Local auto dealer finds sales success not seen since the ’80s In the eight years since Lash Chevrolet opened its doors in Johnstown, they’ve increased sales to levels not seen at this location since Reagan was in the White House. But how have they achieved this remarkable growth in such a competitive automotive environment? I caught up with owner Eric Lash to get his take on things. “From day one, my goal was to bring new Chevy sales back to levels from the ’70s and ’80s,” says Lash. “With a growing community around us, I knew that all we needed to do was focus on one brand, offer great prices, and really take care of our customers— a modern approach with an oldfashioned touch.” With annual sales of over 500 new Chevrolets (almost 3 times greater than their first year in business), apparently his strategy has worked. The first thing you’ll notice when you visit the lot (located on Route 62, eight miles from New Albany) is the sheer number of vehicles. From Impalas to Corvettes, Silverados to Suburbans— there is an abundance of selection. Lash explains, “In our first year of business, we usually had about 100 new Chevys on the ground at any given time. Today, through a ‘turn and earn’ allocation system, we have grown to over 200. You can’t sell what you don’t have, and earning more inventory is a daily focus. We
Lash Chevrolet is located on Rt 62, eight miles from New Albany, visit their website at LashChevy.com to see their current inventory. even contact struggling dealers and purchase their excess inventory.” In addition, Lash says that the dealership’s online strategy has also boosted sales: “We keep it simple. Customers can visit LashChevy.com to see the price of every new vehicle
with current rebates, before they even set foot on the lot. And we post several actual photos (not the usual “stock photos”) to give buyers a real feel for the specific vehicle. I think people appreciate the transparency.” The explosive growth of northeast
Columbus has also helped. “I grew up in Gahanna,” Lash says, “and it used to take 25 minutes to get to Johnstown. Today, I can leave our showroom and be in Worthington within 20 minutes. So that’s definitely helped us attract new customers. The idea is to get them to consider us. Because once they give us a try, they keep coming back.” One reason for this may be the personal touch you receive from Lash Chevrolet. Despite the newly remodeled showroom, Lash makes sure that his store retains a small-town feel: “I’ve been working at this location for over 20 years, and some employees have been here even longer. This year, salesman Larry Lane celebrates his 50th year at our location! Call me oldfashioned, but I think that kind of stuff still matters.” One step into the showroom and it was clear to me that he wasn’t exaggerating. No one ambushed me as I walked in, but a courteous salesman, named Brad, greeted me and answered all of my questions. He was low-key, yet professional. Turns out that he lives local and has worked at Lash for seven years. It was truly refreshing. So if you are looking for big city price and selection, with a small-town touch—check out LashChevy.com and then take a short eight mile drive up Route 62 off Interstate 161 to Lash Chevrolet in Johnstown.

Otterbein Gahanna licensed and certified by Ohio Department of Health and accepting applications GAHANNA, OH – Otterbein is happy to announce that their Gahanna location is now licensed and certified by the Ohio Department of Health. This means that the Neighborhood has passed initial licensure, certification and Life Safety Code. Otterbein Gahanna is now accepting new admissions for both rehabilitative and long term care. The small houses are a unique concept designed to de-institutionalize traditional skilled nursing home care. The neighborhood includes five small houses, each 7,400 square feet, in a residential setting. Each small house is home to 10 residents, and each includes private suites, a large communal living room, dining and kitchen area with home-cooked meals, a schedule that is up to the resident, and rehab care that is exceptional, all in a home-setting close to everything residents need. An Otterbein small house equals a big dif-
ference. Otterbein is pleased to support this innovative approach that effectively meets the unique needs of seniors for long-term care and/or rehabilitation. The Otterbein neighborhood in Gahanna is one of two locations in Columbus, the other is located in New Albany. Otterbein now operates seven Small House Neighborhoods in the state of Ohio. “The concept of the neighborhoods and small houses is like nothing else in the Columbus area,” said Nikki Fulton, Otterbein Marketing Coordinator. “When I first toured the small houses, I knew this is how I would want my loved ones to live during their golden years. I’m eager to share this concept and way of life with New Albany and Gahanna residents. Otterbein is changing the way long-term care and rehabilitation is viewed by the community. It allows rehab residents to learn how to be suc-
cessful when returning home by rehabbing in a home-like setting and not in traditional therapy gym. Elders live their daily lives with their care catered around their schedule.” Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices, a senior health care services organization, long-defined by innovation and compassion, has been gaining support and momentum since its founding. Driven by vision and faith, Otterbein is nationally recognized for its forward approach to enhancing the lives and holistic growth of older persons. While this is Otterbein’s first foray into central Ohio, its tradition and quality of service have a century-long track record, recently upgraded to an A rating, and “stable” outlook, by Standard & Poors. Founded in 1912, Otterbein serves more than 3,000 people annually, and is related to the East Ohio and West Ohio Conferences of the United Methodist
Church. Its humble beginnings began in October 1912 when Dr. J. M. Phillippi’s bold dream of his church, the United Brethren, establishing a home for the aged and orphans materialized. Eventually, the non-profit health and human service ministry turned its sole focus on senior living. Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices currently maintains five full-service lifestyle communities (Lebanon, Cridersville, North Shore, Portage Valley and St. Marys); seven skilled nursing and rehabilitation neighborhoods (Maineville, Springboro, Middletown, Monclova, Perrysburg, New Albany and Gahanna; with two in development in Union Township and Loveland); and a southwestern Ohio-based home health and hospice agency. For more info about the neighborhoods or to submit an application call Nikki at (614) 981-6854, or visit www.otterbein.org/neighborhoods.

How to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet One of the first questions vegetarians are asked when acknowledging their dietary preferences is, “Are you getting enough protein?” Many people assume it’s impossible to consume sufficient protein on a diet that consists largely of fruits and vegetables. But many vegetarians get the protein their bodies need. Many people are overly concerned with protein intake, eating more than they really need to meet health requirements. The Recommended Daily Allowance of protein in the United States is .36 grams of protein for every pound a person weighs. Many people need less protein than they think, which is likely one reason many nonvegetarians eat roughly one-third more protein than vegetarians. The Vegetarian Resource Group says there are no distinct health advantages to consuming a diet high in protein.
How protein works The body digests protein into amino acids to fuel its activity and aid in tissue repair. There are 20 different amino ac-
ids in food, but the human body can only make 11 of them. Your body cannot synthesize essential amino acids, which must come from your diet. The nine With a balanced diet, essential vegetarians can get the amino acids, protein they need. which cannot be produced by the body, must be obtained strictly from food. Foods that contain all of the amino acids necessary are called “complete protein sources.” Many animal products are great sources of complete protein, but complete protein also can be found in plant-based foods. One food that is a complete protein source is the soybean. Other plant-based foods may not be
complete proteins by themselves, but when eaten together, can complement one another to provide all the necessary amino acids. For example, combining beans and legumes with certain grains, seeds and nuts is a way to get the protein one needs. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says that intentionally combining foods at strict ratios is not necessary. As long as your diet contains a variety of foods, many protein needs are easily met.

Many fad diets point to high protein sources for weight loss and improved athletic performance. But reports published in journals like Nutrition and Cancer and the American Journal of Epidemiology indicate high intake of protein, particularly

Quality Yard & Home Maintenance offers quality service at an affordable price My name is Jeremy Nestor. My wife and I have three daughters and live in Pataskala. We attend Eagle Rock church in Pickerington. My goal with this business is to “first Honor God with our business” and then run a successful all-around company to serve customers in a small service area including and surrounding our home town. I was born and raised in Pataskala and graduated from Watkins Memorial. I am very grateful for my family, business and what God has done in my life. Our vision: Be the best company for hire by performing quality service that customers deserve, which will lead to repeat business for both our landscape and handyman departments. We are a full service lawn, landscape and home maintenance company. We
are fully insured and licensed. We offer reliable, quality lawn, landscape and home maintenance at an affordable price. Our clients are typically homeowners and business owners who outsource all of their maintenance to our one-stop shop. Are you a homeowner or business owner who doesn’t have the time and/or knowledge to handle the maintenance of your home, yard or business? Our process will ensure your work gets done the right way, and cheaper than calling all the different contracting companies, and still guarantee that you are satisfied. We offer a Moneyback Guarantee! We will work with you until you are satisfied or refund the amount of labor charged. Give us 1% of your trust and we will earn the other 99%.
Don’t take our word for it. Here is what others are saying about us: “I employed the services of Quality Yard and Home Maintenance last year after my backyard succumbed to the scorching summer heat and insect damage. There were things growing in my backyard that made it look like a desert, and I thought my neighbors would crucify me! Jeremy and his professional team restored my yard and it looked beautiful! I’ve employed other lawn care companies in the past who only seemed interested in making money instead of taking care of their clients’ lawn needs. Quality Yard specialists treated my lawn according to the weather and what my particular lawn needed instead of strictly on a schedule. I also had them plant a couple of trees this season, trim some shrubs, and complete a fall bed cleanup. They did an amazing job, and some neighbors who used other lawn care services have asked me about Quality Yard. ” - Kevin Kinney, Westerville, OH “Quality Yard and Home Maintenance brought my lawn back to life. We began working with them shortly after moving into our new home three years ago, and they have done an excellent job of maintaining our landscaping and caring for our lawn.
Their crew is always reliable, punctual and dependable. Jeremy will bend over backwards to make sure you’re satisfied with their work.” Thanks, - Dave Stukus, New Albany, OH “Jeremy, Just wanted to tell you that your helper did a fine job on everything. You have found a way to get the very best workforce.” Thank you - John Murphy, Pataskala, OH “Quality Yard has been treating my lawn and bushes for the past three years. Before I employed them I tried other national companies with lackluster results. Jeremy told me when he first saw my lawn that it would take a few years to get it where I wanted it. He was absolutely correct now my yard is the envy of my subdivision. I always receive comments about how full and green my lawn and bushes look. In addition to my lawn he finished my basement last winter turning it into a theater room that is just perfect for family escapes. Jeremy is very fair with his pricing and ALWAYS does a quality job. Highly recommended!” - Michael Brammer, Pataskala, OH

KEMBA is proud to serve Gahanna The Credit Union has better rates, lower fees and people who care KEMBA Financial Credit Union opened its doors to the Gahanna community in March 2015, and is proud to serve this influential and growing central Ohio community. What first began as the Credit Union for Kroger Bakery employees in 1933 has since grown to be the largest credit union in central Ohio, serving more than 80,000 members and the employees of more than 150 central Ohio companies. Since its inception, KEMBA has served the community as a not-forprofit financial cooperative, owned by its membership. Simply put, KEMBA is not a bank, it is a financial partner. In general, credit unions are a smart alternative to banks because you are an owner, not just a customer. In fact, because KEMBA exists solely to serve its members (customers), not third-party stock holders, profits are returned to its membership in the form of lower fees, and better rates; and, credit unions, like KEMBA, offer all the same financial products as banks. KEMBA’s main purpose is to promote thrift; and, decisions are made locally and with the members’ best interests in mind. KEMBA representatives are always happy to meet with members to help them make the right decisions specific to their individual financial needs. A common misconception about credit unions is a lack of convenient locations. Many credit unions, like KEMBA, participate in a Shared Branching Network which allows members to conduct account transactions at more than 5,000 credit unions nation-
wide. Plus, members can utilize more than 50,000 ATMs across the country without paying a surcharge fee. As part of KEMBA’s mission to offer competitive financial services that contribute to the well-being of its members and their families, KEMBA is pleased to provide free credit counseling services to its membership. Certified financial counselors can help members examine
their financial situation and recommend solutions. KEMBA also provides retirement planning and investment services to help members create individualized plans to meet their needs. Like larger financial institutions, KEMBA also serves the small business community. Products such as checking and savings are available, but also commercial loans and merchant services.
KEMBA is committed to providing small business owners with the tools needed to manage their finances. Financial security is a significant benefit of credit union membership, for both personal and business accounts. Credit union deposits are insured up to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, similar to insurance at a bank; but on top of that, KEMBA provides an additional $250,000 in private deposit insurance. Simply put, KEMBA is a safe, solid and sound financial option for central Ohio families and businesses. When you choose a credit union, you are not only choosing a better way to bank for yourself and your family, but you are also choosing to keep your money local. Credit unions pride themselves on being an asset in their communities, and KEMBA is proud to offer community support in Gahanna and throughout central Ohio.

Make the most of “dinner and a movie” night The “perfect date night” differs depending on the couple. Some couples might prefer a night on the town during which they get dolled up and visit a five-star restaurant, while others might find a laid back night at home makes for the ideal night for two. Dinner and a movie has long been a go-to for couples who prefer something short of a fancy night out but more extravagant than a relaxing night at home. While making plans to dine out and catch a movie is not complicated, there are some things couples can do to make sure such nights go off without a hitch. • Make a dinner reservation. If you’re going out on a Friday or Saturday night, be sure to make a dinner reservation in advance. Chances are strong other couples have similar plans, and you don’t want to miss the movie because you were stuck waiting for a table at the restaurant. Dinner and a movie nights tend to be impromptu, but make a reservation a few nights in advance if you’re planning on going out on a popular date night.
• Leave ample time between dinner and the start of the movie. No one wants to rush through a meal, especially couples who may not get too many chances to dine out and enjoy each other’s conversation. If your movie begins at 9 p.m., make a dinner
reservation for 6 or 6:30 so you have ample time to eat, enjoy each other’s company and make it to the theater on time. If you’re planning on seeing a highly anticipated movie on its opening weekend, be sure to leave enough time between dinner and the start time of the movie so you can get to the theater early enough to get good seats. • Buy your movie tickets in advance. Much like you want to make a dinner reservation so you can get a table, you also want to buy your tickets in advance so you aren’t shut out if the theater sells
out. If you’re worried about committing to the movie too far in advance and want to wait to buy tickets, choose a fallback movie to see just in case the film you were hoping to see sells out before you can buy tickets. • Know the addresses of nearby theaters and show times. Many a couple has arrived at a movie theater only to find the movie they planned to see is sold out. Oftentimes, such letdowns can be remedied by driving to another theater nearby that is showing the movie at a slightly later time than the initial theater the couple visited. Know your movie schedules and theater addresses so you have options should your movie be sold out. Download an app like Fandango on your phone so you don’t waste precious time trying to find show times and addresses on the Internet. Dinner and a movie is a staple for couples’ date nights, and there are some tricks of the trade couples can employ to ensure their next date night is memorable for all the right reasons.

You can refinance your mortgage or your autos loans — and even consolidate your debt to get a better rate. Telhio is currently offering up $1,000 cash back for refinancing your auto loan from another institution with Telhio. Does your loved one: 1. Walk unsteadily, have unexplained bruises, or is tentative in walking or standing? One-third of older adults fall each year, often starting a downward spiral of hospital stays. In addition, those who fear falling often restrict activities, making them even weaker and more insecure—and more likely to fall. 2. Look thinner than normal? Many older adults have poor nutrition because they don’t plan or fix meals—and because they may not have enough food in the house. 3. Seem quiet or depressed? Feeling sad, regretful or fearful is not normal, even for older adults. Isolation and changes in health can lead to depression, a problem for 25% of older adults. 4. Have difficulty remembering major events? Memory problems can affect every area of an older adult’s life, from medication mistakes to unsafe driving, poor bedtime habits and lack of personal care.
5. Have a large quantity of medications? Older adults face serious health risks if they don’t take their medication properly. If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should begin planning for the future of your loved one by assessing medical conditions, level of income/assets and preferences for long-term care. Also think about your own capability for caregiving. How much time, energy and money can you contribute to your loved one’s needs? Whether it is three hours a day or 24, employees of Home Care Assistance make a difference in people’s lives by providing the highest level of service and allowing older adults to live safely and happily at home—where 89% of older adults want to stay. Thank you, central Ohio, for making us the premier provider of home care for older adults. We are honored by the trust so many families place in us!

Throw a hauntingly good Halloween party Halloween is a special day that delights children of all ages and helps adults feel like kids at heart. Few people want the fun to end once trick-or-treating is over. By throwing a Halloween party, revelers can continue celebrating well into the evening. When hosting a Halloween party, it helps to determine who will be in attendance before making any plans. Parties that include children should be PG in nature, and hosts should find the right balance between scary and fun. While you want to have a certain measure of the macabre, make sure you don’t send young guests home with nightmares. Reserve gruesome decorations and details for adult-only parties. Halloween parties do not necessarily need to be ghoulish to be fun. Try a glittery gala masquerade party or decorate exclusively in orange and black. Classically eerie parties may feature ravens and crows, or they can be subtlely spooky with red candles and heavy curtains. Many people can’t wait to dress up for a Halloween party, even picking out their costumes months in advance. Still, not everyone feels comfortable donning a costume. To welcome all guests, don’t make costumes mandatory. One way around this is to set up a Halloween Disguise Table full of accessories that anyone can borrow and use to alter their appearance. Goofy glasses, strange hats, adhesive mustaches or masks can be fun. If someone didn’t feel comfortable dressing in full costume, he or she may be more apt to pop in a set of plastic fangs or put on a spinning bow tie. Food is an integral part of any party and can enhance Halloween soirées.
Tasty, themed treats are an important part of any Halloween party. Candy is a pivotal component of Halloween and you can play off that theme at your party. Set up a candy bar full of appropriately hued candies of all shapes and sizes. Put them on display in clear glass or plastic canisters so they add to your Halloween décor. Some people like to get creative with Halloween cuisine, crafting foods into
items that may look like parts of the body or other symbols of the holiday. Cookie cutters can turn sandwiches, desserts, biscuits and many other foods into different shapes. However, foods also can be made a tad more spooky simply by renaming them or presenting them in interesting containers. Why not serve punch out of a
fish aquarium? Other beverages can be housed in jugs or old bottles and labeled “potions.” Use laboratory instruments, such as petri dishes, vials and beakers, to serve snacks. A Halloween party makes for a fun night, and there is no limit to what hosts can do when planning their scary soirées.
Have an eek-o-friendly Halloween Halloween has transformed from a spiritual celebration of the harvest and a time to pay respect to departed relatives into a more lighthearted day for kids and adults alike. Billions of dollars are spent every year on everything from Halloween candy to costumes. Halloween may not be the most eco-friendly day of the year, but there are ways to make this beloved holiday a little less taxing on the environment.
Reusable products Investigate the ways items can be put to use year after year rather than having to buy entirely new items each Halloween. It’s estimated that Americans use more than 380 million plastic bags every year, according to About News website’s environmental issues experts. Reusable tote bags have helped cut down plastic bag consumption when shopping at stores, while cloth or canvas bags also can make for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional Halloween totes. Have kids get into the habit of decorating their own canvas Halloween totes with fabric paint and other embellishments. The bag can be packed away with Halloween decorations and used year after year. Another way to reuse this Halloween is to store costumes
and decorations properly so that they will not become damaged. Trends come and go, so a costume that was used a few years ago may be useful again in due time. Take proper care with decorations so that they can be used for years to come.
as this reduces fuel consumption and can help boost the local economy. Many organic and eco-friendly candy options are now available, so shop at organic grocery stores or health food stores to browse their selections.
Cut energy consumption
Walk Halloween night
Halloween is an easy time to reduce energy consumption at home. Fortunately, shadows and darkness fit with the theme of the holiday, so dim the lights or leave them off and use soy candles to create that spooky ambiance. Reduce energy consumption during manufacturing and importing costumes by trying your hand at creative costumes made at home. Many craft items and older clothing can be repurposed into clever costumes for people of all ages. Arrange for a costume swap with other people so that costumes can be rotated and used again.
Stay close to home and do all of your trick-or-treating on foot to reduce fuel consumption. If rural conditions make it difficult to walk the neighborhood, plan a gathering where kids can trick-or-treat in one location, such as in a school parking lot or auditorium. When driving is an absolute must, carpool as much as possible.
Eco-friendly candy Halloween is largely about the treats. The candies and other items handed out at the door also can be customized so that they are more eco-friendly. Choose treats with minimal packaging or packaging that can be recycled. When possible, purchase treats from local stores,
Use safe makeup Face paints and other makeup can transform ordinary people into just about any persona. However, very often makeup can contain lead or other metals, which not only can be harmful to personal health, but also the environment. Be sure to read the ingredients on makeup used and look for safe or even organic products. Halloween is awash in purple, orange and black. But this beloved holiday can be enhanced Reusable tote bags are an eco-friendly way to collect Halwith a little green thinking as loween bounty. well.

Stop by The Mug for a great time! Oldest bar in Gahanna invites residents to stop by and see the remodeled interior and beautiful patio! The Mug is the oldest bar in Gahanna established in 1964. Phil Stover purchased The Mug from his brother Rick Stover this past February. They are famous for their amazing stone-baked pizzas and subs, including a great garlic butter pepperoni and chicken chipotle ranch pizza! The Mug features an all new Ohio State University remodeled interior, two beautiful patio spaces and a giant wooden barrel tapper that pours everything from your refreshing Bud Light to a delicious Fat Tire. Patrons can also find everything from darts, cornhole and billiards to karaoke and live music. Call or stop in to find out more about league and tournament play. The Mug’s professional and friendly staff are here to make sure you are taken care of and always having a good time! Look for us under the giant American flag at the intersection of Route 62, Agler and Stygler roads in west side of Gahanna! A few tricks of the trade can be employed to prevent apples from decaying.
How to store fresh apples Apples are a popular fruit that are grown in different places around the world. Come autumn, apples can be seen filling farm stands and supermarkets all over North America. Apples are available year-round, but many apple lovers insist there’s nothing better than plucking an apple directly off the tree in the fall. Apple orchards and pick-your-own farms are visited each autumn by apple lovers anxious for apples’ tart and juicy taste. Many people pick more apples than they can eat in a few days, so it pays to learn how to store apples properly so none of them go to waste. Start by picking a variety of apple that won’t go bad too quickly. Apple growers can make suggestions, but Jonathan, Rome, Fuji and Granny Smith varieties tend to last longer than other varieties. Choose apples that are free of blemishes or soft spots. The adage that “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” bears some truth. Apples give off ethylene gas as they decay, and a rotting apple can quickly affect nearby apples. A good place to store apples in the short-term is in the refrigerator where it is cool. Put the apples in the crisper drawer. Do not store them with vegetables, as the apples may cause the veggies to ripen or rot prematurely. If you plan on long-term storage, a few extra steps are necessary. Apples need to be individually wrapped so they will not come in contact with other apples.
Newsprint works great; just be sure to pick the pages that are done in black ink because colored ink may contain heavy metals. Once wrapped, place each apple in a container padded with more newspaper. Store this container in a cool place, such as a garage, root cellar or screened-in porch. Apples can last a couple of months if stored in this manner. Keep apples away from potatoes, as potatoes can cause the fruit to prematurely decay. Another way to store apples is to turn them into preserves or apple sauce. By boiling the apples and sealing them shut in canning jars, that fresh apple taste can be enjoyed long after the apples are picked. Consult with a canning expert about the right way to begin the process. Fruits are generally canned using a boiling-water canner. However, some fruits, like apples, can be canned with a pressure canner. Because apples tend to discolor when the flesh meets the air, use a little lemon juice to prevent this while canning. Turning apples into candied apples also can help them keep longer. Apples can be dipped into a sugary coating, caramel or toffee to be enjoyed later on. Of course, you always can bake apples into a pie as well, then freeze the pie for another day. Autumn would be incomplete without apples. Get ready for apple season by developing a storage plan before you visit the orchard.

Enjoy a frugal fall road trip Road trips are a staple of autumn for many motorists. Fall foliage and moderate temperatures make the months of September and October ideal months to hit the open road for weekend getaways. Fall road trips rarely take drivers too far away from home, but traveling can still be costly. Fortunately, there are many ways to make road trips more affordable without sacrificing fun. • Explore alternatives to more traditional lodging. If your road trip includes an overnight stay, consider alternatives to traditional lodging. Hotels might stretch your budget, but depending on where you plan to go, you might have some less traditional alternatives. Airbnb.com allows homeowners and even some apartment dwellers to rent their homes and apartments to travelers, and these listings may pale in comparison to rates offered by nearby hotels. If weather permits, look for local campsites and spend your nights sleeping outdoors under the autumn stars. If you prefer hotels, look for deals on sites like Priceline.com or Hotwire. com, which may offer heavy discounts on rooms. • Take steps to conserve fuel. Lodging might prove your biggest expense on a fall road trip, but fuel likely won’t be too far behind. Drivers can cut fuel costs in several ways. Before beginning your trip, take your car in for a tuneup so any issues that might affect fuel efficiency are addressed before you hit the open road. Poorly inflated tires force the engine to work harder and burn more fuel, so make sure tire pressure matches the levels recommended in your owner’s manual before embark-
ing on your trip and even along the way if you feel your car is not running as smoothly as it could be. Another way to conserve fuel is to remove excess items from the trunk. If you don’t plan to hit the links on your trip, leave your golf clubs at home. • Plot your route. Spontaneity may make fall road trips more fun, but drivers looking to save money should plot their routes in advance so they can avoid potentially costly problems like detours or road work that can waste fuel and lead to hours sitting in traffic. Use a GPS device during your trip so you can be alerted to any unexpected developments that might cost you time and money. Plotting your route in advance also allows you to find affordable dining and lodging options and choose roads that don’t require drivers to pay tolls. • Invite some friends and family along. Inviting friends and family on a weekend getaway can make the trip more fun and more affordable. If you have room in the car, inviting friends along allows you to split fuel costs, and you may even save on lodging if you find a hotel that won’t charge for extra guests in the room. Friends and family also can help split the cost of supplies. • Bring your own food. Food is another big expense road trippers must account for. But you can save money on food by bringing your own meals along on the trip. Prepare some sandwiches the morning that you leave and keep them fresh in a cooler so you don’t have to pay for lunch. In addition, pack some snacks so you and your passengers can quickly and affordably quell any hunger pangs that arise while you’re on the road. If you plan to stay in a place with

Road trips are a staple of autumn, when drivers can still enjoy the open road without breaking the bank.
Get your home fall- and winterready with 5 simple projects If boots, a warm hat and a tunedup snow blower are the only items on your winter preparation list, your home maintenance plan may need a makeover. These simple home maintenance projects can help lower your energy bills, prevent more costly repairs and/ or increase the lifespan of your home. 1. Heating and ventilation – Examine your fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of your furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality. 2. Seal windows and doors – If not properly sealed, windows and doors can be a major culprit for heat loss. To keep the warm air inside, inspect the weather-stripping around your home’s windows and doors for leaks, rot or decay. Repair or replace structural framing, and caulk inside and out, if necessary. 3. Insulate well – One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such
as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. 4. Backyard care – Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems. 5. Roof and gutters – Inspect your roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from the home to prevent flooding. When it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of your home.
