts so you can focus your attention on the main meal. While prepping for the Thanksgiving dinner, keep the dishwasher empty so you can easily load items as they are used and keep kitchen clutter to a minimum. Increasing the number of finger foods can help reduce the number of dishes used while cutting down on post-holiday cleanup. When preparing for the meal, keep storage containers at the ready. Have guests fill up take-away containers with leftovers before the table is cleared so that no food goes to waste. Promptly refrigerate all leftovers so that they are safe to enjoy later on. Thanksgiving is a time when big meals are customary and a good deal of work is required. Breaking down the work into manageable tasks helps the holiday go off without a hitch.

Real Deals offers treasures for your home Granville business owner Michele Koester wants everyone to be allured by their home, wherever they live. In January 2012, Koester opened Real Deals on Home DĂŠcor in Granville, at 75 Westgate Drive (near Route 16 and Cherry Valley Road). Customers travel many miles to this “shopping destinationâ€? to find treasures for their home, especially during the holidays. Real Deals is a furniture, gift, boutique and home dĂŠcor store that sells all new merchandise, though the goods here seem to have the patina of history and more interesting character than mass-produced products. It’s the way Real Deals sets itself apart. Coming into Real Deals and getting to see and touch our collection of products is like a little vacation for people

M

HELE’ S

who are looking for that special something for their home, says Koester. Items here are displayed in tableaus that allow shoppers to actually see how furniture, lamps, pillows and wall art complement one another. “We help pull the look together, whereas in a big box store you may see a row of the same picture frame or an aisle of candlesticks that are not with anything else. Koester’s location is brimming with the bold, bright and beautiful at every glance. “We do our best to keep prices as low as possible, so you don’t have to feel married to the things in your home and can keep current with trends without the burden of high cost to do so, said Koester. “That’s really important to us. Therefore, she noted, the shop is located off the beaten path to keep operating costs low and is only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays creating a shopping destination. The cost savings from those careful operating decisions are reflected back to customers in the reasonable prices of Real Deals’ goods. Sometimes customers come into the store with a definite style or motif in mind, while others are a blank slate and want suggestions all along the way. Koester’s crew is there to assist at every level. Some clients email photographs of an existing space, seeking ways to spruce up, modernize or decorate for the season. “We’ll pull things together and bring it all to them. Sometimes people get mental blocks in their own homes, but we can come in with a fresh eye, and that can really help when someone is struggling with their own space.

Tapping Real Deals product team, Koester stays up-to-date on trends through home decor vendors and their showrooms in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Dallas. Vendors certainly help to provide the leading trends but more often, she is inspired by customers’ ideas and requests. “You have to listen to what people are looking for, said Koester. “Some people who come in are very creative. It is fun to stage the store’s vignettes, she added, but mindful placement keeps displays interesting and inviting, yet simple for customers to picture in their own abodes. Most of what is sold can be given as tasteful gifts, and one section of

the store includes jewelry, scarves, and other bling for wearing instead of hanging on the walls. New merchandise comes in each week, so inventory changes frequently and stays on-trend. Weekly deals are offered on the shop’s Facebook site, at www.facebook.com/ GranvilleRealDeals. For those decorating a new home or a long-established one, those in need of fresh ideas to make old favorites feel modern again, or those just hoping for a colorful way usher in each new season, Real Deals is the place where one can dwell at length. “We are retail therapists, said Koester. “We just want people to enjoy where they live.
