7 ways to alleviate cabin fever Long winter days can quickly bring on feelings of cabin fever. Although cabin fever is not a recognized medical condition, it can compromise well-being. Cabin fever can strike even the most optimistic people.

Cabin fever normally affects people during the winter months, when shortened days, longer periods of darkness and cold temperatures often force people to remain inside. These factors can lead to depression, boredom, anxiety, and an inability to concentrate. Alleviating symptoms of cabin fever requires making a few changes, including getting outdoors whenever possible.

1. Head outside. It may be cold and dreary, but getting outside can be healthy. Take advantage of daylight hours whenever possible. Plan a walk around the neighborhood before you go to work.

Otherwise, spend your lunch hour outdoors soaking up the sun’s rays. The sun is an instant mood-booster.

2. Brighten up the indoors.

Choose energizing colors like yellow, orange and red to decorate the interior of your home. Invest in lights that offer a greater amount of wattage and brightness. Light-therapy lamps produce bright light that simulates the sun and provides broad-spectrum rays. Sitting in front of one of these lights can alleviate feelings of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. 3. Grow more indoor plants.

Plants can help filter out stale, stagnant air in the house and add moisture to the environ-

ment. Breathing fresh oxygen from these plants can provide you with energy and help you to feel revitalized.

4. Increase your exercise routine. Now could be the time to join the gym or become part of a walking group. According to The Mayo Clinic, exercise can boost mood, reducing immune system chemicals

that can worsen symptoms of depression. In addition, exercise increases body temperature, which may have calming effects, and releases feel-good brain chemicals that may ease depression.

5. Throw a party. The old saying is “misery loves company,” so why not invite friends over and banish cabin fever

together? Winter tends to be alienating, as people are more inclined to bundle up and stay indoors. Forcing socialization can brighten not only your own mood but that of others as well.

6. Get out of town. Cabin fever can be temporarily abated by a mini vacation. Head somewhere that is warm and

As much of the country turns its clocks back an hour, night descends that much earlier, prompting a greater reliance on artificial light and electricity. When the time comes to turn clocks back, eco-conscious men and women can employ various strategies to conserve energy.

• Change light bulbs. Traditional incandescent bulbs are not the most energy efficient option available. The United States Department of Energy says incandescent bulbs use a lot of energy to produce light, but a significant amount of energy to produce heat as well. Ninety percent of the energy used by incandescent bulbs is given off as heat, so it is more economical and efficient to use a bulb that cuts down on heat production. Compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs, qualified by ENERGY STAR use about one-fourth the energy and last ten times longer than a comparable incandescent bulb that puts out the same amount of light. Light-emitting diode,

or LED, bulbs are a much more energy-efficient option, and LEDs last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

• Turn lights off when rooms aren’t being used. It can be tempting to turn on all of the lights on in a home when darkness arrives. But this wastes both energy and money. Turn lights off when you exit rooms. Try to gather the family in a centralized location that is full of ambient and task lighting in an attempt to concentrate lighting usage rather than spreading it out all over the house.

• Rely on timers or automated systems. Standard timers or more complex appsynced house management systems enable homeowners to turn their lights or even appliances on and off at key times. Those with a smartphone or tablet can log in and manage their homes from a remote location, turning lights on or off or adjusting their thermostats at their convenience.

• Turn down the temperature. The California Energy Commission says for every

degree a person lowers the heat in the 60- to 70-degree range, he or she will save up to 5 percent on heating costs. Set the thermostat low at night when residents are under warm blankets and quilts, and lower the thermostat when the house is empty. Furthermore, homeowners can turn down the thermostat on hot water heaters and even dishwashers, which can help save as much as 11 percent on water heating costs.

• Look to alternative heat and lighting sources. A warm, inviting fire can light up a room and also provide supplementary heat. Pellet stoves, or those that burn a highly concentrated fuel source that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly, may prove a worthwhile investment. Many heating stoves continue to give off ambient heat long after their flames have been extinguished. And centrally located stoves can heat most of a home at a fraction of the cost of traditional forced-air systems.

• Put south- and westfacing windows to use. Place

solar-powered devices next to a window during daylight hours to charge when the sun is at its brightest. Use solar-powered lamps, radios and even phone charges once the sun sets. Windows that get a lot of warm sunlight can be draped in dull, black curtains to incubate rooms that need warming.

The black fabric will absorb the sun’s heat, naturally heating a room.

• Trim shrubs and trees.

Make the most of sunlight when it’s available by allowing the sun’s rays to reach the interior of the home. Prune dormant trees and shrubs so that the home will get plenty of sunlight.

• Spend time outdoors.

Make the most of daylight hours by spending as much time outdoors as possible.

Read books outside or do homework at the patio table, reducing reliance on indoor lighting. Sunlight can make ideal task lighting for arts and crafts projects as well.

There are many ways to conserve energy and become less reliant on artificial light as daylight hours gradually dwindle.

Historic Beecher House is new home for Thomas Team, New Albany Realty New Albany Realty’s Kate & Tony Thomas real estate team has a new home with historic ties to the community.

The team outgrew its previous space on Market Street, and opened the first branch office for New Albany Realty, located in New Albany’s historic Beecher House at 95 West Main Street.

Columbus-based restaurant chain capitalizes on food truck craze with New Albany location Savvy “foodies” in the New Albany area have tuned into the latest innovation on the food truck craze - a convenient, bricks-and-mortar interpretation of this edgy category of dining.

Steak Escape Sandwich Grill, located at the northwest corner of 161 and New Albany Road, opened to rave reviews in the fall of 2012 as a fresh take on a local cult favorite.

With it’s food-truck vibe, colorful and fresh food line and made-toorder menu, Steak Escape Sandwich Grill still delivers the same mouthwatering cheesesteak and fresh-cut fries made famous by the parent company. Franchisee Jeff Jeffers explains, “It has been terrific to be involved in the R&D of a fresh new approach to a product that has had a cult-like following over the years.

Our adaptation has been really well-received. By sticking to our roots, we’ve seen customers who are familiar with the traditional Steak Escapes

come in and ask for “Old School” menu items, like Cheesesteak Mignon.

The original concept of the chain was a grill-tohand kind of experience; and, by returning to that approach, we’ve had lots of new folks who are psyched about building a fresh, customized salad or a delicious sandwich with their favorite ingredients.”

New Albany Arts Council makes the arts accessible to everyone Thank you to everyone who helped make our 20th Anniversary a great success! Our Junior Musical, The Little Mermaid was a great success, with an average audience of 500, up 60 percent from last year, and we are now looking forward to our 15th annual production to take place in July of 2014, My Son Pinocchio, Jr. Our chorus and community band performed all over the area this past year, bringing the talents of our citizens all over the central Ohio area. As we wrap up a busy but wonderful year, we are looking ahead to some great new projects for 2014!

In keeping with our mission statement to make the arts accessible to everyone of all ages, we decided to focus on starting programs geared towards children and teens. Our first new project is the youth choir, The Center Stage Singers, who made their debut at the Oct. 27 Night Moves Concert at the Jeanne B. McCoy Center. In this group, we focus on building self-esteem, proper vocal techniques and

stage presence-all skills that lead to well-rounded individuals. This exciting new group is made of children ages 9-17 from all over the Central Ohio area and will operate each year in two sessions. The first session will take place from January-March in a winter session, and a fall session in September and October.

Coming up in 2014, we’ll be performing songs such as “Cups” featured in the movie Pitch Perfect, “For Good” from the musical hit Wicked, Bruno Mars’ hit song “Count on Me” and

many other favorites from the radio, movies and Broadway!

Each year, more and more young actors and actresses look forward to being old enough to participate in our annual Junior Musical. To help them out, we are starting workshops for children ages 6-8 in preparation for our large production. The Broadway Beginners will use MTI’s Broadway Kids series, which specializes in teaching children the basics of performing in a musical while keeping the length short enough to help keep them focused and energized. The production will have limited sets and costumes, instead focusing

on giving the children the foundations they need to become triple threats! This year we will be performing a 30 minute version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The workshops will begin Feb. 1 and take place each Saturday until Mar. 8, when the participating children will perform for their families and friends. As a non-profit organization, the NAAC relies on grants and donations to operate, and we are excited to share a new opportunity with you on how you can be a part of the arts in New Albany. On Oct. 17, Franklin County became the 20th community to launch the site power2give, a crowd funding platform that focuses on non-profits who promote arts and culture.

The site gives non-profits the tools to post projects and promote them, making it convenient for donors to give. The New Albany Arts Council has listed two projects on the site, and they are related to the two

projects listed above-The Center Stage Singers and The Broadway Beginners.

Each project listing gives a detailed budget, showing you exactly where your money is going and how it will be used to benefit the community. And when you donate through power2give, your money goes even further!

J D Equipment brings quality in sales and service to New Albany J D Equipment recently opened the doors of a brand new facility just off Route 161 and Route 62 on the northeast end of New Albany.

J D Equipment is a family-owned business, which was founded in Plain City, Ohio in 1982.

The company specializes in the sales and service of new and used agricultural, lawn and garden, and light construction equipment — offering over 100 brands of equipment and parts. Over the years, J D has grown to become Ohio’s largest John Deere dealer, with eight locations and more than 300 employees. They pride themselves on their excellent customer service, wide range of products and parts, and convenient availability of parts on-site.

Construction on the new 17,000 square foot facility began in January 2013 as a collaborative effort by J D Equipment, 4 Points Development, Gioffre Construction and CF Bank. The main construction phase of the

The intent of the new building was to move and improve upon the company’s former location on Westerville Road near the Easton area of Columbus.

It features a modern layout which sets it apart from the company’s seven other locations. The facility includes ameni-

ties uncommon to other equipment companies in the region, including a state-of-the-art retail area, spacious service shop, parts department and employee computertraining center. “The new facility allows for more space for our current customers and allows us to more effectively serve new customers. The location,

in combination with the lot size, was a key factor in the decision to move.

We will be able to improve customer service and increase our selection of inventory,� says J D Equipment CEO Jeff Mitchell.

J D Equipment celebrated the grand opening of the new facility on Friday, Oct. 4 with a twoday open house event.

The event was greeted with a warm reception from area patrons as the line of customers waiting to get in stretched a significant length of the front of the building — even on a Friday morning. It was followed by steady crowds during the remainder of the two days.

The new J D Equipment building offers sales, service and parts for John Deere equipment, along with many other product lines including Scag, Hustler Turf, Honda, Stihl, Gen-

erac and many others.

New Albany Ballet Comapany offers premier facility, faculty, children’s division and recitals The New Albany Ballet Company has become one of the State’s premier dance training schools. Our programing is nationally recognized and students from NABC have continued training with the American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pacific North West Ballet and various other companies across the nation. Our ballet students are provided with exceptional training, professional performing opportunities, and a caring and qualified faculty. Our programs begin for children as young as two and continue into adult programs.

Ballet students are carefully guided through our ballet syllabus and properly prepared for the ballet world.

Although 80% of our 675 students train in ballet, NABC also offers students the best tap, jazz, modern and hip hop classes.

Programs are run by qualified and experienced teachers. Tap, jazz, modern and hip hop classes are given the same attention, professional performing experience and caring environment. These classes are fun, energetic, and a great experience for not only the “non ballet”

student but for our ballet students wanting to broaden their dance training.

What allows NABC to be different from other local dance schools is our facility, faculty, our children’s division and our recitals.

Our faculty is more qualified than other teachers in the area and have either danced in professional companies, graduated from top ranked dance departments, and hold BFAS, Masters, and PHDs .Two of our ballet teachers have received full accreditation and certification from the American Ballet Theatre’s teacher certification program. Our teachers are dedicated to each student and provide the best experience possible. Whether your child seeks dance as a profession or just for fun our teachers value and care for each child accordingly.

Our children’s division teachers provide a great first experience to dance. They incorporate colorful tutus, themed props, theatrical dances, and child friendly experiences. Our children’s division has grown to include 300 young dancers ages 2-5, and gives parents the choice of several weekday morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday classes. We structure our classes so two year olds train only with two year olds; three year olds only with three year olds and on up. A two year old requires a different class then a three or four year old child. The classes are also limited

to 30-minute sessions for ages 2 years and 45-60 minute sessions for ages 3, 4 and 5 years. Expecting a 2-year-old to focus for more than 30 minutes on dance is not something NABC feels is best for the child. Our children’s division offers combination dance classes for the child 3-5 years in ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.

All students have the opportunity to perform in the May recitals. There are five ninety-minute recitals held at the Jeanne B McCoy Center for the Arts. Tickets for the recitals are sold at the ballet school.

Parents have the ability to purchase as many reserved tickets as they need. We do not charge a family recital fee. Our recitals are staged by a professional stage and lighting company and have a much more professional look and feel then the average dance school.

Music for everyone!

The New Albany Symphony Orchestra strives to be inclusive in our programming, and as we sat down to plan the schedule for our sixth concert season, it occurred to us that a segment of our population is underrepresented (or not represented at all) in our concert hall – those with hearing impairment. As we are always up for a challenge, we made it a mission to try to schedule a season where those with hearing impairments—approximately 12% of the U.S. population—would be able to find enjoyment in our performances.

Our 2013-2014 season opened on October 22 by featuring one of Classical Music’s greatest compositions, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, “Ode to Joy,” which was written at a time when the composer was completely deaf. Amazingly, although Beethoven wrote the music and conducted the premiere, he never heard a note of the music. Our nearly sold-out season opening performance would have made Beethoven proud, featuring Capital

University’s Chapel Choir and soloists Chelsea Hart, soprano; Carolyn Redman, alto; Samuel Hall, tenor; and Mark Baker, baritone. With nearly 150 musicians on stage, the concert was a joyous feast for the senses.

We invite you to enjoy the remainder of our season! On December 22, our popular Holiday Spectacular will feature local celebrities, our student concerto winner, and special guests, in a musical celebration of everything that makes the holidays the Most Wonderful Time of the

Year. The orchestra will once again feature our Holiday Gift Basket Fundraiser prior to the performance, where elaborate gift baskets filled to the brim with last-minute gifts are raffled off as a fundraiser for the orchestra.

On February 9, we celebrate the Silver Screen with “Let’s Go to the Movies!,” featuring your musical favorites from Harry Potter to Superman on this Oscar-winning afternoon. Outreach surrounding this concert includes our very first student voice competition with the

winner performing on the concert!

On April 6, worldclass pianist Jon “Jackie” Kimura Parker will perform Beethoven’s beautiful Second Piano Concerto! This performance has been tailored to the needs of our deaf and hearing impaired community. Balloons will be handed out to audience members, allowing them to feel the vibrations from the orchestra, and John Adams’ Short Ride on a Fast Machine will include a laser light show timed to the pulsating rhythms on stage. Dramatic sign language interpreters will guide us through the emotions of Holst’s The Planets, and large on-stage screens will enhance the performance.

by Mr. Parker will take place for over 700 students at the McCoy Center on April 4 and a black tie meet-and-greet event featuring Mr. Parker will be held Sat. April 5 at the home of Larry and Cindy Hilsheimer. A limited number of tickets are available.

Smiles are contagious at Ready Set Grow The educational campus of Ready Set Grow has been proudly serving children of New Albany and the surrounding communities since 2000. Located directly next to the New Albany K-1 building, Ready Set Grow is a privately owned, highly secured, three-building school that exceeds state standards in all programs.

According to the American Automobile Association 2012/13 Year-End Holidays Travel Forecast, holiday travel has experienced a steady increase in volume over the last half-decade. Despite the sluggish economy, travel during the 2012/2013 end-of-year holiday season, defined as the period from Saturday, December 22, 2012 to Tuesday, January 1, 2013, was expected to be its highest since the 2006/2007 end-of-year holiday season, when 93.7 million travelers ventured at least 50 miles from home. Despite the cost of travel, travel volumes have traditionally remained very stable, with only one yearly volume change of 5 percent or greater, which was a 5 percent decline in the 2007/2008 season from a year earlier. One possible reason behind the steady nature of the end-of-year holiday travel season is the season’s length. It remains the longest holiday season of the year, affording travelers more chances to visit friends and family members and/or go on vacations. (MNS)

Foods that help fight fatigue Winter weather produces more than just colder temperatures and snow-covered landscapes. The longer hours of darkness synonymous with winter can promote feelings of lethargy and fatigue.

People who leave the house in the early morning darkness, only to return home when the sun has set, often find themselves feeling tired.

But changing your diet to include foods that provide energy may be just what you need to counter such fatigue.

Energy levels are often affected by what we eat. If you choose foods that result in a mid-afternoon slump, it could be time to make some changes. They key is to select menu items that will provide a gradual stream of energy through the day, eliminating those highs and lows that can lead to dips in energy. Here are some smart food choices to fight fatigue.

• Oatmeal: This fiber-rich food provides a quick boost of energy from carbohydrates, but will not result in a sugar crash that is common with many breakfast cereals.

The fiber in oatmeal will feed the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract, helping to keep the digestion system healthy. This means you can easily absorb the nutrients in oatmeal and avoid constipation.

• Pumpkin seeds: Researchers at the United States Agricultural Research Service found that people with magnesium deficiencies required more oxygen uptake during physical activity, which then brought on fatigue. Snacking on magnesium-rich foods, such as pumpkin seeds, will provide the body with the recommended daily allowance of magnesium. Aim for 310 mg of magnesium for women and 400 mg for men.

• Lean proteins: When enjoying proteins, opt for leaner meats and seafood that can be quickly digested by the body. Red meats marbled in fat require more energy

• Whole grains: When choosing carbohydrates, opt for complex carbohydrates, which can be found in whole grains, instead of refined carbs. The body digests and releases complex carbohydrates slowly, moderating blood sugar levels and keeping your mood stable. This helps the body maintain adequate energy levels.

• Spinach: Fatigue may be a byproduct of an iron deficiency, which is a common cause of

anemia. Red blood cells use iron to carry oxygen to cells. Without adequate iron, the red blood cells cannot do their job well and mental and physical fatigue may ensue.

Spinach is an excellent source of iron, magnesium and vitamin C. • Walnuts: Walnuts and other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can alleviate symptoms of fatigue.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that alphalinolenic acid found in walnuts can boost energy and relive depression symptoms.

• Dark chocolate: Every once in a while you may crave something a little sweet for a pick-me-up.

But rather than selecting just any candy bar or snack, opt for something smart. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols.

The chocolate helps boost the brain chemical serotonin, which can alleviate feelings of fatigue.

Winter doldrums do not have to get you down. Selecting an array of healthy foods that provide maximum energy and mood-boosting properties can help to banish fatigue.
