Grove City Parks and Recreation welcomes the community to their wide range of programs and services The Grove City Parks and Recreation Department manages and coordinates a wide range of recreational, educational, cultural arts and athletic programs and services for residents and visitors of all ages including outdoor education, concerts, sports and aquatics as well as fitness, enrichment and educational activities. The department, which currently manages more than 260 acres of public parkland, is one of just seven in Ohio and 116 nationwide to gain full accreditation from the Commission on Accredited Parks and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

The department’s mission is to provide safe and enjoyable environments for parks, open spaces and high-quality, innovative and cost-effective programs, while planning for the growth and diversity of current and future generations.

Grove City is one of the fastest growing communities in central Ohio, expanding by more than 25 percent between 2000 and 2010. As growth occurs, it is important for the park system to develop with the community to provide all residents with appropriate recreational opportunities.

With the objective to serve all segments of our growing community by offering passive and active recreational space and opportunities, the department continues to evaluate parkland, green space, indoor recreation facilities and program offerings to ensure that a population diverse in age, ability and interests is properly served and a goal of an engaged and healthy public is accomplished.

Grove City boasts of parkland ranging from mini- and neighborhood parks convenient to subdivisions featuring meditative space or playground equipment to larger community parks with special features that serve as destination points for Grove City and beyond. Windsor Park is home to Little LeagueŽ baseball; the Evans Center, a haven of service and socialization for older members of the community; and walking paths, playground equipment and tennis courts. There is always something going on at Fryer Park: softball games, fishing, running and biking on paved paths, hiking wooded trails, exploring a space-themed playground, movies or sledding on a hill and experiencing living history at Century Village’s expanding slate of vintage buildings. Gantz Park is a perennial favorite with serene paths winding through mature woods, play equipment and themed herb gardens with

Henceroth Park offers a green experience with solar lighting, a wooded nature trail, butterfly garden, bluebird boxes and playground equipment fashioned from recycled materials.

The Town Center Plaza, in the heart of historic Grove City Town Center, is a hub for music on Friday and Saturday summer evenings and for Halloween and Christmas celebrations. The Grove City Skate Park offers a concrete bowl surface and street obstacles for skateboarders and inline skaters. The Big Splash Family Aquatics Center offers residents and season pass holders a place to cool off through the hot summer months with body slides, an aquatic climbing wall, a lap pool and plenty of shaded and sunny places to relax out of the water.

The department uses locations throughout the city to host indoor programming.

Structured youth enrichment and child care programs allow youth to engage actively.

RecSchool in the Gantz Barn introduces preschoolers to learning in a group setting with tasks that develop social, intellectual and physical skills.

Programmed Afterschool Recreation for Kids (P.A.R.K.) offers a safe, secure environment for children that encourages physical activity and educational games. The afterschool program uses available space in the schools to ensure an easy transition for students after their school day. The historic Gantz Farmhouse is

the home for many activities centered on the herb garden.

The former South-Western City Schools (SWCS) building, the Kingston Center, hosts a variety of programs including gymnastics, dance, karate and more. Basketball and volleyball programs also utilize SWCS space.

Over the past several years, Grove City has developed parkland features to better serve the public. A meditative labyrinth was added to Gantz Park adjacent to the herb gardens. The Nature Explore Space, designed for children to experience the natural world at their own pace, was developed in Gantz Park. Expansion at Century Village, a cooperative effort of the City and the Southwestern Franklin County Historical Society, includes the completion of the Black House, a restored log cabin, and the Augenstein-Spillman Blacksmith Shop complete with a working forge available for teaching the art of metal working. In Fryer Park, the Eagle Pavilion offers citizens the option to hold a private event in a park year-round. The City also has continued to expand pedestrian and bike paths, including additions along White Road, with the eventual goal of an interconnected community.

Rain gardens which conserve and sustain natural resources are installed in Windsor, Gantz and Fryer parks through the efforts of volunteers and members of Keep Grove City Beautiful.

Grove City offers members of the public the opportunity

to rent City-owned space for social functions and athletics.

Gathering spaces available for rent include several opensided, warmer-weather options: two shelter houses and a gazebo at Gantz Park and a shelter house at Windsor Park.

Eagle Pavilion on the banks of Rotary Lake in Fryer Park offers Grove City residents an opportunity to host an event in the beautiful natural surroundings of a park while enjoying protection from the elements during any season. The facility includes an open design with generous natural lighting, an outdoor fireplace and patio area, a warming kitchen and large bathrooms. Reservations are offered on a first-come basis with discounts available for non-profit organizations.

Reservations are limited to Grove City residents age 21 or older, this includes those living within the corporation limits of Grove City and unincorporated Jackson Township and those working in Grove City. Caterers must be pre-approved and the facility is smoke- and alcoholfree.

When not in use for department leagues and events, ball fields at Windsor, Fryer and Evans parks are available for rental for baseball or softball games and tournaments.

Teams and organizations requesting to rent Windsor Park fields for multiple reservations must provide proof of requirements to participate in a scheduling lottery each December. Fryer Park fields can be rented starting in midJanuary. Following the draft,

reservations are determined on a first-come basis at the discretion of the department personnel.

The department continues to evaluate current and potential park space and facilities from needed upgrades to the 60-year old Windsor Park and further development of infrastructure in Fryer Park to the development of new park spaces. Breck Community Park will include off-leash dog areas and people-centered elements. It is slated to open in early summer. Grove City is one of 34 local supporting entities of the Central Ohio Green Pact working to enhance and protect the vibrancy of the region. Efforts include adopting sustainable land-use policies to facilitate non-motorized transportation, protect natural resources and create environmentally friendly infrastructure; encouraging environmental stewardship by residents and local businesses through education and leading by example; and preserving green space by conserving streams, wetlands, wooded areas and other resources and increasing recreational area and interconnected systems of greenways and trails fostering outdoor recreation and healthy living.

Chamber announces new Spring Farmers Market The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce has hosted the annual Grove City Farmers’ Market for more than 25 years in downtown Grove City. This year, the Chamber has announced that there will be a Spring Farmers’ Market every Saturday starting May 10 and running through June 14 on Broadway.

The Spring Market was established to include some of the crops from earlier in the season such as strawberries, plants, fresh flowers and more! Don’t worry, there will still be farmers lining the streets of downtown this summer during the annual Farmers’ Market starting on July 12 and running through September 13.

ATI Physical Therapy provides hands-on approach to get patients back to their best When ATI Physical Therapy Regional Director Brad Isaac learned ATI planned to expand in Ohio, he knew exactly where the next clinic should be – his hometown of Grove City.

Cousins Jeremy Priwer and Lori Fry are building upon Ehmann’s success and are on a mission to bring families to the farm as a place to learn, relax and enjoy.

“Customers will continue to find high-quality bedding plants and flowers here,” said Priwer, Ehmann grandson. “In light of the growing concern for sustainability and food

quality, we are also focusing on edibles,” Fry said. “We’re building educational experiences around this as well, and are excited that community groups – scout troops for example, want to take part.”

Seasonal produce will be available at the farm and local farmers markets, area restaurants, and Celebrate Local and The Hills Market Worthington.

Massey’s Pizza is “The Cadillac of Pizza” Massey’s Pizza started its long term love affair with central Ohio pizza consumers in 1949 when Jim and Dan Massucci and Romeo Siri introduced pizza to Columbus at their Italian Restaurant in Grandview.

The pizza, baked in deck ovens directly on the hearth, was cut into rectangular strips instead of pie cuts and it was served in folded brown paper bags to go. Then the Massey (Massucci) brothers opened Columbus’ first pizzeria on East Main Street in Whitehall. The rest is history.

Today Columbus is the pizza capital of the world and most pizza shops in this area use the Massey’s

cut rather than the pie cut.

As a family owned business, Massey’s has been winning the hearts of Columbus pizza lovers from one generation to the next. Massey’s has a secret dough recipe, baked on the hearth, with abundant toppings including: old world tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, aged provolone, Massey’s exclusive Guido Brand Portofino Pepperoni, house-made Italian sausage and Italian meatballs. A unique blend of ingredients and fresh ground spices has given Massey’s the “Perfect Pizza Taste”.

When Guido Casa took over Massey’s in

1962, most pizza shops were converting to chain conveyors and convection type ovens.

Guido always said, “Chain conveyors are for auto parts not for cooking pizzas”. Guido knew that the Old World way of baking was directly on the hearth, so he stayed with the old fashioned

deck ovens, kept the mom and pop taste and became known as The Godfather of Pizza.

Massey’s is always baked directly on the hearth with a specially ground cornmeal producing a thin, flavorful crust. No conveyor ovens are used here. Our ovens give us the ability to cook your pizza exactly how you
