Ketki Desai, DDS, has been practicing dentistry for over 25 years. She has completed over 1,500 hours of continuing education to keep up with the hightech, science-based transformation that has occurred in modern dentistry. She believes in building a foundation of trust through standards of excellence and a relaxing, positive experience for her patients. She strives to keep up with state-of-theart dental procedures. Dr. Desai is the founding member of the American Association of Dentists of Indian Origin, and she maintains membership in the Columbus Dental Society, American Dental Association, and Asian Indian Alliance. She is also an alternate delegate and trustee of the Ohio Dental Association, as well as a North East Regional Dental Board examiner. Governor Strickland appointed her to the Ohio State Dental Board from 2008 to 2012, and she served two years as the board’s vice secretary. She takes great pride in improving the quality of life and self-esteem of her patients and citizens of Ohio, and her commitment to lifelong education and quality dentistry ensures the highest level of care, both today and tomorrow. Dr. Desai and her husband have worked hard to raise funds for local charities such as Prevent Blindness OH,
the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, and the Columbus Chapter of the Association for India’s Development at OSU. They are proud of their two sons, Neil and Nathan, and Dr. Desai is excited to welcome Nathan to the practice this summer. Nathan Desai, DMD, is originally from the suburbs of Columbus and attended Columbus Academy in Gahanna, after which he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Miami University of Ohio. He has always wanted to pursue a career that allowed him to give back to his community. This desire and determination led him to pursue his doctor of dental medicine at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry in Philadelphia. There, he learned the art of dentistry and patient care from many of the best dentists in the country. Dr. Desai enjoyed his time in Philadelphia, but his heart has always belonged in Columbus. Throughout his life, he has been a Buckeye fan, and he’s excited to be back in the land of scarlet and gray. Summer fun to be had in Hilliard Don’t miss these great family fun events coming to Hilliard in June and July!
Dads and Ducks
The Hilliard Family Aquatic Center will host the eighth annual Duckie Derby, a fundraiser that benefits Patches of Light, a Hilliard-based charity that assists families of critically-ill children, Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m. Participants write their names and phone numbers on plastic ducks and then release them to float down the course. Prizes are awarded to the winners and include a variety of gift cards. “We look forward to Duckie Derby each year,” said City of Hilliard Recreation and Parks Director, Steve Mazer. “The event brings the community together for a fun family night out, while also supporting a life-changing local charity. We have raised money for Patches of Light since Duckie Derby’s inaugural year.” Ducks are available for purchase at the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, the Hilliard East Municipal Pool and the Community Center. The cost is $3 for one duck or $15 for a “quack pack” of seven. In addition to Duckie Derby at the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, the Annie Jam Band will perform an outdoor concert from 2 to 4 p.m. that afternoon, Father’s Day games and crafts are available from 4 to 6 p.m. and at 9:30 p.m. the movie “Daddy Daycare” will be shown.

Have you wondered about Glenmont?
We have been neighbors since 1987. Twenty-eight years; imagine! We thought it is high time to tell you our story. We are a 35 bed 501(c)(3) nonprofit, non-medical Christian Science Nursing Facility. We accommodate patients and residents from all around the country who come to us for care. We employ 55-60 full-time and 10 part-time staff. We have 24 plus regular volunteers, including several highschool students from the area.
Many of our employees come from all over the world to work here and go through our Christian Science Nursing Education School. We have very low turnover in staff with several members having worked here more than 20 years; some even more. We have all levels of care and are a Medicare/Medicaid provider. Learn more at our website, glenmontcsn. com or call our Administrator, Mark Schierloh at (614) 876-0084.
We originally occupied 16 acres of prime real-estate in Hilliard across from Hilliard Davidson High School. Having recently sold 10 acres of our land to Crawford-Hoying Developers, you will soon see the completion of one, two and three bedroom apartments next to us. We have a Portrait Profile with the Columbus Foundation and are eligible to receive donations through their website at columbusfoundation.org.
We think you might be interested to learn that in the 2014 Survey conducted by the Ohio Department of Aging, Glenmont was rated #1 out of 963 Nursing Facilities in Ohio. We are humbly grateful to have this award. We appreciate our hardworking staff and everyone whose participation made the achievement possible. Stop by and say hello!

Our Services
At Just Smiles, we pride ourselves in offering the highest quality of care possible. We are a full service mercury-free practice, which means we do not place any “silver” amalgam fillings but rather only place composite “white” fillings or porcelain crowns. In addition to traditional dentistry, we place and restore dental implants and implant supported dentures, place Lumineers, perform root canals, straighten teeth with Invisalign and more! Is the fear of dentistry keeping you away? We offer Consicious IV Sedation Dentistry where you can get all of your dental work done—or wisom teeth removed—while you are in a twilight sleep. You will love it! Don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions. Our treatment coordinators will be more than happy to answer all of your concerns or to help you make an appointment. This type of pay scale allows us to attract the top professionals in our industry, as well as protect the integrity of our shops. Due to this family oriented noncompetitive work environment, our shops develop a spirit of teamwork and recognize the excellence of the overall group. Some of our biggest success stories are the young people, trained in-house, who have developed into productive, professional technicians. We are also proud that assistant managers, promoted from our other locations, manage some of our new units. We try to keep our business plan at its simplest form; perform work you are proud of, and work for the customer not you. The newest attraction, Hilliard’s Station Park is located within two blocks of this parade-route residence and will include an amphitheater and splash park. Gretchen was elected to the Columbus Realtors Board of Directors in 2010, became a Columbus Tourism Ambassador in 2013 and will be the Women’s Council of Realtors President in 2016.

Go on the tour and see the method to how they design their high-quality bats. It’s a fun and educational tour that all are sure to enjoy. After you’ve finished your tour, drive down Industrial Parkway to Mitchell’s Berries, home to some of the best strawberries in Union County. With their u-pick option, you can pick as
many strawberries as you can fit in your car! Raspberries and other fruits are available seasonally. Mitchell’s Berries is just one example of the many agri-tourism opportunities in Union County. With Independence Day quickly approaching, many families are wondering just what they should do. Union County has several exciting events to choose from. From the Marysville 4th of July Parade to the Rock ‘n’ Ribs Fest and firework display, to the Plain City July 4th Celebration, families are sure to find something that everyone will enjoy.
Union County plays host to two family-friendly, kid-safe fairs: Union County Fair and the Richwood Independent Fair. The hot air balloon festival takes place at the Union County airport and is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary with 40 hot air balloons expected. Families can also take advantage of the many festivals and events we have in Union County year round. For old-fashioned goodness you’ll want to attend the 8th Annual Covered Bridge Bluegrass Festival in mid-September. Spanning three days, this festival takes place on the beautiful Pottersburg Bridge just a short scenic drive West of Marysville. Various bluegrass musicians perform throughout the festival. Festival goers also have the opportunity to purchase tickets to attend the Dinner on the Bridge, an event that many remember for a lifetime. Bring the whole family out to enjoy the pancake breakfast on the bridge or a community worship service. Guided covered bridges tours are offered during the festival, as well as horse and wagon rides. Home Savings adds the personal touch to mortgage lending By Deb Herman Advertising Director Shopping for a home mortgage can be confusing. Most banks have very similar rates and fees, so what should you look for when choosing a mortgage lender? “Look for a real person, someone you can connect with,” said Nick Linamen, Area Sales Manager for Home Savings & Loan. “A lot of banks today don’t even offer you a personal meeting, just a phone call or email contact. That’s what makes Home Savings so special,” he explained. Home Savings has been in this market for about 11 years with a mortgage office in Worthington. “We’re focusing more on reaching out to individuals who are looking for a mortgage that’s not only competitively priced, but also competently managed by an experienced loan officer with a personal touch,” said Linamen. The bank’s loan officers will meet with customers at their convenience … evenings, weekends, whenever and wherever is good for the customer. “Like most other banks, Home Savings offers the convenience of applying online, but if you want to meet with a loan officer that option is always open,” said Linamen.
Of course Home Savings offers loans for purchases and refinances, but the bank does offer a couple of programs that are unique. “We’re especially proud of our construction loan, which converts to a regular mortgage once the home is completed. Not many banks offer a construction loan anymore, so we’re filling a real need with this program, said Linamen. “And, qualified applicants can get a really low down payment, lower than most other mortgage loans.” Home Savings has a special FirstTime Buyers Program, too. The program offers low down payments (which can be gifted to the borrower), no mortgage insurance costs and no income restrictions. “This program makes it affordable for someone who’s still renting to become a homeowner,” said Linamen. As far as offering that personal touch … there are two experienced loan officers serving residents of this area. Linamen himself, along with Linda Tempesta, can be reached at Home Savings’ Worthington office via phone or email, or through the bank’s web site. Will my child be ready for elementary school? More and more parents are recognizing the importance of the early years to their children’s success in elementary school and beyond. The most active time of brain development occurs before age 5. Strong neural connections formed during this critical time are established by the experiences children have with their environment. The quality of those early interactions determines how children continue to learn and form relationships, strongly influencing their future success and happiness. Research confirms that nurturing guidance and attention to every aspect of development in the early years help children develop compassion, confidence and a love of learning, in addition to competence and academic skills. Primrose Schools has more than 270 accredited, private preschools nationwide, and provides a balanced approach to school readiness—a wellrounded preparation in basic concepts and acquisition of social skills—that gives children the foundation for a future filled with promise. At Primrose Schools, “readiness” means more than just learning how to add and spell. It means learning how to think critically, use mathematical concepts, share and show self-control— skills that support a positive transition to elementary school. The Primrose Schools Balanced Learning® system blends academics, play and character development to
build a strong foundation and nurture a lifelong love of learning. In addition to core academic subjects, the curriculum includes enrichment programs in music, physical activity, art, sign language, Spanish, technology and social skills. Parents choose Primrose Schools because of its proven value in preparing children for success in school and in life. Nationally recognized assessment tools and our own research with Primrose parents show that Primrose pre-K and kindergarten students are advanced in social skills and concept knowledge, and therefore more ready for elementary school than many of their peers. Maker space for kids: Tinker opens in Hilliard After three years of bringing high-quality tutoring to students in Hilliard and the surrounding communities, Tutoring Club owner Kyle Miller has expanded the offerings that his staff offers to kids of all ages. Within the past year, Miller has opened a new business, called Tinker, next door to Tutoring Club. Tinker is a maker space that offers camps, workshops, birthday parties and other science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) events to participants from Pre-K and up. “Tutoring Club has been developing kids’ reading, writing and math skills for a few years,” said Miller. “Offering our community enrichment opportunities for young inventors, builders, designers and tinkerers just seemed like a nice complement to the work we were already doing.” That is when Tinker was born. Their mission is to “nurture kids to become makers of things that can change the world,” and they offer programming five days a week at their workshop located at 3933 Trueman Blvd. in Hilliard. This summer, Tinker plays host to more than 200 participants in their Summer MAKEation Camps. Kids, age 6 and up, will be spending weeklong sessions in camps with titles such as “Toymaker’s Workshop”, “Beginning Computer Coding”, “Film-Making and Special Effects”, and “Cardboard Contraptions”. Tinker is holding 28 different camp sessions throughout the summer. Space is still available in some camp sessions, and more information can be found on their website at www.tinkercolumbus.com. Jared Maccombs, who has taken over the day-to-day operations at Tutoring Club while Miller develops the Tinker programs, sees a close fit between the next-door neighbor businesses. “We have students who work hard every evening at Tutoring Club as they improve their reading, writing and math skills. Then they get this awesome opportunity to walk over to Tinker and use their skills in innovative, new ways. The projects that the kids come up with at Tinker are just incredible.” Maccombs says that Tutoring Club has taught more than 250 students in the past three years, and that there is a growing number of those kids who work in Tinker’s workshop as well. Along with their daily tutoring sessions and workshop, Tutoring Club and Tinker make a habit of giving back to their community. Through their “ACT Education Day” fundraisers, where students take the practice ACT and

then receive complimentary counseling and college planning advice, they have raised more than $6,000 for the OWjL Program and SON Ministries. In addition, tutoring vouchers, valued at more than $5000, have been donated to local schools and charities as fundraisers. As a sponsor of the district and regional Invention Convention in Columbus, Tinker has sponsored a dozen scholarships for kids to come to summer camp. Both businesses have also sponsored school activities like walk-a-thons, school festivals, and athletic teams at several Hilliard schools. Miller says, “Our community is good to us, and we are committed to being good to our community.” Services offered at Tutoring Club and Tinker are very diverse. “All of our tutoring is individualized to fit the needs of each child.” Miller says. He adds that about half of their Tutoring Club students are in kindergarten through sixth
grade, and the other half are middle school and high school students. “There is a general false impression that tutoring is only for students who aren’t doing well in school. The college prep environment is very competitive, and many parents are catching on to that fact. We realize that the best scholarships and seats at the most prestigious colleges are given to the students who can show that they have the skills to succeed and represent their college well.” Tutoring Club can be instrumental in helping students make their high school portfolios more competitive when applying for college admission and scholarships. At Tinker, the staff—which they call “Maker Hosts”— nurtures a love of making in ten different maker spaces within their workshop. They have areas called Grow Space, Hack Space, Textile Space, Design Space, Build Space, Circuit Space, Digital Space,
Fab(rication) Space, Mixing Space, and Coding Space. “Between all of those different spaces, we have the equipment and supplies to meet the inventing needs of just about every kid we encounter. From art to computer programming to sewing to construction, we want to encourage kids to be inventive and creative by having a lot of choice available,” says Miller. “It’s not uncommon for a child to sew and wire electrical circuits all in one night.” In Tinker’s “Sew and Glow” workshop, for example, students designed clothing articles and then wired them with LEDs by sewing circuits with conductive thread. Anne McKinley, one of the “Maker Hosts” said, “It’s always an exciting challenge for kids to mix materials that are generally not put together into one project.”
Since every child learns differently and has different needs, Tutoring Club and Tinker offer a variety of options for their students. At Tutoring Club, they have a beginning reading program that is perfect for students from age four to six. The program is rich in phonics and comprehension. “Our beginning readers are excited to answer challenging questions that require them to make inferences and draw conclusions,” said Maccombs. Miller says of Tinker’s programs, “We offer Tinker Tots for the same age group. While building a love of reading next door, they can build their love of science, math and engineering with my staff.” Tutoring Club also tutors elementary and middle school students in reading and math. Tutors start with a student’s current skill level, and move forward as the student shows mastery. “Students get immediate feedback on their work and can quickly grow their skills with their tutor’s guidance.” At Tinker, students get to put those skills to use in the real world. Miller remembers a student’s project that was full of math skills he had learned: “This kid used skills in geometry, measurement, division and fractions to 3D print pieces for a product he was inventing at Tinker. Now, that’s real-life.” High school students are the fastest growing demographic at Tutoring Club. “We had a lot of younger students during the first year we were open, but because our high school students started showing great results in English, algebra, geometry and pre-calculus, the word spread quickly about their great experiences with us,” Maccombs said. These high schoolers include students who were later ranked at the top of their classes, took college-level courses, made honor roll for the first time, and received full scholarships to college. Miller recognizes the dedicated parents of Hilliard children as he talks about his businesses. “Parents are noticing their children’s skill gaps and their gifts and getting them the help and enrichment they need. They are really setting their children up for success.” For any questions, or to discuss enrolling a student, Maccombs can be reached at Tutoring Club at (614) 664-9474 and Miller can be reached at Tinker at (614) 9878188. Evening and weekend appointments are available for meeting in person. “We care about our community’s children and their future, and we are glad to be a part of their education,” Miller says.

Businesses use Hilliard Chamber membership for education and growth As we continue to emerge from a difficult recession that was especially hard on small businesses, we see signs of progress with new organizations opening their doors and existing companies adding services and personnel. However, the recession reminded all of us how important it is to keep costs under control and look for creative ways to reduce expenses and grow revenue. For years, the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce has been committed to providing area businesses of all sizes with the tools and resources to “make (business) life easier” for people who have put everything they have into running their own business. With more than 420 members, the Hilliard Chamber is the voice of business in the Hilliard area and is dedicated to helping business owners “build their business.” Whether it’s networking, education, cost savings or business advocacy, HACC members benefit from a multitude of resources designed to help take some of the stress out of the daily challenges of owning and operating a business.

“I established a dental practice in Hilliard over six years ago, and one of the first things I did was become a Chamber member. It didn’t take long for new business colleagues to become friends and for me to feel very much a part of the community. Luncheon meetings are informative and networking opportunities numerous. The value of being a Hilliard Chamber member is exceptional.” — Carole Kelley, DDS Hilliard Dental Associates Left: Connection and community events give members opportunities to become involved and grow their business. “The Hilliard Chamber of Commerce has been a great resource to both my business and social life since moving to this area 4 years ago. Through the Chamber, I was able to get connected and meet other business owners like myself and become an active member of the community. I attribute much of my success to getting involved in many beneficial committees/events in the Chamber, as well as many volunteer opportunities. I realized that my membership was an investment, and not just an expense to my business. Thanks to everyone in the chamber for making me feel welcome.” – Timothy J. Payne, Financial Advisor Edward Jones “Being part of the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce has been great for my new business. I have gotten many referrals and requests for my work, repeat business and plenty of phone calls. The Chamber keeps me in the loop and abreast of what is happening in our business community. It’s a great organization and it gets better the more you get involved.” — Katie St. John, Owner An Occasional Florist
