Affordable Care Act drives benefits and technology integration, new plan options By Tom Paplaczyk Co-founder/Partner Strategic Business Services Agency The Affordable Care Act (ACA) became law on March 23, 2010. As we approach the 6th anniversary of the passing of this law, we continue to discover and deal with its far reaching influence on your business or organization, not to mention individuals who purchase their own insurance. The Affordable Care Act, like most laws that are passed, has some positive elements and arguably negative aspects as well. On a positive note, individuals who in the past were unable to find insurance to cover a serious health condition can not only get coverage, but assuming they act(ed) within the timeframes, can also received immediate coverage for those pre-existing conditions. Many not only received this coverage, they also received financial assistance to help pay their premium and in some cases reduced their out of pocket expenses, all based on Federal Poverty Level Household Income levels. This positive impact has been offset by increasing deductibles and premiums for those who were insured and are reasonably

than ACA plans, at a lower cost, with integrated wellness and other incentives for employees. They use the same type of funding and benefit strategy large companies use, simply put, a selffunded or level-funded plan. These plans have the following features: guaranteed fixed premiums, even if group has excessive claims; opportunity for premium refund if claims are below target; embedded telemedicine and wellness programs; claim reports to see how the plan is being used. The biggest advantage of these plans is that the plan design pricing can be significantly lower because the plans take into account the demographics and health of the group. The Central Ohio Chamber of Commerce is offering, through the local Worthington Chamber and other chambers in central Ohio, a hybrid plan that allows healthy groups to obtain better rates than the ACA rates, in a shared pool of risk, call a MEWA. The Southern Ohio Chamber Alliance (SOCA) developed this plan over the past few years and it will be available to new chamber clients starting in May of this year. This product will be available to groups with as few as two employees, and is going to provide an additional option for small businesses to provide

valuable healthcare benefits to their employees. Finally, the reporting and compliance requirements of the law are driving an integration of payroll, time and attendance and benefit administration onto single platforms so employers can improve benefit communication to employees, administer the benefits efficiently, track part-time employees’ hours to calculate eligibility of employees for benefits (50 or more employees), and then provide reports the IRS requires concerning the offer and acceptance of coverage by employees. Benefit consultants are scrambling to partner up with payroll providers to offer these services. Our agency, as an example, has offered payroll services for our clients for more than 10 years. In the past year, our product has developed to the point where it incorporates all of the functions on a seamless platform and competes exceptionally well with traditional payroll only providers. The changing world of healthcare, benefits, human capital management are challenging to most businesses and organizations. Developing a partnership with a consultant or trusted advisor who is up-to-date on the laws and changes to them is instrumental to the success of any business.

Voted central Ohio’s #1 jewelry store In the 2014 Reader’s Choice Awards, ThisWeek readers voted Worthington Jewelers central Ohio’s favorite jewelry store. “We believe the award reflects our focus on style, value, selection and customer service,” said owner Bob Capace. When Capace founded Worthington Jewelers in 2000, his goal was to create a store where locals would feel at home and receive outstanding value. “Whether you come in for a $5 watch battery or $5,000 engagement ring, I want you to feel like an honored guest,” he said. Located at 692 High Street on Worthington’s historic Village Green, the store has become a focal point for downtown Worthington. In 2011, a Craftsman-style addition to the original brick building nearly tripled jewelry display space. Although he initially opened Worthington Jewelers with a partner, Bob and his wife Theresa Capace became sole owners in 2013. “With my wife as store manager and our son and niece working here, it’s truly a family business,” he said. “We also have an incredible staff of friendly, non-commissioned jewelry consultants and goldsmiths. Their dedication to customer delight is a big part of our success.” As a full-service jeweler, the store’s offerings range from jewelry sales to design and repair to appraisals. The store specializes in custom, one-of-a-kind pieces, but that doesn’t mean prices are expensive. “Our focus is on delivering more bang for your buck,” Theresa Capace said. “Our custom designs often cost much less than a comparable designer piece. Plus, they’re made right here in Worthington, and we guarantee the workmanship for life.”

Our focus is on delivering more bang for your buck. Our custom designs often cost much less than a comparable designer piece. Plus, they’re made right here in Worthington, and we guarantee the workmanship for life.” — THERESA CAPACE Co-Owner of Worthington Jewelers

With more than 1,300 designs on display, Worthington Jewelers also has central Ohio’s largest selection of engagement and wedding rings. A

wide selection of diamond and coloredgemstone fashion jewelry, plus popular estate jewelry cases, round out its in-store inventory.

Bob Capace noted that a lot of jewelry stores are intimidating, with armed guards and locked doors. “We want to be the opposite of that. When you come in, we try to set you at ease, even make you laugh. You can stop by with kids and dogs in tow or wearing jeans or sweats. We’re just glad you came.” The store’s non-commissioned jewelry consultants work as a team. “We never want anyone to feel pressured,” Bob Capace said. “Our goal is to teach you enough about diamonds and jewelry so you feel comfortable with your decision.” The company also buys diamonds and old, unwanted gold and silver jewelry, sterling flatware, coins and select high-end watches. “As part of our green initiatives, we refurbish jewelry for resale or use the gold and gemstones in new creations,” Bob Capace said. The store offers a 50 percent extra trade-in allowance for those who choose to exchange old jewelry for new. Community involvement is a high priority for the Capaces. They provide annual support for Worthington Schools and are active in the Worthington Chamber of Commerce and Olde Worthington Business Association. Numerous other local organizations such as the McConnell Arts Center and Worthington A.M. Rotary also benefit from their donations. Ultimately, the Capaces strive to be a local resource. “We hope that eventually everyone in Worthington will stop by and get to know us,” Theresa Capace said. “Even if you just need a complimentary jewelry cleaning, we’re happy to be of service.”

Dr. Fink learned a commitment to others from his father and from his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. “I like my patients to not only know about their dental treatment, but why. The patient-doctor relationship is a partnership—both persons need to understand how a problem occurs, the ways of treating it, and most importantly, how to prevent it from reoccurring. My goal is to help you maintain a lifelong healthy smile.” Niederhelman and Lewis also have offices in Cincinnati, Newark, and Whitehall, so they know how to grow and manage a business—primarily through hard work, genuine care, and an effort to make sure every patient knows how important they are. The Columbus Craftacular Showcase, presented by Columbus Craftacular, is one of the longest-running craft shows in the city. This 8th annual celebration of all things handmade and the community that allows the makers to thrive, will take place on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Whetstone Community Center in Clintonville, a neighborhood in north Columbus. In 2009, Columbus Handmade (formerly Etsy Team Columbus) members Kellie Gedert and Heather Wirth established the Columbus Craftacular to bring together the city’s burgeoning community of indie crafters—many with shops on Etsy’s global online marketplace—so they could sell their wares in their hometown. With the help of a group of loyal volunteers and many local business sponsors, the Craftacular was born, featuring earth-conscious products, live music, indoor and outdoor booths for shopping, give-away swag bags with items

donated by artists and raffles to raise money for local animal charities. This year’s Columbus Craftacular Showcase will be all indoors at Whetstone, with a more sophisticated vibe. The ecofriendly vibe of the original show will remain, but artists are no longer required to feature mostly recycled/sustainable work, bringing new talent this year. As the show has become more competitive, the Craftacular’s jurors will focus on higher quality wares and art. The show will feature pre-recorded local music and activities outdoors including DIY presentations and make-and-take stations, as well as a few popular food trucks and a picnic area. The Columbus Craftacular team hopes to continue bringing the community together with this big, fun, annual celebration to benefit families, artists, musicians, local businesses—and animals, too! For more information, go to www.columbuscraftacular.com. We hope to see you there!

Begley Upholstering and North High Furnishings: A match made in heaven Nestled in the heart of Clintonville, Begley Upholstering has been and remains one of the most trusted family-run upholstery companies in central Ohio. William and Nancy Begley started their upholstering company in 1968. Their passion and devoted work ethic for upholstery has been passed on to the many upholstery artisans that work at Begley. The choices of fabric, vinyl or leather you will be presented with, will be simplified by the help from our friendly staff up front. Three years ago, Begley was acquired by Fortner Inc., another highly-trusted upholstery business here in Columbus. “We see huge value and opportunity in the Begley team’s workmanship and attention to detail” says

Justin McAllister, president of Fortner Inc. “We want to help Begley appeal to a new generation of clientele while upholding the core values and quality service customers have grown to expect from them for the past 47 years.” Combined minds had a vision to extend the Begley brand beyond upholstery, by offering quality furnishings. For almost a year now, North High Furnishings has been open and thriving. They offer sofas, chairs and more! Items can be purchased off the floor or custom tailored from a variety of finishes and fabric options by our in-house experts. We also support local brands that represent Ohio and Columbus. We feature local artists’ furniture, photography and many other items.
