DCSD changes the face of beauty with Cosmetic dermatology services Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery of Dublin is revolutionizing the way cosmetic dermatology is provided in central Ohio. Skincare and dermatology are some of the fastest evolving industries in healthcare. New technologies have made skincare and dermatological procedures continue to reach the highest levels of sophistication. Why such rapid growth in the industry? Put simply: what we know, and are getting to know, about skin tells us that skincare is as important as healthy foods and exercise to overall wellbeing. The office of Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery (DCSD) is at the forefront of the skincare revolution. Dr. Mary Beth Luca, licensed dermatologist, and the rest of the DCSD staff are committed to providing cutting-edge, fantastic results to patients of all ages. The central Ohio office specializes in procedures ranging from pediatrics to anti-aging to treating cancer. “Your skin is the largest organ your body has,” said Dr. Luca, D.O., F.A.O.C.D. “As with anything, it changes with age, due to time and exposure to the elements. That’s why we focus on treating all types of cosmetic and surgical dermatology issues.”
What’s important to know about dermatology?
Dermatology means the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders. Skin disorders are an all-encompassing term that can refer to disorders stemming from both internal and external factors. Dermatology is crucial to treating skin disorders because they can be painful, embarrassing and even life-threatening. “Your skin is a window to your overall health. When something is happening inside your body, it often will present itself in the form of a skin condition,” Dr. Luca said. “That’s why it is important to give your skin the proper care and attention it needs each and every day.
How can I take care of my skin? The first step in taking good care of your skin is to fully appreciate that it is a living thing. Just like us, the skin needs food, water, rest and protec-
tion. Try to make sure your skin gets those four elements of care each and every day. For most people, “rest” happens when you are sleeping at home and the skin is free from the elements and heavy products. Many people overlook water as a crucial component of effective skincare. Drinking lots of water can flush the skin of toxins, promote a healthy glow, and help stave off skin issues. In addition to helping your skin rejuvenate from the insideout with hydration and rest, using external sources of skincare is extremely beneficial. Think of skin “protection” from the elements (sun, pollution, toxins, etc.) inside and out. To protect, use beauty products that are free of toxins/harsh chemicals and most importantly: protect skin from the sun. There are physical and chemical sunscreens available to fit every person’s sun care needs. Skin “food” refers to eating healthily and using great products to treat skincare concerns. The DCSD team can help to determine each individual’s need for skincare routine success. If you’re hitting the “big four” of skincare: rest, water, protection and food; you’re on the right track to a lifetime of healthy skin. However, no skincare routine is foolproof and sometimes, skin disease can be inevitable. Whether from the environment, adverse reactions, or genetic factors, skin disease affects the lives of many. Most often, seeking professional help is the best course of action to prevent and treat skin disease. Specializing in adult and pediatric dermatology care, DCSD delivers the most advanced and comprehensive general dermatology available to treat disorders of the skin.
Advanced dermatology care Skin diseases, unfortunately, can affect anyone at any age. Many individuals who otherwise appear and feel healthy may develop a skin disorder. For anyone, these disorders can result in discomfort, anxiety, pain and even shame. No matter the pervasiveness of the disorder, the DCSD team can help diagnose and recommend treatment. DCSD offers advanced dermatology care for both children and adults. Treatments can range from minimal procedures to dermatological surgery. Considering the sensitive nature of
many skin disorders, the utmost professional care is recommended.
Skin cancer treatment It wasn’t long ago that people only looked at the sun with bright eyes and wide smiles. Having a nice tan was considered a sign of health and sunscreen seemed something reserved just for beach days. Now, we know that the sun can cause wrinkles, pigmentation issues and, of course, skin cancer. Annually, more than 5 million Americans are treated for skin cancer. Prevention, treatment, and aftercare are the key components in dealing with this serious issue. DCSD is the premiere, all-in-one center when it comes to treating skin cancer. Our professional team of board-certified dermatologists, nurse practitioners, and licensed medical aestheticians bring the very best in holistic care. The team at DCSD stays up-to-date on the latest skin cancer treatments, care plans and medical discoveries.
Facial rejuvenation In addition to treating skin disorders and cancer, Dr. Luca and her team specialize in offering a wide variety of cosmetic services to clients. The office encompasses a holistic approach to facial rejuvenation including facials, peels, waxes and laser treatment. More sophisticated procedures offered include Coolsculpting, a revolutionary new way to firm the face and neck, through Ultherapy, and fillers such as Botox® and Juvederm®. These diverse procedures can help most women and men feel younger and more confident in their own skin.
What makes DCSD unique? There are more than 3,000 types of skin disease encompassing all age groups. When seeking treatment for any skin disease, it’s important to understand the root of the problem in order to choose the best treatment plan. Whether hoping for a more youthful appearance or treating a serious disease, understanding all options for treatment
is the best way to achieve successful results in the long-term. The professional team at DCSD treats every new patient as an individual and makes treatment Mary Beth Luca, recommendaD.O., F.A.O.C.D. tions based upon everyone’s own unique circumstances. This personalized approach ensures the most effective results, regardless of the skin disease itself. Kimberly A. Radloff, The profesM.D., F.A.A.D. sional team of three providers offers a warm and inviting feel to the practice. Ranging from specialists of skin cancers to specialists of cosmetic services, the DCSD team provides com- Ying Yang, ANP-C prehensive care to each and every patient. With a range of highend procedures and services, it’s easy to see how the DCSD has developed into a growing practice with an even fastergrowing outstanding reputation. Brain training vs. tutoring Your child is having difficulty with third grade math. You send him to a tutor. The tutor works diligently for several weeks with him on his gradelevel math concepts and assignments. He goes on to pass the third grade with B’s. So far, so good. Summer comes and goes. His fourth grade assignments hit, and once again, basic weaknesses prevent him from learning the new concepts. The processing and visualizing skills he needs just aren’t there. You could pay for another round of tutoring to help with these assignments as well, but the underlying reason he failed to understand them in the first place goes untouched. It will resurface. How do you ‘train’ someone to learn? Current learning science suggests that we look at the process of learning as two distinct parts: specific academic study and a student’s underlying ability to learn. To create the best opportunity for maximum academic progress, the underlying mental skills that lead to easy learning must be as strong and efficient as possible, and this may require specific training. Why? The brain physically changes in response to appropriate training. Its neural pathway efficiency improves in much the same way that muscle cells respond to progressive resistance training by developing added strength. The “untrained” brain that performs slowly and inefficiently can become a fit brain, quick to respond when facing new learning challenges. You can literally train and strengthen your mental skills and have more brainpower!
What is brain training? Brain training (also known as mental or cognitive skills training) is significantly different from tutoring. Both common academic study and special help (such as tutoring) focus on specific academic tasks, simply ignoring the condition of a student’s underlying mental skills. In fact, success in general academics or special tutoring is completely dependent on the student’s underlying ability to learn. For those who struggle or fail, it is not necessarily his or her study habits or missing academic knowledge that is the problem. Underlying cognitive weakness is often the cause of the difficulty. Until the underlying skills are strengthened, providing a strong basic ability to learn, tutoring can only produce temporary progress. Struggles will reemerge at the very next new challenge, and the next, and the next, until the challenges grow too difficult even with tutoring help, and the student simply gets frustrated and gives up. If this is your child, he or she is at risk of being identified as a failure by these repeated struggles. And you risk paying for tutoring each and every year with absolutely no guarantee of future success. The appropriate mental skills training is different. It provides you and your student with the chance to get to the root of the problem and literally rebuild the basic ability to read and learn. A struggling student, or one seeking to optimize academic performance, must consider training the mental skills that are the foundation to learning. Two different needs, two solutions As mentioned above, learning can
be divided into two elements: 1. The specific academic challenge (such as reading) and 2. The underlying skills needed to perform it well (for example, auditory processing and word attack). A tutor can enhance academic success in a given subject if the student has sufficient underlying skills to meet the challenge. If that student struggles due to skill weaknesses, a trainer—not a tutor—is needed. Once you learn to read, you should be able to do it with little thought. But if one of the basic and necessary reading skills (such as sound blending and auditory processing) were missing, you’d have difficulty reading well no matter how much tutoring you got. Further assignments in reading theory or even practice reading wouldn’t overcome the underlying problem. Look for better testing, training options It’s a misconception that the brain is a stationary mass of cells whose skills are permanently fixed.1 Intense training exercises focused on specific areas of weakness can quickly strengthen key mental skills, and literally change the way a student learns. But how do you know if training is what your child needs? When looking for effective help, the right testing is critical. Far too often a student’s individual underlying skills are either not identified or are averaged and reported as an IQ score. Even when classified in terms such as “an auditory learner” or “a visual learner” this imprecise identification limits the help a student can receive. On the other hand, cognitive skills testing is designed to single out key skills that impact learning or reading struggles. It is then possible for a qualified mental skills
trainer to enhance cognitive skills such as auditory and visual processing, logic and reasoning, and working memory. The results are evident almost immediately: better academic performance and an enhanced ability to learn that continues into the future. Tutoring can benefit students in certain situations, but for those with underlying cognitive skill weaknesses, cognitive skills training is the answer. So, when you’re looking to help your child eliminate persistent struggles in school… think brain training first. If you believe there is unrealized learning potential in yourself or someone you love, a simple cognitive skills test could be the key to unlock that potential. At LearningRx, we offer such testing as a wise and affordable first step. Please give us a call today. We can answer your questions, and help test and strengthen skills that can lead to that brighter future. About LearningRx LearningRx brain training specializes in treating the cause—not the symptoms—of learning struggles. The programs’ game-like exercises and oneto-one trainer-to-student ratios provide lasting and dramatic improvement in as little as 12 to 24 weeks. Get your home fallTry Jazzercise’s fun and winter-ready with and effective workouts five simple projects If boots, a warm hat and a tuned-up snow blower are the only items on your winter preparation list, your home maintenance plan may need a makeover. These simple home maintenance projects can help lower your energy bills, prevent more costly repairs and/or increase the lifespan of your home. 1. Heating and ventilation – Examine your fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of your furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality. 2. Seal windows and doors – If not properly sealed, windows and doors can be a major culprit for heat loss. To keep the warm air inside, inspect the weather-stripping around your home’s windows and doors for leaks, rot or decay. Repair or replace structural framing, and caulk inside and out, if necessary. 3. Insulate well – One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into
place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. 4. Backyard care – Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems. 5. Roof and gutters – Inspect your roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from the home to prevent flooding. When it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of your home.

Turner’s ATA Black Belt teaches the practice of self-knowledge to all ages Martial arts focuses on the improvement of mind, body and spirit. Learning a martial art can develop social and interpersonal skills in surprising ways, as well as provide exercise and self-defense Martial arts training and academic training have a common goal. That goal is to create a transformation in attitude and action within a student, leading to a successful, productive member of the community. In school, achievement is rewarded with higher scores or good grades. Training develops those qualities and habits necessary to meet the rigorous challenges of academic life that lead to those good grades. Key among those qualities learned in martial arts training are discipline and self-control, a sense of self-worth and self-esteem, and courtesy and respect for others. Traditional martial arts students develop discipline, respect and courtesy through a curriculum and culture that focuses on fitness, self-defense and self-confidence within the context of home, school and community. Often parents are asked to be involved in
activities, in and out of class, to help reinforce the life skill lessons much further.
Discipline and self control
Discipline and self-control are qualities necessary both in school and in martial arts. In school, a student must learn to pay attention to the teacher and not be distracted in order to learn the day’s lesson. Likewise, focus and concentration is necessary to succeed in martial arts. Students practice shutting out distractions, working under pressure, and concentrating on the immediate activity. The benefits of this martial arts practice and experience carries over into the schoolroom and results in better focus, longer attention spans and students generally see improvements in their grades.
Martial arts will help with real-life situations Picture this. It is late in the night and you are walking back home by yourself. Suddenly, you see someone jumping onto your path from one of the alleys and trying to mug you. Would you feel more prepared to fight off the mugger and satve yourself if Karate is beneficial for health you were trained in and self-confidence, but also martial arts? offers practical benefits such Martial arts was as stress-relief, exercise and supposed to be a self-defense. practical sport that helped keep you fit and ready for real life dangers. But today, it has become more of a sport or a form of exercise than a way of protecting yourself in everyday life, even for young kids. This is happening because of the way these arts are taught today. They are frequently modified to seem more like exercise than what they were really meant for. Can you still use martial arts for kids in real life situations? A good martial arts class should: • Teach you to identify threats. • Read body language and know aggressive posturing. • Train you in getting out of locks and holds. • Help you protect yourself against modern weapons like knives and guns. • Make you be quick on your feet and get out of a sticky situation alive and without fatal damage. If the idea of learning martial arts is knowing how to fight in real world situations, find a class that fulfills these requirements. You might have to try a few classes before you find one that meets your requirements. But, the search and effort will be worth it for practical martial arts skill development. If you are interested in learning more about martial arts, you can follow our blog at ataincolumbus.com.
Self-worth and self-esteem The self-worth and self-esteem developed from accomplishing goals is one of the key benefits martial arts students obtain. In school, this could be completing a book on time or receiving a good grade on a test. In martial arts, this can come from receiving an award, winning a trophy, or moving up in rank and belt color. In some schools, students receive victory stars for outstanding performance in activities or tournament competition, and for doing well in school or at home.
Turner’s ATA Black Belt works hard with students of all ages to give them the tools to lead an empowered life. Martial arts can help people with bullying, fitness, discipline, leadership skills and more.
Reaching goals Martial arts students learn how to achieve big, long-term goals by setting smaller goals and working toward them in succession. This process of mapping a path and hitting benchmarks on the way to long-term ambitions is critical to success—in martial arts, academic, professional and personal achievement.
Courtesy and respect Courtesy and respect for others shows a sense of cooperation, appreciation of others, modesty and community. In school, courtesy and respect can be shown by helping a struggling classmate or by not ridiculing fellow students when they answer questions incorrectly. Martial arts students learn to be considerate, show courtesy and respect to others by bowing to greet, recognizing the achievements of others, being quiet and attentive during lectures, giving sincere effort in workouts, or by simply saying “thank you” at the end of the round or class.
Leadership Martial arts students learn to become good leaders as their training progresses by showing respect to their instructors, by learning to listen, and by being open to learning new things. This not only applies to leadership in the martial arts, but also in the schoolroom and in communities and social circles everywhere.
Peace
Endurance
The aim of any training in martial arts is to achieve inner peace. It mentally and physically empowers you, and helps you as a professional, student, parent or spouse. You can accept the gravest of responsibilities and resolve a number of conflicts by maintaining control. Martial arts for women helps to deal with hectic lives. It becomes easier to stay focused and centered and deal with one issue at a time when multiple issues are besieging you. The connection between your life routine and martial arts can turn out to be extraordinary. The latter will teach you to be calm and centered, enabling you to move confidently and follow your ideas with dedication. Martial arts can help in discovering the truth of your actual accomplishments. Higher martial art experts come in term with their own abilities and skills. It is important to practice martial arts for women constantly so that you are aware of your weaknesses and discover your strengths. The art can also be used as a technique of avoiding the fear of severity of not only death, but also of life. The techniques used in martial arts are designed to put the common good in front of individual achievements.
Exercise is an important part of staying healthy. However, there are different kinds of exercises and doing all of them is the best way to gain maximum benefit. Generally, there are four categories of exercise that a karate school will focus on. These include: strength, balance, flexibility and endurance. Unfortunately, a lot of people, especially men, tend to focus on only strength, balance and flexibility training, while leaving out endurance exercises. Endurance training in karate involves raising the body’s heart and respiration rate. This helps in boosting overall fitness and also improves the health of organs such as the heart and lungs. The general misconception is that, endurance training doesn’t build strength. This is untrue, as there are plenty of endurance training exercises that can also contribute to building strength. Endurance training also reduces chances of lifestyle diseases and makes it easier to carry out day-to-day tasks. Throw a hauntingly good Halloween party Halloween is a special day that delights children of all ages and helps adults feel like kids at heart. Few people want the fun to end once trick-or-treating is over. By throwing a Halloween party, revelers can continue celebrating well into the evening. When hosting a Halloween party, it helps to determine who will be in attendance before making any plans. Parties that include children should be PG in nature, and hosts should find the right balance between scary and fun. While you want to have a certain measure of the macabre, make sure you don’t send young guests home with nightmares. Reserve gruesome decorations and details for adult-only parties. Halloween parties do not necessarily need to be ghoulish to be fun. Try a glittery gala masquerade party or decorate exclusively in orange and black. Classically eerie parties may feature ravens and crows, or they can be subtlely spooky with red candles and heavy curtains. Many people can’t wait to dress up for a Halloween party, even picking out their costumes months in advance. Still, not everyone feels comfortable donning a costume. To welcome all guests, don’t make costumes mandatory. One way around this is to set up a Halloween Disguise Table full of accessories that anyone can borrow and use to alter their appearance. Goofy glasses, strange hats, adhesive mustaches or masks can be fun. If someone didn’t feel comfortable dressing in full costume, he or she may be more apt to pop in a set of plastic fangs or put on a spinning bow tie. Food is an integral part of any party and can enhance Halloween soirées.
Tasty, themed treats are an important part of any Halloween party. Candy is a pivotal component of Halloween and you can play off that theme at your party. Set up a candy bar full of appropriately hued candies of all shapes and sizes. Put them on display in clear glass or plastic canisters so they add to your Halloween décor. Some people like to get creative with Halloween cuisine, crafting foods into
items that may look like parts of the body or other symbols of the holiday. Cookie cutters can turn sandwiches, desserts, biscuits and many other foods into different shapes. However, foods also can be made a tad more spooky simply by renaming them or presenting them in interesting containers. Why not serve punch out of a
fish aquarium? Other beverages can be housed in jugs or old bottles and labeled “potions.” Use laboratory instruments, such as petri dishes, vials and beakers, to serve snacks. A Halloween party makes for a fun night, and there is no limit to what hosts can do when planning their scary soirées.
Have an eek-o-friendly Halloween Halloween has transformed from a spiritual celebration of the harvest and a time to pay respect to departed relatives into a more lighthearted day for kids and adults alike. Billions of dollars are spent every year on everything from Halloween candy to costumes. Halloween may not be the most eco-friendly day of the year, but there are ways to make this beloved holiday a little less taxing on the environment.
Reusable products Investigate the ways items can be put to use year after year rather than having to buy entirely new items each Halloween. It’s estimated that Americans use more than 380 million plastic bags every year, according to About News website’s environmental issues experts. Reusable tote bags have helped cut down plastic bag consumption when shopping at stores, while cloth or canvas bags also can make for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional Halloween totes. Have kids get into the habit of decorating their own canvas Halloween totes with fabric paint and other embellishments. The bag can be packed away with Halloween decorations and used year after year. Another way to reuse this Halloween is to store costumes
and decorations properly so that they will not become damaged. Trends come and go, so a costume that was used a few years ago may be useful again in due time. Take proper care with decorations so that they can be used for years to come.
as this reduces fuel consumption and can help boost the local economy. Many organic and eco-friendly candy options are now available, so shop at organic grocery stores or health food stores to browse their selections.
Cut energy consumption
Walk Halloween night
Halloween is an easy time to reduce energy consumption at home. Fortunately, shadows and darkness fit with the theme of the holiday, so dim the lights or leave them off and use soy candles to create that spooky ambiance. Reduce energy consumption during manufacturing and importing costumes by trying your hand at creative costumes made at home. Many craft items and older clothing can be repurposed into clever costumes for people of all ages. Arrange for a costume swap with other people so that costumes can be rotated and used again.
Stay close to home and do all of your trick-or-treating on foot to reduce fuel consumption. If rural conditions make it difficult to walk the neighborhood, plan a gathering where kids can trick-or-treat in one location, such as in a school parking lot or auditorium. When driving is an absolute must, carpool as much as possible.
Eco-friendly candy Halloween is largely about the treats. The candies and other items handed out at the door also can be customized so that they are more eco-friendly. Choose treats with minimal packaging or packaging that can be recycled. When possible, purchase treats from local stores,
Use safe makeup Face paints and other makeup can transform ordinary people into just about any persona. However, very often makeup can contain lead or other metals, which not only can be harmful to personal health, but also the environment. Be sure to read the ingredients on makeup used and look for safe or even organic products. Halloween is awash in purple, orange and black. But this beloved holiday can be enhanced Reusable tote bags are an eco-friendly way to collect Halwith a little green thinking as loween bounty. well.

The importance of a strong Pre-K experience While many parents are reluctant to see their little ones enter the challenging world of academia, they should consider the advantages of a full-time pre-school program. Village Academy Schools know that now, more than ever, the pre-school experience is the foundation for kindergarten and beyond. According to Tres Marangoni, Dean of Students and Curriculum Development for Village Academy Schools, “Our job is to determine how a child learns, what sparks excitement in that student, and then teach that student with those strengths in mind.” The Pre-K program, based on Mastery through Exploration is the foundation for developing a resourceful, independent, thinker.
Learning through real-life experience, problem solving, selfdirected, creative and innovative projects and problems, allow for the creation of real knowledge. Village Academy Pre-K students learn by doing hands-on experiments, risk-taking, problem solving and cooperative learning. As a result students are better prepared for analytical and critical thinking challenges as they prepare for the next level at Village Academy, which involves Advancement through Mastery in grades K-12. Advancement through Mastery allows students to progress through various subjects by skill level rather than grade level. For information on Village Academy Schools, Pre-K through grade 12, visit the website at villageacademy.org or for a personal tour call (614) 841-0050.

Scott’s Custom Jewelers celebrates 15 years in business with Cans For Carats Give Away! “We believe that when you’ve been blessed, you give back,” explains Scott Cevasco, owner of Scott’s Custom Jewelers, located at 6365 Perimeter Drive in the Avery-Muirfield Plaza. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the company is holding a special community event. Dubbed ‘Cans For Carats’, residents are encouraged to bring in a bag of groceries to donate to the Dublin Food Pantry to Scott’s anytime from Thursday, Oct. 29 until Saturday Oct. 31. In return, they’ll receive a free colored gemstone, valued at $100. “We’ve grown from a “mom & pop” shop in downtown Akron, to a chain of custom jewelry stores in Dublin and Fairlawn,” explained Scott. “And Dublin has welcomed us so warmly. It’s the least we could do.” Food needed during the Cans For Carats drive include peanut butter,
macaroni and cheese, canned tuna, boxed meals such as Hamburger Helper, and even toilet paper. In exchange, residents can chose from gemstones including blue topaz, smoky quartz, amethyst and garnet in a variety of shapes and sizes. “There’s no catch—bring in some food for the Dublin Food Panty, and we’ll give you a gem,” said Scott. The promotion is limited to one gem per family, and on a first come, first choice basis. Scott’s Custom Jewelers specializes in designing jewelry with the customer using computers, a 3D printer and highly skilled craftsman. Customers work directly with Scott, or one of his staff, to come up with their pieces, using gemstones and diamonds from jewelry they don’t wear anymore. The store is also stocked with unique jewelry in all price ranges.

Apples are a popular fruit that are grown in different places around the world. Come autumn, apples can be seen filling farm stands and supermarkets all over North America. Apples are available year-round, but many apple lovers insist there’s nothing better than plucking an apple directly off the tree in the fall. Apple orchards and pick-your-own farms are visited each autumn by apple lovers anxious for apples’ tart and juicy taste. Many people pick more apples than they can eat in a few days, so it pays to learn how to store apples properly so none of them go to waste. Start by picking a variety of apple that won’t go bad too quickly. Apple growers can make suggestions, but Jonathan, Rome, Fuji and Granny Smith varieties tend to last longer than other varieties. Choose apples that are free of blemishes or soft spots. The adage that “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” bears some truth. Apples give off ethylene gas as they decay, and a rotting apple can quickly affect nearby apples. A good place to store apples in the short-term is in the refrigerator where it is cool. Put the apples in the crisper drawer. Do not store them with vegetables, as the apples may cause the veggies to ripen or rot prematurely. If you plan on long-term storage, a few extra steps are necessary. Apples need to be individually wrapped so they will not come in contact with other apples.

Newsprint works great; just be sure to pick the pages that are done in black ink because colored ink may contain heavy metals. Once wrapped, place each apple in a container padded with more newspaper. Store this container in a cool place, such as a garage, root cellar or screened-in porch. Apples can last a couple of months if stored in this manner. Keep apples away from potatoes, as potatoes can cause the fruit to prematurely decay. Another way to store apples is to turn them into preserves or apple sauce. By boiling the apples and sealing them shut in canning jars, that fresh apple taste can be enjoyed long after the apples are picked. Consult with a canning expert about the right way to begin the process. Fruits are generally canned using a boiling-water canner. However, some fruits, like apples, can be canned with a pressure canner. Because apples tend to discolor when the flesh meets the air, use a little lemon juice to prevent this while canning. Turning apples into candied apples also can help them keep longer. Apples can be dipped into a sugary coating, caramel or toffee to be enjoyed later on. Of course, you always can bake apples into a pie as well, then freeze the pie for another day. Autumn would be incomplete without apples. Get ready for apple season by developing a storage plan before you visit the orchard.

Recognizing signs that an older adult needs help at home Don’t wait for a crisis to determine if older adults in your life are safe, happy and healthy at home. Instead, watch for signs that could indicate your loved ones are not doing as well as they want you to believe. The questions below can help you to determine if your loved ones need help at home.
Does your loved one: 1. Walk unsteadily, have unexplained bruises, or is tentative in walking or standing? One-third of older adults fall each year, often starting a downward spiral of hospital stays. In addition, those who fear falling often restrict activities, making them even weaker and more insecure—and more likely to fall. 2. Look thinner than normal? Many older adults have poor nutrition because they don’t plan or fix meals — and because they may not have enough food in the house. 3. Seem quiet or depressed? Feeling sad, regretful or fearful is not normal, even for older adults. Isolation and changes in health can lead to depression, a problem for 25% of older adults. 4. Have difficulty remembering major events? Memory problems can affect every area of an older adult’s life, from medication mistakes to unsafe driving, poor bedtime habits, and lack of personal care.
5. Have a large quantity of medications? Older adults face serious health risks if they don’t take their medication properly. If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should begin planning for the future of your loved one by assessing medical conditions, level of income/assets, and preferences for long-term care. Also think about your own capability for caregiving. How much time, energy and money can you contribute to your loved one’s needs? Whether it is three hours a day or 24, employees of Home Care Assistance make a difference in people’s lives by providing the highest level of service and allowing older adults to live safely and happily at home—where 89% of older adults want to stay. Thank you, central Ohio, for making us the premier provider of home care for older adults. We are honored by the trust so many families place in us!

Enjoy a frugal fall road trip Road trips are a staple of autumn for many motorists. Fall foliage and moderate temperatures make the months of September and October ideal months to hit the open road for weekend getaways. Fall road trips rarely take drivers too far away from home, but traveling can still be costly. Fortunately, there are many ways to make road trips more affordable without sacrificing fun. • Explore alternatives to more traditional lodging. If your road trip includes an overnight stay, consider alternatives to traditional lodging. Hotels might stretch your budget, but depending on where you plan to go, you might have some less traditional alternatives. Airbnb.com allows homeowners and even some apartment dwellers to rent their homes and apartments to travelers, and these listings may pale in comparison to rates offered by nearby hotels. If weather permits, look for local campsites and spend your nights sleeping outdoors under the autumn stars. If you prefer hotels, look for deals on sites like Priceline.com or Hotwire. com, which may offer heavy discounts on rooms. • Take steps to conserve fuel. Lodging might prove your biggest expense on a fall road trip, but fuel likely wonÕt be too far behind. Drivers can cut fuel costs in several ways. Before beginning your trip, take your car in for a tuneup so any issues that might affect fuel efficiency are addressed before you hit the open road. Poorly inflated tires force the engine to work harder and burn
more fuel, so make sure tire pressure matches the levels recommended in your ownerÕs manual before embarking on your trip and even along the way if you feel your car is not running as smoothly as it could be. Another way to conserve fuel is to remove excess items from the trunk. If you donÕt plan to hit the links on your trip, leave your golf clubs at home. • Plot your route. Spontaneity may make fall road trips more fun, but drivers looking to save money should plot their routes in advance so they can avoid potentially costly problems like detours or road work that can waste fuel and lead to hours sitting in traffic. Use a GPS device during your trip so you can be alerted to any unexpected developments that might cost you time and money. • Invite some friends and family along. Inviting friends and family on a weekend getaway can make the trip more fun and more affordable. If you have room in the car, inviting friends along allows you to split fuel costs, and you may even save on lodging if you find a hotel that wonÕt charge for extra guests in the room. Friends and family also can help split the cost of supplies. • Bring your own food. Food is another big expense road trippers must account for. But you can save money on food by bringing your own meals along on the trip. Prepare some sandwiches the morning that you leave and keep them fresh in a cooler so you donÕt have to pay for lunch.

Ohio State Veterinary surgeons making history in Dublin VMC-Dublin offers comprehensive total joint replacement The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center-Dublin’s (VMC-Dublin) board-certified veterinary surgeons, Dr. Laurent Guiot and Dr. Reunan Guillou, have recently performed the first four total elbow replacements (TATE system) in Ohio. The team, which also includes Dr. Loic Dejardin from Michigan State University, has been at the forefront of total elbow replacement in the United States since 2008, combining unique research and clinical experience. Because of this expertise, VMC-Dublin is the only surgical center in Ohio to offer a comprehensive total joint replacement program, including total knee, hip and elbow replacement. The team is also at the leading edge of orthopedic trauma due to their advanced knowledge in minimally invasive fracture repair. This approach reduces surgical pain and promotes faster recovery. As a testimony to their proficiency in joint replacement and
fracture repair, the team has been actively involved in teaching their peers in the United States and abroad on these innovative techniques.
VMC-Dublin also provides 24/7 emergency care
The VMC-Dublin team partners with your family veterinarian to provide a team approach to veterinary care. An appointment is not required with the emergency service. Perfect ingredients make for perfect cakes To find the perfect recipe, you first need the perfect ingredients. And that’s what our founders Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz were for each other. In 1997, they joined forces, or better yet kitchens, to help make cakes to entertain their friends and family. The cakes they made were delicious, unlike anything anyone had tasted. They quickly realized this side project of theirs could be something more. There was a gap in the world for delicious cakes, readily available, that didn’t compromise on their ingredients. Fresh eggs, real butter and real cream cheese; nothing was too good to achieve perfection. And perfection are those decadent, slowly melting bites, we all know and love.
Protect your vehicle from snow, ice and damage from the cold Winter can be an unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. • Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system routinely and clear out any blockages of ice or
debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather. • A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can contribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. • Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. • Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces. • Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. Vehicles can be affected by the cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.

Dyslexia is a condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. According to Understood.org, an online collective of 15 nonprofit organizations that aim to support parents of children with learning and attention issues, researchers have yet to determine what causes dyslexia. However, research has found that genes and brain differences may play a role in a child’s risk factor for dyslexia. A study from the National Center for the Study of Adult Learn-
ing and Literacy found that about 40 percent of siblings of children with dyslexia may have the same issues with reading as their brothers and/or sisters. The anatomy of the brain may also look different in kids with dyslexia than it does in kids who are not dyslexic. Within the brain, the planum temporale helps to understand language. This area is typically larger in the dominant hemisphere of the brain (the left side for right-handed people, the right side for left-handed people).

Where you start the journey makes all the difference For more than 25 years, The Goddard School® has been a trusted name among parents and families. Its classrooms are safe, nurturing environments for children six weeks to six years, offering age-appropriate opportunities to explore and discover. From infants to toddlers, preschoolers to kindergarteners, highly trained teachers lead each child to reach developmental milestones, preparing the children for social and academic success. At The Goddard School, every family enjoys a warm, positive experience. “We strive to provide the best quality program for each child,” says Carrie Park, on-site owner of The Goddard School located in Dublin (Tuttle Crossing), OH. “Our play-based F.L.EX.® Learning Program ensures that we meet high standards specific to early learning, development and care.” The F.L.EX.® Learning Program (Fun Learning Experience) is grounded in research on how children learn best: children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun. It’s designed to help build each child’s emotional, academic, social, creative and physical skills—including 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking (4Cs)—to provide a well-rounded experience and ensure each one becomes confident, joyful and fully prepared in school and in life. “The Goddard School has become the first preschool program to join The Partnership for 21st Century Skills
(P21), a national organization championing 21st century skills,” explains Laura Sabers, onsite owner of The Goddard School located in Dublin, OH. “Children at The Goddard Schools located in Dublin not only learn the 4Cs, but also executive function skills, which include planning, organizing and strategizing.” 21st century skills also tie in directly with STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Introducing STEAM concepts early on helps to promote children’s natural curiosity in STEAM, increasing the chance that children will pursue STEAM-related careers later on in life. “Supporting STEAM learning at the preschool level involves identifying activities children naturally do for opportunities to further guide them,” says Carrie. “At The Goddard School, when children solve puzzles or play with blocks, they essentially create pathways in their brains that help with STEAM learning later on.” Another essential aspect of The Goddard School is the importance of
safety. “Nothing is more crucial than the health and safety of your children,” Laura says. “That’s why, at The Goddard School, we consider their security in all we do. From every detail of our classroom and playground design to our high standards of cleanliness— we’ve tried to think of everything. Our diligent hiring practices ensure that we have the best people in our Schools, and our teachers are thoroughly trained
in safety and wellness principles from day one.” For more information, please visit www.goddardschool.com or call one of the two Goddard Schools located in Dublin, OH. The Goddard School located in Dublin is located at 6239 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, OH, and The Goddard School located in Dublin (Tuttle Crossing) is located at 4980 Parkcenter Avenue, Dublin, OH.
The Goddard School® uses its play-based F.L.EX.® Learning Program (Fun, Learning Experience) to introduce STEAM concepts (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) to help children develop a strong foundation for their future education and a passion for STEAM learning.

Retirement living in Dublin is changing for the better People of all ages prefer having choices for an active lifestyle in a vibrant environment. The Bridge Street District is Dublin’s response to these preferences. This forward-thinking initiative will differentiate 1,100 acres of our community to expand and enhance the unique attributes of such destinations as Historic Dublin, Dublin Plaza and the Shoppes at River Ridge. It will create new housing options such as Greystone Mews. Why should it be any different if you’re retired? Friendship Village of Dublin has begun an expansion initiative of its own. The city’s premier Lifecare community has always offered independent residential living options with healthy lifestyle choices for residents. The community makes it easy for residents to meet new neighbors, share new experiences and enjoy one’s time in productive, meaningful ways. Friendship Village of Dublin has long been known as the best community in the region to combine lifestyle and Lifecare.
What exactly is Lifecare? Lifecare gives you access to a full continuum of long-term care services if you ever need them. The services are discounted from market rates and they are available on the community’s campus. Planning and paying for services in this way keeps monthly expenses more predictable. An entrance fee, which is partially refundable to you or your estate, and a monthly fee are required to secure residency. For many, Lifecare is the smartest, most efficient way to secure the future against the rising cost of long-term care, and to lead a more carefree, fully engaged lifestyle today.
It’s all about to get even better. Friendship Village of Dublin is adding more than 50 new apartment homes, new amenities, new meeting and banquet facilities, improvements to long-term care residences, parking and outdoor gathering spaces. When construction is complete, it will reshape the options for retirement living in Columbus. Consider The Flats at River Point — a completely new concept for senior living in Central Ohio. The Flats are composed of four freestanding buildings for independent living. Each building will have four floors. Three will house just four apartments, one per floor. Every residence will have its own private elevator lobby. High ceilings, windows on all outside walls, paneled doors, crown molding, custom kitchen cabinets, granite countertops, and an open or closed sunroom with French doors all come standard. There are many more options and upgrades available as well. Residents of The Flats will enjoy private parking in their own two-car garage on the building’s ground level. The fourth building within The Flats at River Point will house 16 apartments — four per floor. It will feature two floor plans, one slightly larger than the other. Like the larger Flats, these apartments will deliver a living experience that outshines even the best offerings of other senior living communities.
Friendship Village of Dublin is poised to set an even higher benchmark for excellence. If you’re retiring in Central Ohio, this is the community to see. For more facts on independent living, Lifecare, and the savings and benefits available with early reservation, call Friendship Village of Dublin at 1-866-733-6318.
