How to grill the perfect burger Could any food be as simplistic and delicious at the same time as a patty of beef on top of a crusty bun, served with lettuce, tomato and your choice of condiments? Burgers are the go-to item for barbecues, campouts, fast-food meals and late night trips to the
diner. A juicy burger can satisfy so many cravings in one sitting. If ever there was a recipe to master, it would be grilling the perfect burger. Though barbecued burgers may seem easy to make, all too often burgers are botched by a few mistakes. But

don’t worry, burger mastery is within reach if you follow these simple tips. • Begin with fresh meat. Freshly ground meat will produce the best flavor. If you are unsure when the packaged ground beef was made, ask the butcher or someone in the meat department of the supermarket to grind you up a fresh batch. Otherwise, use a food processor or an attachment on a stand mixer to grind the meat yourself. • Fat has flavor. If you’re going to indulge in a burger, make sure it has a fair amount of fat content. Fat helps keep the burgers moist and juicy. Make sure the fat content is about 18 to 20 percent of the mix.

keep the juices inside the meat and prevents your burgers from turning into burnt hockey pucks. • Resist the urge to squash the burgers. Pushing down on the burgers with the spatula will only force the juices out. If you want dry burgers, press them down. If you want nice, juicy burgers, step away from the spatula. • Allow the burgers to rest. Take the burgers off the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes so that all of their juice redistributes through the patty. Toast your hamburger buns and then serve the burgers with your favorite toppings. Dig in and enjoy your efforts, as well as the compliments from other diners. (MNS)

This helps to guarantee flavorful burgers. • Keep the meat cold. Chilled burger patties will firm up and hold their shape better during cooking. Leave the pre-made patties in the refrigerator until the last minute. Keep patties on ice if you will be cooking burgers in batches. • Don’t overhandle the meat. Compressing the meat and handling it too much can lead to dry, dense burgers. Avoid
tough meat by handling it as little as possible. Keep your hands wet while shaping the patties so they’ll come together easily. • Oil up the grill. A clean, well-oiled grill prevents burgers from sticking during cooking. • Make sure the grill is super-hot. The goal is to cook burgers over high heat and fast. This is achieved with a very hot grill. It may only take three to five minutes per side to cook the burgers, depending on the thickness of the patty. • Flip only once. Wait until the burgers have been grilling for a few minutes and release easily from the grill grate. Flip them over and allow them to cook a few minutes more. This helps

Here are a few tips to make the process easier:
• Have a clear idea of what you want painted, what color, and the time frame you want the job to be completed. Visit your local Do It Yourself store to pick up brochures and paint chips to aid in choosing the color scheme. • Usually word of mouth is a better way to research for names of contractors. Make sure the painting contractor is licensed, bonded, and insured. • Get FREE estimates. • Choose a contractor that offers the highest quality at an economically friendly price. • Choose gutters based on a combination of cost and durability. • Large roofs and those with steep

Family restaurant offers delicious specials and happy hour Frank and Donna Colleli started Villa Nova in 1978. Their first two years were spent converting the bar into a restaurant and bar, changing, replacing and fixing up the establishment. Previously, Frank had numerous restaurants and pizza shops around central Ohio, including Frankie’s Pizza and Franco’s. In 1986, they decided to sell Villa Nova and retire to Florida. Frank’s son John had been working in the kitchen at the time of the sale. John continued to work at the Villa under new management and, in 1998, convinced Frank and Donna to come out of retirement to buy back Villa Nova. Donna, John and Frankie continue to make improvements to the kitchen, menu and restaurant. It’s truly “a family restaurant”! We are located between Worthington and Clintonville at 5545 N. Home Savings adds the personal touch to mortgage lending By DEB HERMAN Home Savings Advertising Director Shopping for a home mortgage can be confusing. Most banks have very similar rates and fees, so what should you look for when choosing a mortgage lender? “Look for a real person, someone you can connect with,â€? said Rick Baylor, Area Sales Manager for Home Savings & Loan. “A lot of banks today don’t even offer you a personal meeting, just a phone call or email contact. That’s what makes Home Savings so special,â€? he explained. Home Savings has been in this market for about 10 years with a mortgage office in Worthington, initially working mostly with builders and their clients. “But now we’re growing more into the consumer market, focusing on reaching out to individuals looking for a mortgage that’s not only competitively priced, but also competently managed by an experienced loan officer with a personal touch,â€? said Baylor. The bank’s loan officers will meet with customers at their convenience ‌ evenings, weekends, whenever and wherever is good for the customer. “Like most other banks, Home Savings offers the convenience of applying online, but if you want to meet with a loan officer that option is always open,â€? said Baylor. Of course Home Savings offers loans for purchases and refinances, but the bank does offer a couple of programs that are unique. The bank has a construction/permanent mortgage product that allows for one loan closing; the construction loan converts to a
regular mortgage upon completion of the home. “We have discovered that our program is somewhat unique; not too many banks offer construction/ perm loans now,â€? Baylor explained. “And, qualified applicants can get a really low down payment, lower than most other mortgage loans.â€? Home Savings has a special FirstTime Buyers Program, too. The program offers low down payments (which can be gifted to the borrower), no mortgage insurance costs and no income restrictions. “This program makes it affordable for someone who’s still renting to become a homeowner,â€? said Baylor. As far as offering that personal touch ‌ there are two experienced loan officers serving residents of this area. Todd Primmer and Linda Tempesta can be reached at Home Savings’ Worthington office via phone or email, or through the bank’s web site. Begley Upholstering celebrates more than 45 years of service in Clintonville
Caring and understanding in your time of need Weir-Arend Funeral Home has proudly served the citizens of central Ohio since 1870. Throughout its 144 years of service, the funeral home has always remained a private family-owned firm. The original site of the funeral home was located along Broad Street in downtown Columbus at what is now the intersection of Broad Street and Interstate 71. The building was eventually taken by the state to make way for the construction of the freeway. The current location ever since has been located on North High Street in the beautiful neighborhood of Clintonville. Over the years, Weir-Arend has faithfully served its community 24 hours a day 7 days a week. For many decades in addition to its funeral duties the firm also provided full ambulance service to the Columbus area up until the late 1980s. Weir-Arend staff has always prided themselves in being very active
in their community. They have supported many local schools, churches, and charities. They have been active in the Clintonville Area Chamber of Commerce, Clintonville Resource Center, Kiwanis, American Legion, Civitan, and the Clintonville July 4th Celebration. BEFORE Mary Young is almost speechless as she stands in the showroom of Begley Upholstering to pick up her antique loveseat. “I can’t believe the transformation, it’s simply beautiful! This loveseat belonged to my grandfather and is very special to me and I needed someone special to recover it. I’m so glad I found Begleys”. Since 1968 the Begley family has been hearing such compliments. Robb Begley, second generation explains, “My father would tell me that people will ‘care how much you know once they know how much you care.’ And we try to prove how much we care on every piece we work on. So when I hear compliments like Mrs. Young’s, it means the world to me.” It’s clear that the artisan craftsmanship is what gets Robb excited about his business. He is always willing to walk customers through his workroom and point out the detailed work that is performed at their Clintonville location. Frames glued, springs tied, padding replaced. All neces-

The workmanship, however, is not the entire story. Their showroom and fabric selection is the largest in central Ohio. With over 30,000 fabric samples, dozens of specialty trims, and in-house decorator Anne Nossaman, finding the perfect cover for any project is an almost certainty. With a friendly, knowledgeable staff and ample parking, Begley’s continues to add to their long list of satisfied customers. Begley Upholstering Inc 3293 N. For state-of-the-art dental care, Beechwold Dental Care’s friendly staff offers the full range of services including: preventative care, whitening, veneers, implants, crowns and bridges, dentures, cosmetic dentistry, sleep apnea and TMJ treatments, peridontial disease and regular exams.
Long-term smiles: The often-missed step Back in high school, when I was exploring career options, I spent a lot of time shadowing my local dentist who had been treating my family for close to fiftteen years. He was a great mentor and I learned much seeing how he interacted with, planned with and treated his patients. I was attracted to the dental field seeing how he made those long-term relationships and how he had the opportunity to see entire families grow up along the way. I also remember asking him what his job was, and will always remember his response; “Erik, my duty is to save teeth.” Many people are aware of the importance of preventing and treating cavities to preserve their teeth throughout the life. Most cavities will become painful once they reach a large enough size, and if left untreated can destroy so much of the tooth that it cannot be saved. However, an increasing risk to long-term tooth health is becoming gum and bone disease, also known as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a breakdown of the gum, bone and fibers that hold the teeth in place. The most common is a chronic, subtle and often painless version that may not be detected until significant damage has been done. In some rarer cases, it can also be a very rapid, sometimes painful or painless, version that does damage to the tooth support very quickly. The vast majority of it is caused by bacterial infection of the gums surrounding the teeth. Over time, the constant stress of the infection causes the gums to recede and the bone to breakdown, causing teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. The good news is much of this can
be prevented with routine home care and dental cleanings. In cases where it has started, it can often be halted or reversed if caught early with some additional procedures and home care, allowing people to maintain their teeth throughout their life. Much of it comes down to plaque control. Throughout the day and night clear, thin and sticky plaque will form on your teeth; this is accelerated when eating. This clear plaque is easily removed with good brushing and flossing habits. However, if left on the teeth too long it will start to harden and form calculus, also known as tartar. Once it’s hardened on the teeth it cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone; it needs to be removed with a professional dental cleaning. If not removed routinely it will continue to build up above and below the gums, starting the infection needed for periodontal disease. Oftentimes if cleaned out professionally, and sometimes with the help of antibiotics or mouth rinses as needed, this infection can be eliminated and health of the teeth maintained. At Beechwold Dental Care, our goal is to help you maintain that life-long, healthy smile. Whether it’s a routine checkup, concerns about gum health or cavities, replacements for missing teeth including implants, or improving the appearance of your smile we can help plan and explain several options for you. With our completely digital office and modern chairs we can show you detailed enlarged images and help ensure that you understand and are involved in each step of your plan for your long-term smile. — Dr. Erik Fink
Dr. Erik Fink grew up in North Royalton, Ohio, and earned his professional dentistry degree at The Ohio State University after graduating with honors from John Carroll University. Dr. Fink learned a commitment to others from his father and from his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He served as an assistant Scoutmaster for the BSA, coached a swim team in his hometown, taught children in Red Cross swim lessons, and served as a community service coordinator for several student groups. “I like my patients to not only know about their dental treatment, but why. The patient-doctor relationship is a partnership – both persons need to understand how a problem occurs, the ways of treating it, and most importantly, how to prevent it from reoccurring. My goal is to help you maintain a lifelong healthy smile.”

The Affordable Care Act is here to stay! Now that we are through with the first year of the Open Enrollment through the government and privates exchanges, several things have become clear. First, the revamping of how Americans purchase insurance coverage has changed dramatically and second; you can expect constant tweaks and changes as our federal and state governments, insurers and providers grapple with the increasing demands of an aging population and the increased costs continue to exert financial pressure on individuals and businesses. The law, which passed on March 23, 2010, has good aspects and bad aspects to deal with. Regarding the generally perceived “good” aspects are that all persons wishing to get coverage can do so without sharing medical history (we call this Guarantee Issue) and if they enroll in a new plan, all pre-existing conditions must be covered. In addition, all policies must include full maternity benefits as well as pay all preventative benefits on a first dollar basis, ie. you pay nothing for these covered services. In addition, generally speaking, older and sicker persons can find lower premium policies, although they may have a higher deductible and out
of pocket maximum. Finally, many persons with qualifying income can get advanced premium tax credits to help lower their monthly premium costs. For example, a family four with an income of $90,000 could qualify for as much as $5,000 a year in tax credits to offset their monthly premiums! An individual may qualify for tax credits with income below $45,000. Like all things, there are some not too pleasant aspects to the new marketplace for insurance, including the requirement that most Americans must be covered by a sanctioned plan or face additional income tax penalties. The first year tax for not having insurance is 1% of income, in 2015 it goes to 2%, and then to 2.5% in 2016. Also, young healthy males can see their premium triple in some cases for less valuable plans due to the rating requirements that are a part of the law. Also, the insurers are responding to changes in the law by limiting providers in some cases and offering plans that have higher deductibles and out of pockets. The central Ohio market In 2014, two commercial insurers, Anthem Blue Cross and Medical Mutual of Ohio wrote plans through the government exchange,
next year.
healthcare.gov. In 2015, we can expect as many as 5 insurers offering coverage in central Ohio, including Anthem, Medical Mutual, United HealthOne, Aetna and a new insurer, InHealth. This will give consumers more options to choose from! It appears at this point that Anthem Blue Cross is the only plan offering a restricted network of providers, although the plans and rates will not be released until the fall. The key shopping concerns will be: 1) are your desired providers accepting the insurance you are considering, 2) how do they cover your
medications and then how much is the premium and what are my co-payments and out of pocket limits. Special Enrollment Periods SEP’s as they are coming to be called are ACA legislated requirements for the opportunity to purchase coverage throughout the year. These include the following reasons: involuntary loss of group coverage, COBRA coverage expiring, significant reduction in income, birth, death, divorce, marriage and certain qualified hardships. Individuals who did not purchase coverage during open enrollment cannot qualify for an ACA plan until
Open Enrollment for 2015 The upcoming open enrollment for 2015 is shaping up to be a time a great activity and potential confusion and frustration. The open enrollment period runs from November 15th 2014 to January 31st,2015. With millions of people attempting to secure individual, group and Medicare coverage at the same time, you can expect all kinds of issues and delays as insurers try to determine what resources are needed to do the job and the government attempts to make their technology and administration function properly.
