Hilltop Bean Dinner set for June 25 The Historical Hilltop Bean Dinner Festival is being held Saturday, June 25 from 10 to 5 p.m. in Westgate Park, 455 S. Westgate Ave. While we do feature beans—we also have several other food options from food various vendors! We also have a variety of kids programs, arts and crafts, an antique car show, and music from Award Winning Blues Band MoJo Theory!  The bean dinner is an 80-yearold tradition being held every June in Columbus’ Westgate Park. During the Civil

War—the area now known as Westgate Park was a Civil War prison camp called “Camp Chase�. While Westgate is now a gorgeous neighborhood – it used to be a very feared place by the Confederate soldiers. The soldiers were fed a ration of beans twice a day. While we remember the nation divided during the Civil War—the Hilltop bean dinner unites people from all around Columbus in this one-day family festival!

Prairie Township Community Center: A little bit of everything Serving 17,000 residents and one of the most diverse areas in Ohio, the new Prairie Township Community Center has a bit of everything. The West side of Franklin County has one of the largest Somali, Ukrainian and Latin immigrant populations in Ohio. With areas of hard urban to suburban neighborhoods to rural farms, the Township is located in a large recreational service gap on the western edge of Franklin County between Grove City and Hilliard. There are few parks and no community centers or YMCA’s in the area. The Township never had a recreation department with just six small neighborhood parks, non-of-which are large enough to hold a full size soccer field. Prairie Township was looking for an avenue to offer recreational services to an underserved part of Franklin County. In 2011 the Township residents voted to form a Joint Economic Development Zone (JEDZ) with Obeitz. This allowed the Township to begin collecting income taxes from its

largest business district.

With this influx of revenue the Township purchased 110 acres of land with the plan of creating a new park containing six baseball fields, eight multipurpose fields, a dog park and passive green space. In addition to the park, the Township was able to move forward with purchasing land for a Community Center not only for township residents but all the surrounding area residents.

In June of 2015 the Prairie Township Community Center opened. A 38,000 sq. ft. community center complete with an indoor pool, walking track, full size

gymnasium, fitness area, and outdoor splash pad. The Township had a goal of reaching 3,000 membership in the first year. The PTCC has already surpassed 5,500 memberships in just the first eleven months.

The last eleven months have filled with events and activities the area has never experienced.

The Township started a Farmer’s Market, Community Tree Lighting Event, letters to Santa, a Summer Day Camp, partnered with dozens of local businesses to host a Pumpkin Swim/Halloween event, Elf On The Shelf scavenger hunt, 5K Walk and Father/Daughter Date Night.

Center has organized a unique Summer Day Camp program that is a “pay as you use” fee structure for children 6-12 years of age. The flexible system is great to accommodate your busy summer schedule, while providing children with a fun and exciting summer program.

It has been amazing to watch the area begin to build new relationships with their neighbors and learn what it truly means to have a community center. Area residents are excited to take part in many of the new programs and offerings. The Township is excited about the growth we have seen already and have we have begun to look to the future with possible partnerships with other municipalities and expansions to our programming and our building.

WABA is the champion of the greater Westland area The Westland Area Business Association (WABA) has been a champion of the greater Westland area for 26 years. WABA brings businesses, non-profits, churches and community members together to support local businesses and promote commitment within the community.

Meteorologists rely on electronic equipment and their knowledge of weather patterns to provide forecasts each and every day. But weather can be unpredictable, and even the most reliable weather prognosticator can sometimes get it wrong.

Novices can try their hands at predicting the weather by interpreting the environmental signs around them.

Earth science is a part of many elementary school curriculums. Current students and adults can use what they learn or learned about cloud types and formations to determine if rain is coming or if they can leave their umbrellas at home. Clouds can say a lot about both the current weather and what’s to come.

According to Weather Wiz Kids, clouds are formed from very tiny droplets of water or ice crystals. Because the droplets are so small and light, they can float in the air.

The characteristics and look of clouds are dictated by temperature, height, wind, and the amount of water vapor in the air, as well as the influence of other air masses.

Clouds can say a lot about the weather, and weather prognosticators have relied on clouds for centuries to help make their predictions. Understanding clouds and what makes each cloud type unique can help amateur meteorologists impress their friends and avoid being caught in inclement weather.

• Altocumulus: These are mid-level clouds that look like a layer of white and gray cotton. The presence of these clouds may indicate rain is on the way.

• Cumulus clouds: These clouds can look like cauliflower in shape. While they’re usually seen in fair weather, they can produce short spurts of rain.

• Cirrus: Cirrus clouds are high, wispy and feathery and found above 20,000 feet.

Cirrus clouds can indicate that a storm system is approaching within a day or so. This may be especially true if cirrus clouds are showing tails. According to The Homeschool Scientist, seeing a few cirrus clouds in the sky means that fair weather is on the way. If they grow in number and almost cover the sky, look for rain within 24 hours.

• Cumulonimbus: These towering clouds are good harbingers of rainy weather.

They tend to form when thunderstorms are imminent. They also may accompany strong storms that produce hail, wind and even tornadoes.

• Stratus: Low-lying, flat and gray, stratus clouds are usually seen during rain, snow or misty conditions.

Cloud watching can be an interesting hobby and a great way to grow acquainted with the workings of weather systems.

Children can take chances predicting the weather based on cloud formations to see if their predictions come true.

A report published in the Lancet in 2012 suggests that a lack of exercise now causes as many deaths across the globe as smoking. A team of 33 researchers representing centers around the world contributed to the study. It was determined that about one-third of all adults are not getting enough physical activity to keep them healthy and to prevent the nearly 5.3 million deaths per year that can be linked to sedentary lifestyles. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. It’s also beneficial to do a combination of activities for exercise variety.

How to repot a plant Gardening time is here, with people enjoying plants both inside and outside of their homes.

Container gardening, which is a planting method in which flowers and other plants are grown in pots and other containers, is quite popular because of design versatility. Containers can be moved from location to location if plants are not thriving in a particular spot. They also make gardening possible when there isn’t any available land space, which might be the case for apartmentdwellers.

Flower pots enable plant enthusiasts to enjoy foliage inside of the home as well. Houseplants can add beauty to interior spaces and help filter indoor air. In the late 1980s, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America actually studied houseplants as a way to purify the air in space facilities. They found several plants are particularly good at filtering out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Having plants around can create inviting spaces and improve healthy conditions inside and out.

Part of caring for plants in containers involves knowing when a potted plant might need a little tender loving care. As plants grow larger, they may outgrow their containers and require more roomy quarters. Without ample space, plants may not be able to adequately draw up water and nutrients to support top growth. Repotting may seem like it is easy, but it actually takes a little finesse so not to damage the plants.

Gardening experts like those from Fine Gardening, HGTV and Today’s Homeowner suggest these repotting tips.

• Be sure the plant is well watered for a few days prior to the repotting process. Watering also will help loosen the root ball from inside of the smaller pot.

• A plant ready for repotting should slide out with most of the soil in one piece. If the soil is free-falling, it may not need to be repotted at this point because there’s still room for the roots to expand. Other signs that plants may need repotting include roots poking out of the soil or plants that are straggly and pale.

• Consider repotting outside because the process can be messy. Have all of your materials, which include a trowel, gloves, scissors, and potting soil, handy so that you can tackle the process smoothly.

• Remove your plant from the pot carefully. Place the plant on its side, then support the main stem in one hand and use the other hand to gently pull the pot away. Be careful not to pull on the main stem or break the stem. Tread gently.

• Cut away any rotten or dead roots, and trim really long ends. Make three or four vertical cuts about a third of the way up the remaining root ball. This also will help with water and nutrient absorption once the plant is in its new pot.

• Gently untangle any remaining roots and prepare to place the plant in a new pot.

• Choose a new pot that is slightly larger than the root ball. Fill the pot with soil so that the root ball sits about an inch below the rim of the pot. Add more soil around the roots to fill the pot. Be sure to leave enough room so that with each watering the pot can hold water.

• Thoroughly water the plant after repotting to moisten the soil.

Watch your plant afterwards to be sure that it’s taking to its new potted home. It can take around three to four weeks for the plant to recover from repotting. Water regularly, avoid fertilizing and keep the plant out of direct sunlight.

How to choose the right backpack Upon hearing the word “backpack,” people naturally think of back-to-school season, when throngs of children board buses and head to classrooms across the country. However, the backpack need not be pigeonholed into such a narrow stereotype; there are many different uses for backpacks.

Outdoor enthusiasts, particularly hikers and daytrippers, rely extensively on backpacks. Backpacks facilitate the transporting of supplies and other necessities, but not every backpack is the same, and some are more applicable to certain tasks than others. Choosing a backpack requires careful consideration, and the following tips can help consumers make the best choice.

• Identify its potential usage. What will the backpack need to do? Will you be hiking the mountains and looking for a lightweight pack to carry small supplies, or are you planning to camp out and need something capable of carrying larger items? Discuss your needs with a store employee when shopping for packs.

• Choose the right volume. Backpacks are sold by volume, or how much stuff they can carry. This is measured in liters or square inches. The liter size may be included right in the product name.

According to Eastern Mountain Sports, between 15 and 30 liters is good for day hikes or school usage. An overnight or weekend trip likely will have to be between 30 and 55 liters in volume.

• Determine torso size. Whichever backpack you choose, it needs to fit you comfortably. That means measuring your torso length to find one that will sit on the right area of your back. The torso length on the pack will equate to the distance between the shoulder straps and where the pack hits your hips. For packs with hip straps, the right length will ensure the

hip straps can fit comfortably in this area.

Some packs are sold with an adjustable torso size. Some manufacturers also size packs specifically for women’s frames.

• Decide if framing is necessary. After you have decided on size, you need to assess other features, including internal and external frames. External frames are original style, classic packs. Internal frame packs tend to be lighter and have a lower profile. If you need to maneuver through some tight areas, an internal frame pack might be best. Frames in packs help you carry more, and you can even strap things to the outside of the pack, says Backcountry, a gear and outdoors resource.

• Consider additional features. Packs come with various features, including loadlifter straps and sternum straps, that can help balance the load and put less strain on your back. 1. Visit area museums. It’s probably been a while since you’ve looked at the sights in your hometown, and rainy summer days provide the perfect opportunity to take them in from a tourist’s perspective. If you are away from home when the rain starts to fall, inquire about any unique indoor activities the area has to offer. Hotel lobbies and concierge offices typically have lots of brochures advertising nearby activities.

2. Do a scavenger hunt. Make up clues and hide a prize to be discovered at the end of the hunt. Scavenger hunts can keep children or adults occupied until the rains subside.

3. Have an indoor campout. If weather cancels your plans to camp out under the stars, pitch your tent indoors and camp under the ceiling. Tell scary stories and tinker with s’mores recipes to make your indoor camping seem more like the real thing.

4. Stock up on board games. Board games are the original boredom-busters. They’re portable, and they can quickly turn a rainy day into something much more tolerable. Up the ante and have winners from each game compete against one another in a game of a different type.

5. Head to the theater. Catch that summer action flick or curl up next to a sweetheart and watch the latest romantic comedy. Some movie theaters even offer discount tickets at certain times during the summer.

6. Don’t be afraid of the rain. Unless you’re a certain witch with a wicked streak, chances are you will not melt in the rain. Summer rain actually can be refreshing, so put on your rain jacket and enjoy a stroll or even find a way to have fun in the rain. It’s alright to get messy during a rainy day volleyball or football game. Just be sure to run inside the moment you see any lightning.

Prairie Township Summer Day Camp School’s out! Now what?

You provide the kids and we provide the what.

The solution is Prairie Township Summer Day Camp.

Camp runs: Monday through Friday June 13–August 5, 2016 (No Camp on July 1st or 4th) 7:15 AM–5:45 PM Ages: 6 to 12 years old Camp Fees: Resident: Initial 5 Days + $20 Registration Fee = $155 Non-Resident Initial 5 Days + $30 Registration Fee = $165 Additional punch cards may be purchased in 1 day increments for $27 per day

We run. We jump. We swim and play. Day Camp is run out of Darby Woods Elementary School and utilizes school buses for field trips. Children enjoy a mix of large & small group recreation activities, supervised free time, field trips, arts and crafts, games, and swimming at the brand new Prairie Township Community Center indoor pool. Our staff are dedicated to providing a high quality and fun experience for your children. Participants bring a packed lunch daily, water bottle/drink and an afternoon snack. On swim days, participants need a bathing suit and a towel.

The Day Camp program is a “pay as you use” fee structure.

You only pay for the days you send your child to camp, instead of paying for a whole consecutive week. This flexible system is incredibly beneficial to accommodate your busy summer schedule.

There is a registration fee and a mandatory minimum initial purchase of 5 days per child. When you purchase camp days they are added to your card and taken off when you swipe your child into camp. More days can be purchased throughout the summer online or at the Community Center. Field trips require additional fees to be paid on site if you send your child to camp that day.
