I love being part of this special family.” - Hannah Dolen, age 15 “We feel so fortunate to have discovered CDT for our daughter seven years ago. Protect the environment with safe boating Recreational boating reaches its peak when the weather warms up and people take to waterways in droves. Spending a day on the water enjoying the scenery or trying your luck at fishing are popular pastimes. Following proper boating practices and etiquette can protect everyone onboard. Although ensuring passenger safety should be a priority, safeguarding against environmental impacts while boating also should be a concern. Marinas and various marine areas can become contaminated with pollutants generated from boating activities. Boat cleaning, fueling and marine head discharge are just a few of the pollutants that can find their ways into the water. A past study in the marine reserve of Cape Creus in the Mediterranean Sea found that boat anchoring also is a considerable threat to marine habitats, as vulnerable ecologies can be damaged by anchors. Although there are regulations in place to protect marine life and ecosystems, these rules aren’t always adhered to. Recreational boaters can do their part to keep oceans, bays, rivers, and lakes pristine by adhering to some sound advice. • Reduce engine exhaust. Whenever possible, row, paddle or use sails to decrease engine use and subsequent exhaust. When engines must be used, do not idle unnecessarily. Always steer clear of the aft of the boat, where fuel fumes and carbon monoxide can cause

serious health implications. • Keep trash on the vessel. Do not discard any items over the side of the boat. Even seemingly harmless items can impact the environment. Store garbage in a bag and dispose of it properly when you return to the marina or dock. Secure items onboard so they will not blow off and end up in the water. • Avoid antifouling paints. Antifouling paints are special paints applied to the underside of vessels to prevent or slow down the growth of barnacles and other organisms. Maritime New Zealand notes that these paints can harm other sea life and prove dangerous when scraped off and not discarded properly. • Keep boats in proper working order. Poorly maintained boats may harm the environment. Inefficiently working engines can produce more exhaust and contaminate the air and water. Oil and other mechanical fluids can leak into the water and affect the marine environment. Proper maintenance helps keep boats safe and minimizes their impact on the environment. • Respect marine ecosystems. Boaters who plan to enter the water and explore should tread delicately. Coastal areas often play home to birds and other wildlife. Use caution around reefs and habitats. Safe boating involves following the rules of the water and also keeping marine environments clean and protected.

Mike Carruthers: Lifelong resident and realtor is a supporter of the Bexley community Mike Carruthers, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker King Thompson, has helped people buy and sell homes for the past 28 years in Bexley and the surrounding areas. Mike holds a special place in his heart for the Bexley schools and community. As a lifelong Bexley resident, Mike is a generous supporter of several local organizations including the Bexley Education Foundation, Bexley Community Foundation, the Bexley House & Garden Tour, Rally for the Cure, Coldwell Banker King Thompson Foundation and more! Mike knows all about and has a long history with Bexley real estate, like his father before him. Mike won’t tell you this, but he probably works harder than anyone in the business. He’s passionate about what he does every day for his clients, and they appreciate him from start to finish. For staying power and growth in today’s real estate industry, Mike focuses on staying on the pulse of the market, understanding clients’ wants and needs, expertly marketing their homes, and being an excellent communicator, problem solver and negotiator. He enjoys working with first-time homebuyers, those downsizing or those moving to a larger home. As a member of the Columbus Luxury Real Estate Group, Mike has the expertise, knowledge and reputation for helping clients buy and sell the finest homes in Bexley and beyond. Consistently recognized as the top agent in the local office and the #1 agent within Coldwell

Banker King Thompson throughout Columbus, Mike closed $32.5 million in real estate transactions in 2014. We asked Mike a few questions: Why did you get into this profession? My father was in the business. I was the head pro and manager of a tennis club and knew it would be difficult being on the court 50 hours per week later in life. I made a good living in tennis and the first few years in real estate with very little income was extremely stressful, making me question my decision. Needless to say, I think I made the right choice as I had 74 closings last year. Still stressful, but good stress. I only have to think back to when the phone was never ringing to remind myself being busy is a very good problem. What’s the most exciting thing happening today in real estate? Low interest rates and a stronger Columbus economy. What’s the biggest worry? Lower inventory: 2,200 fewer homes on the market vs. last year. What’s one thing you would change about the real estate industry in the U.S.? Perception. Most consumers think our business is fairly simple, which could not be further from the truth. Today’s real estate agent has to have so much knowledge and be very skilled at marketing, negotiating and problem solving. It is extremely tough and challenging, but ultimately a rewarding business.

Recognizing signs that an older adult needs help at home Don’t wait for a crisis to determine if older adults in your life are safe, happy and healthy at home. Instead, watch for signs that could indicate your loved ones are not doing as well as they want you to believe. The questions below can help you to determine if your loved ones need help at home.

Does your loved one: 1. Walk unsteadily, have unexplained bruises, or is tentative in walking or standing? One-third of older adults fall each year, often starting a downward spiral of hospital stays. In addition, those who fear falling often restrict activities, making them even weaker and more insecure — and more likely to fall. 2. Look thinner than normal? Many older adults have poor nutrition because they don’t plan or fix meals — and because they may not have enough food in the house. 3. Seem quiet or depressed? Feeling sad, regretful or fearful is not normal, even for older adults. Isolation and changes in health can lead to depression, a problem for 25% of older adults. 4. Have difficulty remembering major events? Memory problems can affect every area of an older adult’s life, from medication mistakes to unsafe driving, poor bedtime habits, and lack of personal care.

5. Have a large quantity of medications? Older adults face serious health risks if they don’t take their medication properly. If you answered “yes to any of these questions, you should begin planning for the future of your loved one by assessing medical conditions, level of income/assets, and preferences for long-term care. Also think about your own capability for caregiving. How much time, energy and money can you contribute to your loved one’s needs? Whether it is 3 hours a day or 24, employees of Home Care Assistance make a difference in people’s lives by providing the highest level of service and allowing older adults to live safely and happily at home — where 89% of older adults want to stay. Thank you, central Ohio, for making us the premier provider of home care for older adults. We are honored by the trust so many families place in us!

HOME CARE ASSISTANCE Changing the Way the World Ages 2120 Tremont Center Upper Arlington, OH 43221 (614) 481-8888 homecareassistancecolumbus.com

Jean Kramer, Wexner Heritage Village Executive Director of Independent & Assisted Living, recently toured the space being renovated to make way for eight new rooms at The Cottage, WHV’s memory care assisted living community. The new rooms will be ready for occupancy before the end of August.

WHV adding more memory care assisted living at The Cottage The Cottage, Wexner Heritage Village’s memory care assisted living community, is growing to nearly double its original size, with new suites available for occupancy in late summer. Wexner Heritage Village is central Ohio’s most comprehensive network of senior healthcare and housing services. Unused space on WHV’s Bexley-area campus is being renovated for eight new suites. These suites, and additional common areas, will be finished before the end of August and bring the total to 18 private rooms, each with its own bathroom. The Cottage opened in 2011 and was fully occupied, with a waiting list, within months. And the number of people hoping to place a loved one at The Cottage continues to grow. “We knew this type and quality of care was lacking in our community, said Jean Kramer, Executive Director of Independent and Assisted Living. “But the persistence of a waiting list and the calls we receive every week from worried families has really driven home

the immediacy of the need. Kramer said memory care assisted living provides a better quality of life and is more cost effective than traditional nursing home care. And, she said, quality of life is a priority for aging baby boomers. “It really feels like family at The Cottage, Kramer said. “It’s intimate and warm and our associates are genuinely respectful and interested in honoring what makes each of our residents a unique individual – their interests, preferences, experiences and history. Expansion of The Cottage is supported by a generous grant from the Community Grants and the Frank Forchheimer, Moritz Mayer and Robert A. Glick Funds of the Columbus Jewish Foundation. The Foundation also supported the initial development of The Cottage. For more information about The Cottage, call the leasing office at (614)384-2271 or visit us online at whv.org. Enjoy your favorite fair foods this summer State and county fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun. If it can be served on a stick or deep fried, chances are you can find it at a fair. Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals. • Funnel cake: Funnel cake and it’s close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others. • Corn dogs: Corn dogs

are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds. • French fries: French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks. • Cotton candy: What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor? Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquified enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that is loved by kids and adults alike. • Pie: Fair-goers are likely to

happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts. • Corn on the cob: Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Corn on the cob is most popular in corn-producing areas and can be the ideal complement to burgers and other fair foods. • Anything on a stick: Each year fair vendors experiment with culinary oddities that can be served on a stick. One day it may be skewered pork chops and the next a sleeve of cookies. Those who want the full fair experience should consider trying something served on a stick.

We invite you… to relax We frequently use the term burnout when describing the way we feel. Day by day, we put our mind and body under more stress than ever. Multi-tasking has become the new norm and now, even multi-tasking is much more intense! Our fast-paced lifestyle, poor diet, lack of exercise and high stress levels can lead to a build up of toxins in the muscles. Our bodies cannot release the toxins as a result, build up occurs. The toxins become stagnant in the muscles, which will begin to harden, decreasing flexibility, leading to everyday aches and pains, insomnia and stress. Massage is a wonderful healing tool which uses manipulation of soft tissues, such as muscle and fascia which can help alleviate many of these symptoms. The toxins are gently released into the bloodstream, delivered to the organs of elimination where they are removed from the body. When we’re free of pain, we’re more likely to engage in a healthier lifestyle! Touch Therapy, LLC offers the most therapeutic environments for the ultimate relaxation! Zen Cha Café & Tea was established in 2002 as the first premier tea service in central Ohio. We are committed to the mission of promoting appreciation and sharing of cultural commonality through tea. It is with this mission we believe that a true tea enjoyment should be (and has been) a harmonious lifestyle that creates a common bonding and understanding of ethnic and cultural diversity. dishes in house by hand, using only the highest quality ingredients. Our dishes have been carefully created to pair to a specific region of teas, or infused with tea ingredients. The flavor of our culinary presentations are inspired by the cuisines of major tea countries including China, Japan, South East Asia, India, Britain and the United States. Our talented Tea Ambassadors will help match your tastes in tea with a dish that will best compliment your palate. Whether you want hand rolled Vegetable Dumplings or freshly made Onigiri for a taste of the Far East, something as American as Apple Pie, or maybe something in between, Zen Cha can complete your tea exploration experience!
