As athletes strive to achieve potential, they need to properly fuel competition and lifestyle, no matter their age or fitness level.
Proper nutrition Wearing the right gear and practicing hard help athletes develop skill, but it is also important to follow a specialized nutrition plan that meets the needs of the individual and the needs related to their specific sport. Proper athletic nutrition can enhance muscle recovery, add lean muscle mass, optimize carbohydrate and protein for the athlete’s body type and sport, and strategize for endurance fueling and hydration. By following a healthy athletic nutrition diet and schedule, athletes will be rewarded with increased energy and reduced risk of infection, illness and injury. What do athletes typically learn from a nutritionist? A nutritionist will provide guidance about what to eat and drink, and a recommended schedule for before, during and after a workout or competition. Guidance is provided about the timing of meals and a diet that includes a variety of food types. The use of supplements is discouraged. Whole foods in balanced meals provide health benefits that supplements cannot duplicate. Many athletes consume large quantities of protein. The overuse of protein supplements can lead to kidney problems or failure later in life. A nutritionist will also

explain why consuming more protein does not lead to gaining more muscle mass. Athletes should eat a nourishing, balanced breakfast within one hour of waking, and include healthy proteins to avoid hunger pains and improve brain power. Rec-
ommended protein sources include: peanut butter, eggs, yogurt, milk and lean breakfast meats like ham or Canadian bacon. It is important to drink the right amount of water or sports drink before, during and after activity for muscle recovery, to
avoid cramps and spasms. Parents of young athletes should provide healthy snacks and drinks at home and at team events: • Peanut butter, with crackers or apple or banana • Cheese, with crackers, grapes or other fresh fruit • Yogurt, with fresh fruit and a healthy cereal or granola • Water, before, during and after workouts or games • Sports drinks like Powerade or Gatorade, during high-intensity workouts Other important nutrition tips for athletes: • To maximize recovery after exercise and promote bone health, consume calcium-rich milk, yogurt and cheese. • To promote healing, consume the recommended amount of whole foods with concentrated nutrients, like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy. • If exercising more than one hour, consume 30 – 60 grams of healthy carbohydrates during the activity. These include peanut butter sandwiches, pretzels, string cheese, trail mix, dried fruit, orange slices, Powerade or Gatorade. • The night before, and 2 – 3 hours before competition, consume nutrient-rich power foods like wholesome carbohydrates, low-fat foods and lean protein.
Protection from injury Protecting your body from athletic injury is just as important as fueling it for competi-
tion. Below are training tips to help avoid injury and keep you in the game. • Before the practice season or workouts start, have a physical examination to screen for undiagnosed health issues, or conditions which could occur during practice or competition. • Incorporate warm-up exercises and stretching for 10 – 15 minutes before an activity, and cool-down exercises and stretching for 10 – 15 minutes after an activity. • Incorporate strength training for weak muscles. • Add exercise that differs from normal routines to improve strength, power and agility. Varied types of exercise can decrease repetitive stresses and overuse injuries. • Consider taking a break in the related workout, or participate in a different sport in the off-season—so that different muscle groups are exercised, to avoid overuse injuries. “My additional education as a certified personal trainer allows me to provide a combination of nutrition, training and parental support which can give athletes a competitive edge,” explains Sarah McClanahan, Registered Dietitian at Memorial Hospital. Today’s seniors are living longer, and many are remaining active into advanced ages. It may be more difficult for adult children to determine when loved ones may no longer be able to live on their own. Remember: needing a little assistance is not a sign of weakness, nor is making the decision to move to a senior living community to take advantage of the amenities and services. If you are concerned about a loved one living alone, or wondering when is the time to bring up the conversation of senior living arrangements, here are some signs to watch for. 1. Making repeated 911 calls 2. Losing weight without medical cause or showing signs of malnutrition or dehydration 3. Leaving stoves on and unattended, leaving bills unpaid or driving a car in disrepair 4. Lack of hygiene, staying in pajamas all day or refusing visits to conceal deterioration 5. Mixing up medications regularly, misplacing/losing items frequently or wandering aimlessly If you notice changes in your loved one’s lifestyle or appearance, it is time to take action. Likely, the aging senior has noticed something is wrong, but is afraid to seek help and lose his or her independence. If you would like to speak with a trained professional, a doctor is a great
place to start, but you can also speak to the experts at a Brookdale community by calling (937) 738-7342.

It’s one run and done:
For the season, for the check, for the win The 29th annual Enderle Pull-Off (www.AllStarPull.com) is the seasonending All-Star Game of the sport of high-performance tractor and truck pulling, in which altered vehicles vie to pull a metal sled the greatest distance along a straight, dirt track. The event is named for Kent Enderle, whose Enderle Fuel Injection of Simi Valley, California, a leading manufacturer of pulling and racing products, has been the title sponsor since the event’s inception in 1987. By the end of this year’s Pull-Off, Mr. Enderle will have awarded in excess of $1.5 million to over 550 distinct competitors in just shy of three decades. With $105,000 awarded this year alone, it is pulling’s most prestigious and lucrative singleday event. 2015 marks the 10th year in which the event has been held at the Champaign County Fairgrounds in Urbana, but it will be a season finale like never before. For the first time ever, the Enderle Pull-Off will be a daynight affair on Saturday, September 19, with both an afternoon session consisting of pullers who have earned

their places by competing within five regions around the country and an evening session featuring Grand National competitors who have placed in the top five in points acquired in contests held nationwide throughout the summer. Each session will consist of 12 divisions which vary from supercharged two-wheel-drive trucks to quad-turbocharged diesel tractors to five-engine dragster modifieds. “It’s a fast-paced event,” said Gregg Randall, NTPA Office General Manager. “The action on the two pulling tracks is nearly non-stop.” Between sessions, fans are invited to visit the drivers and see the vehicles up close in the open pit area. Food and merchandise vendors and a pulling-themed road show will also be on site to make the experience one fans can expect to enjoy and savor throughout that long off-season to come. The event is conducted under the rules of the National Tractor Pullers Association which has sanctioned over 75 events in 2015, each of which has had an impact on qualifying for the Enderle Pull-Off.

Farmhouse Ice Cream Parlor: Back in business and better than ever When Farmhouse Ice Cream Parlor in Uptown Marysville closed in December of 2014 there were some very disappointed people. Then a local couple, Kelli and Andy Willie, saw that the Farmhouse was for sale and a few months later the ice cream parlor was ready to re-open just in time for summer break. In order to open quickly they were only able to serve ice cream to start, but intended on adding a food menu in time for the fall/winter season. All of the quirky uniqueness of the original Farmhouse remains, like the train chugging around the parlor and the rooster crowing, and when you are done with your ice cream, you can go have your say on the huge chalk wall. And now, just out the back door is a small seating area when, on certain evenings, you can listen to live music coming from the nearby Partner’s Park. Or you can enjoy a cone out front at the bistro tables and watch what’s happening uptown. You can bring your furry friends by for a Pup Cup! (Pup has to sit outside.)
Just like the atmosphere at Farmhouse, the new food menu is fun. You can build a grilled cheese sandwich from a classic American grilled cheese to a gourmet French onion asiago shredded chicken grilled cheese to a chili dog grilled cheese that’s so sloppy you have to eat it with a spoon. You can even get a grilled mac and cheese stuffed with Kelli’s Famous Mac & Cheese. You can try the Holy Cow, which is a Roast Beef and Swiss Panini, or a “not your bowling alley Club Sandwich”. The menu should be out in September and you will find the menu on the Farmhouse Facebook page. You’ve just got to stop by this place to fully get it. The Hershey’s ice cream is absolutely the best of Marysville. They do shakes, floats, ice cream sodas, sundaes you’ve never seen before like their Hard Time sundae made for four people, or eat it by yourself and you might get on the Most Wanted Wall and go viral on their Facebook page. Farmhouse Ice Cream Parlor 123 E. Fifth St., Marysville (937) 738-7513

City of Marysville: Ranked third best place in Ohio to raise a family As the new school year begins, pedestrian activity will increase as students walk to and from school. The City of Marysville reminds residents of the importance of keeping sidewalks free of obstruction (including vehicles). Keeping sidewalks clear prevents pedestrians from having to walk near/onto the street or onto private property. Motorists are advised to practice the following: • Drive safely and be on the lookout for students as they travel to and from school. • Yield the right of way (of stop if necessary), to pedestrians crossing the roadway within marked
crosswalks. • Follow the reduced speed limits in school zones. • Stop for school buses when bus lights and stop signs are activated. City of Marysville 209 South Main St., Marysville (937) 645-7350 www.marysvilleohio.org

Amish Heritage Country Market: Unique health and wellness products Here at Amish Heritage Country Market, we strive to provide health and wellness specialty items for individuals with special dietary needs along with our line of ordinary products. From Olbas Herbal Remedies currently we have the highly sought after “All Natural Inhaler” and looking to expand into other products. We also have a nice line of reasonably priced essential oils. Yoder’s Good Health Recipe is a refreshing blend of apple cider vinegar and fruit juice with 14 herbs and spices. It contains no alcohol, no added sugars and is an excellent detoxifier. The use of herbal medicine is sometimes misunderstood and chosen to be ignored by the medical profession today. It is simply an old-fashioned all-natural supplement. A big hit has been our Stops Leg Cramps and Stops Acid Reflux products from Caleb Treeze which are a great
healthy substitute versus modern medicine. The Braggs Vinegar (with the Mother in it) is a healthy remedy to many aliments. The products from H&H Remedies are; Black Salve which is an excellent pulling salve for infections, splinters and soreness. White Liniment is another form of relief from muscle cramps, poison ivy, insect bites and skin rash, and the Vapor Ointment which can be used for minor colds, congestion and irritations. Some of our other health and wellness choices are Amish Origins Ointment for Deep Penetrating Pain Relief for Arthritis, Sore Muscles and Sprains. One Stop Bridal: Say yes to the dress Owner Carol Broyles’ passion in life is to help couples have that dream wedding without breaking the bank. Weddings are extremely expensive and they don’t have to be. Why spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a wedding gown that you will wear for a couple of hours and then hang in a closet collecting dust for years? Why not rent/buy that beautiful designer gown and save? Hundreds of new designer couture gowns in many sizes and colors are available at One Stop Bridal. Designers include: Maggie Sottero, Vera Wang, Casablanca, Anjolique, Jasmine, Provonius, Mori Lee, Demetrio’s Eve of Mlady, San Patrick Mary’s, Allure, La Sposa, Paloma Blanca, Impression, Justin Alexander, Galina, Forever Yours, Alfred Angelo, Mikaella, Eden,
Moonlight, Da Vinci, Private Label by G, Mon Cheri and more. In addition to the wedding gowns you can rent/buy mother of the bride/groom gowns; pageant gowns (all ages), designer prom dresses, homecoming dresses, cruise dresses, military ball gowns, debutante gowns, Quinceanera gowns and more!
