Help fund Creative Clinic Center’s Art Education Center in Grove City!

My name is Gina Perry and I am the owner of Creative Clinic Center, based out of Grove City, Ohio.

As a life-long artist and graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design in 1994, I have gained experience in many avenues of the art world including fine arts, illustration, printing, graphic design, web design, creative services manager, freelance graphic designer, adjunct design teacher at Columbus College of Art and Design and business owner.

After more than 17 years of being a graphic designer I felt a strong calling to go back to my fine arts roots. This required me to step away from the computer and my full time freelance graphic design business. I also realized after a couple years of teaching at CCAD, I really enjoyed the experience of passing on my artistic knowledge to others and watching them thrive! In the process of this realization I decided to offer social painting classes, Paint Mixers. At first it was just for fun, but without even trying, the events were selling out and guests were signing up on a regular basis.

No experience is necessary and the events were held at local venues/bars so guests can

enjoy their favorite beverages too, it helps the creative juices flow! Guests found themselves laughing and enjoying themselves as well as escaping from their day-to-day stresses.

It’s been over a year and a half and my dad (my righthand man and affectionately known as “DAD” by our guests) and I have been humbled by how well we have been received by the community.

We have met so many wonderful people in the process!

Our aim is to always be upbeat, friendly and full of humor. We never expect perfection from our budding artists and encourage them to just enjoy the process and have a blast!

Our number of regulars is overwhelming as well as our requests for more art classes for all ages and different types of classes. We get so excited thinking about the possibilities.

Our current goal is to bring an art education center to Grove City, Ohio by means of crowd funding so everyone can enjoy the benefits and fun of being creative! We will still do events at other locations, but would need our own space for expanding our business and creating a variety of classes for all ages.

The community has expressed to me their desire for us to offer other classes such as: • Youth and adult art classes • Art camps • Foundation classes in drawing, figure drawing, still life, oil painting and more!

• Gallery shows • Creative fundraiser events (way too much fun!)

• We can even see performing arts, photography and digital arts a possibility!

Having our own dedicated art center would allow us the freedom to expand in so many ways and benefit the community.

Here’s what an art center can do for everyone: • Provide a space to conduct public and private creative events • Fundraisers • It would bring an added attraction and fun/unique activities to the area and neighboring towns • A gathering place to put those super cool Pinterest ideas to work!

• Create more jobs and revenue (we’ve already hired a new art instructor) • Serve as a “supplement” to those who want to expand

beyond their current art level, or wonderful for those who have had art dropped from the schedule at school.

Art is very therapeutic! Today more than ever we need to find ways to unplug.

Here is just a short list of the benefits of creating art: • Inspires motivation and inventiveness • Increases cognitive development • Promotes relaxation • Develops confidence • Strengthens communication and problem solving skills • Stimulates imagination • Creates “Out-of-the-Box” thinking • Even helps with memory and reduces anxiety for those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, PTSD, depression, anxiety and lowers blood pressure.

Here is what your funds will go towards: • Rental or purchase of space for the center • Tables, chairs, easels • Art supplies • Lighting • Furniture • Remodeling • Signage • Marketing • Website improvements

Mount Carmel bringing people-focused full-service hospital to Grove City Mount Carmel always hoped its specialty healthcare campus in Grove City would be a destination for patients in southern central Ohio. It turns out it will have space for a lot more before too long.

Last month, Mount Carmel announced plans to expand its current Grove City campus, which features a 24-hour emergency department, imaging and lab services, women’s health center and medical office building, into a fullservice hospital. And not just any full-service hospital; one that will set new standards for safety, serenity and peoplecentered care.

The new hospital will feature 210 private rooms and seven floors of clinical service, including inpatient and outpatient surgery, intensive care, a mother-infant unit, oncology and palliative care. The expansion will also nearly double the size of the existing emergency department.

Connected to the hospital will be a new five-story medical office building with outpatient oncology, women’s health services, maternal fetal medicine and physician offices, expanding on the exceptional primary care, cardiac, rehabilitative and other specialty services offered in the current campus office building. The campus also will be the new headquarters for Mount Carmel’s Graduate Medical Education programs.

Designing the hospital from the ground up provided Mount Carmel the opportunity to create a facility that not only supports superior outcomes, safety and high-quality care, but also puts the focus on the patient experience. That’s why the new campus was designed with flexible clinical space that promotes care coordination and allows patients and families to be engaged in their care from the very beginning.

There will be very un-hospitallike features as well, including easy-to-navigate pathways throughout the facility and a bistro-style dining area with a variety of menu options. And the serene views, abundant natural light, peaceful respite areas, walking trails and roof gardens will create a welcoming experience that inspires comfort, confidence and compassionate care.

Perhaps most convenient of all, Mount Carmel’s Grove City campus will be able to maintain all of its existing emergency and outpatient services during construction.

The $355 million project, which began in March and will be finished in late 2018, will make it the first hospital in the market south of the Interstate 70 corridor and will greatly expand access to care for this rapidly growing part of central Ohio.

Grove City and the surrounding communities have long considered Mount Carmel their healthcare home. That may explain why Mount Carmel Grove City has been embraced by the communities’ residents to an even greater extent than expected. It’s Mount Carmel’s hope that this expansion will allow the system to continue to meet those loyal patients’ growing needs for generations to come.

The expansion at Mount Carmel’s Grove City campus is part of an even larger transformation plan at Mount Carmel that also will include a modernization of Mount Carmel East and revitalization of Mount Carmel West.

These projects are part of the system’s bold vision for transforming healthcare in central Ohio by focusing on prevention and wellness, improved care coordination, population health management, and integrated care capabilities targeted at keeping people healthier.

The $310 million Mount

Carmel East modernization will improve all aspects of the current facility, from infrastructure improvements and the complete renovation of the original patient tower to the construction of a new 5-story patient care tower with a new state-of-the-art surgical suite and 128 new all-private patient rooms.

Another important aspect of the project is the transformation taking place at Mount Carmel West. That $46 million project will go hand-in-hand with the Mount Carmel Grove City expansion since inpatient operations at West will transfer to Grove City when construction on the new hospital is completed there.

The existing Mount Carmel West campus will transition from an inpatient hospital to a vibrant outpatient and educational campus—the center-

piece of a revitalization effort that will result in a stronger, healthier and more sustainable near-west-side neighborhood.

The revitalized Mount Carmel West will focus on primary care, urgent and emergent care and will feature a sizable 24hour emergency department.

The project also will provide the Mount Carmel College of Nursing with room to grow and extend the efforts of the Mount Carmel Community Health Resource Center, which helps prevent and manage chronic medical conditions, encourage healthy lifestyle habits and promote holistic wellness.

“Mount Carmel West will do more than promote and foster healthy living and healthy lives. It will be designed to attract additional services and activities—commercial, residential and social—that together will inspire hope,

expand opportunity and create a diverse and central gathering place for the extended community,” said von Zychlin.

All in all, Mount Carmel is committed to spending more than $700 million on the three campus transformations, with the goal of leading the effort to deliver more personal, peoplecentered care across central Ohio.

While the project will clearly have an impact across the community, it should be felt significantly in Grove City and its neighboring communities, which will finally have a fullservice hospital to call their own. And it will be a hospital that’s not only reflective of the community’s growth, but of the progressive, pro-active, people-centered direction modern healthcare is headed.

As the population and structure of Grove City continues to evolve, the Parks and Recreation Department explores opportunities to expand and improve offerings at existing and potential park space. The Grove City Parks and Recreation Department partnered with Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks to initiate formation of Scioto Grove Metro Park in Grove

City, donating Talbott Park’s 193 acres along the Scioto River toward the development of a 640-acre regional destination. Early concepts include outdoor learning areas, fishing access to the river, shelters and bike paths.

Breck Community Park opened in September 2014 upon completion of its first phase of development

including fenced, off-leash dog areas, paved parking lots and walking and bike paths.

Further plans feature a gazebo and playground.

Fryer Park is emerging as a regional destination and recent and upcoming development bears this out. The softball diamonds at Fryer Park are served by a new concession building with plumbed bathroom facilities.

Century Village continues to expand with a reconstructed granary slated for dedication this summer. Infrastructure work will be completed this year on Orders Road to ensure more convenient, safer pedestrian, bike and automobile access.

Development also is happening in Grove City’s older parks. Windsor Park, the city’s 65-year-old baseball complex, soon will feature a fully accessible Dream Field to allow athletes of all abilities an opportunity to participate in organized baseball leagues.

The Gardens at Gantz Park is receiving the first refresh to the Garden of Yesteryear in 25 years.

Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers.

Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family.

• Work out in the early morning. Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise.

Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, and women who

get up just 45 minutes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day.

• Exercise with the kids. Working mothers looking to find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly post-meal walks. Exercising with kids is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children.

• Have a backup plan on hand. Working out at a gym can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren’t going to waste.

But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are

doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

• Look for gyms with childcare. Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

• Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of on-site exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk.

Finding time to exercise is a common dilemma for working mothers. But there are some creative ways for moms to stay fit without affecting their commitments to work and family.

Dannette’s Floral Boutique What to wear beneath graduation gowns Caps and gowns are as much a graduation tradition as the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The gown and other accoutrements are customs that have been passed down through generations, dating back to the early days of academia. Colors, stripes, positioning of graduation tassels, and the shapes of sleeves and hoods all may offer information about graduates and the degrees they earn.

Graduation attire ensures grads look uniform and professional. Although there’s little variation in how to wear the cap and gown, graduates do have flexibility with regard to the clothing they wear beneath their ensembles. It may be tempting to go casual beneath a cap and gown, but grads might regret that decision when taking post-ceremony pictures.

Some graduates think it doesn’t matter what they wear beneath the gown, feeling the gown will cover everything anyway. But that isn’t true, as grads can expect at least a portion of their attire to be peeking through their graduation gowns. Many such gowns end at the knee or slightly below, making it easy for everyone to see graduates’ pants and shoes.

Both male and female grads can benefit from wearing something classy beneath their gowns. A crisp collared shirt can look sharp for men and women alike. Guys might want to wear a tie for that extra touch. Graduation gowns tend to be solid colors and may be quite bland, so a shirt with a splash of color can make a statement that is neither bold nor silly.

Remember to wear something formfitting or slim cut under the gown. The graduation robe is voluminous enough without adding any extra girth from bulky clothing. Graduation gowns fall short of form-flattering, so wearing many layers beneath a gown will only add to the volume.

You may not have time to change

between the ceremony and the afterparty or dinner, so it’s important to wear something that is appropriate for the next venue. Save time and embarrassment by wearing clothing that will seamlessly transition to a family dinner or after-party.

Consider the bottoms worn as well.

Men can choose khakis or solid-colored slacks. Avoid wearing pants that are the same color as the graduation robe, as you want a little contrast. Women who wear skirts or dresses that end above the knee and will not show beneath the gown hem have more freedom. Avoid long skirts or dresses that can make the outfit look weighed down when paired with the gown.

Graduates’ shoes will be on full display come the big day. Therefore, wear new, clean shoes that are presentable and formal. Avoid sneakers or flip-flops, which are too casual. Keep in mind the location of the ceremony and the forecast. If you will be trekking across a muddy football field, wear a closed-in, durable shoe, as heels or open sandals may cause you to trip or sink into the turf. Dress appropriately for the temperature, too. A summer graduation may be hot and stuffy, especially outdoor ceremonies under the blazing sun. Wear lightweight clothing and plenty of sunblock to stay comfortable and safe. Dress in layers if it is chilly so you can remove layers as necessary should temperatures fluctuate.

The style of the graduation cap will affect hairstyles and other accessories, including earrings. Clean, brushed hair is most suitable for both men and women. Updos are impractical. If you want your hair off of your face, consider a braid. Keep earrings simple and tuck any chunky necklaces under the gown to maintain an elegant and streamlined look.

Graduation attire can set the tone for the ceremony and life after school. Dress appropriately because all eyes will be on you.

How families can prepare for downsizing to smaller homes

During the housing market crash of the first decade of the 21st century, many families learned to get by with less. For some of those families, less lavish living fit like a glove, prompting them to change their lifestyles for the long haul.

Downsizing to smaller homes was a move made by many families over the last several years.

Some did so out of economic need, while others preferred the simpler lifestyle that often comes with living in a smaller home. Families about to downsize to smaller homes may find the task ahead of them daunting, but there are some ways to make the transition to less spacious residences go more smoothly.

• Discuss downsizing with kids. In many ways, youngsters adapt to change better than adults. But it’s still a good idea for parents to explain downsizing to their children before they begin to prepare for their transitions to smaller living spaces.

Kids who understand the reasons behind downsizing are more likely to embrace the move, while those who have not been involved in the process may find it more difficult to adjust. When the time comes to begin choosing items to discard, allow children to choose which of their items they will not be keeping. Respect their decisions, exercising patience if kids are initially reluctant or don’t seem to understand downsizing.

• Design a downsizing system. It is not uncommon for families to be lukewarm when the initial process of downsizing begins, as people are understandably hesitant to discard items they worked hard to accumulate or cherish for various reasons. A downsizing system can make that initial period less uncomfortable, especially if family members are together on the first day of downsizing.

Let each family member take a turn choosing an item to sell, donate or discard, and continue so family members know everyone is in it together.

Once kids have seen that everyone is making sacrifices, they are more likely to embrace downsizing.

• Begin in the attic, basement and garage.

Downsizing to a smaller home often means less storage space, and attics, basements and garages

tend to serve as in-house storage units where seldom-used items accumulate over time. When trying to choose which items won’t be coming along to their smaller homes, families can start in their current homes’ attics, basements and garages, looking for items that take up too much space or those that will serve no practical purpose at their new homes.

For example, that snow blower in the garage may be a godsend when the time comes to clear your expansive current driveway of another storm’s worth of snow, but it might not be worth the space it takes up if your next home has a short driveway or just on-street parking. Once rooms used primarily for storage have been cleaned out, you can then move on to other rooms in the house to find items that won’t be going with you.

Look to sell, donate or discard items that will not serve much purpose at your next home.

• Don’t just discard, donate or sell. One of the hidden benefits of downsizing to a smaller home is the chance to make some money by selling those items you won’t be needing after you move into your new digs. Schedule a yard sale and give ample notice to neighbors or fellow

community members so you can get as much as possible for the items you no longer need.

If money is no object, donating your unwanted items to a local Goodwill store or another charity is a great way to ensure your possessions find their way into the homes of people who truly need them. When getting rid of personal items, only discard those items that are no longer functional.

If they can still serve a purpose, then someone can benefit from using them.

• Promise to revisit the decision down the road after moving. Families who are downsizing for a lifestyle change as opposed to out of economic need can promise to revisit the decision together in the future.

Families may be quick to adjust and be grateful for the change, while others might realize their decision did not produce the desired results. Promising to revisit the decision once the dust has settled can give everyone some peace of mind and make the transition that much easier.

Families downsize to smaller homes for a number of reasons, and there are many ways to make that transition go more smoothly regardless of the reasons behind the move.

Break ground with the right tools The right tools for the job can be the difference between an interminable landscaping project and one that goes smoothly and efficiently. Aspiring landscapers probably have a few shovels and rakes hanging in their garages and sheds for basic landscaping work.

Auger

Augers, both mechanical and manual, are essentially large drill bits that help move materials from one location to another. Augers are typically used to cut holes in landscapes, and they are good for post-hole drilling, which is part of the process of installing deck footings, fencing posts or other structures. Augers come in a variety of sizes, and homeowners can choose how much power they prefer. Augers can be heavy and cumbersome, and many do-it-yourselfers will find that oneperson augers are more than adequate for their projects.

Augers dig deep holes, so it is always smart to have the property surveyed prior to use. This way pipes, gas lines, buried electrical lines, and any other obstructions are clearly identified prior to drilling.

Cultivator

This building system is based on sustainable and recycled materials, reducing the need for trees. In addition, the construction process creates less waste than traditional methods and the occupants use fewer fossil fuels for a much smaller carbon footprint.

But even with this commitment to responsibility, there is no trade-off on any of the beauty aspects and aesthetics, says Blyth. “Your home can have all of the creative architectural shapes, like arches and bay windows, and high ceilings can be achieved,� says Blyth. “Outdoors, the home can be finished with attractive brick, or with stone, stucco, wood, or vinyl siding.�

How to find more time for family Working parents tend to have hectic schedules, and those responsibilities often impede on the time moms and dads get to spend with their families. Many parents strive to make more time for their families, and doing so can prove a greater reward than any promotions or bonuses earned at the office.

For those parents whose efforts to achieve better work-life balances remain works in progress, the following are a few ways to free up more time for those people who matter the most to you.

• Stop working. Once you leave the office for the day, resist the temptation to pick up your smartphone and check your email or listen to your voicemail messages. Smartphones have made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office. But many working professionals feel this convenience has a significant downside, making them feel as if they are working round-the-clock, even during moments that were initially earmarked as family time. Working parents who want to make the most of the time they have with their children should ignore their smartphones during dinner or the time

they spend hanging out with their kids or helping them do their homework.

You can always sneak a peek at your emails when the kids go to bed.

• Shake things up. If your list of responsibilities is truly taking time away from your family, don’t be afraid to shake up your routine. Though this might be a drastic change, moving closer to the office might free up more time for parents to spend with their families than any other potential change they can make. According to data from the United States Census Bureau, more than 8 percent of workers have a commute to work of 60 minutes or more. The Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey also found that nearly 24 percent of workers worked outside their county of residence, which no doubt contributed to the nearly 26-minute average commute time to work.

Parents who feel their commutes are greatly diminishing the time they get to spend with their families may want to consider moving closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families.

Many parents are determined to spend more time with their families, and those willing to make a few adjustments can find that goal is not as difficult as it seems.
