Nurturing a passion for lifelong learning Kendal at Granville, like most Kendal communities, can trace its origin to an initiative that involved a local institution of higher education.

Denison University, located 26 miles northeast of Columbus, played an integral role in the creation of Kendal at Granville, which opened in 2005. Two couples, both alumni of Denison University (and one with a relative at Kendal at Oberlin) made the initial introductions between Kendal and Denison.

The University not only contributed seed money for the community, it also provided the land through a long-term lease arrangement. Denison and Kendal at Granville continue to support each other, and each has reaped the benefits of a dynamic and synergistic relationship.

Collaboration

Kendal residents take advantage of the many cultural, intellectual and sporting events that Denison brings to the Granville community. Denison professors have lectured on a variety of topics at Kendal, and Kendal residents audit courses through Denison’s Community Scholar program.

This collaborative arrangement has led to a weeklong pottery class held twice annually at Denison’s Art Studio. The class is solely available to Kendal resi-

dents, and happens to be co-instructed by a Kendal resident who has been a longstanding Community Scholar.

Residents also regularly participate as subjects in research projects at both Denison University and Kenyon College. The Ohio State University-Newark and Central Ohio Technical College are affiliated with The Lifelong Learning Institute, which offers an expansive curriculum throughout the calendar year, some of which are held at Kendal at Granville. Curriculum offerings are available to county residents over the age of 60 for just $45 a year.

While Kendal residents and staff clearly benefit from their ties to educational institutions, students who take classes and/or live nearby also benefit. Kendal at Granville’s relationship with these college campuses allows the community to be a practicum site for students in health-related courses of study. These campuses also serve as an important staff recruitment resource for Kendal. Tuition reimbursement is currently available for Kendal employees.

Online opportunities

Kendal at Granville also has leveraged its broadband Internet connection to provide residents with access to more far-

flung educational opportunities.

Last summer, Kendal partnered with the Cleveland Museum of Art to offer six real-time interactive classes for 14 residents, 14 prospective residents and two staff members in its Amelia Gathering Room. Each of the six monthly sessions focused on a particular movement or style in world art history. There was no charge for participation.

These sessions provided an opportunity for residents, prospective residents and staff to come together to discuss a shared interest in art. Participants at the Kendal end were able to engage a curator or docent at the Cleveland Museum of Art with questions or comments as the classes proceeded.

Continuing learning

For more than 40 years, the Kendal System (www.kendal. org) has worked to transform our culture’s view of aging and of older persons, stressing the potential for fulfillment and continuing contribution during the later stages of life. One of the values that sustain those efforts is Kendal’s commitment “to promote an environment of continuing learning, encouraging lifelong growth for staff, community members, boards and volunteers.” Because of its passion for lifelong learning, Kendal became a pioneer in establishing college-retirement community relationships.

Vinegar can not only be delicious in salad dressing, but it also can make windows squeaky-clean.

The many uses for vinegar Check your kitchen pantry and you will probably find a bottle of vinegar. While this substance can add much-needed tang to favorite recipes and even improve the leavening function of some baking ingredients, its power extends far beyond the kitchen.

Many are surprised upon learning how much vinegar can do. A sour-tasting liquid that contains acetic acid, vinegar can be used as a cleaning product and an influential ingredient in many recipes. Vinegar also is relatively inexpensive, making it a cost-effective home staple.

If you are ready to get more from that versatile vinegar in your kitchen pantry, explore the following ways to put it to use.

Vinegar also can be used to deodorize garbage disposals, coffee makers and kitchen drains. It’s an effective means to removing pet odors from carpeting as well.

Around the bathroom, use vinegar to remove soap scum film from shower doors and tile surfaces. Remove stubborn toilet bowl stains as well. Corrosion and hard water can clog showerheads, and by soaking the shower nozzle in vinegar overnight, you can dislodge any material.

You can rely on vinegar when cleaning up around your home office as well. Vinegar can help clean sticky scissor blades or remove ballpointpen marks from surfaces. A vinegarand-water solution can be used to

How families can cut vacation costs Family vacations are the one time each year when all members of the family get to leave the daily grind behind to enjoy a little R&R together. Such excursions often strengthen family bonds and help to create lasting memories that parents and kids will cherish for years to come.

Families planning this summer’s annual getaway may already know that the cost of travel is on the rise. While there are always deals to be had, budget-conscious parents may still find themselves looking for ways to cut their travel costs so more of their money can be spent on having fun instead of financing trips.

The following are a handful of ways parents can trim their families’ travel costs without sacrificing the quality of their vacations.

• Stay closer to home.

It may sound simple, but vacationing closer to home is perhaps the best way for families to save a substantial amount of money on their vacations. Airline tickets can take up a sizable portion of a family vacation budget, and once the plane touches down families may need to add the additional expense of rental cars so they can get around their destination and

enjoy all its sights and sounds.

But families who choose to vacation closer to home can take their own vehicles, paying only for gas instead of airline tickets, car rentals (including rental insurance) and gas. Find a location close to home that still offers everyone an escape, but one that’s not far enough away that car travel will prove burdensome and exhausting.

• Plan to make some of your own meals. Dining out is another considerable expense for families on vacation.

Depending on the size of their families, parents may find that their dining budgets will approach or even exceed the cost of air travel by the end of a single week. But parents can drastically reduce those costs by planning to make some their own meals while away on vacation. Bring along a couple of cereal boxes so breakfast is simple and inexpensive, and try to book accommodations equipped with kitchens or outdoor areas where the family can fire up a grill a few times during the week to save on costly dinner tabs.

• Travel light. Families who must travel by air can trim some of the cost of flying by traveling light. Many airlines now charge fees for bags that exceed preestablished weight limits and may charge

for additional baggage as well. Leave hefty jackets and extra footwear behind when traveling during the warmer months, as everyone can likely get by with just some lighter summer attire and less formal footwear. If traveling to a ski resort in the winter, consider renting bulky skiing attire, including boots, so baggage limits are not exceeded.

• Work with a travel agency that specializes in your locale.

Many families may feel they can now plan their own vacations and save money, but planning through a travel agency may still be a family’s best bet. When booking trips via a travel agency, families can often negotiate with a representative, who can work to tailor a vacation that fits families’ budgets. Such negotiation is much more difficult when going it alone or working through a travel

website. In addition, many travel agencies include tours and other attractions in the price of their packages, and that can be a great way to earn discounts to local sights and activities.

Travel is expensive, especially for parents traveling with kids in tow. But costconscious moms and dads can still plan relaxing and enjoyable vacations without breaking the bank.

Find more time for your family Working parents tend to have hectic schedules, and those responsibilities often impede on the time moms and dads get to spend with their families. Many parents strive to make more time for their families, and doing so can prove a greater reward than any promotions or bonuses earned at the office.

For those parents whose efforts to achieve better work-life balances remain works in progress, the following are a few ways to free up more time for those people who matter the most to you.

• Stop working. Once you leave the office for the day, resist the temptation to pick up your smartphone and check your email or listen to your voicemail messages. Smartphones have made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office. But many working professionals feel this convenience has a significant downside, making them feel as if they are working round-the-clock, even during moments that were initially earmarked as family time. Working parents who want to make the most of the time they have with their children should ignore their smartphones during dinner or the time they spend hanging out with their kids or helping them do their homework. You can always sneak a peek at your emails when the kids go to bed.

• Shake things up. If your list of responsibilities is truly taking time away from your family, don’t be afraid to shake up your routine. For example, instead of cooking dinner alone, involve the kids so you can get some extra time in with them. If you like to go on a nightly jog around the neighborhood, let the kids accompany you on their bicycles so you can still get your exercise without having to sacrifice time spent with your children.

• Propose changes at work. Work is one of the biggest consumers of parents’ time. Parents who feel their work schedules are inefficient or in need of some change should try to think of ways to approach those inefficiencies so they aren’t having such adverse effects on family time. Business travel was once a reality of life for many working professionals, but nowadays technology, such as video conference calls, can let working moms and dads stay closer to home without sacrificing their productivity. Before bringing any issues to your boss, think of realistic ways to institute change so you and your coworkers can get more time with your families without falling short of company goals.

• Move closer to the office. Though this might be a drastic change, moving closer to the office might free up more time for parents to spend with their families than any other potential change they can make. According to data from the United States Census Bureau, more than 8 percent of workers have a commute to work of 60 minutes or more.

The Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey also found that nearly 24 percent of workers worked outside their county of residence, which no doubt contributed to the nearly 26-minute average commute time to work. Parents who feel their commutes are greatly diminishing the time they get to spend with their families may want to consider moving closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families.

Many parents are determined to spend more time with their families, and those willing to make a few adjustments can find that goal is not as difficult as it seems.

Parents can invite youngsters to join them as they prepare meals in an attempt to increase family time.

Your Board of DD The Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities is your local administrator of the county developmental disabilities system. The term Developmental Disabilities (DD) describes a variety of conditions that impact the way people learn and acquire new skills. These conditions are either present at birth or develop before a person is 22 years old. About one in six children in the United States have one or more developmental disabilities or other developmental delays. Common types of developmental disabilities include Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Intellectual disability (formerly known as mental retardation) and Spina bifida.

A developmental disability is life-long; there is no cure.

However, everyone with a developmental disability is affected differently. Some need little assistance to lead a very full life that includes living in their own home, a job/career, friends and family, hobbies and interests. Others need substantial amounts of support and care to get through their daily routines. We help people with developmental disabilities discover, pursue and achieve what is important to them and their families.

The Center for Disability Services, CSS James Street Day Habilitation Center, Friends of Jesus, Gathering Place, KICKS, LICCO Inc, Licking County Aging Program, Midwest Innovations, PALS, Respite Connections, SPARK, and

Services, Newark Resident Homes, and Person Centered Services are DoDD certified to provide residential services for Licking County residents with developmental disabilities.

These agencies are independently owned and operated. They receive a substantial amount of funding from the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Viaquest Inc. are certified by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DoDD) to provide services for adults with developmental disabilities. Alvis House, Community Living Experiences Inc., Consumer SupportServices (CSS),Custom Caregiving, Home Health Connections, Living in Family Environments, Midwest Health

In addition to working with certified providers, we have many community partners.

Our Board provides funding to Catholic Social Services, Licking County Coalition for Housing, Licking County Children and Families First Council, Licking County Special Olympics, Licking County Transit Board, Licking County Job and Family Services, Pathways of Central Ohio, West Licking County Special Olympics, and the Licking County Family YMCA – (All for One Summer Camp). This funding helps our partners serve Licking County residents with developmental disabilities.

Last year, your Board of DD provided services and supports to 1,500 children, youth, adults and senior citizens in our community— and we couldn’t do it without you! Without the support of our community this service delivery system would not exist.

The money we spend to pay our many providers and partners are contributed mostly by local taxpayers who support our periodic levies. Additionally, we leverage federal funds as a way to stretch our local levy dollars.

Local auto dealer finds sales success not seen since the ’80s In the eight years since Lash Chevrolet opened its doors in Johnstown, they’ve increased sales to levels not seen at this location since Reagan was in the White House. But how have they achieved this remarkable growth in such a competitive automotive environment?

I caught up with owner Eric Lash to get his take on things.

“From day one, my goal was to bring new Chevy sales back to levels from the ’70s and ’80s,” says Lash. “With a growing community around us, I knew that all we needed to do was focus on one brand, offer great prices, and really take care of our customers— a modern approach with an oldfashioned touch.”

With annual sales of over 500 new Chevrolets (almost 3 times greater than their first year in business), apparently his strategy has worked.

The first thing you’ll notice when you visit the lot (located on Route 62, eight miles from New Albany) is the sheer number of vehicles. From Impalas to Corvettes, Silverados to Suburbans— there is an abundance of selection.

Lash explains, “In our first year of business, we usually had about 100 new Chevys on the ground at any given time. Today, through a ‘turn and earn’ allocation system, we have grown to over 200. You can’t sell what you don’t have, and earning more inventory is a daily focus. We

In addition, Lash says that the dealership’s online strategy has also boosted sales: “We keep it simple.

The explosive growth of northeast

Columbus has also helped. “I grew up in Gahanna,” Lash says, “and it used to take 25 minutes to get to Johnstown.

Today, I can leave our showroom and be in Worthington within 20 minutes.

So that’s definitely helped us attract new customers. The idea is to get them to consider us. Because once they give us a try, they keep coming back.”

One reason for this may be the personal touch you receive from Lash Chevrolet. Despite the newly remodeled showroom, Lash makes sure that his store retains a small-town feel: “I’ve been working at this location for over 20 years, and some employees have been here even longer. This year, salesman Larry Lane celebrates his 50th year at our location! Call me oldfashioned, but I think that kind of stuff still matters.”

One step into the showroom and it was clear to me that he wasn’t exaggerating. No one ambushed me as I walked in, but a courteous salesman, named Brad, greeted me and answered all of my questions. He was low-key, yet professional. Turns out that he lives local and has worked at Lash for seven years. It was truly refreshing.
