Due to its rapid success and popularity, they opened their second location in Dublin. “Back in 2009, while walking the streets of New York City, we stumbled into a blow-dry bar. An hour later, we were hooked. We couldn’t believe a place like this existed. The minute we got back to Columbus, we made a blow-dry appointment at almost every salon trying to find the perfect blowout. After months and months of searching for a great blowout, we decided to take the matter into our own hands. We wanted the women of Columbus to feel the same type of happiness, ease and confidence that we felt after getting a blowout.� What exactly is the blowdry bar craze? The Blowout Bar offers a product—an experience, rather—that brings housewives, CEOs, and 10-year-olds to a place they can relax, chat and come out feeling like a new person—all for just $40. and color to the traditional salons and focus on the blowout. “Our licensed cosmetologists simply wash, blow-dry and style your hair within 45 minutes,� said Kristin DeJohn They’ve gotten so popular now that you pretty much need an appointment on the weekends.  “We have young teenagers to older women. It’s not just necessarily a woman who comes in before a special event, although we have a lot of those. Dance Academy brings families and communities together As you walk through the halls of the Columbus DanceArts Academy there is excitement in the air. Families from communities in the northwest Columbus area gather at Columbus DanceArts Academy to experience dance in various classes, dance art forms, and dance programs and performances. Young children spin and jump in the hallways with eagerness before entering their dance classes. Outside a studio door, CDA Company dancers stretch and smile at the younger dancers before entering their studios to rehearse performance choreography. As dancers flow in and out of the dance studios, adults chat about how fun it is to participate in an Adult Open Dance class. Columbus DanceArts Academy provides a family friendly environment that brings families and people of all ages together to share high quality dance education and performances. “Fall registration is one of my favorite times of the year at CDA. A large number of new and returning students enroll in dance classes and partake in them with great enthusiasm. Dance offers a natural and fun way to express oneself through movement and music,” said Academy Director, Robin Smith. Dance and music has been proven to
develop the brain, enhance coordination, promote flexibility, strength, and rhythmic skills and develops self esteem. Said Robin, “To witness the delight that dance brings to so many dancers in the community is very heart warming.” Robin stated that, “Taking dance into the community and sharing dance with families is an important aspect of CDA as a performancebased dance academy.” The CDA Company and Company Track dancers are presently preparing for the production of Haunted Hip Hop that includes a dance-along with children in the audience at Dublin’s Spooktacular, Boo At the Zoo, and the Worthington Rec Center. CDA dance students are also rehearsing a new holiday production of Alice in Winterland that will be performed at area elementary schools, at senior homes and for the public. “There is a shared experience between the performers and the families in the audience that stimulates a magical human connection,” said Robin. Central Ohio’s Opioid Challenge: More treatment on the way By Traci Mason Executive Director of Recovery Works Columbus As Attorney General DeWine gathers the Ohio 60 Minutes group (scheduled for this September) to review the status of the opioid addiction challenge, I take the helm of a new residential treatment center scheduled to open shortly. As 60 minutes reported last year, 23 Ohioans died weekly from heroin. Sadly, the incidence of the disease called addiction continues in our state. As reported by The Columbus Dispatch in September, 2015: “A new silent killer, addictive and lethal, is stalking Ohioans and killing them in massive numbers. Fentanyl¸a synthetic, highly addictive opiate 50 times more potent than heroin, was involved in 502 fatal overdoses last year, pushing Ohio drug deaths to 2,482, a staggering 17.6 percent jump over 2013, the Ohio Department of Health reported on Thursday.” To those of us who have invested our careers in addiction treatment, this is a battle cry for the delivery of more effective treatment to our population. This disease impacts urban, suburban and rural areas, young and old and is agnostic to race and gender. Viable treatment means taking a holistic approach in the treatment of an individual by addressing their physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological needs. Anything that provides less, misses the point. I have spent 25 years watching this disease hurt people and families and I am proud that we now live in a time where those impacted can publicly seek treatment without embarrassment. In fact, at our ground breaking, one man with three
children impacted by addiction stood and said that “he was proud to honor a rehab center coming to town.” Recovery Works Columbus is part of a full continuum of care that includes residential, outpatient and transitional living environments. Residential treatment generally includes at least a three-week stay. The people whom we have treated explain it best: Imagine a young woman who was a cheerleader, good student and family member and was introduced to drugs and alcohol when she was 13 years old. By the time she was 18 there were consequences. She went to jail and shoplifted. She stole her mother’s wedding band to support her habit. She looked her mother dead in the eye and swore she did not take it. She entered residential treatment. She now works with us and help others reclaim their health and their lives. She gives hope to people like her. I have seen the devastation that substance abuse has on individuals, families, and the community. Then, I see the success of treatment, seeing mothers in recovery getting their children back, families finding their own homes for the first time in their lives, men securing employment to take care of their families, and entire families being reunited. When there is treatment, there is life and hope. Ohio is where we live together. It is my hope that through organizations like mine, we can positively impact statistics and become known for what we are doing right. Traci Mason has worked in addiction treatment for 25 years.
