How to become a Creativity overflows at library superhero Creative Foundations in both our art studio and new store!

The Delaware County District Library (DCDL) Summer Reading Club kicks off Saturday, May 30 with the theme “Every Hero Has A Story.” The eight-week reading program encourages kids ages 0-18 to read a total of 12 hours before July 25. Here are five easy steps to becoming a Library Superhero.

1. Read all 12 hours Whether reading alone, with a friend, or having a caregiver read to you, it’s to your advantage to read all 12 hours. At six hours, you get a Superhero Utility Belt to store all your superhero needs!

Then at 12 hours, pick out a book to keep, donated by our Friends of the Library.

2. Attend a program every week

Our calendar is packed full of activities for all ages. Daily storytimes occur for ages 0-6; weekly programs are held for kids, tweens, teens and the whole family; and awesome programmers like the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Jim Gill, Zak Morgan, Gator Dave, the Turtle Lady and Ohio Machine Lacrosse will amaze. Plus, each week that you return to the Library, you’ll earn a button to add to your Superhero Utility Belt!

Why is the Council for Older Adults now called SourcePoint?

Last year, the Council for Older Adults and Senior Citizens, Inc. merged, and we are proud to announce a new identity for our combined organization. As of April 27, the Council for Older Adults is now called SourcePoint, and our new motto is “Thrive after 55!� This name change is the result of not only the merger but a great deal of consideration and research. As the head of our organization since 1992, I wanted to share with you my personal perspective on why this change was so necessary.

Our merged organization is not simply the sum of two parts. When we brought together the vital resources that the two organizations offered, we found that we were more than just an in-home care agency and more than just a community center for people over 55. We are now the central source in Delaware County for those who want to live well as they age. The name “SourcePoint� represents our role as our community’s central source and starting point for everything needed to thrive after 55!

While our name has changed, we are not changing the fundamentals of who we are and what we are known for throughout the community. We will continue to provide choices for older

people; to offer the same high-quality coordinated home care services that we always have; to expand supportive services and programs as new needs become apparent; and evolve to meet the changing needs of a rapidly growing population. Wind is one challenge to dining outside, as diners may find themselves chasing paper napkins or airborne plastic cups on windy afternoons or evenings. To safeguard against the wind, rely on reusable, heavy

plastic items that are less likely to blow away in the wind. Also, keep tablecloths in place with a few supplies. Use a grommet-making tool to punch holes into the tablecloth and attach plastic or metal grommets.

Place the tablecloth on the table and slip a thin bungee cord fastener to a grommet on the underside of the table. Stretch the cord across to a grommet on the other side of the tablecloth and secure.

Art for your Ears: New street party set for Saturday Art for Your Ears is a new, exciting street party in downtown Delaware that will take place Saturday, May 16 in the middle of Sandusky Street between William and Spring streets from 1 to 11 p.m. From 1 to 3 p.m. there will be a musical instrument sell and trade event. Along with family-friendly events, small acoustic based ensembles will entertain the crowd. There will be big giveaways throughout the event, including a raffle for a Buell motorcycle and a beautiful guitar that’s

been hand-painted by artist Erica Ott. Amplified music begins at 6 p.m. on the main stage and don’t miss the beer garden. Delyn Christian and the Fret Shop Band will lead off the night. Acts that follow include Hootie McBoob, Erica Blinn and the Handsome Machine and the show will end with Black Leather Touch. Admission to the Art for your Ears event is free.

All proceeds from it will go to benefit the

Women’s City Club of Delaware Foundation, a local charity that provides housing and mentoring services.

“Look for a real person, someone you can connect with,” said Nick Linamen, Area Sales Manager for Home Savings & Loan. “A lot of banks today don’t even offer you a personal meeting, just a phone call or email contact.

Delaware General Health District recommends childhood-safe, cost-effective vaccine schedule The routine childhood immunization program remains one of the most cost-effective and safe prevention programs in public health. An analysis, (applied to children born in 2009) published in the April 2014 Pediatrics journal, showed that routine childhood immunizations in this birth cohort will prevent 42,000 early deaths and 20 million cases of disease, with a net savings of $13.5 billion in direct costs and $68.8 billion in total societal costs, respectively. Every dollar spent ultimately saves at least 10 dollars.

Vaccines are held to the highest standard of safety. The United States currently has the safest, most effective vaccine supply in history. Years of testing are required by law before a vaccine can be licensed. Once in use, vaccines are continually monitored for safety and effectiveness.

Myths and misinformation regarding vaccinations continue to cause concerns for parents. One common myth is “The number of vaccines a baby gets can overload the immune system.” Actually, an infant can easily respond to thousands of antigens at any given time and are exposed to thousands of antigens every day in the environment.

Even though there are more childhood vaccines available today, the actual antigens contained in the full recommended schedule are just 126 compared to more than 3,041 in 1980.

Outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases in unvaccinated and undervaccinated groups are a real cause for concern because it puts everyone at risk. Vaccines are not 100 percent effective, so vaccine-preventable diseases may return if high immunization rates are not maintained. Not vaccinating and having a child get a serious disease is not a risk worth taking.

The best place to get vaccine information is from the child’s healthcare provider or a reputable website such as vaccineinformation.org or vaccine. chop.org. Weeknight activities the whole family can enjoy Many families have their own routines on weeknights. Kids may tackle their homework before dinner, and once everyone’s plate is clean, family members may spend time together or go their separate ways, spending time online with friends or watching their favorite television programs on the couch.

Parents who feel their weeknights don’t include enough family time are often on the hunt for more familyfriendly activities the whole family can enjoy even if everyone has to go to work or school the next day. The following are a handful of family-friendly weeknight activities that can bring families closer together.

• Movie night: Family movie night is a tradition for many families, and parents who want to spend more time together as families may find that movie night is a great way to share a few laughs or even facilitate discussions about important topics broached in certain films. Each week let a different family member pick that week’s movie and ask him or her to explain his or her choice and why they think it’s a film the whole family will enjoy. Let the kids join you as you get the popcorn ready or make special treats to enjoy while the movie is playing.

• Family walk: Walking is a great way for parents to instill a love of physical activity in their children, and nightly walks also make great opportunities for families to leave their devices behind and discuss the goings-on in their lives.

Weather permitting, take a family walk after dinner each night, which can help make your family healthier and strengthen the bonds between family members.

• Writing activities: Another way families can escape their devices and resist the temptation of social media on weeknights is to get together for

weekly writing sessions. Ask each family member to create brief lists on a range of topics, whether it’s a list of favorite books or countries each person wants to visit or a bucket list of things each family member wants to do at one point in their lives. Allow about 15 minutes for each person to write his or her lists, and then discuss each person’s list, including the inspiration behind each item that made it onto the lists.

or games like checkers might not be as popular today as they were prior to the advent of the Internet, but that does not mean a night centered around such games does not still make for a very family-friendly evening. Stock up on some classic board games and share the responsibility of choosing which game to play each week. • Crafts night: Arts and crafts night is another great way for families to spend time together. Parents can choose ageappropriate projects that can help kids and adults alike tap into their creative sides. Solicit ideas when planning crafts night so everyone feels like they played their part.

Nights together as a family do not need to be limited to weekends. Parents willing to get a little creative can enjoy family-friendly evenings no matter what day it happens to be.

How to repurpose items for new and useful purposes The “reduce, reuse and recycle” movement has grown increasingly popular as more men, women and children look to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles. By considerably cutting back on waste, people are doing their part to reduce the size of landfills, safeguard natural habitats and keep neighborhoods and local communities clean.

Municipal public works organizations may have recycling programs in place that make it convenient for residents to recycle items by placing them at the curb for pickup. But prior to putting items out for recycling, people can investigate if it’s possible to reuse an item in a new way. The following are some creative ways to repurpose items around the house.

• Transform shirts into shopping totes. With some modest sewing skills, you can turn an old shirt into a reusable shopping tote. Seal the bottom of the shirt securely. You may want to slip a piece of cardboard in the bottom to make it more durable. Then either sew or tie the sleeves of a shirt to make handles.

• Craft can bird feeders. Cut a sturdy can in half and punch holes into either end. String rope through the holes and tie to create a hanger. Place in a tree branch and watch the birds stop by for a treat.

• Design unique planters. Just about any vessel can be turned into a pot to house a plant. From teapots to cups to mason jars, items can be cleverly trans-
