Small-house concept for senior care gives residents a feeling of home By Encarnacion Pyle The Columbus Dispatch Despite a more than five-decade age difference, Elva Gillis, 88, and Cynthia Nkrumah, a 35-year-old nurse’s aide, sat side-by-side on a recliner in the living room, giggling and eating apple slices like a couple of school girls. Nearby, George Roloson, 84, and his wife Jayne, 91, read the newspaper at a long dining room table, the summer sun streaming in from the front window. A few seats away, another senior resident ate a slice of homemade chocolate cake while watching an aide, all of whom are called “elder assistants, cut up peppers and onions for lunch. By all appearances, inside and out, this New Albany-area nursing home could be any house, in any neighborhood — and that’s the beauty of it. “We like to say, ‘small house, big difference,’ said Gary Horning, a spokesman at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices, which is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and serves more than 4,100 people annually in all of its facilities. Just like there’s no place

like home, there are few places like Otterbein’s “small-house skillednursing and rehab neighborhoods if you can’t be home, Horning said. Dr. Bill Thomas, a Harvard-educated geriatrician, created the small-house idea and persuaded an organization to build the first in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 2003 as part of his Green House Project. The approach has been adopted by others since then and is believed by many to be the wave of the future. The largest provider of this concept in Ohio, Otterbein has eight smallhouse neighborhoods, including this one, off Harlem Road, just north of New Albany, and another in Gahanna on North Hamilton Road. Both have been built in the past 1 1/2 years. Each Otterbein neighborhood is made up of five small houses, purposely built in a residential setting so it feels like any other neighborhood, said Kevin St. John, the “guide or administrator of the New Albany-area neighborhood. Unlike more traditional nursing homes, Otterbein’s houses have no nurses’

Brooke Lavalley | Dispatch

Resident Elva Gillis has decorated her private one-bedroom suite at the Otterbein home with personal touches like a photo of her late husband. stations, long hospital corridors, or institutional kitchens or dining rooms. There also are no medicine carts parked in the halls or call lights beeping over the doors, he said. “It’s a great, small, family-type environment where everyone knows one another, said Kris Willis, 68, of Clintonville. Her mother lives in the New Albany-area community. Each Otterbein house is home to 10 residents (for a total of 50 in the neighborhood), all of whom get their own private one-bedroom suite with a bathroom.

At the heart of each home is a large hearth, circled by sofas and recliners, with a TV on one side and a quieter nook on the other for activities such as reading, card playing and raising the heart rate on an exercise bike. Off to the side is a big kitchen and breakfast bar, where “elders (aka residents) and their loved ones can help staff plan and cook meals. There’s also a long family-style dining table, a house laundry room and a spa with hairstylist’s chair and jetted tub. At the back of the house

is a screened-in porch with tables and chairs and a fenced outdoor patio, complete with a garden where residents can pick fresh veggies for their meals. “We have block parties and family get-togethers and do whatever activities the elders are interested in, Horning said. In fact, everything about the houses is centered on the residents, St. John said. “They get up and go to bed when they want to, they can eat when they want and they can do what they want, he said. “It’s their home. It seems to be paying off. Residents of the New Albany-area neighborhood reported a higher-thanaverage score on a state satisfaction survey last year, said Beverley Laubert, the state’s long-term-care ombudsman. Each house is staffed with certified nursing assistants with advanced training. In addition to providing care, these elder assistants pitch in with most household activities, including cooking, laundry and light cleaning. According to studies, nursing assistants at small homes are more knowledgeable about

residents’ likes and dislikes because of the consistent staffing. They’re also more likely to believe they can be a positive role in the seniors’ lives, report more job satisfaction and tend to stay longer on the job. There’s also a medical director and licensed nurses who go among the houses, St. John said. And residents have access to a dietitian, social-services coordinator and speech, physical and occupational therapists, as well as other medical professionals. “It’s not your grandmother’s nursing home, said Kathryn Brod, president and CEO of LeadingAge Ohio, a trade group of nonprofit nursing homes and other senior services. It’s a model that state aging director Bonnie Kantor-Burman says is truly groundbreaking and can be adopted by others. “Family and others who walk into a small house often say, ‘I could live here,’ she said. “That says a lot. epyle@dispatch.com @EncarnitaPyle This story originally appeared in The Columbus Dispatch Sunday, July 3, 2016

Parents can help students build strong study skills By Jim Benedict Center Director Sylvan Learning of Columbus Try to remember. When you were a student, did you ever ask, “How will Grammar (or Geometry or Social Studies) benefit me later in life?” Be honest. Now, return to today. When was the last time you took notes at a meeting, prioritized your “to-do” list, or organized a project from start to finish? The skills you use to do these tasks at work and at home are the same skills you learned and honed in English class (and Geometry and Social Studies). Now, your children are developing those skills that will enable them to read analytically, write and speak expressively and think strategically. And when they ask, “What good is this going to do me?”— you know that it all starts with taking notes in History class, studying for that Bio exam and juggling time to accommodate school, sports and social calendars! Organization, time management, note taking, test taking and strategic reading are all essential study skills that are first introduced to young people in the classroom, but ultimately transfer far beyond school. To help your child develop these skills in a way that is meaningful to them — mainly applying them to their “job” which is school — Sylvan Learning recommends tips that parents can follow:

Organization and time management

• Have students use a planning calendar to track daily, weekly and monthly assignments and responsibilities. • Encourage children to break down large, complex tasks into manageable pieces. • Have children prioritize homework and other tasks when they get home from school, then complete the tasks in that order. • Model the habits you want your children to emulate. Are you organized? Do you prioritize tasks and do them right away or do you procrastinate? Show your child your own to-do list and show them how you tackle your biggest tasks first.

Note taking • Don’t panic if a child’s notes look sloppy and disorganized (whether on paper or online). It’s often just a sign of a student with an active mind who is organizing things in ways that work best for him or her. • Encourage students to review their notes and even

rewrite them, if necessary, to be sure they make sense. • As they review their notes, have children identify the most important points and highlight them. Help them reorganize their notes as they go rather than waiting until the end of the term.

Test taking • Urge a student to study over a period of days or weeks instead of cramming the night before. • Be sure students go into the test with the right equipment, whether that means a calculator, class notes, textbooks or simply a pencil. • Encourage them to answer test questions they know first and then go on to the more challenging questions.

Reading • Encourage young readers to use all the clues available to them while reading, such as headlines, pictures, captions, charts, tables and graphs. • Urge them to read different types of writing, such as books of fiction and nonfiction, newspaper and magazine articles, letters and Web sites. • Talk with kids after they read a book or article. Have them tell you what the story was about, why it did or didn’t interest them and how it related to their life. Studies show that the more involved parents are with their children’s education, the better the children do in school. What the studies don’t say is that this involvement is not just in the children’s school, but in the children’s lives. Since life is a balance of basic core skills (reading and math) and personal skills, such as communication and responsibility skills (organization and time management), parents need to nourish all of these skills, not just the ones that yield a grade. The sense of accomplishment students can feel from a “job well done” is something every parent can teach by showing students how to break those big tasks into the necessary steps. Your child will thank you for teaching them this important life skill! For additional educational resources for children in grades pre-K through 12, please visit www.SylvanLearning. com or call (614) 9449510. Sylvan Learning is the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels. and personalized methods have inspired more than 2 million students to discover the joy of learning. New STEM courses provide additional inspiration and fun for students in grades 1-6. Quality Yard & Home Maintenance offers quality service at an affordable price My name is Jeremy Nestor. My wife and I have three daughters and live in Pataskala. We attend Eagle Rock church in Pickerington. My goal with this business is to “first Honor God with our business” and then run a successful all-around company to serve customers in a small service area including and surrounding our home town. I was born and raised in Pataskala and graduated from Watkins Memorial. I am very grateful for my family, business and what God has done in my life. Our vision: Be the best company for hire by performing quality service that customers deserve, which will lead to repeat business for both our landscape and handyman departments. We are a full service lawn, landscape and home maintenance company. We

are fully insured and licensed. We offer reliable, quality lawn, landscape and home maintenance at an affordable price. Our clients are typically homeowners and business owners who outsource all of their maintenance to our one-stop shop. Are you a homeowner or business owner who doesn’t have the time and/or knowledge to handle the maintenance of your home, yard or business? Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%. Call us at (614) 559-0078.

Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard.” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for

our lawn. Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a Theater Room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

This parent-only event will allow attendees to learn about the curriculum and visit active classrooms, where they can observe teachers and students in daily routines. “If you are looking for the best educational options for your young child, you really should register for this free event, said John Wuorinen, Academy’s director of admissions and financial aid. “Families interested in applying for the 2017-18 school year will have the chance to tour our facilities, see actual classrooms in action, view samples of program materials and converse with teachers and school administrators. Academy’s success comes from small classes, outstanding teachers, an inclusive culture with a global outlook, a strong emphasis on ethics and character, a plethora of athletic opportunities and a new visual arts center to both encourage and showcase student creativity. An 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio ensures that each child receives individualized attention as well as instruction in foreign language, science, music, drama, art, physical education and other curricular enhancements on a regular basis. “It meant the world to me—to us—that we left him this morning in good, kind, nurturing hands and that he returned totally exhilarated by the day, wrote a

KEMBA is proud to serve Gahanna The Credit Union has better rates, lower fees and people who care KEMBA Financial Credit Union opened its doors to the Gahanna community in March 2015, and is proud to serve this influential and growing central Ohio community. What first began as the Credit Union for Kroger Bakery employees in 1933 has since grown to be the largest credit union in central Ohio, serving more than 80,000 members and the employees of more than 150 central Ohio companies. Since its inception, KEMBA has served the community as a not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned by its membership. Simply put, KEMBA is not a bank, it is a financial partner. In general, credit unions are a smart alternative to banks because you are an owner, not just a customer. In fact, because KEMBA exists solely to serve its members (customers), not thirdparty stock holders, profits are returned to its membership in the form of lower fees, and better rates; and, credit unions, like KEMBA, offer all the same financial products as banks. KEMBA’s main purpose is to promote thrift; and, decisions are made locally and with the members’ best interests in mind. KEMBA representatives are always happy to meet with members to help them make the right decisions specific to their individual financial needs. A common misconception about credit unions is a lack of convenient locations. Many credit unions, like KEMBA, participate in a Shared Branching Network which allows members to conduct account transactions at more than 5,000 credit unions nationwide. Plus, members can utilize more than 50,000 ATMs across the country without paying a surcharge fee. As part of KEMBA’s mission to offer

competitive financial services that contribute to the well-being of its members and their families, KEMBA is pleased to provide free credit counseling services to its membership. Certified financial counselors can help members examine their financial situation and recommend solutions. KEMBA also provides retirement planning

and investment services to help members create individualized plans to meet their needs. Like larger financial institutions, KEMBA also serves the small business community. Products such as checking and savings are available, but also commercial loans and merchant services.

KEMBA is committed to providing small business owners with the tools needed to manage their finances. Financial security is a significant benefit of credit union membership, for both personal and business accounts. Credit union deposits are insured up to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, similar to insurance at a bank; but on top of that, KEMBA provides an additional $250,000 in private deposit insurance. Simply put, KEMBA is a safe, solid and sound financial option for central Ohio families and businesses. When you choose a credit union, you are not only choosing a better way to bank for yourself and your family, but you are also choosing to keep your money local. Credit unions pride themselves on being an asset in their communities, and KEMBA is proud to offer community support in Gahanna and throughout central Ohio.
